My mom has Mercury in Pisces (°27 Gemini) in the 10th house. She thought my dad was funny, but there was something about his energy that was reliable, a lot of clients trusted him the most when he was working as a driver. Considering the circumstances of how they met, she was a bit weary of him but he was genuinely a good person. Surprisingly gentle, that's what she told me.

What does it mean if it's in retrograde?

You can be quite unsure about your person at times, they may display erratic changes or— you have a completely different opinion of them from when you met vs. after getting to know them.

I have Mercury in Scorpio (°16 cancer), in the 12th house. I will think that my FS is confusing at first. As I get to know him, I'll think that he's a kindhearted person with a slightly more intense aura to him. Someone misunderstood, and someone I might have misjudged as well. I'll think that he's quite sentimental and softhearted, but I still can't shake that fear in the back of my mind; I guess I'll leave that for him to deal with. I don't want to assume too much about him. I want to hear from his own mouth in regards to who exactly he is.

This could indicate having quite some boundaries up, the inability to open up right away, and being protective over yourself. This meeting can also happen in a very emotional period your life, or a period where the "mother" archetype is pretty prevalent, whether it's you or someone else very close to you. This could be at home, or somewhere where you feel comfortable. A place/time without rush or aggression or a lot of movement. This person might look straight into what you had been feeling. Solar Return Observations (Part Two)

Hi everyone, I decided to make a part two since people appreciated the 1st post. If you are interested to see what’s likely to occur for you in your life from one year to the next, the link to purchase a reading is in my bio :)

An afflicted Neptune in the 11th house of a Solar Return can indicate friendship troubles in the year. It’s not uncommon to lose friends or lose a friend in such a year.

Solar Return Moon in the 12th house can be a very emotionally difficult year (especially if the moon receives many squares from the other planets). However, I find that most people become interested in Astrology or spirituality when their Solar Return Sun, Moon, or Mercury is in the Solar return 12th house.

It’s common to begin therapy when you have your Solar Return Mercury in the 8th house. I had a client of mine begin DBT sessions when she had her Solar Return Mercury in her 8th house (she gave me permission to share this information for anyone who may be concerned).

When your Solar Return Sun makes a conjunction to Venus, this can be a very social year for you. Especially if this conjunction occurs in the 3rd, 5th, or 11th houses.

There’s the inclination to attract unfulfilling romantic unions or relationships that are hard to make work when you have your Solar Return Venus opposite the Solar Return Saturn. If you are already in a relationship, you may find that certain responsibilities and obligations are pulling you in the opposite direction of that relationship. Thus, a lot of compromise and conscious effort on your part is required during that solar return year. Some astrologers argue that Venus opposite Saturn can indicate a break up, but I’ve honestly seen that more with Venus square Saturn or Venus square Uranus in the Solar Return chart.

My personal finances changes drastically (for the better) when I had my Solar Return Pluto in the 2nd house. However, I must say I had my Solar Return Venus in the 8th and Jupiter In the 11th too. Furthermore, my solar return Ascendant was the sign over my natal 2nd house cusp. Hence, finances were a major theme for me this particular year.

When the ruler of your solar return midheaven is in the 9th. You may be required to travel for work. It can also mean that your work may involve some form of learning or exposure to certain things that expand your worldviews.

In terms of your mental state during the year, I would actually look at the condition of your 3rd house (and Mercury) first and foremost. Then the 12th, and then the 8th. If you have Saturn in the 3rd house feelings of depression or despondency can often emerge. This is especially true if Saturn receives many squares. Uranus in the 3rd can cause feelings of restlessness and in some cases anxiety. If you want to look at your emotional state I would look to the condition of the Moon, 4th, and 12th house.

A solar return year where you have Venus conjunct Mars can be a year in which you experience an increase in your sex drive and general appeal. You’ll be radiating an aura that other people find hard to ignore. Attracting more sexual or romantic partners is also a possibility in such a year. (Whether these are long-term partners need to be determined by looking at the overall condition of Venus and the solar return 7th house) you also need to take note of your transits and to a lesser extent to progressions.

When your Solar Return Ascendant is in the same sign as your Natal Ascendant this can be a significant year for you, when it comes to your physical appearance and your personality. People often see you in a “different light” in such a year. You may be making the conscious effort to change your look or how you present yourself to others. Even if this change is not blatant, people will often notice a difference in your appearance and your outward persona/mannerisms.

