Advent Calendar: Day 1
@mynameisanakin
“Wintah Solstice or Yule is da Longest Night, da peak of power of darkness ovah da ‘aina. It also da turnin’ point, aftah which da nights grow shortah, days get longer as light is reborn into da world. Amongst da Verbena, it is seen as a child, newly born in da underworld from da womb of da Goddess. It is a time of spirit descendin’ into da form an’ solidarity of matter, represented by da stillness of da cold an’ frozen eart’. It is also a time for craftin’ an’ repairin’ or workin’ indoors to make an’ fix da tools needed for da coming year.” Beth glances over her shoulder as she arrays a garland of holly and ivy along the mantle of the fireplace in the great room, allowing the ripe red berries to catch light from the windows, to make sure that Anakin is following along and not bored to death by her lecture. She’s careful not to impose her beliefs on him, despite having a firm hold of her own paradigm. He’s still constructing his own, waiting for the right mentor to find him. Some part of her suspects that search is not so strenuous, that he is content to remain within her umbrage. She’s prideful in her belief that her tradition gives her an older legacy, and she will swear that it is the ways of the Wyck that spread like fire among the Sleepers aeons ago, changing only a little with each culture that adopted that faith as their own. Of course, she also says that most Traditions will have the same story to tell, and most of them would be wrong. Except she’d do it with a wink and a smile, with very little more than playful sibling-rivalry in her tone. In the wan light streaming through the sheer curtains, his profile is still razor-sharp but not deathly worrisome, he’s filled out slightly since his arrival on her doorstep. In the three years he’s been under her roof he’s regained his colour, he’s grown a little more confident in himself, and no longer has that rattling cough that worried her into insomnia for months. He still hasn’t overcome all of his pains, illnesses, or neuroses, but she’s no longer afraid to leave him unattended nor does she think she will wake up one morning to find a bare home and clinic with nothing but her regrets for company. “Da Art of Matter, for Verbena involves infusing cold an’ unlivin’ substance wi’ Spirit and Life. Da ability t’ take an’ shape da raw stuff of da world into tools an’ da kine of beauty has always been seen as a magickal art, an’ we hold to da views of smi’ds, weavers, carpenters, an’ oddah crafters as practicin’ a sort of magick of dey own. By understandin’ how Prime has passed t’rough Spirit to become Matter, a witch can see da essence or Pattern of matter an’ alter it to suit his will.” This is all theoretical to her, she has never been able to learn that particular Art, though with specially prepared items, she can still bid spirits to bind with them to create talismans and fetishes, and he’s already known quite intimately how well she wields the sphere of Life. But she still owes him an explanation of all the Spheres, and how they were attempted to be taught to her. She hates having to acknowledge that his home is nothing like her own, save for the blessed heat and humidity, but they make a good go of it. “Foci of Matter magick are da tools of craftahs an’ makers, from simple kitchen utensils like knives, spoons, an’ bubblin’ cauldrons to da hammah, chisel an’ da anvil. Fire is a focus for da Matter Sphere, transformin’ da heat of da hearth,” she pronounces that word with extreme care, forcing herself the digraph correctly for him, “da oven, an’ da forge. We are known for firin’ or forgin’ matter into new forms as one might fire newly moulded clay t’ set its shape, or beat red-hot metal into some new life. Personally, I find it small kine silly…clearly Fire belong to Forces, but ya eventually gonna see dere’s a lot of overlap between da Spheres. What I’d like ya f’ do, aftah ya help me set up da candles t’roughout da house an’ we go grab lunch…Was t’inkin’ we go t’ T’irteen an’ grab some mushroom phillys an’ a impossibly huge order of dose tater tot nachos….is to come up wi’ somet’ing you’d like to make or some talisman you’d love f’ have… an’ we can practice t’ see if you got a talent f’ Matter. Personally, I’mma hand make us some 'ahu'ula ahead of carnival season.”

Second Chances
Melizabeth Week Day 4: Journey/Home
Elizabeth’s heart beat faster as a gust of wind hurried past and brushed her face. To avoid the backwards push of the current, she drifted sideways with a minimal flap of her wings, into the fluffy banks of a cloud. The tiny drops of water tickled her arms, and the nerves connecting her four wings to her spine bristled with an energy she still learned to adjust to. The white feathers could carry her farther than she could have ever walked, and as long as there was magical energy inside of her, they would never tire.
The sun warmed her skin, and joy fastened her pace as she rose to higher spheres where the winds blew in her favor.
The sharp sound of larger wings beating air confirmed that Meliodas had caught up to her, and when Elizabeth rolled midair to look skywards, he faced her with a wide grin. “Didn’t you say back-flying was a stupid stunt only invented for the purpose of showing off?” he asked and placed his hands on his hips in the most indignant and amusing position he could perform.
“I’m only taking this risk because I know you will catch me if I lose focus,” Elizabeth said. “You’ve always been there to catch me. And it offers me the opportunity to watch you.”
“Well, that’s a very good excuse, you can learn from the best Demon sky artist in all of Britannia. Although gotta say, the competition has become sparse recently.”
Elizabeth laughed and returned to the facedown position she was more familiar with. Her back had tensed during the short-lived performance, and she waggled her wings to prevent a cramp as she used the fading edges of an upcurrent to glide alongside Meliodas.
“I’m so happy for Arthur for what he has accomplished in Camelot already,” Elizabeth said. The images of their visit filled her inner eye, and she couldn’t help but awe in silent at the splendor the capital of the south had displayed. “In such a short amount of time, he has brought wealth and peace to his kingdom. And the citizens were so happy… I think in a few years Camelot will overtake Liones as the most powerful kingdom in Britannia.”
