sheesh, it’s been a while. sorry about that guys!
I’ve been Overwhelmed pretty much… for the last few weeks 🥲 i had a breakthrough the night before last prior to the all-nighter i was *planning* to pull (i did not end up doing so) that at this point in my undergraduate career, i qualify for reduced tuition, so i actually don’t need to be making myself miserable over my GPA for scholarships. which is FABULOUS because i have been incredibly overwhelmed over that for over two years, but now dobby is a free elf! i had an exam this morning and another one tomorrow morning but after my epiphany last night, i’ve spent the day in the same sort of numb state that i was in at the end of this past spring when i was first assured that i would be diagnosed—as in, incredibly relieved and too burnt out/overwhelmed to do much of anything except for feel my relief. praise the Lord! He is so so good in every moment.
i made the really hard decision to drop choir after our mid-semester concert this weekend. singing at my last concert with this group made my emotions run high all weekend, and i will miss rehearsing and performing, but it made my schedule exponentially more complicated logistically; on top of that, i wasn’t able to attend often enough to even know what was going on, so it was a huge mental load to set aside that time every week just for me to make practically zero contribution to the group and not really be getting the choir experience. it just didn’t make sense for me anymore.
for my remaining three semesters i will only be enrolled part time and won’t be in choir, so things are looking a lot more manageable starting in january. until then, here is my plan:
🧬 repeatedly immerse myself in the video lectures my biochem prof provides starting as soon as possible to compensate for my incredibly slow processing speed
🧬 attend all review sessions for micro
🧬 attend virtual help sessions for genetics lab reports so i’m not up until 2 am wednesday nights trying to get through those with my lab partner
🧬 attend genetics (lecture) office hours for help on all the homework so i don’t lose points
🧬 get together with micro lab group to study
🧬 do three (3) academic tasks per day (ideally)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. little guy on campus!
2. genetics was cancelled yesterday so i had a chill morning
3. on monday night after friend group Bible study one of the guys whose house we meet at offered me orange juice and crackers and then did this 😊 i’m a little (read: a lot) 🥰🥰🥰 for him but it’s okay
4. ice cream with two of my choir friends and my cousin after the concert this weekend!!
🎶 song on loop: this weekend it was "the view between villages" - noah kahan and now it's "orange juice" - noah kahan
📖 current book: i finaaaallllllyyyyyyy finished i have some questions for you by rebecca makkai. the ending wasn't as unsatisfying as i was expecting it to be, but still i didn't really appreciate it. the problem child by michael buckley and peter ferguson (the sisters grimm, #3) is my current comfort book on my phone.
🕰️ time focused: hahahahahah really funny joke
hopefully i will be making another post later tonight with my three (3) academic tasks i’ve accomplished.

I totally get if you dont wanna reveal the answers but im also SO curious abt the answers to your Disney trivia (esp the 101 dalmatians book one!!!)
I thought I checked a box that said they would tell u the answers if u got it wrong but apparently that's not working so absolutely.
Quiz is HERE is you guys wanna take it before reading this! I worked very hard on it <3
Anyway, infodump time
How Many Banks Children were in the first Mary Poppins book?
A: Four. While Jane and Michael were the main characters of the book, they also had infant twin siblings. I had to edit this question to include “first book” after finding out that they get another sibling in later books; so the first book has four, and later books have five.
2. T/F: In 101 Dalmatians, Pongo's mate is named Perdita after she is found alone on the street.
A: False. Perdita is not Pongo's wife or the puppies' mother, but a nurse for some of the pups. She was indeed named Perdita (meaning "lost") after being found on the street, and was a liver-spotted dog looking for her own lost puppies. Pongo's wife is named Missis and she's a bimbo and i love her
3. Disney added multiple characters to Bambi. Who of the following was actually in the book?
A: Faline. Thumper and Flower were added to the Disney film and did not appear in the original book.
4. T/F: In the original Pinocchio book, the character who would become Stromboli was actually more sympathetic than Disney portrayed him as.
A: True. Stromboli's character, Mangiafuoco, is at first annoyed at Pinocchio for ruining his performance and threatens to burn him. However, he takes pity on the boy and later lets him go, giving him some gold coins for his journey.
5. Which of the following is NOT something that happens in the original Peter Pan that Disney cut from the ending?
A: the answer I made up is the one of Nana going to Neverland. In the original book, at the end, Captain Hook is eaten by the crocodile, the Darling children return to find that they had been reported missing for several months and their parents were frantic, the Lost Boys move in with the Darlings, them and John and Michael forget about Neverland, and Tinker Bell dies offscreen. Peter forgets about her cause his memory is shit.
Other Peter Pan fun fact: There are actual canon nonbinary fairies in this 1911 book! Wendy talks about the fairies, and says, “The mauve ones are boys and the white ones are girls, and the blue ones are just little sillies who are not sure what they are.”
6. T/F: Tarzan’s foster mother, Kala, dies in the book.
A: True. She’s unfortunately killed by some tribal African stereotypes which. oof.
7. What role did Ariel's sisters play in the original Little Mermaid?
A: They sold their hair for a way for the Little Mermaid to return home. The sisters gave the Sea Witch their hair in exchange for a dagger for Ariel to use to stab the prince; if she did so, she would revert to a mermaid. Ariel considered it, as the prince had fallen in love with someone else and thus she would not be able to marry him by the time limit, but decided against it.
8. T/F: Dumbo's mouse friend was present in the original story.
A: False. Timothy Q Mouse was made as a replacement for a wise robin named Red.
9. What are two of the ways the wicked Queen tries to kill Snow White before using the apple?
A: She tries to suffocate her with a laced bodice, and then brushes her hair with a poisoned comb. These both fail, as the dwarves untie the bodice and remove the comb. Fun fact: the reason the apple failed in the OG story was actually because when the prince moved the coffin, it fell from her mouth!
One of the fake answers is “She gives her slippers that make her dance endlessly,” which is the Queen’s fate in the fairytale. Another fake answer is “She sends crows to peck her eyes out” which happens in the Grimm version of Cinderella to the stepfamily. “She tries to get her to prick her finger on a poisoned thornbush” references both Sleeping Beauty and the beginning of the story where the good Queen wishes for a child as red as blood and white as snow after pricking her finger and seeing blood in the snow.
10. T/F: In the original "The Fox and the Hound" book, the Hound kills the Fox.
A: True. Disney switched the names of Copper and Chief, but the character who would become Copper does chase Tod until he dies of exhaustion. The dog then dies at the end of the book. Cheery! The whole book is full of death and despair I only recommend it if you want to make people uncomfortable at parties.
11. What was Jasmine’s name in the original folk tale?
A: Badroulbadour. As for the other answers: Yasmin is her name in the Arabic dub of the Disney film; Scheherazade is the main protagonist of 1001 Arabian Nights; Dalia is Jasmine’s handmaiden in the live-action reboot; Fatimah is the pestering wife of Maruf the Cobbler in his Arabian Nights story; Morgiana is Ali Baba’s heroic daughter-in-law from Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; Nouronnihar is another princess in The Three Princes and the Princess Nouronnihar, and Zumurrud is one of the protagonists in Ali Shar and Zumurrud.
12. In The Frog Princess, which The Princess and the Frog was VERY loosely inspired by, what is the actual reason that Emma (who would become Tiana) turns into a frog after kissing the prince?
A: She is wearing a curse-reversal bracelet. It was given to her by her adventuring Aunt, and she has to retrieve the bracelet in order to turn into a human and then kiss the prince again.
The fake answer “She is not a real princess” is the reason used in the final film that Tiana transforms.
13. T/F: In 2022, Disney released a sequel film to "Hocus Pocus." However, a book sequel was created in 2018 with a drastically different plot. In this plot, Max and Allison's daughter is canonically gay.
A: True! Her name is Poppy and she summons the Sandersons while trying to impress a cute girl. Queen shit
14. Which of the following is NOT true about the book version of Eilonwy?
A: The false statement was that her bauble was a fairy. The true statements are that her mother was a princess but her father was a commoner, the women of her family were all enchantresses, but she loses a good chunk of her magic by destroying The Book of Llyr.
15. T/F: Disney’s Alice in Wonderland changed the ending to make it all Alice’s dream instead of a real adventure.
A: False! The book did originally end as Alice's dream, as did the sequel. Fun fact, though: The Wizard of Oz was not a dream in the book! As stated before, neither was Peter Pan.
16. What role does Sleeping Beauty's Husband's Mother play in the story?
A: She is an ogre that tries to eat Sleeping Beauty and her children.
17. T/F: While Treasure Planet changed a lot from Treasure Island, Jim's backstory of being abandoned by his father is the same.
A: False. In the book, his father died instead of left.
18. What was the Rescue Aid Society’s name in the book?
A: Prisoners’ Aid Society. The first book actually featured the mice rescuing an adult poet from prison.
19. Esmeralda’s goat sidekick, Djali, was actually in the original book.
A: True.
20. What is the plot to the official book sequel to 101 Dalmatians?
A: The humans all fall into a magical coma and the dogs, now with psychic powers, must save them. Yeah! That’s canon! Written by the original story’s author!! Why did Disney never adapt it!!!
Of the fake answers, “Cruella attempts to kidnap puppies again, only to be thwarted by the original dogs” is a slight ref to 101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure; “A dalmatian without spots saves her family” and “Cruella attempts to reform and becomes a dog lover” are both descriptions of subplots in 102 Dalmatians, and the mention of Cruella’s cat in one of the fake answers does refer to a book character.
21. T/F: The talking snowman was an actual character in The Snow Queen.
A: False.
22. What are the names of Rapunzel’s twin children?
A: The twins are unnamed in the original story. Of the fake answers, “Ruby and Rampion” references a background character in Descendants and the alternate name for the Rapunzel plant; “Dawn and Day” are Sleeping Beauty’s children; “Elba and Saiba” I got from googling fairytales with twins, and the site says it’s an African fairytale? I’ll have to look it up tbh cause I’m not sure; “Zjema and Handa” are from the Albanian folktale The Twins, and “Cassandra and Varian” are two characters from the Tangled TV series.
23. T/F: In the original Tarzan series, Clayton is revealed to be Tarzan’s cousin.
A: True. Tarzan’s birth name is John Clayton II, and Disney’s Clayton is William Cecil Clayton. While this plotline was dropped in the movie, fun fact: Clayton’s VA provided Tarzan’s famous call for the film!
24. What is Ratigan’s first name in the original stories?
A: Padraic. Of the fake names, “James” and “Moriarty” obviously reference the Sherlock character he is based on; “Proudfoot” is a family in the first 1958 Basil story; “Doran” was Ratigan’s lieutenant based on former tumblr blorbo Sebastian Moran; “Vincent” comes from Ratigan’s VA Vincent Price; “Ingham” was the surname of Basil’s VA, Barrie Ingham; and “Leslie” came from one of the inspirations for Basil’s animation, Leslie Howard.
25. T/F: Roger Rabbit dies in the original book.
A: True. I do not know how to convey to you how INSANE the Roger Rabbit book is. It’s so fucking nuts.
26. The Lion King is famously based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. What characters inspired Timon and Pumbaa?
A: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. They ended up serving very different roles in the plot, but originally Timon and Pumbaa’s characters were meant to be Simba’s childhood friends like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were, and they eventually evolved into caretakers when they needed someone for Simba to grow up with.
27. T/F: Maui is a character in Māori and Hawai’ian mythology, but not any other Polynesian cultures.
A: False. Maui appears in Māori, Hawai'ian, Tongan, Tahitian, Samoan and Mangarevan mythology.
28. How Many siblings does Hua Mulan have?
A: Two. She has an older sister and a younger brother. They were combined into Hua Xiu in the reboot, and aluded to in the original movie with Mulan’s dog being named Little Brother. Personally, I like the change of having her being an only child, it puts a lot of implicit pressure on her that she is the ONLY one who can make her family proud and guarantee them a future. However, I also like middle kid rep so lol
29. T/F: Gaston was more sympathetic in the original fairytale.
A: False. Gaston did not exist in the original fairytale. The antagonists were  Belle’s two wicked sisters.
30. Final Question. Which of the following was an actual original story, and NOT based on a pre-existing book, fairytale, myth, etc.?
A: Brother Bear was not based on anything pre-existing, though it did of course draw inspiration from Inuit culture. The other movies listed are Song of the South (based on the Uncle Remus stories), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (based on The Magic Bedknob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons and the following Bedknobs and Broomsticks), Fun and Fancy Free was based on Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk; Frankenweenie is ofc a Frankenstein adaptation but also based on an early Burton short film; and Oliver & Company was based on Oliver Twist.