The El Paso Riot

In the hills of West Virginia, young Hasil Adkins was growing up dirt-poor, his mind filled with the sounds of Hank Williams and the burgeoning rock 'n' roll movement. Meanwhile, down in Lubbock, Texas, Norman Carl Odam was channeling his own brand of crazy. Born in 1947, Odam grew up shy and eccentric, his unique vocal style and penchant for public performance setting him apart from the crowd. He taught himself to play a slew of instruments and began crafting a persona that would come to be known as "The Legendary Stardust Cowboy." Odam's antics - playing on the roof of his car, crashing parties, and belting out his wild tunes - earned him a mix of admiration and scorn in his hometown. He set out for California with dreams of making it big, but found no takers. Undaunted, he returned to Lubbock, working odd jobs by day and tearing up the honky-tonks by night.

In 1968, inspired by Tiny Tim's appearance on The Tonight Show, Odam made a fateful decision. He pointed his car towards New York City, determined to make his own mark. But fate intervened in Fort Worth, where a chance encounter with two vacuum cleaner salesmen led to Odam's first recording session. With T-Bone Burnett at the controls, "The Legendary Stardust Cowboy" cut his debut single, "Paralyzed." The stars seemed to align when Mercury Records picked up the single for national distribution. As the '70s dawned, both Hasil and Odam found themselves adrift, their dreams of stardom fading like a desert mirage. Hasil kept recording, his songs growing more unhinged by the year, while Odam bounced from label to label, his eccentricities and unwillingness to compromise keeping him forever on the fringes.

But in that fateful year of 1975, in a dusty El Paso record shop, two shooting stars collided. Hasil and Odam, kindred spirits in the realm of the bizarre, hatched a plan to stage a concert unlike any the world had ever seen. They sweet-talked a local radio station into sponsoring the event and rented out a rodeo stadium, ready to unleash their combined madness upon an unsuspecting crowd.

Their first stop was a dingy bar on the outskirts of town, where they stumbled upon a five-piece cover band tearing through a set of classic rock standards. Hasil and Odam, never ones to miss an opportunity, sidled up to the band during their break. "Boys," Hasil drawled, his eyes gleaming with manic intensity, "we've got a proposition for you. A chance to be part of something big, something that'll go down in the history books." The band, a ragtag bunch of long-haired dreamers, looked at each other skeptically. But when Odam pulled out a wad of cash and started talking numbers, their eyes widened. "We're gonna rent out the biggest venue in town," Odam proclaimed, his voice rising with each word. "And you boys are gonna be our backup band. We'll pay you more money than you've ever seen in your lives. Just get some country western outfits. We are the Everly Brothers, after all." The band, stunned by the offer and the sheer audacity of these two strange men, hesitated for only a moment before agreeing. They were in, come hell or high water.

Next, Hasil and Odam tracked down T-Bone Burnett, the legendary producer and sound man. Burnett, intrigued by the sheer madness of their plan, signed on to handle the sound for the show.

The night of the concert arrived, and the venue was packed to the rafters. A strange electricity crackled through the air as Hasil and Odam took the stage, backed by their newfound band. They launched into a set of pure, unadulterated rock 'n' roll mayhem, their music a primal scream into the face of conformity. The crowd, a bizarre mix of cowboys, hippies, and everything in between, surged towards the stage, drawn in by the raw power emanating from the performers. They danced and thrashed, their bodies moving in a wild, chaotic rhythm.

As the night wore on, the energy in the room reached a fever pitch. The dancing turned into a frenzy of flailing limbs and gyrating hips. Beehive hairdos, carefully constructed earlier in the evening, began to unravel, hairpins flying in all directions. Makeup streamed down faces contorted in ecstasy and abandon. Fistfights broke out in the crowd, men and women grappling with each other in a strange, primal display of aggression and passion. Clothes were torn, revealing skin slick with sweat. Impromptu make-out sessions erupted in the corners of the venue, bodies intertwined in a tangle of lust and madness.

Through it all, Hasil and Odam played on, lost in their own world of sonic chaos. T-Bone Burnett, his face a mask of concentration, worked the soundboard like a mad scientist, coaxing unholy sounds from the speakers as the seven on stage found a strange synergy. As the show reached its climax, the crowd finally boiled over. The line between audience and performer blurred, and soon the stage was overrun with a mass of humanity, all moving to the same wild, pulsing beat.

