The Kindred will be released on Steelbook Blu-ray on December 14 for $49.95 via Synapse Films. It includes a slipcover designed by Wes Benscoter (right) and additional Steelbook artwork by Alexandros Pyromallis.

Limited to 3,500, the three-disc set includes the 1987 horror film on Blu-ray and DVD plus a soundtrack CD composed by David Newman (Scooby-Doo, Serenity) and a booklet written by horror journalist Michael Gingold.

Stephen Carpenter & Jeffrey Obrow (The Dorm That Dripped Blood) co-direct from a script they wrote with John Penney (Return of the Living Dead III), Earl Ghaffari, and Joseph Stefano (Psycho). David Allen Brooks, Amanda Pays, Talia Balsam, Kim Hunter, and Rod Steiger star.

The Kindred has been newly restored in its uncut form in 4K with a new 5.1 stereo surround sound remix and the original 2.0 mono theatrical audio mix. Special features are listed below.

Dr. Amanda Hollins (Kim Hunter), a molecular scientist, calls on her son John (David Allen Brooks) to destroy all evidence of her genetic experiments... most specifically her “Anthony Journals.” Dr. Philip Lloyd (Rod Steiger), an acquaintance of Hollins and someone familiar with her experiments, wants to continue her studies no matter the cost! highlights of January

There will be two sections this time: the new films and the re-watched ones as I have seen a lot of films for the second time this month. This actually brought me to choose the theme of this year’s challenge (albeit a bit too late): second chances. Turns out I enjoy most of the films I used to hate. Go figure.

New in 2022

1. Favourite movies: Good News (1947), 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956), Much Ado About Nothing (1993).

2. Decent films I liked / appreciated but not loved: Nightmare Alley (2021), Sitting Pretty (1948)

3. Best scenes: eavesdropping in Sitting Pretty (1948); the cafeteria number and the library flirting / song (Good News, 1947); Benedick vs the chair / the ‘balcony’ confession / the chapel confession (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993).

4. Favourite genres: romance, comedy, noir, musical.

5. Favourite directors: Kenneth Branagh (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993); Guillermo del Toro (Nightmare Alley, 2021); Walter Lang (Sitting Pretty, 1948); Henry Hathaway (23 Paces to Baker Street, 1956); Charles Walters (Good News, 1947).

6. Favourite actors: this is a lot.

7. Least favourite performances: I couldn’t warm up to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in The Music Box (1932) but maybe I just don’t like this kind of humour. But also, Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing (1993). That’s it. I have nothing else to say. What a trainwreck.

8. The most wasted cast: Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan, Charles Coburn (George Washington Slept Here, 1942). I attribute it to slow, practically comatose direction. There were a few moments but overall it was just a drag.

9. The best premise: Sitting Pretty (1948). Lynn Belvedere is my new hero.

9. The best wasted premise: The Woman in Green (1945). Did you have to make it about hypnosis?? Really?

11. Favourite cast: Kate Beckinsale, Imelda Staunton, Jimmy Yuill, Brian Blessed, Phyllida Law, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Kenneth Branagh, Patrick Doyle, Michael Keaton, Ben Elton (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993). I’m excluding Keanu Reeves from the list because that was excruciating. I still like the guy but man was that bad!

Also, just look at Nightmare Alley’s cast! What a powerhouse: Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, David Strathairn, Tim Blake Nelson.

12. Favourite on-screen duos: Kenneth Branagh + Emma Thompson (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993); Maureen O'Hara + Clifton Webb (Sitting Pretty, 1948); Claudette Colbert + Fredric March (Honor Among Lovers, 1931) (I’m choosing to ignore how absolutely disturbing the plot is and just enjoy the rapport between the characters); Esther Williams + Van Johnson (Easy to Love, 1953) (another idiot male but still an enjoyable film); Van Johnson + Vera Miles (23 Paces to Baker Street, 1956); June Allyson + Peter Lawford (Good News, 1947).

13. Favourite on-screen relationships: Connie Lane + Tommy Marlowe (Good News, 1947); Benedick + Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993).

