This is a BIG DEAL.
Cement production is one of the biggest sources of CO2 emissions that doesn't directly involve burning fossil fuels. Sure, making cement uses a lot of energy, but theoretically that energy could come from renewable sources that don't emit CO2. Even if it did though, the process of making cement basically involves baking limestone until CO2 and water are driven out of it, creating a substance called "clinker" that is ground down into cement powder. So, making new cement from limestone always emits a lot of CO2, no matter what energy source you use.
This research basically showed that you can use old crushed up concrete waste in place of the flux that is usually used in smelting/recycling steel. Flux creates a glassy slag on top of the molten steel that captures impurities and protects the metal from oxygen while its molten hot. Using concrete as flux basically re-bakes the concrete back into clinker, which can then be used to create more cement and new concrete, while not producing any new CO2 emissions because you're basically baking the CO2 that reacted with the cement to make concrete back out of it. Its like how burning wood doesn't increase the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, because the carbon in the tree originally came from the air. Its only digging fossilized carbon out of the ground and adding it into the air that's the problem.
This is a huge step towards decarbonizing our building materials, and it doesn't involve any fancy new technologies, or speculative processes. This could be done today in steel mills that currently exist, they'd just have to switch flux sources and start saving the slag.
What a brilliant piece of industrial research!

It should never be forgotten that energy is the one and only fundamental physical resource. With energy, all material things are possible. Without it, none are.
Sir Alan Cottrell FRS, Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, and sometime chief scientific adviser to HM Government, speaking at the opening of the “Atoms for Energy” exhibition in Birmingham, 1981 November. Sir Alan went on to say :
Here in Birmingham at the centre of a great industrial area huge amounts of iron, aluminium, glass, copper and other materials are worked up daily into all kinds of manufactured goods. What happens in these processes? The atoms themselves are not changed. Just as many iron, aluminium, copper and other atoms come out of a factory as go in. All that we do is move them about, mix them up and sort them out into various patterns and shapes. And the one thing that is absolutely essential for doing all this, and which is used up in the process, is the high quality energy that comes out of electricity lines, gas pipes, and coal and oil bunkers. Given enough energy, as well as the time and scientific and industrial skills to use it effectively, we can extract all our required minerals and turn them into metals and manufactured goods ; we can turn oil and gas into plastics, purify water, recycle scrap metals, and even turn carbon compounds into protein foods. High quality energy is truly the lifeblood of modern society.

Princess Beatrice enchants in tailored dress from the Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe
The royal ladies are unexpected style twins
The 33-year-old royal looked enchanting in an elegant Self-Portrait midi dress to attend the 2022 Annual Summit dinner at Mansion House on Friday. The poignant event brought together 20:40 members and senior leaders, of which Princess Beatrice was a speaker.
Photographs shared by guests on Instagram picture Princess Beatrice donning the tailored piece, which features a fitted bouclé jacket with a waist-cinching belt, and a lace-trimmed pleated chiffon skirt.
The royal's effortlessly elegant fit sparked a fashion frenzy online, who quickly matched Princess Beatrice's dress to one in the Duchess of Cambridge's archive.
Kate memorably wore the iconic Self-Portrait ensemble at the reception for Hold Still, and again at the Queen's Platinum Party at the Palace last month - a timeless piece in her wardrobe.
Quick to react to Princess Beatrice's eveningwear aesthetic, one fan wrote: "I wonder if Catherine allowed Beatrice to borrow this outfit!! Love the recycling options."
"I loved it since I first saw it on Kate," shared a second fan, while another penned: "I don’t know what happened to the Princess and the Duchess but they are literally GLOWING lately! Loving them both."
It wouldn't be unlikely if the Duchess of Cambridge lent Princess Beatrice her dress, given their close relationship and similar royal style.
Both royals are also keen advocates of recycling fashion, having re-worn many an outfit and statement accessory through the years.
