(If Mary hadn't been Sucked Off)
Mary: Praise be, Al'son! Your babe Mia hath lived to see another morn! T'is a miracle.
Alison: Thank you, Mary.
Alison: Even after sixteen years, that's still a relief to hear.
Mary: You be most welcome.

okay but what ar least for me explains the "sudden" switch between ep 6and the Christmas special.
Mia wasn't born. It was easy for Alison to say that they'll stay despite their financial problems and the new baby, because she had not yet lived the reality of life with a baby
But then Mia arrives and for 7 weeks it's overbearing mother in law, financial situation, new baby, sleep deprivation, ghosts being as demanding as ever but now also waking the baby and making that even harder for Alison etc
We see Alison absolutely sleep deprived and annoyed ,overwhelmed and just exhausted really.
A new baby alone without any of the other factors is hard enough on parents and they are first time parents as well.
And I think that her switch to realising that they have to leave is not that sudden.
It's just that before Mia was there she was ab bit naive about the reality of having a baby and after those weeks the realisation hit her that life with a baby just changes everything kinda. Because it just really does.
Also the ghosts, although they had great development, can't change fundamentally because they are Ghosts after all. And they address that.
and I think in the end leaving but visiting them like family was a perfect solution.

mia cooper is gonna grow up to be a historian and you can't change my mind. like.
imagine how many stories about the ghosts and their lives alison would tell her whilst she's growing up. how could little mia not be fascinated with the uncle killed in a catholic plot. the auntie who remembers when pineapples were brought over to britain. the aunt, she never got to know who experienced the witch trials first-hand. the other uncle who had beef with lord byron. she becomes a champion for the forgotten women in history who were maths geniuses. she studies homosexuality in the army during the world wars. she knows far more than the average historian about the intricacies of the daily life of cavemen.
mia is surrounded by rich history and is connected to it in a very personal way.
she comes home from school to excitedly tell alison and mike what she learned in history that day and goes back the next day with wild historical anecdotes from her mum she can't always prove are true, but her eyes are sparkling even as the teacher nods politely.
at uni, she's got a myriad of dissertation ideas and keeps changing her mind on what to write because she wants to give every era her family are from equal precedence and finds them all interesting
when she completes her PhD, she celebrates by booking into the button house hotel with her parents, and popping a bottle of champagne in a room full of ghosts she can't see, but loves and credits and thanks for her passion. along with her parents, who supported her and told her the stories they knew. and mia's especially thankful for the sheer amount of times they agreed to book stays at the hotel so mia and alison could ask the ghosts questions whilst she was studying and writing
mike taught her the bathroom mirror trick years ago. julian writes 'we are so proud of you'
mia spends her life encouraging people to look at history from the perspective of everyday individuals
mia cooper fucking loves history guys

my personal head canon is that thanks to all the stories about the ghosts her mum told her growing up, mia cooper ends up becoming a massive history nerd with a particular interest in the lives of ordinary individuals in the past. and she definitely goes to her ghost family for help with homework even though she can’t cite any of the stuff they say

alison asking mia who she’s studying for poetry in english at school
mia just stares at her and shakes her head then slowly pulls a “best of byron” book from her school bag, immediately shoving it back and covering it with papers like it’s contraband
“I’ve hidden the study papers deep in the back of my wardrobe.”
“he cannot find out about this”
“agreed.”

Wait a minute, has anyone said anything about Nancy and Mia being cousins?
Like when they’ve both grown up a bit and Nancy tells Mia about this vague memory she has of staying at Button House as a baby when she could swear this weird man without any trousers who kept doing weird hand gestures was always there, and there was a disembodied talking head too, and Mia’s just casually like “oh that’s Uncle Julian and Uncle Humphrey”

do you think after they moved out into their new place, Alison ever tries to talk to any of the ghosts because I do. She'll be cooking and call out, "Hey, Pat, can you come tell me what you think of this?" or Mike will be writing some email and she'll joke, "Better keep that away from Julian" or she'll put Mia down somewhere for a second and say, "Fanny, can you keep an eye on her for me please?"
But no one ever responds because they're not there anymore

