Inverted crosses and crucifixes are not “iconic symbols of Satanism”!!!
The above image? 100% holy. Totally canonical. Has absolutely NOTHING to do with Satan, Lucifer, or “The Devil”. It’s called the Petrine Cross aka The Cross of Saint Peter and is a symbol of piety, humility, deference, and martyrdom particularly to Jesus Christ (not necessarily his other canonical phases of existence) and his relationship with the Pope. It’s also one of the symbols most closely associated with The Pope.
It is one of the main reasons I can’t take exorcist and demon-themed horror movies seriously ever. Not because I’m a polytheistic soul-selling Bandrui (those things are true but they’re not why), but because it’s a continuity error! A hilarious one if you think about it! The demon is just showing how much the characters really don’t understand about the religion they’re espousing in the movie!
So, why would St. Peter be associated with something that, for all intents and purposes, we visually associate with something that is backwards from Christianity or whatever “holiness” means? Because, like Jesus, St. Peter was also crucified, or at least that is the version of St. Peter’s story that is considered most canonical. In truth, stories about St. Peter that still exist date back only as late as 200 AD with the apocryphal “Acts of Peter”. Whether or not the upside down part of the story was canonical hasn’t been determined with any real certainty, but it was the version told by this guy:
Origen of Alexandria! Origen was largely considered one of the greatest early Christian luminaries, scholars, philosophers, poets, and all-around book nerds and is the primary source for the whole “St. Peter was crucified upside down” story, inspiring Renaissance masterworks like this little number by Caravaggio:
“Crucifixion Of Saint Peter”
Origen’s popularized telling of the tragic demise of St. Peter makes a big deal about the story-canonical feature that St. Peter insisted upon being crucified upside-down because he didn’t feel worthy to emulate the same, now-iconic crucifixion of Jesus.
So how did the Petrine Cross become a symbol associated with Satanism?
France.
Well, not all of it, but France was involved. In the early 19th century, a cult leader by the name of Eugène Vintras insisted that he was the reincarnation of the Prophet Elijah. Aside from that, he also practiced necromancy (which is the art of cavorting with DEMONS, not corpses for the love of my blackened, shriveled occultist heart) and was commonly seen wearing robes and symbols depicting the Petrine Cross.
In comes This Guy:
Éliphas Lévi was another famous 19th century French Occultist (after leaving the Catholic priesthood when he was in his 20′s to get drunk and listen to metal or something) who took one look at, and presumably all surviving sketches of Eugène Vintras, saw his regalia of Petrine crosses, and wrote the literally-damning words that for wearing his inverted crosses, Vintras’ satanic leanings were obvious.
After Éliphas Lévi wrote about Vintras’ wearing of the Petrine Cross and Satanic preferences, the inverted cross gradually became more and more associated with anti-religion movements and, of course, Satanism. The final nail in the Apocryphal Iconography Crucifixion came in the 1960′s-1980′s with the dawn of the horror movie franchise and the rise of the Satanic Panic, a mass hysteria movement that had to be debunked by the FBI where young people and children were convinced by their therapists during hypnotherapy sessions that they had been the subjects of Satanic rituals at the hands of the parents/guardians at very young ages that never happened, destroyed families, left countless people traumatized. FBI agent Kenneth Lanning went on to publish what’s commonly referred to as “The Lanning Report” to debunk the claims of abuse and lambast the therapist that started the panic in the first place.
If you want to really rock like a Satanist, consider donating stuff like feminine hygiene products to your local Planned Parenthood ;)