The statement Self-Portrait tailored midi-dress retails for £420. The head-turning fit is the ultimate understated style statement, featuring peak lapels, structured shoulders, all-over metallic tweed texture and satin trim..
With two of the royal family's most fashionable ladies having worn the dress, most sizes have understandably sold out. But you can shop a select number of sizes from Selfridges.

The Awards Season Fashion Edit: BAFTAs 2020
For the past half a decade or so, the highlight of my calendar hasn’t been the long stream of Fashion Weeks, it’s not been Christmas, nor is my birthday even the top of my absolutely the best time of year list, it’s been, and still is, Awards Season.
The time of year where the red carpets are more televised than the awards shows, when everybody who is anybody is asked, “Who are you wearing?, and not “Who do you want to see winning in X category?”, the fashion is almost as important as the accolades and celebration of film, television and music across the globe.
However, this year’s BAFTA’s have left me with a somewhat dimmed glee as the list of attendees walked the length of the red carpet, past the seemingly tame press pit and up the steps leading towards the Royal Albert Hall. The looks last Sunday were somewhat safe and less thrilling than what was seen Stateside at the SAG Awards or the Golden Globes just a few weeks ago, but perhaps everyone is opting to dazzle and impress the larger crowds of the Oscars in LA this Sunday. With that being said, I’m definitely not down-playing some of the stunning fashion highlights of the most prestigious British Film Awards, it’d be a crime for me to say that I wasn’t impressed by some major players in the fashion stakes and talk about some of my favourite styling ensembles (can we give a major cheer for the different shade of pinks we were blessed with?), whilst brushing over some of those… less so.
The ultimate favourites of mine, in no particular order, have to be;
Scarlett Johansson in that stunning deep pearlised pink, highly embellished and feathery Versace gown that literally made my jaw hit the floor the moment I clocked eyes on the double nominated actress.
Daisy Ridley, at first I thought she’d opted for a black, half-sheer gown, until I saw more photos and realised that it was in fact a deep teal shade that well and truly won me over. She look utterly and effortlessly beautiful with the form fitting custom made Oscar de la Renta dress complete with the sheer cape. Obsessed.
The Duchess of Cambridge always looks impeccable when she walks the length of the BAFTAs carpet (I nearly cried from the spectator pit when she walked past me in that forest-green number at the 2018 BAFTAs), but her ‘recycled’ gold and cream Alexander McQueen gown from a number of years ago looks just as incredible now as it did back in 2012.
Other favourites included Zoë Kravitz in a stunningly simple long-sleeved, gold, floor-length YSL number, Naomie Harris’ metallic silver sequinned Michael Kors gown that leads the procession of reimagined and current twenties styles and Laura Dern’s hot pink dress that gave her a youthful beauty on the red carpet. That’s not to mention Olivia Colman in her traditional awards style black embellished and sheer sleeved gown that is now synonymous with the BAFTA and Oscar winner, Charlize Theron dazzling in a plunging, pleated chiffon, bold purple Dior dress and Emilia Clarke’s again re-imagined black sparkly, twenties style slim-strapped, scoop-necked Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown.
Renée Zellweger was the first best dressed attendee that I fell head over heels for (and my overall favourite from the night!), that cotton-candy Prada gown softened her up beautifully and she couldn’t help but look elegant as she stepped onto the stage to accept her Best Actress award. There was something so youthful and understated about her complete look that still mesmerises me.
My controversial pick of the night has to be Florence Pugh. I’ve been hopelessly obsessed with her for the past year, so seeing her shine during awards season has been the best of the best for me. But when she stepped on the red carpet I was unsure, the colour made me give the instant thumbs up, but the rest made me unsure for a solid thirty minutes. The more pictures I saw circulating Twitter the more I leaned towards I actually really love this, however almost a week later I’m still edging on slightly unsure. I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and keeping both thumbs up though.
And not to forget the men, my top looks were from John Boyega, Andrew Scott and Jack Lowden.
