Gender autonomy, and how I internalise maverinity and maveriquinity
[PT: Gender autonomy and how I internalise maverinity and maveriquinity/]
Defining gender autonomy
[PT: defining gender autonomy/]
As defined by its coiner, gender autonomy, also known as iquinity or autonominity, refers to a sense of gender that's characterised by self-determination, a sense of independence from outside governance and influence, and freedom regarding one's actions, wills or desires.
Autonominity can also be attached to pre-existing heteronomous gender qualities to resignify, to do "individualistic redefinitions" of those.
For example, neutrinity/neutrality is a heteronomous quality, but if we add gender autonomy to the combo, if we add a sense of self-determination, independence from structures and freedom and if we detach it from stereotypes and expectations; we end up with something that is simultaneously neutrine/neutral and autonomous, something that's neutriquine.
The same can potentially happen with any gender quality. Any heteronomous quality can be resignified onto their autonomous counterpart.
The intersection between autonominity and itherinities
[PT: The intersection between autonominity and itherinities/]
These redefinitions have been extended to brand new qualities, unrelated to pre-existing ones too, even though by the simple concept of being unrelated to any pre-existing major gender concept, these qualities are technically autonomous by default.
But I'm not against these gender terms being coined, in fact I've coined some myself. I just see them different from things like "angique" or "epicenique"; while adding iquinity to androgyny and epicenity redefines/resignified them, adding iquinity to perainity, ilyaginity, etc, rather than redefine them, emphasises the autonomous aspect that they already have due to the simple rack of being itherine (brand new and unrelated to pre-existing qualities) qualities, over all the other aspects that each of them may have.
All this applies to maverinities vs maveriquinities [PT: all this applies to maverinities and maveriquinities/]
At least with the way I internalise them...
Maverine vs Maveriquine vs Maveriqueerine
[PT: Maverine vs Maveriquine vs Maveriqueerine/]
As an itherine quality, maverinity has three main traits:
- Gender autonomy, which I've already explained above;
- A strong sense of gender, meaning that Maverine genders aren't neutral, apathetic nor genderless. Nor are they beyond the concept of gender, thus they aren't yonderine either;
- Gender unorthodoxy. Uniqueness, unconventionality, non-conformity, subversion
Maveriquinities, like maverique (the one that gave the quality the name) are maverinities that focus more on gender autonomy than on gender unorthodoxy (sometimes even completely omitting the latter. — although it was in the original definition of maverique, for example)
But just like we have Maverine genders that are primarily autonomous (and may or may not mention gender unorthodoxy), there's a group of Maverine genders, like "gendermaverick" or "maverqueer", that focus more on gender unorthodoxy than on gender autonomy, having an inherent sense of genderfuckery and queerness to them, respectively. I like to call this second type of Maverine genders, maveriqueerinities (Maveriqueerine) or veriqueerinities (veriqueerine); genders for which gender unorthodoxy may not only present itself as an innate state, but as a conscious and active decision to challenge gender norms and structures.

Transmaveresque: Transitioning to or having a connection to maveresquinity (related to the gender of maveresque.) This could mean a trans identity aligned with maverinity, connected to proxverity, or related to maveriquinity in some way. It is a trans identity with a maverine-like or maverique-like quality.
I made a few flags for this and I'm in love with the colors! Red, oranges, browns... Very gendermaverick. - 💙💚

