Mum is not young anymore so I told her not to prepare more than necessary if only the two of us are eating. Dishes like this Fried Noodles is good enough for me. She used mee pok (面薄) or flat yellow noodles for tonight’s dinner with tiger prawns and added stall bought roasted chicken.

20 Sarawak Dishes You Need To Try Before You Die
Who says Penang is the only place to have good food? ;)
By Samantha Khor
1. Sarawak laksa
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @karmenwong92
One of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's Top 10 dishes, Sarawak laksa consists of a vermicelli rice noodles (bihun) cooked in shrimp-based broth made from sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemongrass and thickened with coconut milk. The dish is served with a general amount of bean sprouts (taugeh), prawns, omelette strips, and shredded chicken.
2. Kolo mee or mee kolok
Tumblr media
Image via Jonathan Lin / Flickr
A simple noodle dish that is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, kolo mee consists of yellow egg noodles tossed in a light sauce before it is served with slices of barbecued pork (char siew), chicken cutlets, or minced meat. Non-halal versions might also contain lard. The dish usually comes in two flavours - plain or seasoned with red sauce. You could also request for it to be seasoned with soy sauce or - in certain places - black vinegar.
3. Midin, a crispy wild jungle fern which can be served as kerabu or stir-fried
Tumblr media
Image via Arthur Wee / suituapui on Wordpress
Midin is typically stir-fried with garlic and/or belacan with chilli. Anchovies and salted fish may also be added into the dish, which can be found in most coffee shops that sell nasi campur.
4. Kueh chap
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @karmenwong92
Kueh chap are wide, flat rice noodles cooked in a herby broth consisting of pork meat, skin, internal organs as well as deep-fried tau pok and hard-boiled egg quarters/halves.
5. Ayam pansuh or manok pansoh
Tumblr media
Image via Berita Harian / Bernama
Manok pansoh, an Iban dish, is unique in the sense that its ingredients are cooked in a bamboo. Cut chicken pieces, lemongrass, and tapioca leaves are stuffed into bamboo before it is cooked over an open fire. This cooking method seals in the flavour, which results in juicy and tender chicken with gravy perfumed by lemongrass and bamboo.
6. Manok kacangma
Tumblr media
Image via Herbs & Spices (herbdonald) on Wordpress
Manok kacangma is a Chinese dish consisting of chicken cooked with a kacangma-based broth. The herb, which also known as motherwort, is believed to be able to ease the effects of menstruation in women. Rice wine may also be added for a more delicate taste.
7. Tomato koay teow
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @ging_ern
Rice noodles a.k.a. koay teow is served in a tomato sauce-based gravy with vegetables, chicken, and seafood. It is also available with crispy noodles and bihun.
8. Terung dayak, a round yellow fruit, is typically used in sour dishes such as assam sour fish and miscellaneous sour soups
Tumblr media
Image via Arthur Wee / suituapui on Wordpress
9. Dabai, a seasonal fruit with black skin and yellow flesh
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @dlimkp
Dabai is a hard fruit, but soak it in warm salt water for 10 to 15 minutes and you'll get a soft, date-like snack. Fun fact - the seed can be eaten too!
10. Belacan bihun
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @luyen92
Belacan bihun consists of rice vermicelli served in a sweet shrimp-based (belacan) broth topped with julienned cucumber, cuttlefish slices, and century egg quarters/halves. You can also have it with a spritz of lime and chilli sauce.
11. Fried oyster pancake or 'or chien'
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @karmenwong92
Made to be shared, fried oyster pancake is a thin, crispy pancake with oysters concentrated in the centre. It is usually eaten with light soy sauce mixed with pepper.
12. Kompia
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @pierre.eats
A Foochow delicacy, kompia refers to a bun - either soft or crispy - baked in a round stone oven and typically stuffed with meat cooked in a special gravy.
13. Sarawak layer cake or kek lapis Sarawak
Tumblr media
Image via The Kitchen Guardian on Blogspot
Layer cakes may be commonplace for most of us, but Sarawak layer cake's multi-coloured, multi-flavoured variety deserves a category of its own!
14. Mee sapi
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @senmirei
Although the dish typically uses noodles similar to kolok mee, mee sapi is different in the sense that it is served with a beef-based broth. Topped with generous amounts of beansprouts and beef slices, you can opt to have the broth added straight to your noodles or in a separate bowl.
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @karmenwong92
15. Sio bee, Kuching's version of siu mai
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @itell
The difference between siu mai and sio bee is that siu mai contains pork and shrimps while sio bee is 100% stuffed with pork.
16. Umai
Tumblr media
Image via JKKN Sarawak Facebook
A Melanau delicacy, umai is made with thin slivers of fresh fish (usually iced instead of frozen) combined with thinly-sliced onions, chilli, salt, and juice from calamansi lime or assam fruit. It is usually served with roasted sago pearls - sago starch mixed with coconut milk, which are then rolled into balls and cooked - instead of rice. The dish is sometimes prepared with cooked prawns.
17. Mani (money) chai bihun or *bihun cangkuk manis*
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @karmenwong92
Mani chai bihun, of Hakka origin, consists of bihun stir-fried with eggs, prawns, chicken pieces, and the sweet mani chai herb.
18. Kampua mee
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @rachrich85
Although it looks similar to kolo mee, kampua mee is actually meant to be drier than kolo mee. Typically served with slices of barbecued pork and a bowl of soup, the noodles can either be served plain or tossed in soy sauce or chilli sauce.
19. Bubur pedas
Tumblr media
Image via Instagram @hascelly
A traditional Malay dish originating from Indonesia, bubur pedas is a popular dish during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. The dish consists of porridge cooked in spices such as turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, chillies, ginger, coconut and shallots, topped with fried anchovies, fried onions, and peanuts.
20. Nasik aruk
Tumblr media
Image via HuntersFood.com
Though it is classified as fried rice, this traditional Sarawakian Malay dish is not fried with oil. The ingredients consist of garlic, onion, and anchovies fried with cooked rice. The rice is fried until it achieves a smokey or slightly-burned taste.

