to find promise of peace (and the solace of rest): a TMA fanfic
<< Beginning < Prev. || AO3 || My Website
Chapter 48: September 2008
The first Saturday in September is always a busy one for places like this, but Gerard has never minded. It means he’s less likely to be remembered.
Luckily, too, this being in the area of a university just over a week before start of term, he blends in neatly. He’s twenty-two, and even if he can pass for older if he needs to and always has been able to, he can pass for a uni student, too, or at least a graduate student. Being in Melanie’s company helps with that, too, especially since most of these kids are her classmates; Martin, too, fits right in, which is probably why Gerard can’t spot him right now. He’s not particularly worried. There’s been no whisper of anything regarding the Fourteen for ages, and certainly no hint of anything here.
“I’m glad you two could come up with me,” Melanie says, bumping her hip against Gerard’s. “Even just for a couple of days.”
“Hey, I owed Martin a birthday present. Someone to look in on Uncle Roger and Aunt Lily so he could have the weekend off was the least I could do.” Gerard winks, making Melanie laugh.
Melanie’s university is only about two hours from London by rail, but for various reasons, this is the first time Gerard and Martin have ever both been able to get up there at the same time. Gerard put in the effort because it’s important they both be here for this. This year, Melanie’s not living in a dorm hall, but in a flat nearby the campus that rents cheaply to students. It’s small, run-down, and not particularly safe, in Gerard’s opinion, but it’s something she doesn’t have to share and she can afford it for the fall term, at least. The flat came furnished, sort of—a sagging futon, a rickety table with two wobbly chairs, a cheap lamp with no shade—and Martin and Gerard came along to help her move in. They’re here to pick up a few things she needs to make it at least a bit more comfortable.
At least, that was the plan when they arrived. Melanie and Martin both have a gift for picking up good quality items relatively inexpensively, and she’s now holding a basket with several towels, a few dishes, a kettle in remarkably good shape, and a few other bits and bobs. Gerard wore the lampshade she found as a gaudy hat—briefly—but he’s currently carrying it, along with the galvanized metal bucket that was probably once for milk but which Melanie intends to use as a rubbish pail. The two of them have only just reconvened and are strolling more or less aimlessly, exclaiming over the displays at the booths and keeping an eye out for Martin. One part farmer’s market, one part swap meet, one part carnival, the attitude is upbeat and joyous, and in spite of the couple of people circulating with armfuls of pamphlets trying to recruit for their church or cult or whatever it is, Gerard is enjoying himself.
He stops to examine a table bristling with flower arrangements, which look like the last of the summer blooms. “Want a bouquet to brighten up the place, Neens?”
Melanie starts to shake her head, then stops and reaches out to touch one lightly. “Oh, look, lavender!”
“It’s potted,” the stall owner says eagerly. “Not cut. You’ll have it all winter and beyond if you treat it well.”
Gerard doesn’t even think about it. “How much?”
He’s just completing the transaction when Melanie waves at something behind him. Gerard turns to see Martin making his way towards them, the area rug Melanie picked out earlier over one shoulder and something gripped tightly in his other hand. His lips are set in a thin line, but he manages a smile when he reaches them. “Hey. Sorry.”
“You’re fine.” Gerard shifts the lampshade to his other hand and takes the potted lavender. “Where to now, Neenie?”
Melanie peers up at Martin. He can’t quite read her face. “Actually, I’m okay to just go home. I think I’m done here.”
Gerard is a bit surprised, but he acquiesces easily enough. He’s even more surprised when they walk the entire way back to Melanie’s new flat in silence.
As soon as they’re all inside with the door closed—it’s tiny, there’s barely enough room for all three of them at once, but there’s enough space for what Melanie will need—Melanie whirls on Martin. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
“It’s not—I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you leave early. It’s not…an emergency or anything.” Martin doesn’t look at her, though. “Where do you want this?”
“Just drop it. I’ll set it out in a minute. Martin, what. Is. Wrong?” Melanie asks emphatically.
“Martin?” Gerard touches his brother’s arm gently. If Martin’s saying it’s not an emergency, it doesn’t mean it’s not serious—it just means that whatever it is isn’t immediately resulting in one of the Fourteen coming after them. It could mean he overheard an unkind remark or saw someone he didn’t care for, or it could mean someone made an improper advance or actively hurt him. It could mean the caregiver Gerard hired for the weekend had called to say something had gone wrong, or it could mean that Gerard’s mother had called to say something nasty or order them back—she’s been in a twist lately. It could also mean something is actively after or just hurt Martin specifically and he doesn’t think it’s an emergency because it’s not after the others.
Martin takes a deep breath and sets the carpet down, but not the object in his other hand, which is wrapped in brown paper. He looks up at them. “I found a Leitner.”
Two bright red spots have appeared on his cheeks, and Gerard inhales sharply. He’s not blushing. Martin blushes from the shoulders up, something they discovered the first summer they were all at the seaside together after the onset of puberty and someone whistled at him when he took his shirt off. For the red to start on his face…Martin is angry.
“What is it? Who had it? What did they do?” Gerard fires off questions rapidly without really thinking about it.
“Did they hurt you?” Melanie balls her hands up into fists.