14. Favourite characters: Connie Lane / Tommy Marlowe / Babe Doolittle (Good News, 1947); Benedick / Beatrice / Don Pedro (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993); Phillip Hannon (23 Paces to Baker Street, 1956); Lynn Belvedere (Sitting Pretty, 1948).

15. Favourite quote: If it proves so, then loving goes by haps; some Cupid kills with arrows, some with traps (William Shakespeare curtesy of Much Ado About Nothing, 1993).

16. Favourite fact discovered in 2022: Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson used to be married. I love this fact so much, it gives me so much life! But I hate that he cheated on her with Helena Bonham Carter. That breaks my heart... But at least I understand why their chemistry is so palpable in Much Ado About Nothing (1993).

17. The most overrated film: The Music Box (1932). 8.0 imdb rating is a bit much.

18. The most disappointing film: The Woman in Green (1945) disappointed me because I loved pretty much all the films from Basil’s Sherlock collection up to this point and this one turned out to be really underwhelming. George Washington Slept Here (1942) is another one, but I already mentioned why I dislike this film above. It’s not worth repeating myself.

19. The most overrated / overlooked film: Good News (1947) is too pure for this world!

20. The biggest surprise: Much Ado About Nothing (1993). It’s so stupid and cheesy and hilarious! I adore this film!

As far as the actors go, Van Johnson is a revelation. I’ve liked him before but watching him now is like stepping into a bubble, nothing else matters and it’s just so very comforting.

I was also smitten by Minnie Dupree in The Young in Heart (1938). What a sweet, sweet lady…

21. Best cinematography: Dan Laustsen (Nightmare Alley, 2021). No competition whatsoever.

But also, a guick shoutot to the gloomy, mysterious and attractive 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956) curtesy Milton R. Krasner.

22. Best set design: Nightmare Alley (2021). It’s unsurpassable as far as I’m concerned.

24. Best costume design: I have no idea who to personally credit, so I’ll just credit the film overall: Nightmare Alley (2021).

24. Best music: Good News (1947)

25. Best production choice: casting Clifton Webb in Sitting Pretty (1948).

26. Worst production choice: casting Keanu Reeves (Much Ado About Nothing, 1993); glorifying workplace harassment (Honor Among Lovers, 1931); the hypnosis scenes (The Woman in Green, 1945).

27. The film of the month: overall quality-wise, Good News (1947). Enjoyment-wise, Much Ado About Nothing (1993).

Joshua, Ruiz lose weight ahead December rematch

Anthony Joshua displayed his leaner new physique during a rare appearance this week, in photos obtained exclusively by World Boxing News. Rumors were rife Joshua had been spotted cutting a trimmer figure. This firmly seems to be the case in these latest snaps. The Watford-born boxer has been training at his gym in Sheffield with trainer Rob McCracken ahead of his world heavyweight rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. As WBN revealed last week, new coach Angel Fernandez has also been present to give a new dimension. On top of the pictures, which JD Sports supplied to WBN, some of those who managed to get close to AJ during camp have also confirmed the body alteration. Joshua has much to regain after he was spectacularly beaten in one of the biggest boxing shocks in history. Mexican Andy Ruiz RJ sparked out the Englishman in the seventh round of a cracking match-up last summer in New York Joshua will now take on Ruiz in Diriyah on December 7th. The Brit holds hopes of winning back his four world title belts. Like his forthcoming opponent, Ruiz has similarly shed weight as the weeks fly by to fight night. Original images of Ruiz were thought to be a smokescreen. That was until a sparring session with contender Michael Hunter. ‘The Destroyer’ was in magnificent shape. It proved he’d come a long way from his blubbery appearance at Madison Square Garden. In a follow-up interview, Ruiz would surprisingly reveal he only plans to scale eight pounds lighter. 260 compared to the 268 back in June.

