Amazing! The first kei car with gull-wing doors and a midship layout!
Intimidate everyone else!!
AUTOZAM AZ-1
Shut up and follow me!!
Following the Beat and Cappuccino, Autozam has released its 3rd light car! The AZ-1 (Autozam's top pick!) is an evolved version of the AZ-550 that appeared at the Autozam show three years ago. What's more, the AZ-1's top pick is that it's the first gull-wing light car in the history of the car. The drive system is also midship, just like the Beat, so you can expect great driving performance! This is the kind of car it is.
This is what the AZ-1 is like!!!
The AZ-1 was born from the idea of play.
It all began three years ago when Mazda's development staff created the AZ 550 (there were three types, A, B, and C), which they had been playing around with in their spare time from their regular work, and exhibited it as a concept car at a motor show.
The reactions of visitors to the motor show were surveyed. Many people said they "definitely want to buy it," "want it," and "want to drive it," so the upper echelons of the manufacturer began to think seriously about the matter. They then had automotive critics test drive the car and sought a wide range of opinions.
As a result, the "go" was given and full-scale development for commercialization began.
Naturally, the overall body length and engine displacement were also revised.
The distinctive gull-wing doors (named for the way they open, resembling the movement of a seagull's wings) are the second to be adopted by a Japanese car, following the Toyota Sera. However, this car is more authentic.
The engine is a 3-cylinder twin-cam turbo purchased from Suzuki, the same as the Cappuccino. This is the birth of a mid-ship car, following the first in the kei car series. The plastic body is bolted together, so the frame of the chassis is not visible from the outside, allowing for a large number of welds and ensuring considerable body rigidity. The body is available in two colors: red and blue.
PIC CAPTIONS
AZ-1 5MT 1,498,000 yen
◆The authentic bucket-type seat provides firm support for the driver's body.
★The small 35cm diameter handlebars are one feature that will inspire your sporty spirit.
This is what it looks like from the outside!!!
The Gullwings and Midship layout are lightweight and futuristic in shape.
Although it is basically the same as the model exhibited at the motor show, you will notice that some small changes have been made for the market. The first thing that catches your eye are the headlights. The retractable lamps have been changed to two exposed round lamps. However, they are angled to blend in as much as possible with the steeply sloping hood, and are a modified oval type.
Because of the gull-wing design, the outer door handles and door locks are positioned low, which is a bit of a concern as they get muddy easily on rainy days or after driving through muddy roads. The side air intakes behind the doors are a sign of a midship design and look cool. Air is introduced through the intake duct to cool the engine.
The single wiper type gives a sporty impression, but since it does not have any mechanism to expand the operating area like Mercedes Benz's, it may be slightly less practical than the dual wiper type.
There is also an air intake on the hood, but please be aware that this is not for the turbo intercooler. It is actually just an air intake for the interior. The door mirrors are also taken from the Carol.
The interior looks like this!!!!!!
The mysterious living space created by the gullwing!!!
The threshold is twice as high as that of the Cappuccino, so getting in and out of the car is not smooth. The threshold is higher than the seat, so it is impossible (not physically, but psychologically) for a woman wearing a skirt to get in. That being said, this is an exception to the rule for women who want to please men.
The interior has a narrow center tunnel that separates the driver and passenger, like the Cappuccino and Beat, and the driver and passenger seats are very close to each other. The inside door handles are the same as those of the Eunos Roadster.
The steering wheel is sporty with a small diameter of 35cm. The controls for the standard air conditioner are located on the center console due to space limitations, but the dial-type main switch (which also serves as the fan switch) has the numbers indicating the air volume facing downwards, making it difficult to see.
The seats are bucket type. The driver's seat slides but has no reclining (angle adjustment).
There are no adjustment mechanisms in the passenger seat.
The seats are fixed, with no room for movement. A heavy spare tire is placed behind the driver's seat to improve cornering performance. There is plenty of headroom.
The gear shift lever is less appealing than that of the Beat and Cappuccino, as it feels more tacky. Also, there are no power windows to keep the vehicle weight down.
PIC CAPTIONS
★The AZ-550 was released three years ago. The only changes from the AZ-1 are the retractable headlamps and aluminum.
★The AZ-1's side air intakes are proof that it is a mid-engine car.
★A gorgeous figure!
AZ-1when opened. This is the gullwing.
◆The most distinctive feature of the AZ-1 is its gull-wing doors that look as if they could pop out at any moment.
↑Seen from the front, the gull-wing doors look somewhat threatening...
→Is it just me or does it look like a goldfish? →AZ-1 seen from directly above looks like
◆The rear view has four round lamps. The engine is mounted behind the seats.
◆The short, easy-to-operate gear lever is very sporty.
◆The seats are also full-fledged bucket type, designed with sporty driving in mind.
★It is the smallest and sportiest steering wheel on a commercially available vehicle.
★This air conditioning control switch is vertical and has an unusual shape that has never been seen before.
Introducing the Autozam AZ-1, the first gull-wing light car!