“At this pace it won’t take longer than a couple months I’d say. Every low-class Holy Knight is already begging to become part of Arthur’s elite. But he’s a good kid, he earned this victory.”
Elizabeth smiled. “He looked so proud when he guided us through the streets. Like a king people want to follow, no matter where he leads them.”
“Of course he’s proud of Camelot, it’s his home. He rebuilt that place with nothing but the crazy powers Merlin handed to him when he was barely old enough to drink.” Despite Meliodas’ joking comment, he failed to ban the bitterness from his voice in its entirety. A few grim lines had formed around his mouth.
“Are you still angry with Merlin?” Elizabeth asked. The shift in his expression confirmed she had been dead right with her assumption.
“Yeah, I am, and if I stop showing it, her dense head won’t pick up on the fact that she made a mistake. She hurt you. Even risked killing you. She won’t get away with it that easily.”
Elizabeth slowed her pace to examine the hills and cliffs and ranges of fine weather clouds around them. Merlin was their friend, moreover, she belonged to some of Elizabeth’s earliest memories of a time burdened with hardship but also beautiful, tender moments. What Merlin did might have been selfish, but Elizabeth had long forgiven her. And if Meliodas did the same, maybe their friendship would return to the better shape of days past.
“Merlin is your comrade, our friend,” Elizabeth said. “The Seven Deadly Sins were like a family to me when I journeyed with you across the land. And I know you feel the same, all these people mean more to you than your own happiness. You can’t tear this bond apart because Merlin has found something she dedicated all her efforts to. We both saw how happy she was to stand next to Arthur as his advisor. I will not begrudge her of the joy she had been searching all her life.”
Meliodas looked at her with an adoration strong enough to outshine the sun in the heavens above. “It seems I’ll never stop learning from your kindness and your strength.”
They continued their flight in silence, a warm, welcoming silence that never felt uncomfortable. One with the wind and the clouds, the Demon and the Goddess glided northwards, sometimes racing each other through the white, fluffy towers, then drifting along with lazy movements, their fingers interlaced. The delight filling Elizabeth’s heart like the warmth of an open fire in Liones’ castle during the cold winter months could only be tainted by the tiredness of her muscles.
As the exhaustion of her legs and arms pulled her downward below the clouds and allowed a glimpse at the landscape, Elizabeth’s heartbeat stumbled. Liones’ capital, with its uncounted houses of waddle and daub secluded by tall stone walls no human army had ever overcome, lay embedded into the hills of grass and bright yellow canola. An image of true beauty. They had almost reached their destination.
Elizabeth fell into a gentle dive to cross the remaining distance while Meliodas followed at her heels, ready to catch her if the long hours of travel claimed their toll on the last miles before the finish line. But Elizabeth was confident that she could make it, and as a metal finial caught the light between the treetops of a grove just outside the city, she steepened her flight path and hurried towards the beacon. The tented roof coming into view right after brought a smile to her face. The Boar Hat.
Home.
Over the course of 107 lifetimes, Elizabeth had lived in many houses, and for a while she might have called them home. The simple tent of Dusk Bison skin she had slept in during her time as a member of the savage tribe; the cabin of a trading vessel where each morning had been filled with the smell of salt and old wood; like a faint dream, the images of her first homeland, the massive alabaster towers of the Goddess Realm. The small house with the green door she had shared with Meliodas in Danafall had been especially dear to her. But all these could not compare to the tavern with its pointed rooftop and newly polished sign that identified the building as the ‘Boar Hat’.
When Elizabeth would one day breathe her last in this world, this place would be the one she would remember as her home Their home.
A few steps away from the porch, Elizabeth touched down on the ground with wobbling legs but with a joy in her heart so great it cramped her chest. Meliodas came to a hold beside her. But when he and Elizabeth entered the tavern room, they stopped dead in their tracks.
“SURPRISE!”
They had all gathered in the crowded space close to the entrance door, the Sins and company. Ban held out a massive apple-pie to the newcomers with a grin, Elaine clinging to his neck with a smile almost as wide. Gowther, dressed in the tavern uniform and covered with garlands of paper in more colors than Elizabeth could name, carried a tray stacked to the brim with mugs of ale while Hawk sniffed at his feet with a self-confident ‘pugoh’. Diane, who had been waiting at King’s side, rushed over to trap Elizabeth in a hearty embrace.
“Have you guys organized all this just for us?” Elizabeth asked once Diane had given her space to breathe.
“Sure,” Diane answered with a grin. “It’s been two months since we all got together like this, so we wanted to use the opportunity now that you have some time to lie low. You two are so hard to track down these days.”
“It was all master’s plan,” Ban said as he patted Meliodas’ unruly strands of hair, making full use of his height advantage. “He informed Gowther, who happened to be in town, about when ya’ll be back home. He’s the one to get the whole party running.”
Elizabeth dropped to her knees to give Hawk a hug. “Thank you, this is wonderful, Hawk.”
“I only did it to taste Ban’s scraps again,” he said to misdirect suspicion, but his eyes were leaking tears.
The group joked and laughed and sat together as though they had never been apart. Ban swayed dangerously in his chair after the third serving of ale, Diane and King talked about how well the merger between the Giant and Fairy Clan was coming together, and Hawk happily munched his way through an enormous bowl of Chicken Mantango scraps. After about an hour, they sent a toast to Escanor with a bottle of Castellio wine Gowther had obtained in a remote market place of an even more remote town for this special occasion. And while Elizabeth felt a knot in her throat when remembering the loss of their friend who had stood beside them throughout their journey, she had rarely been happier.
