Emergency Plumber Calgary: Finding Reliable Help When You Need It Most
An emergency plumber Calgary issue can be a major disruption, whether it's a burst pipe, backed-up drain, or malfunctioning water heater. In Calgary, with its harsh winters and fluctuating temperatures, the need for quick and reliable plumbing assistance is even more crucial. Hereâs what you should know about finding an emergency plumber in Calgary and what to expect from quality service providers.
1. Common Plumbing Emergencies in Calgary
Burst Pipes: Calgaryâs cold winters put pipes at risk of freezing and bursting, especially in uninsulated or exposed areas.
Clogged Drains: Blockages in drains are common, and can lead to sewage backup if left untreated.
Malfunctioning Water Heaters: Cold showers are unpleasant, especially during Calgary winters. Water heaters that break down need prompt repair to restore hot water supply.
Flooding Due to Heavy Rain or Snow Melt: Calgaryâs changing weather can sometimes result in unexpected flooding, especially during spring melts or heavy rain.
2. What to Look for in an Emergency Plumber
24/7 Availability: Look for a plumbing service thatâs available around the clock. Emergencies can strike any time, and waiting too long can lead to water damage or health risks.
Licensed and Insured: Professionalism and safety matter in plumbing. Licensed plumbers have the training to handle various emergencies, while insurance protects you and the plumber if anything goes wrong.
Quick Response Times: When calling an emergency plumber, ask about their estimated response time. Reputable Calgary plumbers typically offer an arrival time and update you if there are delays.
Transparent Pricing: Emergency plumbing often comes with higher costs due to immediate service needs. Look for a company that provides upfront, transparent pricing to avoid unexpected expenses.
3. Top Emergency Plumbing Services in Calgary
24/7 Emergency Plumbing Inc.: Known for its quick response and skilled plumbers, they offer solutions for burst pipes, leaks, and clogs. Many reviews highlight their commitment to customer service.
Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Calgary: This well-established company offers emergency plumbing services with transparent pricing and certified plumbers.
ClearView Services: Known for its heating and plumbing expertise, ClearView offers 24/7 emergency services with trained professionals for various issues, from frozen pipes to sewage backups.
4. Preventive Measures to Avoid Plumbing Emergencies
Winterize Your Pipes: Insulate pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements and garages, to prevent freezing and bursting.
Regular Drain Cleaning: Schedule annual drain cleaning to avoid buildup and blockages.
Inspect Water Heaters Annually: Regular maintenance can extend the life of your water heater and help you avoid breakdowns during cold seasons.
Install a Sump Pump: If you live in a flood-prone area, a sump pump can help manage excess water, especially during Calgary's spring thaw.
5. What to Expect During an Emergency Plumbing Call
Initial Assessment: The plumber will typically assess the situation over the phone and provide preliminary guidance on mitigating damage (e.g., turning off water supply).
On-Site Inspection: Upon arrival, the plumber will conduct a thorough inspection to identify the cause and extent of the issue.
Repairs and Recommendations: Once the problem is identified, the plumber will discuss repair options and costs. They may also recommend preventive measures to avoid future issues.
Cleanup and Follow-Up: After repairs, a professional plumber will ensure that the area is clean and that all systems are functioning properly before leaving.
6. Costs and Insurance
Emergency plumbing services are usually more expensive due to their urgent nature and off-hour calls. However, the price can vary depending on the time, severity, and required parts. Homeowner insurance may cover some emergency plumbing costs if the issue results from covered incidents, so it's beneficial to check your policy.
7. Benefits of Choosing a Local Calgary Plumber
Familiarity with Local Conditions: Local plumbers understand Calgaryâs unique plumbing challenges, including extreme temperatures and specific city codes.
Quicker Response Times: A local plumber can typically arrive faster than companies based outside of Calgary, reducing potential water damage and other risks.
Final Thoughts
When a plumbing emergency strikes, a trustworthy, professional emergency plumber can be a lifesaver. Calgary offers numerous options for emergency plumbing services, but itâs essential to choose one with a good reputation, quick response time, and transparent pricing. By preparing in advance and understanding what to expect, you can minimize stress and quickly resolve plumbing issues as they arise.

Today is my last full day in Calgary and to tell you the truth I enjoyed my short excursion here.
I am not going to lie I was a bit apprehensive. From what I heard from others, Edmontonians and Vancouverites who honestly should be the last people to you listen to in regards to Calgary given both are rivals of Calgary but when I came here I felt like Obi Wan walking into the Death Star but in all honesty I have had fun.
As you can probably tell I did eventually get my flight which was just a hour flight. By the time I got to Calgary though I only really had enough time to check in and get to the Beer Market for the game.
I guess one knock I have of Calgary is they do not have a train to the airport which is very odd because as I rode the 100 train most of what was around me was open ground, more than enough room to lay track to the airport but alas.
I checked into my Airbnb which was thankfully not too far from my train stop however I started to notice something that I feel is unique to CalgaryâŚ..lots of ice.
Being born and raised in Northern Alberta as I am no stranger to ice but not like this. The ice we deal with is usually on the roads and black. Here it is just ice like everything was melted but before it could leave it would freeze up again as ice. I walked through the ice everywhere. I guess that is the chinook wind thing. Cold snaps followed by warm snaps followed by cold, no time for the ice to melt and go.
I made my way to the Beer Market because I knew it had my favourite Canadian made hefeweizen Fahr Away Hefe but also the brewmaster chicken sandwich. I wore my Kipprusoff jersey expecting to be in a bar full Flames fans, I wore the jersey in hopes to fit in and to take in the atmosphere. What wound up happening was the opposite. It was me who stuck out like a sore thumb being the only one wearing a Flames jersey in a Calgary barâŚâŚodd.
I came to realize that this bar was situated within the business area of downtown Calgary, all of the people there all had business suits and business attire. I got multiple looks like I was in the wrong place but oh well I wanted my beer and sandwich.
5 beers, a sandwich and 2 Alberta loses later I made my way back to the Airbnb and fell asleep.
This Airbnb is a bit different from the others in that I am sharing the house with other visitors who all are doing their own thing. I could tell the hosts probably had a few shit wits because there were signs and instructions everywhere to clean up after yourself like people werenât in the past. The one odd thing was having to use the squeegee after showering, I found that to be odd but I get it plus their house their rules.
Friday morning I made my way downtown and had breakfast at OEB Breakfast. After filling on eggs Benny I would spend the next 5 hours walking in and around Calgary Jayne hatting everywhere I could. I had about 15 statues to Jayne hat however I was only able to get to do 9 ish. Some statues were barricades, the Van Gogh statue was way too big and two statues were heavily guarded. One didnât even exist which is my own stupidity really but it makes for a funny storyâŚ.for me anyways.
So a few days before my trip I try to map out where the statues are and how I plan on getting to them. Online I thought there was a Nikolas Tesla statue at the University of Calgary. I mapped out where I thought it was and when I got there it was not there. I made a circle around the place. Confused I looked at the picture and tried to gauge where it could be. It wasnât till I actually read the article that the statue doesnât exists but a certain group in the school wanted it to. It wasnât a complete waste going there as I did find one statue I didnât know was there but I knew I would find at least one there. If I looked hard enough I would have found more but this was going to be my last statue of the day and after 5 hours of walking I was done.
I made my way to the 2 Pillars Brewery not really expecting anything from the place, was going to try their witbier and be on my way it wasnât till I came in and discovered that they had a hefe and the brewer knew the guy who made the Fahr away hefe. And I could tell it tasted nearly exactly like it, not entirely but close enough.
Who knew that the two best hefes in Canada are in the Calgary and the surrounding area. He suggested I try his ipa, at first I said no because I hate ipas but this guy loved hefes like I do and told me to trust him and try it as it is not like a regular ipa and what can I sayâŚ..I found an ipa I love.
As I was sitting there I was trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my day and decided to see if anything was going on at the Saddledom which is Calgaryâs hockey arena. I discovered there was a lacrosse game so I decided well I guess that is my night.
I have been lucky enough to been in all but two major nhl hockey arenas now, Winnipeg and Montrealâs. As before I heard a lot of bad things about the saddledome and to be perfectly honest while I can see where they were coming from I actually love the look.