‘Star Wars,’ 'Superman & Lois,’ ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Buffy’ Guests Among Next Set Of Fan Expo New Orleans Celebrities
Tumblr media
FAN EXPO New Orleans today announced its second set of celebrity commitments, and for fans of some of the most popular entertainment franchises, it’s an absolute bonanza. Among the guests now attending the annual extravaganza, January 10-12, 2025, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, are original Star Wars standout Anthony Daniels, “Superman & Lois” headliners Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch, “Doctor Who” Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star James Marsters among nine newcomers to the lineup.
The sci-fi drama “Resident Alien” (Alice Wetterlund and Sara Tomko) and teen romance “High School Musical” (Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel) are also well-represented in the additions with stars of those programs on board.
Daniels, best known to fans as “C-3PO” across the Star Wars franchise, has more than 100 acting, producing and writing credits. Apart from the dozens of appearances as the beloved droid, the British native portrayed "Tak" in the 2018 film Solo and had a recurring role in the "Ghosts of Albion" series, and UK's “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.” Daniels has written extensively about his experiences, especially in his “New Improved Wonder Column” in the original Star Wars Insider magazine.
Hoechlin stars as “Clark Kent/Superman” in the CW series “Superman & Lois,” now in its fourth season. He also earned attention for his role as "Derek Hale" on the hit MTV series "Teen Wolf” and his breakout performance came at 15, starring alongside Tom Hanks in the critically acclaimed Road to Perdition (2002).
Tulloch was already familiar to genre fans for appearances as “Lois Lane” in DC hits “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Batwoman,” “Supergirl” and others, and for her work in The Artist, Concussion and “Grimm” before vaulting to prominence in the intrepid reporter role alongside Hoechlin in the current series.
Whittaker took her star turn as the Thirteenth Doctor, and first female in the role, on the revived “Doctor Who” series in 2017. Additionally, she played opposite another “Doctor Who” alum, David Tennant, in the British ITV drama series “Broadchurch” and narrates the animated children’s show “Ready Eddie Go!”
Millions of fans worldwide first got to know Marsters as "Spike" in the hits "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." With film roles in Dragon Ball and P.S. German here.
The whole Germany = Bavaria thing is so insanely reductive, it's starting to really get on my nerves that it tends to be the only thing that's ever shown as "German". Germany is huge and varied and the Holy Roman Empire discourse only touches on a small part of that.
All of the stuff mentioned in the post is technically German, but it's just a tiny sliver, and in case of the music and literature, it's all very... high-brow, I suppose? If you asked someone here about what's the most popular and/or intrinsically German type of music, they would mention classic composers maybe at some point, but certainly not first. They'd mention Schlager, or its distant cousin Partyschlager (there is no translated version for this one, use Google translate at your leisure). They might say Neue Deutsche Welle or Punkrock (represented in mainstream by bands like Die Ärtzte or Die Toten Hosen) or Deutschrap. German mainstream music is incredibly Amerinacised these days, but we do still have our own pop music that isn't derived from whatever washes up here from overseas.
For literature, you can pick from a variety of genres. If your guy is into genre literature, they might read Wolfgang Hohlbein, Andreas Eschbach, Frank Schätzing, Markus Heitz, Cornelia Funke, Michael Ende, Walter Moers, Iny Loretz, Mark-Uwe Kling, Charlotte Link...
For classic German literature that isn't just Schiller and Goethe, you could go for Erich Maria Remarque, Max Frisch (who is Swiss but well-known in Germany), Wilhelm Busch, Erich Kästner or the brothers Grimm (those last three if the character wants to read stories to their children), Karl May (obligatory "beware of 19th century racism" warning), or Hermann Hesse.
If the character is more into film and TV, they might have heard about Lindenstraße, Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten, and Tatort (for TV, though Tatort is technically a long-ass series of made-for-TV films), or Der Schuh des Manitu (another "beware of early 2000s racism" thing, but there is context here that relies on knowing Karl May films, which is what Manitu is satirising in the vein of Men in Tights and Blazing Saddles), the Fack ju Göthe series, or Lola rennt (for modern films). There's also more classic films like Das Boot, Schulmädchen-Report (this is erotica, so heads up), Nosferatu, or Metropolis. If the character is queer, they might be really into the works of Rosa von Praunheim.
Food is super varied and more than just Bratwurst and Schnitzel. Comfort food might be a good choice for a character trying to reconnect. There's Currywurst, which is eaten just about everywhere but especially popular in Berlin and the Ruhrgebiet. In the north, you'll find a variety of fish sandwiches. There are potato pancakes with appe sauce or sour cream, and apple pancakes with cinnamon and sugar. If you want to get fancy, you could make a roast with potatoes and gravy, and Kaisergemüse (a veggie mix usually made up of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and sometimes green beans, usually seasoned with salt, pepper, butter and parsley/chives).
The nature is also not just the Alps. Where I live, everything is vineyards. You can't go anywhere without having one within sight of you. Probably also within walking distance, because we love our walks. It's a joke one of my friends makes, when I say I'm going for a walk she'll be like "okay, see you tomorrow". And yes, my walks go through the vineyards.
There's the loops and valleys and gorges of our biggest rivers, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Elbe. All wildly different sights and biomes. We have big, dense forests. The Mecklenburger Seenplatte. The North Sea coast and islands. Saxon Switzerland, which is beautiful and great for hiking, and this famous painting was inspired by it. Hell, we even technically have a desert that's like five square kilometres.
Lastly, Christmas markets are just a general thing. It's not actively religious in nature (it is heavily connected to Christmas as a religious event, but the market itself is far more commercial than spiritual). You go shop for arts and crafts, eat fast food (yes, Bratwurst and potato pancakes are huge here, but so are dishes with fried or sauteed mushrooms as well as things like churros and crêpes), and drink punch or mulled wine. There's also often at least one roundabout, maybe some puppet theatre, too, for the kids. It's a fair with a Christmas paint job more than anything.
Speaking of fairs (so this is the last thing), this is also a really big thing here. Volksfeste are everywhere, big or small or anything in between. You have the really big ones, like the Munich Oktoberfest or the Kreuznacher Jahrmarkt, but also small ones in almost every smaller town (those would be called Kirmes or regionally in the south-west Kerb, usually). They're pretty similar to Christmas markets, but often without the religious aspect (sometimes they do have that because that's what many of them originated from, but for most the religious character was dropped entirely in favour of very worldly carousing). They also have food stalls, fairground games, roundabouts, bumper cars... They're big, open-air parties for all ages, and usually last two to five days over a weekend. This would be something that a character might seek out, combined with specific foods like Bratwurst, to get an impression of what a Volksfest is like.
...man, that got out of hand. Anyway, I hope that helps and expands the picture a little beyond Oktoberfest and Lederhosen^^
Belated edit: I almost forgot! Fasnacht! (Also German article because it's way better, again, use Google translate as necessary.) It originates in Christianity like a lot of traditions, but has shed many of its trappings over the years in favour of partying and political satire. It happens around lent, and usually consists of float parades where candy is thrown into the crowd with abandon (a tasty remnant of the religious origins, last time to stuff your face with sugar before lent), costume parties with music and speeches, and so called "Sitzungen", where you also dress up but don't go all-out, and the programme is usually speeches and skits satirising politics, rather than outright partying. A character might host their own Fasnacht party with costumes and candy for this one. They might play Partyschlager and eat Berliner at this party, as well as throw confetti and paper streamers, because those are everywhere and a pain in the ass to clean, but very fun. If they're more mischievous and don't mind getting into trouble, they might honour the tradition of Weiberfasnacht (women's carnival), which happens on a Thursday and where women go around with scissors cutting men's neck ties. The men usually wear old ties, or ones they bought specifically for this purpose, rather than their usual ones.
Characters reconnecting with their ancestral cultures in an interplanetary setting
@pixiedustandpetrichor asked:
Hi! I am writing a novel with three main female characters in an interplanetary setting. They grow up as orphans in an Irish-coded country and as children are mostly exposed to solely that culture, but they leave after becoming adults. Character A is Tuareg-coded, B Mongolian-coded, and C is Germanic-coded. It isn’t central to the story, but I would like them to get in touch with/learn more about their ancestral cultures, especially in terms of religion. A does this by actually visiting the planet her parents came from, but B and C do not. What can I do to depict their relationships with said cultures and their journey to reconnect with them? Would it be realistic for each of them to have different mixed feelings about participating in these cultures and for them to retain some sense of belonging to the culture they grew up in as well? Thank you for your time.
Hello, asker! WWC doesn’t have Tuareg or Mongol mods at the moment, so we're not able to speak to the specifics of cultural and religious reconnection for these particular groups. Still, I want to take this opportunity to provide some general context and elements to consider when writing Tuareg-coded characters, or other characters from groups that have experienced colonization in the real world. My fellow mods will then share thoughts about cultural reconnection in general and with respect to Germanic heritage in particular.
Drawing inspiration from groups that have experienced colonization
As you’re probably aware, the Tuareg are an ethnic group indigenous to North Africa. As with many indigenous groups, they have experienced colonization multiple times over the course of their history. Colonization often leads to the loss or erasure of certain aspects of culture as the colonized people are pressured to conform to the culture of the dominant group. In many cases, it’s near impossible to say what the ancestral culture of a colonized group was prior to colonization.
When coding a fictional culture based on a group that was colonized in the real world, it's important to ask questions about:
Which aspects of culture you're portraying
Where these aspects come from
Whether you're ready to tackle their implications for the world you're building
It’s not necessarily wrong to use elements of coding that draw from cultural aspects influenced by colonization. As I said, it can be very difficult, even impossible, to portray a “pure” culture as it would have been had colonization not occurred–because we simply can’t know what that alternate history would look like, and because so much has been lost or intentionally suppressed that the gaps in our knowledge are too wide to breach. But it’s important to be aware of where these cultural elements are coming from.
Where is your coding coming from and what are the implications?
For example, while the Tuareg today are majoritarily Muslim, this was not the case prior to the Arab conquest of North Africa. Some elements of Tuareg culture today, such as tea ceremonies, are derived from the influence of Arab and Muslim culture and likely did not exist prior to the 20th century. As you’re developing the culture of the Tuareg-coded group in your fictional setting, you have to decide whether to include these elements. There is no right answer–it will depend on what you’re trying to do and why.
Is your setting in our far future, in which case we can assume your Tuareg-coded group is distantly related to today’s Tuareg?
In that case, they will probably have kept many cultural aspects their ancestors acquired through their interactions with other cultures around them–including cultural groups that colonized them. They may–let’s build hopeful worlds!–have reclaimed aspects of their ancestral culture they’d been forced to abandon due to colonization. They may also have acquired new aspects of culture over time. This can be very fun to explore if you have the time and space to do so.
I would recommend speaking with Tuareg people to get a better grasp of how they see their culture evolving over the next however many centuries or millennia, what they wish to see and what seems realistic to them.
Alternatively, maybe your setting is a secondary world unrelated to ours and you only want to draw inspiration from the real-world Tuareg, not represent them exactly. In that case, you need to decide which period of history you’re drawing from, as Tuareg culture is different today from what it was 50 years ago, and different still from 200 years ago or 1000 years ago. You’ll need to research the historical period you’re choosing in order to figure out what was happening at that time and what the cultural influences were. If it’s pre-colonial, you’ll probably want to avoid including cultural elements influenced by colonization from groups that arrived later on.
Finally, if the time period you’re drawing from is post-colonial:
Are you planning to account for the effects of colonization on Tuareg culture?
Will you have an in-world equivalent for the colonization that occurred in real life?
For example, will the Tuareg-coded characters in your world be from a nomadic culture that was forced to become sedentary over the years and lost much of their traditions due to colonial pressure to conform?
Where did this pressure come from in your world–is it different from what happened in ours? If so, how different? And what are the consequences?
Writing about colonization can be quite the baggage to bring into a fictional setting. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it will certainly require sensitivity and care in portraying it.
In summary: think it through
I’m not saying all this to discourage you, but to point out some of the considerations at play when drawing inspiration from a real-life culture that has experienced colonization. Similar challenges arise for coding based on any other indigenous group in the world.
My advice to you, then, is to first sit down and decide where and when in history your coding is coming from, and what you’re trying to achieve with it. This will help you figure out:
which elements of contemporary Tuareg culture are pertinent to include
How much your coding will be influenced by the Tuareg’s real-life history
To what extent that will inform the rest of the world you’re creating
This, in turn, may help in deciding how to portray your character’s reconnection journey.
Again, I am not Tuareg and this is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list of considerations for writing Tuareg-coded characters, only a few places to start.
If any Tuareg or Amazigh readers would like to chime in with suggestions of their own, please do. As always, please make sure your comments adhere to the WWC code of conduct.

