My Issue with Redemption Arcs
Tumblr media
I think my most unpopular popculture opinion ever is: Zuko's redemption arc... does not really work for me. Though it is not that much a thing about Zuko's redemption arc and rather about how white western media tends to portray redemption arcs.
Usually it goes something like that: There is this villain character, who usually from the very beginning is carrying this huge "gotta get redeemed later" sign with themselves, who at some point in the story goes "wait, am I the bad guy?!" They will then go ahead and join the ragtag band of protagonists, who might be kinda mistrustful for obvious reasons, but will probably come along within half a seasons worth of episodes (or up to 10 book chapters) and quickly forgive him. There might be some episodes/chapters to establish the reformed villain's role within the group then. If the now reformed villain has done ill by a large group of people (because they are a war criminal or something) there might also be an episode/chapter where they go ahead and save a village or something, willing to sacrifice themselves. Which instantly will make everyone everywhere totally forgive them and they end up being celebrated a hero by all.
Thanks. I hate it.
But now let me talk about why I hate it so much.
It is not even a complicated reason. It is simply: This kind of story tends to put narrative pressure onto the victims to forgive the villain, who might have suffered all kinds of both physical and mental pain through what the villain have done.
Depending on the kind of story they might have suffered abuse, might have lost family members or friends, might have been a supressed class or even a slave because of the villain.
And then the story will go: "But, hey, the villain is now really sorry and you tots should forgive them because they didn't mean it! Don't you see, they have this big dramatic, sympathetic backstory that totally explains why they have turned out that way."
And I am sorry, but... It just does not work like that.
My issue is not the villain redeeming themselves. That is fine. But it is specifically the relation to the victim and the expectation that the victim(s) need to be fine with it then that irks me so much. And how easily they are forgiven.
And yes, the reason why this irks me so much is, that in real life we often also expect victims to behave like that. "Oh, your parents abused you? Well, they said they are sorry and are willing to make up for it. So you should accept that!" - "Oh, that bully from highschool? See, they went to a super rough patch with their family at the time and now they feel sorry. Will you not go and meet with them so they can apologize?" - "Oh, that expartner who raped you? Yeah, they went to therapy and are now totally reformed. They feel really sorry. Forgive them."
And it also obviously goes for group-based violence. "Oh, that politician, who campaigned on taking your human rights from you and had your brother thrown into prison? Yeah, they totally are seeing now that they were in the wrong and are willing to make up for it! Give them a chance!"
And that's just not... how any of this works.
I am perfectly fine with people switching sides and joining the good side... But I am just not fine with people being forgiven by everyone everywhere by just... doing this one thing or gesture for them, making everyone instantly go "I guess it is fine now".
If you follow me for any amount of time you know that my favorite series currently is Castlevania - and if you have followed me a bit longer you also know my favorite movie of all time is Mad Max Fury Road. And I think both have a much better approach to redemption arcs.
Isaac's story in Castlevania very much is a redemption arc. But during this redemption arc NOBODY has to forgive Isaac. Well, that is nobody but himself. There is no survivors from the genocide that he has to save to proof himself and who then are forced by the narrative to say: "Yeah, actually he is a good guy." His entire arc is about he himself figuring out why he did wrong and how he could do better.
Same with Mad Max Fury Road and Furiosa. The story is not shy about telling you that it is a redemption story. Though the things the characters need redemption for are not even defined in detail. It is just said: "Yeah, they are looking for redemption." It is very much about Furiosa and Max learning that they can do right by some people, even if they have done wrong by others. We do not even know (well, in Max's case we do through additional material), who they have failed/done wrong by. Those do not factor into the story. The story is about them learning to do right.
Nobody owes anyone forgiveness. And I hate it, when media frames it as if they do.