Gerard lets the pail slip off his arm with a clang and sets the potted lavender down with perhaps unnecessary force. “How much did it cost you? I’ll make sure Mum pays you back—”
“It was fifty pence, don’t worry about it. That’s not…” Martin presses his lips together tightly and closes his eyes for a moment, seeming to force himself to calm down. “It’s…it wasn’t the guy selling it. He didn’t even seem to realize he had it, didn’t know where he got it.”
“That sounds familiar.” Gerard takes a deep breath, making himself calm down. “Is it one that…you know, we’ve already run into previously?”
“No. It’s the Web. That’s…that’s not the problem either.”
“Martin.” Melanie pushes him lightly to make him sit on the futon, then sits next to him and gestures for Gerard to join them. Usually she’s in the middle, but she’s arranged things so Martin is in the middle this time, which is probably helpful. “Just spit it out, huh? Unless you read it, in which case I’m going to scoop your eyes out with a grapefruit spoon, it can’t be that bad.”
Martin doesn’t even smile. He spreads his hands over the package on his lap, which he still hasn’t unwrapped. They’re trembling faintly, and Gerard is worried. Before he can prod into it, Martin spits out in a voice so laden with disgust the words are practically physically present, “It’s a fucking picture book.”
“What?” Gerard grabs the parcel from Martin, who doesn’t really try to resist him, and yanks off the wrapping paper. It’s a square black book; judging by the location of the spine, he’s looking at the back of it. There are no words, only a crudely-sketched drawing of a spider, entirely black and white save the red bowler hat on the top of its head. “Jesus fuck.”
“How old is it?” Melanie takes it from Gerard, or at least partially, dragging it back onto Martin’s lap, then flips it over and flips it open before Gerard even has time to register the title. Opposite Jurgen Leitner’s familiar bookplate is a title page with the book’s name, the author’s name, and a copyright date. “1933. Shit, that’s…what, three generations? Four?”
“If it was all in one family. Which it wasn’t, if Jurgen fucking Leitner had it.” Gerard scowls. “And it’s been floating around for at least a decade. What kind of sick bastard would inflict these things on a child?”
“I mean…Lily. Aunt Mary. A whole fucking lot of people,” Melanie points out. “People are fucking assholes. And cults, like, bring kids in all the time, right? Think about the Lukases, or the…Fairchilds, right?”
“Fairchild’s just a name. They’re not actually a family,” Gerard says. “Closer to a cult.”
Melanie wipes her free hand over her face. “I just…they’ve all been nonfiction up ‘til now, haven’t they? Scholarly stuff. I didn’t…I didn’t know it could be fiction.”
“They can be anything,” Gerard says. “It’s not the book, it’s…it’s whatever the entities think will draw people in. Or whatever the people who serve that entity thought would draw people in, I guess. I dunno how it works really.”
“I hate this,” Martin bursts out, shoving his hands into his hair and gripping so tightly Gerard almost wonders if he’s going to rip it clean out of his scalp. “I hate that these books exist. I hate that the Fourteen or their agents or whatever have figured out the perfect way to lure people in and that it’s going to be different for different people. I hate that so many of these books are rare or unusual editions of books that do exist to the wider world so people wind up falling into them completely innocently because they can’t afford a new copy of a book they need for a course or think they’ve found a cheap edition of a book they loved in childhood. I hate that for every person deliberately pushing them on some unsuspecting sucker, there are three more who have no idea what they’ve got just trying to make a quick profit, and all of them are equally culpable in whatever happens next. I hate that there are people like your mum and Leitner who know what kind of powers these books have and just believe they’re stronger than them. I hate that books like these don’t end up staying in the family because so few people survive reading them and the ones that do aren’t interested in sharing. I hate that we’ve spent the last decade running around collecting these like we don’t know what they are, and I hate, I fucking hate that I can’t think of what to do with this goddamned book other than bring it to your mum and pray she doesn’t put it up for sale, because I don’t know what I’m going to do if this falls into another child’s hands now that I know it exists.”
Gerard sits in stunned silence for a minute. He doesn’t know why it’s never occurred to him that Martin is so…viscerally opposed to the existence of these books of power. He’s always seemed perfectly willing to go along with the hunt for them, handed them over with a hopeful look in his eyes even if he hasn’t been praised for it since that first time. Gerard resents them, maybe a little, because his mother loves them more than she loves him—not that he needs her to love him, he’s got Martin and Melanie for that—but to his shame, he’s never thought about the impact of the books themselves. It’s never occurred to him that his mother doesn’t keep the books for herself, not usually; she pores over them, gets the information she wants, and then offers them up for sale. He’s just never thought about it before. And Martin’s right, this one especially is the worst possible kind of book to fall in the wrong hands—which would probably be any hands, but especially the tiny ones it’s designed for.
How many children has it claimed? How many young parents trying to find something new for their babies? How many grandparents preparing to welcome the joy of their old age? Have teachers read it to classrooms, baby-sitters read it to charges, older siblings read it to younger ones? The thought comes to Gerard that if he’d known Martin and Melanie all their lives, truly all their lives instead of just it seeming like it, if he’d at age six and proud of his having learned his letters found this book and sat somewhere with Martin and Melanie cuddled up on either side to read it to them, he might have doomed all three of them—or worse, just doomed the two of them and had to live with knowing he sacrificed his much-loved brother and sister to a dark force he didn’t understand. Would it have been worse if he hadn’t liked them, if he’d had the guilt of having wished they’d go away but not really meant it and then been the one to cause it?
