Urgent Appeal to Support My Family in Gaza: Critical Need as Winter Approaches
Donation link (GFM)
Dear Friends, Supporters, and Kind-hearted People,
As the cold winter months approach, I am reaching out with an urgent appeal to help my family in Gaza. The challenges they face are immense, with limited access to basic necessities like food, water, medical supplies, and warmth. Their situation has only grown more difficult as the cold approaches, putting them at even greater risk.
Why Your Support Matters
Life in Gaza is challenging at the best of times, but winter brings an entirely new level of hardship. With frequent power outages and a shortage of fuel, heating becomes nearly impossible, leaving families exposed to the harsh cold. Many homes, including my family’s, lack insulation and proper heating, putting children, the elderly, and the sick at serious risk.
Your support can make an immediate and direct difference. Donations will be used for:
• Warm clothing and blankets to protect against the cold.
• Basic food supplies to sustain them through the harsh winter.
• Medical essentials to care for the sick, especially with scarce resources.
• Heating materials and fuel, when available, to make their living space safer and more comfortable.
How You Can Help
Any amount, big or small, will make a significant difference in helping my family endure the winter with dignity and hope. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
1. Direct donations: 🙏
2. Spreading the word: Share this appeal with your networks to help us reach more people.
3. Raising awareness: By increasing awareness about the ongoing crisis in Gaza, we can help generate long-term support for families like mine
A Message of Gratitude
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your time and consideration. Your kindness and compassion are a beacon of hope in these difficult times. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
With heartfelt thanks,
Momin Alostaz

I am Hamad, 27 years old, a Palestinian from Gaza. I currently reside in Gaza.Right now I have 5 members of my family, including me. My father was martyred in the war(24.01.2024). I want to go out with my wife, daughter, mother and sister.I am starting a fundraiser to save the lives of my immediate family members, I am their only hope to get out of Gaza to Egypt. Please help me save my family's lives. I am unable to work due to war, there is no work here, and whenever I have a chance to sleep, I wake up right away to see if my family is still alive, it is hard to live here due to the current situation where there is no electricity, connection, fuel, water or food, which makes our health condition worse, I am worried that I will lose my family any moment. Due to the war that's been going on in Gaza Strip for 202 days, which has targeted civilians, they're struggling right now, and genocides are happening in Gaza every day. At the beginning of the war, me and my family evacuated from the north to the south where they looked for a safe place, and we're homeless now. Currently, there is no safe place for us to live or to go, as of now we are sharing the tiny space with a large number of people. On top of that, after a hard 110 days during this war, I'm worried about my daughter not getting food or sleep because they don't have the basic necessities of life. Hearing bombs and explosions scare us, so we flee from place to place looking for safety. We can't find any medication and we keep getting sick and we don't have access to health care. Many of my family members have been killed, and many other members are missing under rubble, we don't know if they are alive or dead. Please help me collect the application fees and travel costs for five people.To facilitate me and my family's evacuation from Gaza and to Germany I'm setting up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $27,000. Here is the breakdown of the funds: • It is estimated that $3000 will be sufficient to cover the basic needs of my family including their accommodation, food, and other essentials. Has to be allocated to cover the expenses associated with obtaining permits to leave Gaza, as well as crossing fees at Rafah, at the Egypt-Gaza border. This amount breaks down to $6000 per person (4 people).3000$ for children under 18 years (1people) Any donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference to the safety of me and my family. We'll use the money raised in a transparent and efficient way to make sure every dollar goes to keeping them safe. Thanks for your support, and I'm grateful for any help you can give during this difficult time. Help me reach my goal and provide safety for me and my family by sharing this campaign with your friends, family, and colleagues I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your kindness and support, as well as your willingness to stand with us in support, as together we can make a real difference and provide safety and security for my family.
Guys please help this family. They've only received a single donation so far

I am Awad, 40 years old, a Palestinian from Gaza. I currently reside in Gaza.
Right now I have 5 members of my family, including 3 children.
I am starting a fundraiser to save the lives of my immediate family members, I am their only hope to get out of Gaza to Egypt and then to Germany in order to be safe again.
Due to the war that's been going on in Gaza Strip for 200 days, which has targeted civilians, they're struggling right now, and genocides are happening in Gaza every day.
At the beginning of the war, me and my family evacuated from the north to the south where they looked for a safe place, then we found out our house had been bombed, and our neighborhood area had been destroyed. The house we lived in for more than 23 years is gone, and we're homeless now.
Currently, there is no safe place for us to live or to go, as of now we are sharing the tiny space with a large number of people. On top of that, after a hard 110 days during this war, I'm worried about my children not getting food or sleep because they don't have the basic necessities of life.

Please help me collect the application fees and travel costs for five people.
To facilitate me and my family's evacuation from Gaza and to Germany I'm setting up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $25,000. Here is the breakdown of the funds:
• It is estimated that $3000 will be sufficient to cover the basic needs of my family including their accommodation, food, and other essentials.
Has to be allocated to cover the expenses associated with obtaining permits to leave Gaza, as well as crossing fees at Rafah, at the Egypt-Gaza border. This amount breaks down to $6000 per person (3 people).3000$ for children under 18 years (2people).
• The cost of travel from Gaza to Germany $3000
. The cost for visa applications and all the costs related to reunion is $700 per person.
Any donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference to the safety of me and my family.

THURSDAY HERO: Faye Schulman
Faye Schulman was a young Jewish photographer in Poland who became a resistance fighter after her family was slaughtered by the Germans. For the next two years, she took pictures of what she witnessed, leaving an extensive photographic record for posterity.
Born Faigel Lazebnik in 1919, she was one of seven children in an Orthodox Jewish family in Lenin, a small village in Poland. Known as Faye, she learned four languages: Yiddish at home, Polish at school, Hebrew in religious school, and Russian among the non-Jewish townspeople. Her brother Moshe was a professional photographer and she worked as his assistant, developing a keen eye and a talent for photography. When Moshe moved to another town, Faigel took over his business.
After the Germans invaded Lenin in 1941, they forced the town’s Jews into a squalid ghetto. On August 14, 1942, the Nazis “liquidated” the Lenin ghetto by brutally murdering 1,850 Jews, including Faye’s parents, sisters, and brother. Only 26 Jews were spared because the Nazis could make use of their skills. Faye was ordered to develop photographs of the massacre that claimed the lives of her family as well as almost everyone she knew. She secretly made extra copies of the pictures and kept them to bear testimony to Nazi crimes against humanity.
Soon after, Faye escaped from the Nazis and joined the Molotava Brigade, a group of Russian resistance fighters in the forest of Belarus. She said, “This was the only way I could fight back and avenge my family.” They were known as “partisans” – an insurgent militia group opposing an occupation army. Despite rampant antisemitism in the group, she was allowed to join because she had some basic medical skills learned from her late brother-in-law, who had been a doctor in Lenin. Faye became the group’s nurse, serving alongside the resident doctor, a veterinarian. For almost two years, Faye dressed fighters’ wounds and did whatever she could for sick and injured fighters, despite a lack of medical equipment. She participated in armed raids, later remembering “When it was time to be hugging a boyfriend, I was hugging a rifle. Now I said to myself, my life is changed. I learned how to look after the wounded, I even learned how to make operations.”
Faye’s partisan brigade raided her hometown of Lenin, during which the resistance fighters acquired food, weapons and supplies. As they passed her childhood home, Faye urged her fellow partisans to burn it to the ground, which they did. “I won’t be living here. The family’s killed. To leave it for the enemy? I said right away: Burn it!”
Faye found her old photographic equipment, and brought it back to their forest encampment. For the next two years, Faye documented the dangerous existence of anti-Nazi partisans. It was vitally important to her because as she later said, “I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof.”
Faye’s resistance group was liberated by the Soviets in July 1944. After the war ended, she was overjoyed to find that her brother Moshe had also survived and had been part of another resistance group. Faye and Moshe were the only survivors of their family of nine. Soon after Faye married Morris Schulman, who’d fought alongside Moshe. They decided to make a new life in Palestine, then occupied by the British, who made it difficult if not impossible for war-scarred Holocaust survivors to enter the land. For two years the Schulmans were stuck in a displaced persons camp in Germany, waiting for the opportunity to immigrate. They helped smuggle arms into Palestine to support the Jews fighting for independence. In 1947 Faye became pregnant, and they needed someplace safe to live. They were able to get visas to Canada, and settled in Toronto, where they ran a family business and raised two children. In 1995, Faye published a book about her experience as an anti-Nazi resistance fighter: “A Partisan’s Memoir: Woman of the Holocaust.”
Faye died on April 24, 2021, surrounded by her family, at age 101. Sadly, the last few years of her life saw an upsurge of antisemitism worldwide. Faye left an inspiring message for young people today: “To Jewish kids I would like to say – be proud to be Jewish. To non-Jewish kids I would like to say – if there is a war and you have to fight, fight for freedom and don’t be ashamed to be in the army.”
For saving lives, battling Nazis, and leaving a photographic record so the horrors of the Holocaust would not be forgotten, we honor Faye Lazebnik Schulman as this week’s Thursday Hero.

Germany WTF?
By Genevieve Gluck September 23, 2023
A woman in Germany has been warned by a court after comparing a transgender organization’s recently-adopted mascot and a symbol known to be used by pedophiles. Rona Duwe, a women’s rights campaigner, has received an order from the Higher Regional Court in Cologne barring her from further comparisons.
The initial complaint, lodged against Duwe in March, referred to a series of comments she had made online criticizing the distinct pink and blue butterfly being utilized as a mascot by a board member of the German Society for Transidentity and Intersexuality (DGTI – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Transidentität und Intersexualität).
The butterfly, which has been named Fiely, is a mascot of the northern German trans self-help group Fielappers – a low-German word translating to “butterflies.” Trans-identified male DGTI board member Julia Steenken has appeared holding the butterfly in public situations, and, according to Duwe, the mascot has been present in photos taken at several court proceedings, at meetings of the national parliament or Bundestag, in medical clinics, at events with families, and with the police.
The butterfly mascot was designed by Andrea Fleßner, a trans-identified male involved in the founding of Fielappers. Fleßner also has a close working relationship with DGTI.
Fiely is often seen posed amongst other childlike-toys on its dedicated Facebook page.