The more I talk about the BAFTAs, the more I hope (and pray and beg) that one day I’ll be invited and not having to spend time entering the ballots or running for wristbands just to be in the audience pits on the red carpet (not that I’m complaining!). Now time to be excited for the Oscars styles.

Such is quite a great investment, so picking the one which will take probably the most advantage that's definitely worth the money you purchased it for is usually best. Among the many choices for patio furnishing, wood, iron, steel and plastics remain to be one of the most popular through the years. Sure wood, steel and iron makes appealing options. However, they could possess a lots of downsides too. Outdoor furnishing is consistently exposed to a lots of weather change, constant exposure to heat and rain may degrade the standard of wooden chairs. Oftentimes, if not probably the most durable materials are widely-used, the risk for breakage is always there. More so, its being expensive makes this approach quite unattractive. Steel and iron, almost in competing in price with wood, is not a suitable choice when placed outdoors since the rain as well as other climate factors could easily cause rusts in order to create.
Wooden Furniture is the most accepted type of furniture mainly because it blends within the surrounding and imparts it a natural, cozy and synchronized feel. Tables, chairs, swings, lawn bridges, rocking chairs etc all belong to Outdoor Wooden Furniture. Cambridge solar reactor transforms plastic waste and CO2 into raw materials of choice
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a solar-powered reactor that can recycle two types of waste streams into green fuel and chemicals. By varying the catalysts, the end product can be tailor-made.
Converting greenhouse gas[1] and plastic waste[2] into new raw materials using solar energy is nothing new. What is special about this new technology from a British team is that it combines these twoprocesses. As a result, one reactor can make different recycled products for different industries, from cosmetics to fuel.
Successful solar test
The researchers have successfully conducted several tests with the solar-powered reactor. CO2 and plastic drinking bottles have been converted into glycolic acid[3], which is widely used in cosmetics, and syngas[4], a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas that can be further processed into fuel, respectively.
The technology, powered solely by solar energy, is a case of 'two birds with one stone': it tackles the problems of plastic pollution and greenhouse gases while preventing the extraction of new, scarce raw materials.
Final product of choice
The waste materials that go into the reactor can be 'recycled' into various end products thanks to a special built-in system. The research team tested different catalysts and saw the end product change.
According to the study's lead author Subhajit Bhattacharjee, the experiments show great promise for the machine's potential. “The versatility of the system is exceptional. We're making fairly simple carbon-based molecules now, but in the future we could tune the system to make much more complex products. Simply by changing the catalyst."
It is a step towards the circular economy. In the study[5], the researchers state that the technology lays the foundation for large, fully solar-powered recycling plants. To do this, the technology must be competitive and scalable, and we are not there yet. The European Research Council (ERC)[6] will invest in the next phase of development to create “more complex products”. The time horizon for this is five years.
Reactor with an view to the future
The reactor has two integrated spaces for plastic and greenhouse gases. The light absorber in the reactor works on perovskite[7] solar cells. That mineral is a lot cheaper and easier to find in nature than high-quality silicon – the more common choice for generating solar energy.
The machine is very efficient, according to the research. This is not entirely unique to the technology. Last year, researchers at Stanford University also developed a catalyst[8] that could convert CO2 into fuel a thousand times more efficiently than is average for CO2 conversion.

NASA has developed a new technology that can convert the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (C02) into fuel by using solar-powered, thin-film devices. Metal oxide thin films are fabricated to produce a photoelectrochemical cell that is powered by solar energy. By converting CO2 to fuel before it is emitted to the atmosphere this technology can mitigate the effects of the burning of fossil fuels, the worlds major fuel source for the foreseeable future This new nanomaterial thin-film device provides a low cost, facile fabrication pathway to commercialize the technology in the sustainable energy market. More importantly, it results in a zero carbon footprint by recycling C02 to fuels that are compatible with all existing fuel utilities. This is accomplished by using solar power to convert the C02 into a useable fuel in a very compact device.