The authorities, called in to quell the riot, could only stand back and watch in amazement as El Paso tore itself apart in a frenzy of rockabilly delirium. No cameras captured the madness of that night, for no one wanted to remember the time when the city lost its mind.

In the aftermath, as the sun rose over the devastation, Hasil and Odam slipped away, their mission accomplished. They had touched something primal, something dangerous, and the world would never be the same. The band, shell-shocked and exhausted, counted their money and went their separate ways, each knowing that they had been part of something truly extraordinary and inappropriate. And T-Bone Burnett, his ears still ringing from the unholy cacophony, smiled to himself, knowing that he had borne witness to a moment of pure, unbridled rockabilly history.

In the years that followed, whispers of that night would spread through the music underground, a legend passed from one generation to the next. Hasil Adkins and Norman Carl Odam, the twin prophets of rock 'n' roll insanity, had left their mark on El Paso, and the city would never forget nor speak of the night it went insane.

May I ask this? I notice that opposite signs like Aries-Libra, Leo-Aquarius, Virgo-Pisces, and Cancer-Capricorn make sense, it’s pretty obvious why they are opposite. But I have trouble distinguishing Scorpio-Taurus and Sagittarius-Gemini because these signs are almost the same to me. Scorpio-Taurus are both observant and possessive. Gemini-Sagittarius are both bright and searching for knowledge. I’ve seen a fair amount conflict between the first four pairs in my life because of their opposing characteristics (ex. heavily Aries friend constantly argues with heavily Libra friend, roommate with strong Virgo fights with roommate with strong Pisces, etc.). These last two get along so I don’t understand how they’re considered opposites?

OPPOSITIONS

I'll answer both your asks, but it might not be what you expect,. First I want to talk about oppositions. Tumblr is probably the only place that talks about "sister" signs refering to opposite signs. I don't know where that comes from, but sounds to me like some jungian thing. His "shadow". Modern "psychological", or "evolutionary", or "archetypal" astrologers really like that. I'm a Psychology student myself and I don't like mixing Jung or Psychology with Astrology.

Astrology has a very rich philosophy and world view behind it, and it's very disappointing that people don't try to figure out it's principles and instead they apply completely modern concepts to it. And it's like...

Oppositions are not "sisters", they're opposite. That doesn't mean they'll be people that never get along, neither that they will, especially because it's just the Sun sign you're talking about. Their whole chart can show so many things that make them like each other. And if they're born in the night, their Moon is much more important than their Sun.

The ascendant is the one really representing the person. No, it's not a "persona", not a "mask" you wear to other people to desguise the real you. That's a really modern psychological concept and it doesn't make sense with where astrology is coming from. Modern astrology is full of anachronistic traps like that. I might consider it a little bit whitewashing as well.

The most basic thing about Astrology is the simple hermetic principle of "As above, so below", so whatever is rising in the eastern horizon is just now being birthed and will show likeness with whatever is being birthed on Earth and vice versa. The first house is a place of spirit rising into matter, it reveals appearance and mind, body and spirit. It's where Mercury rejoices, the most human-like planet/god, who's both light and dark, male and female, diurnal and nocturnal.

Its opposite, the 7th house, however, is the place of death. I know you've heard it's the 8th, and it is, but the 8th was called by the ancient greeks as "Epicataphora", which means something like "casting down into the underworld", and it talks about the beginning and manner of death. Look at the 8th house ruler of famous people who died and you'll probably see the why and how. The 8th is called the Idle place, and by Firmicus Maternus as one of the gates of Hades, more especifically the entry gate. The 2nd house was the exit, representing riches that come from the earth. By the way, the etymology for "Hades" is "underworld" and Pluto means "riches" or "wealth". Those houses talk about what supports life or death, it's about earthly substance or loss of that. When you enter the underworld you have to leave everything behind, the body is considered only a borrowed costume and you leave it at the door.

The 7th is death because is where everything really sets and symbolically dies. Pytagoreans took from the egyptians and mesopotamians the idea that the east and west were linked to right and left respectively. Throughout the whole world, the east/right orientation was symbolic of anything good, light, beneficial, strong etc while the west/left was about giving strength to others, darkness, also a sense of union and partnership, but weakening for us, with potential harm from unknown forces, the other, the enemy. The opposite sign is where we're exiled. ¹

Oppositions are of the nature of Saturn, the original lord of death. He's the limit, separation, endings, the stranger, the unknown. Oppositions are irreconcilable differences, like black and white. If there's a little bit of white, then it's already not black anymore; if there's a little bit of black, then it's not white. There's no way you can blend the two and not loose them both. Both transmute each other into grey (keep that in mind).