Pulling from diaspora and TRA narratives of cultural reconnection
Marika here: This ask plotline could also pull directly from diaspora and TRA narratives of cultural reconnection. Many diaspora and TRA cultural reconnection stories are, in effect, about navigating the difficult process of resuscitating, or renewing ties to culture using limited resources in environments that often lack necessary cultural infrastructure or scaffolding.
See this question here to the Japanese team for suggestions of how to handle such a storyline in a similar sci-fi setting.

Reconnecting with German heritage
Hi, it’s Shira. I’m not sure whether German-Jewish counts as Germanic for the purposes of your post but since German Jews were more assimilated than other Ashkies, Germanness does feel real and relevant to my life (especially because my father worked there for approximately the last decade of his life.) NOTE: when I see “Germanic” vs German I think of cultures from 1500 years ago, not 100-200 years ago, so I can’t help you there, but I’d be surprised as a reader if a character focused on that for reconnection to the exclusion of the 19th century etc.
People in the United States specifically, reconnecting with German heritage, often lean into Bayerischer/Bavarian kitsch, I’ve noticed. Personally, though, what I find most relevant is:
1. The food (although I’ve come to learn that what I grew up eating was closer to veal/chicken scallopini than actual schnitzel because it was drenched in lemon, but I do like the other foods like the potato salad and sweet and sour red cabbage etc.) Your character could try making one of these “ancestral” foods as a way to reconnect?
2. The classical music, because I’m a second generation professional musician – if character C plays an instrument, leaning into that might be meaningful (Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann and her husband Robert, etc.)
3. The nature, especially specifics that I enjoyed during my time there – personally, I loved the bright pink flowers all over the chestnut trees, but there are a lot of choices especially because of the Alps. If C is an artist maybe they can sketch something Germany-related from old photographs they found on the Space Internet?
I think it is VERY realistic for the characters to remain connected to the culture in which they were raised, by the way, whether or not they have positive feelings about it. Culture isn’t an inherited trait. Sure, if they want to completely walk away, they can, but I bet there are still ways it will creep back in without them realizing it simply because it’s really hard to have universal knowledge of the origins of all our quirks. Plus, not everyone feels alienated from their raised-culture just because they’re genetically something else.
P.S. There is also Oktoberfest, which I don’t really get into but is a thing, and beer, which is another point of German cultural pride.
German gentiles, weigh in – y’all have your own stuff, I know! OH YEAH so for German Christians, Christmas “markets” are a whole thing. That’s worth looking up.
–S
What do you mean by Germanic?
Hello it’s Sci! I had to study German history for my historical fantasy novel set in the late 18th century Holy Roman Empire. I am not sure what is meant by Germanic as that can encompass a variety of things.
Germanic people: from the Classical Period of Roman Empire and early Middle Ages. Similar to Mod Shira, I unfortunately can’t help very much here.
The Germanosphere: regions that spoke German, which includes modern day Germany, Austria/Hungary, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Belgium, and Luxembourg. I generally define this as the regions captured in the Hapsburg Empire along with Switzerland usually encompassing “Central Europe.”
Modern German national identity (i.e. German): post Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna (> 1815) only including the territory of modern day Germany.*
I ask this because modern German national identity is surprisingly recent since Germany only popped up in 1871 under Otto von Bismarck. Previously, Germany was divided into smaller states and city states as a very decentralized region under the German Confederation and before that, the Holy Roman Empire. Depending on the era, you can see different conflicts and divides. During the early days of the Protestant Reformation started by Martin Luther, the northern and southern German territories generally split along Protestant-Catholic lines. The 18th century saw Austria and Prussia as the foci of global power who warred against each other even though both were part of the Holy Roman Empire.
Other states and city-states like Baden-Wurttemberg or Saxony sometimes had power but it was typically more localized compared to Austria. Post-WW2, you saw the split of Germany into West Germany run under capitalism and East Germany run under communism as a satellite Soviet state leading to more modern cultural divides. Due to heavy decentralization historically, each region had its own character with religious and cultural divides.
Assuming that the Germanic character is not from the classical period or early Middle Ages but not from the 19th century either, you can include your character reconnecting to classical folklore like that of Krampus (if they’re Christian), German literature and music like the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Mozart, or German philosophy like Immanuel Kant.
*A major wrinkle: German royals and nobility married into other states and nations frequently with Britain and Russia being notable examples. In Britain, the House of Hanover took over after the Stuart House died without clear direct heirs. When Queen Victoria married the German prince Albert, they celebrated Christmas with a tree and brought the German tradition of a Christmas tree to Britain and the British Empire. Only during World War I did the royal family’s house of Hanover name change from House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more “English-sounding” Windsor. As a result, the German cultural influence may be even more widespread than we think.
However, without more specific descriptors of what Germanic means in the context of your story, it can be difficult to determine which aspects of German culture your character could reconnect to.

Brothers with Kid!Mammon
Lucifer
He sighs, he expected Mammon to slam the door of his office open, but never expected a child running to hoist himself up on his table.
He blinks in confusion as he found himself staring at a pouting Mammon, who was very young.
"Big bro! Big bro! Are you still busy with work with Michael??" He asks. The eldest frowned at the mention of the name.
But it looks like he only remembers the old times.
"What is it Mammon?" He asked.
Mammon sat down and looked down with an upset expression.
"Ya promised you'd play with me..." he muttered and for some reason, this warmed Lucifer's heart.
He chuckles and pat Mammon's head. "Let me finish this first." He told him, letting the young 2nd-born sit on his lap while he works.
"But it's boringggg..." he whines.
Lucifer sighs and handed him one grimm, "have this first, now behave or I won't play with you."
Mammon immediately shut up and silently played with the grimm Lucifer handed him as he leaned his back on the eldest.
The 1st-born ended up working with a small smile on his face.
Leviathan
Was told to report to Lucifer's office to find the 2nd-born on Lucifer's lap.
"...when did Mammon turn into a kid?" He asks dumbfounded.
The eldest clears his throat and hands Mammon to him. "I'm not sure, I need to drop off these documents at the castle, keep an eye on him for me."
Picking up the documents, the eldest leaves.
Levi was snapped back to reality when he heard sniffles. He looks at Mammon and immediately panics.
"Why are you crying? A-are you hurt anywhere? Or-"
"Where did big bro go? Did he leave?" He asks, wiping at his tears helplessly.
Oh come on, he may give Mammon horrible names, but seeing his brother like this...
"He'll come back- here! Let's go to my room and watch anime together!" He tries to assure.
The 2nd-born looked at him confused with tears in his eyes.
He sighs and wipes Mammon's tears, "you don't know what that is?"
Mammon shakes his head and Levi frowns. "Normie, a-anyway... to my room!" He attempts to be enthusiastic about this.
Not sure if Mammon is still despicable of sorts, but he needs to make sure he won't touch anything in his room.
Satan
He was about to return a book he borrowed when he walks past Levi's room to hear a child's laughter.
He furrows his eyebrows, knocking on the door.
"Levi? Who's with you?" He asks.
He was met with silence so he announced he's coming in.
The moment he opens the door, he finds Levi and a young Mammon who looked like they were in the middle of a tickle fight.
He blinks multiple times and Mammon looks at him confused. "Who's that?" The 2nd-born asked.
Ah... it looks like Mammon doesn't recognize him. Levi told him the situation and smiles sheepishly.
"Right, Satan, can you take over? I need to recharge my energy..." he said, handing Mammon over, closing his door immediately before the 4th-born could say no.
He sighs in defeat before looking at the confused 2nd-born.
He turns to Mammon and smiles. "Care to join me on a trip to the library?" He offered.
The 2nd-born's eyes sparkled slightly in excitement. "Is big bro there?" He asks.
He raises an eyebrow, 'big bro?'
He chuckles and shake his head, making his way out of HOL with Mammon in his arms.
"Not likely. Ah, we'll go anywhere you want to go after we drop by the library, alright?"
"Ok!"
Asmodeus
Waiting for Satan to complain about that one employee at Majolish.
But he didn't expect to bring home a child with him.
"Satan... did yo-"
"No, Asmo. It's Mammon." He cleared, the 2nd-born peaked to look at the 5th-born and blinked.
Asmo stares at him before turning back to Satan. "He doesn't look like he recognizes us..."
"I assume he only recognized Lucifer and Levi." The 4th-born answered.
Asmo smiles and introduces himself to Mammon and the 2nd-born just watches him cautiously.
He giggles, "what's wrong? Am I breathtaking?"
"No, you look too fake with that makeup thingy." Mammon answered and the 5th-born stared at him offended while Satan laughs.
"It's not funny Satan! I just got Insulted!" Asmo huffed and the 4th-born just smiled at him in amusement.
Handing Mammon to Asmo, he told him he has to finish the remaining homework from RAD.
Asmo pouted and told him as he leaves, "you owe me!"
He yelps when he felt a tug on his hair and looks at the 2nd-born with a frown. "Stop that."
Mammon giggled and shook his head. Asmo sighs and gave up, he would've preferred if Mammon turned into a Baby like Lucifer and Belphie did, rather than a literal kid who can walk and talk now.
Beelzebub
He was heading to the kitchen until Asmo caught his eye.
"Beel? There you are! Could you watch over Mammon for awhile? I need to pick up my order!" Asmo said, handing Mammon to Beel who was confused.
The 5th-born bolted off and he was left in a staring contest with the 2nd-born.
"...Mammon?" He calls out.
"Ya know me?" The avatar of greed asked, tilting his head slightly.
Beel realized what was happening and smiles slightly before introducing himself.
"Are you hungry?" He asked, the 2nd-born nodded.
He went to the kitchen with Mammon in his arms, placing the 2nd-born on the kitchen counter, he tells him to stay put.
From what he remembered, Lucifer used to cut up fresh fruits for the 2nd-born.
And he did just that.
Handing Mammon a bowl of cut up fruits, sneaking a slice or two for himself, of course.
Mammon stared at the bowl before looking back up at Beel.
"Did big bro tell you about this?"
The 6th-born smiled and nodded. Let's go with that reason.
He handed Beel a slice while the 2nd-born nibbled on a slice of his own.
Beel ate the piece Mammon gave him and saw that the 2nd-born used to be like this when they were still angels.
Mammon still cares for his brothers, even after the fall...
So having to take care of him like this isn't that bad.
He shakes his head, dismissing the thought.
Belphegor
He just woke up from a nap and went to look for Beel.
The first place he went to was the kitchen, and he found him... along with a child?
"Beel? Who's that?" He asked, not sure if he was dreaming or not.
Both Beel and Mammon turned to him and Belphie blinked dumbfounded.
"Is that Mammon?" He asked another question, looking at Beel.
The 6th-born nodded. "I have to head to the gym in a few minutes, could you take over?"
Belphie frowned. "You made me look for you all over, walk all the way here and you're just going to leave me with him the moment I find you?" By him, he meant the 2nd-born.
Beel smiled apologetically. "We can go to the headless café later once I'm done." He proposed and Belphie sighs.
"Fin-"
"Bee? Who's that?" The 2nd-born tugged on Beel's sleeve, asking a question as he pointed at the 7th-born.
"That's Belphie, my twin."
Belphie approaches the two and picks Mammon up. "Get going Beel, I can handle this." The youngest said.
The 6th-born thanked him and left.
Mammon then asked where Beel was going. "He's out to buy you something." Belphie excused.
But knowing Beel, he'll try to not eat the food he'll bring home.
He examines the 2nd-born before smiling slightly.
"When you were older, you used to take care of me." He said, heading out the kitchen, making his way to the planetarium.
"I did?"
The youngest merely nodded, not bothering to continue more of that story.
The moment they arrived at the planetarium, he meant to bring the 2nd-born to stargazing with him.
The youngest glanced at Mammon to find him staring in amazement.
He sighs in content before staring up at the stars too.
He thought that his brother wasn't affected by his sin when he turned to a kid.
He looks and acts like a completely harmless child.
Well, that means less work for him at least.

