Okay one episode of Merlin I think DOESN’T HAVE NEARLY ENOUGH FICS is 4x08 Lamia. Why doesn’t it have more fics?????? THERE WAS SO MUCH LEFT UNRESOLVED

The hurt/comfort material is THERE. The knights were so MEAN to Merlin (and Gwen but mostly Merlin) and we didn’t see ANY of the aftermath. The dude would have been lowkey traumatized and betrayed by his friends AND I NEED MORE FICS OF THE AFTERMATH. I WANT HURT COMFORT I WANT APOLOGIES I WANT ANGST WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR GET ON THIS GUYS

The main reason im making this post at all is bc I’ve read all the fics that have the episode tagged on ao3. PLEASE.

s04e08: Lamia

Episode AU where Gwen is also under the Lamia‘s influence and Merlin has to fight the monster alone as he endures the treatment of the knights and Gwen. But this time Arthur shows up earlier and seems strangely unaffected. Eventually Merlin figures out that it’s because Arthur was born of the high priestess’s magic, somewhat similar to the Lamia, while they try to save their friends.

Elyan was the first to realise. 

"Gwen?" He rode forward and brought his horse into step beside his sister.

"Yes, Elyan?"

She looked at him cautiously. He was staring down at his right hand, and she noticed he'd removed his glove. It took him a few seconds to raise his head and face her.

"What happened to Merlin?" 

Gwen felt her chest constrict at once because though Elyan and each of the knights had already asked her that same question that morning, none had done so with the expression her brother wore on his face now. Like he already knew the answer. She bit her lip and her eyes flicked from Elyan's face to his hand and back. There were grazes along his knuckles. Elyan saw her glance at the grazes and looked even more stricken than before.

"Gwen, how did I get these?"

Freya. She's not exactly one-off but I so so desperately wish she played a bigger part.

Because, c'mon. SHE'S THE DAMN LADY OF THE LAKE.

Magic beautiful water cat woman who guards the gates to death.

She deserves more than just being a mysterious hand who held and caught a sword. And Merlin deserved to have a secret water wife (i also love Freylin <33). Just think of the many possibilities and plots that could have happened. Just- just imagine. This is why i'm depressed.

I told this to @tireddruid in conversation once and put it in one of my fics too, but I believe that after the Lamia incident, Gwaine woke up in the middle of the night after being recovered from what the Lamia did to him and then realized what he had done to Merlin. So he immediately went to Merlin's hut in the village they were staying in and just. starting crying. Silently and hard, beside Merlin's bed, full of remorse because damn it Gwaine's whole concept was that nobility came from the heart, not by blood. And what he did under the Lamia's spell wasn't noble at all.

Besides that, Merlin was his friend. The first person who took him to his home - gave up his own bed - to look after him while he was heavily drunk and barely capable of standing without support and didn't resent or rob him after that. Merlin was kind, caring, loyal and never - never - deserving of that kind of treatment or close to it. He was his first friend. He was why he became a knight. He was why Gwaine risked his neck to protect a noble and a royal. He was why Gwaine enteres the lands of hell. He was why Gwaine jumped into a battle against an undead army. Simply because Merlin asked. Simply because Merlin cared for him without cost when no one else did and wanted him to stay.

Who would want to lose a treasure of a friend like that?

Merlin then woke up 30 minutes later to find the crying mess of a knight and immediately knew that whatever doubts he had been having about the knights since the Lamia was untrue and Gwaine (and later the others too) would never willingly hold him in that regard. They fortunately didn't harm him too much, and it would take a while for Merlin to not flinch every time any of the knights made sudden movements towards him, but he would recover. And he would remember, just why he decided to befriend them.

Agh. I thought about this one. And I don't particularly think much about characters beyond the main ones unless they relate to a plot of mine.

But one thing I assumed (but the show never confirmed) is that Merlin is quite popular among the servants.

I mean, does anyone remember Tyr Stewart? The guy evil!Gwen killed? He was outright threatened with death and his mother too, the poor man was traumatized and scared and anxious. Yet, he opened up to Merlin after some coaxing.

I don't think just anyone would open up to a random stranger, even in a higher power with the potential to end your life (cuz Merlin is tge manservant to the king), and trust them with information regarding yours and your loved one's lives. But he did with Merlin.

And this just proves to me that Merlin is in fact quite popular and friendly with the servants and patients and other commoners. The cook hates him, hey, but none of the other servants snitched on him when he snagged a pastry or dumpling or two. Especially not after Merlin sneaked them a piece ;)

I think about the Lamia episode SO much.

First off, we get so much good solid Gwen and Merlin friendship. They're solving a mystery together!

Gwen is like "oops sorry all our friends got hypnotized by a creature of magic. Luckily my gay bff is here with me"

Merlin "I'm not......I just already have a monster GF"

Gwen "no there's something about you....."

Merlin "and also yes I'm gay"

PLUS Merlin almost reveals his magic to her! At the end he is ready to reveal his biggest secret to her to save their lives. He very nearly trusted her with it.

On top of all that we get to see competent physician Merlin.

Love the Lamia episode. Top 10 fr.

lamia to me remains the most underused and misunderstood episode. I don't at all see it as 'merlin gets abused angst' as he.. truly doesn't look scared of the knights at all. Just bothered, angry, frustrated. he tolerates the behavior because he doesn't want them to die and wants to figure lamia out, and when pushed around and threatened his frame cowers but eyes remain strong and there's promise behind them. he may not be able to physically overpower them but he's always been the most powerful person in the room make no mistake.

and then there's the tension between merlin and lamia that feels stronger than other beings of magic. merlin is a dragonlord, a dragon man. standing against serpent woman. the high priestesses are still women, but merlin is a true being of magic unlike the other strongest magic users shown.

I need more exploration of merlin becoming almost territorial when lamia shows up. his friends may act enchanted but they are under the dragon's protection and no serpent is going to threaten them. lamia stares at him like he's the enemy and he stares hatered at her right back.

his reaction to gwaine being enchanted should've also been different to the others. he's not knight, he's His knight. I don't think merlin even was actual friends with the others lol. but even then, his friendship with gwaine detoriated sadly by season 4.

but season 3 gwaine getting enchanted? or arthur? or lancelot? merlin would deserve to fucking growl or make other threatening reptile noises let him show his not-fully-human side more often let him act like creachurre
