thinking about how important it was for julian fromme that the murder was “mutually assured destruction”, how he was so concerned that the blame would be split equally between him and paul, how he didn’t want paul to be the one to actually murder stephanek. all of this for paul. because he wanted them to be united by this crime.

and how when paul accused him of uncosciously making sure he survived no matter what, julian couldn’t speak. he “looked at him with something that could have been pity as easily as horror”, and then had a panic attack.

a wave of guilt and terror and shock started to hit him, because if he had murdered a man for paul and still paul didn't believe him, still suspected him of manipulating him, then he had killed him for nothing.

Synopsis

I read it for the first time just under a year ago and I have reread it over and over again it is so good. I relate to Paul and Julian so much it's crazy and I love how a bit over halfway through you begin to realise that Paul is worse than Julian and Julian just wants him to see how much he loves him like BRO??? god I could yap for hours about it and all the lines feel so intentional and beautiful!! I swear people who love if we were villains and especially the secret history better read this (I feel like that's obvious but I never heard of it when I first read those two books)

I just read These Violent Delights it fucked me up so bad.

Like what do you mean I'm supposed to be normal after reading that book.

What do you mean both Paul and Julian expressed my own exact feelings at different points in the book.

Also the fact that even though it's told from a 3rd person point of view it only really delves into Paul's point of view, making it so it's hard to see the truth behind Julian. It shows accurately how easy it is to misinterpret everything someone does, even if you are very close, even though the other has a truly deep understanding of you. It also does such a good job of delving into the dangers of obsession, love so hard you would kill for someone, you would do anything. Also I think some sort of sociopathic tendencies. It's just such a good book I could hardly put it down and finished it in 3 days. Also it delivered some of the hardest quotes ever it was insane.