Chapter 1 | Captain's Log
This chapter's log has been written by Emily from the perspective of her character, Meredith Elise Mitchell. Due to her thorough notetaking throughout the game, the entries are taken directly from her in-game journal.
The planet we are currently stationed at is Nauliac, a planet entirely filled with water. People live on large ships. We are on a ship called Tsavaye.
Tsavaye has gravitational pull that prevents us from swimming away from the area. Like the moon?
Culture is similar to Earth pirates. (note to self: ask somebody more knowledgeable about what Earth pirates were actually like. I do not believe my romance novels were an accurate reference.)
Currently ruled by a monarchy. There is a civil war going on between revolutionaries and monarchists, causing a strain on resources. The locals are too focused on the war to assist us with our broken communications system or the situation we find ourselves in.
When going out onto Tsavaye, remember to wear: 1) Helmet, to provide oxygen. 2) The outfit of neutrality provided by the local leader. Should hopefully (?) keep you out of conflict.
Tumblr media
Mr. Sameda is now allowing us to buy 'gacha' at the shop. These seem to be items that he has taken from our personal luggage. I will keep track of all the items I obtain.

A… killing game participation ribbon?
Envelope of grocery money.
An empty capsule.
An audio recording of bullying.
A diary entry from Mallory.
A book about serial killers.
[At this point, Meredith has almost run out of space on the page. There is just just enough room for her to write 'CONT LATER.]
Tumblr media
Mr. Yang received a romance novel from the gacha, and was kind enough to lend it to me on the condition that I provide a summary for him.
The Clown I Loved
FMC Lillian Finebaum, MMC Michael Rook. Childhood friends, Lillian's uncle was partners at a law firm with Michael's father.
Five years ago, Lillian accidentally caused the death of Michael's father. Michael tried to prosecute her in court for this, but she was acquitted. They have not spoken since.
Lillian moved away to become a clown.
""secondary MMC"" is a man named Elliott, who is also a clown, but he is never presented as a valid love option. He is in love with her, she does not love him back. He is an inventor who has his patent ideas stolen and is now broke.
Lilian's uncle died, now she and her cousin Barry have ownership of the law firm. Michael comes to town to get her to sell, she would like to sell so she could help Elliott, but Barry is holding out.
Family drama ensues, and Lilian and Michael start to fall in love.
She returns home with him, and goes to fancy dinner parties. She does a clowning performance at one of them, despite Michael's disapproval, and entertains the crowd.
They break up due to more drama - Lilian believes that Michael will never "forgive her" for accidentally killing his father.
But they make back up again, and they live HEA.
discussion points for Mr. Yang:
childhood love interests in books: why do they disappoint? show vs tell, being informed that they have a deep connection vs getting to see it
the failure of a love triangle. if there is to be one, then both candidates must be viable
lack of utilization of the clown theming. being a clown hardly mattered!
strong internal narration style. very easy to relate to lilian, when you ignore the shortcomings.
don't act ungrateful! even if the book was bad... it was a wonder to read, in a situation like this. remember to be gracious and thankful.
Tumblr media
Ms. Haidar is hosting a formal dinner party tonight.
Find a nice dress that won't take up space, won't make you an inconvenience. Something that looks nice without drawing attention or stealing the spotlight.
Apologize for being unable to help with setting up the party at some point, but don't lead too strongly. Don't try to make things about your own failing.
… try to enjoy seeing people dance, perhaps.
Tumblr media
Don't let yourself get wrapped up in your own delusions of romance and wonder. I feel awful, that I forgot such a basic thing - that wearing formal outfits would cause us to forgo our outfits of neutrality. How foolish can I be? I should have remembered my own advice. I should have kept us all safe. If I had done my job right, Ms. Haidar's dinner party wouldn't have been ruined.
When the royal guard invaded the party to try and arrest us for being dissidents, I allowed myself to be arrested. I thought this would be the best idea, but it clearly was not. Everybody else fought back. Nicat insisted I try and free myself, and that I should not do such a thing again.
In the future, weigh options carefully. Do not give yourself up for arrest immediately, but…
Be sure to thank Ms. Haidar, Nicat, Mr. Koyasu, and Mx. Rios tomorrow morning. They all did a wonderful job organizing the party, even if it did end on a scare. Assure them that you'd love to go to another party.
(thank Nicat for the dance)
Tumblr media
"Motive"
Mr. Sameda has said that, if a murder does not occur in 1 week, he will blow up the Earth's moon. He then blew up an asteroid.
Ask people smarter then yourself for more information. Perhaps you are misunderstanding? Perhaps this wouldn't be so bad after all?
Tumblr media
[Pasted into her journal is a foreign piece of paper, reading:]
August 25th, 1972 Dear Diary,
My first diary entry as a teenager! I don't feel much different yet, but surely I'll start to feel more mature soon.
Today was amazing. I woke up super early - even before Merry - because I was so excited! Mom made chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, just for me.
Then Merry woke up and wished me happy birthday, and I told her "right back at you!", but she insisted that it wasn't actually her birthday yet. Today is kinda weird for us, isn't it? She's 11 and I'm 13, but this is the only day of the year that will be true. Come tomorrow, she'll be 12, and balance will be restored.
She said that because it was my birthday, I could decide whatever we wanted to do today before our party, but… wait, hold on, I just realized something writing this.
Am I being weird, or is that kinda weird? What Merry said? I never thought about it until today, but for some reason her saying that made me realize… she's always letting me pick. Not just today.
Maybe that's the sign of maturity I've been waiting for, realizing that. And it's not like I mind, but… I kinda worry about her, sometimes. I think-
I do not know how Mr. Sameda managed to obtain this. I am selfish. I am happy to see my sisters handwriting, even though it means her privacy has been breached terribly.
I wish I knew what she was going to say. I wish I could ask. I hope she is safe.
I ought to go do something more productive. I am no use like this.
Tumblr media
Mr. Aubeleilles has told me that if I allow people to be rude to me, I am inherently allowing them to be rude to others - showing that such behavior is okay, and encouraging them to do it again. I will need to think about this.
He is also an art thief. He told me that concerningly casually.
Tumblr media
Plan something nice for Nicat. He is already doing far too much for you - think of a way to repay him.
Tumblr media
CONT - There are a worrying about of items in this gacha. Mr. Sameda did not just take these from our luggage - many of these he must have obtained prior. Many people seem to think of the gacha as a game, to get items they can taunt other people with… that is why I must keep buying. So that items can be returned to their rightful owners with dignity. Here is a continued list of items I have obtained:
Parkour book
A Ronald Reagan themed bat
An odd blue doll
Fishnet gloves
A can-opener
A "baptism-to-go" ???
A worried looking fox
An empty soda can
Handwritten coupons for a free haircut from Mr. Yang (he has confirmed their authenticity, and has allowed me to keep them.)
More soy milk.
Tumblr media
ETHICS - Something that is bad because it is illegal. MORALS - Something that is bad because you personally believe it is bad.
EX: On this ship, killing somebody would be "ethical", but it may not be "moral".
All of this is a bit too confusing for me, but Ea was very kind in explaining it. I will try to understand.
Tumblr media
Mr. Koyasu and Mx. Lukashevich are dead.
Explosion heard at 10:40PM. We all rushed to the source - the fighting pit in Tsavaye - but there was a whirlpool. Many of us struggled to make it through.
When it all subsided, the body of Mx. Lukashevich lay there, and Mr. Koyasu was buried beneath the rubble. We could only make out his hand.
Mr. Torres confirmed that both of them were dead.
Mr. Koyasu's hand is scorched.
Mx. Lukashevich has many broken bones. Their helmet is broken. She looks peaceful. (Ask others for their thoughts. Perhaps you are just being foolish?)
Explosive instructions are in the room, as well as a pile of TNT.
There are two sets of footprints leading into the pit.
The library has been searched through. Some of the books are stacked neatly, some are stacked haphazardly.
There is a white button up on Mr. Koyasu's bed, as well as motivational post-it notes.
The handwriting on this does not match Nicats, Mr. Koyasu's, or what I remember Ea's handwriting looking like. Nor does it match any of the other handwritten things I have received from the gacha.
There are parts missing from the submarine's. The workers were too distracted to notice anything.
Please remember this. If you ever feel as though you should take a break. You cannot. If you allow yourself to be remiss in your duties, you could miss something just as important. You must always be alert.
There are three plates of slop at the Deadlights Diner.
There is a book called Psychology of Consciousness next to one of the plates.
Tumblr media
Mr. Koyasu is not dead. Mr. Minami is.
Mr. Minami masterminded this whole idea. He wanted to prevent the explosion of the moon. He enlisted Mx. Lukashevich and Mr. Koyasu for help.
Mr. Koyasu created the plans for the bomb, and Mr. Minami created the actual bomb itself, which killed himself and Mx. Lukashevich.
Before that, though, he and Mr. Koyasu swapped places. Mr. Koyasu wore Mr. Minami's clothing and mask, and Mr. Minami made his hand look as if it were Mr. Koyasu's.
The purpose of this was to test Mr. Sameda, to see if he would be able to figure it out. To see if they could outsmart him. The notes were from Mr. Minami, giving Mr. Koyasu advice on how to act like him.
I was the one who kept pushing those notes. I knew they couldn't be from Mr. Koyasu. I knew it, and so I kept asking everybody for their handwriting, even though I knew it was circumstantial. I was the one who had the sample of Mr. Koyasu's handwriting. When he wrote in my journal, I was the first to realize he had to be Mr. Koyasu and not Mr. Minami. I was the first to recognize that writing.
Is it my fault? Nobody was being evil, after all. Everybody who participated agreed to be involved. They all did this for the greater good. Lives sacrificed for lives saved. Should I have figured it out sooner? Should I have kept their cover?
I don't understand. I don't understand why Mr. Minami and Mr. Koyasu would do this. I don't understand why they'd try to go against Mr. Sameda, when he clearly is willing to harm us.
He did. He did not kill Mr. Koyasu, but it was a near thing. We are now departing Nauliac to try and find better medical care.
Why play these games? The rules have changed now, because of this. Mr. Sameda now states he is willing to kill us if we "slight him".
Tumblr media
TO DO:
Organize a memorial for Mr. Minami and Mx. Lukashevich.
Ask Nicat for advice.
Ask Mr. Koyasu if he'd like breakfast in bed.
Ask Mr. Torres to teach you first aid.

