Married At First Sight to show moment a gay groom quits

Married At First Sight Australia will feature the dramatic moment one of the show’s gay grooms quits the show’s new season at the last minute.

Season 11 of MAFS will start on Nine from January 29. The new season will feature gay grooms for the first time in years.

Married At First Australia finished filming last year, but at the time gossip swirled about production headaches behind the scenes.

Gay man Mike Felix (he’s pictured above) is one of the grooms picked for the new season. He’s not the one who leaves.

Last August, Mike’s husband-to-be Simon Flocco (he’s below) got cold feet at the last minute and quit the show, throwing producers for a loop.

As a result, it was unclear at the time if the new season would feature a same-sex couple at all after the runaway groom’s exit.

Production sources later spilled that Mike would walk down the aisle after all with a new groom, Perth-based hairdresser Stephen Stewart (he’s pictured below).

Mike and Stephen were spotted filming together and it’s understood the pair are intruders on the new MAFS season.

But in a new development, Nine has started promoting the season 11 cast, and Simon does appear among the grooms after all.

Yahoo! Lifestyle has explained that behind the scenes, producers debated whether to edit him out entirely.

“Shortly after filming his backstory and the grooms’ bucks party, he changed his mind about doing the show and quit,” an insider confirmed to the outlet.

However, the source claimed the decision was made to leave him in for a ~bit of drama~ at the start of the season.

The producers ultimately decided to include Simon as his exit was a “real moment” that shows “not everyone can handle the pressure of the experiment,” they said.

Simon’s official promo picture released by Nine (the one you can see above) appears shot on an iPhone. This is because he left the show before the cast’s official studio photoshoot.

“The picture of Simon is one he submitted to producers himself during pre-production to show them his suit,” the source told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

“Shortly after filming his backstory and the grooms’ bucks party, he changed his mind about doing the show and quit.”

MAFS Australia has a poor track record on same-sex weddings

In 2020, Married At First Sight Australia featured its first lesbian couple. Amanda Micallef, 34, and Tash Herz, 31, tied the knot.

Since premiering in 2015, MAFS has only featured one gay male couple, season three’s Craig and Andy.

The pair “married” on the show in 2016 at a ceremony in New Zealand. However, their relationship ended just a few days later.

In a scathing social media post, Craig later claimed the wedding was “torture” and left him with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Married At First Sight resident expert Mel Schilling has previously admitted the show’s poor track record on same-sex relationships.

“For us it was really important for us to find people who genuinely wanted to find love, and to really delve into the intricacies of their attraction and their types, what that means for them,” Mel told Metro in 2022.

“We’re not just saying ‘you’re gay, you’re gay’.”

Mel admitted “we got that horribly wrong in the early Australian series.”

“I think there’s great lessons to be learned from that,” she said.

I really thought the teaser about the ‘revelation’ that Mike was dating Jess. Whew. So glad that it wasn’t the case.

Quite interesting that both Mike and Jess who clashed with each other during season 6 (?) are both having huge epiphanies. Maybe Heidi was watching that and she might want to give them another go?

John: Well, Jess. You're getting really emotional watching that. Why was that so difficult for you?

Jess: Um...It's hard to watch Mick and Tamara hurt like that. It was also hard to watch Dan and my final vows. Thinking I was with somebody that loved me. Thinking that I was with somebody that actually wanted a life with me.

[John nods slowly]

Jess: I moved my entire life to the Gold Coast for this man. And, only to find out that it wasn't really what he wanted. I did love...Dan.

John: Did he break your heart?

[Jess considers this]

Jess: Um, I would say we both probably did hurt each --- one another...but yeah, I did.

[She tries to contain the tears that are flowing out.]

Jess: That is hard to watch. Because I don't think he really thought I was as serious as I was. He wasn't just the guy for me.

John: Mm.

Jess: Which is hurtful, because we hurt people to get that. You can't go through life just thinking that people will get over the things that you say and do that will hurt them. My empathy levels were so low.

[Mel nods.]

Jess: I was living in Jess' World.

[Mike's eyebrows shoot up. Seems he's surprised as we are that Jess is having this epic revelation. But he can't judge since he is in the same boat taking awhile before getting to his necessary epiphanies.]

Jess: Watching back on scene where I actually tell the group about my affair with Dan and I see Tamara is getting upset, and Mick was getting upset. And I've just sat there with a look on my face like I don't care at all. And, I have to say, it has taken two years to go: ....

[She utters an embarrased laugh]

Jess: ...I will never be that person again. Because I wasn't a very nice person. So I've taken a big look at myself, and this is why I came into this dinner party, and night. Wanting to put it behind me, and wanting to show that I have grown and matured from this experiment.

[John turns to Mel.]

John: I think it shows, doesn't it Mel?

[Mel nods]

Mel: Yeah.

MAFS Australia to feature first gay grooms in years

Married At First Sight Australia will feature a gay male couple for the first time in years in the reality show’s upcoming season.

Season 11 of the show will premiere on Nine from January 29.

The show hasn’t revealed its entire cast of brides and grooms just yet. But we know the new season will see the first pair of gay male grooms get a MAFS “wedding” since season three in 2016.

Yahoo! Lifestyle has confirmed groom Mike Felix is set to walk down the aisle.

Mike (pictured above) was raised in the US and currently lives in Melbourne where he recently finished working as a Tesla sales advisor for the past three years, the outlet reported.

The gay man hasn’t officially been named but has appeared in a Nine promo. It’s believed he’ll marry Perth-based hairdresser Stephen Stewart (pictured below) in season 11.

Married At First Australia completed filming last year. However, whether a pair of gay grooms would feature was up in the air for a while.

Last August, Mike’s first groom Simon reportedly dramatically quit the show, leaving producers scrambling to find a last-minute replacement.

Yahoo! says Mike and Stephen have been spotted filming but may debut on season 11 as intruders.

A Channel Nine spokesperson said in 2019, “We did go into casting for series six … with the hope of finding a gay couple.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t feel there was a good enough match and we didn’t want to include a gay couple just for the sake of appearances.”
