📸 ATP official website
Also closing the day in the Astana Challenger was the doubles quarterfinals match between first seeds Daniel Cukierman/Neil Oberleitner, who advanced after wild cards' Amir Omarkhanov/Yerassyl Yerdilda's withdrawal from the first round, and Ivan Denisov/Saba Purtseladze, who earlier defeated alternates Leonid Sheyngezikht/Maxim Zhukov 6-3, 1-6, [10-5] in a chaotic match. This match turned out to deliver in one way or another at its start, but the more consistent pair in range could prevail in this match.
Parts of the first set turned out to be marked by some neat net exchanges, one of those caused I. Denisov's forehand error for Cukierman/Oberleitner to minimize the gap even if the former pair held their serves to 2-1. The first seeds then survived a backhand return ace from I. Denisov three points into the seventh game before they held to 4-3, and they tried to assert more pressure as Cukierman's failed volley brought them the equalizer (four points in) even though I. Denisov/S. Purtseladze held their serves to 5-4.
It did not end just there yet as I. Denisov tried to end the point down the line, but it went too long as Cukierman/Oberleitner minimized the gap again, but the former held to 6-5, and it did not take a long time before the tie-breaker became inevitable. There, I. Denisov's perfect backhand finish secured his and S. Purtseladze's service game hold to 2-2 before Cukierman's forehand return ace secured the first seeds' mini-break to 3-2. To continue, they consolidated to 4-2 thanks to Oberleitner's smashes even if S. Purtseladze randomly pulled a tweener in the rally. Subsequently, a forehand error from S. Purtseladze scored the set point for Cukierman/Oberleitner, which was immediately converted due to his double fault, thus the first seeds took the first set 7-6(2) to put themselves on the right foot in this match.

Säkkijärven Polkka: Defusing a mine with a radio!
It's September 1941. The Finnish are in their Continuation War against Soviet forces. The town of Viipuri has just been recaptured by the Finnish forces. However, the Finnish find out that the Soviets left a deadly secret for them. Radio-controlled mines were scattered around the city. These mines blew up when a 3- note chord was played on the same frequency (715 kHz) the mine was tuned to, causing three tuning forks to vibrate simultaneously. And each mine had unique combinations.
But the Army and Yleisradio (Finnish broadcasting company) were able to find out how the mines worked. If they played a tune fast enough, it would effectively jam the radio mines, preventing them from blowing people to smithereens. They would also need said tune to have tons of chords (Darn you, 2 chord only songs!), in order for it to keep with the unique tuning fork combinations.
There was a song named the Sakkijarven polkka. Its chords definitely had variation, and it played fast. So the Finnish used this amazing song... and it actually worked! The radio mines were being jammed, saving many people from getting blown up.
Small twist: The Soviets found out. The Soviets simply changed the radio frequencies for the mines, but good for the Finnish, not the mines themselves. The Finnish simply blasted the song at every frequency the mines could work on. Thus thwarting the Soviet forces.
The Finnish played the Sakkijarven polkka from September 1941 to February 2 1942, until they brought in "proper" mine jamming equipment. The song was played for 5 months, until the radio mines' batteries were sure to be empty.
All in all out of thousand mines, only 12 went off. The Finnish played the song for about 1500 times. If you want to hear the song, click here.
The Finnish went on to go to peace with the Soviets, but really, the war was more devastating on the Red Army. The Finnish had casualties of 25,000, but the Russians had a bigger toll of 80,000. The Russians thought the Finnish would be a pushover. But Chief marshal of the Branch Zhukov actually led the Soviet Forces into a big massacre. If the soldiers deserted, they would be punished severely. If they got captured, Soviet propaganda said that the Finnish did a lot of evil things to captives (Such as, "They'll cook you and eat you"), which was just a big lie.
So yeah, that's how the Finnish stopped the radio mines of Viipuri with a radio. The Finnish were also awesome, with their legendary sniper "Simo Hayha". But that's another topic.
See ya later!
