Südengland 2023 - Tag 23
Ladies and Gentlemen!
Hat irgendjemand schon einmal etwas von Volks Electric Railway (Volks elektrischer Eisenbahn) gehört? Nein? Ich ebenfalls nicht, der Micha nicht und der Hasenbär kann sich auch nicht erinnern.
Dafür waren wir heute ins östliche Brighton, zur Marina, gefahren. Dort gibt es ganz gute Parkmöglichkeiten und wir kauften uns dort ein Ticket für diese Bimmelbahn, quasi deutschen Ursprungs.
Dass die Parkmöglichkeiten dort hinten recht gut sind, haben vor allem die Reisebusfahrer auch schon mitbekommen. Bestimmt an die 50 Busse aus allen Ecken Europas standen dort Stoßstange an Stoßstange. Die meisten kamen aus Deutschland.
Während wir auf unseren Wagen der V,E.R. warteten, witzelten wir: was wir vor rund 80 Jahren nicht geschafft haben, versuchen wir jetzt auf anderen Wegen -die Invasion Britanniens per Reisebus.
Magnus Volk war ein Sohn deutscher Einwanderer und begeisterter Erfinder. Als junger Mann baute Magnus gerne Maschinen und experimentierte mit Elektrizität. Schnell wurde er zum Experten in Sachen Elektrik.
1879 brachte er das erste Telefonsystem nach Brighton und installierte es in seinem Haus und dem seines Freundes William Jago. Ein Jahr später, im Alter von 29 Jahren, war er der Erste an der Südküste Englands, der sein Haus mit elektrischem Licht ausstattete.
Magnus' berühmteste Erfindung waren seine Eisenbahnen. Am Mittag des 4. August 1883 präsentierte er den Einwohnern von Brighton seine neueste Kreation – eine elektrische Eisenbahn, die über eine Viertelmeile von 2 Fuß Spurweite verkehrt und sich von einem Standort an der Küste gegenüber dem Aquarium bis zum Chain Pier erstreckt.
Kaum war die Eisenbahn geöffnet, als Magnus um Befugnisse bat, sie entlang des Strandes nach Westen bis zur Stadtgrenze zu verlängern. Zu seiner Bestürzung lehnte der Rat diesen Vorschlag ab, so dass er die Richtung umkehrte und erfolgreich die Genehmigung erhielt, die Strecke vom Aquarium nach Osten zu erweitern. Er sicherte sich auch die Anmietung des „Bogens“ am Paston Place, um Werkstatt- und Energieeinrichtungen bereitzustellen.
Die erweiterte Linie wurde am 4. April 1884 mit einem Wagen eröffnet. Mit der Ankunft des zweiten Wagens wurde Sommer wie Winter täglich (außer sonntags bis 1903) ein 5- oder 6-Minuten-Service angeboten – sofern Wetter und Sturmschäden es zuließen.
Obwohl es ständige Probleme mit den Fischern und Kutschern gab, die neben der Strecke arbeiteten, erwies sich Volk's Electric Railway als sehr beliebt und zog viele Fahrgäste an. Um mit diesem Verkehrszuwachs fertig zu werden, wurden 1892 zwei neue Wagen (Nummer 3 und 4) in Dienst gestellt, und ein fünfter Wagen folgte 1897.
1930 wurde auch ein speziell gebauter Winterwagen eingeführt – der letzte Wagen, der speziell für die Volk's Electric Railway gebaut wurde.
Bis heute ist die Railway immer noch in Betrieb, damit ist sie die älteste elektrische Eisenbahn der Welt.
Wir fuhren die ganze Strecke von sa-gen-haf-ten 1,6 Kilometern, bis kurz vor den weltberühmten Brighton Pier. Die restlichen Meter gehen wir zu Fuß.
Der Brighton Pier ist die Mutter aller Pier Amusement Parks weltweit. Tatsächlich wurden in Brighton anfangs drei Piere gebaut - nur noch einer ist davon existent.
Ursprünglich wurden diese Piere für die reichen Bürger Londons gebaut, die es sich leisten konnten, mit Zügen an den Ärmelkanal zu fahren, um die frische und salzhaltige Seeluft zu genießen.
Der aktuelle Brighton Pier ist eigentlich der Palace Pier und machte 1899 seine Pforten auf. Drei Jahre lang wurde intensiv gebaut.
Der damals berühmtere West Pier von 1866 wurde 1976 geschlossen und ist mittlerweile mehrfach abgebrannt. Nur noch sein Gerippe steht traurig und verloren im Meer.
Ein Schicksal, welches beinahe auch dem jetzigen Brighton Pier 2003 passiert wäre, aber es entstand nur ein kleinerer Schaden.