Because even though the Boar Hat was her and Meliodas’ home, the picture remained incomplete without their friends. These clay walls and coarse-crafted tables had been her favorite place for so long not because of the charm of its interior design, but because of the people she had shared this place with. And were it not for the two empty seats, Elizabeth could have pretended to return to these carefree days.
Elaine was about to hand Elizabeth a bottle with mild cider when a knocking came from the entrance. All heads turned and conversation died down, before King left his stool to open for the guest.
“You’re late,” he said with a tad of unease and shifted to allow Elizabeth a glimpse at the person entering the Boar Hat.
Merlin looked lost and remained at the door, emptyhanded and smaller than she actually was. She failed to meet the eyes of the gathering for long and lowered her gaze.
“I invited Merlin as well,” Gowther said in an attempt to bridge the silence hanging in the room like a physical weight. “I hope you don’t mind, Captain.”
Elizabeth spun in her chair in expectation of an angry growl or a question about why Merlin was standing in his house without permission ready to hurl at their heads, but no muscle twitched in Meliodas’ face. Without a word, he walked to the counter, reached for a wine bottle in the far corner of the shelf, and filled a wine glass with red liquor. If someone had placed a fork on their table, the sound would have echoed through the room like a cacophony; even Hawk had paused his meal. Meliodas’ feet on the stone floor sounded too loud in Elizabeth’s ears, despite his light step, as he crossed the final meters between himself and Merlin.
He handed her the wine glass with a smile, small but earnest. “Have a seat.”
Merlin stared at him in stunned silence, the glass shaking in her hands. “Thank you, Meliodas,” she said with a hoarse voice. Not since the Seven Deadly Sins had been founded had she addressed him by his name instead of his title as ‘Captain’.
Still a little uneasy, Merlin followed Meliodas to the large wooden table where the rest of the party had gathered and seated herself next to Gowther.
“Anyway, what I wan’ed to say’s that the Captain really messed up on our first mission,” Ban said. While he still sounded drunk, his eyes were clear and attentive. “Ya still remember how bad his motivation speech was? Merlin had to take over halfway through, isn’t that right Merlin?”
“I remember,” Merlin said with the tiniest of smiles when the memory resurfaced. “He was interrupted because you continued to challenge him to an arm-wrestling match and refused to take no for an answer.”
“That was the first time I won against him. Elaine, did I ever tell ya about the competition I have running with the Captain? You see, I…”
And like that, pleasant chatter returned to the table, and Merlin, despite sitting on her stool with a noticeable stiffness, had regained her place in the group if only for a little while. Elizabeth beamed at Meliodas and took his hand under the table.
“I’m so happy all of us can sit together like this. And that Merlin is with us too,” she whispered. “I believe she realizes how much she has hurt you, and if you give it some time, this matter will never again stand between you. All she needed was a second chance.”
“Just like I needed a second chance when I met you. I wouldn’t have been able to take a single step forward if it weren’t for you. Thank you, Elizabeth.”
Instead of an answer, Elizabeth gave Meliodas an encouraging squeeze of his hand and leaned her head against his shoulder. No matter what he did or what he would do, she would stand beside him to show kindness and forgive his mistakes when he could not forgive himself.
Always.

A Piece of Home: A Christmas One-Shot
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas!
Claire had a theory: whatever deity presided over this world was out to get her. Plain and simple. Bad luck followed her, like an unnerving shadow. Perhaps she had walked under too many ladders in a past life. Perhaps it was a genetic disposition, like left handed-ness. Perhaps she was cursed.
Despite the reason, she knew herself well enough to know that her current situation shouldn’t have surprised her: flat tire, middle of nowhere, snow storm, Christmas Eve. It was a goulash of bad luck ingredients just simmering into a unfortunate evening. And, as unfortunes go, she was woefully unprepared. No spare. No tools. No hope.
Damn.
She was going to freeze to death in her car. Or, at least lose her fingers to frostbite. Whichever came first.
Her panic subsided as she remembered the invention of mobile phones.
Thank God.
Claire thrust her hand into the depths of the oversized pockets on her wool coat, fishing out said device. The metal was cool against her hand. Pressing the home button, her heart plummeted.
The phrase no service blinked up at her.
Shit.
She really was screwed.
***
Deep within her rational mind, Claire knew that there was a slim chance of her being stranded for long in her situation. The road she was on was less traveled, but not totally abandoned. It just seemed so for the lack of cars—owing to it being late Christmas Eve night—and the muffling snow.
Despite such knowledge, she could help the panic from settling into her throat. She began crawling about her car, raising her phone at awkward angles. But the no service did not disappear. Settling back into the driver’s seat, she began fiddling with the radio as a distraction.
“...I’m dreaming of a whi..”
“...On a one horse…”
“...Jack Frost nipping at your nose…”
“Excuse me!”
A knock at her window startled her, causing her heart to spasm within her chest.
“Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ!”
The man hovering beside her window was tall, handsome, and vaguely familiar. Claire rolled it down to get a better look.
“Hello?”
“It seems ye may need some help.”
Claire’s gazes roved over his face, from his auburn curls to his deep slanted eyes to his wide, good natured mouth.
“I know you…?”
A chuckle. “Aye. Yer Claire.”
“And you’re… from Professor Bailey’s class, right? The Literature Seminar.” A pause, as she searched her brain for the man’s name. “It’s James, isn’t it?”
“Aye,” he repeated. “But ye can call me Jamie.”
“Well, Jamie. I am in a bit of a sticky situation. You don’t happen to have a spare tire, do you?”
“Nay, I’m sorry.”
“Fuck!” Remembering her company, Claire clapped a hand over her mouth. “Sorry.”