The butterfly symbol utilized by Fielappers [L], and a list of pedophilic symbols identified by the FBI [R].

The city of Berlin has prompted outrage from locals after offering a graphic picture book on prostitution to children via its official website. The book, titled Rosie Needs Money (Rosi sucht Geld), is advertised as a resource for youth aged 6 to 12 years old.
According to Equal Opportunities Officer Kerstin Drobick, the book is a “helpful tool” for explaining prostitution to children of families residing in a red-light district of Berlin, located in Kurfürstenkiez, known as Kurfürstenstraße.
“In the years in which the Tiergarten Süd and Schöneberger Norden neighborhood management offices dealt with the issue of street prostitution and also had many conversations with residents, this was one of the topics: What do I say to the child? The Tiergarten Süd district management has faced this courageously,” Dobrick says in her defense of the book.
“An order was placed for a children’s book that tried to explain to the children what was happening there. Interestingly, extensive research has shown that educational books for children aged 10 and over avoid this explanation.”
Drobick also explains that the book on prostitution, which features graphic illustrations, was created “with primary school children and other people [in mind].”

Hello! I don't know who i should connect to about this.
You may be familiar with the general situation of trans and generally queer people in russia. Since the start of war in Ukraine, the law, that was in force for about 10 years and banned "LGBT propaganda" for minors (in fact, it banned any information to teenagers and any materials that are in any way related to queer people and potentially accessible to minors) was changed to a complete ban on “LGBT propaganda”.
In October of this year, russia completely banned documentary and medical transition for transgender people and significantly restricted their other rights. More specifically here: https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/07/25/vladimir-putin-trans-healthcare-ban-russia/ On November 30, the russian Supreme Court classified the “international LGBT movement” as an “extremist organization.” What this means exactly is explained in detail here: https://meduza.io/en/cards/russia-has-banned-the-so-called-international-lgbt-movement
The activist team “Quarteera” has started a petition calling for easier access to refugee status for trans* people from Russia in Germany (e.g. the possibility of applying for refugee status for people already in Germany without having to travel to russia to submit documents).
🟣 The petition can be read and signed here until December 18th: https://epetitionen.bundestag.de/content/petitionen/_2023/_08/_22/Petition_156274.html
Residents of other countries can sign too. I would be very grateful if you would sign the petition and help spread the word.
The petition is in German, but anyone can sign!
According to Wikipedia, the group behind the petition is involved in numerous educational activities and demonstrations that aim to help LGBT+ Russian migrants and their families in Germany.
"Quarteera is a Russian-speaking non-profit volunteer LGBT registered association in Berlin, Germany. The association was officially registered in April 2011 and calls itself the "Russian-speaking group of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people and their friends in Germany"."

Chapter 2: Baptism
Outside the embassy, Leon hailed for a cab to get to the bar. The journey there was in complete awkward silence, except for the occasional question raised by the cab driver, who quizzed you on why you were headed to such an unsavory place. Somehow he could tell that Leon didn’t quite belong and cautioned about certain areas being unsafe for tourists. Leon just snorted in response, while you laughed inwardly at the irony of his cover story, where he was meant to be your American tourist friend embarking on a Eurotrip.
To be honest, it really wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be. Berlin was a smaller city and felt safer than New York. However, you still carried around that Swiss Army knife Leon had won and given to you back in the day wherever you went, just in case. You ran the tip of your finger along its metallic surface in your pocket. The world could be cruel to little girls after all.
As you exited from the cab, you were greeted by a lively, eclectic neighborhood, sprinkled with night markets, kebab and shisha shops, independent art spaces and late night bars. The buildings were noticeably more rundown than Mitte, the district you had traveled from, and the community a lot edgier. With both of you now dressed casually, you had no problem blending into the midnight crowd.
You swung open the doors of an unmarked establishment and found yourselves shrouded in thick wafts of cigarette smoke upon entering. Leon frowned, coughing as he swatted the air in front of him. Even though you were used to smoking being allowed pretty much everywhere in Germany, your eyes still watered as you pressed up against and squeezed past the mass of bodies in the dimly-lit, dingy bar. The smell on your clothes and hair would take days to get rid of later. It was noisy and chaotic, with nearly every inch of the space occupied by chatty, drunk customers, some more boisterous than the others. You were lucky to find a small, rickety table with two precarious-looking stools at the extreme corner of the room.
Setting your coat and day bag down on one of the stools to claim it, you folded your arms, turned to Leon and remarked, “So… an agent, huh?”
He waved his hand dismissively. “Whiskey first. Then, we’ll talk.”
You rolled your eyes at his standoffish reply, wondering what his problem was. After all these years where he had led you to assume he was dead, and with the circumstances both of you had found each other in, this was the kind of attitude he took with you? A prickling feeling of agitation grew in your chest as you pushed past him, storming towards the bar in annoyance.
Upon approaching it, you breathed out a sigh of relief when you saw that you knew the bartender who was on shift tonight. He usually popped a little extra into your drinks whenever he sensed you had a shitty day. Tonight was no exception.
“Zwei doppelte Kurze Whiskey.” (Two double shots of whiskey.) You raised two fingers at him to spell out your order.
He grunted out an acknowledgement as he got to work, filling two empty glasses with the fiery amber liquor, one glass topped up significantly more than the other.
“Macht er dir Probleme?” (Is he giving you any trouble?) He asked, without looking up from pouring the shots. It seemed like he had noticed your little commotion with Leon from just before.
“Aktuell nicht,” (Not for now.) you answered guardedly.
At this point, Leon had caught up to you, watching as the bartender placed the glass with more whiskey on the counter top in front of you and the one with less before Leon.
Leon huffed at the slight and shook his head. “I’ll take the bottle too.”
The bartender eyed him suspiciously as he plonked the whiskey bottle on the counter loudly, like there was an unspoken competition going on between them.
“Here,” Leon mentioned coolly, sliding a couple of euro bills along the counter to pay for all the drinks. “Keep the change.”
You sighed at the childish display before you, giving the bartender an apologetic look as you took your glass without a word, and settled in at the small table you had informally reserved earlier. The people around you were far more interested in drinking than any conversation you were about to have. Occasionally a fight started, but those responsible were easily cleared out by the staff.
There should be no issues with privacy here, you thought, as you downed your first round of drinks simultaneously with Leon.
The sharp alcohol burned your throat, warming you from the inside. You noticed Leon wincing as he brought the glass to his cut lip, finishing its contents in one clean gulp and wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Did he get hurt in the field? You wondered, but chose not to question it, instead pouring yourself another shot as Leon did likewise.
Frustrated by the ongoing silence between the two of you and Leon’s seeming reluctance to speak, you decided to break the dead air, stating sarcastically, “Anything else you need before we get started? Room service? A hot bath, perhaps?”
He threw back another shot, twisting his lips into a wry smile. “Hm, don’t tempt me.”
“Leon, what happened? All these years… I thought you had died.” You were getting tired of this game and wanted an honest exchange for once.
“I did,” he replied softly.
“Huh?”
Averting his gaze quickly, he shifted in his seat uncomfortably. “It doesn’t matter.”
But you wanted answers. You needed to know what had been haunting him too. “It does to me.”
You reached out to him cautiously, but just as your fingers ghosted the back of his hand, he moved it away, his voice turning cold as ice. “Look, I don’t know what you’re expecting, but it’s been a long time-”
His reaction took you by surprise as you interjected defensively, “Yeah, I can count.”
A long time? If anyone should be able to comprehend that, you were more than qualified.
“I’m not the same guy you used to know back then,” he continued, as if he hadn’t heard you.
“And I’m not the same girl you knew either,” you countered, in a mixture of anger and confusion. He was talking to you like he was blaming you for something. It wasn’t fair and you weren’t going to put up with it anymore. “Stop avoiding the question, Leon.”
“Still as stubborn as hell though,” he muttered.
Your blood boiled at his non-answer. “Is this some kind of joke to you?” You seethed, raising your voice. “I mourned you. The past 7 years. I heard nothing. Your parents heard nothing.” You emphasized each point, taking another shot afterwards to calm your nerves. Your face scrunched up in response to the harsh bite of the liquor. “And now this?”
He paused for a moment, fiddling with the empty glass in his hands, before hesitantly responding, “I got out of Raccoon City. Then, the government asked me to work for them.”
You caught the drift of what he was implying when he stressed the word ‘asked’, like it wasn’t by choice. But you didn’t understand what hold they had on him.
“That’s all you need to know.” Placing his glass back down on the table, he took a swig from the bottle itself this time. The few sentences he gave you had taken a toll on him.
“Why? How did they-”
“The rest is classified,” he snapped through gritted teeth, as a form of warning not to push it any further.
You slumped back in your chair in defeat, realizing that you weren’t much closer to understanding him and what he had gone through.
“Why did you join Silje’s company?” Leon questioned out of the blue, his tone filled with resentment, so much so that you bit your lip in reflex as guilt seeped into your heart.
“After you… die-disappeared, I-I didn’t know what else to do.” You cast your eyes downwards, your voice choking up with emotion as the memories you had suppressed came flooding back, like a gaping wound in your side.
“I had to leave. Everything just-” you paused, clenching your fists so hard that you could see the imprints of your fingernails against your palms. “-reminded me of you.”
At this, his stony gaze faltered slightly and a look of despondence slowly spread across his face.
“You could have gone anywhere else, but you just had to choose her, didn’t you?” He uttered somewhat accusingly. “You really shouldn’t get involved in this.”
“A bit too late for that,” you argued. Did he think you couldn’t hold your own?
“You can still walk away,” he offered.
Shaking your head, you peered back at him defiantly. “I’m not leaving you.”
“That’s what you said last time,” he retorted bitterly, his brows etched together in a frown. “Look at how that turned out.”
Your mouth ran dry, and it felt as if you had been given a tight slap across your cheek.
So this was what it was all about? He still faulted you for what happened in the past? The most troubling thing was that you had nothing to say to that. You truly held yourself accountable for whatever that had gone wrong.
“Is this why you want to get rid of me?” It came out as a bare whisper.
He shrugged impassively, unable to meet your eyes like he was hiding something. “It’s just better this way.”
Your mind was going round in circles as you were put on the spot. However, something inside you kept rebelling against what Leon had to say. You couldn’t abandon him again. Not like this, even though he claimed it was the better route to take. Didn’t he once tell you to trust him to make his own decisions? Then, he should offer you the same courtesy. You weren’t about to throw in the towel and give up now.
