I headcanon Junrinan as having characteristics similar to Nagano prefecture:

This headcanon is based on 1) having been to Nagano exactly one time and really enjoying it; 2) simply it being "west of the big city" lol; 3) Subaru country <3; and 4) it having characteristics that seem to coincide with Hitsugaya and Hinamori's names. (One day I'll write about the shinshu ghost apples of Junrinan, but alas, not today.)

For the purposes of my current fic, I've expanded my Junrinan headcanon to include information about how I think the districts in Rukongai are arranged. I don't think the districts tend to be that evenly sized or populated, and I feel like the closer ones might be bigger just because there's less going on as far as Gotei business goes--then they get smaller as the conditions get dicier, but then probably start getting bigger again as you get further out, because the Gotei stops giving a shit at a certain point and it's just like "yeah okay that's all... the Northwest Territories... sure, whatever."

Since there's a lot of forest and mountain in my Junrinan, I felt like it would make sense if the rest of West Rukongai was not BEYOND all that forest and mountain--rather, in that direction lies ether (and the sea, naturally). And the other districts of West Rukongai actually sit below Junrinan (West 3, Hokutan, also needs to have some of this mountain range, as it houses Mt. Koifushi. So I suppose in the below image it'd be Wisconsin or something).

In my mind, Junrinan is kind of like Ontario:

--Except instead of Manitoba, there's ocean.

When shinigami think about "Junrinan", they're thinking about like, the Toronto metro area. But in actuality, there's a fuckton of Other Junrinan that extends way out. Meanwhile, the rest of West Rukongai is like the United States below it, making some districts of West a lot closer to districts in South than they are to other districts in West.

The map above wouldn't be to scale; I think Junrinan is a lot smaller than Ontario, and that the other districts are also all smaller than most U.S. states. Were this to scale the Seireitei would probably be in like Charleston, SC--but my point is it's not to scale. My point is, Junrinan has Ontario energy!!!

New report quantifies the size and ubiquity of the U.S. home appraisal gap

The “appraisal gap” – the tendency for homes in white neighborhoods to be given higher values than equivalent homes in minority neighborhoods – has attracted media attention in recent years. A new report led by UIC’s Junia Howell, visiting assistant professor in sociology, calculates the width of those disparities in cities across the United States, finding it present in all corners of the country and widening dramatically in recent years.

The research was featured in a graphics-heavy piece by Bloomberg City Lab, which highlighted that the gap was present in each of the top 30 metro areas. In the most expensive regions, such as Southern California and New York City, the gap exceeded $1 million between White and Black neighborhoods. In less expensive areas, such as Charleston, SC and San Antonio, TX, the absolute dollar difference was smaller, but the relative disparity was even higher. The study also found that diverse areas have higher appraisal inequity. 

That’s despite the fact that the demand for diverse neighborhoods is high among people of color, Howell said. This tension affirms that unequal appraisals are not simply the result of supply and demand, Howell says, but instead reinforce racial hierarchies and assumptions that affect how appraisers assess comparable sales.

Hurricane Francine tears through Louisiana, unleashing powerful winds and torrential rains, leaving 400,000 without power.

New Orleans recorded wind gusts of 78 and 76 mph as Hurricane Francine's eyewall swept through the city on Wednesday evening. Dulac reported a gust of 97 mph, while Eugene Island experienced a gust of 105 mph. Although Francine has since weakened to a tropical storm, its impacts are expected to continue through the end of the week.

Hurricane Francine struck the Louisiana coast on Wednesday, unleashing destructive 100 mph winds and a dangerous storm surge that left hundreds of thousands without power across the Southeast. The storm dumped several inches of rain, triggering a rare Flash Flood Emergency.

Francine's eye made landfall at 5 p.m. CT in Terrebonne Parish, bringing hurricane-force gusts to the southern part of the state, including areas near Baton Rouge.

Though Francine has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, its dangerous and potentially life-threatening effects are expected to persist well inland.

Power outages continued to rise throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning, with nearly 400,000 outages reported in Louisiana and about 17,000 in Mississippi, according to poweroutage.us.

A Flash Flood Emergency was declared for parts of the New Orleans metro area, where 0.50 inches of rain fell in just 9 minutes and 4.5 inches accumulated within three hours. Life-threatening flooding remained a concern as rain persisted.

As water levels rose, emergency services began receiving calls for help from individuals trapped with no means of escape.

According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre, more than two dozen people, including young children, required rescue from the flooding.

The sheriff's office reported that deputies responded to calls from residents trapped in housing units in Thibodaux due to rising floodwaters from the heavy rain.

All residents were safely evacuated, with most being taken to emergency shelters.

Additionally, Francine's conditions posed a risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, with these threats expected to continue into Friday morning.