The job – a career breakthrough – is supposed to go to hoofer Johnny Brett, but a mix-up in names gives it to his partner. Another example of Broadway hopes dashed? Not when Johnny is played by Fred Astaire. Sparkling Cole Porter songs, clever comedy and dance legends Astaire and Eleanor Powell make the final Broadway Melody (co-starring George Murphy) a film to remember. Powell’s nautical “All Ashore" routine (a/k/a I Am the Captain”), Astaire’s blissful “I’ve Got My Eyes on You” and Fred & Eleanor's elaborate routine to Cole Porter's classic "I Concentrate On You" are more than enough to please any fan. But they’re just a warm-up for the leads to tap one finale number into immortality: “Begin the Beguine,” introduced by Frank Sinatra in That’s Entertainment! with, “You can wait around and hope, but you’ll never see the likes of this again.”

Geena Davis and Randy Quaid play accomplices in Grimm’s daring scheme and Jason Robards is the blustery cop caught up in Grimm’s “Clown Day Afternoon.” Swiping a million bucks is a snap compared to getting out of town.  Framed for manslaughter after he breaks a story about city corruption, reporter Frank Ross is sure he’ll prove his innocence and walk out of prison a free man. But that’s not how the system works at Rocky Point Penitentiary. There, cellblock guards are vicious, the jute-mill labor is endless, and the powers Ross fought on the outside conspire to keep him in. Frank’s hope is turned to hopelessness. And he’s starting to crack. Two of the screen’s famed tough guys star in this prison movie that casts a reform-minded eye on the brutalizing effects of life in the slammer. James Cagney “hits a white-hot peak as [Ross,] the embittered, stir-crazy fall guy” (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide). And George Raft (Cagney’s friend since their vaudeville days) portrays racketeer Hood Stacey, who may hold the key to springing Ross.

Michael Grimm
The House Judiciary Committee held a four-hour field hearing in New York City Monday on “victims of violent crime in Manhattan.” The hearing featured personal testimony, but in the process of discussing this important subject, several speakers made misleading statements and attacks on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Watch as former representatives Peter King and Michael Grimm discuss this event and other important takeaways and shed light on what it could mean going forward for the people of New York.