How do I write a rape scene from the POV of the rapist, who intensely regrets what he did while intoxicated, without making it seem like rape can be overlooked of the rapist feels bad about it?
The character in question absolutely would not have done it if he had been sober, but he wasn't sober, so he did something horrible. When he wakes up sober, he's horrified to remember what he did. Complicating matters is that there was a spell that prevents him from confessing to the victim, who was passed out from drinking an entire bottle of soju, while the rape happened.
It is also deliberately ambiguous as to how many rapists there were
Male victim btw, so no risk of pregnancy

I guess 2025 is the year I learn more about feminism and the history of women's rights in France?
In case you didn't see my previous post, this is about the 1972's "Bobigny trials", where Gisèle Halimi (a lawyer and important figure of feminism in France) represented first Marie-Claire Chevalier for getting an abortion following her rape (which was illegal at the time in France, under any circumstances), and a month later Marie-Claire's mother, Michèle Chevalier, as well as 3 other women who helped her get the abortion. Gisèle Halimi's plea became absolutely iconic and those trials set a precedent: they helped push forward the decriminalisation of abortions, which happened in 1975 thanks to another huge figure of feminism in France, Simone Veil
So this graphic novel comes as a complement to Gisèle Halimi's plea, that I read a few days ago. This is more about the trials themselves and it was really interesting!

You know what no I fo have something to add. I NEED every person on this app to listen, this is worse than dystopia 1984 shit this is the real world application of compelled speech, neocons love to argue that they're compelled to use pronouns, but this shit, unlike, adult funtime, or using the word "smush" to refer to sex is actually compelled speech and ill tell you why, because it hits you in your wallet. The guidelines of youtube and tiktok state you can't be monetized if you don't censor yourself, this leaks into day to day speech because you get so fucking used to not being allowed to say fuck online so you can make money. These topics require us to treat them like as serious and real things. But the infantilization and sanitization of terms to make you more ad friendly means they are compelling you nor to acknowledge these things in your content. I am literally so serious when I say if you mean to say self harm or suicide or sex or rape or death please use those words, do not sanitize your speech, if you need to be monetized start a patreon, or a Kofi, anything but letting an ad company tell you how to talk! Please for the love of God do not let anyone take your speech!
“you don’t like the proliferation of terms like Unalive outside of TikTok because you realize that you’re aging out of youth culture and it makes you uncomfortable!”
no I don’t like it because there’s something INCREDIBLY dystopian about being forced to soften terms for basic parts of the human experience like death and sex (and even more so terms for oppressed minorities- call me a “le-dollar sign-bian” and I will bite you) purely because advertisers and corporations demand it