Dad Robin owns my heart.
Dad Robin being present every time a woman in the tribe goes into labour, not knowing for certain if the kid is his or not (most likely is) but is there regardless and giddy with excitement.
Dad Robin hunting the fluffiest animals so he has lots of pelts to wrap his babies up in and carry them around as the tribe moves.
Dad Robin treating his sons and daughters the same because they haven't invented gender roles yet and he loves them equally. If daughter wants to wield spear then he teaches her, if boy wants to craft furs into clothes that also cool.
Dad Robin being the opposite of the harsh, brutal, detached cliche father people imagine cavemen to have been but instead being super soft and playful and tender with his kids like we see how he is when comforting Kitty and reassuring Pat.
Dad Robin letting his kids have one hour of TV fire watching time so long as they promise to clean their corner of the cave. He also spoils them by letting them have a sip of puddle water so long as they eat all their berries.
Dad Robin laying with his kids on the grass outside at night and naming all the shapes in the stars and telling them why Moonah is so special and why they should give thanks to Her for watching over them.
Dad Robin getting anxious the first time his eldest goes on their first hunt like the equivalent of sending your kid on their first day of school and sighing with relief when they come back alive. Drenched in blood but alive. You know, typical first day.
Dad Robin telling his kids stories through cave paintings and encouraging them to do their own and leave their hand prints, some of which still remain in secret spots on the land centuries on.
Dad Robin promising his kids some new furs before winter arrives so he goes hunting with two of his mates and come across a bear....
Dad Robin waking up and hearing his kids call for him but when he goes to follow the sound and sees them in the distance, he can't pass through the invisible wall that keeps tossing him back, over and over, all the while his kids can't see or hear him as he calls back to them.
Dad Robin looking forward to every eclipse and solstice as its when he gets to see his family come to the sacred site again, just as Pat's family would come to visit his tree, and he watches each year as his kids get older, have their own kids, before the tribe moves on and he's alone.
Dad Robin studying the face of every person who comes across the land, trying to see if he can spot any familiar signs to indicate they might be his descendant, sometimes hearing if they have his daughter's laugh or his son's smirk etc.
Dad Robin loving that babies can see him and making them laugh and cherishing what connection he has with the living that reminds him of his own kids - especially with Mia, his niece, who thanks to Alison this time won't forget him after she stops seeing him.
Uncle Robin humming the same tune to lull Mia to sleep that he used to hum to his own kids and she asks him to do it each time she visits even when she's really too old for it and shouldn't be able to hear him but somehow still can.

Mia Cooper headcannons (they don't leave AU):
She was able to see Ghosts even past the age of learning to walk, no one knows why, but they suspect it might somehow be genetic due to Alison's rare ability.
She is homeschooled all the way up until college. She uses a program that doesn't require Alison and Mike to be her teachers, and if she ever ends up needing help, she goes to the Ghosts. Thomas is a wizz with English obviously, and The Captain is her tudor for History class. Fanny helps in. . . Interesting ways, usually bossing Mia about until she gets the anwser what Fanny assumes to be correct.
One term in Mias secondary school English class, they are focusing on poems. One of the required stories they have to read is Hermione and Rodger, written by Francis Button. Mia is furious, Thomas died the day of the poems premiere, so it was just obviously another way for Francis to steal something that was rightfully his, taking the un-published poem. Thomas is absolutely devastated.
Mia sits out by the old well some nights, looking up at the sky, talking to her Auntie Mary.
Mia, growing up so remotely, doesn't have many friends. She has Kitty, of course, who is optimistic enough to understand a child under the age if ten, but its not exactly the same. One night, while up late sitting in the living room, she happens across Jemima. They hit it off, and much to the upstairs ghosts original apprehension, she becomes quite special to them all.
History is her obsession. Especially the Tudor Era royal family. When she learns that Humphreys wife (and Humphrey himself, in some way) was involved in a catholic plot to MURDER the actual queen, she nearly goes ballistic. She asks so many questions that Humphrey nearly can't keep up.
She calls Fanny 'Grandmother' and Captain 'Grandcap', but otherwise everyone else is her Aunts and Uncles.
She enjoys the Plauge Ghosts company. Despite their. . Unsettling appearance, they are very sweet and understanding, especially Nigel, who often offers her a glass of milk.

How did I not remember that Mia was born on Halloween aka official Spooky Day? That is absolutely perfect.
Given that the veil between the worlds is particularly thin on that day and Alison is her mum - what if that combination allowed Mia to be able to see ghosts too?
Personally, I love the idea of her inheriting her mum's gift and happily approaching all kinds of ghosts she meets as a kid (much to Alison's horror because this was very much not part of the plan). There's no way Alison and Mike could hide that from Mike's parents, so eventually, they tell them everything. And years later, when Mia is all grown up and the golf course has seen better days and the hotel isn't as successful as it once was, they all pitch together to buy back Button House and turn it back into a home and B&B.