Der Pier hat eine unglaubliche Größe, mehr als einen halben Kilometer ragt er ins Meer. Am Ende des Piers befindet sich ein ausgewachsener Vergnügungspark mit einigen Karussells und zwei Achterbahnen.
Am Anfang glich der Pier einem langen Steg, an dessen Ende sich eine Plattform mit Holzgebäuden befand. Man verlangte vor dem Betreten der Piere Eintrittsgelder.
Viele Londoner Ärzte empfahlen Ihren Patienten, unbedingt nach Brighton zu fahren und die Piere zu betreten („...draußen auf dem Wasser ist die Luft für Sie gesünder...“). Inwiefern die Vermarktungsstrategie des Unternehmens auf diese Empfehlungen Einfluss hatte verliert sich im Nebel der Geschichte.
Schon kurz nach der Eröffnung fing man an, die Besucher durch Kapellen zu unterhalten, die auf der Pier im Freien standen. Bis auf Toilettenhäuschen und eine längliche Überdachung mit Sitzplätzen gab es keine Gebäude.
Später wurde ein großer Pavillon im viktorianischen Stil gebaut, der über 1000 Menschen aufnehmen konnte. Im Außenbereich hatten rund 300 Menschen Platz, um sich von der Sonne verwöhnen zu lassen. Im Pavillon selbst waren ein Telegraph-Office, Gastronomie, ein großer Theatersaal mit Logen und moderne Toiletten untergebracht.
Schon Anfang der siebziger Jahre wandelte sich der Pier zu einer Vergnügungsmeile mit Karussells und Spielautomaten. Seit Kriegsende hatte sich das Publikum in Brighton stark verändert, nun kam zunehmend auch der „kleine Mann“ in das bis dahin mondäne Seebad.
Die historischen Hotels und Häuser lassen nur noch erahnen, wie kapitalkräftig die Gäste früher gewesen sein müssen.
Heute macht alles einen recht herunter gekommenen Eindruck. Auffallend sind auch die vielen Obdachlosen in der ganzen Stadt und in vielen Eingängen riecht es unangenehm nach Urin. Das wundert uns auch gar nicht, denn viele öffentliche Toiletten sind schlichtweg geschlossen.
Was eine solche Pier Konstruktion, an der rauen Nordseeküste, so alles aushalten kann lässt uns nur staunen. Die Wartung des Brighton Palace Pier ist deshalb auch ein kontinuierlicher Vorgang, der täglich von einem Wartungsteam namens “Deck Hands” durchgeführt wird.
Die vollständige Bemalung des Brighton Palace Pier dauert drei Monate, diese Aufgabe wird jedes Jahr ausgeführt. Taucher werden eingesetzt, um die Stahlunterkonstruktion zu vermessen und zu warten, die den gesamten Aufbau trägt. In den letzten zehn Jahren wurden etliche Millionen in die Instandhaltung des Brighton Palace Pier investiert.
Gegenüber dem berühmten Brighton Palace Pier liegt das zweitälteste funktionierende Aquarium der Welt – das heutige Sea Life Brighton. Getrennt durch eine der Hauptverkehrsadern der Stadt, die Old Steine Street.
Das Aquarium wurde 1872 eingeweiht, entworfen von dem Architekten Eugenius Birch, der auch für den Bau des beliebten West Piers verantwortlich war.
Die Baukosten für den Prachtbau betrugen damals 133.000 £ (entspricht heute etwa unglaublichen 5,5 Millionen £).
Im Laufe mehrerer Jahrzehnte wurde das Aquarium mehrfach umgebaut. Leider überstand es die Bombenangriffe im Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht, wurde danach aber wieder aufgebaut.
Neben Vorführungen von Meereslebewesen gab es früher regelmäßig Konzerte, ein Automuseum (1960er Jahre) und ein Delfinarium (1991 abgeschafft). Am Standort des Delfinariums wurde für 2,7 Millionen Pfund in ein künstliches Korallenriff investiert.
Am Nachmittag zuckeln wir mit einer der letzten Bahnen zurück (um 17.15 Uhr fährt die Letzte) zur Black Rock Station.
Von dort fahren wir mit unserem Auto zurück in unser Appartement nach Lancing. Was sind wir froh, dass wir keine passende Unterkunft in Brighton selbst finden konnten. Das ist uns alles viel zu laut und zu trubelig.