Francine disrupts travel in New Orleans as emergency responders remain on standby.

Travel in the region has been significantly affected, with airlines canceling flights to and from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport through Thursday morning. Some parishes, including Cameron Parish, which experienced flooding before landfall, have imposed mandatory curfews from Wednesday afternoon until sunrise on Thursday.

In response to Francine's impact, President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Louisiana.

"After declaring a state of emergency, it has become clear that the severity of this storm exceeds the capabilities of state and local governments to effectively respond," said Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. "Federal assistance is crucial to save lives and protect property."

Where is Francine headed next?

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Francine is projected to gradually turn north, moving its center across southeastern Louisiana and southwestern and central Mississippi on Thursday.

While the center of the storm is expected to track well inland, its effects could extend hundreds of miles outward.

Weather alerts, including wind advisories, Flood Watches, and other hazardous weather warnings, have been issued as far north as southern Missouri and as far east as Tennessee as the remnants of the cyclone move through the South.

Since 2000, Francine marks the eighth hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana. FOX Weather Correspondent Robert Ray has reported on most of these landfalls.

“These people are tough as nails,” Ray remarked from Houma, Louisiana, on Wednesday.

Francine, which became a hurricane on September 10, arrived at the peak of the 2024 hurricane season when named storms are most likely to impact the Atlantic Basin. As Francine moves north and eventually dissipates, the NHC is also monitoring several other systems in the Atlantic.

Francine was the third hurricane to make landfall in the continental U.S. during the 2024 season. Hurricane Beryl struck Matagorda, Texas, on July 8 as a Category 1 storm. Approximately a month later, Hurricane Debby intensified into a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida, on August 5.

Steven Lee Morris, age 72, died August 13, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center following a short illness. He was born August 23, 1950, in Bethesda, Maryland to Ray and Violet Boehm Morris. He married Linda M. Shultz on July 8, 1978, in Hutchinson.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Morris, brothers-in-law Don Meier and Ed Shultz, brother- and sister-in-law Bruce and Janice Shultz, and infant son Samuel Andrew Morris.

Steve is survived by his wife Linda and former foster daughter, Briana Gamblain-Weber, of the home. He is also survived by his brothers James (Jimmy) of Washington, D.C., and David (Dave). Other survivors include sister-in-law Wanda Morris Blevins of Culpeper, VA, sisters-in-law Theda Shultz and Marilyn Meier of Arlington, brother- and sister-in-law Ray and Evelyn Shultz of Randolph, KS, numerous nephews and nieces, cats Frankie and Pepper and his special companion, "nurse cat" Snowflake.

After graduation from Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, VA, Steve began working for Dart Drug (81 stores in the metro D.C. area). A co-worker invited him to attend Marumsco Baptist Church, and Steve heard the Gospel for the first time: that Jesus Christ took our sin debt to the cross and paid the penalty of death, that He was buried, and that He arose after three days! Steve heard that he must be born again (John 3:7) by personally asking the Lord to forgive and save him. Steve had completed Confirmation classes, but realized that the waters of baptism can never cleanse the heart; only the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ can wash away sin. Steve gladly received Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved," Romans 10:13. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost" Titus 3:5.

Steve had a natural talent for drawing and Pastor Alec Bledsoe encouraged him to study art at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. Steve attended for two years. It was there that he met and fell in love with his wife Linda. After their marriage, the Morris's lived in Woodbridge for a year and Steve continued to work for Dart Drug.

Steve and Linda moved to Kansas in 1979, and Steve worked for Collins Bus as a wheelchair lift assembler, Walmart as a layaway associate, and Durham School Services as a bus driver. Steve was an enthusiastic league bowler with a 220 average. Steve enjoyed watching football on TV. It didn't matter to him who was playing, as long as the game was competitive. After retirement, Steve wrote and self-published (Amazon) two novels: Memories and Bad Men United – Déjà vu.

In the spring of 2002, Steve and Linda attended a revival service at Riverside Baptist Church, and Steve rededicated his life to the Lord. On May 12, 2002, Steve and Linda transferred their church membership to Riverside Baptist. Steve was later elected as Deacon. He also began representing the church in nursing home chapels. At one time, Steve preached in five different facilities. Steve encouraged the church to buy a bus with a wheelchair lift so he could pick up residents for the Sunday evening service. Because the residents had to miss supper to go to church, Steve would always stop at a fast-food restaurant and treat them to a meal before taking them back to the facility.

Steve's health began to decline following a bout with sepsis in 2021. Then in January 2022 he fell in the home and after spending almost a month in a hospital in Wichita, remained bedfast. Steve's hospital bed in the dining nook became the control central of the home. Using his laptop computer, he continued to create bulletins and word search puzzles for the nursing home ministry. He managed the family finances and ordered hard-to-find supplies online. Steve was Linda's go-to tech when she encountered problems with the desk computer, printer, or Wi-Fi router, and he was the one who reminded her to install computer updates. Needless to say, he also retained control of the TV remote.