Juni 2019 unterlag er überraschend gegen den Amerikaner mexikanischer Herkunft Andy Ruiz Jr. durch Technischen K.o. in der siebten Runde und verlor dadurch seine Weltmeistertitel. Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, OBE (* 15. Oktober 1989 in Watford, England) ist ein britischer Boxer und ehemaliger Weltmeister im Schwergewicht nach Version der IBF, WBA, WBO und IBO. Er wurde 2011 Amateur-Vizeweltmeister und 2012 Olympiasieger im Superschwergewicht. Joshua wird von Robert McCracken trainiert. Anthony Joshua wurde als Sohn nigerianischer Einwanderer in Watford im Nordwesten von London geboren und wuchs gemeinsam mit zwei Schwestern und einem Bruder in seinem Geburtsort auf. Er verließ die Schule vorzeitig und begann eine Lehre als Maurer. Seine Jugend beschrieb er als „außerordentlich glücklich“, dennoch rutschte er in das kriminelle Milieu ab und war in Schlägereien und Brandstiftungen verwickelt. Chalk up another (yet another) disappointment

So, I finally watched That’s Dancing! (1985), a That’s Entertainment!-style movie about, well, dancing onscreen, put together by Jack Haley, Jr. and David Niven, Jr., and hosted/narrated by Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis, Jr., Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Bolger and Liza Minnelli.  Experience has taught me to go into productions like this with low expectations (although a couple of split-second clips from I Love Melvin gave me hope), but wow.

With roughly 100 minutes to work with, Gene Kelly (of course) starts things off showing performers doing the “new” dance craze, breakdancing, then goes back almost 100 years to the earliest dancing captured on film. From there we move forward to the early days of Hollywood, dance scenes from silent movies, the early “talkie” musicals, Busby Berkeley’s innovations. Attention is paid to Ruby Keeler, one of, if not the first dancing movie star. We see Fred Astaire doing his solo thing in Roberta, Fred Astaire doing his thing with Ginger. Two long clips of Eleanor Powell’s dance numbers. Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Shirley Temple. The Nicholas Brothers. Moira Shearer. Rudolf Nureyev. Tamara Toumanova. Vera Zorina. Fred Astaire with Jane Powell. Fred Astaire with Vera-Ellen. Gene Kelly in Invitation to the Dance, dancing with a cartoon (again). Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow, then in The Harvey Girls. Ray talks about the two greatest dancers onscreen, Fred and Gene, and how their contributions to dancing in films will never be surpassed...what wonderful things Gene did for “everyone’s favorite musical,” Singin’ in the Rain. Example given? One of the best tap numbers ever put on screen, here’s the [insert gushing adjectives] Gene Kelly, *after thought- dancing with Donald O’Connor in this one.* Aaaaaand, that’s the last we see of Donald. More Fred, more Gene (including that awful It’s Always Fair Weather), Shirley MacLaine, for crying out loud, Cyd Charisse, Jimmy Cagney. Jacques D’Amboise got more screen time than Donald. How many people could pick ol’ Jacques out of a crowd? There’s time to cover Saturday Night Fever, Fame, and Flashdance, and Michael Jackson, too, but they didn’t even mention Make ‘Em Laugh, let alone any other Donald movie or number.

Unlike That’s Entertainment!, this one didn’t focus solely on MGM, although we did get a montage of the dancing actors they had during the Golden Age of the 40′s and 50′s. One would think, since they mentioned other studios, that this would be a  better representation of dancing in the movies, instead of yet another slobbering love affair with Fred and Gene. Setting Donald aside for a moment, there was no mention of fantastic movie dancers like Gene Nelson, the Condos Brothers, Peggy Ryan, John Brascia, Mitzi Gaynor, Virginia Gibson, Joan McCracken, The Jivin’ Jacks & Jills, etc., etc., etc. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Fred Astaire, or most of the others featured. But seriously, after two That’s Entertainment! movies at that point, would it have killed them to focus on some of the lesser-recognized talents?