So instead of running away like he expected you to, you pushed back. “No.”
Leon narrowed his eyes. “What?”
“I said no,” you repeated again resolutely. “We have a job to do. I’m helping you to infiltrate this base whether you like it or not.”
His lips were drawn into a thin line as he brooded quietly in the corner, but he continued to hear you out.
“Once that’s done, we can go back to our own separate lives if you want,” you stated. “Just like how it was.”
A fair compromise. Although deep down you hoped it wouldn’t mark the end of your interactions with Leon. Well, you’ll cross that bridge when you come to it.
After a while of considering your suggestion, he agreed warily, “Ok.”
His gaze was impenetrable while both of you drank in silence. At some point, you decided to call it a night, since you had an early start with him tomorrow to go over your next plan of action. It was drizzling when you came out of the bar, the water droplets falling on your face like a baptism of a new chapter. You had made your bed, now you had to lie in it.
As Leon called for another cab to take him back to where he was staying, you left without a word, walking on your own to the nearest U-Bahn station. He watched you until you were just a tiny speck in his vision, lost amongst the sea of people and glowing street lights.
━━━━━━━━━━━
You and Leon were standing in front of the dining table of his service apartment, a mess of papers sprawled across every surface. He rested his curled fingers under his chin, eyeing the diagrams and notes scribbled on the sheets like a hawk, analyzing them for any obvious patterns.
He picked up a report that you had drafted recently. “So Silje told you all of this?”
You yawned and sipped at the instant coffee Leon had offered you when you had arrived. It was a couple of hours earlier than when you were normally up, as you’d have to head over to the theater to train after this meeting. You had pushed away whatever thoughts you had resulting from the conversation with Leon last night to the back of your mind, in favor of professionalism. Afterall, it wasn’t your first rodeo pretending things were fine, and neither was it Leon’s.
“Some of it, yes. Though in her own way of speaking in riddles,” you explained. “The rest I had overheard or tailed her without her knowing.”
“Are you sure you weren’t spotted?” It sounded like a mixture of concern and him questioning your abilities, the latter of which irritated you a little.
“If I was, would I still be standing here?” You stated brusquely.
“Fair enough.”
You pointed at the blueprint map again, tracing the outlines of your markings with your fingers as you explained, “From what I gathered, the site has two main sections beyond the theater space. The upper levels are easily accessible, but shaped like a labyrinth. I haven’t explored everything yet, but if my gut feeling is right, I would say that the entrance leading further down might be all the way over here.” You tapped at the red circle with a question mark drawn on the map.
“The lower levels are only accessible via keycard. Obviously Silje has one, but there must be others too,” you reasoned.
“That said, I’ve seen her bringing in the same man more than once. Business type, probably in his 60s, speaking German with a Swiss accent.” Then, you proceeded to describe his outward appearance in further detail.
“Silje always passed him off as being part of the company board. I doubt it though,” you shrugged.
Leon hummed in response, and the corners of his mouth turned slightly upward, as if he was trying to hold back a smile. It was the first sign of approval he showed you since you had reconnected.
As he thumbed through the rest of the papers, he cocked his head to the side, tapping his fingers on the table absentmindedly. “One thing I don’t get from this is why she’s confided in you.”
You nipped your lip, swallowing anxiously, as you were afraid of disclosing what you might have committed yourself to.
“She wanted to offer me a gift,” you whispered.
“A gift?” He tensed up noticeably at the word. “Did you accept?”
“Um… yes?” You replied uneasily, but tried to persuade him that nothing else had happened yet. “She only told me it would come soon.”
The drumming of his fingers on the table stopped abruptly, as he gripped the edge of it, clenching his jaw as he spoke, “Why the fuck would you do something like that?”
“I-I thought it would help,” you stuttered, caught off-guard by the sudden shift in his mood.
“What exactly has Bergmann told you about this case?” He hissed.
“That Silje was suspected of harboring some bioterrorists.”
You flinched as he cursed a second time loudly, before muttering a quick, “Excuse me for a minute.” With that, he darted out of the room into the hallway to make a call.
So here you were, left alone without answers again. The secrecy surrounding the entire mission and Leon’s erratic behavior was starting to grate on you, but there wasn’t much you could do about it.
Past the hallway, out of sight and earshot, Leon had connected with Hunnigan on comms.
“Leon,” she greeted. “Any news?”
“Our old friend, the Plaga,” he stated. “Seems like our suspicions might be right.”
“You have the source to back that up?” She asked out of habit, even though she already knew the answer.
“I went through the documents. I’m not 100%, but it’s close.”
He detailed an abnormality that stood out during the investigations. “A few days ago, some people on site experienced temporary psychotic episodes where their veins turned black, but reverted back to normal after.”
“That’s aligning with whatever intel we’ve already picked up. It could be a new strain of the Plaga,” he concluded.
Hunnigan nodded. “We’ll require a sample for the labs when you’re in the base. Anything you need me to do?”
“Run some files on any surviving Los Iluminados members. Focus on trade routes with Germany,” he requested. “The informant mentioned Silje entertaining a particular ‘business partner’ on a regular basis.”
“On it.” She typed away furiously at a computer keyboard off-screen.
“Another thing,” Leon commented. “Why wasn’t the informant told about the real nature of this situation?”
“That was under Bergmann’s discretion.”
He scoffed derisively. “She’s putting her in danger. The informant has no idea what she’s risking here. Silje just offered her the ‘gift’ and you and I know what that means.”
“Leon, you know the rules,” Hunnigan sighed sympathetically. “We don’t really have much say in this jurisdiction.”
“What do you mean? She reports to HQ!”
“Yeah, and they’ve given her free reign,” she explained, without batting an eyelid.
“In-fucking-credible.” He rolled his eyes.
“You need to press on. The informant has the best chance of getting you in,” she reasoned, giving pause and contemplating her next choice of words before speaking. “I would suggest not getting too attached to her.”
“I’m not,” Leon deadpanned, despite the look on Hunnigan’s face, like she didn’t believe him.
“At the rate this is going, she may not be around long enough to do her job,” he clarified.
“You know we have a cure for that,” she rebutted. “The girl will be fine.”
He pursed his lips, changing the subject. “Hm, just send me the updates later.”
With that, he shut off his comms device and headed back into the living room, only to be accosted by your snide remark, “Let me guess, another convo that’s classified?”
His mouth twisted into a smirk. “Not quite.”
“Whatever Bergmann has been feeding you is bullshit,” he began. “We’ve been suspecting that the theater is being used as a front for developing a new batch of bioweapons they’re about to ship into the US.”
Your eyes widened at the newfound information. The whole time you had assumed that Silje was just providing a safehouse, not a full-on experimentation chamber. But with the recent events that had occurred, you should have considered it earlier.
“So the labs must be underground.” He thumped the pad of his index finger on the sketchings of the lower levels of the site on the map. “And they’re not just hiding people down there.”
Casting over a solemn glance, he revealed, “I’m telling you this, because you need to be careful.”
“And stop making deals you shouldn’t be making,” he warned.
You let the words sink in. “I see,” you nodded slowly. “Thanks, I… appreciate that.”
“The minute you feel something is off, or your veins start to darken, you contact me straight away and get the hell outta there. Understood?”
“Ok, I will,” you promised.
On the one hand, you were grateful that Leon had the courtesy to inform you about what you were getting into, but on the other, you were scared of what was to come. You had heard about the Terragrigia Panic and the B.O.W.s that devastated the floating city a year ago. The gruesome scenes were splashed across the news for weeks. Would the same happen here?
As if he could read your mind, Leon placed a hand on your shoulder to reassure you. “I won’t let them get you.”
“I trust you.” You said it as if it was clear as day.
His eyes bore into yours and his hand made its way towards your cheek, but stopped short in midair, a hair’s breadth away from touching your skin. Then, it fell to the side as he turned away, like he was ashamed of what had just transpired.
You cleared your throat in awkwardness, trying to recall the next point on the meeting agenda. Ah yes, Till.
Till was a fence you got to know from the parties you frequented. He was a friend of a friend of a… you got the idea. At first, you bought your drugs from his minions in the clubs, but then became a regular client of his the moment you started your informant career.
“As requested, I’ve arranged a meeting with Till.” You grabbed your day bag from the seat you had left it on. “He operates out of a nightclub that has a pretty strict door policy. So you’ll have to look the part.”
Leon raised an eyebrow. “Which would be?”
You sighed, unsure of how this would go down. “Um, your usual black get-up will do,” you mentioned tentatively. Unzipping your bag, which unveiled a sneak peek of its contents, you peered back at him. Here goes nothing. “So are you a more of a latex or leather kind of guy?”
What you would have given to permanently capture the look of shock on Leon’s face.
“Are you fucking serious?” He blurted out.
Perhaps you should make the decision for him then. Giving him a once over, you identified a common theme with his casual leather jacket and fingerless gloves.
“I’m guessing leather,” you discerned, rummaging through your bag for a studded harness and tossing it over to him.
He caught the chunky material in his hands, looking at it with apprehension whilst shaking his head.
Fishing out a translucent, black crop top, you displayed it in front of Leon as you walked over to him. “Maybe over this and a pair of leather boxers.”
He grimaced. “No.”
Well, he sure wasn’t making your job easy. “I’ll be doing most of the ass-kissing at the door,” you argued. “You just have to wear this and keep your mouth shut.”
Please go along with it, you prayed. There was only so much magic you could pull to get him in at the club door.
Examining the outfit you had picked out for him gingerly, he muttered, “Jesus Christ, you’ve gotta be kidding me.”
At least he wasn’t protesting any further.
“I’ll meet you there at 4 in the morning on Sunday,” you reminded him. “You’d better have something substantial to trade with.”
“That’s the least of my concerns right now,” he grumbled, to which you snickered in amusement before departing for the theater.

You couldn't stand school. At least you were going into your senior year, the only thing keeping you calm beyond the panic, knowing you'd be back to school again in three months.
Your parents won a 300 grand lottery ticket, so why not bust it on their soon-to-be graduate?
You picked a vacation to Leipzig, Germany. You really just wanted to experience a lot of the tourist attractions, and your family agreed. Who could say no to drag racing fancy cars, art museums, ghost hunting, and riverside forest tours?