Every evening at 9:30 Steve would ask Linda and Bri to come to family altar time. They took turns choosing a song to sing, and then they read a chapter in the Bible and prayed together. Steve loved his pastor Richard Haley dearly, along with church family. He very much appreciated their prayers, love, and support. We rejoice with Steve in his new home, complete with healthy body and sin-free mind.

The family thanks Enhabit Home Health and Enhabit Hospice for their wonderful care of Steve during the last year. What a blessing the Enhabit therapists, nurses, and other staff brought to our home! The family also thanks the staff of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for the compassionate care that Steve and they received during the last week of his earthly life.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 25, 2023, at Riverside Baptist Church, 1100 W. 21st Ave, Hutchinson, KS, with Pastor Richard Haley officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS. Memorials may be given to the Riverside Baptist Church- Academy Fund and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.

The band was formed by SM Entertainment in 2011 and debuted on April 8th, 2012. Their music - released and performed in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese - primarily incorporates pop, hip-hop, and R&B, including elements of electronic dance music genres such as house and trap. As of May 8th, 2021 EXO had exceeded 17,500,000 total combined album sales (group, solo, sub-unit) according to the Gaon music chart, making them one of the best-selling music groups of the century. 

EXO have been described as "the biggest boy band in the world.” They have also been labelled "Kings of K-Pop" by international outlets including Vogue, Metro, PageOne and South Korean outlets such as OBS, as well as "Nation's pick" and "Global pick" by South Korean media, especially following their performance at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. 

They are considered a prominent force in the Hallyu Wave, which refers to the rise and spread of Korean pop culture around the world. In April 2018, Forbes described EXO as one of the two artists worldwide (alongside fellow K-pop band BTS) that dominate social media, even exceeding the reach of American artists such as Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, with mentions on Twitter in the millions.

Originally debuted as two separate halves of the group - EXO-K for Korean activities and EXO-M for activities in China (in Mandarin) - they combined into a singular EXO for the release of their third EP Overdose in 2014, following the departure of EXO-M members Kris, Luhan, and Tao. These three artists’ lawsuits to leave their contracts stated that SM Entertainment, “disregarded [their] health; maintained unfair profit distributions; restricted [their] freedom; and treated [them] like a product rather than a person.” I will refrain from adding my personal thoughts on the matter (but know I’m yelling it internally 🙂)

On June 13, 2017, SM Entertainment announced Lay would not be participating in activities for the group's upcoming album due to conflicting schedules with his solo activities (also due to political tensions between China and South Korea during this time). Lay did not return to active participation in EXO until 2021 with Don’t Fight The Feeling, although he contributed vocals to the Chinese version of their song "Tempo" in 2018. While Lay’s contract with SM has ended after 10 years, on April 8th, 2022, he is still an active member of EXO and will continue to be part of any group activities in the future.

Three of the members have completed their mandatory military service, three are currently active, and two have yet to enlist (Lay, as a Chinese citizen, is exempt). We anticipate the group’s complete reunion eagerly in the next few years. Thank you for supporting EXO 💕

James D. (Jim) Edwards, Jr., former top executive with Arthur Andersen & Co. and influential Atlanta civic leader, died July 15, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 79.

A loving husband and father, Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon Bordelon Edwards, son David Lee Edwards of Charlotte, NC, sister Carolyn Edwards Smith (Larry) of Greenville, SC, two grandchildren, Mary Zipporah Edwards of Charlotte, NC, and David Basile Edwards of Washington, DC, nephew, Ryan Smith of Greenville, SC, and nieces Nicole Ferris of Jupiter, FL, and Erin Adams of Tallahassee, FL.

Jim was the son of Dr. James D. Edwards and Elizabeth Reynolds Edwards, and was born in Cleveland, TN, on November 4, 1943, and raised in Greenville, SC. He graduated first in his senior class from Bob Jones Academy, where he was elected senior class president and president of the student body. He graduated with a degree in Accounting, with honors, from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.

Jim spent his entire professional career with the public accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Co. He was hired as a staff accountant in 1964 and began a stellar rise that would lead to the No. 3 position in an organization with more than 85,000 employees operating in 84 countries. Before he reached the age of 30, he was admitted to partnership in 1973, making him the youngest ever to achieve this level. In 1979, he became the Managing Partner of the Atlanta office and ushered in an era of unprecedented growth. During his tenure, the office prospered and expanded from less than 400 to more than 900 professional employees. Arthur Andersen, as the largest such firm in Atlanta, grew to nearly twice the size of their closest competitors, and were auditors of over 40% of the top 50 public companies in Georgia. In 1987, when he was 44 years old, Jim became responsible for managing North American operations comprising 85 offices and 20,000 employees, and was elevated to Arthur Andersen's Executive Committee. In 1989, he became Managing Partner for North and South America. Until his retirement in 2002, he served as Managing Partner for Global Markets.