Here's the mechanism of AZ-1!!
It's a sporty mechanism that goes beyond being a lightweight car.
Both the front and rear use strut suspension, and the brakes are four-wheel discs, exactly the same as the Beat. The AZ-1 is 25mm lower than the Beat, and its wheelbase is 45mm shorter, so its cornering performance has reached a considerable level.
The tires are the same size on both the front and rear, and are specially designed TOYO Trampio 155/65R13 inch. Aluminum wheels, which can reduce the weight by 2 kg per wheel, are available as custom-made equipment.
The body is a skeleton monocoque.
The structure is called a "shell," and the plastic outer panels are bolted together, which has the advantage that the welds are not visible from the outside, and the number of spot welds has been increased to increase rigidity.
PIC CAPTIONS
▶AZ-1's rivals
▼SUZUKI cappuccino
▲HONDA beat
If you were to compare it simply in terms of power performance, the Cappuccino would be its rival (which can't be helped, since they have the same engine), but if you were to compare it in terms of drive system, the Beat would be its rival. It is the only one that is not an open-top car compared to the other two, but it can be said to have both the acceleration of the Cappuccino and the midship of the Beat. In other words, since all three cars are different, it is difficult to compare them as equal rivals. The only choice you can make is based on these three factors - gullwing, midship, FR - and your budget.
■This is the AZ-1 chassis (framework) and suspension!!!
◆The suspension is equipped with disc brakes and strut suspension.
The body uses the latest skeleton monocoque.

Autozam AZ-1 "F40," 2024, by Liberty Walk. For this year's Tokyo Auto Salon the Japanese Tuner have revealed a bodykit for the Mazda/Autozam AZ-1 that takes inspiration from the Ferrari F40. The kit costs $22,660, and the wheels are an additional $14,300 and of course you need an AZ-1 donor car.

Mazda Autozam AZ-1 review.
Super light car No.3!!
Autozam
AZ-1 Test Drive
How amazing is the power performance? The third light sports car, AZ-1 has been released by Autozam.
This is the only supercar this small in the world!
●This is a car●
A minicar in the shape of a supercar
The Autozam AZ-1 is a new wave of light sports car, with a combination of gull-wing doors and a midship design reminiscent of a Lamborghini.
The AZ-1 is a car that looks like a cross between two cars, with the midship layout of the Honda Beat and the engine of the Suzuki Cappuccino, which was released earlier, and the first impression is, "Wow, that's pretty impressive." The short overall length makes it look cramped, but the wide and low design eliminates that feeling, and the two-eyed, irregular headlamps protruding from the boldly sloping hood add a warmth to the pointed silhouette.
It really stands out. It's been a long time since I've had a car that attracted so many curious looks during a test drive.
PIC CAPTIONS
^It is a sporty car with a steering wheel diameter of 35 cm.
^The seat is quite firm and keeps the driver firmly in place.
●Equipment usability●
Getting in and out of the car is the worst.
It's a cool style, but I'm fed up with how difficult it is to get in and out of. The side sills of the doors are high, so you have to think about how to move your feet before you can sit down on the seat. If you're not careful, your right foot will hit the right edge of the meter hood. Also, you can't get out of the car properly unless you put your right hand on the side sill and brace yourself. Well, I guess it's a ritual.
The equipment is very simple, perhaps to reduce weight and costs.
PIC CAPTION
Although it is a light car, the AZ-1 has the shape of a supercar!!
All the equipment related to the IO was made to order, and there were no "power" or other electric devices. Well, a midship kei car doesn't need power steering, and the ticket window that opens fully with one turn is enough.
There is barely any space to store luggage - a great compromise, but needless to say, inconvenient.
PIC CAPTIONS
↑Getting in and out of the car is a bit of a challenge, but you have to accept that since it's a supercar.
↑The side air intakes on the sides of the car are proof that it is a midship car.
^A ticket window where you can only stick your arm out.
●This is how it works!!!●
The good suspension makes driving on curves fun.
It's leaning too far to the left when receiving it. I don't like it, even if it's due to size restrictions.
Turn the key to wake up the F6A type DOHC intercooler turbo engine in the back. The high-pitched engine sound that is unique to light vehicles is loud and clear. However, when you step on the gas, you hear a high-pitched "Hiiiii" sound.
After completing the ritual of sliding into the seat, I took the driving position. However, the driver's seat of the AZ-1 only has a forward and backward sliding mechanism.
Of course, there is no space to recline the seat, so I have no complaints. In fact, the seat fits my slightly overweight frame perfectly. It is firm enough to feel a slight cushioning, which is perfect.
When viewed from the side, the windshield and bonnet look like one unit, giving the illusion of a protruding forward view. It feels a bit like a racer. If I had to mention one negative point, I wish they would do something about the inconvenience of adjusting the left door mirror. Also, the accelerator pedal is too loose to prevent interference with the right front wheel.
PIC CAPTION
↑The midship-mounted engine is inherited from the Cappuccino and produces a maximum output of 64 horsepower.