On doxing:
The Facebook profile “June Everett” clearly and unequivocally claims to be the Campaign Director of the After School Satan club program, as well as an “Ordained Minister of The Satanic Temple”.
Early on in our exchange, she accused us of doxing and said that she had already had a conversation with us the previous weekend.
June Everett: I know whatever I share with you is going to be posted on your private shit-posting page and Twitter Account. I saw all the posts that you shared using your real name when I was answering questions for you last weekend. So that was cool. Don’t worry — I won’t doxx you like you doxx everyone else. 🙄 I’m sorry you hate TST so much that it has turned in to your full-time job. I would like to answer questions for you without you being so hostile about it. But I know whatever I say or honestly answer will just be flipped and twisted around and won’t mean a thing. So. What a conundrum.
At the time, this was a bit baffling, but with a bit of work we understood that she meant our fact-check of TST’s 2021 year-in-review where we referenced the conversation she had with someone else as “Andrea Williams Wright” under The Satanic Temple’s public Facebook post about After School Satan clubs returning mere weeks after claiming they were actively meeting in 2021.
Although it remains public and we linked to the conversation directly there (and will do so again), the person asking those questions is not one of the four people being sued by The Satanic Temple, which is all “Queer Satanic” is, so we didn’t want to corral them into this without their permission.
Now, TST did attempt to dox the four of us by not only putting what they thought were our government names but also our home addresses into the public federal court record as part of serving us papers. Which is something fairly different from what the Temple’s supporters typically mean by it: using the same government names of people they use when they buy stuff, own stuff, and give testimony in court as part of a “constellation of affiliate entities” exerting power over its members’ lives.
The Satanic Temple says, “We’re a legitimate religion!” But when pressed, it’s always, “I’m worried about being held accountable for things I say and do publicly for my legitimate religion.”
This is not deadnaming a trans person. This is not taking a new name as part of religious conversion.
This is the campaign director for what purports to be a national religious program for children, and she ought to perform the minimal amount of ownership and accountability of actually standing behind what she’s doing.
But — and this is where it gets tricky with The Satanic Temple — Wright being the same person as June Everett is based on only her word, and unlike typical “Satanyms”, there are multiple people legally named “June Everett”, including in Colorado, where Wright and Everett are from. Both were even involved in Menstruatin’ With Satan Campaigns in Colorado: Everett in 2020 and Wright in 2020, and Everett again in 2021. And yet the top non-Facebook search results for Everett including a LinkedIn profile is clearly a different person from Wright.
It should not be this difficult to just confirm that someone is who they say are.
So, while Everett says that she is the same person as Wright, and both Wright and Everett have publicly claimed to be Campaign Director for the After School Satan club program, we still cannot independently confirm that they are. Which is wild.
The same day the conversation was happening between us where Everett accused us of doxing, a Jewish community was targeted while meeting in their synagogue yet again. Somehow Jewish people — who are actually targeted for the ethno-religion rather than just by euphemism and proxy as Satanists are — conduct their work under their own names, meet publicly, and have a sense of community that can have internal and external accountability.
What an awful, pathetic religion Satanism is if it wants to get national headlines, untraceable money, and the right to teach children but is too craven to even manage that.
“After School Satan” clubs have been a point of pride for The Satanic Temple since first announced in late summer 2016.
They purport to be a humanist and reason-based counter to the evangelical right’s Good News Clubs.
Unfortunately, TST’s claims are lies.

there are different sects of satanism and from what i know the church of satanism (organized in 1966 by anton lavey) is more aggressive in its tactics and doesn’t really go out of its way to try and be an inclusive environment. however, the satanic temple is an organization that is very vocal in their support for members of the lgbtq+ community. recently they started the “menstruatin’ with satan” drive which helped give menstrual products to those in need, including the incarcerated.
Yeah I know I just didn’t wanna jump to conclusions and assume the random bigoted Satanist must be LaVeyan. There’s plenty of unaffiliated assholes in the world, after all

I can confirm the abortion rite has been a part of TST since 2017 at the earliest. They aren't worshipping Satan. They are just leftists with a particular flair for the dramatic.
stop recommending this useless misinfo. the satanic temple is a bullshit organization who take advantage of reproductive healthcare crises to get more attention. they have never once actually won anything in court for abortion access.
#also they sent me an email once with the subject line#menstruatin with satan#so they have that going for them#tst

I'm not being allowed to answer asks on the app rn. It just keeps not posting 😭. Anyway,
1: I will be sure to remove the wordle answers from my tags going forward. I got into the habit when my words were different bc I was stuck on the old wordle. Sorry to spoil it for you! :(
2: Menstruatin with Satan was a TST initiative to collect menstrual products and distribute them to people in need. The name is fun and dramatic which suits TST. For reference I got the email in May 2018.
3: I do not use tone indicators with any regularity. Emojis, emoticons, and clarifying sentences are usually my go-to. I haven't really had a problem with people misreading my tone online as least in tiktok comments where I would expect a response if I was really screwing up. I don't have anything against them or anything. They're just not something I use too much.