It felt like I walked into the underground lair of the free people in the Demolition Man movie, that post apocalyptic feeling like bad shit happened here but it is still a place where people go. It had something that I feel many of the stadiums I have been to donât haveâŚ.character.
It owns its look and I am not going to lie I love it. I have been to a Toronto Rock game in Torontoâs Air Canada Centre (I know itâs called something else now but I donât care) and I have been to a few Vancouver Warriors games at Rogerâs Arena and neither had the atmosphere this place had, for one the stadium was nearly full and it was loud and boisterous. It was so completely and utterly Alberta in everything it was doing.
After the game I made my way back home and called it a night. So now I am here and I just finished my traditional French Toast on the road which was ok trying to ignore old Conservatives blame everyone but their own politicians for things but whatever. I got two more statues to Jayne hat then I will go and see a move or two. I donât have wifi as I am writing the is so I will complete this and post it when I did and I imagine there will be more to tell.
(Few hours later)
I am now at the 2 Houses Brewery and there is another hefe I havenât tried. Why do I feel like Calgary is trying to entice me to join their ranks. If my liver/kidneys/innards in general were not in such rough shape I may take them up on it.
Like Saturday I spent the last few hours walking and Jayne hatting however nowhere close to as productive though I did finish off it all with Jayne hatting another Wood Buffalo (The animal of Alberta) and many horses near the Saddledome that I discovered leaving the lacrosse game.
I looked around the park the brewery suggested I try to Jayne hat and while I think I found where they were talking about I donât think it was a Jayne hattable thing.
I was torn between giving my liver a break and seeing two movies and calling it a day but when I realized Vancouver had those same movies I decided I will just see those movies next week. I am in Calgary I should experience what I can of Calgary while I am here especially since I have no clue when I would be back though to be honest I am not adverse to coming back especially for the beer.to be perfectly honest I am really impressed with Calgaryâs beer culture even though I have only been to 2 breweries I have tried a few Alberta beers that I think are of the area and I am really impressed. Alberta really has come a long way since I had my first Albertan craft beer in 2015 and even then it had promise.
However now it holds my 2 favourite hefes and a lot of the beers here I have had are just solid. It is a recency bias given itâs not easy to have Quebec beer outside of Quebec but I am starting to feel like Alberta should get 2nd best craft beer industry in Canada and looking at the awards in the last while it is justified. Typical west coast, quietly showing Canada how it is done. I do not know if I am ready to give Alberta the top spot, BCâs Beer overall is too consistently good and the numbers are just overwhelming but do not sleep on Alberta at all.
Well it is mid day, still lots I could do but to tell you the truth I feel stuffed and spent. I would prefer just to find a quiet or chill place to work on my writing for the day, I am not sure if it is here as it is starting to get busy.
Tomorrow I leave my Airbnb early and will probably be back in the morning. Just in time to do groceries, I love during groceries during Super Bowl because everyone is watching the game which means the grocery store is not a mad house. I will then go to bed early and get back into the grind again. I feel so out of shape though to be honest I havenât eaten that much this weekend but when I had it has been fairly unhealthy but I do not care.
In the past few weeks I feel like life is telling me to stop being afraid. I have friends with bad illnesses across the board, many whose are stuck like me but unlike me canât do much. As stuck as I feel in Vancouver I have the ability and freedom to do more of what I want and at least for now have health on my side. More and more and I am starting to feel like I donât want to care about the future anymore. What future, tomorrow I could have cancer or have a heart attack. Another aunt of mine died yesterday of a heart attack out of nowhere. Life doesnât have a fucking schedule at anytime it is going to fuck you. As much as I a, serious about keeping myself as healthy as I can despite drinking like a sailor I also feel I am cheating myself if I donât do shit while I am still able to while I am able to.
I will never be in as good of shape as I am right now, i can defer to 65 like so many but who fucking knows if I will live to be 65 and when I am 65 who knows if I would be able to adventure then the way I can now.
All I can do is limit my drinking to only when I travel or once a month which I know I can do as I just went 26 days without drinking and the cravings didnât kick in. Just keep exercising, keep eating healthy ish but still leave room for my doniar days and treating myself to French toast, eggs Benny and the cultural food of where I am.
I have all but given up on the thought that I will have love in my life, I donât think I am cut out for it. The loves in my life that I know are doable is creating and exploring and you can bet your fucking ass I am going to do it. As much as I wish I could share my adventures with someone I really donât think anyone could or would. The pain that I will never be able to grow old or share my life anyone will always leave a lasting sting with me but I refuse to let it cripple me. The only one who will break me is life or me at a speed I canât maintain. I already know I am going to fast in my head but again I really donât care anymore. I much rather be Icarus getting to close to the sun, you will never know how far you can go if you donât try and get as close as you can. I have to out run my depression at all costs. I refuse to let it control me anymore. That is difference between me at 38 than me at 28.
My next trip is Toronto, the last time I was truly in Toronto besides passing through was in 2019 thanks to work. Using my spring break days off for it again. Normally I wouldnât waste it on Toronto but I am going to see Hockey Night in Canada in its truest form and my very first basketball game. Outside of that Jayne hat where I can.
After that I think Edmonton is next, I owe one my cousin and a close friend hang out time. No one wants to or can come to me so I will come to them.
Sometime in May I will decide if I will go one more time to the land down under however if my trip to Cowtown is any indication that the love for exploration still lives itâs all but affirmed. Australia this year and turn 40 in Japan.
Shazbot nanu nanu.

Ok, your post about the Celtic burial with the adorably-repaired Greek lion cauldron came across my dash, and I just have to ask - is your URL on this blog an intentional Guy Kay reference? And if so, do you have good Guy Kay blogs recs? Heâs my favorite author of all time and I feel like heâs desperately underrepresented on my dash.
Yes, it absolutely is! And the short answer is, alas, I do not know any good GGK blogs.
Beyond this Dark House is my favourite poem, found when I was living in Calgary, breaking my heart. There was a boy I'd once driven from Edmonton to Saskatoon in four hours flat just to see who didn't love me enough, or in the way I wanted, and also I wasn't ready to be loved, which was its own kind of tragedy.
So it caught me with its prairie soul, the knowledge of the richness of life and also that things die out here and take a long long time to fade, all
The shortest night wheels past this window, stars dropping behind the trees.
Somewhere there are bonfires for St John, somewhere fires for the summer king.
It's so late. For this, for everything, for being still awake beside a window
And then the lines I took for my blog:
Beyond this dark house a train is running away into the night plain. We've all had dreams break fantasies we shaped.
I dragged the boy I was in love with and a few other friends to GGK's book tour pit stop in Calgary, where I was savagely disappointed by how badly he read a sample of Ysabel. Displayed no talent for vocal performance at all. Read almost as if he didn't know how the sentences would end, in a bad way. But you know what, we're human. Everyone's allowed to have flaws.
So the answer about GGK blogs is... I don't seek them out, and don't particularly want to be fannish about them on Tumblr. Some books are like that; some I want to shout about like I've been doing about Tamsyn Muir's Nona the Ninth on @with-my-murder-flute for the last two weeks, and some I just want to take back to my secret cave and devour them where other people can't see.
I love The Fionavar Tapestry with my entire soul, but not my entire brain, and that's uncomfortable. It's a discomfort I'm especially not up to addressing on Tumblr, because like... I don't love how tied he is to a paradigm of queerness being weighed down by heteronormativity, so that queerness is salacious and risquĂŠ or just societally sidelined and we don't address the pain that causes because everyone just takes that for granted. But I also think in some senses it's a more accurate reflection of the past than modern queer-positive fantasy, and it's important and useful to keep around reminders of what the world before gay liberation was like. I will candidly admit that I don't actually want to praise him unconditionally and hold him up as an author I would recommend to everybody. He's problematic, you know? I think a lot of his books are him trying to approach a concept, and only capturing it in wisps, and that's especially true when he tries to write about sex and gender relations.
But, the thought of sitting through Tumblr discourse about how he's homophobic and bad gay representation/not homophobic at all and very important and validating actually? Gag me with a spoon. I hate doing that about media I'm enthused with but have no personal stake in, so doing it with something I love so intimately, with pieces of my soul poured into the honeycomb of its matrix, would be torture. When I was fourteen, The Summer Tree convinced me that I'd have a life outside the depression that was crushing me like a stone. It showed me how to imagine a future for myself. I really don't want that tangled up in Tumblr wrangles.