It’s terrifying. And nauseating. Gerard puts a hand over his mouth while he struggles to come up with an answer.
Because there isn’t one, not really. Martin’s right. He can’t just keep the book, because sooner or later he’ll be tempted to read it or someone else will. If he gives it to Gerard’s mother, it won’t garner high praise and it won’t help matters. Even if she doesn’t put it up for sale, she’ll donate it to some charity shop in London, or worse, give it to a child directly, just to see what happens. And there’s not really much else they can do.
Or is there?
“Would it hurt us if we ripped all the pages out, do you think?” Melanie asks. “Just turn it into confetti? Shred it into tiny pieces and drop it all in the rubbish bin?”
“I wouldn’t put it past the Web to have printed this on something you can’t just tear,” Gerard says. “And then there’s the cover. It’s cardboard, sure, but…I don’t think even Martin’s strong enough to rip it up.” He pauses, then reaches into his inner coat pocket and pulls out the brass lighter with the eye design on it Melanie gave him for his twenty-first birthday. “But I do have this.”
“That—” Martin begins, then stops. Slowly, his hands unclench from his hair, and a smile begins to spread across his face. “That could work.”
Melanie leans over. It takes her a couple tries, and why she doesn’t just get up Gerard isn’t sure, but she manages to snag the old milk pail she picked up at the market and holds it out to Martin. “Here. Burn it in this. That way it’s controlled.”
Gerard hands the lighter to Martin as well. “You found the book. You do the honors.”
Martin takes it, opens it, and flicks the wheel twice before thumbing it to catch. The flame burns hot and steady, and he touches it to the corner of the book.
In a way that would be shocking if Gerard thought this was a regular book, it catches instantly and burns like tissue paper—or like cobwebs. Martin quickly drops the small fireball into the pail, and all three of them stare into the depths as they watch it burn to ashes.
Gerard is surprised at how good it feels.
It’s probably less than a second before it goes from flame to embers to smoke. Martin shakes the pail a couple of times, then seems satisfied the fire has gone out completely. He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment, and when he speaks, it’s quiet. “I’ll wash this out for you in a minute, Neens.”
“I’ll take care of it.” Melanie takes it from him and bangs it against the floor, then turns and hugs him fiercely. “Why the fuck didn’t we think of doing that years ago?”
“Because we were stupid kids who still thought Mum would love us if we ever managed to do something exactly right?”
“I hate that you aren’t wrong about that,” Gerard admits. He hugs Martin, too, and reaches over to hug Melanie; Martin hugs them both, and it’s a bit awkward but it feels right. They sit like that for a long time.
Finally, Gerard pulls back. “So. When Melanie comes home at half-term we’re setting Pinhole Books on fire, right?”
Martin actually laughs. He rubs his eyes with the heels of his hand. “I don’t think it’s going to be that easy, unfortunately.”
“We can dream.” Melanie smirks at Gerard. “And since you’re not busy, you can spend the time figuring out the right approach. How to do it without your mum finding out, how to make sure we don’t make things worse if there’s a Desolation book in there, if Desolation books will actually burn—”
“They’re not all fire, you know,” Gerard points out.
“—and how to make sure we don’t accidentally burn down the whole block,” Melanie continues relentlessly. “It’s not a total solution, but it’s a start, right?”
“It’s worth a try.” Martin takes a deep, slow breath, then opens his eyes and offers them a genuine smile. “Thank you. Both of you. I was afraid…I don’t know what I was afraid of.”
“We’re never going to prioritize knowledge over you,” Gerard says. “Or Leitners. Or Mum and Aunt Lily, or anyone else. And keeping the world safe…it’s a good goal. Melanie’s right, we should have thought of this years ago. But now that we have, we can do something about it.”
“Exactly.” Melanie picks up the pail and gets to her feet. “Let me go rinse this out, and then you two can help me make this place look like somewhere I can actually live in. And when we’ve done that, let’s go out for ice cream or something. I don’t feel like eating a full meal tonight.”
“Ice cream sounds good,” Martin says. He heaves himself off the futon as well. “Now then.  For the second time, where do you want that rug?”
He seems almost like himself. Almost. But Gerard watches him closely for the rest of the evening, and he can tell Martin’s still upset about the picture book.
Gerard can’t blame him.

Become an Expert on Pueblo Roofers by Watching These 5 Videos
Let's speak about something that might not seem all that attractive at first-- roofs. Particularly, let's chat about Alma Roofers Colorado and a little company called Denver Roofers that's got you covered, literally.
So, picture this: it's a sunny, crisp early morning in Denver. You're drinking on your coffee, maybe taking in the mountain views, when you observe something ... odd. A shingle hanging loose, or worse, a leakage dripping into your kitchen area. Oh boy. It's time to contact the pros. Enter Denver Roofers, your regional knights in shining armor ( fine, perhaps not knights, however certainly life-savers).