Plastic products are used almost in all our daily life activities due to their characteristics such as being inert, durability, flexibility, and versatility. More than 1 million tons of plastic wastes are generated daily in Ethiopia. Unless managed it properly plastic waste affects the environment immensely since they are durable and stable. Plastic wastes stay in the environment for a long time. In this paper, a solar-assisted pyrolysis system has been designed and tested for the generation of liquid fuel from High-Density Polyethylene plastic waste. Data were collected related to the solar energy potential of Addis Ababa city of Ethiopia and the amount of plastic waste generated daily. Proximate and ultimate analysis and heating value of waste were determined experimentally. The energy requirements of the pyrolysis system were determined and the sizing of the system was performed. The model is simulated using Matlab software and a mathematical model is applied to study the performance of the system. A 4 m diameter solar parabolic dish collector with a cylindrical-shaped reactor at the focal point and dual solar tracking system is used based on Addis Ababa weather data and the required energy for the endothermic pyrolysis. Based on the result, the conversion efficiency of the system is 72% by weight. The result also shows 1360 Kwh/m2 of solar energy is required to produce 14.2 liters of liquid fuel from High-Density Polyethylene plastic waste. The heating value of the produced liquid fuel is 41.8 MJ/kg. Thus, by using a solar-assisted pyrolysis system a liquid fuel has been produced from plastic waste, income is generated from the selling of the produced liquid fuel, and the environmental impact of waste plastic is reduced.
[3] Glycolic acid is one of the most commonly used ingredients in exfoliating products and is loved by dermatologists. Glycolic acid is a form of AHA, also known as an alpha hydroxy acid. Derived from plant sugars, it is also called "fruit acid" and is one of the most effective chemical exfoliants you can use to achieve a healthy complexion. Due to its extremely small molecular structure, it can easily penetrate the upper layers of the skin, better than other AHA acids. Here we introduce a versatile photoelectrochemical platform for CO2 conversion that is coupled to the reforming of plastic. The perovskitebased photocathode enables the integration of different CO2-reduction catalysts such as a molecular cobalt porphyrin, a Cu91In9 alloy and formate dehydrogenase enzyme, which produce CO, syngas and formate, respectively. The Cu27Pd73 alloy anode selectively reforms polyethylene terephthalate plastics into glycolate in alkaline solution. The overall singlelight-absorber photoelectrochemical system operates with the help of an internal chemical bias and under zero applied voltage. The system performs similarly to bias-free, dual-light absorber tandems and shows about 10‒100fold higher production rates than those of photocatalytic suspension processes. This finding demonstrates efficient photoelectrochemical CO2to-fuel production coupled to plastic-to-chemical conversion as a promising and sustainable technology powered by sunlight.

How do you make glitter more sustainable?
We all know that glitter craft is pretty, but what you might not know is that it can also be pretty harmful to the environment. Have you ever wondered how to make glitter more sustainable? If so, you're not alone. A lot of people are asking that question lately, and for good reason.
Glitter is pretty, but it's also pretty wasteful. It's made from tiny pieces of metal or plastic, and most of it ends up in the trash after just a single use. That's not very sustainable, is it?
But there is a way to make glitter more sustainable. In this article, we'll show you how. In this article, we're going to explore how you can make your glitter more sustainable. We'll look at some of the environmental impacts of glitter, and we'll suggest some ways that you can reduce these impacts.
There's no doubt that glitter is popular - it's often used in cosmetics, arts and crafts, and even as a party decoration. However, because of its non-biodegradable nature, glitter is often considered a sustainability nightmare. So how can we make glitter more sustainable? Read on to find out.
How do you make something as frivolous as glitter more sustainable?
That was the question on the minds of scientists at the University of Cambridge when they set out to create a biodegradable glitter.
The result of their efforts is a type of glitter craft made from plant cellulose that breaks down within six months in soil and water.
While the new glitter isn’t perfect – it doesn’t look quite as sparkly as traditional glitter – it is a major step forward in making our use of glitter more sustainable.
