do you watch micarah tewers at all? she mostly sews more modern clothes, but she has some historical inspired fashion vids (including one that’s just dunking on the little women movie fashion), and she’s EXTREMELY funny.
I have, yes! I'm not the best at keeping up with her stuff regularly, but the Little Women vid was excellent and I like her attempts to de-modernize her old house
(my one nitpick with the LW video was that, no, it's not unrealistic for Marmee to wear earrings and velvet ribbon on her dress just because the Marches are poor. they used to be rich, so those details could be things she already had before their fortunes declined- and anyway, costume jewelry has existed for a very very long time. so that explains the earrings at least, and ribbon could be saved for as a Little Indulgence if they trimmed EVERYONE'S dresses with it one winter or something)
I was also impressed with the way she comported herself after the Mount Vernon incident- did a video in a fancy 18th century dress she made, at Mount Vernon (Washington's home); got some criticism because the only fancy 18th-century white ladies who lived at that particular site were enslavers. she took the video down and immediately apologized and admitted that it was unacceptable. while that's not my apology to accept, as a white woman, so I can't say if she's Off The Hook or anything, it did strike me as much better than Certain Costubers who whined and argued when told that, say, comparing vaccine mandates to the H0locaust was not okay
I’ve been watching a lot of sewing and fashion history videos lately and I’ve realized there is 2 types of people who sew
1. The person who makes sure everything is historically correct, including the fabric, thread, pattern, and even sewing machine
(Bernadette Banner, Nicole Rudolph, etc)
And
2. The person who could not give two shit about where they got their fabric and will make elaborate dresses in a single day without ever touching a pattern
i've been watching too much micarah tewers and my mum is a seamstress so she has a ton of extra fabrics. i really wanted a nice skirt for fall and i've been trying to wear more red recently! i'll share updates, wish me luck!
I think Micarah Tewers's review comes the closest to encapsulating how I feel about the Barbie movie which—as official unofficial Internet Barbie—is very on brand and appropriate. I think the way she framed the disconnect between what she saw as the two major plot lines of the movie nailed the disconnect I was feeling while watching it, and what makes the ending feel so unsatisfying (why does Barbie feel compelled to join the real world in the end? And why do it in beige?).
Micarah’s latest video: the dialogue she went into after she made the comment about her “pathetic life” really hit home and made me cry a lil if we’re being honest because that all is exactly it.