Adoptie binnenkort weer mogelijk uit zes geselecteerde landen
Het adopteren van een kind uit de Filipijnen, Hongarije, Lesotho, Taiwan, Thailand en Zuid-Afrika blijft mogelijk. De samenwerking met deze landen wordt intensiever wat ten goede komt aan de te voeren procedures. Een besluit over de samenwerkingsrelatie met Bulgarije en Portugal wordt verwacht in het eerste kwartaal van 2023 nadat nader onderzoek is gedaan door de Centrale autoriteit Internationale Kinderaangelegenheden. De adoptierelatie met de Verenigde Staten, China, Slowakije, Tsjechië, Peru, Columbia, Burkina Faso en Haïti wordt afgebouwd. Aan de hand van een aantal criteria is een beoordeling gemaakt van de samenwerkingsrelatie met landen van herkomst. Op basis hiervan is deze keuze tot stand gekomen. Er is onder andere gekeken naar de noodzaak en de behoefte vanuit het land van herkomst voor interlandelijke adoptie, de wijze waarop gezocht wordt naar opvang in eigen land en de veiligheidssituatie. Het feit dat een adoptierelatie wordt afgebouwd betekent niet dat er misstanden zijn ontdekt of worden vermoed. Het uitgangspunt is dat de procedures voor die aspirant-adoptiefouders waarvan het dossier reeds in het land van herkomst is ingediend, vervolgd kunnen worden. Hierover zal de Centrale autoriteit in overleg treden met deze landen. “In de afgelopen periode zijn er belangrijke stappen gezet op het gebied van interlandelijke adoptie. Nu duidelijk is uit welke landen interlandelijke adoptie mogelijk blijft en welke niet, volgen informatie- en voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten en worden gezinsonderzoeken hervat. Hiermee komt voor de betrokkenen een einde aan een onzekere tijd”. Zegt Minister Weerwind. Binnenlandse afstand en adoptie Op 1 oktober is de commissie onderzoek naar binnenlandse afstand en adoptie geïnstalleerd. De commissie onder leiding van professor doctor Micha de Winter gaat de geschiedenis van binnenlandse afstand en adoptie onderzoeken in de periode tussen 1956 en 1984. Ich wurde die Tage gefragt, ob ich privat auch noch Lust habe zu fotografieren. Die Antwort ist natürlich - JA! Ich fotografiere privat noch sehr viel und hab mein Kamera auch fast immer dabei! So finde ich auch immer meinen "Fotografischen-Ausgleich". Das sieht man bei meinen privaten Fotos deutlich. Diese sind immer sehr ruhig, düster und generell sehr moody. Im Gegensatz zu meinen Hochzeitsfotos die immer sehr bunt, hell und lebendig sind. Dieses Foto entstand im Ober-Olmer Wald bei Mainz. Im Jahr 1951 wurde das Gebiet von der United States Army beschlagnahmt und bis 1991 militärisch (u. a. für NIKE-Stellungen) genutzt. Nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges wurden die Stellungen abgebaut und ab Mitte der Neunziger Jahre wurde der Wald mit seinen zahlreichen – dann nicht mehr genutzten – militärischen Anlagen im Rahmen des Ökologischen Modellprojektes Konversion Ober-Olmer-Waldwieder der zivilen Nutzung zugeführt. . Who is more likely to catch a cold? As a result, when they returned home, Sebastian was the “secret visitor” who kept climbing through Lizzy’s window bringing tomato fennel soup (“my lady needs something to warm her up—or would you prefer to hold onto me instead?”), hibiscus tea (“I’ve read it suppresses the flu and the color reminded me of your flushed cheeks in winter”), and soft banana bread (“though you hide it well I am well aware of your sweet tooth, my lady.”)
Who hogs the blankets? Lizzy. She buries herself in blankets when she sleep and while Sebastian thought it was quite endearing at first he became rather annoyed that she would rather hold onto cloth than himself. (Though he’ll deny it to the ninth circle of hell.) To compensate, he stripped the bed of all covering except one comforter and when Lizzy mentioned she was cold, Sebastian conveniently appeared with a smirk on his lips going, “Ah, but I, on the other hand, do burn hotter than the rest. Perhaps if I laid down beside you, you wouldn’t be so cold?”
Who kills all the flowers? To keep up with his perfect butler aesthetic, Sebastian has to preserve all flowers but in reality, he cares very little for the insignificant little plants. (Ex: during one mission to Strawberry Hill Gothic Sebastian cheerfully trampled over a bed of roses without a second thought.) Yet strangely enough, he’s begun to hold a strange affection for the pink carnation—it’s a flower as simple as the rest but when the Lady Elizabeth mentioned it was her favorite flower, well. He simply couldn’t bring himself to discard it so easily.
Who eats all the candy before Halloween? Surprisingly…Lizzy! While everyone knows of Ciel and Charles Grey’s fondness for sweets (and food in general in Grey’s case), Lizzy’s actually a consummate snacker. She loves tasteful, well-prepared food and when it comes to Sebastian, everything is homemade—including the Halloween candy. So whenever Lizzy comes over to Phantomhive Manor during the October month she heads straight for the kitchens and Sebastian’s handcrafted confections. (“Really my lady, you’re sweet enough already.” He murmured, lips coming to press a silencing kiss on Lizzy’s rose bloom mouth.)