Like you, like me ~ 13 reasons why ( Oc x Oc )
Summary: After dealing with her rough and horrible past, Eleanour Baker finally lets her boyfriend Isaiah Patterson take her.
Warning: ⚠️ Sexual Content, First-time sex, kissing, Etc.⚠️
Tumblr media
“ Are you sure about this?” Isaiah asked, hands on his girlfriend's hips. Elena nodded and looked at him in the eyes, she wanted this and it was time for her to take control of her life.
The male on top of her made her feel safe, there was some time when the feelings were too much, but other than that it was okay.
“ Yes, I want this Izzy. It should have been you” Elena commented, placing her hand on his biceps.
Isaiah shushed her. “ Hey, hey. Hush, he didn't take anything from you, you are safe and loved. I will make you feel good, I'm here, Elena. I mean it, just let me know how you feel and if I'm making you uncomfortable, just tell me to stop, okay?”.
Elena Baker was touched by his words, who knew that she would find an interesting person like Isaiah, who's to say that he is the one?
“ Ready?”.
She nodded.
“ Yes”.
Isaiah grabbed a condom wrapper from his nightstand and placed it around himself. He looked at the female he loved and smiled at her.
“ again are you sure? We don't have to if you are uncomfortable or not ready?”.
Elena shakes her head. “ Izzy come on, I want this. Please let me enjoy this”.
She adjusted herself on the bed and made herself comfortable, both of them stripped Naked of their clothes and stared at each other.
Isaiah was amazed at her body, it was gorgeous and just.... Beautiful
Words cannot describe how he felt at the moment, and to think that all of this was his.
Elena spreads her leg and removed her panties and felt the cold air on her body and shivered.
Isaiah noticed this and thought the shiver was fear, he immediately went to pull away but she stopped him.
“ No, don't move. Stay I'm not scared, I was just cold, let's pull the cover over us and we can continue”.
“ Sounds like a plan” Isaiah replied.
He pulled the covers over them and placed himself at the entrance of her vagina.
Slowly and gently he enters Elena, she winced but relaxed immediately after.
It didn't hurt!
“ Did I hurt you?”.
Elena shakes her head and relaxed more, it actually felt nice.
Isaiah wasn't too big or too small, just the right size. “ No, actually can you go faster? It feels really good”.
Isaiah smiled, bit his lip, and nodded. “ Of course, whatever you desire”.
He did what she wanted, he moved faster carefully trying to not hurt her, a part of him wanted to move faster, but he knew if he did so, then she would be in pain or freak out.
Elena shivered as a gasp left her lips, she placed her hand on her boyfriend's biceps/shoulders. “ Hold on, let me-” she trailed off, lifting her legs and wrapping them around his waist / torso.
“ Now, you can continue ” she breathed looking into his beautiful ocean eyes.
Those words nearly made him melt, and he did. Isaiah continues to move, hitting Elena's G-spot over and over again.
Gasp, moans, and screams left her lips, while only he grunted.
They were glad no one was around, or otherwise, this situation would be messy.
As they reach their climax, Isaiah pulls out and took the condom off, and threw it in the trash.
Elena Baker was panting, she was amazed. This was how it supposed to felt?
Feel?
Tears pricked at her eyelid.
This experience was beautiful.
Noticing this Isaiah looked at her with worry, he lay down near her and pulled her close.
“ What's wrong?”.
“ Nothing, I.... Uh... This was beautiful, this was how my first time was supposed to be”.
Isaiah shushed her, he gently pressed his lips to hers and pulled back after a few seconds. “ He didn't take anything, and I'm glad I'm your first”.
Elena laughs and lays her head on his chest. “ Yeah, I know. I'm just glad it was you. Thank you for this”.
Isaiah kissed her cheek then the top of her head. “ no need to thank me, but you're welcome. Now let's get some rest before my mom gets home”.
“ Okay”.
And they continued on blissfully in paradise.

It is also important to note that other terf rhetoric I often see talks about how men (and even young boys) are inherently the abusers and can never be victims. Like, that shit where people decide men can't be sexually assaulted because they're men - that's terf rhetoric.
If you see things automatically demonizing men and making every single one out to be a monster be cautious as fuck man. It might seem extreme saying that above, but this stuff is slipped under the radar all the time.
I really do mean it, if you see people casually slipping in conversation that women are the only victims of the patriarchy or that women are the only real victims in society you watch that person like a hawk because they're almost always either consuming terf rhetoric and not realizing it or they ARE a terf.
These things don't often start out as extreme, it's the frog in a pot of water raising to a boil situation. Think critically when interacting with people online.
It is deeply, deeply beneficial to TERFs if the only characteristic of TERF ideology you will recognize as wrong, harmful, or problematic is "they hate trans women".
TERF ideology is an expansive network of extremely toxic ideas, and the more of them we accept and normalize, the easier it becomes for them to fly under the radar and recruit new TERFs. The closer they get to turning the tide against all trans people, trans women included.
Case in point: In 2014-2015, I fell headlong into radical feminism. I did not know it was called radical feminism at the time, but I also didn't know what was wrong with radical feminism in the first place. I didn't see a problem with it.
I was a year deep into this shit when people I had been following, listening to, and looking up to finally said they didn't think trans women were women. It was only then that I unfollowed those people, specifically; but I continued to follow other TERFs-who-didn't-say-they-were-TERFs. I continued ingesting and spreading their ideas- for years after.
If TERFs "only target trans women" and "only want trans women gone", if that's the one and only problem with their ideology and if that's the only way we'll define them, we will inevitably miss a vast majority of the quiet beliefs that support their much louder hatred of trans women.
As another example: the trans community stood relatively united when TERFs and conservatives targeted our right to use the correct restroom, citing the "dangers" of trans women sharing space with cis women. But when they began targeting Lost Little Girls and Confused Lesbians and trotting detransitioners out to raise a panic about trans men, virtually the only people speaking up about it were other transmascs. Now we see a rash of anti-trans healthcare bills being passed in the US, and they're hurting every single one of us.
When you refuse to call a TERF a TERF just because they didn't specifically say they hate trans women, when you refuse to think critically about a TERF belief just because it's not directly related to trans women, you are actively helping TERFs spread their influence and build credibility.