Tumblr media
Now, roofs in Colorado deal with some quite distinct obstacles. We're discussing everything from blistering sun to heavy snowfalls. You understand that sensation when you go out of a shop in winter and get smacked in the face with a gust of icy wind? Your roof feels that too. And it's not simply the weather. Oh no, my friend, we've got hailstorms that can make a grown man weep. Think of golf balls drizzling down from the sky. Yeah, roofs here require to be tough.
Denver Roofers get this. They know that your roof isn't simply a bunch of shingles slapped together. It's your home's first line of defense. Whether you need a minor repair work or a entire new roof, these folks have actually got your back. They deal with whatever-- dripping roofs, missing out on shingles, storm damage, you name it.
youtube
Let me tell you a story. My cousin Bob, who lives in Aurora, had this old roof that looked like it had actually made it through the Battle of Gettysburg. Every time there was a storm, he 'd be up there with a pail, cursing under his breath. Finally, he called Denver Roofers. They came out, examined the circumstance, and informed Bob that his roof was generally held together by hopes and dreams. Within a week, he had a brand-new roof. No more containers, say goodbye to cursing (well, not about the roof, anyhow).
However it's not practically emergencies. Preventative maintenance is crucial. I keep in mind reading someplace-- probably among those homeowner ideas sites-- that frequently examining your roof can extend its life by years. Think about it like going to the dental professional. You would not avoid your check-ups, right? (I mean, I do, however I'm informed it's a bad idea.) Denver Roofers can come out and give your roof a checkup, catching little issues before they become huge headaches.
Colorado's weather condition doesn't simply demand durability; it calls for the best materials, too. Asphalt shingles are popular, sure, however they've got choices like metal roofs that can endure hail better. Metal roofs can be noisy in the rain, however. Ever heard rain on a tin roof? It's like a symphony of marbles. However hey, some folks love that noise. It's everything about what works for you.
Here's a amusing thing. When I was a kid, I used to think roofing was all about simply slapping on some shingles and calling it a day. Turns out, there's this entire science behind it. Ventilation, insulation, slope. Did you know that the angle of your roof can affect how well snow slides off it? I didn't. Denver Roofers did, however. They'll geek out about roof slopes and R-values (that's insulation talk) so you do not need to.
Speaking of snow, let's not forget those attractive but potentially problematic ice dams. They appear like something out of a vacation card, however they can damage your roof. Picture this: snow melts, water diminishes to the edge of the roof, refreezes, and bam! Ice dam. Water backs up and can seep into your home. Denver Roofers can install things like ice and water shields to keep that from occurring. It's like providing your roof a winter coat.
Now, you might be believing, "This all noises expensive." And yeah, quality roofing isn't low-cost, but neither is changing your living room ceiling after it collapses from water damage. (Trust me, that's not a fun surprise.) Denver Roofers are upfront about costs. Nobody likes those nasty surprises when you get the bill. Plus, they deal with insurer if your roof's been struck by one of our legendary hailstorms. It's a bit of a dance, handling insurance coverage, but these guys know the actions.
Let's circle back to that sunshine we get so much of here. Ever considered going green with your roof? Photovoltaic panel are becoming a big thing. Denver Roofers can set you up with a roof that's prepared to support photovoltaic panels. Think of decreasing your energy bills and being eco-friendly at the same time. Win-win!
I've rambled on a fair bit, haven't I? Let's cover this up. Whether you're handling a roofing emergency, thinking of a replacement, or simply require some upkeep, Denver Roofers are the folks to call. They're experienced, friendly, and they get the job done right. So next time you're staring at a leak or stressing over that next huge storm, keep in mind there's a team in Denver ready to assist.
Alright, I'm off to inspect my own roof now ... or maybe I'll simply have another cup of coffee and call the specialists. Stay safe and keep that roof over your head in top shape!

Filling machines: indispensable and vital equipment in Pharmaceutical sector
Tumblr media
The role of filling machines in the pharmaceutical sector is quite vital and owing to the utilisation, the machines apparently necessitate certain mandatory constraints during the process of packing.  While most of the safety measures relate to the process of filling, the liquid filling machine is one such machine that necessarily requires proper operational environments and equally good maintenance. And most important of all the fillers or the filling machines must be well protected, sanitised and be absolutely free of microbial contamination. Of all the sectors that use fillers to pack their end products excepting food and beverage, pharmaceutical industry is one such sector that demands a high level of hygiene as well, since the end product either will be used for prophylactic purposes or therapeutic purposes, curing a disease, or fight against any infectious conditions. In a nut shell most of the pharmaceutical products are meant for human and animal consumption whether in liquid or solid / tablet form and hence the condition of the filling machine must have a very high level of cleanliness and aseptic condition. The sterile conditions that are exercised on a typical pharmaceutical filling machine is done in order to ensure that the end product or the pharmaceutical preparation does not become contaminated in any way.