大家好! Palestinians in Gaza who're able to get their hands on food distributed by aid agencies survive mainly on canned food and flat bread. So I opened a carton of sweet corn kernels for my simple breakfast on Wednesday, which was a public holiday, out of compassion for them. Whilst I was eating, I came across the following video which gives us some insight into why the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza is so arduous. The second highlights Israeli settlers trying to make a land grab in West Bank whilst the war in Gaza is going on. The third provides proof that weapons supplied by the US were used in the destruction of Khan Younis; schools, shops and residences have all been reduced to rubble.

Since Wednesday was a public holiday, Pa and I had lunch together. We went to a Hainanese cafe which, besides selling local coffee, tea and breakfast foods, also serves Hainanese pork chops with rice, Hainanese chicken curry, as well as laksa and another local favourite, mee siam. Mee siam is a bee hoon (rice vermicelli) dish with hardboiled egg, mini taupok (bean puff) cubes and bean sprouts in a tangy sweet broth. Mine is a somewhat zhnged (elevated) version with prawns, omelette strips, mini tau pok cubes, bean sprouts and a sprinkle of fried shallots. This bowl was also less sweet than the ones found at local food stalls and cafes; it was so delicious that I wiped the bowl clean!
Tumblr media
I revisited the stall owned by the middle-aged couple from China. There's a perpetual line of customers waiting to place their orders so they are doing very well! I wasn't surprised since the dishes I've tried so far have been excellent value for money. I chose ji pa la mian (chicken cutlet handpulled noodles). It's usually served dry, but I asked if they would make it soupy and they obliged. $6.50 got me a large bowl of la mian, blanched crunchy bak choy and crispy chicken. Mmm yum, this was GOOD! The chicken was well marinated, the la mian QQ and slurpable and the light broth wasn't too salty. Definitely will return to try their other noodles!

What an eventful week this has been! It began with the ICC prosecutor seeking arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas parties believed to have committed crimes of humanity or war crimes. Then, Norway, Ireland and Spain recognised Palestine as a state. Now, the ICJ has ordered Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah. The dark cloud hanging over Gaza is starting to shimmer with more silver linings. Palestinians have been suffering for over 7 months now. Over 35,000 have tragically perished, over 77,000 wounded, much of their critical infrastructure including homes, hospitals and schools are destroyed and mass starvation is occurring in the war-torn strip. May this be the beginning of the end to this genocidal war.

This weekend I'm in for a treat. It's Saturday in this region; Grace is cooking huang jiu ji mian (yellow wine chicken noodles) for lunch. I'm so excited! This delicious dish isn't something one easily finds at dining establishments. The one that I knew served it has closed down and even then, their version isn't as fragrant. Grace and Douglas use plenty of old ginger, garlic and a more expensive brand of wine, so theirs is more delicious. This pretty much wraps up a great week. May there be more of them! 下次见!