Well, this went on much longer than I anticipated, but, as you know, this kind of thing bothers me. Donald made huge contributions to dance in movies, and so did Vera-Ellen (among tons of others), and to ONLY show them in numbers that are really highlighting Gene and Fred is frustrating, to say the least. It’s no wonder so many of us get blank stares when we talk about Donald. Movies like this could have helped change that long before we had to rely on Tumblr to do it ourselves. For those of you who stuck with me through this long rant, thanks. Now maybe I can sleep :P

Where the Wild Things Are is a fantasy film directed by Spike Jonze. Written by Jonze and Dave Eggers, it is based on Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s book of the same name. It combines live-action, performers in costumes, animatronics, and computer-generated imagery (CGI). The film centers on a lonely boy named Max who sails away to an island inhabited by creatures known as the “Wild Things,” who declare Max their king.

In the early 1980s, Disney considered adapting the film as a blend of traditionally animated characters and computer-generated environments, but development did not go past a test film to see how the animation hybridizing would result. In 2001, Universal Studios acquired rights to the book’s adaptation and initially attempted to develop a computer-animated adaptation with Disney animator Eric Goldberg, but the CGI concept was replaced with a live-action one in 2003, and Goldberg was dropped for Spike Jonze.

8-year-old Max, a lonely boy with an active imagination whose parents are divorced, is wearing a wolf costume and chasing his dog. His older sister, Claire, does nothing when her friends crush Max’s snow fort with him inside during a snowball fight. Out of frustration, Max messes up her bedroom and destroys a frame he made for her. At school, Max’s teacher teaches him and his classmates about the eventual death of the sun. Later his mother, Connie, invites her boyfriend Adrian to dinner. Max becomes upset with his mother for not coming to the fort he made in his room. He wears his wolf costume, acts like an animal, and demands to be fed. When his mother gets upset, he throws a tantrum and bites her on the shoulder. She yells at him and he runs away, scared by what transpired. At the edge of a pond, Max finds a small boat that he boards.

The legendary light-heavyweight Archie Moore described the feeling as “walking the street of dreams”, the moment a boxer is transported to a twilight world of scrambled senses by the force of a single punch.

Anthony Joshua went down that road in New York last June and, not for the first time, the course of heavyweight boxing history was altered in a split second.

At his training base in Sheffield this month, Joshua recalled how the left hook landed by Andy Ruiz Jr in the second minute of the third round marked the beginning of the end of his debut at Madison Square Garden. There was more than half the fight remaining – the referee waved it off in the seventh – but in Joshua’s mind it was all over much sooner, along with his reign as world champion.

Earlier in the third round, Ruiz had been floored by a right-uppercut, left-hook combination and Joshua went looking to land the same two shots twice in the following 20 seconds. On the second occasion, as Joshua swivelled into his left hook, Ruiz got there first with an almost identical punch. Joshua wobbled away and seconds later fell to the canvas.

There would be three more knockdowns suffered by Joshua but he is adamant that the critical damage was inflicted on that first visit to the canvas. “I never recovered,” he told me during a reflective interview at the English Institute of Sport.

‘It has cost more money but I’m fine-tuned for Ruiz’

Split seconds and fractions of inches separate success and failure across world-class sport, but in few arenas is the capacity for turnarounds as dramatic as in the ring, especially at heavyweight. Ruiz was two rounds and a knockdown behind before connecting with the punch which ultimately built a new house for his mother.

And the right hand again was the clincher for Rocky Marciano when he wrested the world title from Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round in Philadelphia in 1952. Like Wilder, Foreman and Marciano were adrift on the scorecards.

Joshua’s downfall was all the more surprising given the recovery mission he had mounted after being knocked down heavily by Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium more than two years ago. Back then, Joshua was composed enough to tell his trainer Robert McCracken that he had “taken a round off” in the eighth in order to regroup.

Against Ruiz, Joshua was entitled to attempt to capitalise on his success in inflicting the first knockdown Ruiz had ever suffered. But in engaging in a firefight, Joshua introduced an element of Russian roulette into the equation. He has often mentioned his admiration for the five-round war between Foreman and Ron Lyle in 1976 and suddenly found himself in a modern-day interpretation, if not quite as high octane. Instinct and emotion, so controlled against Klitschko, seemed to cloud Joshua’s judgement against Ruiz in relation to the most important distinction a fighter makes in mid-storm: when to take aim and when to take cover.

Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns once said: “For a long time, my pride was too high. But I learned. When you get in trouble, grab hold. Ride it out. Any man can get hurt. And when he does, he must learn how to survive. Or else.”

Against that background, with such tiny margins of error, it is remarkable that the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Joe Calzaghe got it right every time: the split seconds and fractions almost always in their favour. Yes, they were in lighter weight divisions and the power ratio might be lower but the punch output in terms of numbers is much greater. And Mayweather suffered just the one (highly questionable) knockdown during a career in which more than half his 50 fights were world title contests.

In training, Mayweather and Calzaghe placed heavy emphasis on boxing skills and drills: bags, pads and sparring being every bit as important as strength and conditioning. In our recent interview in Sheffield, Joshua said his focus for this fight had changed. “More boxing,” was the instant response when I asked him what modifications had been made in the gym.

Over the past two and a half years, Joshua has played his part in a heady era. As for the future and the scope for more of the same, it could be argued that Fury, Joshua, Ruiz and Wilder are all still improving.

Ruiz’ only defeat in 34 fights was a debatable points loss against Joseph Parker in New Zealand three years ago. Parker enjoyed enough success at long range to eke out a split decision but Ruiz won virtually every exchange at close quarters. His fast hands tilt the odds his way when standing toe to toe and Joshua’s strategy in this department could be crucial to the outcome of the rematch.

Elijah Jones peered over the edge of a model train layout, reaching toward the foam mountain where a locomotive had just disappeared into a tunnel. The three-dimensional layout detailed to look like a desert landscape - complete with cattle, cacti, a western town and two trains traveling in opposite directions - captivated the 3-year-old Springfield resident at the annual railroad swap meet held Sunday at the Sangamon County Fairgrounds in New Berlin. More than 100 tables, selling everything near and dear to the train collector's heart, were featured at the five-and-a-half-hour event. And many of those model railroad enthusiasts who brought collectibles to buy and sell say their love for the hobby began when they were about Elijah's age. "I've had trains since I was five years old," said Frank Herman, 79, of Springfield. "You can have it as toy-like or realistic as you want it. I don't know what it is that makes it fascinating." Herman's booth featured two five-piece model train sets dating to the 1930s and selling for approximately $275 each. "I probably got them at one of these swap meets," he said. "Sometimes in magazines you'll see an ad, something that interests you." Others, like Joe Maggio , a member of the Sangamon County Central Railroad Club, said it's a chance for an older generation to share its love of model trains with younger children. "I think it's something you never grow out of," he said. "It's just a fascination that we all have with trains. We have to get the younger kids involved, or this hobby will die out when we start dying off." An official attendance count was not available Sunday, but Maggio said there was a mailing list of more than 600 people. Although most vendors were from the Springfield area, the swap meet drew model-train enthusiasts from as far as Missouri, Iowa and Indiana. And most vendors also are operators, meaning they have functioning model railroads on personalized three-dimensional layouts, he said. Often the swap meets provide the model train collectors a chance to sell their duplicates. Trains and accessories available were categorized by scale, from larger, G-scale trains to smaller trains that are O, S, HO and N scale. One attendee, Art Wiseman, 74, of Athens said it can take months to put the working displays together, but in the end, it's worth it. "It helps the kids realize trains are interesting," he said.