Apart from the superficial requirements like maintaining a sterile environment and so on, there are certain other precautions that the filling machines call for. For instance, the pathway in which the product passes through into the container must provide an absolutely even surface thereby averting any product build up and must enable easy cleaning, leak protection and of course external contamination. To achieve this suitable material must be properly chosen. In this regard stainless steel is the metal of choice since the chances of corrosion and rusting is quite less in comparison to the other metals. The next aspect is the tubing in the machinery, wherever possible there are steel tubes fitted but in certain areas flexible pipes must be used, and in order to achieve the necessary performance. Another aspect that should be noted in these filling machines is that these machines use rinse media like water or other permitted liquid cleansers to clean the containers before filling the product. This removes any debris build-up inside the container thereby protecting the container alongside and preventing any possible contamination. Alongside the usual features that the fillers comprise, in the recent years contemporary technology has paved the way for innovations to be included into the existing features to improvise the performance. Companies like Feigeasia in Singapore have been one of the pioneers in the supply and servicing of filling machines. Being an active member of the Haver & Boecker Group and Feige Filling GmbH, Feigeasia has been a leading manufacturer of filling equipment & machines, known for speed, reliability and precision. Feigeasia has a range of fillers for filling liquid and pasty products in container types such as pail filling, cans, drums, conveyor systems or IBC and much more.

↳ @tanjodos queried: The sun emerged from under the dark clouds showing its beauty. Unfortunately, here where they were, the sun was nothing but something that people lacked. People living in the lower parts of Midgar could only dream of the sun. So warm and so necessary for everything to grow and flourish. Still the heavy drops continued to crash on the roof of the church unable to leave them alone in silence. " The sun is what meets me every day. Reminding me that my journey is not over. " Genesis' melodious voice escaped from under his lips, and he immediately crouched down next to the gently tumbling flowers resting his hand on one palm. " How is it possible that just in this church your flowers are blooming so uncommonly beautiful. Just look how the warm rays touch the petals. I could stare for hours at something so... innocent. '
Tumblr media
------SHE'D BEEN LONG used to the artificial sun that dictated the time of day for those beneath the plate. her memory did not serve the real thing, in the brief moments she'd seen it as a child. while many in the slums cursed living beneath the metal sky aerith often found solace in it - it never changed, the timers were always down to the millisecond and in the rare instance that they needed servicing she could muse at the shinra workers in their fancy tools and machines doing their work.
and she liked when it rained. if it was this rough on the weak roof of her church it meant that, topside, it was torrential. there was something calming about the sound of it ---away from home, where the rush of the waterfall beside her home drowned everything out. she was not above admitting that she'd fallen asleep here more than once, when these kinds of storms happened, where the trickle-down was enough to make a sort of cadence aerith likened to breathing.
she was not sorry for the company. it was not the first time someone had appeared to keep hers, either. from her place across the patch of flowers aerith tendered ---pulled unwanted, choking green from the delicate blooms. every so often she'd disappear to the bowels of the church to collect water in a pail, return to disperse it evenly in the dirt. she liked when it rained because it made her self-appointed chores easier. and his voice was soothing ---symphonic, gentle, made for telling stories she thought ... it was not hard to listen. every so often she peered up at him, watched the way he revered the flowers in the church ---as if he understood their importance.
" i like to think of it as tiny miracles. " despite shinra's best attempts at killing the planet, it continued to survive. they drained the lifestream from it like a barnyard animal being bled after slaughter, and yet it refused to yield to the heavy machinery that was plugged into it. she could feel it, alive, beneath her. here, in this place formerly sacred, she felt the most connected to the cries, the hum, the speech of the planet. it pulsed, radiated, and gave life to the very blooms they both poured over now. " someday ... maybe they'll see the real sun. but for now, they seem content, don't they? "
pretty little wishes. she was full of them.

Happy Industrial Design Day! Industrial design—the practice of optimizing the function, value, and appearance of products—is a central component in America’s culture of consumerism as well as the source of many beautiful objects now in the collections of leading art and history museums.
Industrial Design Day  first entered into the U.S. Congressional Record in 2015, marks the anniversary of the founding of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the result of a merger of several industrial design societies on March 5, 1965. As the home to a number of significant twentieth-century collections that chronicle the evolution of the concepts, products, and processes specific to industrial design, this is one of our favorite not-a-holiday holidays, so we’re preparing a little festive toast.
Tumblr media
The images you see here are selections from selections from a scrapbook in our collection of Marc Harrison papers (Accession 2193) that also contains advertisements, photographs, news clippings, corporate documents, and various items related to the German chemist, inventor, and designer Dr. Peter Schlumbohm (1896-1962). Schlumbohm’s papers were preserved by Marc Harrison (1936-1998), who augmented them with additional clippings related to Schlumbohm, and his own photographs of Schlumbohm's products during the 1970s.
Schlumbohm is best known for his most iconic creation; the 1941 Chemex coffeemaker. But he was a prolific creator, and eulogized as a designer whose work offered “a synthesis of logic and madness”. Schlumbohm was also a savvy and active marketer of his work, known to gift Chemex coffeemakers to U.S. presidents, celebrities, and other popular tastemakers. The coffeemaker, as well as other designs launched under the Chemex Corporation and Mixarium Company umbrellas, like the Fahrenheitor line of cocktail party accoutrements, were also prominently featured in contemporary advertisement, trade shows, and international expositions. The above photograph shows a Chemex coffeemaker, Farenheitor Decanter, Farenheitor Bottle Cooler, and what is probably a Farenheitor Glass Kettle. The Farenheitor Cocktail Shaker, Tubadipdrip, Cocktail Freezer, Metal Kettle, and Cinderella Garbage Pail, five other popular designs, are not pictured. Below, you can see a selection of mushroom-trays designed to partner with various Farenheitor products.