But Jamie just laughed, his smile crinkling his eyes. “Nay worry. This is a bit of a fuck situation.”
“You got that right…”
“Here, let me help ye. My parent’s house isna verra far. That’s where I’m heading. Ye can call someone when ye get there.”
“That’s kind of you, Jamie, but—“
“Please. I dinna feel right leaving ye out in the cold.”
Claire sighed. “Thank you. That would be nice.”
***
The ride was almost silent. Although Jamie and Claire were acquainted through school, their knowledge of each other was limited. What they knew, they learned from others: Claire knew Jamie had a large family, played rugby as a teenager, and had a sensitive heart towards babies and animals. Jamie knew Claire wrote for the university newspaper, owned a cat, and loved the rain.
Everything else was in the realm of unknown. Claire broke the silence first.
“I don’t wish to ruin your Christmas Eve with your family.”
“Nonsense. Ye willna ruin Christmas. It’s fine.”
“Are you sure? I don’t think your parents would be too pleased that you’re bringing a strange woman you rescued from the road to their house.”
“Honestly, I think they’ll just be happy I’m bringing a woman,” he teased. Claire stiffened. Would his parents think they were a couple? “Besides, yer no a strange woman. I ken ye, ye ken me. I was just at the right place at the right time.”
“If you’re sure…”
Jamie reached over, and patted her hand gently. It was a quick gesture—one of reassurance—but Claire couldn’t help the way her heart skipped a beat. He really was incredibly good-looking. His profile was strong, with an angular nose and a steel jaw. His deep red curls softened his severe features, lending him a more boyish charm. Claire could, quite honestly, stare at him all day.
“Aye, I’m sure.”
***
The house rose through the trees, the lights through the windows casting a dim glow on the surrounding land. It was large, retangular, and obviously old. Houses nowadays weren’t made like that, with faded gray stones and overgrown vines. With the strands of Christmas bulbs that outlined the roof and windows and the snow that covered the grass, it looked very much like a fairy tale.
“Wow.” Claire hadn’t meant to speak aloud, but the word exited her mouth in a breath.
“Aye, I ken. It’s quite a sight.”
“How old is it?”
“About 300 years, I think. It’s been in my family for so long. Lallybroch, we call it.”
“What does that mean?”
“Lazy tower. There’s a tower to the east, there.” His hands pointed into the darkness. “Ye canna quite see it now. It’s too dark.”
“How is it lazy?”
“It leans,” Jamie explained simply. “It’s been here as long as the house.”
“That’s amazing…” The history lover within her had some many questions, but she quelled them; she wasn’t planning on being here long enough to have them answered.
“Well, come on, then. Let’s get ye inside.”
***
If the outside of Lallybroch was exquisite, the inside was magical. Garland and poinsettias hung in the archways, as ceramic Christmas trees lined the tables. Jamie led her through the archway on the right.
“Mam? Da?”
The room was large and open, with a shiny cherry hardwood floor and a fireplace crackling. The pièce de résistance, though, was the eight foot Christmas tree in the center of the room. Lights shone from every crevice and branch, and tinsel swirled toward the top where a bright star rested. Claire had never had large Christmases, had never had much of a family to share it with. But here, she could see the appeal.
So distracted she was by the incredible decorations, she missed the figures huddled around the fire. Jamie’s family, she presumed.
“Jamie? Is that you?” A woman’s voice rang out.
“Aye, Mam.”
The woman stood from her place by the fire to greet them. As she came closer, Claire could see exactly where Jamie got his looks. Same hair, same pointed nose, same dimpled chin. She started when she realized Jamie wasn’t alone.
“And who might this be?”
“Oh, this is Claire. We go to university together. I found her on the road with a flat. Claire, this is my mam, Ellen.”
Claire gripped the woman’s smooth hand in her own. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. You have a beautiful home.”
“Oh, thank ye verra much!”
“Where’s Jenny?”
“Oh, she’s putting the bairns to bed. They couldna wait. Ready for Santa, and all that. Come, Claire. Ye should meet Jamie’s da.”
“Mam, Claire isna planning on staying long…”
“It’ll just be moment, aye? Come, dear.”
Claire obliged, following Ellen Fraser toward the fire where a larger figure sat. He was broad and black-haired, cropped close to his head. Jamie definitely looked like his mother, but he had his father’s eyes: slanted and cerulean.
“Brian, this is Claire. Claire, my husband Brian.” Brian Fraser’s face softened, a half smile lighting his face.
“Pleasure to meet ye, Claire. What can we do for ye?”
“She’s a classmate of Jamie’s, dear. He met her on the road with a flat tire.”
“Oh, no. Yer more than welcome to use our phone to call a ride if ye need. It’s just across the hall.”
“Thank you, sir.”
She on her heel, and left the room.
***
“She’s pretty, Jamie,” Ellen whispered conspiratorially.
“Mam…”
“And polite, too,” Brian interjected.
“Ye too, Da?”
“Aye, someone needs to push ye a bit.”
“Push me?”
“Mmhmmm. Is she no the Claire ye had a crush on last semester?”
“I...I…”
“Though so.” Brian went back to nursing his tumbler of whisky, having proven his point.
“Perhaps it is yer lucky night, mo mhac. A Christmas miracle of sorts.”
“Yer exaggerating, Mam. It isna like that.”
“No? But it could be.”
***
Closed. Every single tow company Claire called was closed. Of course she had to have a flat on Christmas Eve. How was she supposed to get home, now? Was Uber open?
“Any luck?” The voice startled her, her hand flying up to her chest to keep her heart in place.