Oh, I do have a fic rec: the late legionseagle wrote The Road Goes Ever On and On, a non-Ysabel-compliant story about a Toronto cop who can't get past the old cold missing persons case of Jennifer Lowell.
And several times a winter, especially when the icicles start to melt, I look up and chant to myself,
Too much of Greece can sear the soul. I am a northern man. Where I come from the sky is wide and far away and March is mired in snow.

We could be friends
A/N: This is a requested piece for Matthew Tkachuck. I struggled a bit, changing the intro a few times so I hope it flows well.Â
Summary: A few months after a breakup you go out with some of the Flames players for a couple drinks. You end up having a wild night with Matthew Tkachuk after you both admit to wanting this for a while.
Warnings: Drinking, swearing, mentions of cheating, smut, oral sex (male and female receiving), maybe something else?
Word Count: 6400
âHanifin" you call out âyoure getting mic'd up tonight.âÂ
He smiles while nodding to you and continues down the hall. You work for the flames as a member of the social media team, have for the past 4 and a half months. You donât really know a lot of the players on a personal level, most of them make casual small talk with you.Â
Your interactions are kept relatively short, especially on game days. Players have a ritual, and you donât want to intrude on their process. Beyond that you help with coordinating the media for team events, whether they are charity events or ones organized by the PR. During some of those events you get the opportunity to mingle a bit with the players, but as you are still at work you keep it professional.
After the game you are in the locker room unclipping the mic from Noah. Some players are conducting interviews while others have wandered off for a postgame treatment. Â
âYou coming tonight?â Â
You arenât sure if he is talking to you, even half full the room is buzzing; the boys are coming off a big win. You look up at the 6â3â defenseman who is easily 2 inches taller on his skates; he took his jersey off but waiting for the mic to come off to remove his chest protector before continuing. His light blue eyes stare down at you as he waits your response.Â
âComing where?â you ask turning the mic off.Â
âA few of us were going to grab some drinks. Didnât know if you were joining usâ he explains.Â
âNah (Y/N) doesnât come out. Iâve tried as few times but she always scurries home to her boyfriendâ Tkachuk jokes coming to his stall beside Noahâs.Â
Another reason why you donât have any real relationships with the players is Mark. You have been dating for a while, and he is insecure about the fact that you work around all men, attractive men. If you spent some time outside the hockey rink you likely would have some knowledge on the boys besides their ridiculous nicknames for each other.
You havenât wanted to cause any ripples so you never ventured out with the team. And honestly you werenât too upset about it, after working a long day you enjoyed coming home and curling up in bed with Mark. But that all changed when you came home from the road trip a few weeks ago and found him in bed with Sarah, someone you thought was your good friend.
You shoot Matt a glance and turn back to Noah âyou know I think I might come tonightâ you say, turning around and walking away out of the locker room.
2 hours later you are sitting at the booth with a couple players. You quickly ran home after the game and touched up your makeup and changed into a pair of skinny jeans and your black long sleeve turtle neck. The bar is slightly casual but you donât want to be under dressed so you throw on a pair of short heeled booties and a simple gold chain to dress it up.
A few of the older players and their significant others recently left as the time is encroaching on midnight. Some of the other players are scattered around the bar, you see Matt by the bar talking to a red head who is wearing a dress that is way too tight, and should likely have more fabric given the cool Calgary temperatures. She is laughing at one of his jokes, her hand lightly touching his forearm.
âHeâs always like thisâ Noah says from across the table. âMakes a big deal about getting us out, team bonding and crap then wanders off never to be seen again.â You laugh hearing him say this and Noah gets up to go to the bathroom. You look down at your drink and see its basically melted ice at this point and get up heading to the bar.
As you wait for the bartenderâs attention you feel a body brush up against you, you glace out the side of your eye and see light brown hair and immediately knowing who is there. The bartender walks over and you order another drink and Noah does too.
âSo Matt said you have a boyfriendâ he asks, you can tell he is just making small talk and doesnât really know what to lead with.
âUh we broke upâ you respond.
âOh, sorry to hear that.â
âDonât be, he was a crappy boyfriend I just wish I saw it soonerâ before you have a chance to continue talking and change the subject a body presses  between the two of you throwing an arm over both your shoulders.
âI canât believe we finally get you out, and you decide to drink that garbage. I know you didnât drink a lot but come on, 15 year olds drink that. Thought you would have acquired some tolerance by nowâ Matt says mocking your safe beer choice. âNo hard liquor, and you went for a light beer too.â
Without responding you flag the bartender down who walks up to you âcan I get four tequila shots?â
You turn your attention back to Matt âI like the taste of beer. But I went to school for communication I learned how to handle my alcoholâ you say throwing back one of the tequila shots with ease.
âNo salt or lime?â Noah asks watching you.
âDonât need training wheelsâ you reply handing each of the boys a shot.
âNah Iâm good. I learned a while ago not to drink that poison. Have funâ he jokes setting his shot down and walking away.
âGuess you have to take twoâ you say as Matt shifts more of his weight to you, his hand sliding down to your mid back. You look around him to the red head that is shooting you daggers as she watches her hard work begin to unravel. You chuckle slightly because you know you wonât be going home with Matt tonight, given the choice he would obviously take home the red head.
Matt throws the first shot back, making a face as it burns going down his throat. He sets the empty glass on the bar before pulling your face close to his mouth so he doesnât have to yell over the music.
âMaybe you should give me the passcode for your phone. That way when you start puking in the bathroom I can call your boyfriend to come get youâ he jokes taking a sip of his whiskey.
âIâll be fine, besides your little friend wonât take too kindly to me handing you my phone. She already looks like she is going to kill me just for talking to you.â You pass him the second shot and you both cheers before throwing it back, feeling the liquid slide down your throat. Matt gently squeezes your waist, likely an involuntary response to the burning from the tequila.
âIâm not too worried about herâ he says placing the glass on the counter and sliding his hand further down your back, his pinky an inch above your jeans. You begin to feel a fire ignite in your core, a feeling you havenât felt in a while. You play it off as the tequila playing games on you, youâre reading into this. There is no way Matt is flirting with you, he likely hasnât even noticed where his hand is resting.
âSo is your boy out of town or something?â he asks. You shoot him a questioning glance âyou never come out, figured if you are itâs because he is away and wonât knowâ he continues. You flag down the bartender and motion for three more shots.
You donât answer instead you turn your body slightly to face the bar, but stick your ass out a bit. You immediately throw one of the shots back, wincing slightly at the burn. You feel Mattâs hand slide off your back before you speak âno he is in town I think.â
âYou think?â he asks sliding up beside you, leaning on his arm against the bar.
âWell I stopped caring what he was doing or where he was going when we broke upâ you explain looking up at his dirty blonde curls.
âOh sorry to hear thatâ he says smirking.
âNo youâre notâ you laugh back at him.
âYeah, break ups suck. If you need anything, I mean I know we donât know each other that wellâŚâ
âIâve been doing alright, and these tequila I put on your tab have also helpedâ you smile at him inching closer to him. âBut it happened like almost 2 months ago, so Iâm actually pretty good.
âTwo months, how did you keep it a secret?â
âWell it happened right before Christmas, and after the break there was the road trip but I didnât go on it. And then it was all-star break. Havenât actually worked a lot, and we arenât really that good of friends. I didnât consider you a top priority in informing of my personal lifeâ you explain taking another shot.
Matt stands at the bar, holding the shot in his hand. He sways it in his hands staring at you for a minute. âMaybe we can change thatâ he says taking the shot, placing the glass upside down on the bar.
âChange what?â you ask.
âUs not being friends, we could be friendsâ he says moving closer, his thigh pressing against you. You roll your eyes at him âwhy canât we be friends? We can go shopping, grab lunch. Send some text messages, maybe see a movie every now and thenâ his mouth is inches from your ear. You feel your knees get weak, wetness pooling in your core as you breathe in his cologne.
âMattyâ you hear someone calls from behind you. Matt steps away from you and turns his attention to the voice, you look over your shoulder even though you know who is there. Up close you notice how her boobs are practically popping from her dress, and she likely spent hours doing her hair and makeup.
