I still think it's v interesting how Jarlaxle is extremely coded even in his first appearances as like, "I am Not Straight In The Slightest but it's the 90s and IP fiction so we can't say that" to the reader, but by the standards of his own culture, he's like, masculine-as-performance because drow men are expected to be ornamental. Like why yes, he is the Most Ornamental Man In Menzo, thank you for asking, do you not enjoy him? But he's so ornamental and decorative!

He was swaggering—there was no other word to describe him. The dark elves of Menzoberranzan, particularly the lowly males, normally donned quiet, practical clothes, dark-hued robes adorned with spiders or webs, or plain black jerkins beneath supple chain mail armor, and almost always, both male and female drow wore camouflaging piwafwis, dark cloaks that could hide them from the probing eyes of their many enemies.

Not so with Jarlaxle. His head was shaven and always capped by an outrageous wide-brimmed hat feathering the gigantic plume of a diatryma bird. In lieu of a cloak or robe, he wore a shimmering cape that flickered through every color of the spectrum, both in light and under the scrutiny of heat-sensing eyes looking in the infrared range. His sleeveless vest was cut high to show the tight muscles of his stomach, and he carried an assortment of rings and necklaces, bracelets, even anklets, that chimed gratingly—but only when the mercenary wanted them to. Like his boots, which had sounded so clearly on the hard chapel floor, the jewelry could be silenced completely.

I think you could write a lot about how including Jarlaxle in the second book of the OG prequels implies a lot about what 'ideal masculinity/ideal presentation in the eyes of Menzoberranzan society' vs 'masculinity as an individual performance ' looks like.

artemis and dahlia are so good. the contrast between the supposed hero drizzt always keeping her at an arm's lenght, preferring the "soft look" she puts on to please him where she acts and looks softer and covers her tattoos and scars, knowing she had a painful past but not bothering to ask or look into it because it would shake his morals and he would rather pretend to not know than to actually confront it or even help dahlia through it. meanwhile the supposedly cold killer artemis with just a few looks saw the pain in her, let her have the kill against herzgo because he realized it was important to her even if he had just as good reasons and he didnt know dahlia's yet, and when they were alone he let dahlia be vulnerable to him, asked her about her pain, and when she was not comfortable to speak about it he just stayed near her and comforted her

I don't think people realize how a 100% serious I am when I say that Minthara is am actual legit Princess. The Royal Daughters of House Baenre are even referred to as Prinesses. And considering the duties that Minthara had in political intrigue, protection of the law of Lolth, and negotiations between House Matrons and High Priestess alike, she was also a Princess in actual ROYAL DUTIES, by the real definition of a Princess.

I think after a certain amount of time being in a relationship with Minthara, Tav's poison immunity slowly goes up to the point one day this conversation happens

We have yet to really meet him in the campaign. Only seeing glimpses of him in his sister's shadow, I'm sure that's about change though.

yes, having vhaal in your party means lolth gets to directly spy on them all day every day if she wants, but... he's also incredibly beautiful and he thinks that makes up for it honestly

someone doing the math down to the MINUTE detail and finding that Minthara might actually be around the age of 230 and I'm floored... cause.. she really IS the 20 year old of Drow ages.