it's trans+ history week, so i finally have an opportunity to make a detailed post about maverique history.
so here it is:
a detailed timeline of maverique history.
31/05/2014 — @queerascat coined maverique as "a non-binary gender characterized by an unconventional and unothodox internal sense of self and the interrelationship between that sense of self and society"
15/06/2014 — queerascat reworded the definition as: "a non-binary gender characterized by autonomy and inner conviction regarding a sense of gender which is unorthodox, unconventional and entirely independent of conventional concepts of gender". they created the maverique flag on the same day.
18/06/2014 — tearun suggested maver as an equivalent to man/woman and rique as an equivalent for boy/girl, the latter was never heard of again due to it sounding like "reek"
19/06/2014 — someone suggested mav as an equivalent to boy/girl, @whatdoesenbymean suggested Mv (pronounced "mav") as a title
21/06/2014 — after some confusion, queerascat reworded the definition one last time as "a gender characterized by autonomy and inner conviction regarding a sense of self that is entirely independent of male/masculinity, female/femininity or anything which derives from the two while still being neither without gender nor of a neutral gender"
22/06/2014 — the @maveriques blog was created
24/06/2014 — maveriques posted a CMYK analogy to explain maverique
28/06/2014 — maveriques posted a list of proposed maverique terms
29/06/2014 — someone suggested Mv (pronounced "miv") as a title
06/07/2014 — queerascat uploaded a video about their label change and the term maverique in their youtube channel
12/03/2015 — maveriques clearly defined maverique as not an umbrella term
11/10/2015 — queerascat posted a gender tag video from a maverique perspective on their youtube channel
13/10/2015 — someone suggested maveriquine as an equivalent for masculine/feminine
~2015/16 — there was discourse on aliagender and aporagender being racist, and that maverique was a good term to use instead because it was coined by a Black person, queerascat pushed back against this
31/07/2016 — maverine was suggested as an equivalent to masculine/feminine
18/11/2016 — @moonstruck-melts suggested the earth and sun symbols for maverique, and @feekins suggested pluto as a symbol
03/02/2017 — @the-christian-closet suggested the comet symbol for maverique, mistaking it for an alternative sun symbol
05/02/2017 — maveriques posted a poll asking how people feel about the sun as a maverique symbol
12/02/2017 — maveriques posted the results, with most maveriques liking it but having reservations
24/02/2017 — courage-archive-deactivated2018 / sneer posted the symbol with the two extending arms
17/07/2017 — veriquinity was suggested as an equivalent to masculine/feminine
~2021: the maverique subreddit was created
06/01/2022 — renée yoxon went on the fifty shades of gender podcast to talk about being maverique, trans, nonbinary and genderqueer
06/2022 — reddit user ChaoticStrange suggested a maverique visibility day on 31/05 and others agreed
16/01/2023 — renée yoxon briefly spoke about being maverique on the gender reveal podcast
18/06/2023 — @themaveriqueagenda on tumblr was born
20/08/2023 — themaveriqueagenda on instagram was born

What is Maverine?
Maverine (also called verine) is a gender quality typically connected to maverique, a gender that is outside of masculine, feminine, male, female, and neutral while having a distinct gendered feeling. As such, its maverine quality exists outside of masculine, feminine, neutral, and null - this is known as outherine. Maverinity is tied to personal inner conviction of gender and is therefore autonomous.
Maverine falls under the qualities of outherine, itherine, aporine, and abinarine, but it does not fall under xenity. It is maverine-in-nature, or MVIN/mvingender.
Maverine is, by definition, both autonomous (AUIN) and outherine (OUIN) at the same time, and lacks gender apathy.
Maverine is not a gender quality that is unorthodox by choice (which is why the main maverine gender - maverique - is “maverick-like”, a key distinction that differentiates it from the more voluntary gendermaverick identity.) Therefore, it is not related to being genderqueer or genderpunk.
(All of the above links redirect to the YB3 Wiki.)
Why "Maverinities"?
Taking inspiration from @/theoutherlings, a blog that discusses outherinities, I find it valuable to talk about maverinities in the plural. Maverinities make up a galaxy of individual maverine experiences as well as neighboring ones. Maveriquinities are qualities and genders specific to the maverique experience. My goal is to pull the focus away from maverinity as THE quality of maverique and delve into the complexities of maverinity on its own. But maverique is not forgotten here!

I plan on coining some terms and talking about maverinity outside of maveriqueness. It seems silly to have a gender quality only tied to one gender, so I want to expand on the idea of maverinity. I wonder, though, how I would differentiate it from autonine as a gender quality. Is the distinction its genderedness (allogenderedness) and its placement outside of conventionality? I imagine autonomous genders can range from masculine to feminine to neutral to xenine whereas maverinity feels like it should be distinguished as being outside of those concepts. It could be the autonomous version of something like ilyagine or outherine. Something like that.
I think this would help out a lot, to see a more complex view of maverinity. I just want to make sure I get it right. Sometimes I get mixed up and I accidentally misrepresent a label because I got the definition wrong. I don't want to do that.
Any suggestions would be fantastic. I'd love to see what kinds of concepts maverinity can encompass outside of maveriquinity (and having the two finally be distinct from one another would be great.)
Maverinity could encompass so many things because it's not just the gender quality for maverique, but for a number of autonomous gender experiences. I think I would like to start focusing on this concept of autonomy beyond maveriqueness to highlight that maverinity is more than just that one auingender. Maverinities. Many ways to have an autonomous gender experience that have never been explained before. I want to talk about my maverine male experience, about being transmaverine, about tangential maverinities. There's so much to talk about even within such a complex and rarely seen topic.

What does menaverique mean? and how can I tell if it fits me?
Menaverique: a gender that is female but in an entirely maverique way
There's also this one, based on finverique:
Fiaverique or feinverique: a multi-gender identity that consists of two or more parts, (depending on the person) feingender/fiaspec and maverique.
If you feel you experience a gender that is both woman/wifgender and maverique, then it can be either menaverique or fiaverique. While fiaverique is multigender, one can be menaverique and monogender (experiencing only one gender). If you feel maverique in a female way or female in a maveriquine way, then it can be menaverique.
It's totally subjective and up to you to determine what you experience as gender identity. If you feel it vibes with you, then use it. But if you feel better just using maverique, for example, just use maverique.