EVENT 002: my bloody valentine CLUE DROP 003: suspect information
official suspect list:  abby anderson, adrian tepes,  armitage hux, baz grimm-pitch, link faron, michael langdon, sam giddings, victor zsasz
trigger warning for this clue drop: various criminal activities mentioned, such as murder.
This wasn’t the worst this day could go. There could be multiple bodies across multiple streets, or all of Market Street could be blown to bits of cobblestone and wiring. They had been lucky, incredibly lucky, to only end up with one tiny, fairly contained disaster. Yet Armes was doubting how long they could continue to contain this disaster, with the clamoring of upset townsfolk directly outside her office window.
Soon, this would no longer be her problem. Soon, this would entirely become  Ms. Kane and Ms. Brown’s problem. Armes would let them do the job they were created for as she dealt with the more clandestine issues of the town that required her direct supervision.
Speaking of Ms. Kane and Ms. Brown,  the two sat in her office now.   They were professional,  clearly.   If they thought they could hide their training,  they were clearly mistaken.  Which is why they would be perfect for taking over the disaster.
“I’ve created a starting point of sorts, for our suspects,” Armes passed two identical lists to her newly crowned investigators. “Those I didn’t see at the dance who have violent proclivities in their pasts.”
“Arthur didn’t do it. He wouldn’t- get off me, Kate-” The blonde one, Ms. Brown, shrugged off Ms. Kane’s hand that had been placed lightly on her shoulder. “I get he had to do some bad shit in his past. Trust me, I get it. But he was a king in a time people were killing each other left and right for fun. He’s not like that anymore.”
“He was what?”  Ms. Kane interrupted her younger companion.
“A king, Kate. I thought I told you?”
“This is the first time I’m hearing about this,  but we can talk about it later.”
It seems, Ms. Brown is in trouble with her elder.
“And anyways,” Ms. Brown’s face turned smug in a way Armes had only seen cats look before. “Arthur was passed out on our couch this morning with Merlin on top of him. I bet they haven’t moved, if you want to go check.”
“Ah, no. I’ll take your word for it. Arthur Pendragon is no longer a suspect,” Armes slashed through his name with red ink. “Abby Anderson, then?”
“I ran into her in the park recently.  If she did this,  it wasn’t her intent but rather her instinct protecting her.  I say we check,  but if it was her - we proceed gently,” Ms. Kane said.   An intelligent response.   They’ll be good for the investigation.
“Seconded! And same with Sam Giddings. She’s kinda rough around the edges but I know her friend and it wouldn’t be because of any maliciousness,” Ms. Brown practically shrieked.
Armes was starting to wish this list was far smaller, just so Ms. Brown could leave her office sooner. She was too old to be dealing with overgrown teenagers like this.
“For our local vampires, every single one is a suspect. We haven’t had the best of luck with them, I’m sure you both remember how Halloween turned out,” Armes fixed them both with a look that had sent her best researchers running for the hills. Best to strike the fear of the gods into them, especially the young one.
“It’s hard to forget,” Ms. Kane muttered under her breath.
“Baz Grimm-Pitch and Adrian Tepes are the two vampires we should look out for, they both have people in town willing to lie for them,” Armes continued.
Ms. Brown, as always, decided to chime in at an inopportune moment. “Isn’t Adrian Tepes the weird guy who lives in a creepy log cabin out in the woods?”
“No, Mr. Tepes lives in a castle out in the woods,” Armes said. “Link Faron is the one in the log cabin, who is also on our list. He has a violent history, starting at as young as ten years of age. Slaughter, trauma-”
“I don’t think we need his entire resume, Ms. Sallow,”  Ms. Kane interjected.   I suppose I’ll forgive it this once.
Ms. Brown made a small “oh” sound, suddenly very interested in the sheet of paper in her hands. Good. Perhaps now the blonde would allow them all to carry on with the investigation uninterrupted.”
“Armitage Hux.  Sounds like a rogue name, but who is he?”  Ms. Kane,  good with moving the conversation along clearly.
“A trouble-maker,” Armes had no patience for those of Mr. Hux’s background. She’d seen the effect his kind had on the world and was not keen to see one of them wreck havoc on her town.
“He works for the Research Center, correct?” Ms. Kane asked,  though it seemed like she already knew the answer to that and was satisfied with it.
“Yes. One of the few there I could never get a handle on.”
Armes let her eyes trail down the list again. If it were up to her, none of them would even be in Sallow Hills. They were all trouble-makers, even the two in front of her. Pulled from their different worlds to be a direct cause of Armes’ migraines. She had her own issues to deal with, with the original townspeople. Until her researchers discovered the secret to the barrier, Armes was slated to deal with all of the newcomers and all the disasters they brought with them.
“And Damien Thorn? Why is he clumped together with Michael Langdon and Lucifer Morningstar?” Ms. Brown asked, voice finally at a reasonable volume.
“Lucifer, while an annoyance, I doubt would pull something like this.  He’s smarter than leaving a dead body where anyone could see,” Ms. Kane said.
“While Mr. Morningstar is a hindrance at his worst, we can’t deny the… demonic parentage of the former two. And how that parentage may be Mr. Morningstar,” Armes coughed. She never did like talking about their kind either.
“You’re kidding right? The actual Antichrist exists and there might just be two of them walking around?! Was anyone going to say anything about that?” And there it was, Ms. Brown back to her usual, screeching volume. “And you think Damien Thorn, the same Damien Thorn who was cleaning up broken beer bottles in the Community Center, is one of them? I don’t think he would even kill a fly with his own life on the line.”
“We can take Mr. Thorn off if it upsets you so dearly. Mr. Morningstar too, however I fear he may take that as an insult.” Pick your battles, Armes.
“Well I agree with the Langdon kid.  He looks like the cult type.”  The way it was bit out by Ms. Kane,  Armes suspected there was some … resentment between the vigilante and cults.  Ms. Brown nodded along,  clearly also having some experience with cult things.
“If he didn’t want us to think he was a cult leader, he wouldn’t look so much like a cult leader.” Such a bitter statement, for one as young as Ms. Brown. “And with how specific some of the vic’s wounds are, it could be an initiation killing.”
Oh joy, a cult. This would have never happened had all the newcomers not been here.  Cults! In her town!
“Speaking of cults,” Ms. Brown piped up again. “The Winchester guy, doesn’t he feel a little ex-culty to you? Very secretive, ‘we protect our own’, and the sheer amount of supposedly hidden weapons I’ve seen them carry. I don’t know, they seem like cult members.”
“I’ve seen him, Sam?, at the library.  He seems focused on that - and on the head librarian Will.   Troubled past, maybe, but not the ‘murder right now’ type,” Ms. Kane added in.  “But didn’t he hang around at Zsasz’s shop?”
“He did, which doesn’t help him in the slightest. Victor Zsasz was actually one of the first I put on that list, along with Michael Myers. Along with Oswald Cobblepot, all of them are-”
“It’s not Oswald!” And now Ms. Brown was standing, hands slammed down on Armes’ desk. There was a hostility to her, one that Armes found she did not like one bit. “He doesn’t even remember Gotham, there’s no way he could still remember how to be a professional killer. I can’t believe you would try and bring up a past he doesn’t even know about against him!”
Was this depth coming from Ms. Brown? The blonde was holding back tears, face contorted into something twisted and tense. It was clear she had a history with Mr. Cobblepot, a familial bond even. Armes had struck a nerve that ran deep. She was about to speak, but decided that a thinly veiled, scathing remark was not the proper response.
