Meramec Cave - early tourism
Real photo postcard. Entrance to Meramec Cave in Stanton, Missouri. Probably 1930s Caves have been inhabited and served as the stage for mythological tales in most cultures, past and present. Indigenous peoples used Missouri’s numerous caves for shelter long before Europeans arrived. For a century and a half after that, it was mined for saltpeter (potassium nitrate, which is used in…

Meramec Caverns: A Hike Underground
Walk into a hideout used by the notorious Jesse James bank robber and find huge multi-colored stalactites and stalagmites at Meramec Caverns. On a cold and rainy autumn day, my son and I went underground on a tour of Meramec Caverns. This one-and-a-half-hour-guided tour is 11/4 mile long and includes going up steps and a few places where you have to lower your head. Although, mostly it is wide…

Now I'm wondering how difficult it would be to convince my friends to do a cave tour with me 🤔

Note
As an unfortunate Misery resident, you're always welcome to tour the cheese caves. It's pretty much just a cellar warehouse for government-owned freedom cheese, though. I'd recommend Stark Caverns (interesting history), Crystal Cave (many chambers with large stalagmites and stalactites), or Meramec Caverns. Special mention: the Nuclear Waste Adventure Trail, a fake mountain built to trap radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project. There's also a fire under part of the landfill that's been burning for ~14 years, but it has a great view from the top (we went there as a field trip in grade school). There are several better national parks to choose from, though, and most of them won't give you cancer. Or I guess the cheese caves are still available if you really want to see American cheese in its natural habitat.
This is so unbelievably funny to me, thank you
I did NOT know you could visit the cheese caves???? Oh my god???
Also the nuclear waste tour, of course, would I even have visited the US if I didn't contract radiation? Come on now.
#ask#This is a wonderful insight anon thank you#I'll write it on my tourism board for when I visit friends in the US

Steve Harrington & Jonathan Byers’
The Great American Road Trip
Day 2. 07/22/1993. St. Louis, MO to Cuba, MO. (Day 1.)
List of songs they played in the music alphabet game before it got interrupted when Jonathan spotted a sign to a nature reserve:
Another One Bites The Dust- Queen
Bastards of Young- The Replacements
Careless Whisper- George Michael
Death or Glory- The Clash
Eternal Flame- The Bangles
Friday I’m In Love- The Cure
A couple of dashing young gentlemen, according to the server at a roadside diner.
“Yep, we’re definitely lost.”
“How?! We’re literally driving on one highway.”
“Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. We must’ve missed the exit a couple miles back.”
“So why the hell are we still driving, Steve?”
“Hey, it’s okay. So what if we’re lost? Let’s embrace it… it’s not like we have to be somewhere by the end of the day. Let’s just take it easy, okay? Who knows where we’ll end up?”
“Ugh, I hate that you’re right. It’s just… I planned this perfect road trip for us and I wanted everything to go well.”
“Aw, come on, Jonathan. We’re going on this awesome adventure together, that already makes it perfect for me. Who cares if we miss out on some roadside attractions?”
“I know, I know… let’s embrace the lost.”
Directions to Missouri Baking Co. from a friendly guy they met near the motel
Day 2: We didn’t get in a lot of mileage compared to yesterday, but still a lot of fun. We spent the morning in St. Louis, going around the neighborhoods. We tried both the gooey butter cake and the concrete (bad name) since everyone we met said we had to try them. Jonathan couldn’t finish his root beer concrete so I finished it off for him, but I think my butterscotch was better. 10/10 desserts. Then we got out of the city and continued on our journey. We escaped the summer heat in the Meramec Caverns, which had some really interesting rock formations. It’s weird. I never realized America could be this beautiful, but it’s only been two days and I’m in awe of all the natural beauty around me. We spent the better half of the afternoon exploring near Stanton. Jonathan also got footage of some cowboys that we happened to run into, so we’re both pretty happy. We’re finally staying at one of the historic motels along the old route, and Cuba is such a charming little town that honestly reminds me of Hawkins a bit. I’ve realized on this trip so far that it’s not the destination that makes the journey memorable, but all the moments in between– the sights, the mishaps, the jokes. We plan to make it to Carthage tomorrow… I hope I can find some more souvenirs to take home.