Adrenaline courses through your veins as you step onto the airplane, knowing this was sucking probably thousands of dollars out of your parents bank accounts.
Your iPod rests in your hand, wired earbuds stuck into your ears, your favorite songs playing as you lead your younger siblings to your seats.
This was gonna be the best summer ever.
Your first week went as expectations had gone. You spent the first few days just exploring and getting to know the area all while trying out all the restaurants you could. The food was good, that's for sure.
The hotel you were staying at, the Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel Handelshof, was also quite the attraction itself. The exterior was wrapped in castle-like architecture, the pallete a light tan and soft red. The inside was even better, feeling like another, very distant, home. Luxurious, to say the least, which you weren't all that used to.
Home wasn't this fancy. It didn't have golden accents, bright white lights along the large mirror above the couples sinks. The bathtub wasn't as big as a baseball field, and your beds weren't laced with silky sheets. Weird for 2008, but alright.
Sadly, those silky sheets that retained all the nice, cool air in your room were thrown up on by your younger brother the morning before you went to go drag race fancy cars. Fuck.
Turns out, he'd come down with a bad fever and couldn't go anywhere. Your plans were soiled and your parents needed someone to go pick up some food and medication.
Of course, you were the scapegoat who wasn't going to bring your little sister along. She wouldn't be interested anyway, too absorbed by the television playing My Little Pony.
So, you got to walking down to the nearest convenience store all by your lonesome in a country you were just visiting for the summer. You'd only been here three weeks and shit was going bad.
What was even worse was that there'd be no possible way to rebook your tickets to another time, meaning you'd never get to experience a rush of pure adrenaline in a fast car in Germany. Hell, you wouldn't have a chance to do this back home, let alone do it yourself in your college years. You didn't have a death wish.
You solemnly walk down the sidewalk, passing many of local residents and other tourists, trying to navigate your way down to anywhere that sold soda, crackers, and Pepto Bismol.
As you walk in and scan the aisles, finding crackers and soda just fine, you realize you can't read German, meaning you couldn't actually tell which bottle of liquid medicine was what you wanted. Motherfucker. You knew you should've taken German your freshman year.
You stand frozen in front of the shelves, trying to make out whichever one could've been 'Pepto Bismol' in German. Fucking hell, why would it have been translated and how? Why would it even be in a different bottle?
"Hey, are you looking for something?"
Your head quickly snaps up to the voice who was speaking to you. It was a boy who'd noticed your increasingly nervous body language and paralyzed staring. He wears a white jacket with a thick, tan stripe across it over a matching shirt, which is paired with baggy jeans, flat Nike's and a white baseball hat. Underneath the hat is a head full of brunette locs, which are surprisingly well tamed for a skater looking boy.
"Uhm," you glance between him and the shelf nervously. "Pepto Bismol."
"Oh," he softly chuckles, grabbing a bottle right off the shelf, handing it to you. "Here you go,"
"Thanks" you nervously smile, thanking him for the favor.
He glances down at the items shoved in your arms, raising an eyebrow. "Odd selection."
"My brother got sick," you answer. "My parents both had to stay at the hotel with my siblings apparently. I'm the only one responsible enough I guess,"
He nods, his hands shoved in his pockets. You'd just noticed he wears a lip piercing, and had black sunglasses resting over his hat. "How long are you staying?"
"All summer. Going back the last day of August."
"Oh, wow. Nice."
You nod. "Parents won a little fortune off the lottery and wanted to do something nice for me since I'm graduating this next year,"
The corners of his lips shape upward, "Me too. You need any tourism suggestions? There's so many places to go all around here,"
"Oh, I'm good," you shake your head, pulling the cash your parents handed you out of your pockets. "I don't know how long my brother's gonna be sick. My family's on the 'if one person loses everyone does' mindset. It's bullshit. Wasted my own money on reservations for something and I can't get them refunded and I can't go,"
He nods, curious. "Where to?"
"Drag racing thing. It's called Pure Adrenaline Rush,"
He nods with a soft smile, familiar with the name. "That place honestly sucks anyways. I could give you a way better show, for free even," he pulls a pair of car keys from one of his pockets, swinging them on the index finger of his right hand.
You chuckle, gracious for the offer. "Thanks, but I'm good. I have to sit around a hotel room until my brother feels better," you speak, rolling your eyes.
"Your parents won't let you have your own fun even after your plans got canceled? It wasn't in your hands?" he questions, following you up to the registers.
You shrug. "I dunno, dude. I could try begging them, but I doubt it'll go my way. They'll bring up how I picked to come here and how expensive it was and how I can spend some time with my family,"
He shrugs, "I'll drive you back to your hotel, yeah?"
You sigh, realizing your legs were practically numb after the mile long walk you'd have to take down here. "Okay, fine,"
He smiles, leading you out after you pay for your items, a plastic bag swinging in your hand. A black convertible rests across the street, three other figures sitting in the passenger seats. You look at the boy with the locs, seeing him jogging to the car.
The boy in the front raises an eyebrow, his eyes landing on you. He looks back up at the boy with the locs, brushing his fine, straight brown hair back with his hand. "Who's that?"
"No one, just taking them back to their hotel,"
"Where's our snacks?" another boy asks, his eyes confusingly following the first boy's figure. His hair is black with some white streaks, laying straight and flat.
The last boy with short, blonde hair is silent, just listening.
"Georg, move to the back," the boy with the locs speaks.
Georg, the boy with the long hair, sighs, unbuckling his seat belt before sliding to the back between the other two boys. The boy you met in the store turns back to you, inviting you to the front passengers seat.
You accept, jumping in, the bag at your feet.
"Thanks for the ride,"
"No problem,"
You definitely didn't get to go drag racing that day, but you did end up sneaking out to hang out with the boy with the convertible that night. His name was Tom, as you'd found out. His brother was the one with the black hair, Bill. The blonde haired boy was Gustav, and the brunette was obviously Georg. They were pretty cool friends, to be honest.
As they wait for you, Bill leans up toward Tom from the backseat. "Don't catch feelings. They're only going to be staying for three months,"
"I won't," Tom grumbles, rolling his eyes.
"He's catching feelings-"
You zip your jacket up as you approach, jumping into the passengers seat, beside Tom. His sunglasses rest over his eyes now, ironic as the sun was long gone.
"Hey," he nods
"Hi," you smile, strapping your seat belt into the buckle.
He hands you his iPhone 2, the aux cord connected to the car radio. "Wanna pick some music?"
"Uh, sure," you nod, accepting the offer.
Yeesh, those accents got you down bad now. Sleep deprivation made you feel real damn funky. You scroll down his iTunes to Everlong by Foo Fighters.
Tom smiles, holding up a fist for you to bump. "Foo Fighters, yeah?"
You bump his fist with yours, mentally preparing yourself to dangerously speed with a bunch of kids you'd just met hours prior in the dead of night. You couldn't lie, the car was pretty hot itself. Don't get yourself started on-
"Ready?"
"Set!"
"Go!"
"Get out of my car."

Dear friends and loved ones,
I reach out to you with a heavy heart, as my family is enduring unimaginable hardship. Amidst the crisis engulfing our region, their suffering has worsened in ways that words cannot express. They are facing severe shortages of food and water, struggling to meet their basic needs, let alone secure the necessary medical care to cope with daily life’s challenges.
Donation link (GFM)
Their home, once a safe haven where the family gathered, no longer provides the comfort and security they so desperately need. Their small dreams are now threatened by these difficult circumstances. They need medicine, warmth, and food to grant them a measure of peace and dignity in this harsh world.
Today, I reach out to you with a heart full of hope, asking you to stand with us in this crisis. Together, we can ease some of their pain and meet the simplest needs for a decent life. Any contribution, no matter how small, will have a huge impact and will restore hope and smiles to their faces, which have been devoid of joy in these recent days.
We are in desperate need of your support, so please do not leave us alone in this hardship. May your generosity be a lifeline for my family and help ease their suffering.
Thank you from the depths of our hearts, and may God bless each and every helping hand.
I hope this translation captures the same emotional tone as the original Arabic text. Let me know if you need any adjustments!

I am Alia, 35 years old, a Palestinian from Gaza. I currently reside in Gaza.Right now I have 7 members of my family, including 4 children, my mother, my father. I am starting a fundraiser to save the lives of my immediate family members, I am their only hope to get out of Gaza to Egypt and then to Germany in order to be safe again. Please help me save my family's lives. Whenever I have a chance to sleep, I wake up right away to see if my family is still alive, it is hard to live here due to the current situation where there is no electricity, connection, fuel, water or food, which makes our health condition worse, I am worried that I will lose my family any moment. Hearing bombs and explosions scare us, so we flee from place to place looking for safety. We can't find any medication and we keep getting sick and we don't have access to health care. Many of my family members have been killed, and many other members are missing under rubble, we don't know if they are alive or dead. Please help me collect the application fees and travel costs for seven people.To facilitate me and my family's evacuation from Gaza and to Germany I'm setting up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $30,000. Here is the breakdown of the funds: • It is estimated that $3000 will be sufficient to cover the basic needs of my family including their accommodation, food, and other essentials.Has to be allocated to cover the expenses associated with obtaining permits to leave Gaza, as well as crossing fees at Rafah, at the Egypt-Gaza border. This amount breaks down to $6000 per person (3 people). 3000$ for children under 18 years (4people). The cost of travel from Gaza to Germany $3000 . The cost for visa applications and all the costs related to reunion is $700 per person. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a significant difference to the safety of me and my family.

Fundraisers for people/families trying to escape genocide
Have come across so many Palestinian people and family struggling to find funds to escape (which is ridiculous itself). Wanted to compile a list of as many as I can find with a small summary for those interested.
A plea for Humanity to help my family escape gaza
Summary: Thaer Aburaida is a student completing residency in Germany. However, her family of 15 are stuck in Gaza. The youngest being triplet babies with little access to formula. There are also a 2, 3, and 4 year old. Funds will be used to help them escape as well as healthcare as they are currently sick.
