Twilight Advent Calendar, Day 11
Dec. 11 - Besides painting, what art forms does Esme enjoy? How do you imagine her art room/setup looks? (Fan artists, want to show us?)
Masterpost/Prompts
In addition to painting (and photography, 100% agreed with @needahugfromesme's fabulous art), Esme likes to combine her building skill with her creative eye. Mind you, I think it took her a very long time to a) value her art as much as those around her did b) get over the idea that there were things women shouldn't do—painting has always felt more womanly—and c) feel comfortable with her vampire nature enough to exploit it but these days, some of her most intriguing art pieces are absolutely INSANE installations. Like, "managed to weld a light in sideways from a forty-foot ceiling" insane. She likes the interface of architecture and sculpture, and she likes to do things with light and shadow. She often recruits Rosalie to help her with the metallurgy.
While some of her most unique installations are large and complicated structures of metal, wood, and light which seem to defy gravity thanks to her ability to hang from a ceiling by a finger for hours on end, one of her most powerful, and personal, hung tiny pieces of metal vertically so that the eye would take in different shapes depending on whether they were viewed from one angle or from ninety degrees to its side. The metal was arranged such so that it spelled words: RAPE/RESILIENCE was one; VICTIM/SURVIVOR was another; and so on.
It made her husband weep. Then they placed it in the Moco in Barcelona.

Alright so I work at a library in a red county in California and since Trump’s inauguration and specifically seeing the executive orders he passed, and then his little butt-buddy Elon throwing a FULL sieg heil salute, I have been feeling desperate to help fix this. Obviously I’m just one person, I can’t do much, but I can’t just do *nothing*, and I haven’t found anything near me for any direct action so I did this.
I’ve been seeing book recommendations float around on here and TikTok and I felt like it was a good idea to make a display of them in case anyone comes into the library feeling helpless and scared because of what is happening in our country.
It’s not an exhaustive list, it was only what we had catalogued and in the main branch BUT I think it’s pretty good.

CONCERT REVIEW: The Struts - Live at the Drive In (19 August 2020)
Starlight Drive-In, Butler, Pennsylvania
For my first real post on Troubled Times Music Review, I’ll be discussing a show I went to recently. I had the pleasure of seeing The Struts for the 2nd time (the first being in 2018, opening for Foo Fighters). I was so excited to see that The Struts would be coming to Butler, as this is about 40 minutes away from me. I usually have to drive 1-2 hours to either Pittsburgh or Cleveland for shows. Other than that, I finally got to see some live music! I’ve only been to live stream concerts in 2020 (as well as seeing a friend’s band, which is still enjoyable but isn’t exactly the same). Overall, this was a great night and I’m glad I got to experience it. Keep reading for more!
Nick Perri & The Underground Thieves
I’ll start by talking about the opening band: Nick Perri & The Underground Thieves. This band hails from Philadelphia and is led by musician/producer Nick Perri. Before this show was announced, I had never heard of this band. I’m glad I know them now. I first listened to them a few days before the show. When doing this, I realised that their debut album, Sun Via, came out on 14 August. I won’t go into too much detail about this album since this is a concert review, but the album is great. Check it out!
Lineup at This Show
Nick Perri - Lead vocals, guitar
Brian Weaver - Bass
Justin DiFebbo - Keys
Michael Montesano - Backing vocals, maracas, guitar
Anthony Montesano - Backing vocals, tambourine
Zil Fessler - Drums
Setlist
Let You Know
Feeling Good
I Want You
Modern Man (Unreleased song)
Excess
*”White Noise” and “Everybody Wants One” were played during soundcheck but not during the show*
The Struts
The Struts are a band I would 100% recommend to anyone. On top of the heaps of talent within this band and the relatability of their music, concertgoers find themselves craving more. They put on one hell of a show. As much as we might not like to admit it, some of our favourite bands just aren’t nearly as good live as in recordings. This is not one of those bands. The only disappointing thing about their shows is that they end. This particular one consisted mostly of high energy songs that you can’t help but dance to, even with 6+ feet between you and everyone else. With stellar vocals and invigorating instrumentals, The Struts’ performance is one you don’t want to miss.
Lineup at This Show
Luke Spiller - Lead vocals
Adam Slack - Guitar
Jed Elliott - Bass
Gethin Davies - Drums
Jesse Blum (MisterWives) - Trumpet
Mike Murphy (Misterwives) - Saxophone
Setlist
Primadonna Like Me
Body Talks
Kiss This
Fire (Part 1)
One Night Only
Strange Days (Unreleased song)
Another Hit of Showmanship (Unreleased song
I Do It So Well
Cool (Unreleased song; with Nick Perri)
Put Your Money On Me
Where Did She Go
Encore
Could Have Been Me
Overall Opinion
Not to be dramatic or anything, but The Struts are one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live. This show was no exception. We were in the 2nd row of cars, pretty much in the middle, so the only spot that would have been better was the one in front of us. We could see the stage perfectly, which I’m so happy about. Concerts are hard for short people. As someone who is prone to seizures, I get kind of nervous about shows and that the flashing lights might bother me. Unfortunately, it’s happened before. At this one, however, the lights were just the right level of flashy to not be bothersome. The only real inconvenience at this show was that they had special drive-in concert shirts and posters, but they sold all of them in Philadelphia the night before so I couldn’t get one. But I’m just thankful to have been able to go to a concert, and a great one at that!
Overall Rating
10/10!

ROYAL: It's not that simple, you know? I'm an ex-convict - you know? - just to keep it real. But still, I have to eat. I have to still try and find employment, but I have those barriers against me.
FESSLER: Including a severely injured leg. Some people here do work but not enough. One man told me he has a janitorial job at the Baltimore Orioles stadium but only when the team is in town. Royal says others here face different barriers, such as homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction.
ROYAL: People don't want to not have jobs, you know? That's sort of a myth that's created. Everybody I know want to work - everybody.
MICHAEL J. WILSON: Threatening to take away their food doesn't help them get a job.
FESSLER: Michael J. Wilson is director of Maryland Hunger Solutions, an advocacy group. He notes that by the administration's own admission, 755,000 individuals would not meet the new requirements. And it's not just for lack of work, says Wilson, but lack of other options.
WILSON: If all those folks showed up at a job training site tomorrow, they would swamp the offices. There's not enough space for them to be able to do this.

Today, instead of actually living and experiencing things, we have become obsessed with superficial moments that can be shared on social media. We have forgotten about the conversations, relationships and adventures that we could have if we just took the time to get to know people. This film is about what happens if we do. We follow an encounter between Alice and Ali. Alice is a 25-year-old documentary photographer and activist who spent much time on the frontlines of the European refugee crisis. Ali works in Oman to support his family back in Pakistan. For 8 months of the year he lives in the desert without seeing his wife, daughters or friends. We documented what happens in the days after Alice takes a photo of Ali. They are not actors and there was no script. This is the real story of people getting to know each other. We captured their conversations and slowly discover Ali’s heartbreaking story. As well as his surprising attitude to his circumstances. The film was shot on analog to focus on what was really essential. And to reinforce how valuable authentic moments really are – something that is easy to forget with the slickness and disposability of digital film. With “The Encounter” we wanted to remind people about the real connections they could be missing. Because every person has a story. If you take the time to listen.