“We’re taking the Bird off the list.  Michael - he’s done nothing more than creep some people out around town.  And you have here that the fingerprints were cut off.  Do you think he knew how to do that?”  Ms. Kane stopped the younger one from going off again,  which was a blessing really.
“Take Oswald off. Or Kate and I leave. Have fun figuring out how to deal with a potential serial killer on your own,” Ms. Brown said through gritted teeth.
Armes gave a sigh that spoke of her long, long years of life. Hand reaching to scratch out two more names in brilliant red ink, she couldn’t believe she was bending before someone who was only a few years out of childhood.
“Mr. Cobblepot and Mr. Myers are off. Are we done here, or is there going to be another tantrum over a criminal?”
Ms. Kane stood at that,  tucking her list into a case she had brought with her.  “I think we’re done, Ms. Sallow.  And I’d prefer if you not insult either of us if you want us to help you.  Steph, ready?”
Armes watched as Ms. Brown gathered up the crime scene photographs and suspect lists into a folder, eyes hard. Daring Armes to pick a fight. What a child. Armes waved the two off, watching as the younger closed her office door with a slam that rattled the hinges. If those two were ever in her office again, it would be too soon.
Her hands reorganized the mess littering her desk, reaching out for the latest report on the barrier. Finally, she could focus on the issues plaguing the real townspeople.

Warning Siren
Tai: Papa Dragon to Magic Man, do you copy, over? *imitates radio static*
Oz: I thought we agreed no weird codenames...over.
Tai: Force of habit from old training, sorry. You said the reports came from the Moonlight Ridge Trail, right?
Oz: Positive, a report came in about a missing hiker two days ago. They had checked in to the campsite across the river in that time and never came back, quite strange.
Tai: Who better than to call a member of Team STRQ! I’ll have this kid found in no time.
Oz: Don’t go bragging just yet Tai, we’re not sure what this Grimm is.
Tai: Probably just an Ursa too big for its pants, call you back in a jiff! *hangs up* Alright, let’s get this hunt started.
The evening sun shone in the sky, close to setting among the tree riddled horizon. A gentle breeze flowing through the trees paired with the chirping of birds, it all made the retire Huntsman feel good, a simple search and rescue on a beautiful remaining day, “Should bring the family out here for a picnic one day,” he thought to himself. His inner chat halted when the peaceful sounds were crudely interrupted by the piercing wail of a siren miles away from the trail, causing birds to flee to the sky, it lasted for several seconds before dying down. Perplexed, he called again.
Tai: Hey uh, Oz, when did a tornado siren get installed in this place?
Oz: Er-...the park didn’t get one.....Tai is everything okay down there?
Tai: Yeah just, are you sure no new tech was put here...?
Oz: ...be careful out there. *ends call*
Raising an eyebrow, Taiyang continued forward. A few feet away he saw backpack presumably belonging to the missing hiker, jogging up he searched the contents. Yep, usual camping gear and essentials, food, flashlight, water, spare socks, nothing out of the ordinary, however he did take a picture on his Scroll for evidence. To the left of the dragon brawler’s eyes widened...in a bush he could see etches of clothing hanging from the small branches, right next to gargantuan claw marks on the ground. Rushing over he studied them, too big to be an Ursa’s yet way bigger than a Nevermore’s, he didn’t know what to make of it. He took another picture, shaking the chill from his back.
Tai: Okay, just breathe big man, you can fight this thing...whatever it is.
Walking up the trail some more he came across the same marks, though much deeper than the last. Getting closer he could tell that whatever this Grimm was, it was big and hungry, or angry. “Probably both,” he said to himself, taking yet another photo. Pressing on he took a few turns down the dirt laden path, a sense of dread lingering in the air, the feeling of him being watched...observed even, a predator studying its prey before the inevitable pounce and strike for the jugular, Tai couldn’t shake it. Something was very wrong here...
Tai: *sniff* UUUGH, what the hell...?!
Plugging his nose, a raw strong smell of iron and rotting meat filled his nostrils, getting stronger the direction he was heading. Coming to a small clearing of four trees, the biggest tree in front of him had something hard to make out in front of it, whatever it was, it was probably dead for flies had begun swarming it, a meal and breeding ground for their young. Unable to see he took his Scroll and used its flashlight mode.
Tai: ................
One thing’s for sure, he found the hiker...what remained of them that is. At the base of the big tree was a desecrated pile of meat and bones, ribs pointing to the sky, entrails littered around it in a puddle of blood, covering the bark in red ichor, in a branch he could see more tattered clothing, a stained bloody claw mark dragged long across the dirt away from the large tower of wood. Tai gingerly stepped forward, despite every molecule in his body screaming for him to run, away from the pulverized flesh and to his car, anywhere that wasn’t this forest. He nearly jumped out of his skin when his former headmaster called in.
Oz: Tai! You ne-*static*...to lea-*static*...you are in grave dange-!*static plus sharp ringing*
Tai: Guh!!! Oz, Ozpin are you there?!
Belaying the grating noise, he took one last picture before ending the call. But the noise persisted after his call ended, all around him he could hear the ringing white noise stab his eardrums relentlessly. Focusing more clearly, it originated behind him, naturally he turned to face it...god above did he regret doing so. What stood before him could hardly be called a Grimm, even though it was, the creature utterly towered over Tai, at least forty feet, it’s gangly bony arms nearly dragged along the ground, the same length as the legs. Each digit ended in sharp pointed nails, the fingers caked in fresh blood. Its body was vaguely humanoid and incredibly emaciated, a rib-cage and pelvis visible under the taught, pale skin littered with black patches of varying lengths. Its face...a short skinny neck held three mouths, two thin ones on the side, one wide in the center, all filled with yellow cavity-rotted teeth too big for each. The left most mouth ground its teeth together to make the ringing, the right most clacked non-stop to produce the static, the center mouth did nothing aside emit a raspy breath after a snarling wet inhale.
What made Tai run faster than his lungs could keep up, he would never know, he simply did without thinking. Behind him the freakish Grimm pursued with fevered vigor, crawling on all fours in the fashion of a demonic puppet. He vaulted over the trail’s gate, hopped into his car, revved the engine then sped off, literally hell on wheels, speed laws be damned. Once Tai got to the open road his Scroll vibrated to life.
Oz: Tai, Tai are you alright?!
Tai: *pant pant* Yep... *gulp* Found the hiker.
Oz: They’re not-?
Tai: Nope......nothing left of them. That th-thing...the Grimm...*deep breath*
Oz: I know, the park ranger showed me photos of it.
Tai: Well, yer’ gonna get more soon...
Peering into his rear view mirror, he swore he could the monster among the trees, almost blending in with its thin frame.
---
“You didn’t get him in time? Hmm, I underestimated his stamina, fret not my gnarled pet, your efforts were valiant enough,” the white-hooded young man exclaimed to the beast.
The Grimm hummed in content, chewing the remains of its kill, its master chuckling in response.
“Honestly brother, you coddle your creations too much, he failed in catching the Xiao Long, why not dispose of him,” the younger girl asked her brother curiously.
“We got what we needed, add this to our database and we’re one Hunter closer to combating Ruby Rose’s group and disposing of them once and for all.” He said devilishly grinning, taking his Scroll out of his pocket to review Tai punching the Grimm’s hand away in a blast of golden fire, then bolting under its legs.
“One step closer, Bete, and our plan will be complete...”
“One step closer, more of them dead at our feet, Michael.”
“One step closer to avenging the death of our mother.”