The article found in The Guardian delves into the backstory and reason for a recent polarizing film titled “Hail Satan”. The main purpose of the film, the producer says, is to show the world the realities of what Rationalistic Satanism is and its beliefs so as to debunk the myths and common misconceptions Americans have. Many Americans believe that Satanism, as the name implies, involves the worship of the Devil and demons in horrific rituals and practices involving the sexual abuse and murder of children but the reality could not be any more different. The goal of the Satanic Temple, similar to that of Atheists, is to provide an alternative to the religiously saturated American culture that advocates for a lifestyle directed by reason and logic as opposed to faith. Many Americans fear Satanism as they do Atheism because they believe it leads to immorality but the film attempts to refute those ideas that may have originated with the Atheist movement led by Madalyn Murray O’Hair in the latter half of the 20th century. The Satanic Temple has taken on projects such as adopting a highway and cleaning up the litter with pitchforks, donating socks to homeless shelters, and even donating menstrual products to local shelters in a campaign called “Menstruatin [sic] with Satan” to show that Satanists are not the immoral groups that everyone makes them out to be but rather just ordinary people like everyone else. The name of the aforementioned campaign shows the Temple’s humorous practices and pranks that “are designed to highlight religious hypocrisy and advance the cause of secularism” (Wikipedia). One such prank was bringing a large statue of the demon Baphomet to the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol advocating that their statue should be placed alongside the monument of the ten commandments in an attempt to remind the government and its citizens that “America is a secular country and that a blatant Christian bias is antithetical to this [idea]”.
Though I am an Evangelical Christian, I do understand the Temple’s desire for true freedom of religion and separation of church and state in America. Additionally, I do agree that the practices of the Temple may seem extreme but oftentimes, their extreme actions and rhetoric are the only way to get those in power to pay attention to their message and the cause they fight for. Even though I may not agree with their methods, I do agree with their cause to bring true religious freedom and creating the nonsectarian government that the first amendment describes.

Satanic Abortions cut through unconstitutional abortion laws
States across the US have enacted cruel, unconstitutional abortion laws that require doctors to sexually assault women seeking abortions and lie to them about the health impacts of abortion. Some laws require funerals for foetal remains. These laws were pushed by ALEC, the corporate-backed “legislative exchange” that pushes “model legislation” through a network of slick lobbyists in state-houses across the country. ALEC purports to be in favor of “liberty” and “small government.” Enter the Satanic Temple, a federally recognized religion whose members do not believe in Satan or supernatural phenomena. They believe “that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition.” The Temple has a fantastic schtick. They go to places where christofascists have gotten laws passed that shove their weird, apostate version of “Christianity” down everyone else’s throats and point out that the First Amendment requires nondiscrimination among faiths. Wanna put a giant stone Ten Commandments in front of your courthouse? Sure. But they’re gonna put a giant statue of Baphomet right next to it. The court challenges they mount aren’t cheap, but they’re slam dunks. The US Constitution is pretty clear on this. Now, in 1993, Chuck Schumer sponsored the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” which lets Americans sue governments over laws that “substantially burdens a person’s exercise of religion.” https://www.congress.gov/bill/103rd-congress/house-bill/1308 Religious maniacs LOVE the RFRA and its progeny, like SCOTUS’s Hobby Lobby decision, which broadened the RFRA’s provisions and allowed corporations to claim exemptions from Rendering Unto Caesar where that interfered with the owners’ faith. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burwell_v._Hobby_Lobby_Stores,_Inc. Guess what you get when you combine the RFRA, ALEC’s restrictive abortion laws, and the Satanic Temple? That’s right…SATANIC ABORTIONS. https://announcement.thesatanictemple.com/rrr-campaign41280784 A Satanic Abortion is a religious ritual that is totally indistinguishable from a normal, medical abortion, except that the participant says a few self-affirming words about her bodily autonomy. Oh, also: the ritual absolutely forbids, as a bedrock matter of religous conviction, any waiting periods, the withholding of medically necessary advice, mandatory counseling, required readings, and unnecessary sonograms. Also forbidden: mandatory fetal heartbeat listening sessions and compulsory fetal burials. If you want an abortion and the doctor tries this bullshit, hand them one of these exemption letters explaining how the law doesn’t apply thanks to the RFRA. https://www.dropbox.com/s/mup4nee1n9wkvqb/Religious%20Abortion%20Exemption%20Letter.pdf Now, the religious right could fight this. But if they win…they overturn the RFRA, and Hobby Lobby has to provide its employees with contraception and all the other theocratic exemptions go poof, too. The Temple is pretty amazing. Here’s some highlights of their previous campaigns: “Publicly confronted hate groups, fought for the abolition of corporal punishment in public schools, applied for equal representation when religious installations are placed on public property, provided religious exemption and legal protection against laws that unscientifically restrict women’s reproductive autonomy, exposed harmful pseudo-scientific practitioners in mental health care, organized clubs alongside other religious after-school clubs in schools besieged by proselytizing organizations, and engaged in other advocacy in accordance with our tenets.”
