Animal of the Day!

Reticulated Siren (Siren reticulata)

Conservation Status- Unlisted

Habitat- Southeastern United States

Size (Weight/Length)- 60 cm

Diet- Insects; Small crustaceans

Cool Facts- The reticulated siren, outside of having an awesome name, is the largest aquatic salamander. Not described until 2018, these sirens are iconic for their eel-like body and leopard-like spots. There is little known about reticulated sirens simply due to being discovered so recently. Like many species of amphibian, these salamanders are believed to be an indicator species that help to identify the health of their environment. There are future studies planned to further understand the reticulated siren’s behavior, life history, and population size. 

Rating- 13/10 (The only siren that truly matters during MerMay.)

"The creature stared at him, its eyes shifting in its skull as it scanned Lestat from his abdomen to the top of his head without blinking. Then it did the most uncanny thing… It smiled, its lips pulling back to expose its teeth, two fangs on either side of its mouth pressing into the generous bottom lip, hard enough to draw a drop of dark blue liquid that trickled down its rounded chin.

Lestat's thumb darted out on sheer instinct to wipe it away, dismissing the silent alarm that sounded deep within him. The creature leaned into his touch, its skin unnaturally cold as Lestat grazed over its skin, angling its head as its mouth closed around his fingertip, suckling him while its hypnotic gaze locked him into place. The inside of its mouth was slick and smooth, far cooler than the outside had been.

A shadow of rational thought lingered at the edge of Lestat's consciousness, urging him to look away and retreat to land.

Mermaids, sirens, the legends of Melusine. Fairy tales spoon-fed to small children by their mothers and childhood nurses as they lay spellbound in their beds. Lessons in morality, obedience, and discipline, don't give in…"

Apparently it's world eel day. It is also Mermay. So have an Eel person! Had a bit of fun with the body form this time. Based on a European eel which was seen in Sussex waters recently!

Day 24: Pistol Shrimp

I often wonder how much of our own technology is inspired by nature, and not by the "divine inspiration" so many inventor types like to brag about. When Dr. Branston told me out the Wonder Wing, I thought it a profound lack of creativity to create such a weapon. But, well, then I found the Cannon Crawler, with its mighty claw. And then... I couldn't help but notice how much Jumbo's claw acts the same way as those new long distance hand cannons I've been seeing soldiers fawn over. I think Dr. Branston noticed the similarity as well. It makes me wonder sometimes how much of these creatures we really should be showing the world.