Although it's common practice for fans to feast on brats and barbecue in stadium parking lots before pro and college football games, tailgating hasn't been a part of game day at most high school competitions. But that's changing. At Springfield's Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, parents and supporters of the state-ranked Cyclones plan their pre-game galas - down to each menu item for home and road games - before the season ever begins. "It started out as a way to make money for the football team," said Gary Nevins, who heads the Tailgaters Association, a group of SHG gridiron regulars who arrive about an hour before each game to share a meal and chat with friends. "Now it seems to be getting bigger every season." The Tailgaters Association, an informal group not officially affiliated with the Catholic school, was started four years ago by Rob Miller when his son Justin played for the Cyclones. "There were eight or nine couples who we were close to, and we talked about getting together before the games. I bought a tent and assigned people to do the cooking. Then we put out a coffee can for donations and other people started pitching in," said Miller, a sales manager for phone book publisher DonTech. "Every week, more and more people started coming and soon we raised enough money for the tunnel," he said, referring to the 20-foot portable black entrance tunnel through which the Cyclones take the field when playing home games at Memorial Stadium. Corporate sponsors helped raise the $3,700 price of the tunnel. "We didn't start the group to make money, but if we do, we put it back into the team," said Miller. Donations are used to rent a storage shed for the tunnel, purchase paper goods and extra food for the meals and feed the cheerleaders and pom squad before the games. It's believed that American tailgating began in the 19th century, when fans who traveled long distances to football games took to cooking near their carriages out of necessity. Its popularity took a leap in the late 1970s when college alumni hosted parking-lot parties as a way to socialize with old friends. National Football League fans embraced the concept, as did major companies like Coca-Cola, Masterfoods USA (M&M's, Snickers), Sara Lee and Jack Daniels, which reach millions of Americans with tailgating-themed advertising and promotions. At last weekend's game against the Lanphier Lions, about 250 SHG tailgaters dined on a menu of mostaccioli, sloppy joes, sausage and sauerkraut, meatball sandwiches, chili, baked beans, potato chips, cookies, cupcakes and soft drinks. On other days, entrees have included fried chicken, red beans and rice, shredded pork, barbecued beef, ham and beans, jambalaya, deep-fried turkeys and linguine with clams. "Each entree feeds 40 to 50 people," said Nevins, a manager at parking lot management company System Parking Inc. "People often bring food that we didn't anticipate. We don't refuse anything." Prior to the start of the football season, the tailgaters meet to plan their activities. A sign-up sheet is posted; volunteers fill in game dates with the foods they plan to provide. "Some people bring food; some throw a few coins in the can," said Nevins. "Everyone is welcome to come and pick up a plate. There is no real membership and no dues." Most of the tailgaters prepare the food at home, but some fire up in the parking lot. Joe Maggio and Henry Manci are among a group of alumni who occasionally haul a Weber grill and roasters to the stadium to cook up some on-site Italian sausage. "Not just any sausage will do," said Maggio, who buys it at a meat shop in the Chicago area. "It's the best there is. I took vacation time to go up there and get it." The buddies arrive about four hours before the game to cook the sausage with green peppers, onions and red sauce. High school tailgating is becoming more popular, said P.J. O'Neil, vice president of sales and marketing for Chicago-based American Tailgater Co. (www.americantailgater.com), a firm that sells tailgating supplies and equipment. "Usually you see it in areas where teams travel hundreds of miles for Friday-night games, places like Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma." He added that tailgating has branched out beyond football. Some baseball stadiums - including U.S. Cellular Field, home of the White Sox - allow it, as do facilities that host events such as NASCAR races and figure skating and Little League finals. O'Neil estimates that more than 20 million Americans tailgate at least once a year. A survey sponsored by Ragu found that more than half prefer the party to the actual game. "It's getting a little more notoriety because a lot of companies are beginning to recognize tailgating as a marketing tool. Companies want products associated with an activity that is fun. You never hear about people going to a bad tailgating party," said O'Neil about the increasing number of businesses that sponsor pre-game bashes. His company sells football-shaped grills, one-minute beverage coolers, beer-can chicken racks, Buffalo wing pots, team-logo steak branding irons, turkey fryers, college team flags, portable toilets, two-way radios, pickup truck dog ramps, NFL logo flasks and helmet-shaped snack bowls. The $6,000 "ultimate tailgating system" includes a 50,000 BTU Ducane gas grill, refrigerator, freezer, stainless steel sink, city hose connection and hand pump, locking drawers, food prep area, patio umbrella, electric lift system and power inverter to accommodate a slow cooker, blender and TV. You can save $200 if you choose the model with only one, instead of two, beer taps. "There's a very large competition between tailgaters," said O'Neil. "We see people who have been tailgating next to each other for 20 years and everyone wants to one-up each other. If one guy has a blender, the next guy has a gas-powered blender." The Sacred Heart-Griffin tailgate parties are more about connecting with friends and alumni. "There's something about SHG football that brings people together. It's a long tradition," said Michele Nevins, who helps her husband, Gary, with the Tailgaters Association. The couple's son A.J., now at Lincoln Land Community College, played for the Cyclones; their son, Tony, is on the roster now. Daughter Cristina, an eighth-grader at Little Flower School who will be an SHG freshman next year, helps her parents set up the tables, tent and school flag before each game. After the meal, she hauls the black-and-gold flag into the stadium so the team can carry it onto the field. Michele Nevins, a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy with brothers who played football for Griffin High School, didn't attend her alma mater's games after graduation until 1995. "It was like old home week. It was so much fun seeing everyone again." She couldn't get her husband, a graduate of Springfield High School, to attend the games until A.J. started playing. "He didn't convert till the last possible moment," said Michele, who works for the Illinois Department of Public Aid. Tailgating regulars include parents of students and graduates, alumni and people who simply enjoy SHG football. "Everyone likes a winner, and at Sacred Heart-Griffin, they expect to win," said tailgater Terry Montalbano, a Southeast grad whose daughter went to SHG. "Most games we go to on the road, we have a bigger crowd than the home team." Said Manci: "When we went to school at Griffin, it was all guys and we've kept up those friendships for 30 and 40 years. Tailgating has given me a chance to meet people who were there before me and after me." Karen Sronce is new to SHG tailgating. Her son John, a Cyclones player, transferred to the school this year from Springfield High. "There was a dinner for varsity moms and there was a (tailgate party) sign-up sheet. I'm sitting there in total awe by the number of mothers there. The amount of parental involvement at this school is amazing. I was an outsider, but they were so welcoming." Like other parents of players, she wears a big button with a color photo of her son in uniform to the tailgating party and game. "About 10 percent of the SHG people who go to the games are in the parking lot with us," said Gary Nevins. "It's turned into quite an extravaganza."