Emergency: help me evacuate my family from Gaza
Summary: Rawan AbuMahady, a 30-year-old Palestinian-currently residing in Canada, is a social worker and researcher who grew up on Gaza. She is recovering from PTSD due to what she has witnessed. Her younger sisters and parents still remain in Palestine, however. Her younger sisters, Hadeel (24)and Ayah(22 years old), has been expereincing severe panic attacks and have no access to food or clean water. Her mom has Type 2 Diabetes and was scheduled for eye surgery. However, she has had no access to insulin or any medical care for the past 3 months. Despite Rawan’s relentless efforts to reach the Canadian embassy and multiple international NGO’s through various channels, she has not received any help. However, her family has found a way to escape to Egypt for $7,000 each. While Rawan is financially independent and proud of the life she has made, she cannot afford a fee this high. As her family needs more than just fleeing to Egypt. Funds will first go to passes to get to Egypt, and any extra funds will go to transportation costs between Al-Nusierat camp to Rafah City, costs for any more travel, and possibly helping with food and shelter.
Gaza: Help my family afford emergency surgeries
Summary: Nouran is an artist whose family has suffered injuries during the bombings. The injuries are brutal. Her brother lost his right eye and ear, and suffered a skull fracture. Shrapnel has destroyed his right ear canal, and he’s completely deaf on that side. Nouran also lost her right eye. She also suffered major soft tissue trauma to my forehead and scalp. Her dad has completely lost his right calf muscle and can no longer walk without support. He can’t get surgery right now because there are no doctors here that know how to give epidural anaesthesia. Her mom has an untreated broken jaw and can no longer eat solid food. In the time since she was injured, she has lost over 14kg. All donations will go to treating their wounds. Medicines like antibiotics, anaesthesia, and pain relief are extremely expensive and difficult to get because of supply issues. They are also low on food with savings going fast. She has family in Ireland who can help with travel after they can escape, but they need help immediately with their health.
help a family have a chance in life
Summary: Dr. Haya Ahmed Hegazy is a 28 years old Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Despite her and her family themselves having to flee, she has been doing everything she can to provide free healthcare to fellow refugees, including helping woman give birth safely. She needs money to escape with her family where she hopes to complete her studies and return to help with more knowledge
Help Abdallah Zaqout and Family of 10 Evacuate
Summary: Abdallah Zaqout, a young man who has recently watched his friends be martyred, and his family of 10 need help escaping Gaza. His family includes multiple young children, sleeping in leaking tents and suffering intense anxiety. You can find Abdallah @/abdallah_zaqout on Instagram and the creator of the fundraiser is taking questions on their Instagram, @/tigerlily4448
Help me and my family to escape from Gaza war!
Summary: Thaer Inshasi, is a radiologist living in the Gaza Strip. He has five siblings, one with a two year old child. All ten family members are currently living in a 3*3 room with no electricity, gas, or human toilet as well as no access to clean water or food. He is trying to find asylum for him and his family in Belgium. He needs $40,000 to get to Egypt and $40,000 to get him and his family to Belgium.
Help Moaiad escape Gaza to become a Doctor
Summary: Moaiad Aljamal, 21, lives in Gaza and is a 3rd year medical student trying to immigrate to Egypt to complete his degree. When attending school in Palestine, he was in the top 2 percentile of his classes. He plans to be a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He has a family of nine all still stuck in Gaza, living in a refugee camp close to the border. The $8,000 will be used to help Moaiad cross into Egypt where he plans to finish education and hopefully make enough money to help the rest of his family leave.
Help my family evacuate Gaza
Summary: Rana Muneer is currently stuck with his family of five in the Gaza Strip, including her husband and three children. Her husband is supervisor in the ministry of heritage and she is a teacher. She has been forced to flee several times and is very low on supplies, including supplies for their two year old who still needs diapers and milk. They also have little access to medicine, food, and water. All funds will be used to buy supplies immediately for survival and to help flee.
Help Evacuate My Family from Gaza
Summary: Mahmoud Zaqout is attempting to raise money to help him and his family flee to Egypt. His sister is living in inhumane conditions in a refugee camp after recently giving birth. Her, her husband, and three other children are all sick, starving, and traumatized.
Help me rebuild my life & rebuild my family's home
Summary: Ali from Gaza is raising money to pay off debt from his bombed clothing store. His home has also been bombed. He and his family, including young children, are desperate to escape and, though he’s already done so much to work tirelessly for his family, is willing to do it again to resettle his family. He is looking to escape and have a safe net of money to recover as he starts over.
Help my Arabic teacher and his family flee Gaza
Summary: Mumen and his wife, Aya, and their 5-year-old daughter, Zaina, lived in Gaza City until the extreme bombardment started in October, along with his two parents, Ghazi and Zainab, and 10 siblings. Mumen, Aya and Zaina fled by foot, walking south, with nothing but whatever money they had on them. Along the way they were shot at "mockingly" (shooting at the ground just by their feet) by Israeli soldiers - one of many traumatic experiences they have endured. They have received the news their home has been destroyed. They have come to selling Aya’s jewelry to get by. They have almost raised enough money to cover the cost for him and his eight family members to escape to Egypt, but they still need basic necessities. In the event they cannot escape, all funds will be used for necessities
Help me REUNITE with my family.
Summary: Ola Masoud, her husband, and her children were very fortunate to escape to Egypt from Palestine before it was too late. However, her brother, Mostafa Masoud, and his family remain stuck in Gaza. They are relying on wood to make fires. They are a family of nine, two children studying medicine, all with dreams. Each member of the family needs at least $6,000 CAD for each family member to leave Gaza. All money will be to pay for permits for them to do so.
Help my family to escape GAZA
Summary: Sondos Maher, 27, is a mother of three. Her and her husband have studied hard to achieve their dream life. However, she has been forced to leave her husband behind and flee with their children. ~~~~~~~
April 1945 Sturzelberg, Germany
For once, the men of Easy Company enjoy themselves. Captain Spiers continued mailing home several valuables he's plundered from wealthier houses. George Luz and Frank Perconte forage at a farm for eggs while a farm girl stumbles upon the men in her family’s barn. George ultimately gets slapped in the face after attempting to flirt with her. While the boys kept busy with their activities, President Roosevelt was pronounced dead back in the states.
The company prepares to move on to their new headquarters in Landsberg to deal with bands of Waffen-SS whom Hitler has ordered to fight a guerilla war in the Alps. The men hastily loaded up their duffels and gear onto deuce trucks.
“I got it, Gams.” Liebgott insisted as he took your gear bag from you tossing it up to Webster on the bed of the truck.
“Danken dir, meyn libe.” (y) (Thank you, my love). You say while you affectionately squeeze his arm as you pass him to board the truck.
Webster offered his hand to you to help you up while Liebgott lifted you by the waist.
“Up ya go, doll.” Liebgott grunted as he hoisted you up with ease.
~~~~~~~
The ride through the mountains could be considered almost a pleasant experience. With the sun shining and the spring scenery through Bavaria had the men in high spirits as they begin singing "Blood upon the Risers.” You listen to the boys singing and enjoying themselves eliciting a smile from you. For once they sang for you and not the other way around.
🎶“Gory, gory what a helluva way to die! Gory, gory what a helluva way to die! He ain’t gonna jump no more!” 🎶
They all belted out in unison.
“Hey, Y/F/N, you ain’t singin’!” Luz declared.
You chuckle, “I’m relaxin’, George. I’ll sing for you boys when we get there.” You reply with a wink.
~~~~~~~
As the company arrived to a village halfway to the destination, the officers were in agreement to stop and rest for the night. Speirs ordered Easy to clear a lavish building with many flats to designate as billeting for the men to sleep for the night. The occupants of the home were resistant, and were quite vocal about being evicted from their ritzy residence.
“Was machst du!? Raus aus meinem Haus! (g)(What are you doing!? Get out of my house!)” A German woman of one of the apartments yelled repeatedly at the men when they stormed in.
“Tell her she’s got five minutes.” Speirs called over to Liebgott.
“Raust! Raust! Du hast fünf Minuten! (g) (Out! Out! You got five minutes!)” Liebgott barked at the woman.
The woman shrilled pleas in German to him while Joe tried to talk over her cries.
“Sir, she says they’ve got nowhere to go, but the house next door is empty-“ Liebgott translated.
The rest of Easy ushered men, women and children from other living quarters out into the hallways and out the main door.
“We’re only gonna be here one night! You got four minutes!” Speirs shouts over the woman’s protests.
Joe relayed Speirs’ message to the woman as he shooed her out of the room.
~~~~~~~
You lug your bag up to the second floor of the building, looking forward to the hot shower you’re about to have. You peek through the first door at the top of the stairs and see a well put together parlor with a welcoming seating area and a full liquor display on a bar trolly in the corner. You find the master bedroom with a bed fit for a queen. You release a long sigh of relief as you imagine the restful night of sleep you’ll have later.
You set your duffel on a antique bench seat at the foot of the bed, then sit on the chair at the vanity table to untie your boots when you suddenly hear the door to the apartment open and slam shut.
“Honey, I’m home!” Liebgott’s voice carried through the flat.
You giggle as you shake your head while you proceed to remove your boot.
“Hey, Gams, where you at?”
“In here, Joe!” You call out.
Liebgott appeared in the door way. When he saw you sitting at the make-up table, he smirked as he leaned on his elbow against the door frame. He stood there staring at you as you started removing your other boot. You look up at him.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” You ask him as you eyeball him skeptically.
“Like what?” He scoffed.
You laugh, “Like you’re starved and I’m a T-bone steak.”
Joe chuckled as he slowly strolled into the room towards you.
“I was just thinkin’.”
“About what?”
“About the last time I was alone in a room with you.”
You feel a flutter in your stomach, “Oh? In Holland?”
Joe nodded, “Yeah, when you were fixin’ my neck up in that barn.”
He stood in the middle of the room with his hands in his pockets studying you adoringly with a lazy smile. You smile at him as you stand to walk to him.
“An unforgettable day that was.” You say.
His smile widened, “That was five months ago, ya know?”
Your face twisted up as you recall how long ago Crossroads was.
“You’re right. Time flies when you’re having fun, huh?
He hummed in agreement. You turn away and enter the bathroom undoing your hair from the bun you had it in.
“Have you found a place to sleep?” You project from the bathroom.
“Sure did.” Joe replied as he situated himself onto your bed, getting comfy.
You walk back into the room, “Oh no you don’t.” You scold.
“What?”
“You can’t sleep in here.” You state.