Jim was generous in devoting time and resources to numerous civic and charitable organizations in the city he loved - Atlanta, Georgia. His service included terms as Board member or Chairman of numerous nonprofit organizations, including Central Atlanta Progress, Metropolitan United Way, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Metro Atlanta Salvation Army, Atlanta Junior Achievement, National Junior Achievement, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Cousins Family Foundation.

At the conclusion of his career with Arthur Andersen, Jim served on the Board of Directors of various publicly traded companies, including IMS Health, Inc., Crawford & Company, Cousins Properties, Inc., Huron Consulting Group, and Transcend Services, Inc.

Jim enjoyed competing in tennis and was the perennial champion of the Atlanta Country Club members' tournament. Golf was another favorite pastime, with annual trips to Scotland to play the old courses, and frequent rounds played with his wife at their home courses on Spring Island, SC, and Placida, FL. When he turned 50, he celebrated by making a coast-to-coast motorcycle trip from the Statue of Liberty in New York City to the Santa Monica pier in California. In later years, he enjoyed hiking in Colorado and spent many summer months there.

Jim was a man of rare qualities, capabilities, and interests. His life exemplified success achieved through dedication, integrity, and hard work. His professional accomplishments, outstanding character and sterling personal conduct inspired and impressed his employees, peers, business associates, and virtually everyone who came to know him. He made immense and lasting contributions to his employer, community, family and those who were fortunate to be his friend. In his passing, the world lost a true leader and a man of accomplishments; one who lived a principled life, faithfully followed Christ, and rejoiced in helping others.

A memorial service will be held at the Saint Mark United Methodist Church of Atlanta at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in memory of James D. Jeremy Alumbaugh, St Louis FC GM (USL PRO)

This morning a press release from Saint Louis FC (STLFC) and a news article in Chattanooga announced that Jeremy Alumbaugh, VP and General Manager for STLFC was leaving to join Chattanooga FC, a supporters-owned club in Tennessee. His title is Managing Director. While responsibilities aren’t defined in the Club’s announcement of the hire, a story on the search from September in the Chattanooga Times Free Press outlined these priorities

Facility development is important to CFC, whose foundation submitted a bid to the city last week to build multi-sport facilities on the land in front of Sculpture Fields. Engaging its supporter-owners is also key, according to Grizzle, along with the team winning a professional championship to provide buzz for the city and the club’s first league title.

The Supporter-Owners note is an important part of this. More than 3,200 investors raised $872,750 for the club earlier this year, including a number of Louligan’s as the club, in operation since 2009, faced a difficult situation after the organization’s former general manager, Sean McDaniel, left the club and eventually joined rival club the Chattanooga Red Wolves Soccer Club in July 2018. It’s led to an understandably acrimonious relationship as the Times Free Press documented in January.

Chattanooga FC has since announced it would make the leap to professional soccer in 2020 and join the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA). NISA is level three of professional soccer, which is the same tier as the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC team that plays in USL League One. The team also began the Chattanooga FC Academy in 2012, uniting select soccer clubs in Chattanooga and added the Chattanooga FC Women in 2013, competing in the WPSL (like Fire & Ice and St. Louis Lions locally). It appears Jeremy will be focused on the NISA squad as the Search Story noted a soccer professional wasn’t necessarily needed although Jeremy’s experience with Springfield SC, Chicago Magic and Metro United/SLSG Illinois as well as the Chicago Fire PDL are all part of what he brings to the community development Chattanooga FC are looking for.

“We need someone who understands entertainment, attractions and sports. We don’t think it necessarily has to be a soccer person. Someone who understands how the professional landscape of sports works can really take this club up another notch.”

Prior to his Club experience, he worked as an assistant at both Missouri State in the late 90’s where he worked with Matt Pickens, and he assisted Kevin Kalish at SIUE for two years on his arrival here in Collinsville. Most of you know him for his role with STLFC which began with the formation of the team in 2015 as he and I discussed here.

The reason for this litany of Jeremy’s career is two-fold. One, it points to the steps he has taken to develop himself beyond the pitch, for the business side. His move to Metro United, as he indicated to me, was for the opportunity to become involved in the professional game which SLSG was actively exploring at that point already. His ambitions required the move.

That leads to the second point. As a key executive within the STLFC organization, he has chosen to not stay in St. Louis for the arrival of Major League Soccer with #MLS4TheLou. Why would someone with his experience, both inside the organization and in the larger community, make that decision?