Some former state workers may be sitting on a nest egg -- and not even know it. The State Employees Retirement System of Illinois wants thousands of ex-state workers to know they have mini-jackpots just waiting to be claimed. About 5,000 former state employees are entitled to between $5 and thousands of dollars that now is sitting unclaimed in the 50-year-old state pension fund,

said Joe Maggio ,

manager of the services and refunds division of the state employee retirement system. "These are people who have moved over the years and haven't told us their change of address," Maggio said. "(Other) people didn't realize the money was coming out of their paychecks, I guess." So now the state is trying hard to locate such people and hand out the cash, according to Maggio, who first hatched the idea to track down people two or three years ago. After looking at similar programs in Alaska and Indiana, he decided to recommend introducing a similar plan in Illinois this year. Co-workers, friends and relatives are being urged to contact the retirement system if they know the whereabouts of the 880 people who are owed more than $100 each. Their names have been published in two agency newsletters. A January newsletter for retired employees and an April newsletter for active employees both contained pages titled "Do you know where they are?" Any state worker who is over the age of 60 and served the state for at least eight years is eligible for a pension, Maggio said. At present, Illinois has nearly 80,000 state workers. They tend to be more aware and informed about benefits than some of their predecessors, he said. So far, the agency has received 60 responses to names on the lists, and some people have already been sent their money, according to Maggio. The agency hasn't received many hoax callers, although a few people with common names, "like John Smith," have made bogus inquiries. "We're careful to make sure the real people get the money," Maggio said. "Anything we find is gravy. We're not spending a lot of money (to trace ex-workers), but we're still finding people." Locating people after making arduous checks with credit bureaus, the secretary of state's office, the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration can be hard work, but it's good when it pays off, he added. "I ran down one guy who is a priest and he was in a monastery somewhere," said Maggio, who's been with the retirement system since 1977. Although the majority of missing recipients still live in Illinois, some on the list have ended up a long way from the Prairie State. "One woman is now living in Australia," Maggio said. Others have been tracked down in Alaska, California, Florida, Texas, Arizona and North Carolina. There's even one ex-state worker living in the nation's gambling mecca, Las Vegas. "He could probably use the (money)," Maggio said with a chuckle. How do people react when told they've got unexpected money coming to them? "Some people are really happy, and they think they're going to win thousands of dollars," Maggio said. "But it's usually smaller amounts. Sometimes they say `I don't want (the money), it's not worth it.' But most are genuinely appreciative." Any eligible recipients should get in touch quickly, Maggio warned, because future federal regulations may require former state workers who are now over the age of 70 to pay half their unclaimed pension money to Uncle Sam. And that's never good news.