When you hear the "boom" sound of the turbocharging, you think "ok, the turbo is working," and you step on the accelerator to accelerate.
With a snappy shift into first gear, I engage the clutch and set off. I pull the F6A up to 8000 rpm and then shift up. It reaches 40km/h in first gear and 70km/h in second gear. It's 20kg heavier than the Cappuccino with the same engine, so the push from behind is weaker, but it's still plenty fast. At 100km/h in fifth gear, the tachometer hits just under 4500 rpm. You can really feel the "Eeek."
I'm happy that it continues to accelerate energetically from here.
The two-turn steering seems to encourage the driver to take quick turns, and requires a certain degree of delicacy when going straight at high speeds. However, if you apply a firm grip on the steering wheel and a strong brake, the car will perform an agile turn.
The stiff suspension and rigid body of the car provide peace of mind as they firmly absorb the car's twists and bounces.
PIC CAPTION
Use tire size 155/65R13.
●This is your rival!!!●
It's a showdown between Open and Gullwing!!!!
The Beat and Cappuccino, which were released last year, have plenty of power and an open body, making them cars that are fun to drive. The rivals of the AZ-1 emphasize the feeling of openness, but the AZ-1 has a gull-wing door. The temptation of an open door is great, but the AZ-1 is attracting more attention than it can get without compromising practicality
The Cappuccino is probably its biggest rival.
Summary●
If it looks cool, then everything is good!!!!
The body's inconvenient usability is understandable if you consider that this is the price to pay for the attractive styling and quick driving. I would like to applaud Mazda for their decision to take on such risky ideas as an all-plastic body, a midship engine layout, and gull-wing doors.
With the arrival of the AZ-1, light sports have become even more interesting.
↑The third super light car is the AZ-I.

might be a bit of a boring question but how do you feel about the Mazda b series? and if you have nothing to say about that one then I'd love to hear your thoughts on the tacoma
So thoughtful of you to give me a backup question, but worry not! If I've got nothing to say about a car, I will find it, goddamnit, if it'll take me two months! Which it very nearly did. Sorry. Anyhow! In reverse order of generations:
1. 5th
Tumblr media
it would take state-backed effort to get me to care for -hell, care about- this last one, which did not excel in looks nor performance nor, from what I can tell, reliability nor comfort. It feels like it would be a very complex thought experiment to come up with the buyer this would be the best choice for, even in its time. (However, while the enthusiasts' metric of evaluation is competition, the owners' metric is their own expectations, so it is certain and valid and good that millions of owners were chuffed about their purchase and I love that for them and do not whatsoever seek to rain on their parade.)
2. 4th
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neat! Even beyond the spectacular decals, I just love Japanese pickups of this era (the ones yankees call "small pickups" and we call "pickups" because we don't have those useless fuck-off-gargantuan shit yankees love to pretend has any use). So much so that I want two of them. Neither are this (they're the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan D21), but objectively they're all about the same and my preferences are purely based on aesthetic minutiae.
3. 3rd
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First I see of it! The front is kind of unfortunate, but it reminds me of the Yugo so it's on my good side. The rear taillights also have a kind of Soviet quality to them, I'm sure there's some -az car with rear lights just like those.
4. 2nd
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HELL FUCKING YEAH *checks pronouns* SISTER! I love this thing. Especially the REPU, where PU stands for Pick Up and RE stands for...
Tumblr media
Yep :D, this was the time when Mazda was shoving rotaries left and right into applications they were comically unsuited for absolutely no discernible reason, and we're all glad that they did, because Lord knows no one else had the lack of sense to do it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes the ROTARY POWER* on the back of it is factory! *BITCHES
5. 1st
Tumblr media
Yeah, this is at the edge of car period that excites me. Not that I think it looks bad or is bad or anything, it just starts to feel too... historic for me to connect to? I guess a Mazda pickup from the early '60s is just not for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems I guessed wrong.
This Ghibli-esque little thing is the 1959 Mazda K360, being a kei truck with the then maximum of 360cc of engine. It was a popular taxi (taxi!) in Myanmar...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...where it kept being produced until the early '70s, when it got replaced by the other other truck Mazda was making by the early '60s, the B360.
Tumblr media
Wow I really was wrong there huh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These were probably a sort of "Eastern Europe getting Fiat's scraps" kind of deal, since while these were manufactured in Myanmar from '72 to the mid-90s (mid-90s!), by 1972 Japan had already long been getting the B360's replacement i.e. the Mazda Porter, which OOOO0000°°°°°ººººº⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰ my GOOOOOODDDD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMGOMGOMG THIS IS THE CUTEST THING IN THE WORLD
Tumblr media
I don't even want to own one of these, I want to cuddle it. I want to protect it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMG THIS ONE HAS TINY LITTLE HAYASHIS WITH TINY LITTLE LETTERING ON ITS TINY LITTLE TIRES
Tumblr media
*faints* *a feeble, wiggly speech bubble appears from below the table* Tacoma's good btw. Best of segment by miles.