“And why the hell not?” He retorted.
“Well, what would people say? It’s not-” You try to continue, “-It’s not proper, you know?”
Joe raised his eyebrow at you.
“Since when have I been proper?” He asked seductively with a wink as he got up from the bed, making his way towards you.
“Joe…” you cautioned as he progressively closed the gap between you.
A mischievous grin tugged at the corners of his mouth as he slinked his arms around your waist, “What?”
You rest your hands on his chest giving him a gentle push as you lean away from him. You knew what he was up to, and you weren’t going to cave to him. His hands were firmly pressed against the small of your back pulling you closer to him.
“You ain’t gettin’ rid of me that easy.” He said in his low gravelly voice.
You felt yourself unravel in his arms, fighting the smile he was bringing to your face to not fuel his behavior.
“Joseph Liebgott, what would everyone think if they found out you spent the night in my room with me!?”
Joe chuckled, “I think they’d say, about time!”
You let out an exasperated sigh, “Joe, I’m serious.”
He rolled his eyes, “Look, Gams, we ain’t gotta do nothin’, aight? I just wanna hold my girl until I fall asleep. Just the two of us. Nobody’s gonna say anything, ok?” He reassured.
You narrow your eyes suspiciously at him.
“Besides, there ain’t no way I’m not staying in here with you tonight. I’ve been waiting almost two years to hold you in bed without all the guys snoring in the same room.” Joe added.
~~~~~~~
The following morning, Easy loaded back up onto the trucks to Landsberg. Along the way, they witness over 300,000 newly-surrendered German POW's marching past; noticing that they continue to march proudly even in defeat, Webster begins ranting angrily at the Germans for starting a war they could never have hoped to win, and uprooting his and his fellow soldiers' lives.
“Hey, YOU! You stupid Kraut bastards! That’s right! Say hello to Ford and General fucking Motors! You stupid fascist pigs! Look at you! You have horses, what were you thinking!?” Webster bellowed out at the sea of marching Nazi soldiers.
Webster sat down hard on the bench of the truck, running his hands through his hair mumbling expletives to himself before standing to erupt more shame at the Germans.
“What the fuck are we doing here!?”
Everyone remained silent, allowing Web to violently rant because they agreed with every word he said. As the trucks approached the entrance of Landsberg, they witness French soldiers summarily executing three Germans. A replacement is shaken, looking to you and the boys alarmed, but Perconte simply shrugs at him, while Liebgott looks smug.
The trucks roll up to the town square and come to a halt. The men begin to stir, offloading from the rears of the vehicles with their gear.
“I wanna send out some patrols. We’ll have Dog Company here in the village, and easy and Fox in the woods.” Winters directs to Speirs and Welsh.
Speirs turns to Welsh, “Easy Company’s gonna take the North-West. LT Lipton.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Have 1st and 2nd platoons swing up to the woods, and have 3rd swing around. Make sure they bring a medic.” Speirs ordered.
~~~~~~~
Easy trekked through the thickets surrounding Landsberg, bantering and joking like they’re strolling through a park.
“O’Keefe-“ Bull said as he tapped the replacement’s arm.
“Sarge?”
“Why the hell you so jumpy, boy?” Bull asked smirking when he saw O’Keefe’s worried expression.
“I-I’m not jumpy-“
“You can hear your heart pounding in Arkansas, boy.”
You scoff, “Give the kid a break, Bull.” You say with empathy.
“Hey, George, does this kinda remind you of Bastogne?” Perconte asked.
George looked around, “Yeah, now that you mention it. Except, of course, there’s no snow, we got warm grub in our bellies, and the trees aren’t fucking exploding from Kraut artillery. But, yeah, Frank, other than that, it’s a lot like Bastogne.” Luz replied sarcastically.
“Right?” Perconte agreed.
“Bull, smack him for me, please?” Luz called back to Randleman.
Bull smiled through his cigar as he swat the back of Perconte’s helmet.
“Thank you.”
As you all came close to a clearing at the tree line , you can hear shuffling and rustling near by. The platoon made their rifles ready in case it was the enemy.
“Stay behind us.” Bull whispered to you. You nod.
As you all entered the opening beyond the woods, your eyes fall upon an encampment of some kind. Rows of long, narrow ‘hut’ like buildings locked up within fence line. You look through the barbed wire walls, and see a handful of sickly beings shuffling aimlessly on the main path.
“What is this?” Luz asked baffled by the scene.
More people in striped clothing emerged from the huts, lining up along the inside of the fence.
“Looks like—a prison.” You say as you slowly make your way forward in front of the guys.
~~~~~~~
Perconte was sent back to the town to retrieve Winters and the rest of Easy Company to see what they found on patrol.
Winters and the rest of the company arrive on the scene, all eyes glued to the horrific display beyond the barbed wire. Winters and Nixon walked up to you, Bull, and Luz. Winters surveyed the sullen faces that stared back at him through the fence. Eugene came straight to you as soon as he got off the truck.
“Hey, Y/F/N.”
“Eugene.” You greet dryly.
“What’s happening ‘ere?” Gene asked motioning with his head to the camp.
“They’re definitely POW’s. Just look at ‘em…those poor souls.” You reply softly, too emotional to raise your voice.
Nixon came to you and Eugene.
“I want you two to take Dog and Fox medics and give these guys a look over once we get in, ok?”
“Yes, sir.” Eugene confirmed.
Perconte and Christenson opened the first set of gates for Winters. As Winters entered, he directed them to open the second gate. You and Eugene walked ahead motioning the other medics to follow.
The prisoners were all male, skeletal with sunken faces and ghostly complexions. The smell of rot and decay filled the air. The residents of this hell began tugging and grabbing at the soldiers as they entered, muttering implorations in a different language.
All the prisoners are near death, seriously ill or starving, some so weakened that they collapse as they try to approach the Americans. While many more are dead as corpses litter the area, Malarkey and Heffron grimly note the number tattoos on dead prisoners' arms marking them "like cattle.” Randleman and Luz discover a hut jam-packed with living and dead prisoners lying shoulder to shoulder.
“Christenson, any of your men speak German?” Winters asked.
“No, sir. But we got Y/L/N here that does—”Christenson offered.
“I need Liebgott..LIEBGOTT!” Winters yelled over the men, “Lipton, find me Liebgott.”
“Sir, I can help.” You insist to Winters as you push through the rabble.
Winters looked at you, “These people need care, you go ahead with Doc Roe and figure out how to help these people.”
Liebgott pushed through the crowd, “Right here, sir.”
One prisoner Winters had pulled aside started speaking to Joe in German.
“He said the guards left this morning, sir—they burned some of the huts first…with the prisoners still in them, sir—alive.”
“Jesus Christ.” Nixon uttered in disgust.
The man continued.
“Some of the prisoners tried to stop them…some of them were killed.”
Liebgott paused to listen, “They didn’t have enough ammo for all of the prisoners, so…they killed as many as they could…before they left the camp…they locked the gates behind them and headed South.”
“Someone in the town must’ve told them we were coming.” Nixon said.
“Yeah, I think so.” Liebgott agreed.
“Will you ask him what kind of camp this is? Why are they here?” Winters requested.
“Was ist das für ein Lager? Warum bist du hier?” Liebgott relayed.
The man struggled to answer.
“He says it’s a work camp for, uh, ‘unerwunscht’… I’m not sure what the word means, sir. Uh, unwanted, disliked maybe?’
“Criminals?” Nixon asked.
“Eh, I don’t think criminals, sir,” the man proceeded to explain, “…doctors, musicians, tailors, clerks, farmers, intellectuals, I mean, normal people.”
“Juden…Juden…” the man repeated.
Liegott’s jaw clenched.
“They’re Jews…poles and gypsies.”
The prisoner began to sob, pointing beyond the trees stuttering and hiccuping as he spoke.
“The women’s camp is at the next railroad stop.” Liebgott revealed.
The man walked away wailing, unable to speak anymore.
~~~~~~~
Easy rushes back into the village of Landsberg to gather food and water for the survivors of the camp. Each company raided bakeries, delicatessens, and cheese shops hurrying back to distribute the rations to the prisoners.
When Col Sink arrived with the battlefield surgeon, Winters and Nixon are told they must not continue feeding the survivors. The surgeon claims the survivors' vital systems are unable to handle massive food intake, and they need to be closely monitored during their recovery.
“If we give them too much to eat too quickly, they’ll eat themselves to death. We need to keep them in the camp until we find a place for them in town.” The battlefield surgeon explained to Winters and Nixon.
You walk up to Sink, Winters, and Nixon with a report on the POW’s when you hear:
“You want us to lock these people back up?” Nixon asked in disbelief.
Your eyes widen as your breath catches in your throat.
“We got no choice, Nix.” Sink replied plainly.
“Otherwise they might scatter. we need to keep them centralized so we can supervise their food intake and medical treatment. So, until we find some place better…” the surgeon added.
“It’s a cryin’ ass shame, but let’s get it done.” Sink ordered as he walked away.
“Sir?” You squeak, looking for confirmation on what you just heard.
Winters looks at you with regret. The prisoners were to remain inside the barbed wire fence of the camp to prevent them from potentially spreading diseases…an announcement which Liebgott would be ordered to make.
“Nix, find Liebgott and have him explain to the prisoners what needs to happen-”
“Sir, with all due respect-” you begin to contest.
“Not now, Y/L/N-” Winters replied sternly.
“Sir, you couldn’t make Joe do that. It’ll haunt him for the rest of his-”
“You heard the doctor, Y/F/N. Eating too much could kill them. Go on back and triage as many of the prisoners as you can before they get locked back up.” Nixon pushed back.
You release a breath of defeat, looking over your shoulder to find Joe about ten feet away speaking to another prisoner as Winters and Nixon B lined him to tell him the message that he was to announce.
“I can’t tell ‘em that, sir.”
You run up to the group and stand next to Liebgott.
“You’ve got to, Joe.” Winters replied.
You squeeze Joe’s tricep gently, letting him know you’re behind him.
Joe averted his eyes to the ground, his jaw once again clenching as he internally battled his thoughts and emotions.
“…Yes, sir.” Joe complied under his breath as he turned away from the officers and you to mount the rear of a truck to address the sea of prisoners.
“Aufmerksamkeit! Aufmerksamkeit! (g) (Attention! Attention!)” Liebgott projected over the crowd.
