Obsidian Mace from Mexico City, Mexico dated between 1325 - 1521 on display at the Templo Mayor Museum in Mexico City, Mexico
In the Aztec's view of the world, obsidian was considered a cold and nocturnal material. The deposit sites controlled by the Aztecs were found in the Basin of Mexico, whereby the product arrived at Tenochtitlan through trade as well as through the payment of tribute.
Most pieces found at the Templo Mayor were manufactured with green obsidian from the Sierra de las Navajas, a mountainous fromation located in the current state of Hidalgo; gray obsidian stones from deposit sites located in the current states of Mexico and Pueblo, ar found in lesser proportion as well as the "Meca" obsidian with red streaks, coming from various sources.

I was in Mexico City for my first ever HEMA event, the Panoplia Iberoamericana CDMX 2024 - "Iberoamerican panoply" - the first historical medieval and renaissance martial arts convention of its kind. It included all sort of workshops, round-table conferences, demonstrations, lectures and even a concert that used the music and 16th century musical instruments of Mexico. I got to meet my online teacher, Dr. Guy Windsor (who is an absolute gem of a human being) and spent quite a while talking with him, along with Esko Ronimus (we geeked out about black metal); Pedro Velasco (he made us sing the chorus of a 1980's spanish punk song during karaoke night on the closing party), Ton Puey (a complete badass AND scholar) and Jonathan Duarte from Colombia, who has to be one of the friendliest persons on this planet that can also kick anyone's ass quite comfortably.
I am astonished. The community as a whole were just awesome people all around, none of that extreme ego / macho / supremacist or cult like behavior bullshit you often find in most martial arts environments! and I specially loved the way each and every one of our fencing instructors took the time to emphasize how fat-phobic, ageist, n00b hazing, homophobic, colonialist and, or any fascist attitudes have absolutely NO place there.

I haven’t seen anyone draw mythology in different cultural art styles. This is my attempt with different entities across the world which includes Quetzalcoatl (Aztec -> Japanese), the Wendigo (Native American -> Medieval European), and the Kirin or Qilin (Chinese -> Ancient Greek).

New Blog. Who Were the Original Native Americans?
“It would be an irony, indeed, to find that Americans ‘discovered’ Europe many centuries before Europeans ‘discovered’ America. But the whole notion of any race (European, African, or American) discovered a full-blown civilization is absurd. Such notions should now be abandoned once and for all. They presume some innate superiority in the ‘discoverer’ and something inferior and barbaric in the people ‘discovered.’ These notions run through the works even of pioneers like Wiener, Cauvet and Jeffreys. What I have sought to prove is not that Africans ‘discovered’ America, but that they made contact on at least half a dozen occasions, two of which were culturally significant for Americans.” – Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, author of They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America

Book Review: Secret of the Moon Conch (🇲🇽 Mexico)
[image 1: book cover: against a red-orange background, a young man and young woman hold a shining conch shell between them as they gaze at each other. The woman wears modern clothes, while the man wears a blue garment, with long hair partially pulled into a top ponytail; image: map showing Mexico; image 3: a mural showing the city of Tenochtitlan - from a high vantage we see a city divided by canals, with a pyramid at the center, in the foreground people go about their lives; source: Diego Rivera]
Secret of the Moon Conch
Authors: David Bowles & Guadalupe García McCall
YA World Challenge read for 🇲🇽 Mexico
Review
Her father disappeared to the US without contact years ago, her mother died of a broken heart, and now a dangerous gang member wants her as his girl. 17-year-old Sitlali has nothing left in her Veracruz hometown, just the ghost of her abuela watching over her, and she has decided to make the trek north to the border. The night before she leaves she finds a conch with inscrutable rune markings on the beach.
500 years in the past, Calitzo has lost everyone he loves to smallpox. Inside the Mexica city-state of Tenochtitlan, he trains with other teen boys in preparation to fight off the Spanish invader Cortés who holds the city under seige.
Somehow, the conch connects Sitlali and Calitzo across space and time and they each guide each other in their journeys.
I really enjoyed the immersion we got into 1500s Tenochtitlan and the juxtaposition of Mexica peoples' struggles in two different times. The connection across time allowed for the two main characters to form a unique romance based on deep understanding of each other. Though I felt like some of the traumatic things, especially in Sitlali's time, were rushed through without time to process, there is a lot going on in two different centuries, and perhaps makes sense in that Sitlali's only half-living in her own time at this point.
This is a very enjoyable historical adventure with some time-traveling and a love story mixed in, as well as a celebration of the resilience of the indigenous peoples of Mexico.

"I'VE BEEN THE ARCHER... I'VE BEEN THE PREY" 🏹

Some drawings of Meg that I did based on paintings... I at least have her whole face & eye shape figured out I think :>
Still really really struggling with fashion. I want a 3 or 4 simple but iconic looks for her. It's all a little complicated by the fact that i don't really want to adhere to the medieval standards of "cover everything if thou art woman" and also the climate this takes place in is mostly dry with like, a monsoon season where it's a little warmer.
#it's mexico okay the place they're at is mexico but if mexico was medieval okay#my art#ocs#my ocs#ocees#meganth

Steve dies and goes to Heaven, where St Peter informs him that he'll have to share apartment with someone else.
"You see, it's getting a bit crowded up here", St Peter explains.
"What kind of roommate will I get?" Steve asks.
"A gentleman from 14th century Mexico."
"Medieval Mexico?!" Steve exclaims. "But I'm from 21st century Britain! We'll have nothing in common!"
"I'm sure you'll find something to talk about if you try", says St Peter.
So Steve is shown to his heavenly home and is introduced to a shy, skinny fellow whom he's supposed to share it with.
"So what did you work as?" asks Steve.
"Peasant", says the Mexican.
"How was that?"
"Hard."
"I was a web designer."
"What's that?"
"I don't know how to explain it to you, sorry. Did you have hobbies? Mine was old cars."
"I don't understand."
Thus the conversation continues, both men struggling to keep it going, both fearing an eternity of awkwardness.
Then the Mexican asks: "How did you die?"
"Well..." Steve hesitates. "To be honest, I died because my life had become too difficult for me to handle."
"Why had it become so difficult?"
"I fell for a pyramid scheme. You see, my heart was stolen by someone who only wanted to use me."
The Mexican beams with relief. "What a coincidence!"