Artificial Intelligence Gives Researchers the Scoop on Ancient Poop
Tumblr media
Everybody poops—and after a few thousand years underground, these droppings often start to look the same. That stool-based similarity poses something of a puzzle for archaeologists investigating sites where dogs and humans once cohabited, as it isn’t always easy to deduce which species left behind specific feces.
But as a team of researchers writes in the journal PeerJ, a newly developed artificial intelligence system may end these troubles once and for all. Called corpoID—an homage to “coprolite,” the formal term for fossilized feces—the program is able to distinguish the subtle differences between ancient samples of human and canine excrement based on DNA data alone, reports David Grimm for Science magazine.
Applied to feces unearthed from sites around the world, the new method could help researchers unveil a trove of valuable information about a defecator’s diet, health, and perhaps—if the excretion contains enough usable DNA—identity. But in places where domesticated dogs once roamed, canine and human DNA often end up mixed in the same fecal samples: Dogs are known to snack on people’s poop, and some humans have historically dined on canine meat.
Still, differences in the defecations do exist—especially when considering the genetic information left behind by the microbiome, or the microbes that inhabit the guts of all animals. Because microbiomes vary from species to species (and even from individual to individual within a species), they can be useful tools in telling droppings apart.
To capitalize on these genetic differences, a team led by Maxime Borry of Germany’s Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History trained a computer to analyze the DNA in fossilized feces, comparing it to known samples of modern human and canine stool. The researchers then tested the program’s performance on a set of 20 samples with known (or at least strongly suspected) species origins, including seven that only contained sediments.
The system was able to identify all of the sediments as “uncertain,” and it correctly classified seven other samples as either dog or human. But the final six appeared to stump the program.

Ancient feces analyzed for the study
(Borry et al.)
Writing in the study, Borry and his colleagues suggest that the system may have struggled to identify microbiomes that didn’t fall in line with modern human and canine samples. People who had recently eaten large quantities of dog meat, for instance, might have thrown the program for a loop. Alternatively, ancient dogs with unusual diets could have harbored gut microbes that differed vastly from their peers, or from modern samples.
“There is not so much known about the microbiome of dogs,” Borry tells Vice’s Becky Ferreira.
With more information on how diverse canine gut microbes can get, he says, the team’s machine learning program may have a shot at performing better.
Ainara Sistiaga, a molecular geoarchaeologist at the University of Copenhagen who wasn’t involved in the study, echoes this sentiment in an interview with Science, pointing out that the data used to train coproID came exclusively from dogs living in the modern Western world. It therefore represented just a small sliver of the riches found in canine feces.
CoproID also failed to determine the origins of highly degraded samples that contained only minimal microbial DNA. With these issues and others, “there are definite issues that need to be resolved before the method can be used widely,” Lisa-Marie Shillito, an archaeologist at Newcastle University who wasn’t involved in the study, tells Michael Le Page of New Scientist.
With more tinkering, the method could reveal a great deal about the history of humans and dogs alike—including details about how the two species first became close companions, Melinda Zeder, an archaeozoologist at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History who wasn’t involved in the study, tells Science.
As dogs swapped the fleshy, protein-heavy diets of their wolfish ancestors for starchy human fare, their gut microbes were almost certainly taken along for the ride. Even thousands of years after the fact, feces could benchmark this transition.
Says Zeder, “The ability to track this through time is really exciting.”

Trump fired another watchdog. If he's ever going to be held accountable, voters will have to do it

Editorial: Trump fired another watchdog. If he's ever going to be held accountable, voters will have to do it
The Times Editorial Board
Los Angeles Times OpinionMay 19, 2020, 6:00 AM EDT
Democrats suggest that Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo, above, was being investigated by Inspector General Steve Linick. (Carolyn Kaster / Associated Press)
It’s too soon to say for certain that President Trump's firing of State Department Inspector General Steve A. Linick was a politically motivated effort to stop Linick from doing his job, but the administration’s record of muzzling watchdogs inspires little confidence that his removal was appropriate. After Trump fired Linick on Friday, saying that he had lost confidence in him, Democrats in Congress indicated that the inspector general had been investigating actions by Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and that his firing might have been an illegal act of retaliation. Initial reports of the firing focused on an investigation Linick was said to be conducting into Pompeo's alleged use of employees to perform personal errands. (Pompeo told the Washington Post that he did not know Linick had been investigating him.)
But on Monday, Rep. Eliot L. Engel (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Linick also was investigating — at Engel’s request — Trump’s declaration of an emergency last year to expedite arms sales to Saudi Arabia without congressional review. Linick, a former assistant U.S. attorney in California and Virginia, was appointed to his position by former President Obama, but there is no sign that he was a partisan operative. A report issued by his office in 2016 was critical of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she served as secretary of State, a practice that proved to be a potent campaign issue for Trump. During the current administration, Linick has criticized the State Department’s handling of personnel issues, accusing some of the president’s appointees of retaliating against career officials. Linick also played a peripheral role in Trump’s impeachment, turning over to House investigators documents apparently sent by the White House to the State Department that promoted conspiracy theories about Ukrainian involvement in the 2016 U.S. election.
Emboldened by his acquittal in the Senate, Trump has engaged in a petulant purge of officials connected to his impeachment, including Michael Atkinson, the former inspector general of the intelligence community. Atkinson rightly had notified Congress about a whistleblower complaint he deemed urgent; it turned out to revolve around Trump’s outrageous attempt to have Ukraine investigate a prospective political opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden.Trump also demoted Glenn Fine, the widely respected acting inspector general of the Defense Department, in the process stripping Fine of his role as chairman of a committee monitoring how the administration spends trillions of dollars in COVID-19 pandemic relief approved by Congress.
Trump also has moved against Christi A. Grimm, the acting head of the inspector general’s office in the Department of Health and Human Services. Grimm angered Trump by issuing a report that found that U.S. hospitals were dealing with "severe" and "widespread" shortages of COVID-19 testing supplies and personal protective equipment. After that incident, Trump nominated a new permanent inspector general to replace Grimm.
After Trump fired Atkinson, Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department inspector general and chairman of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, issued a statement praising Atkinson for “his integrity, professionalism, and commitment to the rule of law and independent oversight.” Horowitz also promised that inspectors general would “continue to conduct aggressive independent oversight,” including of pandemic-related spending.
Brave words, but inspectors general in key departments serve at the pleasure of the president, and this president repeatedly has expressed displeasure when watchdogs barked. Congress also has oversight responsibility, and House Democrats have promised to scrutinize Linick’s firing. If Pompeo and Trump believe that Linick exceeded his authority or was "undermining" the State Department instead of elevating its work, as Pompeo asserted on Monday, or that he wasn't stopping people in his office from leaking drafts of its reports, as a top State Department official told the Washington Post, they need to make that case to Congress.
But even if it were to be established that Trump wrongly dismissed Linick, the president is unlikely to alter his behavior as long as congressional Republicans (with a few honorable exceptions such as Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah) act as his apologists and enablers. The only sure remedy for Trump’s aversion to oversight is his removal by the watchdogs he should fear the most — the voters.