I stumbled across the term Maverique a few days ago. Before I went w/ the gender I was assigned at birth (cuz ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), but the definition just "clicked". After reading more about it I'm not sure if I can ID that way tho, cuz while I don't feel genderless, or like a man/woman, I do feel kinda "feminine", but it's not like """"feminine"""", you know? It's really "me"/innate & unrelated to things outside myself, but feminine as a word still fits, just the concept of feminine is my own. Thoughts?
sorry for the slow reply, anon.
i’m sorry that my definition of maverique being what it is has caused you to question whether you can identify as maverique or not. my personal stance is that if you feel like ‘maverique’ describes you then it does, even if ‘feminine’ also happens to describe you as well. i’m the last person to say that someone “can” or “can’t” identify as something that feels right to them. by all means, if it feels fitting to you to do so, please do adopt ‘maverique’ for yourself.
on a side note, i’d also like to throw out there that femininity isn’t necessarily the """"""femininity"""""" that you seemed to be referring to in your ask. concepts of femininity and masculinity aren’t limited to any one society’s understanding of them. by that i mean that i think it’s not at all uncommon for someone who considers themself to be feminine or masculine to consider themselves as such not because of things outside of themself, as you put it. femininity and masculinity are not always performative but can very much also describe things that are entirely natural or innate to a person; things that society or the person themself just happen to subsequently refer to as ‘femininity’, ‘masculinity’, ‘androgyny’ and/ or even ‘maveriquinity’...
too long and convoluted; don’t read: i see no reason why being feminine, a form of self and / or gender expression, would conflict with being a particular gender like maverique. if there can be feminine men (hint: there are feminine men) then there can be feminine mavs (hint: there are feminine mavs). one’s gender does not dictate how one expresses oneself or one’s gender... and i ought to revise my definition of maverique to make that clearer.

On the topic of conscious/active unorthodoxy vs unconscious/passive unorthodoxy within maverine genders (a.k.a gendermaverick-like maverine genders vs maverique-like maverine genders), discusessed here in the section about autonomity, do you all think there's a need for terminology to distinguish them?
I guess maveriquinity/maveriquine gender can, by extension, already exist for any maverine gender with passive unorthodoxy, but how do you call the other ones? maverickinity or maverickenity sounds to close in pronunciation and spelling.

I found the term outheric, which is a word for being outherine-aligned, so I made my own!
Mavric: A term for someone who is maverine-aligned.
I borrowed colors from my maverine flag redesign with some other colors added to match. While I personally use some lovely muted blue, teal, and green to represent my own maverinity, I wanted this flag to represent everybody.
Another similar term is denebian, which is a word for maverine or maveriquine alignment. - 💙💚

(As of creating this blog, I have noticed people tagging "maverique" on posts that don't talk about maveriquinity specifically. Makes for a difficult time finding posts to put in the queue.)
maverique representation in our tags
i've seen a few people talk about the fact that maverique tags on social media tend to be either maverique 101 content and/or content by non-maveriques rather than actual maveriques talking about our own experiences or even just existing or whatever, and i've talked about this too.
it's frustrating because a lot of people believe that we don't actually exist, that maverique is just some empty gender that was coined 10 years ago but no one actually identifies as.
and personally when i post online, there's not too much i can say that is very specific to my maverique experience. a lot of the stuff i talk about applies to a lot of other abinary people too, if not nonbinary people as a whole.
but you know what? if you talk about something you experienced, if you talk about your gender, just tag it as maverique. even if it technically can apply to other nonbinary people too. even if you didn't use the word maverique doesn't actually come up in your text, picture, video or whatever else.
because if you're maverique and you talk about your gender, you're already talking about your maverique experience. you tag it to show people you're coming from a maverique perspective.
i personally often flip flop between calling myself maverique or just nonbinary but even when i don't use the word maverique in my content i still tag it as maverique, so our tag is actually populated by us and not just 101 content.
i can only encourage other maveriques to use the maverique tag as much as possible. i don't want to be the main person in the maverique tag on instagram, lol.
at the same time, i'd like to ask non-maveriques not to tag general nonbinary or trans stuff as maverique. if you're actually posting maverique content, like people asking you to design a maverique flag or symbol, that's fine. but there's a tendency for people to post very general stuff like "support our trans siblings" or "nonbinary people are valid" and tagging it with as many specific gender labels as possible. while it's nice of you to acknowledge our existence, it drowns out our own voices from our tags and makes it harder to find content from other maveriques. this is true for other less common labels too.