âYeahâ he replies slightly annoyed.
She walks up to him and is practically pressed against you, pushing you out of the way trying to capture his attention.
âWant to do a shot?â she asks coyly.
âYou know I think Iâm good, weâve already done a coupleâ he says eyeing over to you. The red head follows his gaze, shooting you a scowl.
âWell I think we weâre thinking of heading to another bar soon anyways. This place is getting kind of boring.â
âOh well have funâ he says to her. You immediately see anger bubble in her face, you turn away so she doesnât see you laugh.
âYou donât want to come?â she whines.
âNo I think Iâm going to stay and chat with my good friend (Y/N). You have a good night.â He turns his back to her and you hear her huff out a breath of air as her heels click away. Matt looks at you and seeâs the large grin on your face and he shakes his head.
âI donât know what was better. That little interaction or you calling me your good friend.â âWe could be good friends, she doesnât knowâ he retorts putting his elbows on the bar beside you. âSo tell me friend why did you and your boyfriend break up?â
Your eyes narrow slightly as you stare at him âgood friends know about each otherâs relationships. Like as my good friend you know I am single.â
He stops talking waiting for your response âhe slept with my good friend Sarah. Part of the reason Iâm not looking for any more good friends at the momentâ you reply.
âWell as your good friend I promise to not sleep with any guys you dateâ he says smiling.
âWhat if I date a girl?â you ask.
âI promise I wonât sleep with anyone you date, man or woman. No real friend would do thatâ he takes a slow sip of his whiskey. âYou date woman too?â he asks.
âI have, yesâ you take a sip. âAs my friend do you have a problem with that?â
âOh the contrary. As your friend I just want you to be happy.â You shake your head at him and chuckle âyou sure youâre okay though being cheated on sucks.â
You stare up into his eyes and see concern and  sincerity looking back at you, making you think maybe he has some experience with this. You were going to make some smart ass comment about what girl broke his heart but you feel maybe this isnât something he wants to joke about.
âWe were together just under two years but since we broke up I realized how much of myself I lost. Before him I had a lot of friends, guys and girls; but early on we got in some fights on about him being uncomfortable with me hanging out with my guy friends. He thought I wanted to sleep with some of them and I would cheat which is so ironic nowâ you take a slow sip of your beer before continuing. âI just didnât want to cause problems with him, found it easier to just not see them to avoid a fight. I mean I shouldnât have given up my friends, but I saw some of them at the holidays. Iâm thankful all of my old friends, guys and girls, were willing to let me back in. But I havenât been this happy in a whileâ you say smiling.
âWell thatâs good, if youâre happy then Iâm happy for you friendâ he says playfully nudging you.
âOkay good friend, tell me some things you know about meâ you joke.
He stares at you for a second âif weâre good friends you should know basic stuff like my birthday, where Iâm from, favourite colour. I donât know how we can be friends if all we know is the other person is singleâ you say smiling.
Mattâs eyes narrow, you can see the wheels turning in his brain as he takes a sip. He sets the empty glass on the bar, taking a deep breath. âYour favourite colour is (Y/F/C); you grew up in Calgary. You like tea instead of coffee, you love the show Friends, made obvious by your Friends mug and t-shirt you have rocked at the arena. You have a major sweet tooth, but not a big fan of salty, and prefer white to red wine.â He continues to ramble on a few more facts about you before you finally cut him off âhow do you know all this?â
âYou caught my attention on day one, but there is still lots I donât know.â
You turn your head to him slightly âlike what?â you ask him taking a sip.
He steps closer, his thigh pressing to the back of your legs âwhat it takes to make your toes curl. What it sounds like when you moan.â
You choke on your drink and start coughing as you try and capture your breath. âWhat?â you croak out.
You feel his hand return onto the small of your back, his pinky slides through your belt loop. You take a gulp as he grins, his mouth inches from your ear. âI have thought about this since the first day I saw you, what you look like under that shirt. What you taste like, what you feel likeâ he stops as a shiver runs down your spine.
His hand slips slightly further down, resting above your ass. âTell me you havenât thought of this and I will walk away right now, act as this never happened.â
You consider his words, and remember the first time you met him. The first time you saw him was in the locker room, he was in jeans and a tight black t-shirt.
ââThis is the boys locker roomâ Sarah says opening the door. You walk in and see the back of a man who is standing at his locker, he has on a simple outfit with a backwards baseball cap. You can see his blond curls sticking out the sides of his hat, he hears people enter and quickly turns around.
âOh sorry Matt I didnât think anyone was in yetâ Sarah explains as your eyes lock on his.
âOh no worries I got her early to get my things set up. I donât think anyone is supposed to be here for another hourâ he explains smiling taking a few steps towards you.
âThis is (Y/N), she is starting with social media and team engagement. Iâm just giving her a tour of the building.â
âNice to meet you, Iâm Mattâ he says sticking his hand out which you accept smiling back at him. You know who he is, and youâd be lying if you said you didnât have a crush on him. Being a Flames fan your whole life you knew who the players were, but watching him on the ice the last couple years you developed a middle school crush on him. He skated around the rink with such ease and he seemed like someone who is fun to be around, someone who can make you laugh all the time.
Feeling his hand on yours, the same hands that you watch get in fights, Â makes you begin to wonder what else they can do. You imagine what his body would look like under his shirt, your juices running down his chin. You get lost in his eyes, and donât realize you still are holding his hand until Sarah calls you to continue the tour. You shake your head and immediately release his hand, your cheeks going red.
Matt smirks at you, running his thumb on his chin âlook forward to working with youâ he calls out as you turn to hide your embarrassment.
Matt is still staring at you, a sideways smirk on his face waiting for you to respond. You quickly turn your head away and whisper a soft no.
âReally? The redness on your cheek says otherwise. It tells me I am right, you have thought of thisâ he says shooting you a devilish grin. His mouth is now inches from your ear âtell me when your home alone, lying in bed. And you slip your fingers, actually you probably have a vibrator or twoâ
âOr threeâ you whisper softly. Matt heard you because he groans before he continues âso when you turn on your vibrator and slide it in, what do you think of? What gets you going? When you fucked your ex whose face did you picture when you would cum?â he gives your ass a light squeeze, as you feel his warm breath on your neck. You are practically dripping at his words, but you wait knowing he isnât done âIâll be honest, Iâve thought of you over the past few months. Weâve had some great times in my mind.â
âSo tell me, have you had to bite your lip from screaming my name?â
âNoâ you reply lightly knowing that isnât the answer he is looking for. You feel him tense up but before he moves away, you continue âI didnât have to, because Mark never made meâŚhe neverâŚâ you pause for  a minute, flustered and unsure of why you are telling him this.
âHe never made you cum?â Matt growls in your ear and you just shake your head in response. You turn your head to look at him âif you let me Iâll make up for the shitty sex and-â unsure what has come over you, you lean forward attaching your lips to his. His one hand firmly grips your ass while his other slides up to cup your face, your mouth opens allowing him more room.
You turn around in his arms, sliding your hand up to grab his bicep as your tongues dance in each otherâs mouths. You feel a body nudge into you slightly and you suddenly become very aware you are making out with someone in the middle of the bar. You pull away gasping for air and whisper against his lips âtake me home.â
Matt doesnât respond instead he throws some bills on the bar quickly and pulls you out the door. You donât even have time to zip up your coat on before he is opening the cab door and pushing you in. You slide across to the far seat and Matt crawls in sitting beside you. You smirk at him as you lean against the corner of the seat and door.
Matt tells the driver his address as the meter starts âthere is a $50 tip if you keep your eyes on the roadâ he says, eyes dark with lust. Before you can respond he crawls over to you and slides his tongue back in your mouth, his hand slides up and down your stomach. This kiss is fast and passionate similar to the one in the bar, his hand slides under the fabric of the shirt and you pull away.
Your eyes go wide and Matt is smirking down at you. You shoot your eyes to the taxi driver âwhat if he looksâ you whisper to him. Matt just smirks and sits up in the middle seat, pulling you to his lap.
âCanât see anything nowâ he whispers before sucking on your neck. His hands are on your ass but are hidden from the driver thanks to your long coat. You rock your hips against him, feeling the outline of his bulge.