“Jamie! You’ve got to stop surprising me!”
“Sorry.”
She giggled at his contrite expression. “It’s okay. And to answer your question, no. No luck at all. All the towing companies are closed.”
“Yeah. It is Christmas Eve. Do ye have family to call to pick ye up?”
“No. I don’t.” She could feel her face fall at the mention of family.
Apparently, Jamie saw it, too. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. It was a long time ago.”
A silence, awkward and deafening, filled the room. And then, suddenly: “We’ll have to share a family then.”
“Pardon?”
“No one should be alone on Christmas. Not even filthy-mouthed Sassenach such as yerself.” Jamie’s grin grew broader at his own teasing.
“No, no. I’m not going to impose…”
“Ye won’t be! My mam loves ye already!”
“She just met me!”
“Well, she’s a good judge of character.”
“You don’t even know me that well.”
“We can get to know each other, become friends. Anything is possible at Christmas.”
“I don’t know, Jamie.”
Claire could see the wheels turning in Jamie’s mind, his eyes alight with ideas. Finally, he stuck his hand out. “James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser. 6’4. Twenty-one years old. Taurus.”
His smile was infectious, and Claire could feel her lips rising in response. She grasped his hand. “Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp. 5’6. Twenty-three years old. Libra.”
“Nice to meet ye, Claire.”
“You too, Jamie.”
The two walked out of the room, their hands still inexplicably twined. So intent on the other, they almost tripped over a small huddled form in the hallway.
“Wee Jamie! Are ye no supposed to be in bed?”
The little form uncurled revealing a small boy in Christmas pajamas. He looked up at the two with innocent brown eyes.
“Aye, Uncle Jamie. But I couldna sleep!”
“Too excited, hmm?”
“Aye! Santa!”
“Well, he won’t come until yer asleep.”
“I ken… Who is this?”
“Oh, this is my friend, Claire. Claire, this is my eldest nephew, Jamie Murray.”
Claire crouched to Wee Jamie’s eye level. “Nice to meet you. I like your PJs.”
The boy blushed sweetly. “Thank ye.” And, then, distractedly: “What’s that?” A small, chubby hand pointed to the ceiling above where Jamie and Claire stood. A small sprig was hung there by a red ribbon.
Mistletoe.
“It’s mistletoe, wee’un. If ye stand under with someone, ye have to kiss them…”
“Eww!” And with that, Wee Jamie ran away with the threat of kissing.
Claire turned to Jamie, cheeks pinkening. “Well, I suppose we shouldn’t break tradition…”
His eyes narrowed with desire. “Nay. That’s bad luck, I think.”
It was hesitant, slow. Achingly slow. Jamie placed a large hand on Claire’s cheek, holding her firmly in place. Claire’s arms wrapped around his middle, feeling the flannel of his shirt.
Lips brushed, quickly. A soft kiss. A chaste kiss that promised more.
Perhaps this Christmas wasn’t so unlucky after all.

Mistletoe Trees
Bucky x Reader
Life is funny sometimes. You were renting one of your spare rooms out to a vet, one who had been a prisoner of war for a very a long time. You were good friends with Sam Wilson so it wasn't uncommon of him to ask you for help from time to time. He would give you a bit of background on the people he sent to you and James Barnes was no different. You knew that he different, not just cause of the metal arm.
It wasn't the fact he was the oldest man to come through your door looking lost and hopeless. Nor was it the fact he looked the same age as your friend despite being born in the early 1900's. There was something uniquely different, maybe it was the way he spoke, or the look in his eyes. He had gentle nature about him and often times was so quiet that you would forget that he had even moved in, either way you found yourself spending more time with him then you had any other person you had come to meet.
"Hey Buck." You called softly as you knocked on his door.
"Come in." You heard him reply from the other side. Slowly you opened the door, Bucky was shirtless as he held his body stiffly parallel to the floor. Sweat slightly glistened his body as he continued to do push ups, you leaned your hip against the door frame and crossed your arms.
"Want to help me get a tree?" You asked, Bucky paused, eyes drifting up your legs till they met yours. "I mean, you don't have to come with me but it would be nice to have company and maybe some help getting it on my ranger rover."
"Yeah, just give me a second to change." He smiled, bring his knees forward so he was kneeling position.
"Awesome, I'll meet you down stairs." You grinned shutting the door softly and heading down the steps.
Bucky smiled softly to himself, nodding lightly before standing to change. It was something he wasn't used to still, having someone wanting to be in his presence besides Steve and yet you seemed to make sure that he always felt included. Quickly he changed into a pair of old jeans, and burgundy henley. He slipped his shoes on, which even after the last couple of years being away from hydra still felt foreign to him. Bucky grabbed his leather jacket from the back of the door and left his room.
As he came down the down the stairs he noticed you had taken garland and wrapped it around the banister. He smiled to himself as he hit the bottom and saw a small white deer and miniature spruce tree. Bucky turned the corner walking to the living room where you were waiting. His eyes widening as he saw that you taken most of the day to decorate. The fireplace held more deep green garland with deer and little ceramic homes. Tiny figures of people set out across snow white felt looking like something out of a Christmas movie.
His heart warmed when he saw next to your stocking was one with his name on it. Bucky bit his bottom lip as he noticed the lights expertly strung across the room. It felt warm, and festive and for the first time in along time he looked forward to the holiday he remembered from his youth.
"Ready?" You asked, breaking him from his spell. He looked over and noticed that you had bundled up, a bright smile on your face.
"You got me a stocking?" He asked, looking down to the hardwood floor as you opened the front door.