Stall name: Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee
Address: Hong Lim hawker centre #02-59
Item: Curry Chicken Mee
Price; $6
Review: One of the famous stalls at Hong Lim hawker centre. In fact, they have another stall next to this one, separated by a walkway. Not sure if there is any difference between the two stalls, but there was a slight queue at this #02-59 stall and no queue at the other one when we visited.
I liked the curry soup, it was tasty and had the right thickness and viscosity. The chicken was nice and tender but there were only four pieces of meat. Lots of Tau Pok, maybe three slices of fish cake and one small potato. The portion of noodles is also very little.
Overall, I think it tastes good but it’s expensive. Not something I would eat often or queue up for.
Taste: 8/10
Value for money: 6/10
Overall: 7/10

#2649: Myojo Mee Pok Dry Instant Noodles - Singapore
Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, fishball, char siew pork, tau pok, fishcake and coriander. The noodles are wide and flat - very nice texture to them. The flavor was a kind of sweet and salty with just a lick of spiciness thrown in. Would love to head over to Singapore and try this in a hawker court! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8888107000060.

Mum preferred her noodles so I got the takeaway (S$5 + S$0.30 container) Minced Meat Noodle (肉脞面) from 85 Redhill Teochew Fishball Noodles at Sun Plaza. Hers is mee pok (面薄), characterized by its flat and yellow appearance and not the usual mee kia (幼面) or thin yellow noodles. The dry style noodles came with meat balls, fish dumpling, braised mushrooms, sliced and minced pork garnished with a whole lot of spring onions.
Tumblr media
A few stalls away, I ordered my burgers from Ordinary Burgers. For the first one, I took up the Classic Beef Burger Meal (S$10.60) which adds French fries and a can of drink for S$3 extra. A freshly grilled smashed beef patty, made with 100% premium farm raised Australian beef and topped with Australian sauce. No idea what they meant by Australian sauce but it tasted like ketchup and mayonnaise with a dash of chilli powder in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Spicy Chicken Burger (S$6) came with a crispy flour battered chicken, flash fried golden and marinated in a blend of hot sauce with a dash of purple mayo and fresh lettuce. While the patty is juicy and lightly spicy, the exterior looks over-fried. The purple mayonnaise seems more like a gimmick and tasted just like the plain white version.

It's ok you can say white people ketchup. We know and we agree.
its like ik theres multiple forms of what can be considered asian ketchup but rn im thinking about how theres chinese singaporean dry noodle dishes that are made w like asian ketchup and other sauces and its so good and like if u suggested the idea of ketchup and noodles it would sound gross to most people but its actually such a good ingredient for dry noodles

大家好! In order to recover more quickly from a bad bout of the flu, I treated myself to a highly nutritious (also very yummy) meal last weekend. I first ate tomato scrambled eggs during a trip to Guang Zhou years ago and never forgot how delicious it was; as Chinese expats flock to my country, this dish can now be found anytime I crave it. I ordered it, and big prawn wat dan hor fun (flat and broad rice noodles in silky egg gravy). Eggs were the answer to every ailment when our country was poor decades ago and I still rely on them for extra nourishment.

More noodles were on the cards when I took Pa out for lunch the next day. He ordered yow gai meen (soya sauce chicken dry noodles); I chose shrimp wonton tong meen (soup noodles) and har gow (prawn dumplings). The noodles were so perfectly QQ here that they won Pa's and my hearts; at once springy and satiny smooth for both dry and soup versions, they were totally slurp-worthy to the point where I could easily eat double what I was served. Also, I visited a stall that specialises in salt-baked chicken and paired it with mee pok (flat egg noodles) soup. The tender and juicy meat didn't need much chewing; it was so good!

The fragrance of prawn noodle soup lured me away from the fishball noodle stall. Sweet fresh prawns, crunchy beansprouts, QQ mee pok (yes there're other noodles but mee pok is by far my favourite) and a full-bodied broth are hard to beat. I also enjoyed mee siam, a savoury and tangy vermicelli breakfast dish with egg, tau pok (bean puff) and fish cake. Besides mee siam, the stall I visited sells lontong: rice cakes topped with vegetables, egg and fish cakes, doused in fragrant curry gravy and drizzled with sambal. I tried it for breakfast the next day and it was both rich and flavourful.

This week has been a noodle-heavy one and I couldn't be happier! At the same time, those of us who enjoy peace, nutritious meals and good sleep are incredibly blessed. Those ravaged by war, with electricity, water and food cut off, are denied those basic human rights that we take for granted. As I tuck into silken strands as well as delightful broths and gravies, people who're suffering immensely are on my mind. All I can do is pray that compassion and rationality will eventually prevail, and soon!
Tumblr media
During times of peace, everyone enjoyed higher standards of living. Food, water, electricity and shelter were plentiful and costs were low. Now, it feels like we're back in the 1980s as far as real incomes are concerned; travel is a luxury that we'll be doing less of, or perhaps we won't travel as far. Also, why pay premium to visit countries that may be unfriendly to us? 下次见!