Okay yeah I love that people are like "I think the lady from Mouthwashing should kill her rapist" (I haven't played/seen Mouthwashing yet Cuz I've been busy catching up to a bunch of other things so bear with me on my interpretation of these fanarts) and people are making empowering fanarts about it, sure.
But let me tell you as a schizophrenic person and victim of rape having a VERY difficult time right now mentally, it didn't exactly make me feel very good seeing a post where TWICE in it there were fanart/fanedit pieces in big ass lettering saying "let's kill *OUR* rapists together".
I love the artist who did the fanart on the bottom of the post too, truly and greatly for sure as I followed them for special interest related reasons. I don't blame anyone for me having a bad reaction to that. However I do so wish there had been a trigger warning or it had been tagged properly somewhere so that my blacklist could've filtered it.
Because let me tell you, just because my ass is self aware that this is triggering for me especially from a place of delusion and paranoia, does not mean I can stop it from Doing The Thing ™. I fortunately right now am doing something that is somewhat grounding me so I'm not completely lost in it, which is how I'm able to make this post about it. I have like,, a semi cognition currently thankfully.
It's not the topic of rape itself that's doing it, mind you. It's the wording of it *including me* that's sending it.

As a short rant, it's really annoying just how frequently the female body gets sexualized and how it affects the media. When it comes to horror, the women typically get raped, deal with a miscarriage, or anything else that has to do with the female reproductive system.
Women are more than their reproductive systems. More than their organs. And it's just really dehumanizing to see that.

Ok k I was reading the witcher today, time of contempt and its around the events of season 3 in the show.
So yennefer sends ciri into town with a bank clerk while she does some boring secret bank wok.
Cw for SA, very brief description.
While they're in the crowd, some priest dude grabs Ciris butt and she turns around and yells at him and winds up to punch him. The clerk pulls her away not to cause a scene, and then the prose basically goes "and then he bought ciri some sweet fritters and she forgot about the whole incident. After that...."
And im like. Ah yes, what a silly girl, all people who are assaulted just need some sweet treats to forget the whole thing! Its not a big deal! Like a little grazed knee a little.oopsie distract the child with treats!
Other than the first book which Im DNFing bc the sexism is so intense, youre going along fine and then he just whacks you with it. Like mm this is Ciris viewpoint why the hell does she find Yennefers clothes "provocative"? Provoking of what? I dont think Ciri is meant to be sapphic and Yen is meant to be her mother figure! Ciris never like, wow Geralt is so dashing today that would be absurd. But women (and teen girls) always gotta be sexualised! Its ridiculous. I want like. The abridged version that cuts all that out. Discretion of the translator or something.
I was reading this shitty horror novella, and one detail that really stuck out to me is that this girl main character (who wore a nightgown throughout) was surprised by her period, and out of shame took off her soiled underwear and hid them. this wasn’t her first period or anything, it just caught her off guard. which, sure, that happens. but she then proceeded to walk around the house underwearless for the rest of the novella. I was reading this like………so is she just freebleeding??? is she leaving a trail everywhere she goes? what’s happening here? is the nightgown white? is she bleeding up the place in her white nightgown while everyone else is too polite to comment on it? she has multiple conversations with other people. are they blind? do they not care? is this normal?
after I finished the book I looked up the author, and it was a cis dude. that was a big ohhhh moment. like he just didn’t know…..that he wrote a novella about a freebleeder. he didn’t know that he was creating this insanity-inducing situation with no explanation. but did his editor not know? did nobody who initially read it know? why didn’t they know? what’s happening?