"Why wouldn't I?" You asked, stepping out on to the porch as he closed and locked the door behind him. He looked around and noticed that you had even taken the time to decorate the porch space as well.
"I don't know, just.. I mean.. I'm not living here permanently and I'm not family." He stuttered through slightly as you both walked to the suv sitting in the drive way. "I'm here to try and readjust that's all I wasn't expecting.."
He trailed off as you walked around to the drivers side. You looked over the hood, those blue eyes held confusion and a trace of sadness in them. A man who had lost his whole family while being held against his will and forced to do things no person should.
"Guessing Wilson really didn't explain what I do?" You smiled unlocking the car, you pulled the door open. "Get in, I'll explain."
Once you both were in and buckled you turned the car on, letting it idle to warm up. You turned the music down and looked out the back window.
"Yes, you live at my house till you can get readjusted to civilian life. And with that comes all the holidays." You started, finally putting the car in gear. "A couple years back Sam asked if I knew of place where a friend of his could stay till he got back on his feet. I had an extra bedroom and Sam has always helped me out when I needed it so, I let the guy stay. Well, since then I've had over dozen or so soldiers with me at some point. And they've all told him the same thing, that to them my house never felt like they were being boarded till their treatment was over. That it felt like home."
You paused looking over at Bucky, his eyes were trained on his lap, looking down at his gloved hand.
"Each and everyone has had a stocking if they have stayed through Christmas. Each stocking is tucked lovingly in my basement, in case they ever need a place to come back to." You told him, eyes focused back on the road as you continued to make your way to the Christmas tree farm. "My dad.. He was a service member, when I was little he had to go to war and he was never the same when he came back. I sixteen when he ended it, and with it whatever demons he had had. And I told myself, that if I could in someway, to make a difference I would."
"So you help us for him?" He finally asked as you pulled into a parking lot.
"Yes, or I try. Cause maybe if he could of had a safe place, somewhere quiet to decompress for a bit, maybe he'd still be here." You gave him a small smile before getting out.
Bucky followed suit, meet you at the nose of the car. He wasn't sure how he felt, he knew you didn't talk about your childhood and it made him feel good that you opened up. He watched you as you walked from tree to tree, evening had set, and the lights over heard twinkled against the snow that lazily fell.
"What do you think?" You asked him, pointing to seven foot noble never bothering to turn.
"I like it." He smiled, his eyes staying on you.
"Alright, let's go buy it and then we'll get some hot cocoa for the ride home." You smiled looking back at him.
You paid for the tree in cash and Bucky helped you get it on the roof. You went back to the small window at the farm house, ordering two cups of peppermint hot cocoa. The lady at the window smiled when she pointed up. Slowly both you and Bucky looked up, and perched on the rafters above you was the green and white swig of mistletoe.
"Free cocoa, for tradition." The lady smiled.
"Can't pass up tradition." Bucky smiled, biting his bottom lip as his heart pounded.
"Or hot cocoa." You giggled, stepping in closer to Bucky. He wrapped his around around the back of your waist, and gently pressed his lips against yours. Your heart skipped a beat, and it was over faster then you wished, when he pulled away breaking the kiss the corner of his lips were pulled back giving him a lopsided smile.
"Here's your cocoas." The lady stated, and you felt the heat rise to your face suddenly.
"Thank you." You whispered as both of you headed back to the car.
"Thanks for having me come out with you." Bucky said, breaking the silence.
"Thanks for coming with me, normally I go by myself but.." You looked at him, Bucky raised his eye brow at you. "I like spending time with you."

If #copyright was shorter, #PublicDomain #recordings would have been duplicated and preserved; In a #secret report in 2009, #UniversalMusicGroup estimated the loss at about 500,000 song titles. #ip #intellectualproperty
The lost works most likely included masters in the Decca Records collection by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland. The fire probably also claimed some of Chuck Berry’s greatest recordings, produced for Chess Records, as well as the masters of some of Aretha Franklin’s first appearances on record.
Almost of all of Buddy Holly’s masters were lost, as were most of John Coltrane’s masters in the Impulse Records collection. The fire also claimed numerous hit singles, likely including Bill Haley and His Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock,” Etta James’s “At Last” and the Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie.”
The list of artists affected spans decades of popular music. It includes recordings by Ray Charles, B.B. King, the Four Tops, Joan Baez, Neil Diamond, Sonny and Cher, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Al Green, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffett, the Eagles, Aerosmith, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Barry White, Patti LaBelle, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Police, Sting, Steve Earle, R.E.M., Janet Jackson, Guns N’ Roses, Mary J. Blige, No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails, Snoop Dogg, Nirvana, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Tupac Shakur, Eminem, 50 Cent and the Roots.
What happened?
The fire started in the early hours of June 1, 2008.
Overnight, maintenance workers had used blowtorches to repair the roof of a building on the set of New England Street, a group of colonial-style buildings used in scenes for movies and television shows. The workers followed protocol and waited for the shingles they worked on to cool, but the fire broke out soon after they left, just before 5 a.m.
The flames eventually reached Building 6197, known as the video vault, which housed videotapes, film reels and, crucially, a library of master sound recordings owned by Universal Music Group.
Hundreds of firefighters responded to the fire. After trying to douse it with foam retardant and water from a nearby lake, emergency personnel decided to dismantle the warehouse containing the vault to more easily put out the fire.
What are master recordings, and why do they matter?
A master recording is the one-of-a-kind original recording of a piece of music. It’s the source from which other vinyl records, CDs, MP3s and all other recordings are made.
According to the article, documents show that the vault contained masters dating back decades, including multitrack recordings on which individual instruments remained isolated from one another. There were also session masters, including recordings that had never been commercially released. The recordings within the vault came from to some of the most important record labels of all time.