In this article, we’ll take a look at how this new biodegradable glitter is made and what its advantages are over traditional glitter. In the world of cosmetics, there is a never-ending demand for new, innovative products. And of course, one of the most popular trends in the industry is glitter. But all that sparkle comes at a cost: it's often made from non-renewable materials that are bad for the environment.
So how can we make glitter more sustainable? In this article, we'll explore some of the options available and discuss the pros and cons of each.
Making Glitter More Sustainable
There are several ways to make glitter more sustainable, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most popular methods include:
1. Recycled Plastic: This is probably the most common method of making glitter more sustainable, as it's relatively easy and affordable. However, recycled plastic can still be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.
As the world becomes more and more environmentally conscious, people are looking for ways to make their everyday activities more sustainable. One way that many people are trying to make their lives more sustainable is by using less glitter.
Glitter is a popular craft supply, but it can be difficult to find glitter that is both beautiful and sustainable. In this article, we will explore how to make glitter more sustainable.
The first step to making glitter more sustainable is to use recycled materials. You can use recycled paper, plastic, or metal to create your glitter.
The second step to making glitter more sustainable is to use less toxic materials. Many glitters contain toxic metals, such as arsenic, lead, and cadmium. You can avoid these metals by using eco-friendly glitters made from plant-based materials.
Is there glitter environmentally friendly?
There’s a lot of debate surrounding the environmental effects of glitter. Some say it’s eco-friendly, while others believe the opposite. So, what’s the truth?
Is Glitter Eco-Friendly?
The short answer is: no, glitter is not eco-friendly. In fact, it’s quite harmful to the environment. Here’s why:
1. Glitter is made up of tiny pieces of plastic.
2. When these pieces of plastic end up in the ocean, they’re ingested by marine life.
3. This can fatally clog up the stomachs of fish, turtles, and other sea creatures.
4. Glitter can also pollute water supplies and damage ecosystems.
There's a lot of debate surrounding the topic of glitter these days. Some say it's environmentally friendly, while others argue that it's not. So, what's the truth? Is glitter bad for the environment? In this article, we'll explore the pros and cons of glitter and discuss whether or not it's truly eco-friendly.
In this article, we're going to answer the question: Is there such a thing as environmentally friendly glitter?
The short answer is: No. But there are biodegradable glitters available on the market.
As you might know, conventional glitter is made up of tiny pieces of plastic. When these little pieces end up in the environment, they can be harmful to marine life and other ecosystems. This is why some people have started calling for a ban on glitter, and why some companies have started making biodegradable glitter.
So, is there such a thing as environmentally friendly glitter? The answer is no, but there are biodegradable glitters available on the market. Let's take a closer look at both types of glitter and their environmental impacts.
What can we use instead of glitter?
There's been a lot of discussion lately about using alternatives to glitter, as it turns out the tiny pieces of plastic are pretty bad for the environment. So what can we use instead? Here are some ideas:
1. Confetti
Confetti is a great alternative to glitter, as it's festive and fun, and it comes in a variety of sizes and colors. You can buy confetti at most party stores, or you can make your own by cutting up colorful paper into small pieces.
2. Sequins
Sequins are another great alternative to glitter, as they add a bit of glamour and shine to any project. Like confetti, sequins come in a variety of sizes and colors, so you can find the perfect ones for your project.
There's been a lot of talk lately about how harmful glitter is to the environment. As we all know, glitter is a big no-no when it comes to being environmentally friendly. But what can we use instead? In this blog post, we'll explore some of the options available to us.
There are several ways to add a touch of sparkle without using glitter. Sequins, for example, are a great alternative. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, and can be attached with glue or sew on. Feathers are another option - they add a bit of glamour without being too over the top.
Beads are also a popular choice, and can be used to create a wide variety of looks. They're available in a variety of colors and styles, and can be easily attached with hot glue or thread. Finally, you could use fake gems.