En route to the Class AA state baseball championship last year, Griffin High School relied on the one-two pitching punch of seniors Jeff Borski and Tim Hull. As they prepare for a repeat appearance at Lanphier Park, the Cyclones don't have such a Big Two, but Coach Ron Wojcicki isn't fretting. "Last year, it was pretty much a case of us going as far as Jeff and Timmy could take us," said Wojcicki. "We don't have anybody of their caliber this year, but I think we have more people who can throw. We've been going with whoever's hot." Griffin certainly has gotten hot at the right time. The Cyclones entered last year's tourney at 33-4. Today, they'll take a 20-19 mark into an 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal against Chicago Marist (31-8). Griffin ended its regular season with six straight losses -- four coming to Joliet Catholic. In fact, Griffin enters with the second-most losses by a quarterfinalist. In 1982, Edwardsville finished 23-24. In 1981, Chicago Brother Rice was 32-17 in finishing second. But the Cyclones have allowed just 10 runs in their five post-season games. That's Wojcicki's main reason for optimism. "Our pitching has been outstanding," said Wojcicki, in his third year as head coach. "If you can hold your opponent to two runs, you know you're going to be in the game. That's all we look for." Wojcicki will look for more of the same today from junior right-hander Chris Stapleton (2-5). Marist Coach Don Kuehner said his likely starter will be senior left-hander Frank Vlk (9-2). Vlk is one of three lefties in Marist's rotation. Stapleton, a hard thrower, was winless in the regular season with a couple of tough-luck losses along the way. But he has won two tournament contests and has a 3.72 earned-run average over 53 innings, with 73 strikeouts 48 walks. If Stapleton would falter, it would be sophomore J.J. Borski out of the bullpen. In the Cyclones' five tourney games, Borski has saved three and won one. For the year, he carries a 1.81 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks in 39 innings. Senior right-hander Dave Saladino (5-4) got the complete-game victory Monday against Lincoln in the Springfield Sectional. "You knew whoever threw Monday wouldn't throw Thursday," Wojcicki said. "Saladino gave us a big lift Monday, and I think it helped his confidence." While Stapleton, Saladino and Borski have formed Griffin's post-season staff, Wojcicki sees several others with a chance for tournament work. Among them is junior right-hander Craig Jones, who worked three innings of relief in last year's quarterfinal win over Chicago Vocational. "We haven't used Jones in post-season, but we're confident enough in him from last year," Wojcicki said. "We'd have no problem pitching him. We haven't thrown (senior right-hander) Dan Patterson in a while, or (senior left-hander) Jeff Sauer ." Offensively, Griffin has had various post-season heroes. Leadoff man Terry Williams drove in the game winner in the regional opener against Chatham Glenwood and belted a two-run homer in the sectional win over Normal. And against Lincoln, No. 6 man Brad Rotherham went 3-for-3 while No. 7 man Greg Bernet delivered a key bases-loaded triple. In defeating the Railers, the Cyclones' top three batters went hitless. The bottom six combined for nine hits. "If you'd told me that was going to happen, I would've said our chances would've been pretty slim," Wojcicki said. "But the bottom of our lineup came through. We don't rely on that one person." Only a few Cyclones saw substantial action on last year's state championship team: Williams, second baseman Dennis Kracik and catcher Jeff Swaney. That, combined with an up-and-down regular season, casts the Cylcones as a heavy underdogs -- just as theywere in the regional and sectional. "Oh, sure, we're the underdog," Wojcicki said. "You look at our record and everything else. But we don't feel any pressure at all. You hear people say, `It's great just to be here,' and it is great. But we're playing our best ball now. "Our record reflects we didn't always play our best. But the kids are confident now."