âCareful babyâ he warns against your neck. You bite your lip as Matt begins nipping on your neck, you rock your hips more, getting closer to ensure Matt can feel it through the jeans.
âLast warningâ he hums in your ear sucking on your ear lobe. This doesnât stop you, in fact it encourages you to keep going. Mattâs hands come around to the front of your jeans and quickly undo the button and zipper. He brings his lips up to yours and starts kissing you, when you feel him shove his hand inside.
He pushes your soaked underwear to the side and thrusts two fingers inside of you. You pull back and take a gasp of air âI warned you babygirlâ he chuckles as his fingers begin to move inside of you. You burry your head into the crook of his neck as he continues to pump his fingers inside of you âcanât wait until we get homeâ he whispers. His thumb begins to press circles on your clit as his other hand massages your breast.
âCanât wait until I get to hear you screamâ he sucks on your neck increasing the pace of his fingers. You feel your orgasm quickly approaching, maybe because itâs been so long since another person has given you one, or itâs the tequila shots. Or itâs the fact that youâre in public with a stranger mere feet from you, something you never imagined yourself doing. Maybe itâs a combination but all you know is your orgasm is seconds away.
âMatt pleaseâ you whisper likely a little too loud.
He instead kisses your jaw âyou gonna cumâ he whispers. Unable to respond you nod and his fingers increase their pace. You grip Mattâs waist and bite his shoulder to try and supress your moans as he pumps you through it. You feel your walls spasm as liquid spills out coating his fingers, when you finish you rest your forehead on his shoulder and take a deep breath.
You feel his hand come out of your jeans as he gives your ass one final squeeze âweâre here.â
You look around and realize you were unaware the taxi had stopped, and you donât even know how long you have been stopped. You roll off Matt as he pulls a $100 out of his wallet for the $20 fare. You jump out of the taxi, Matt quickly behind you. You stop on the sidewalk and attempt to do up your pants as his hands wrap around you âdonât bother, theyâll be on my floor in 2 minutes.â
Before you can react he pulls you inside to the elevator. You pull your coat in front of you, so nobody would know as you feel your cheeks flush. The doors ding close and Matt walks over standing in front of you. He gently lifts your head up to look at him âyou okay?â he gently asks. âWe donât have to do anything. I have a spare room, I can drive you home in the morning. Whatever youâre comfortable with, if itâs too soon since ââ
âNo itâs not that, I just canât believe I did that. I let you finger me in a taxi, I had an orgasm and he was less than a foot away, I just canât believe-â
âHeyâ Matt says lightly kissing your forehead âfirst of all it was super-hot; like super-hot. I have never done anything like that before but fuck that was incredible. Two he received a very generous tip, and he could have kicked us out at any point. Besides I doubt he heard anything, you bit me pretty hard; I donât think any sounds came out.â
You smile up at him, feeling more at ease so you lean in and kiss him. âIt was a heat of the moment, next time I promise to wait until were in my apartment; assuming you want a next time.â
âAt least a room with a lock on the doorâ you joke kissing him before the elevator dings for his floor.
âDealâ he says taking your hand and leading you down the hall. He unlocks the door and helps you out of your coat. You unzip your boots as Matt looks at you âwant a drink or anything?â
You just smile and shake your head, walking towards him closing the gap between you. You jump up into his arms, he catches you with ease as he chuckles. You look into his eyes, fingers running through his curls âI want to see your bedâ you say attaching your mouth to his neck.
Matt grans and carries you down the hall, stopping for a minute to turn on the bedroom light then he drops you on the bed. He grabs your ankles and pulls your jeans off your legs. A devilish grin spreads on his face before he crawls onto the bed and opens your legs. He smiles seeing the wetness in your underwear, as he hooks a finger into them pulling them down your legs.
He lies down on the bed, placing your legs over his shoulders and begins to lick some of the juices that remain from the taxi ride. âFuckâ he mumbles licking you clean âbetter than I imagined.â His mouth begins places kisses on your pussy, causing your legs to squirm slightly. His tongue slides inside your walls and begins to lick the inside of you.
His tongue begins flicking the inside of your pussy, your back arches off the mattress while Matt chuckles below you. He throws an arm over your waist pinning you to the bed. Your hands slide down to his hair, firmly tangling in them as his tongue continues exploring inside you.
His tongue becomes more intense pressing inside of you; he licks circles on your clit, your legs tightening around his head. You try to grind your hips, searching for more friction but he has you pinned down and laughs at your attempts.
âKeep it up and Iâll tie you to the bedâ he growls before diving back in. He begins to suck on your clit for a minute before switching it with his thumb. He begins pressing circles on you as his tongue slides back inside.
Your moans become louder as your second high approaches. Your body tenses and you jolt slightly before your pussy spasms, warm liquid spills out as Matt continues to fuck you with his tongue. Matt slows his tongue as you finish, he pulls away looking up at you; your juices covering his mouth and chin.
Matt puts your legs back on the bed, and sits on his heels pulling his shirt off, exposing his hard chiseled chest. Â You take him in, trying to catch your breath as he pulls his jeans off leaving him in his boxers. You can see his obvious bulge, straining the fabric waiting to be released. Matt leans down engaging you in a kiss, you can taste yourself on him, as your hands wander his bare back.
His hand slides under your shirt and pulls it over your head exposing your breasts. He leans down placing soft kisses on your stomach while his hand slips behind you undoing your clasp leaving you naked.
âFuck youâre gorgeousâ he says attaching his mouth to your breast and swirls his tongue around your nipple. You bring your hands down to the elastic of his boxer, and start to push them down his thighs, Matt helps and throws them on the floor.
You feel him line his cock up with your entrance, his tip grazing your folds. His mouth alternates sucking and nipping your neck and collarbone as he leans over to reach in the bedside table to pull out a condom. He pulls away when you reach up and grab the wrapper, placing it on the table. Matt looks confused as he stares down at you, but you have to have him in your mouth first so you push him on his back and straddle him.
You rock your hips over his hard dick a couple times before sliding down his thighs, your index finger runs down his abs to his treasure line. Finally you look down at Matt and your jaw drops a blush coming over your cheeks. Matt is average or maybe slightly longer than average but he is thick, you can tell he will destroy you, but thatâs a problem for later.
You drop your head down and lick up his shaft, placing a kiss on his tip. Matt moans under you as you bring a hand and lift his cock sliding it in your mouth, gagging slightly as you taste his salty precum. You swirl your tongue around the tip as you bob on him, eventually taking him all in.
As he hits the back of your throat you gag again but keep going, bringing your hand up to massage his balls. You feel some spit begin to dribble down your chin, while Matt brings his hands to your hair. You expect him to pull it away from your face but instead he Matt pulls you off of him.
âI promised to make up for the shitty sex youâve been having. That I wanted to make your toes curl while you screamed my name.â A pout comes across your face and Matt just laughs grabbing the condom and sliding it on, âif you keep doing that I wonât last.â He pulls you down for a kiss, and tries to push you on his back but you stop him âI want to ride youâ you whisper pulling away.
âFuckâ Matt mumbles lining himself up with your folds. You quickly drop down, moaning loudly as you feel your walls being stretched by his width. You donât give yourself time to adjust, you rise up almost completely and drop back down a few times.
âJesus babe, you could have taken a momentâ he moans putting his hands on your hips.
You place your right hand on his abs âI was worried if I waited I would get scared by the sizeâ you joke setting a fast pace.
Mattâs hands grip your hips tightly as he fucks up into you âyouâre so tight babeâ he groans while you roll your hips on him. You feel your walls stretch around his thick cock, his fingers digging into your hips leaving marks.
Your breasts bounce up and down as you ride Matt as you increase the pace. He slaps your ass âfuck Iâm not gonna lastâ he groans pulling your face down to kiss you. You feel your orgasm approaching and moan into the kiss .
âYou close babygirlâ he asks against your lips. Instead of responding, you slide your hands to his hair and kiss him. Matt keeps the pace, fucking up into you, pulling you down onto his cock with every thrust.
âMattâ you moan, knowing you are close.
âCum for me (Y/N). I need you to cum for meâ he moans becoming sloppy under you.