But there's a way they relate. You can't see in darkness, but you can't see if there's too much light either. The Sun makes all of the other planets invisible in the sky while he shines. You can see because of its light, but in darkness you can see all the stars. Opposite signs are completely different in what they do, they come from completely opposite places, and they're going towards completely different places, but still towards one another. Cancer marks the summer solstice for the northern hemisphere, it's the longest day of the year, but from there, the Sun starts going down, towards Capricorn. Capricorn marks the winter solstice, the longest night, but from there the Sun starts going up, towards Cancer. Opposites are always of the same modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and of complementary elements (air and fire/earth and water). So they're able to affect each other from a place of confrontation, that doesn't mean they won't mingle, but when they do, we won't get them fully, we won't see black or white, or day or night; we'll see grey, or a twilight.

Am I saying "opposites attract"? Yin yang? No, but kinda. Gender norms and heteronormativity was probably a big contributing factor to the idea that you relate with your opposite (male with female), so relationships were put in the 7th house. But it's still kinda true about how relationships work, energy exchange wise. We're in front of each other, backs to opposite sides, trying to affect each other from opposite perspectives.

Marriages and relationships kinda work like enmities and we have to pay attention not to cause harm. We're always trying to figure out how to get to the other and affect them, but also how to not loose ourselves in the process, by creating boundaries. It's exactly what you do in a fight, only the kind of intention is different. Relationships are very saturnine. You're trying to get to strange territory and if you're not careful you could break or break them.

Now diverging just a little bit, I really admire Eliphas Levi's work and he talks about how love is sometimes dangerous because of "sidereal transmutation". It's the idea that by sympathy, we transform the targets of our investments. We identify ourselves with the other because of how we affect them directly and start blending our energies with them. People notice that in how couples start looking alike and behave similarly after some time together.

We act by our imagination on the imagination of others, by our sidereal body on theirs, by our organs on their organs, in such a way that, through sympathy, whether of inclination or obsession, we possess one another reciprocally and identify ourselves with those whom we wish to affect. Reactions against such dominations may cause the most pronounced antipathy to succeed the liveliest sympathy. Love has a tendency to unify beings; in thus identifying, it renders them rivals frequently, and hence enemies, if in the depth of the two natures there is some unsociable disposition like pride. To fill two united souls with pride in an equal degree is to disjoin them by making them rivals. Antagonism is the necessary consequence of a plurality of gods. ²

You're putting a lot of energy towards them, and it's really like the laws of physics to Levi, you hit a brick wall and you better believe it's going to hit you back. So you better affect them with something good. You affect them and eventually they'll show likeness to whatever you're putting out towards them. They'll transform into what you put on them, that's why relationships with parents who love to label their kids are so pervasive and toxic. Levi refers to this kind of labeling from parents as a "curse" in this chapter.

You also have to be aware of how they're affecting you, how relationships are transforming you. It's interesting how in myth, love a lot of the times happens with a transmutation and it' always a little weird and "problematic". Levi even says:

"This virtue of sidereal transmutation, which really exists in love, explains the allegorical marvels of the wand of Circe. Apuleius speaks of a Thessalian woman who changed herself into a bird; he won the affections of her servant to discover the secrets of the mistress, but succeeded only in transforming himself into an ass. This allegory contains the most hidden secrets of love." ³

Ruler of 1st house in 12th: Creates outer persona to mask fears.

Ruler of 2nd in 12th: Must overcome fear in order to make a living. Gives to charities. Wants spiritual safety net rather than monetary.

Ruler of 3rd house in 1st: The way JJ communicatescomminucates influences the way people perceive him. His communication is a big part of his personality. Siblings affect communication style.

Ruler of 4th in 11th: Family and friendship are closely intertwined, ie: family members are also friends, friendships close enough to be considered family. Family relationships influence how JJ makes friends, and who he chooses to be friends with.

Believes in soul mates, bonds with partners through arts/creative expression.

Most with this placement are intellectuals, but due to other factors in JJ’s charts (esp. the interception of Sagittarius/Gemini) this is less important to JJ’s personality.
