Monsoons and the Meghalayan Knup: A Story of Resilience.

The ‘knup’ (pronounced ka-noop), a Khasi rain shield that is an essential part of the daily lives of the locals of Meghalaya, especially during monsoons. ‘Knup’ has been around for many decades and has survived because of its utilitarian purposes. The tool features in many traditional khasi agricultural folksongs as well as tales and legends.

Imagine stepping out into the paddy fields, the knup resting comfortably on your head. It's like an inverted teardrop, covering you from head to ankle. Your hands are free to sow seeds or harvest crops, unburdened by the need to hold an umbrella. The design is so clever that the water channels down and away from you, thanks to the underlying bamboo weave.

While traditional materials like palm leaves and bamboo have their charm, modern versions of the knup incorporate plastic sheets and even tarpaulin. Broom grass is another fascinating material; it's soaked, flattened, and dried to make it stronger and more resilient against the torrential downpours.

In a nutshell, the knup is more than just a tool; it's a cultural treasure, a testament to the Khasi people's deep understanding of their environment. It's practicality and poetry, woven together in palm leaves and bamboo, telling a story of a community's harmonious coexistence with nature.