Tumblr media
Other products documented by this collection include the Chemobile, a radically simplified boxy compact car that was the antithesis of the low-slung, voluptuous American cars of the period, the "Pre-vue" color-correcting mirror, a German water pump, and mobile refrigeration units. i’d LOVE to hear more about your borrower au!
Oh, okay then! Thanks for the interest! :D (Putting it under a cut because it ended up being WAY longer than I thought...)
There isn’t a whole lot to it. I just have a very basic idea of what could happen. Partly because I’ve only played through the beginning of Half-Life one (I attempted to stream it, but my internet connection isn’t strong enough). Everything I know about the series comes from cultural osmosis.  When I finally play the games all the way through I’ll have a better idea of things that could happen in the AU. For now what I have is... Barney is a third or fourth generation Borrower who lives inside of Black Mesa.  A long time ago some Borrowers were kidnapped and experimented on by the company, but some escaped and managed to hide long enough to start families and such.  Barney has never seen anything outside of the facility. As far as he knows, the whole world is concrete and steel and hiding from giant creatures that WILL cut you up or torture you if you are caught.  As far as most of the humans in Black Mesa know, Borrowers are just this funny little story people tell to freak out the new guys. “Yeah there’s totally tiny rat people running around in the vents. It’s true! My friend Dave’s friend Tom saw one once! Some kind of messed up experiment that got loose.” New guys tend not to believe it. People who have been around long enough to know what kind of shady stuff Black Mesa is into are a bit less skeptical. Very few people have ever actually SEEN one though. These Borrowers are next level paranoid. (Totally justified) Barney is living on his own. It’s safer to live alone or in very small groups. Less chance of taking other Borrowers down with you if you are caught.  He’s claimed a few offices as his territory and scavenges for scraps in them. Mostly I think he eats those gross cockroaches that are always running around (safer to hunt than to steal) but when he needs something non food related, the offices are where he goes.  Gordon is fairly new to the company. He recently graduated from MIT, and is currently working on a big project (you know the one).  He’s temporarily staying in the level three dormitories just so he can basically run off to have a shower and a snooze before getting right back to work every day. Once the project is over, he’ll return to commuting from home. He’s heard the stories about Borrowers, but Dr. Kleiner assures him it’s just a prank people like to pull, so Gordon puts it out of his mind pretty immediately.  One day Barney sneaks into one of the offices to snag some rubber bands (INVALUABLE stuff). This scientist seems to work very long hours, but he’s pretty sure they’ve left for the night. While he’s climbing up his rope to get back into the vent, he gets spooked by the sound of a giant human opening the door.  Barney has never in his life been seen by a scientist, and in his panic, accidentally slips and gets his leg tangled in his own rope. He’s trapped right out in the open at the mercy of some mad scientist! Gordon isn’t a mad scientist, but he sure is a surprised one when he returns to his office with a fresh coffee in hand and finds a tiny man on his desk.  Is he seeing this because he’s been working to hard? Had to much coffee? Hasn’t seen the sun in weeks? But no mater how long he stands in the doorway blinking stupidly, the tiny man is still there.  Barney feels like he’s going to drop dead at any moment, but he tries his best to at least LOOK calm in the face of death.  He gingerly lifts a hand a waves. “Uh, h-hey Doc.” He says with a wobbly smile. “Uh... Hi... tiny... man on my desk?” (Yeah Gordon talks in my AU) Gordon approaches, still in shock, and when Barney flinches back violently, he flinches too. Gordon gently untangles Barney from the rope and introduces himself. With no immediate means of egress, Barney feels like the only thing he can do is chat with the giant, trying to keep things light and friendly. No need to get the scalpels and the cages.    Gordon is of course curious as heck, and whatever he was supposed to be working on is completely shoved to the side in favor of talking with Barney all night.  Much to both of their surprise (Barney’s more than Gordon’s) they actually end up really enjoying each others company. They share a granola bar from Gordon’s desk (one of the best things Barney has every eaten) and a bit of coffee (Not good at all, but not the worst thing he’s been forced to drink). Over time, Barney finds himself coming back to visit the weird human whenever he’s alone in the office.  Gordon is very concerned about Barney’s diet. He eats cockroaches and scraps from the garbage? When was the last time this man had a vegetable? (Barney: What the hell’s a vegetable? What’s a fruit? Are you swearing at me?)  These discussions leads to other troubling revelations. Barney is in constant danger. He’s never been outside of the facility. He doesn’t even know there IS an outside! Gordon’s heart is thoroughly broken on the borrowers behalf, and he offers to take Barney with him when he goes home at the end of the month. Barney doesn’t exactly understand, because he thought humans just lived in the dorms. But the more Gordon talks about the outside, the more Barney is captivated by the idea.  It is absolutely 100% insane, but... But maybe he could live in a house with Gordon? Not have to worry about hiding. Not have to worry about starving. Get some of that fresh air he’s been hearing about.  It takes a little while, but eventually Barney caves, and the two start excitedly planning for the big move.  First Gordon has to finish his project, and Barney has to pack up everything he owns (which isn’t too much, but still a job).  