Audiophiles and audio professionals view such recordings with special regard.
“A master is the truest capture of a piece of recorded music,” Adam Block, the former president of Legacy Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment’s catalog arm, told the magazine. “Sonically, masters can be stunning in their capturing of an event in time. Every copy thereafter is a sonic step away.”
Why are we only finding about this now?
At the time, the fire made news around the world, and the vault featured heavily in that coverage. But most articles focused only on the video recordings in the archive and, even then, news outlets largely characterized the disaster as a crisis averted.
Jody Rosen, the writer of the article, described the successful effort to play down the scope of the loss as a “triumph of crisis management” that involved officials working for Universal Music Group on both coasts. Those efforts were undoubtedly aimed at minimizing public embarrassment, but some suggest the company was also particularly worried about a backlash from artists and artist estates whose master recordings had been destroyed.
The real extent of the loss was laid out in litigation and company documents obtained by Mr. Rosen, a contributing writer for the magazine.
How bad is the loss?
Mr. Rosen described the loss as historic, and even Universal Music Group itself — privately — viewed what happened in bleak terms: “Lost in the fire was, undoubtedly, a huge musical heritage,” reads one 2009 internal assessment.
Record companies have had a troubled history with such recordings and have been known to trash them in bulk. Decades ago, employees of CBS Records reportedly took power saws to multitrack masters to sell the reels as scrap metal. In the 1970s, RCA destroyed masters by Elvis Presley in a broader purge.
Because of that history, industry professionals have long questioned how committed the major music labels are to preserving what they see as priceless artifacts.
Today, most commercial recordings from the past century and beyond are controlled by only three giant record companies: Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and, of course, Universal Music Group.

Hang Your Holiday Lights without Damaging Your Roof
Holidays are the perfect time for lights and decorations during peaceful winter evenings. This is the best time to spend with your friends and family and to enjoy the mesmerizing festive decorations. Well, as Holiday is just around the corner, we all are busy opening the piled-up boxes of string lights, garlands, and wintergreens in our storage rooms and testing them out for the big evening. Where there are endless decorations for the lawn and around the house, nothing is ever complete without a beautifully lit roof. While roof lighting is a must-have for the celebrations, it is very essential to take care of the structure of your roof while installing those lights. Depending on how these lights are lodged, these can cause potential damage to the roof. Here, in this blog, is some advice that may help you with Holiday light installation without damaging the roof over your head.
Test out the lights first Many people don’t pay proper attention to checking the lights and wires before putting them on. This is where the problem emerges. As the lights have not been checked beforehand, there might be a possibility of an open wire or a broken light bulb.
These physical defects may cause a serious fire through an electric spark. Even a tiny spark may harm your roof and can cause a destructive fire throughout the house. Avoid nails While hanging up the Holiday lights on the roof, many people prefer using nails and screws to secure the lights in place. This is an extremely dangerous act. Not only does this cause a potential electric malfunction due to the metal nails and brackets being used, it also forms holes throughout the roof that not only weaken the roof itself but the side lining as well.
Roofs with holes in them are also a risk for the rainy season as the rainwater may drip down those leaks and ruin your household articles. Water passing through the roof also tends to weaken the roof overtime. It is preferably suggested to hang your Holiday lights without nails.
Clips to hang Holiday lights This is the best way to hang Holiday lights on roof. Holiday light roof clips and Plastic brackets are available in the market that are strong enough to hold your decorative lights and these do not damage your roof as there is no need to drill holes in your roof to install these clips. Winter season brings in extreme moisture and the last thing you wish for is finding random molds and rots throughout the house due to a leaking roof. Minimize your roof time Although roofs are sound enough to protect your house, the shingles are very easily breakable beneath your feet. And if we’re talking about the cold snow during the season, there is already enough snow for the roof to hold up, on top of decorations. Therefore it is recommended to spend minimum time on the roof to protect yourself from getting hurt and the roof from collapsing.
Conclusion
There’s no fun in the holidays without having a glowing Santa Claus and his reindeers gliding on your roof, or a Menorah on the front lawn. We all relish the compliments from our friends and that one look of zeal from the competing neighbors across the street. But it is very essential to take care of your roof among all the ballyhoo.

Exactly how to Proposal for Roof Covering Jobs
We pound the sidewalk, put the operate in and do a good job to keep a good name ... all depends on the business and their structure. Clearly, such a work will certainly not have a real warranty provided to back the installation/workmanship quality in a case there are any kind of problems with the rood later on. However, the upfront cost-savings might well be worth the hassle, if you want to take the opportunity, and also have the stamina (as well as time) to take care of the shipment of the project. This is certainly the instance in numerous states, but some locations may have less rigid structure authorization needs. The important concern I see below, though, is that you type of worked as your own basic professional and the roofers you hired were essentially contracted workers.
Generally, asphalt tiles (one of the most typical roofing key in the U.S.) are the most inexpensive to replace. Next would certainly be wooden and metal tiles, which are center of the roadway.
Since it came off and cleaned up so conveniently, I made out. It was a 21 square roof covering as well as took 2 days much longer to cleanse and finish up all the little pieces. Lots of, currently 15 years of age building roofs, have 3 tab caps that are fired, while the remainder of the roofing still looks good. If I needed to set up a 3 tab now, which I would certainly not, the labor cost per sq will rise negating any financial savings on the materials.
How Much Cash Do Roofing Contractors Make?
Asphalt and steel reshingling is one of the most typical, while more expensive alternatives are clay and solar. Below is an expense graph to detach and also change an asphalt roofing by materials, removal, and complete setup price.