Pics: Some of Subterranea's residents.
1. Tyrannus, once a tyrannical Roman emperor. Kept young & vibrant by the Fountain of Youth!
2. Grotesk, underground nihilist wants to totally destroy the surface world...
3. Kro, Deviant scientist & secret 'lover' of the Eternal Thena!!
4. Mole Man, blind leader of the Moloids & Fantastic Four enemy!
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
Intro: Subterranea is an underground kingdom that was originally home of the Deviants.
It concists of a planet-wide network of caverns deep beneath the surface.
At Monster Island, these tunnels reach to the center of the Earth!!
Ancient Lizard Men, Lava men & many monsters call Subterranea home.
Places of special interest are the areas of Abysmia, the Fountain of Youth, the cities of Lechuguilla & Meramec, the Valley of Diamonds, etc all of them are located down here...
History: 20,000 years ago, the city of Netheria witnessed a Deviant attack on Atlantis!
The Netherians responded by enclosing their city & fortifying their foundations.
When Atlantis sank, Netheria ended up even deeper in the Earth - coming to rest in the Netherworld!
The exiled Tyrannus stumbled upon the Fountain of Youth & came to rule the Tyrannoids!!
Much later, the Mole Man took over a large part of Subterranea - with the help of his Moloids & giant monsters.
Recently, this underworld has seen the rise of the Ani-Men, Mutates & others.
The F.F., the High Evolutionary, Mister Sinister, the Frightful 4, etc have all either visited there or have used these dark depths for hidden bases.
Subterranean War - After civil war 'hit' Deviant controlled Lemuria, Kro was nowhere to be found. So, Brutus assumed the empty throne!
He began reclaiming all lands once belonging to the Deviants - including Subterranea!!
This war spilled out onto the streets of NYC. But, it turned out that these 'invaders' were actually refugees!!
Investigating, the Avengers are all captured by Brutus's forces!
Tyrannus & Mole Man get Hulk's help - by kidnapping his friends, Rick Jones & Betty Banner!!
Attacked at the Fountain of Youth, Hulk triggers a rockfall, burying it!
Once Betty & Rick are safe, Hulk empties out the last of the Fountain's water & laughs as Tyrannus tries to lick it off the dirt floor!!
Then, Tyrannus convulses & dies! Because Brutus had poisoned the Fountain's water...
Meanwhile, an aged Kala seeks out Iron Man's help. But, they're attacked by the Outcasts & Kala's kidnapped!
Iron Man's able to rescue her at the city of Netherland.
The Deviants final attack uses the high tech Oscillatron, which can shatter whole realms apart...
But, the West Coast & Great Lakes Avengers defeat the Deviant forces.
In the aftermath, it's discovered that Brutus is actually a Mutate - passing himself off for a Deviant!
So, his own Mutates rip him apart!!
Author/Artist: Created by the team of P. Gustavson & R. Gill for Marvel Mystery Comics #10 in June 1940!

I’m from Missouri. That and my love of caves made me look into this further. This reply makes me think it was Meramec Caverns since it’s the only one I know of that has Celine Dion singing at the end.
Thank you!
This is a follow-on to this post from a couple of days ago:
Still assuming this must have happened in round two during 2017, due to proximity to Atlanta (well, you know when you can get on a private plane - otherwise a 10 hour drive).
It does look like a neat place.

I found some cave pics I don’t think I ever posted. I took these last year, when I went to the Meramec Caverns.
This was a formation they called the Stage Curtain. They say it is the largest single cave formation measuring at 21 m high, 18 m wide and 11 m thick. Despite there being infinitely bigger cave formations around the world but ¯\_(ツ)_/ what do I know. Interesting fact. This is privately owned and you watch a video slideshow with someone singing God Bless America playing in the background, projected onto this hella old cave formation at the end of ur tour.