He slaps your ass one more time causing you to yelp as your walls tighten around him. You scream his name and a mixture of curse words as you spasm around him.
âFucking hellâ you hear Matt mumble before he spills inside the condom deep inside your cervix. You collapse on top of him and lie there for a minute. He gently runs his hands through your hair while both of your breathing steadies. Finally you pull yourself onto your forearms and look at Matt. He gently runs his finger up your arm as he softly kisses you.
âThat was amazingâ you mumble against his lips.
âMhmâ he hums rolling you onto your back and slowly pulling out. You whine at the empty feeling while Matt chuckles, leaving for the bathroom. You hear the shower start and Matt comes back to the room pulling you up from the bed so you are sitting on your heels. His hands slide around you to your back, and firmly grip your ass as he pulls you against his sweaty chest. Your hands tangle in his wet curls as you pull him in for a kiss âyour sweatyâ you joke attempting to push him off.
He pulls you in close, your breasts pressed into his chest. He dips down slightly and picks you up carrying you to the shower. He sets you down and steps into the warm stream, running his hands through his hair. Matt walks up behind you, and kisses your neck.
âSo did I make up for all the shitty sex you were having?â he asks.
âI feel like one amazing night doesnât make up for almost two years of crappy sexâ you say laughing. âProbably have to do it one or ten more times.â Matt laughs in your ear kissing your shoulder âsounds good.â
You push your ass back against his semi-hard penis and he moans. Matt mumbles a fuck as you stand up straight letting the water hit you. You feel his hands on your waist as he presses his dick between your as cheeks; his mouth sucks on your earlobe.
â(Y/N)â he moans as you grind your hips back, feeling him harder behind you. âYou have any idea what you do to me?â he growls. You turn your head and look at him, water is running down his chest âI have an ideaâ you moan. You reach behind you, and grip his shaft and begin stroking it up and down âyou have any idea what this does to me?â
âI need you Mattâ you whisper kissing him.
Matt steps away and opens the door, grabbing condom from the vanity drawer. He quickly rolls it on himself and he steps back behind you, placing a hand on your back. You feel him push inside, stretching your walls, as you brace yourself on the bench.
Matt uses a knee to spread your legs wider, pulling out and pushing back in. You cry out as he hits you deep, ramming into your cervix. His hands move to your hips and use them to pull you back against him. He pulls almost completely out, pulling your hips back and slamming back inside of you.
âFuckâ you cry out.
âGod you feel so goodâ Matt mumbles setting a fast pace.
One hand leaves your hip and slaps your ass, as you jolt forward wincing at the pain. His hand returns to your hip, and continues to thrust in and out of you.
âYouâre so fucking tightâ he groans. The sound of skin flapping and moans fill the bathroom as he keeps his pace. He spreads your ass cheeks wider, pumping in and out of you. His thumb grazes over the entrance to your hole, while you whimper under him.
âYou gonna cum for me?â he asks drawing a grunt from you, unsure if you can have another.
âI know you can. Do it for meâ he growls behind you. You bring a hand down to your sensitive bud and start pressing circles on it, as Mattâs hand strokes your ass.
Mattâs pace is fast and erratic; you can tell he is close while he hits you at a deep angle, hitting your g-spot with every thrust.
âCome on babyâ he cries out behind you. You know he is straining to keep going, waiting for you. You press hard circles into your bud; Matt bends his knees changing the angle slightly. Your walls begin to tighten as you clench around him. An intense orgasm rips through as Matt keeps his pace.
âFuck Mattâ you moan, your eyes roll back into your head. You feel Mattâs dick twitch, as he spills inside the condom. Matt stills behind you, you take a deep breath. Mattâs hand caresses your back for a moment as he finally pulls out. You turn around and sit on the bench while Matt steps out to throw away the condom.
He returns to the shower, adjusting the temperature to have more hot water. He grabs your hands and pulls you to your feet; you fall against his chest as he strokes your hair. Your arms wrap around his waist, bracing yourself on him.
You feel him put some shampoo in your hair, lathering it in before gently washing it out. He gently applies body wash to you before rinsing it, you lean against the wall as he completes the process on himself. He turns the water off, kissing you and opening the door to wrap a towel around you. He puts on a pair of boxers, and pulls a t-shirt over your head.
Your eyes are heavy as you stand in his bathroom, leaning against his vanity. Matt chuckles kissing your cheek, he carefully scoops you up and carries you to his bed. He gently lies you down and pulls you into his chest, while pulling the duvet up your chest. You listen to his breathing and slowly begin to doze off.

September + Edmonton Edventures
Whoops, itâs been a while since I last posted. September was very busy since Iâm now nearing the end of my time here in Calgary.Â
I did get the chance to do a few hiking trips around Lake Louise and Larch Valley and Iâve shared pics on facebook of those. I also ran a 10 k race and finished in a very respectable 55 mins (I actually surprised myself given my lack of training leading up to the event). But other than that most of September was spent in the lab frantically trying to finish everything I need to get done before I go home, and the time has just flown by.
October in Calgary has been unusually cold so far. Last week we got 30 cm of snow overnight which caused chaos with traffic. It surprised me because I assumed Calgarians would be used to the snow but apparently this happens every year. The buses arenât well-equipped for driving in the snow which led to a lot of transit delays and stranded buses, and the roads were very wet and slippery so traffic was slow. I have to say, Iâm not a huge fan of the snow. Itâs not too cold but makes it very hard to get around, especially when you donât know if youâre going to step on solid ground or have your boot and ankle consumed by a foot of cold, wet stuff.Â
It does look pretty though.
This weekend, a friend and I took the chance to escape the snow and head 3 hours north to Edmonton. Edmonton is the capital of Alberta and a little smaller than Calgary. Thereâs not heaps to do there but I wanted to go just for one night to take a look around.
We managed to get a good deal so we stayed at the Fairmont Hotel with river views.Â
We arrived Friday night, so after checking in we headed to Whyte Ave to get dinner at DaDeOâs - a â50s style diner serving Cajun/Creole cuisine. It was pretty neat; the decor was cool and this was the first time Iâve had proper New Orleans food.
The sweet potato fries were delicious and the ribs just melted off the bone - highly recommend if youâre ever in Edmonton.
In the morning we get breakfast in downtown and explored a little market that was set up along the street. I was excited to find a company selling Southern-Hemisphere style meat pies ( they donât make them right here!) but unfortunately it was 9am and I had nowhere to store a frozen pie for the day so I will have to wait until I get home for my pie fix.
After breakfast, we took the funicular down to the river before checking out.
Our next destination for the morning was the Duchess Bakeshop. Seriously, check out their website. Everything looks so delicious! I got a Brioche PĂŠpin, which is vanilla pastry cream and milk folded into brioche dough. Iâve never tried one before and I really enjoyed it, even though Iâm not much of a cream person. It was a bit like french toast.Â
Of course, no trip to Edmonton would be complete without stopping by North Americaâs Largest Indoor Mall. Inside the mall, there was a petting zoo, water park, Sea Life exhibit with a seal show, hotel, ice-skating rink, and an indoor theme park with full-size rollercoasters.Â
Once we were finished exploring the mall it was time for the long, flat drive back to Calgary. All in all it was a pretty short and sweet trip but I enjoyed some amazing food and saw some crazy things. Cheers Edmonton, you were fun.
This week is my last week in the lab in Calgary. Mum, Dad and Holly are arriving on Saturday afternoon and I am looking forward to their visit. After they leave Iâm planning to take a short trip to the US to Seattle and then to visit Uncle Greg and family in Oregon before I fly home on the 31st of October.Â

On violence against autistic people having meltdowns.
Full text:
****
In the coverage of the Calgary incident, I've seen the statement that one of the reasons it is bad that the police beat the kid up is that parents often rely on first responders to get autistics under control. The poor parents, they called for help, and their child was harmed.
Forget trauma-informed care. Let's talk about trauma-informed families. Let's talk about trauma-informed disability advocacy.
