So this year I'm gonna try reading instead of doomscrolling before going to bed and since I have a stack of non-fiction books I think I should tackle that.
Fiction is for morning train commutes, harsh realities will be my bedtime stories.
Which one should I start with though?
I currently can't be bothered to look up translations for the German books, so bear with me.
I might just use the results as the order I will tackle these books in but some of them are thicc and will take a while.

The Guardian and the BBC's Eye Investigations on Iran's crack-downs on anti-government protest.
The Guardian's Patrick Wintour writes:
"An Iranian court’s decision to pass the death sentence against Toomaj Salehi, a popular Iranian rapper and regime opponent, has led to international protests and damaged Iran’s fledgling efforts to exploit crackdowns on unrest in US university campuses over Gaza as an abuse of human rights.
...some reformist Iranian newspapers said the regime’s propaganda in the international arena had suffered reputational damage as a result of the surprise decision to issue the death sentence against a singer associated with defiance, but not violence against the regime.
The actor Nazanin Boniadi told a rally at the weekend: 'When he takes to the streets, when he puts pen to paper, when he uses his voice, the regime trembles. Why? Because he speaks for the people. Things that the people do not dare to say, he says.'”

In 2022, during the Woman, Life, Freedom protests, an Iranian teenager, Nika Shakarami, was arrested during one such demonstration, only to be found dead later on a sidestreet. After missing her for 9 days, Shakarami's mother was called to a morgue to identify the girl's body.
Tumblr media
BBC Eye's Bertram Hill, Aida Miller and Michael Simkin, while not "100% certain" that they have authentic documents, proceeded with an investigation using what appear to be genuine governmental reports of the events of Shakarami's death. An Iranian investigation of the arrest points to her being sexually assaulted during transport by a team of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
According to the reports, after an IRGC member groped her, Shakarami struck back--"She kicked at my face, so I had to defend myself"--and three Corps members responded by using a taser on her repeatedly and beating her in the head with their batons. When she was found to have died as a result, her body was dumped so as not to necessitate reporting her death at a detention facility.

[ad_1] A trio of builders are betting on demand for residences in Miami's Overtown neighborhood. Michael Simkins' Lion Growth Group, Property Markets Group and Alex Karakhanian's Miami-based Lndmrk Growth scooped up a 1.5-acre growth website at 105 Northwest Eleventh Terrace, in keeping with the consumers' information launch. They plan a multifamily challenge with market charge and workforce models on the positioning, which is 5 blocks north of the Brightline station. The event companies paid $16.5 million for the property, and scored an $8.3 million mortgage, the discharge says. Metropolis Nationwide Financial institution is the lender. Information present the vendor, RNG Overtown, is led by Mitchell Newman of Morganville, New Jersey. The consumers haven't hammered out challenge specifics such because the unit rely and peak, in keeping with their spokesperson. The deal marks Simkins' continued funding in Overtown, and factors to growth creeping into the traditionally Black neighborhood. In recent times, close by downtown Miami and Park West areas have morphed right into a canyon of high-rises. Simkins began investing in Overtown over a decade in the past with the $3.6 million buy of 10 heaps north of the Brightline station. In 2020, I've paid $5.2 million for 13 heaps close to 226 Northwest tenth Road in Overtown. E11even Companions, led by Simkins, Marc Roberts and Dennis DeGori, and PMG are growing the 449-unit E11even Lodge & Residences Miami at 20 Northeast eleventh Road and the 461-unit E11even Residences Past at 90 Northeast eleventh Road. PMG, with places of work in New York and Miami, is led by Kevin Maloney, Ryan Shear and Dan Kaplan. Others betting on Overtown embody a partnership amongst Swerdlow Group, SJM Companions and Alben Duffie. This summer time, they're anticipated to finish the 578-unit senior residents low-income housing challenge Sawyer's Stroll, which may have 175,000 sq. toes of retail. The event, at 249 Northwest Sixth Road, has 130,000 sq. toes of places of work that had been bought by transport and cruise firm MSC Group for its new headquarters. [ad_2] Supply hyperlink

Ah well. Goodbye (for now at least) to the wonderful Chichester Theatre and The Unfriend. One of the happiest experiences of my professional life - and I’ve had quite a few very happy ones. What a cast, what a team, what a director. And you know what? I think it was a pretty funny show too.

Review: John Gabriel Borkman, Bridge Theatre
Review: John Gabriel Borkman, Bridge Theatre If it weren't for Lia Williams, Clare Higgins and Simon Russell Beale, this would be punishing in the extreme
Lia Williams, Clare Higgins and Simon Russell Beale offer an acting masterclass in the chilly wasteland of Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman at the Bridge Theatre “There are different rules for exceptional people” I wouldn’t normally be rushing to see an Ibsen play in all honesty but the dual drivers of John Gabriel Borkman being one of his plays that I’ve never seen before and Nicholas Hytner’s…
