Sometimes it's challenging to say "I'm struggling right now." or "I'm in need of help right now." Knowing how you are feeling at any given time, why you are feeling that way, and what you can do to better it—even if that means just talking to your doctor—is one of the most important mental health skills you can acquire. I used to ignore how anxious or depressed I was feeling, and then I would collapse. Be so fearful that my agoraphobia set in, making it impossible for me to leave the house, or I'd get so depressed that I'd spend days in bed sobbing and having no idea why.
One of the main things that has improved my mental health is learning how to recognise when I'm really struggling. Let's check in then! Where are you at this moment? Are you in a good mood and your levels of anxiety and despair are quite low? By trying to keep busy, are you denying that you're beginning to struggle? When you should focus that energy inward and take care of yourself, are you overextending yourself? The following query is, "After you've responded to that, what do you REALLY need to feel better?"

WOULD YOU RATHER.. ➡ Work in an office? ➡ Work from home? Btw: If you want to work from home, you're in the right place :) I have worked in offices and I have worked at home. 🍻 I prefer the latter. Don't get me wrong. I've LOVED most of my coworkers, but there is just something to be said about being in control of your own work. It's what I prefer. Working with horrible bosses was draining. ❌ Oh, there were so many of them. ❌ It's aggravating being told after unwanted harassment: "we're not hiring anyone to fill that job, so either deal with it or quit". ❌ It's aggravating training managers who don't know basic functions and who turn around and treat you like 💩. Now: ✅ I'm my own boss. ✅ I get to homeschool my kid (who prefers being home)! My opinions aside, I've heard good and things about both routes: ➡ Some only get things done if someone else is calling the shots. ➡ Some simply can't handle working by themselves. ➡ Some prefer the quiet of being home. You control the music and there's no background chatter. ➡ Some find comfort in the background noise an office brings. No matter what you choose, it goes without saying: 🌻 A bad job situation will destroy your mental health! Only 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth live in LGBTQ-affirming homes, leaving 69% of all queer youth to find safety in online spaces. Religious queer youth are some of the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQ community due to the religious pressure to be seen as ungodly. Covid-19, Mental Health Struggles
There is no question that living through the Covid-19 pandemic, our lives have been changed forever. The pandemic has not only caused unimaginable human suffering it has also challenged our mental and emotional wellbeing individually, and on a societal level.
Covid-19 - changed behaviours
Covid is not only affecting people’s anxiety and causing stress, it is also affecting relationships and trust in other people and institutions; their sense of belonging and personal security. Behaviours have changed, people seem more pre-occupied and in some cases they have become invisible, in other cases, they have become mean-spirited.
Governments should be protecting everyone equally, but studies show the impacts will be particularly severe for the most disadvantaged. While governments should be acting to continue to contain the spread of the virus, countries also need to assess the impacts of the disease on all aspects of people’s lives, especially those most vulnerable.
Covid - cases are still rising
Cases are still rising in most affected countries. In addition to the obvious risks to physical health and to the economy, the epidemic is also affecting people’s mental health and wellbeing.
Countries’ response to the pandemic also need to address the well-being perspective in a holistic and integrated manner. Failing to do so risks deepening inequalities, possibly creating new divides, and undermining the cohesiveness of societies. (Source: https://www.oecd.org)
Conclusion
Over the last 12 years I have and continue to write on my blog The CP Diary. I have seen first hand how mental health has steadily declined in the UK, first through Brexit that was on-going for 3 years, before it physically left. Now the UK is dealing with its aftermath, which is going to run and run, and we have Covid-19.
The stats for my website, in its busiest period was 84,000 organic hits a year and that has now declined to 56,000 organic hits a year. That said we can still be in control of our mental health. We can take control of our emotions, or we can ignore our emotions, and our emotions will inevitably deal with us.
I lost my mum to cancer because she struggled with mental health over the years; she was 67 years old. On the opposite scales, I have another family member I am close to, who is still living. At 86 years old, with so many ailments, she literally is a walking medical phenomenon. But no matter her physical ailments, she continues to remain mentally strong.

Do you meditate? Pray? Close your eyes and take deep breaths? Do you take that pause before chaos sets in or as it's happening? A simple search on the internet and a few articles later.. There are a LOT of studies touting the benefits of deep breathing. ➡ Calms your nerves. ➡ Reduces stress. ➡ Reduces feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. ..to name a few. It's a recommended part of a pro-mental health routine. I certainly agree and recommend it. For me, deep breathing is also a clue my allergies (that trigger my asthma) are under control and I will be able to function normally. Yay!
