Episode 218: Megure's Sealed Secret (Part 2)
Megure’s wife was a delinquent in the past. She despised the police and insisted on being a decoy. That’s his sealed secret. Anyway, Sonoko has to go to the car to put something away, so she borrows Mouri’s keys, and due to a bad driver parking too close to the passenger side, she has to enter on the driver’s side. This turns out to be deadly because she is then followed by the psycho-battered-baseball-bat-bearing-platform-boot-bludgeoner, whose son was hit by a car and died because the woman was wearing the wrong kind of footwear for driving, so braking took longer. This causes him to chase Sonoko all over the department store in the dark, smashing things. Sato thinks that the smashing sound is from a fish tank in a pet store, but Megure knows better. He knows that it’s Go stones. He arrives just in time to be hit in the head, saving Sonoko, but reopening his old wound that he hides beneath his hat, from when his wife was a delinquent. The culprit, who was the security guard at the department store, cries glow-in-the-dark glue tears when he’s told that Sonoko is just a high schooler, and not a “platform boot-wearing demon.”
Best Quotes:
Culprit (the motive): “I just wanted that woman to apologize…..to wear proper shoes, and apologize to my son in heaven.”

Case Closed Volume 4 Manga Summary
Case Closed, also known as Detective Conan, is a popular manga series created by Gosho Aoyama. The series has been ongoing since 1994 and has been adapted into an anime, movies, and video games. The story revolves around a high school detective, Shinichi Kudo, who is transformed into a child after being poisoned by a criminal organization. He takes on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and continues to solve crimes while searching for a cure for his condition. Volume 4 of the series continues the thrilling and suspenseful cases of Conan Edogawa and his friends.
Chapter 28 - The Music Box's Owner Conan, Ran, and Kogoro take a trip to a rural village to attend a festival. While there, they visit a small museum and encounter a man who claims to have lost his memory. Later, they discover that the man was actually a suspect in a murder case and that the museum curator was trying to protect him. Conan, using his detective skills, solves the case and reveals the true identity of the murderer.
Chapter 29 - An Invitation from the Grave A wealthy man, Haruhiko Ichiyanagi, dies and leaves behind a mysterious invitation for his relatives to attend a meeting. During the meeting, the relatives are locked in a room with no way out and are given a series of challenges to solve in order to inherit Ichiyanagi's fortune. Conan, along with Kogoro and Ran, is invited to attend the meeting and uses his detective skills to uncover the true motive behind the challenges.
Chapter 30 - The Time Limit is 15:00 A bomb threat is made at a train station, and Conan and his friends must work quickly to find the bomb before it detonates. They follow a series of clues and encounter a group of bank robbers who are behind the threat. Conan and his friends manage to capture the criminals and prevent the bomb from exploding, saving many lives in the process.
Chapter 31 - Megure's Sealed Secret Conan and his friends attend a baseball game where the star player is poisoned on the field. Inspector Megure is also in attendance and reveals that he was present during a similar case 10 years prior. Conan investigates the case and discovers that the two cases are connected and that Megure had been keeping a secret about the previous case. With Conan's help, Megure comes clean and the true culprit is brought to justice.
Chapter 32 - A Mysterious Sniper Conan and his friends visit a mountain lodge where a famous sniper is rumored to be hiding out. They encounter a woman who claims to be the sniper's sister, but she is later revealed to be an imposter. The real sniper is revealed to be someone else entirely, and Conan must use his detective skills to solve the case and bring the culprit to justice.
Chapter 33 - The Shinkansen's Bomb Case A bomb is discovered on a bullet train, and Conan and his friends are called in to help solve the case. They encounter a group of terrorists who are planning to blow up the train in order to make a political statement. Conan and his friends work together to prevent the explosion and capture the terrorists, saving countless lives in the process.

Hey friend, not sure if you will remember but Google is not helping me right now. Do you remember one detective Conan episode that starts with inspector megure being stabbed/shot and hospitalized. And then there is a bomber basically saying they have placed bombs in many different areas that the police should hunt for. I specifically remember the bomber saying the metro trains should not stop or glow less than like 60 kmh or something? Does this sound familiar at all? 😭
As for Megure getting shot/hospitalized it's either Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target, or that two-part case in which the victims were women wearing platform boots and in which Midori, Megure's wife, was introduced. I think the title was Megure's Sealed Secret.
The one with the bomber I think is a different episode? Top of head it's Episode 304 Trembling Police Headquarters, but I might be wrong.....
Posting this ask in case anyone has a more accurate answer!