On the day of the big test, Barney is waiting in Gordon’s office, filled with anxiety and excitement.  He waits... And waits... And waits... The lights flicker. Is something wrong with the power? Is... was that a scream he just heard out in the hall? Was that a gunshot?! What’s happening out there? Is Gordon okay? Barney decides maybe it would be safer if he waited for Gordon back in the vent. But just as he’s about to climb in, he hears something huge scuttling through the metal tunnel.  Suddenly a... THING bursts out of the vent and lands clumsily on the desk in front of him, scattering giant pieces of paper filled with Gordon’s writing, and shattering the desk lamp.  He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s staring at a headcrab that has been following his scent all through the ventilation system. (Do headcrabs have noses? I don’t know. But it tracked him somehow)  Barney runs and the creature goes crashing after him. Barney is forced to dive for the floor (not a deadly fall for a borrower, considering their incredibly light bodyweight. But still scary!) He’s backed into a corner while this unnatural thing closes in on him. He’s going to die. He’s going to die and he’ll never see Gordon again and they’ll never escape this place and- A figure bursts through the door, covered head to toe in some kind of armor. It races forward, crowbar in hand, and swings at the creature, smacking it away from the cowering borrower. The figure slam it’s weapon into it again and again, long after it’s stopped moving. All that is left is a pile of twisted flesh and yellow viscera.     The towering figure then turns to Barney, and his heart is suddenly trying to claw it’s way up his throat.  He stands to run, but it’s too late. Swiftly, roughly, a giant gloved hand reaches down and snatches the Borrower up. The glove is covered in alien gore, but that is the least of his worries. He can’t tell who the human is behind the heavy helmet, and even if he could, he can barely breath for fear, let alone speak.  The figure examines him, then walks over to the desk and sets him down carefully.  The figure falls heavily into the seat, and with arms that suddenly look too heavy for it, lifts the helmet off its head.  There in front of the borrower sits Gordon Freeman. Pail, sweaty, shaking, and so, so relieved that Barney is alive. He’s seen a lot of people die today, and was nearly sick with the idea that Barney might be among them.  Their plan has been complicated. Leaving Black Mesa isn’t going to be as easy as just hiding in Gordons pocket and walking out the door. Now they are going to have to fight their way out.  In game mechanics don’t translate very well to real life, and I don’t think the HEV suit actually has pockets and holsters that let you carry tons of weapons and stuff. I think they settle on having Barney ride along with him inside the helmet. It’s not super safe (and I imagine it would be pretty gross what with the sweat and everything) but it’s the best option they have.  That’s all the story I’ve got. I’m not sure how it ends, or if/how we get to HL2 from this, but still. Maybe at the end they just get to go home and live a peaceful life together away from Black Mesa. That would be nice. =p   So, uh... Yeah! That’s the idea so far. ^__^;;

Two brown paper wrapped parcels, one atop the other, awaited Edith when she walked into the chilly kitchen on the morning of 05 September.
She stood in the doorway for a moment, peering curiously in at the boxes, wondering whether there had been a mis-delivery and they should have gone to the shop next door.
Prolonging her own anticipation, Edith shrugged out of her coat and crossing the room, hung it from the hook in the corner. She collected a few crisp dry logs from the dented metal pail near to the stove and began loading them into the stove’s clean firebox.
She bent and touched a lit match to the fluffy kindling she’d stuffed between the split logs and after a few bursts from the bellows  the fire roared to life. Satisfied, Edith knocked the heavy stove door shut with the tip of her boot. Dusting her hands together, she turned nervously to the parcels waiting on the table.
The top one was thin and rectangular and the bottom one was chunky and square. Both were carefully wrapped with clean white twine.
This was hand delivered straight from the shop, she thought examining the fresh ink stamp that boasted the name of the establishment and noting the lack of crinkles and dings and nicks in the paper that generally happened when the post got their harried hands on things.
The rising heat from the stove warmed the backs of her skirts and Edith stood motionless for a moment, her mind ticking through a list of what could possibly be in the packages. Excitement rose in her, tickling little butterflies in her belly. She pressed both hands eagerly across her belted midsection like a little girl waiting for Christmas and allowed herself to smile.
Just as she reached for them, one of the shop workers poked her head round the door jamb and giggled.
‘I see your birthday has come early, Edith,’ she said, her eyes greedily on the two parcels.
Edith snatched her hands away from the boxes as if she’d been suddenly discovered in the midst of doing something illicit. She gave the woman a nervous smile and turned round to fetch her apron.
‘My birthday has already passed,’ Edith sang over her shoulder, hands busily working to tie the efficient knot in the apron strings.
‘Then,’ cooed the woman, slinking like a coy cat into the warming kitchen, ‘you, my love, have a secret admirer.’
Secret admirer.
The words increased the fluttering of the butterflies, but ever the private woman, Edith tossed an affectedly curious glance back at the parcels on the table.
‘Oh, well, I wish,’ she lied. ‘But I was expecting these package… it’s… ahh… something I ordered. They’ve finally arrived.’
The woman’s face fell and it was exactly the reaction Edith wanted.
‘Oh,’ she said, the corners of her mouth drooping into a disappointed half-moon.