What we are talking about is usually meltdown which, contrary to what the "experts" keep saying, is not a "tantrum" or a "mental or behavioral health crisis" or "rage behaviors" or whatever. It is being pushed so far beyond your ability to cope that you just fall apart. Contrary to what the "experts" say, it does not happen "for attention" or "for escape" or "for tangibles" or "for no reason." It happens because people are pushed so far beyond their ability to cope that they just fall apart. Contrary to what the "experts" say, it is not actually a symptom of autism. It is a symptom of being expected to survive in an environment that demands so much greater ability to cope than you can muster, that you just fall apart. And it happens to autistic people with some regularity because autistic people are regularly forced to live in environments that are full of things that are impossible for them to cope with.
When you cannot cope with the demands of life, what do you need? A break. Kindness. A moment of comfort. It may not look the same for us all, but we all want whatever it looks like for us, don't we?
What is the standard "treatment" for overwhelming demands and inaccessible environments that autistics get? Training in how not to assert themselves to get their needs met. If your shirt hurts and you take it off, you get put on a program to teach you not to remove things that hurt you from your body. If the fluorescent lights in your classroom are messing with your brain and you leave, you get put on a program to teach you to stay where people want you. If people are speaking too fast, too loud, too unclearly and you protest, you get put on a program to teach you to be a pleasant conversation partner. When the world pushes you so hard that you think you can't cope, and you try to protect yourself, the world responds by pushing harder. And eventually you either assert yourself in a way that nobody can silence (and then they come down on you even harder), or you snap and melt down.
At that point, for many of us, the people around you resort to violence. Or at least the threat of violence. Restraints, seclusion, Level III aversives, first responders and the like. Bringing a person with a loaded gun to manage someone is an act of violence. Transporting someone against their will to a place where people will manage them is a form of violence. And in the case of meltdown, it is violence in response to something that people cannot control.
You know you are getting off easy when all your "friends" do to you is belittle you, ostracise you, berate you, mock you, ablesplain to you how to cope, cut you off from your support system, and the like.... Because they could just have you declared violent, carted off to an institutional setting, or get you killed. And trust me, some of them will do these things. Parents certainly will.
We. Do. Not. Know. What. Autism. Looks. Like.
We. Only. Know. What. Autism. Plus. Trauma. Looks. Like.
"But what should we do when things are out of control?" Well, first, of course if things are actually likely to end in someone hurting another person badly without intervention, you may have to take extreme measures with the full understanding that those measures are likely to result in someone getting hurt badly. Though a lot of the time this is about onlooker anxiety and parental frustration, bot a real risk assessment. But it's still the wrong question. It assumes these situations arise spontaneously.
None of this happens in a vacuum. All children, when they are little, are capable of acting in ways that would be dangerous if thry had adult bodies. You love and guide them, and you get through it. And if they are neurodivergent, you recognise that they may need to be guided and supported in atypical ways, you figure out how, and you teach them safety. If they need to hit, give them a punching bag and teach them to use it. If they need to throw their bodies up against something, give them something safe to throw themselves against. If they need to lift and throw things, give them things to lift and throw and teach them to give others a heads up to get put of the way. What you don't do is drive the ways their minds and bodies naturally cope with the hell of being in a world designed to be excruciating underground until they explode with a ferocity and an ability to do real harm that can only be contained with an escalation of violence, and then pretend you are blameless for the consequences.
If you call first responders on someone, you are teaching them under what circumstances you will respond to them with violence. And you are teaching the first responders that they are the sort of people against whom the use of violence is necessary. So now, as the world pushes harder and harder against them, as they move closer to being unable to cope, they also have to be aware that there are those around them prepared to escalate to violence. And that makes it harder to cope. This isn't autistic children aging. This is a cycle of escalating violence autistic children at the mercy of neurotypical demands that they act on opposition to their biological programming are caught in.
When you spend half an hour brawling with your child to force him to see Elmo even though he doesn't want to go into that space, you are teaching him that it is dangerous to tell you what he needs. When you win, you are teaching him that it is hopeless. Whatever else you think you are teaching him, you are teaching him that if he wants to survive in a world with you in it, he had better keep his head down and absorb every awful thing the world has in store for him, or you will make it so much worse. Then when he learns that lesson and implements it like a pro, you will call the result "happiness."
When you go out in public and you tell the world that experts recommend using violence on disabled people for the crime of trying to survive in an inaccessible and hostile world, and you do not also address why that is a bad thing, you are telling disabled people not merely that you are not good spokespeople, but that you are actively trying to harm them.
This one isn't even on the parents. It's on the "professionals," the ones who convince parents that the only way to save their children from a horrible fate is to bully them until they fall apart, the ones who are so desperate to get their policies implemented that they will whip up anti-disability bigotry and violence to do so. It's on the people who will, in response to grassroots community advocacy to try to make the world a better place for autistic children, pull out the "But my child deserves to be abused" and "But think of the parents" cards. It's on the purveyors of the comforting fantasy that there are places for "those people" where they will be "safe and cared for" and engage in compassion theatre, where brutality is portrayed as love. The "disability experts" turn the parents into loaded weapons and leave them lying around, waiting to be triggered.
This is a traumatised disabled child who was assaulted by the police at his parents' instigation, because he is a traumatised disabled child living in a horrifically inaccessible world, and he can't cope. This is not a problem that started when the police showed up. It is a problem that started the first time someone had a chat with his parents about "developmental milestones."
And this child, this white, speaking child, "only" got his skull fractured. It could have been, and sometimes is, so much worse.
Things need to change. And people need to step up and change them. It is not the act of an ally to the disability rights movement to allow the statement that first responders get called on autistics to pass without a clear statement that this is a problem.

10 reasons Spinning is one of the best workouts ever
I live in Calgary. My bike remains in the shed, and it's visiting stay there up until this snow is gone. As well as though I've shared my viewpoints concerning disliking interior aerobics, biking courses are the one exemption I make when it concerns this.
Spinning is a preferred trademark name and though all Spinning courses are indoor cycling courses, not all interior cycling classes are Rotating classes ... are you with me? This winter season give your body the workout it should have by including these intense exercises to your routine. Below's my 10 reasons why:
1. They're more fun compared to most classes Okay, this is merely my viewpoint. I'm a dreadful professional dancer, so Zumba would certainly be a significant obstacle for me. Still, I've try out rather a few physical fitness classes, and also I have actually located that interior biking is always one of the most enjoyable, has the highest power degrees, and also the most passionate individuals. Don't hesitate to disagree in the remarks but it's one of the most difficult exercises you could get.
2. It has practical applications Being healthy from other health and fitness courses could definitely make your cardio health and fitness, stamina and also versatility a lot better, which all transfer over in a positive way to day-to-day living. Indoor cycling classes make you a much better bicyclist. If you like hitting the roadways and also paths in the nicer months of the year, interior alternatives could keep you trained.
3. They have lots of other eager exercisers You usually need to reach courses early to obtain a great place, or one at all. This is a good idea. It's motivating to know that you have to be on time or you'll miss out, and that wishes to remain in a course that's half empty? When the class has plenty of hardworking individuals, who all really wish to exist, it makes it a lot more fun.
4. Everyone has their own space In a congested fitness or yoga class, where people are dancing around or extending to high moon, you could face each other or have people's toes far too near to your face. Place pinheads into the mix, and also it's a recipe for a personal-space calamity. With indoor cycling, everybody has their own bike, and you never ever collapse right into your other exerciser. Things can obtain sweaty nevertheless so having a towel on hand is a great idea.
5. It burns a lot of calories The number of calories melted relies on your body weight, so allow's do some fast math. This is rough, yet if you take your weight in extra pounds, and also increase that by 0.4, that's the number of calories you burn each hr merely living. If you evaluate 150 extra pounds you'll burn 60 calories a hr on the couch. Profession that sofa for a stationary bicycle and also the numbers go means up.
Moderate effort implies you grow those 60 calories by 7, for a total amount of 420 calories burned each hour. Address a hard effort, and you could grow it by 10, for a complete shed of 600 calories per hour (bear in mind, this is a rugged calculation for a lady evaluating 150 pounds).
6. It can offer you a great looking butt and also legs When you're going hard, imitating hill training, it goes past aerobic training and makes the larger muscle fibers work, creating exceptional muscle mass tone. Though biking is waist-down workout you'll still intend to flatter your top body.