Maybe it’s foolish, but I am so desperately hoping that Crunchyroll adding remastered versions of the first 123 episodes of Detective Conan/Case Closed means that they’ll eventually host the entire show on the site. Or Discotek Media will sell English-subtitled Blu-ray or DVD sets, maybe like the German ones or FUNimation’s old seasonal releases, with 20-30-ish episodes per box.
Or something. Like literally any way I could get my hands on the hundreds of episodes that have never been officially subtitled in English and/or released for home video.
Because goodness gracious. I am struggling right now.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t regret importing over 150 Detective Conan DVDs from Japan. It’s kinda amazing to physically own more than 750 episodes of the same anime and have that on my shelf.
And I am constantly beyond impressed by the English softsub files that Conan fans have put together over the years. As someone who captions videos as part of her career, I am continually astounded by what fansubbers have accomplished. The beautifully timed and formatted karaoke for openings and endings, the fantastic English-text edits right in the caption file... it’s absolutely stunning. I wish I could subtitle like that!
[Image descriptions: Screenshots from Detective Conan episodes with English softsub files attached. The first screenshot, from the opening to Episode 168, has the song’s lyrics written in romaji for viewers to sing along to. The current part of the song is in a bigger, glowing white font, while parts of the song that have already passed are in light blue, and parts to come are in red. An English translation for the lyrics are at the bottom. In the second screenshot, from Episode 134, a chat room conversation originally written in Japanese is translated to and animated in English. End image descriptions.]
However, the gap between English-subtitled episodes on Crunchyroll right now—from Episodes 124 to 753—is huge. There are only so many English softsub files in existence, and many were created via OCR, Optical Character Recognition, using the officially(!) English-subtitled footage from United Television Broadcasting (UTB), which aired the series years ago in Southern California.
And I am very grateful to have any English subtitles at all for my Japanese DVDs! But OCR is far from a perfect process, and I dread when my only English subtitle option for an episode is an OCR’d UTB file. While episodes such as those contained in “The Desperate Revival” have been quality checked and edited, going from something like this...
[Image description: A screenshot from Episode 189 of Detective Conan, with an OCR’d English subtitle file attached. Heiji sits on Conan’s hospital bed, holding a bouquet of flowers, and Conan speaks to him. His dialogue is written as, “I’m askin ou a ain...” End image description.]
To this...
[Image description: The same screenshot from Episode 189 as above, though a different English subtitle file is attached. This one reads, “I’m asking you again...” End image description.]
The majority of these files have not been vetted. I’ve watched dozens of cases using .srts riddled with errors.
And I do want to stress: the translations are still largely understandable. I am glad to have them. Sometimes, they can even elevate otherwise dull fillers because I have a horrible sense of humor and find some of the mess-ups hilarious. No joke, I have genuinely fallen to the floor and cried with laughter at a few of the more outlandish goofs in the subtitles.
Okay, maybe that was more tiredness than anything. But still. For unimportant episodes, I generally don’t really mind if the English translation is a bit wonky, even if comprehension is occasionally severely impacted, like below:
[Image descriptions: Screenshots from Episode 283 of Detective Conan, with an English OCR’d subtitle file attached. In the first screenshot, Inspector Yokomizo says, “Ayaka! Please tell us the truth.” In the second screenshot, Ayaka’s response is written as, “LO LL Le aru, vin, ov dainiuiiiila 5 tiauguniet.” End image description.]
I totally understand, Ayaka.
But that said, it is painful to use such unreliable translations in crucial, plot-related episodes, and it’s especially painful when I do have stronger captions available... but they’re for remastered versions of the cases, which often cut or add scenes, and are thus usually totally incompatible with my DVD footage without enormous amounts of editing.
And I did edit remastered captions to better fit my DVD once before, with Episodes 217-218, “Megure’s Sealed Secret.” But even though the remaster was near identical in terms of content to the original, it did cut out the tiniest little things, like characters repeating what another character had said, and as a result, the timing was just slightly off all over the place. The editing I had to do was so intense that I basically spoiled the entire story for myself just messing with the captions in Subtitle Edit. I decided then that such drastic editing wasn’t something I wanted to do anymore, at least not before watching an episode.
Now, the next case up for me is “Contact with the Black Organization,” Episodes 309-311, and it’s the same scenario: the remastered subtitles don’t work at all with my old DVD footage, and so I’m left with the OCR’d UTB .srt. And it kills me because, as shown above, sometimes you can’t tell at all what’s supposed to be said!
So, like, tl;dr, I love having the show on DVD, and I’m so thankful for and impressed by the folks who put English softsub files out there, even the OCR’d UTB ones! But it’s undeniable that accessing this series in English hasn’t been the easiest, and even with what I already own, I would buy any official English releases for the missing episodes in a heartbeat. Translations already exist into the early 400s! I’m absolutely dying for them to be put on DVD or Blu-ray or Crunchyroll or wherever! And I so hope that Crunchyroll adding more Case Closed, and Discotek Media announcing more Blu-rays, means that they will.
Please I am struggling.
[Image description: A screenshot from Episode 288 of Detective Conan, with an OCR’d English subtitle file attached. Ran and Shinichi, holding umbrellas, look up. Shinichi speaks, and his dialogue is written as, “See, it’s caught on the railing O 10Sses airs a wie ng.” End image description.]
#shut up goop#i should really stop getting surprised that i write entire essays when i don't intend to because everything i say ends up an essay :P#anyway i hope i didn't say too much and step on any toes but agasfsafawfa the struggle is real#utb's subs are also exclusively for the tv version of course which means they don't match up with my dvd#and usually in those cases i just edit a bit after the intro and it's fine#but lately it's also been off like. in the middle of an episode after the door. or after the ending credits before the epilogue.#and it's not *super* off or anything but enough to be noticeable#and so i'm like trying not to spoil the episodes for myself skipping around in subtitle edit with my hand over the screen lol#i'm so ridiculous but i wanna use my dvds darn it ugh the struggle is real#i won't hope for an english dub because that's a *lot* but just subtitles would be good! a lot already exist!#i'm really really really hoping the crunchyroll update means something sob#but if not those remastered episodes are really nice....#anyway#detective conan#detco dvd saga#maybe#ramblings

Episode 217: Megure's Sealed Secret (Part 1)
There’s a serial killer attacking girls with Ganguro style – that is to say, they have artificially tanned skin and blonde hair, or as Mouri puts it, "they look like they came from a jungle." Sonoko says it’s really popular. All the girls were attacked while they were coming out of their car, and all of them were wearing jewelry from the department store where Ran and Sonoko were buying sweaters. Ran gets lost in the parking garage and ends up finding the fourth victim. In addition to the fact that she’s dead, there's something weird about the body, according to Ran and Sonoko. Megure is having issues because he keeps having PTSD flashbacks to some other case in the past, when his decoy was killed.