Edith watched her eye the parcels and knew more questions would be hot on her tongue, if she didn’t intervene.
‘Would you be so kind as to have John cut more wood?’
Edith picked up the wood pail, dumped out the remaining logs onto the floor and handed the pail to the woman.
The woman’s eyes slid from the parcels to the sooty pail and with a sigh, she grabbed it by the handle.
‘If I can find him,’ she said, sounding put upon and Edith made a shooing motion with her hands.
Edith followed her to the kitchen door,  pulled it closed and locked it to preserve her privacy.
The parcels taunted her and she realised that her palms were moist and her hands trembled a little.
Secret admirer.
She tumbled the possibility over in her mind.
The idea of one was tantalising, but it was rare that she was in the company of enough gentlemen to have captured the attention of one. Wiping her hands on her apron, she approached the table, and decided to open the larger of the two boxes first.
She carefully unknotted the twine for later use and unpicked the dollop of adhesive that held the brown paper flaps closed. When the paper fell open, she saw a plain brown box. Working the top off of the box she gasped when she saw the contents.
Carefully she lifted out a delicately ornate red and blue patterned teapot. Placing it reverently on the rough and stained table top seemed like sacrilege, but it was the only place to put it for the moment. Glancing back into the box she saw two heavily wrapped lumps that turned out to be a pair of matching teacups and saucers.
Edith staged the teapot in between the two seated teacups and pulled out one of the chairs to sit down in front of the scene to admire the items.
‘So beautiful,’ she murmured, tracing a finger along the handle of the pot. ‘Who would send such a thing?’
She pulled the second parcel close and knew immediately that it was a book. She unwrapped it less carefully and was distracted when a clean white card fell into her lap.
‘The Englishwoman’s Review,’ she read the book title aloud and turned the card over to read the neat script.
‘Knowledge is power and power can be dangerous. I trust you to keep both safe.’
Yours Respectfully,
Sherlock Holmes.
So, she thought with a pleased smile. Sherlock Holmes lived up to the free thinker that he touted himself to be because the book he’d gifted her was something his own brother would have her arrested for.
Edith went into her office and found a clean sheet of mailing paper upon which she wrote:
Dear Mr S. Holmes,
Please do come round to the shop for a slice of rose cake and a cup of tea. I have just now come into possession of an immaculate tea set and would like to christen it. This is an open invitation to be used at your leisure
Kindest Regards,
Miss E. Grayston.
She folded it, stamped it and when John finally turned up, carrying the wood pail into the kitchen, she ordered him to scrub his hands and hurry to deliver a special letter to Baker Street.

Been busy with winter prep all week and I'm so tired, even a bit sore. Because winter is coming early, a trend I noticed way back in 2012, there's a mass buy out of essentials everywhere, namely wood, gas, and generators. My 7 year old generator finally bit the dust but I couldn't find any at my local store so I had to order one online, it should be coming tomorrow. Throughout the week we've been deep cleaning the house, the reason being that the house is usually open for much of the summer so dust accumulates, cooking smells build up, and the places that get touched often like door handles, light switches and counter edges can get accidentally neglicted during normal cleaning. We checked the chalking and seals on the doors and window, inside the fireplace chimney, and cleared the firepit outside to prepare it for bonfire season. I brought a metal pail from Caroline's and I plan on using it as a second grill for anything from seafood to sweet potatoes. Anything that cooks better with ashes instead of direct fire.
We also took out our entire stock of food, getting rid of anything stale and expired, things we didn't eat or like, and making lists of what we need to buy more of before the blizzards come. Anything unopened that we don't eat gets put in a donation box, or in our case, three boxes, and gets sent to the local reservation, which we made a trip to by that evening. We do this so often people already know us by name in the office. Lol. They had a surplus of corn, rice and squash this year, so we were welcome to take a box with us. Our box had three butternut squash, blue corn, and three bags of wild rice. To add to this, we bought two spaghetti squash in front of a house that was also selling fry bread. All this felt like had done some grocery shopping coming back home.
Yesterday the gas company came to fill our tank though it took a bit longer than usual to get to us, my shipment of firewood is always preordered by September so no issues there but my bro and I still have to unload it ourselves which can take awhile, plus we had to unload my mom's shipment at Caroline's and by then we were both exhausted. I actually felt a bit sick afterward. I forget that my blood pressure drops after a lot of activity. Usually chilled water and a seaweed cracker helps get me back to normal. I'm relaxing today, just doing light cleaning of my room, really airing it out, and bringing out my winter clothes. Tonight I might do some crafts, not sure what exactly, I'm leaning toward beadwork or making more beeswax wraps for food prep. Not sure what I want to eat for dinner yet, but I'm feeling like mushroom and wild rice soup? Eh.
There's still a few things I need to do, but the major ones are out of the way now. We still have a month before we start getting real snow, a lot of the mountains here are already snowcapped but there's nothing in the valley yet. This worries me. Normally our summers and autumns are long but they've been gradually shortening, last year the winter did not want to let us go well into May! Climate change is all I think of. It hasn't been all bad though, our rivers and lakes have never been so full, the forest and even parts of the desert have never been so lush, and the summer was actually comfortable for many people. I'm grateful to that. Don't know what winter will bring, hopefully we don't get too buried out here.