Liebgott reluctantly explained in German to the POW’s what was about to happen. The further along Joe got in his explanation, the more the prisoners contested and weeped. He did his best to provide reassurance that it was in their best interest, promising them it is only temporary and that food, supplies and medicine were coming, but they shook their heads and continued to beg to keep their freedom.
Joe struggled to continue, but he pushed through. His words trailed off when the rest of Easy began ushering the prisoners towards the entrance of the camp. Feeling the most utter sense of shame, Joe hung his head, unable to look at his own people in the eye. He staggered backward onto the bench of the truck, allowing his tears to fall.
~~~~~~~
May 1945
Easy arranged for long term sleeping quarters in the town’s abandoned buildings that were still intact. One evening, you find Joe sitting on a bench at the end of the cobblestone side walk at the edge of Landsberg.
“Hey, Joe.”
He gave you quick side eye, but didn’t say a word. You look at your boots, searching your mind for the right words to say. But you knew better. Nothing you say could help him feel any better. You can see he was stuck in his thoughts about what he just had to do.
You clear your throat, “Winters assigned me to a mission just now.” You began.
Joe remained silent.
“They’re sending me to Dachau until they can get enough female field nurses to tend to the women prisoners over there. They’re terrified of men so they won’t let any of the male medics near them. I don’t know how long I’ll be there.” You elaborated.
Joe lit a cigarette.
“Roe’s going, too.” You add.
Joe scoffed.
“Yeah? Well hope you two have a good time.” He hissed.
You placed a hand over your stilled heart.
“What?” You choked.
“You heard me.” Joe spat back taking another drag from his cigarette.
“Joe, how could say such a thing? I know you’re hurting-”
“You don’t know a goddamn thing!” He barked, “You ain’t even Jewish! How could you know how I feel!? You go around talking the language like you know somethin’ and you think that makes you one of us? You’re a dizzy dame, you know that!?” He proclaimed.
You push down tears, fighting the urge to cry. You take a deep breath.
“Ok, Liebgott,” you begin as you collect yourself, “see you around.” You say as you turn to walk back to your building.
“Yeah, high tail it and run away like the rest of ‘em.” Joe sneered.
You stop abruptly. You wouldn’t allow it. You turn back and stomp back to him.
“You don’t think I understand pain? Or loss? Defeat? Well, I do! Maybe not through your eyes, but I’ve endured my own, Joseph Liebgott. And until now I thought I’ve suffered the worst of them all.”
“Oh yeah? What’s the worst you’re suffering now? Go ahead and enlighten me!” Joe replied viciously as he stood up hovering in your face.
“Heartbreak! Watching the love of my life slip away because he’s completely submerged in hate and anger!”
Joe stared at you in awe, taken back by your response. He grinded his teeth as he flicked his cigarette butt.
“My condolences.” He sneered as he breezed past you leaving you shivering in the dark alone.
Tears cascaded down your cheeks as you sat on the bench Joe had been seated on.
~~~~~~~
June 1945 Thalem, Germany
You remained in Dachau for the duration of May and June with no hope in sight of returning any time soon until the first week or so of July when medical relief finally arrived. Joe had written you a letter the week after you had gone but hadn’t received a response. He had half a mind to go AWOL and hitch a ride to Dachau first chance he got so he could see you again.
Luz, Perconte, Liebgott, Webster, and Randleman sat on the second floor of a bombed out home overseeing the townsfolk in the streets when Nixon joined them. The locals remove the rubble of houses and buildings from the street, as a string quartet plays a somber song in the middle of the square.
"Tell ya one thing about the Krauts, they sure clean up good." Luz expressed.
"Yeah. All you need's a little Mozart." Liebgott added.
"Beethoven." Nixon corrected as he entered onto the landing.
"Sorry, sir?" Liebgott replied.
"That's not Mozart," Nixon repeated as he stood to listen to the melody, "that's Beethoven."
Nixon looked over at Liebgott.
“Any word from Y/L/N?”
Joe shook his head.
“Hm. You sent a letter?”
Joe nodded, “Four pages long.”
“Did you apologize?”
Joe looked at him unamused.
“Yes, sir, I did. Multiple times.” Joe replied dully.
“I see. She’ll come around.” Nixon reassured.
Joe nodded.
“I don’t know, he said some pretty nasty things to her before she left.” Webster declared.
Joe shot him a look of disdain.
“Shut it, Web.” Joe warned.
“He’s right, Lieb.” Bull interjected, “She told me what you said. You’re a goddamn knucklehead, boy.”
Joe released a frustrated sigh.
“Ok, I fucked up! Alright? I was wrong for saying what I said, but you know what? I can’t change that now.” Joe exclaimed as he stood up and began pacing the landing.
“I ain’t gettin’ her back by writing letters.” Joe thought outloud. He looked at Nixon.
“Sir, if I could just get assigned to a detail to Duchau—”Joe began to negotiate.
“You know I can’t do that, Lieb.” Nixon stated before he could finish.
“But, sir—”
“We can’t just send you off to Duchau to play Romeo, Joe, it’s a waste of man power, I’m sorry. You’re also our best German linguist so we can’t be losing another translator since Y/L/N left.”
Joe looked towards the ground deflated.
“Right, sir.” Joe groaned as he slumped onto a chair.
Everyone remained silent for a minute or two before Nixon spoke again.
“Hitler’s dead.”
The boys all looked at him.
“Holy shit.” Joe breathed.
“-Shot himself in Berlin.” Nixon added.
“Is the war over, sir?” Bull asked.
Nixon looked at him, “No. we have orders to Berchtesgaden, be ready to move out by 0700 tomorrow.”
“Why? The man’s not home. Should’ve killed himself three years ago, would’ve saved us a lot of trouble.” Webster said.
Nixon smirked weakly as they all started to exit the landing.
“Yeah, he should’ve,” Nixon concurred, “but he didn’t.”
“Allied forces discovered numerous POW, concentration, and death camps. These camps were part of the Nazi attempt to effect the ‘Final Solution’ to the ‘Jewish Question.” At least five million ethnic minorities and six million Jews were murdered- many of them in the camps.” -BoB close out description on Episode 9- Why We Fight
July 1945
You were finally released to Easy Company at the end of June, and were on your way back to Thalem by the first week of July to link up with them before they left for Austria. The only communication you’ve chosen to have with anyone about your status since you left was Major Winters and Captain Nixon. You transmitted a telegram to Winters from Dachau about your completed mission, and also made it quite clear not to tell any of the guys about you coming back. You didn’t want anyone making a fuss about your return.
The truck you had been on for transport to Thalem came to a sudden stop in the plaza, conveniently where Bull, Luz, and Webster had been hanging out in front of HQ.
“Well look who it is!” Luz whooped.
You smile as you approached the three soldiers.
“Hey, boys! Missed me?” You ask as you approached.
Bull greeted you by giving you a quick bear hug.
“We sure did, girl, good to see ya.” Bull professed as he took your duffel from you.
“We didn’t know if you were ever coming back. When did you find out you were coming?” Webster queried.
“I knew about a week ago.” You confess.
Their eyes widened.
“And…you didn’t say anything to anyone?” Luz asked.
“Just Winters and Nixon.”
“Ah.” Luz confirmed.
The air was thick and awkward.
“What?” You ask.
“Well,” Webster began, “we thought Liebgott would’ve been the first to know.”
You sigh irritably, “I am no longer on speaking terms with Liebgott.”
“He said he wrote you a letter.” Luz affirmed.
“He did. But the damage has been done.” You finalize as you adjust your grip on your other bag.
“Come on, boys, leave it alone. All’s that matters is she’s back.” Bull inserted, “Come on, Y/F/N, I’ll show you where the females be stayin’ at.” Bull offered.
~~~~~~~
“What the fuck did you just say!?” Joe snapped.
Webster’s eyes widened, “Uh, she’s in Thalem. She got here about 20 minutes ago.”
Joe suddenly had a thousand mile stare, looking beyond Webster into the distance out the window as his heart hammered against his rib cage.
“Meine Liebe kehrt zurück. (g) (My love returns).” Joe whispers to himself.
He looked back at Webster and grabbed him by the shoulders, “Where is she?”
“She’s getting cleaned up at nurse’s billetting.” Webster disclosed.
“Why didn’t she tell me she was coming back?” Joe asked out loud as he ran his fingers through his hair.
“I think you know why, Joe.” Bull’s voice rang out as he entered the room.
Joe hurried towards Randleman, “How is she, Bull? Is she ok? Does she look good?” Joe rambled.
Bull chuckled, “She’s just peachy, Joe. Give her some time to get back into the swing of things, though, before you go smothering her, ok? You’ll have plenty of time to talk to her on the way to Austria.”
~~~~~~~
You already picked your seat on the bed of one of the trucks before the rest of Easy showed up. You had your nose in a medical journal, completely absorbed in the chapter when you’re startled by the abrupt collide of someone sitting next to you. You gasp and come face to face with Liebgott. You furrow your eyebrows at him.
“Isn’t there another truck you could’ve picked?” You hiss before turning back to your book.
Joe scoffed, “Nice to see you, too, Gams.”
You huff as you shift your back towards him.
Joe stretched his arms over his head bringing his right one to rest on top of the truck bench behind you. He gazed upon you while you made yourself busy reading your book. He hesitated to speak, hoping you would say something first. He clicked his tongue while his leg bounced with anticipation.
“Why didn’t you write back, Y/F/N?”
You half looked over your shoulder at him annoyed.
“Why do you think?”
“Because I was an idiot.”
“That’s putting it gently.” You retorted.
The rest of the company loaded up and the trucks were on the move.
“So you got my letter?”
“I did.” You replied simply.
“Well, did ya read it?”
“Yes.”
“Gams, you gotta give me somethin’ here, it’s like pullin’ teeth gettin’ answers outta you!” Joe pleaded.
You turn to him, “I don’t owe you anything, Joe Liebgott. Not anymore.” You grit at him.
Joe looked around at the rest of the guys sitting with you on the truck.
“Look, you were right, and I was wrong.” Joe admitted in a hushed voice so the conversation was between you and him.
“Go on.” You urge.
“I am an angry, ornery son of a bitch, and the only time I was happy was when you were around. The day we found that camp—” Joe paused to hold his composure, “—it broke me down…almost to the point of no return. I lost it.” He looked at his boots.