Who takes the longest showers? Lizzy. And Sebastian has absolutely no problem with it. In fact, he’s a very, very attentive butler—preparing her bath oils and shampoo, lighting incense and candles. After all, he is one hell of a butler and must perform his due diligence. “In fact, my lady, would you prefer I stay here? I could provide any service you wish, after all.”
Who goes to bed at 5am but wakes up at 8am? Neither. Sebastian’s awake 24/7 and Lizzy (being the healthy child she is) goes to bed at 10 PM and wakes up 7 AM sharp each and every day.
Who makes sure the other has a healthy breakfast? Sebastian. “Unlike my young master, you need far more nutrients than he,” Sebastian chided gently, “from what I gather the marchioness has put you on a most strenuous training regime and a simple meal of eggs and toast will not do.”
What pets do they have? An ultra fluffy white Cymric cat named Gretchen Margaret. (And yes, Sebastian named it after the love interest of Heinrich Faust XD)
Wedding
Who proposes? Sebastian. After the end of his and Ciel’s contract, Sebastian elects to stay on the human plane for “a little while longer.” In fact, he’s become utterly intoxicated with the purity of Lady Elizabeth’s soul. (She shines, the demon notes with a hint of feral glee in his carnelian eyes, with the same passion and light as that other great heroine—my, my Lady Joan of Arc, the butler mused, have you been reborn?) —> But because Sebastian’s also one hell of a possessive demon, he decides to “brand” Lady Elizabeth with a new type of contract: marriage. He goes over the top of course: whisking Lizzy away to China’s imperial city and proposing to her under a full silvery moon while plum blossoms and freesias scent the cool night air.
Who actually enjoyed the planning? Honestly it was hard to tell but Sebastian’s “mild interest” soon gave way to full blown Bridezilla tendencies, micromanaging every last tiny little detail until the actual wedding planner quit (“You want this job so bad? Well you can have it!”) and Sebastian cheerfully took charge.
Would their wedding be small or grand? Despite Sebastian’s “humble” status, the wedding is a full blown outdoor extravaganza held at Midford Castle. Noble guests from around the globe just magically appeared (“I’ve known many people in my lifetime, marchioness,” Sebastian smiled at Frances’s inquiry, “and it appears they’ve remembered me better than I’ve remembered them.”) and as a “surprise” wedding gift, her majesty named Sebastian the new Earl Phantomhive. Now wasn’t that convenient?
Which guest was happiest to see them get married? Sieglinde. She thinks this is possibly the hottest thing ever and is already planning the various ways she might convince Lizzy to agree to a ménage à trois.
Children
How many children would they have? Sebastian’s never met a half-human, half-demon hybrid before but is quite interested in investigating the matter. And because he’s such a contentious scientist of the new and strange, he insists that he and Lizzy have multiple offspring so that he can better examine and observe them. (Large sample sizes and repetition do make for better results, hm?) As a result, they end up with 4 kids.
Would they adopt or have them naturally? Naturally.
Who is the strictest parent? Sebastian. He is mindful, tentative, a tad (a lot) overbearing, and actually extremely protective of his children which he finds odd. He has no plans of consuming their souls, they don’t have the bright, shining light of purity as Elizabeth does. They’re simply children. Their children. And he’s rather…fond of them. Wants to see them succeed and do well. To live. To thrive.
Are their children in homeschool or public school? Privately educated by one Sebastian Michaelis. Later sent to Weston where there’s an even divide of Midford-Michaelis kids between Blue and Green House.
Who is the favorite parent? The children feel an indescribable and almost supernatural bond with their father but adore/feel more comfortable around their mother.
Who checks on the kids in the middle of the night? Sebastian. He never sleeps and—while this is something he will never, ever admit—used to sing lullabies to the kids when they were young to keep the nightmares at bay. Because, despite being a demon who delights in seeing the suffering of others, he simply can’t bear to see his own children harmed or unhappy.
Who decorated the nursery? Elizabeth—with Sebastian’s help. His original idea had been rather grim to put it mildly. (Ebony floorboards, obsidian walls, ruby chandeliers, and a cradle made of African black wood.) So they compromised and went for a traditional nursery: pale lavender silk walls, looming windows covered by satin drapes, a monstrous baby crib that could fit three people, furniture made of pearl colored satinwood, white carpeting, and a crystal chandelier imported from France. (Sebastian may or may not have “borrowed” it from the Château de Saint-Cloud, former residence of Philippe I, brother to Louis XIV.)