So a few months ago there was the discourse about would you rather meet a man or a bear in the woods. I didn't want to touch it while the discourse was hot and everyone dug in hard because those are not good conditions for nuance, but I waited until today, June 1st, for a specific reason.
I'm not going to take a position in the bear vs man debate because I don't think it matters. What is really being asked here is how afraid are you of men? Specifically, unexpected men who are, perhaps, strange.
People have a lot of very real fear of men that comes from a lot of very real places. Back when I was first transitioning in 2015 and 2016, I decided to start presenting as a woman in public even though I did not pass in the slightest.
I live in a red state. I knew other trans women who had been attacked by men, raped by men. I knew I was taking a risk by putting myself out there. I was the only visibly trans person in the area of campus I frequented, and people made sure I never forgot that. Most were harmless enough and the worst I got from them was curious stares. Others were more aggressive, even the occasional threat. I had to avoid public bathrooms, of course, and always be aware of my surroundings.
I know how frightening it is to be alone at night while a pair of men are following behind you and not knowing if they are just going in the same direction or if they want to start something - made all the worse for the constant low level threat I had been living under for over a year by just being visibly trans in a place where many are openly hostile to queer people. You have to remember, this was at the height of the first wave of bathroom law discussions, a lot of people were very angry about trans women in particular. My daily life was terrifying at times. I was never the subject of direct violence, but I knew trans women who had been.
I want you to keep all that in mind.
So man or bear is really the question "how afraid of men are you?", and the question that logically follows is "What if there was a strange man at night in a deserted parking lot?" or "What if you were alone in an elevator with a man?" or "What if you met a strange man in the woman's bathroom?"
My state recently passed an anti trans bathroom bill. The rhetoric they used was about protecting women and children from "strange men", aka trans women.
Conservatives hijack fear for their bigoted agenda.
When I first started presenting as a woman the campus apartment complex was designed for young families. The buildings were in a large square with playgrounds in the center, and there were often children playing. I quickly noticed that when I took my daughter out to play, often several children would immediately stop what they were doing and run back inside. It didn't take me long to confirm that the parents were so afraid of "the strange man who wears skirts" that their children were under strict instructions to literally run away as soon as they saw me.
"How afraid are you of a strange man being near your children?"
I mentioned above that I had to avoid public bathrooms. This was not because of men. It was because of women who were so afraid of random men that they might get violent or call someone like the police to be violent for them if I ever accidentally presented myself in a way that could be interpreted as threatening, when my mere presence could be seen as a threat. If I was in the library studying and I realized that it was just me and one other woman I would get up and leave because she might decide that stranger danger was happening.
Your fear is real. Your fear might even come from lived experiences. None of that prevents the fact that your fear can be violent. Women's fear of men is one of the driving forces of transmisogyny because it is so easy to hijack. And it isn't just trans women. Other trans people experience this, and other queer people too. Racial minorities, homeless people, neurodivergent people, disabled people.
When you uncritically engage with questions like man or bear, when you uncritically validate a culture of reactive fear, you are paving the way for conservatives and bigots to push their agenda. And that is why I waited until pride month. You cannot engage and contribute to the culture of reactive fear without contributing to queerphobia of all varieties. The sensationalist culture of reactive fear is a serious queer issue, and everyone just forgot that for a week as they argued over man or bear. I'm not saying that "man" is the right answer. I am saying that uncritically engaging with such obvious click bait trading on reactive fear is a problem. Everyone fucked up.
It is not a moral failing to experience fear, but it is a moral responsibility to keep a handle on that fear and know how it might harm others.