You study him with compassion, your heart simultaneously breaking and melting for him.
“After you left, I became a shell of a man because of everything. I couldn’t shut my eyes without seeing your face or the faces of those prisoners, so I started drinking so I could sleep. Ended up gettin’ into a lot of scraps with Fox and Dog Company. Major Winters talked me into cuttin’ back when he said I’d get court marshaled and sent back to the States without seeing you again.”
He fell silent, afraid to look back at you from shame. You sigh, and take his hand. Joe’s eyes eagerly met yours as his hand squeezed yours.
“This war broke all of us at some point, Joe. Ain’t nothing to be ashamed of. But it’s important you don’t push away the people who care about you most.” You exhibit.
He nodded, “I was so lost without you, Y/F/N.”
He cupped the side of your face with his hand as his thumb gingerly rubbed along your cheek. You put your hand over his, leaning into his touch as a single tear escaped the corner of your eye. Joe bowed forward to rest his forehead against yours, your noses tenderly touching.
“Ikh hab dir lib (y) (I love you).” He breathed tilting his head forward until his lips brushed against yours.
Your lips gently lock onto his, each of you inhaling eachother’s breaths. You pull back to look into his honeyed brown eyes.
“I will never disrespect you again.” Joe vowed quietly.
You fall into him as he embraces you. His heartbeat drumming in your ear while your face presses into his chest.
“I love you, Joe.” You reciprocate.
“Ok, you two, you kissed and made up. Can we dispense with the sappy stuff now?” Luz complained.
You giggled as you pull back from Joe’s arms.
“Hey, Y/L/N, you owe us a song!” Luz pointed out.
“Hm, I suppose I do. Any suggestions?”
“I don’t know, surprise us, don’t make me think no more, we just need something nice to hear.” Luz rattled off.
You take a moment to think, until inspiration struck you. The boys wait with anticipation all over their faces, waiting for you to start. You look around the truck, smiling mischievously. You take a deep breath…
youtube
🎶“It had to be you, it had to be you.
I wandered around, finally found , the somebody who,
Could make me be true, Could make me be blue—”🎶
The boys leaned in, already entranced by your soothing voice, relishing the classic you selected. You stood so they could all see you, slipping your hand into Joe’s as you continued to perform.
You glance at Joe and wink, “Das ist für dich (g) (This is for you).” You whisper real quick before the next verse.
🎶“For nobody else gave me a thrill,
With all your faults, I love you still,
It had to be you, Wonderful you,
It had to be you— *GASP!*—”🎶
The truck violently quaked as it hit a pothole in the road, throwing you off balance causing you to stagger forward. Joe once again swooping in, hooking his arm around your hips in front of you before you could fall to the floor. The guys whooped and hollered with laughter and applause.
“Now where have I seen this happen before?” Luz questioned sarcastically rubbing his chin.
You return a hearty laugh and sit back on the bench next to Liebgott.
Joe angled in close to your ear, “Told ya I’d always be there to save you.”
You meet his stare with a smirk as he winks back at you.
~~~~~~~
Berchtesgaden
You arrive in Austria and take Eagle's Nest with no resistance. All you find are dead German officers and a considerable amount of war loot. After the men seized Hitler’s private fortress and officer housing surrounding it, Winters announced the war's conclusion in Europe and you were all directed to remain in place until you had to move on.
The guys wasted no time raiding the fully stocked wine cellar, popping open champagne and brandy, drinking from the bottles before claiming a space in any of the empty chambers of the castle and officer’s housing.
As evening approached, Easy lounged around the common room in front of a roaring fire in the massive fireplace, each with their own bottle of wine smoking and joking about anything and everything.
“I suppose you’ll be staying with Y/F/N?” Luz asked Liebgott.
“You bet your ass I am.” Liebgott confirmed.
“Yeah? Well, here’s a couple of extra bottles for ya to bring to the room.” Malarkey hinted with a wink passing Joe two unopened bottles of Cognac.
Joe smirked roguishly at Don, “Ya think I need liquid courage, Malark?”
Don chuckled, “Nah, just settin’ you up for success for the rest of the night.”
“Yeah, you better go to her before she falls asleep, pal!” Perconte teased.
Joe’s smile widened as he pointed at Frank, hastily standing up to rush towards the grand staircase.
“Go get ‘er, Lieb!” A couple of the guys shouted after him as the rest cheered him on.
~~~~~~~
You found a sleeping chamber with a balcony and one hell of a view of the mountains. You lean on the wall of the stone terrace, amiably staring at the warm hues of the sky as the sun set sun set beyond the blue, snow capped Alps with the lake glistening and sparkling below.
Joe meandered into the bedroom and quietly ambled onto balcony. He set the bottles down, sneaking up behind you wrapping his arms around your waist from behind, pulling you against him.
“Joe! You startled me!” You feign as you hold his hands in front of you.
Joe nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck, inhaling the scent of vanilla and lavender on your hair.
“You smell incredible, doll.”
You rest your cheek on the side of his head.
“Why thank you, Mr. Liebgott.”
Joe took you by the shoulders to turn you towards him. He affectionately kneaded your arms as he beamed at you.
“You owe me a dance.” he declared.
You tilt your head at him, “You know what? You’re absolutely right.”
You ardently look back into the room.
“Hold that thought.” you prompt him.
You hurry back into the room to the gramophone that sat in the corner of the room. You finger through the record collection and find a song you were familiar with, and prepare it on the turntable. You crank the handle and gently place the needle on the record until the sound of “Sleepy Serenade” by The Andrew Sisters materialized through the horn.
youtube
You turn to see Joe’s reaction.
“Guess the Krauts appreciated The Andrew Sisters, too, huh?” He quipped.
“I suppose so.” You snickered.
Joe’s eyes seductively looked you over from head to toe, then casually beckoned you over to him.
“Don’t keep me waiting, Gams.” He hummed flirtatiously.
You sashay over to him as Joe offered his hand. When you were close enough, you place your hand on his to which he grasps it tenderly and proceeds to twirl you around then gracefully pulls you into him, holding you tight and flush against him by the waist as you sway dreamily together to the angelic melody.
Joe led you through the threshold of the balcony and around the room until you feel the back of your knees bump into the edge of the bed. Joe held you steady gaping into your eyes as he brought his hand up between you to caress your cheek. You lull your head onto his palm, your heart beat drumming.
“Marry me.” Joe purred.
Your mouth collapsed from shock, “You mean it, Joe?”
Joe rest his forehead on yours, “Absolutely. I don’t want to spend one second apart from you ever again.”
Your lips collide, locking onto each other in a deep lustful make out. Joe pulled away.
“So, is that a yes?” He said through his signature grin.
“Yes.” You moan into his mouth as you pull him back onto the bed with you.
~~~~~~~
You consummate your engagement with a night of pure, passionate love making. A heated, desirous adventure neither of have ever experienced before. Your souls became one that night in Berchtesgaden, never once to be separated or without the other ever again.

THURSDAY HERO: Tadeusz Pankiewicz
Tadeusz Pankiewicz was a Polish pharmacist who helped the starving, suffering Jewish residents of the Krakow ghetto by providing them with medicine, food, and other lifesaving supplies.
Born in Sambor, Poland in 1908, Tadeusz studied at the prestigious Jagiellonian University in Krakow. In 1933 he took over the family business: a small pharmacy called Under the Eagle. Germany invaded Poland in 1939, but Tadeusz’s quiet life and successful small business were mostly unaffected, until 1941, when the Nazis forced the city’s 15,000 Jews into a ghetto.
Tadeusz’s pharmacy happened to be within the ghetto’s borders. The Nazis shut down other businesses and essential services in the ghetto to make it impossible for Jews to get food and other necessities, but Tadeusz refused to close his store. He bribed the Gestapo, using his own savings, to keep Under the Eagle open. Tadeusz was inspired by his Catholic faith to stay and help people however he could.
Conditions in the ghetto were horrific. There was never enough food, and every day residents died of starvation or illness; others were shot in the street by Nazi soldiers. Medicine of any kind was almost impossible to obtain, except from Tadeusz, who provided health care and pharmaceuticals for free to residents of the ghetto. He also provided them with lifesaving products such as hair dye to disguise their identity and tranquilizers to keep children quiet during Gestapo raids.
Tadeusz’s pharmacy became the go-to place for Jews to meet, plan underground activities and acts of defiance, and get lifesaving care and equipment. Tadeusz and his pharmacy employees Irena Drozdzikowska, Helena Krywaniuk, and Aurelia Danek put their lives at significant risk to help the Jews of the Krakow ghetto. Besides medicine, supplies and a safe place to meet, the brave pharmacist and his staff shared their meager wartime food rations, and hid Jews on the property during deportations. They were able to smuggle some Jews out of the ghetto and take them to hiding places where they would be safe.
Tadeusz actually befriended German soldiers to get information from them! He got them drunk and cleverly manipulated them into telling him about planned actions against Jews so he could warn them. Another service Tadeusz to the Jews trapped in the ghetto was acting as intermediary between them and the Poles with whom they left their valuables.
Among the people who met in secret in the pharmacy were prominent figures such as writer Mordechai Gebirtig and artist Abraham Neumann, who were tragically shot by the Germans in the ghetto in the infamous Bloody Thursday of June 4, 1942. Julian Aleksandrowicz survived the war to become a doctor and medical professor who specialized in the treatment of leukemia. Dr Abraham Mirowski, another Jew saved by Tadeuszm later said that the kind pharmacist was “living among us, was continuously exposed to dangers, but it did not make him scared. He was full of sympathy for our tragedy and wanted to help us with all his heart. Each death of a man or a woman was a traumatic experience for him.”
After the war, Tadeusz stayed in Krakow and, in 1947, he published his memoirs of life under German occupation. He continued working as a pharmacist. In 1957, some of the Jews he’d saved brought him for a visit to Israel as their guest. Tadeusz was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 1983.
Tadeusz Pankiewicz died in Krakow in 1993. His pharmacy is now a museum about the history of the Jews of Krakow, with special focus on the ghetto years. Tadeusz and his brave staff are also a featured museum exhibit.
For helping Jews in the Krakow ghetto, we honor Tadeusz Pankiewicz as this week’s Thursday Hero.