7. You train the mid-range power system Uh, what? I hear you say. Weightlifting trains for short-burst power, as well as steady-state cardiovascular training is cardiovascular exercise. In biking classes there are bunches of durations of 1 or 2 mins of huge initiative, which trains the mid-range (glycolysis) energy system or the sugar-burning variety. This is wonderful for getting quick outcomes. I find this sort of interval training likewise wonderful for downhill skiing.
8. You can make friends ' It is constantly the very same group of people coming to my courses,' states Chelanne Murphy, who instructs indoor biking classes at Globe Health and wellness Club in Calgary. 'Several of individuals have been in these courses for Ten Years and have established close relationships consequently." When something ends up being fun you're much likelier to stay with it, which's just what we're working towards.
9. The instructors are awesome Maybe not every one of them are amazing, yet I've located interior biking attracts a particular breed of trainer who treats every class like an efficiency and it becomes virtually like participatory theatre. They make it as fun as they possibly could and also it is among few courses I've been to where individuals are urge to hoot and also holler.
10. No person understands how difficult you're working Don' t be daunted if the classes you see are filled up with very healthy individuals. Everybody's obtained to start somewhere as well as the joy of biking is you function at your personal rate-- just you understand just what tension your bike's at. Take care that you don't maintain the stress so loosened that your legs whip around as well fast-- that can create injury-- but know that you get to make a decision just how much you crank the bike stress based on exactly what you feel you could endure. Nobody else will understand if you're dogging it or pressing to the wall.
If you're a newbie, look for much shorter or newbie courses to reduce your body into this vigorous exercise. Show up early and obtain help setting your bike up.
As I have actually noted previously, keep away from any kind of instructor that has you doing top body exercises or waistline spins while on the bike. Proper biking technique has to do with concentrating on pressing the pedals and also preserving great form.
Have you ever attempted Spinning? Allow us recognize why you like it or dislike it in the remark space below.

Before Himalayan Flood, India Ignored Warnings of Development Risks NEW DELHI â Long before the floods came, washing away hundreds of people and wiping out newly constructed dams and bridges, the warning signs were clear. The Himalayas have been warming at an alarming rate for years, melting ice long trapped in glaciers, soil and rocks, elevating the risk of devastating floods and landslides, scientists warned. Nearby populations were vulnerable, they said, and the regionâs ecosystem had become too fragile for large development projects. But the Indian government overrode the objections of experts and the protests of local residents to blast rocks and build hydroelectric power projects in volatile areas like the one in the northern state of Uttarakhand, where disaster struck. Officials said Monday that bodies of 26 victims had been recovered while the search proceeded for nearly 200 missing people. On Sunday a surge of water and debris went roaring down the steep mountain valleys of the Rishiganga river, erasing everything in its path. Most of the victims were workers on the power projects. Villagers said the authorities overseeing the expensive development projects had not prepared them for what was to come, giving a false sense of confidence that nothing was going to happen. âThere was no program or training in the village about disaster management by the government,â said Bhawan Singh Rana, head of the Raini village, hit by some of the worst damage. âOur village is on a rock, and we fear that it may slide anytime.â Security forces focused on one tunnel where they said 30 people were trapped. Food was airdropped to about 13 villages where the roads have been cut off, with roughly 2,500 people trapped. The devastation of the Uttarakhand floods has once again focused attention on the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas, where millions of people are feeling the impact of global warming. The World Bank has warned that climate change could sharply diminish living conditions for up to 800 million people in South Asia. But the effects are already felt, often in deadly ways, in large parts of the Himalayan belt from Bhutan to Afghanistan. The region has about 15,000 glaciers, which are retreating at a rate of 100 to 200 feet per decade. The melting feeds or creates thousands of glacial lakes that can suddenly break through the ice and rocky debris holding them back, causing catastrophic floods. In Nepal, Bhutan, India and Pakistan, a large number of glacial lakes have been deemed imminently dangerous by The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, an intergovernmental group. Nepal has been particularly vulnerable, with climate change forcing entire villages to migrate to lower lands for survival from a deepening water crisis. Deadly flash floods, some caused by glacial lakes bursting, have also become more frequent. Scientists have warned repeatedly that development projects in the region are a deadly gamble, potentially making matters worse. Dr. Ravi Chopra, the director of Peopleâs Science Institute in Uttarakhand, said a 2012 expert group appointed by the government had recommended that dams should not be built in the Alaknanda-Bhagirathi basin, including on the Rishiganga. He was part of a scientific committee appointed by Indiaâs highest court in 2014 that also advised against building dams in âthe para-glacial zone,â what he described as an area where the valley floor is more than about 7,000 feet above sea level. âBut the government has gone ahead and chosen to build them,â he said. Both of the hydroelectric projects hit by Sundayâs flood â one obliterated and the other badly damaged â were built in that zone, he said. D.P. Dobhal, a former scientist at the government-run Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology said, âWhen we develop such projects in the Himalayas such as hydro projects or roads and rail, in detailed project reports the glacier study data is never taken into consideration or included.â The government is building more than 500 miles of highway in Uttarkhand to improve access to several major Hindu temples, despite environmentalistsâ objections to the massive forest clearance required, which can hasten erosion and raise the risk of landslides. A committee appointed by Indiaâs Supreme Court and led by Dr. Chopra concluded last year that the government, in building the highway to the width of 10 meters, about 33 feet, had gone against the advice of its own experts at the Transport Ministry. The government had argued a wider road brought more economic dividends and was needed for potential deployment of large-scale military equipment to the disputed border with China. By the time the Supreme Court ruled that the road should be limited to 5.5 meters, or about 18 feet, hundreds of acres of forest and tens of thousands of trees had already been cut, a report in the Indian news outlet The Scroll said. âWhen you have your own ministry experts telling you the Himalayan region roads should not have a tarred surface of more than 5.5 meters, and then to go against your own expertsâ recommendations, then that is a serious matter,â Dr. Chopra said. âUnless the courts look into the issue of the sanctioning officials and the executing officials personally accountable, I donât think the situation will change.â Trivendra Singh Rawat, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, warned against seeing the flooding as âa reason to build anti-development narrative.â âI reiterate our governmentâs commitment to develop hills of Uttarakhand in a sustainable manner, and we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the achievement of this goal,â Mr. Rawat said on Twitter. Exactly what caused the latest flooding was not clear as of Monday night, with the Indian government saying a team of experts would visit the site to investigate. Ranjeet Rath, the head of Indiaâs geological survey, said initial information suggested a âglacial calving at highest altitude.â Calving is the breaking of ice chunks from a glacierâs edge. Scientists studying satellite imagery from before and after the flooding said it was likely not caused by a glacial lake bursting, as no such lake was visible in the images. They said the disaster most likely began with the collapse of a rock slope that had become unstable from thawing of ice in recent summers, and such a landslide could have broken up part of a glacier. An avalanche could have dammed the river temporarily, creating a lake which then broke free, said Umesh K. Haritashya, a scientist who studies glacial hazards at the University of Dayton in Ohio. Avalanches also generate heat from friction, which can melt ice that lies in its path or is in the tumbling debris. âBasically itâs a landslide that is some fraction rock, and some fraction ice,â said Dan Shugar, a geomorphologist at the University of Calgary in Alberta. âA lot of the ice melted. And it might have picked up a lot more.â The Raini village was in one of the areas hit hardest on Sunday, where the 13-megawatt Rishiganga hydro power project was completely washed away. Afterward, roughly 100 of the villageâs 150 residents spent the night in the open. âWe did not sleep in our houses out of fear that more water may come, rocks may shift, something more dangerous may happen,â said Mr. Rana, the village head. âWe took our bedding up in the forest, lit some fires, and somehow passed the night.â The area was the site of a well-known environmental protest against deforestation in the 1970s. Protesters, a large number of them women, would hug trees to stop loggers from cutting them, in a movement that became known as âchipko,â or embrace. Mr. Rana said local residents also held protests against construction of the Rishiganga power project, which began generating electricity last year, and they even filed court cases, but to no avail. They feared that the blasting of rocks would cause deadly landslides. âWe used to hear blasting and see the rocks shift,â he said. âWhen this project was under construction, half of our village slid. We requested to be shifted from here to another place. The government said they would do it, but it never happened.â Bhadra Sharma contributed reporting from Kathmandu, Nepal, and Henry Fountain from Albuquerque.
