If you’ve ever enjoyed a webcomic where a “real world” person ends up in a fantasy world, you should give The Colliding Worlds of Mina Lee a chance. It’s a solid example of the genre while still being able to have a bit of fun with the medium itself through meta moments like Mina realizing that something big will almost definitely happen at a school dance—just because it’s a school dance, and she’s in webcomic set at a high school. A lot of tropes, events, and characters get played straight or played around with in entertaining ways, and I enjoyed Mina’s lampshading throughout.

Mina and Jin were the stars of the book, and they had a sweet, sincere webcomic romance. I enjoyed their banter and their teamwork, and Mina was a lot of fun as a narrator. I liked watching her figure out how her powers worked as the webcomic’s creator, and her commentary on genre conventions and other meta gave the story a lot of flavor. Much of the supporting cast was fairly simple, though, and I do wish there had been more time to flesh them out—especially the character that was supposed to be the hero before Mina arrived in the webcomic world.

I would consider The Colliding Worlds of Mina Lee to fall on the younger end of the YA spectrum due to its writing style and breezy pace. Some of the horror isn’t as deeply explored as I would expect in an older YA, like Mina’s powers to (accidentally) force the webcomic people to conform to her storyline or the medical/body horror inherent in the villain’s schemes. That said, the book doesn’t shy away from the heavier topics of parental loss—Mina’s mother’s death is still a significant influence on Mina and her father’s lives. I also appreciated the juxtaposition of Mina’s parents’ absences: her mother to death, but present in her art; and her father to work, but present in his worry about Mina’s future.

Recommendation: Get it soon if the premise appeals to you. Ellen Oh’s The Colliding Worlds of Mina Lee is a fun, comfortable high school adventure with a dose of entertaining meta on top. There are some places I wish had been explored more, but the novel is a solid entry in this genre. I finished the novel wanting to read more stories like it, and that’s a sign of a satisfying story.

J'étais plus jeune quand je l'ai rencontrée. Il a presque 30 ans de plus que moi. J etais un peu plus naïve qu'aujourd'hui à l'époque et vachement plus insouciante. Je venais tout juste de retomber dans la soupe, coke, tuci, parfois un peu de crack, champagne et paillettes, je roulais en merco, je gagnais très très bien ma vie bref tout etait sous controle (ou pas).

Un jour, j'ai lu dans un magasine people qu'il allait se marier ... je me suis dit "waw quelle naïveté" alors j'ai arrêté de lui parler et de regarder nos photos sur Paris...

"Stooooop!!"

With a rush of air and a flash of light, Marina Liteyears enters the scene!

"I know you're busy, but I must confront you!! Are you ready!?" Standing in the fog-covered void of what's surely just an empty storage room on the Emperor's space station, Marina looks up at the black monolith of the Emperor. With THE Beastector behind her, it's time to fight this guy.

"Ah-ha! Welcome, Marina! Let's see who brings the TRUE justice!!" The monolith floats menacingly above the floor as the voice of the Emperor explodes out of it. "I don't like those who think that THEY are justice!!"

The Emperor's monolith begins to distort in Marina's vision, seeming to turn backward and in on itself. Her biomechanical mind throws her consciousness into a void of white, as... Something tries to burrow its way in. Is this the mind control he was using on the three Beastector boys? Marina grunts, as she begins to perceive a sort of arena construct itself around her. Fog, much like that covering the floor in the real world, builds around her feet, and slabs of black metal rise from it on the edges of the room. Copies of the Emperor's monolith... Egotistical jerk, isn't he? The "real" monolith hovers above Marina, facing downward at her.

He's not... Doing anything...? Marina takes a moment to look around herself. She's standing in an arena, right? That's what this is? Isn't it? Confused, she takes some cautious steps around the center of the room. The Emperor isn't shouting at her like he always seems to be doing, so... What's happening?

Foggy bubbles begin rising from the floor, seeming to show Marina words filled with sadness and pain. Death, Evil, Sad, Enemy... Mind control by flooding the victim with negativity? Marina's heard of stranger things happening. And it makes sense. THE Beastector might have been in her way but they didn't so much seem like bad guys as wacky henchmen. And then there was what Merco said after their fight... Poor guys.

Marina yelps as a laser blast comes from above and electrocutes her. "Owowowowowow!" Her body, or at least her sense of self in this strange mental arena, flings itself backwards at one of the wall-monoliths at the edge. "Agh... My head... Oh, no, I hope my body isn't already under his control! Damn it!" She quickly collects herself and dashes around the arena, dodging the lasers as they fly down toward her. Looking up, she can see that the word bubbles are reaching the sky monolith and compressing into the bullets... Okay. Keep those from reaching him, she can do that.

Her iron grip is especially useful for grabbing and tearing the... Surprisingly fragile bubbles. That handles the projectile production, but how can she escape this? Doing something to the monolith has to be the key... Marina leaps against one of the walls and kicks off, rocket boosting up to the symbol of the Emperor in the sky.

With a loud THUNK, Marina crashes down to the ground, shaking her head. Invisible barrier in the sky. Great. Fantastic. So no fighting him directly... What can she do? If she can't reach the monolith...

The bubbles! Marina smirks. What's that old mantra she's been using for herself, this whole adventure?

Grabbing is where you must begin. Shaking for treasure from within. Throwing far is how to win!!

Hasn't failed her, yet, and it doesn't get a lot more "from within" than fighting a mind control thingy! Marina grabs one of the negativity bubbles and carefully holds it between her hands. So, if these are coming from the Emperor... She takes a breath and begins shaking the bubble, watching it turn golden as she thinks positive things at it. Life, Good, Happy, Ally!

Marina takes the golden bubble and launches it upward at the monolith. A golden blast of energy flies from her hands and crashes into it, sending it into a flipping motion with a world shaking sound of grinding gears. Red cracks begin to form in the monolith, spreading out from it and shattering the very air around it as the arena in Marina's mind shatters.

The Ultra-Intergalactic-Cybot-G leaps up past the wave of destruction, rocketing herself upward. She's almost back in the real world, now. Here she comes, Emperor!

The green-haired chore robot opens her eyes back in the unlit meeting room, immediately furrowing her brow in anger as she launches herself forward with a rocket boost to shatter the monolith with her fist.

Victory! Take that, Emperor! Your stupid ugly black rock thing is toast!