Garage Roof Replacement Cost.
Just how we charged for a typical basic, roofing job was 3 times the overall product expense to the nail, http://news.theatlanticreport.com/story/189026/garland-roofing-contractor-advising-citizens-to-assess-and-prepare-their-roof-ahead-of-hail-season-hits.html including a percent for insurance coverage.
Garage roofing substitute expenses in between $1,440 as well as $3,200 usually with most property owners spending about $2,092.
I was unable to obtain them any lower than $10,000.
Constantly check on the internet testimonials, credibility, plus long life prior to you pick your roofing contractor, whatever price is supplied at your door.
TPO Roof-- TPO roof prices in between $550 and $950 per square or between $5.50 and also $9.50 per square foot installed.
Do roofers make a lot of money?
youtube
The truth is, a 30-year shingle will not really last 30 years. The expected service life of a 30-year product, if properly cared for, is approximately 25 years. If it's not cared for properly, that 30 year shingle will only last 12 to 15 years. That's one of the big misconceptions in the roofing marketplace.
The employees were professional and also extremely reliable. I have one problem regarding the rain gutters which were not replaced, I believe the leading cap is drawn back too far. The rain gutter is a product that protects against fallen leaves as well as debris from entering. I will have the gutter company appeared and also examine them.
Working Out Roof Quote on an Insurance Insurance claim
Should I tip the roofers?
Call Your Insurance Agent Before Repairs If disaster strikes, you might want to immediately call a roofer to fix your roof. But first, you should contact your insurance provider. If you make repairs not covered by your policy, you may be stuck with the bill when your insurance company denies the claim.
This not only lengthens the setup procedure, but it likewise puts your brand-new seamless gutter system in danger of being harmed during uninstallation and reinstallation. Repairs as well as re-painting your gutters can be a pricey frustration too. Property owners aiming to make the outside or redesign of their new homes recognize just exactly how difficult the process can be. It can be difficult to determine which task to tackle initially-- exterior siding, roof covering, windows, or gutters. While there is no best way to technique exterior improvement, when it pertains to gutters versus roofing, your best choice is typically to choose a new roof covering initially.

Most certainly the cost of fixing a damaged glass is way below your insurance coverage deductible. While taking the cost of a brand new roof into consideration there are a lot of choices out there. While a brand new roof might be an enormous investment, additionally it is certainly one of the most important features of a house. While asphalt shingles are essentially the most inexpensive, and the most widely used materials, they are not as durable over the long term, and will want changing every 7-10 years relying of the sorts of weather the shingles have to endure. Has anybody ever bought 'left-over' roofing shingles on eBay? Also, a metal roof can be an important alternative for weathering a storm as it is not as susceptible to hail damage as asphalt shingles. Local Boston roofing experts can help suggest what it's best to do so far as upkeep and replacement in your house’s invaluable protecting. Find high quality contractors who're reliable and are specialists in their job.
Now, the Met Office consultants have finished examining the equipment. Denver Roofing confirmed yesterday that final Thursday actually was Britain's hottest day on document. They confirmed the previous report - 38.5C (101.3F) in Faversham, Kent, in 2003 - was broken by the brand new studying at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, which homes a climate commentary site that stories every 24 hours. But the Met Office say there could have been a fair greater temperature measured elsewhere within the UK - as some official commentary websites solely report month-to-month. It is vitally easy to acknowledge if the insurance company’s adjustor is guessing or if he already has an quantity in thoughts even before he leaves the workplace. Even small areas could cause further injury if not inspected and repaired quickly after the storm. From the bottom, you may search for any contemporary dents, elimination of paint, or cracks in the roof or siding. Also look through the websites to study extra a couple of roofing firm. It’s necessary to have the opinion of a reputable roofing and exterior dwelling improvement firm.
When you see the spike, it’s time to start getting quotes and begin trying to find the most cost effective automotive insurance rates another time. The apartments are situated below the Garland Lofts growth in Zetland - which was quietly evacuated eight months ago over water damage and fireplace security issues. Every time an insurer has to shell out money to cover a claim they turn into more inclined to pump up their premiums to make up for cash they are dropping. Insurance firms are a enterprise and they want to earn cash just as a lot as you need to save money. 1,000 deductible. He claims that he saves some huge cash. It is a hassle, however you realize who to blame; stupid people who keep filing claims for accidents that might have been prevented! For homeowners who live in areas that have high damage incidents, certain catastrophes will not be included on the homeowner’s policy, comparable to earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes. We also have a seventeen yr outdated son.
Some might require you to position your son as driver of the most expensive car. You might want to have your son as an element driver on one of the vehicles. Should I keep the comprehensive a part of my coverage? Comprehensive is a very good thing to have. Many residents have extreme storm injury, corresponding to items of their roof mendacity on their lawn, siding and window harm, and water leaking into their house. Any water injury, inside of your house, is a definite signal of roof injury. Does marijuana do less damage to the body than alcohol? What is the impact of alcohol on veins? When you're taking an energetic function when dealing with your Houston roofing contractor in inspecting, you possibly can rest assured that you'll love your new roof replacement or repair. Can you die from hail? What about insurance coverage for hail damage? If it attached to the car (stereo, tires) it could go beneath the auto insurance policy.

Interior Design Ideas: Small Lot Family Home
Hello, my dear friends! How GREAT it is to have you here! Are you having a good week so far? This week flew by! But I am looking forward to slowing down a little, spending more time just relaxing with my kids, baking, cooking and watching some movies. We need to learn to slow down and seize life, seize the moments we spend with our loved ones… and talk more looking into their eyes instead of a screen.
