Hello my dear friend 💖
It was my pleasure to decorate your Christmas tree! 🥰 I'll try to answer as many as possible so bear with me
Favorite Christmas season activity? Oh, that is definitely baking and even now I have two date cakes in the oven. 😊
Favorite Traditional Christmas song? That would be "En etsi valtaa, loistoa" which means "I Seek No Power Nor Splendour". It is basically a prayer for world peace and a wish for merry Christmas for both the rich and the poor.
Favorite Modern Christmas song? As corny as it might sound "Last Christmas" by Wham! I was a Wham! -girl in my youth. 😄
Favorite Christmas movie(s)? There are quite a few but here is few honorable mentions: It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Disney's From All of Us to All of You (1958), The Snowman based on the novel of Raymond Briggs and Santa Claus and the Magic Drum based on the children's book on the same name by Mauri Kunnas
Favorite Christmas episode (any tv show)? Usually we watch The Doctor Who's Christmas Special when it airs but nothing in particular comes to mind.
Favorite food to eat or serve for the Christmas meal? I love fish so that would be salmon, warm or cold smoked and graved salmon which is basically thinly sliced cured salmon using a mix of salt, sugar and dill. Another which I love is fish roe with smetana (a thick type of sour cream).
Favorite Christmas beverage or dessert? Beverage: alcohol free mulled wine, absolutely a must in Christmas, usually served with almond slices and raisins. Dessert: I love the traditional dessert, prune kissel. It is made with prunes and a sweet broth thickened with corn or potato starch. Usually it is served with cream, not whipped but plain cream. Of course you can use milk, any of it's substitutes or just enjoy it plain if you wish, it's all up to your taste. Another sweet I love is Yule tart/Star tart, puffy pastry with prune jam. This is the one that has risen eyebrows internationally because of its shape. It is star-shaped or a pinwheel but some people say it resembles a swastika. 🤷‍♀️
Most memorable Christmas gift you received as a child? Oh good god, that was sooo long ago. Sorry, no recollection of such. Age is catching up. 😂
Best Christmas gift you ever gave to anyone? My gifts are usually very practical so only their receivers could answer this one. 😊
If you have a Christmas tree, what’s your tree topper? A silver coloured star. Usually there is an angel and an elf just right under it. Christianity and Finnish ancient beliefs meeting under the same star. 🌟
What’s your favorite version of Santa in a movie? The Santa in Santa Claus and the Magic Drum. He's just so adorable trying to find the owner of the mysterious letter who is by the way very powerful Sámi shaman and causes havoc during the search.
Which fictional character would you like to be caught under the mistletoe with? Well, that would be our precious Elvenking Thranduil or the golden haired balrog slayer Glorfindel. Either will do. I hope they would be delighted to lift me a bit or otherwise their necks might get hurt. 🤭
Thank you for this wonderful ask, my friend. This was so much fun, you have no idea how many times I used Google to translate or find some type explanation. 😊

Mun "haul" Suomesta 🌟
As always, if you see any mistakes or want to give me any tips to improve my finnish, please feel free to comment under my post or send me an ask! I'm always happy to learn! (´∀`)♡

this post about vocabulary and reading also reminded me: when i was in high school i bought The Three Musketeers in German, because I’d already read it like a dozen times in Finnish and once in English and I wanted to try if I’d understand anything at all in German. it was such a fun experience because, no, I did not understand much per se, I understood maybe half of the words on a page. but at the same time, I’d read the book so many times before that I knew what was going on, and I ended up following it just fine :’D and I did learn some new words, too!
we also had this course in high school where we read childrens books in different languages. like the same exact book (we read Mauri Kunnas, can recommend :D) in Finnish, Swedish, German and English, and then we compared the translations. it was one of the most interesting things I’ve ever done because the translations were different, they emphasized very different things (and the Swedish ones often came up with stuff that wasn’t even in the source material lmao).
same with when I read The Gods Themselves in English for the first time after only having read it in Finnish (...several times lol) before. I have this favorite part in the book and I was waiting and waiting for it and ... then realized I’d missed it. the English text had other parts I loved and felt impactful but that particular one that I’d always treasured in Finnish? I didn’t even properly notice it in the English one.
just. languages, man! languages!

Ei tumpussa vaan facessa, mutta tuli mieleen että näinköhän joku Sastamalan rekryosasto on ostanut oikeudet käyttää Kunnaksen kirjan kansikuvaa omassa mainonnassaan, vai onko tää enemmän "kuva googlesta" -tyyppinen ratkaisu

This is the busiest week for Lapland tourism. Helsingin Sanomat travels up north to investigate the region's wintery appeal that has transformed Rovaniemi from a small town of 65,000 to a "staged Arctic travel destination".
Last year, Rovaniemi Airport set a visitor record of nearly 740,000, and this year's numbers have long since surpassed that. This is why Rovaniemi no longer markets winter or Christmas but is instead trying to get tourists excited about summer, according to HS.
The paper highlights the irony that the destination is out of reach for most average earners in Finland during the pricey Christmas season. Just as well, most elves and Santas there only speak English.
According to HS, the experience is not really Finnish at all. Rovaniemi doesn't feel like Finland, but more like an artificial fairyland, like Las Vegas, with tourist hotspots blending Lapland mysticism, Disney imagery, Mauri Kunnas and Nutcracker dolls.
F-35 vs drones
Finland's acquisition of 60 new F-35 fighter jets is its largest defence investment in the past 30 years, valued at some ten billion euros.
Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has recently fired off a series of posts on social media platform X, taking aim at the aircraft's capabilities compared to unmanned aerial systems.
According to Hufvudstadsbladet, the Tesla billionaire's criticism that the F-35s are outdated is not entirely incorrect, noting that next-generation solutions will likely involve a larger manned aircraft surrounded by smaller unmanned platforms. In western countries, drones are appealing since they do not risk the lives of fighter pilots, the paper explains.
Black Christmas
Parts of the country are set to experience a 'black Christmas,' with temperatures rising above freezing — including in Lapland — on Christmas Day, according to Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.
People in southern Finland can expect a snowless Christmas, should forecasts prove accurate. Rain and mild weather have melted much of the snow, particularly along the southern coast. While a white Christmas is expected in the southeastern corner of the country, snow will be scarce in the south and southwest.
On Christmas Eve, Lapland will see temperatures around -10 degrees Celsius, while southern and eastern regions will experience near-zero temperatures, with some areas close to the coast slightly above freezing.

Goodnight, Mr. Clutterbuck by Mauri Kunnas, Jill Timbers (Translator), Mauri Kunnas (Illustrator)
From the award-winning Mauri Kunnas, Finland's most celebrated children's author, a hilarious picture book which follows the adventures of a sleepwalking goat. Mr. Clutterbuck, a mild-mannered goat, sleepwalks his way into unimaginable adventures: one night the lead singer of a rock band, the next an entrepreneur, Mr. Clutterbuck soon finds himself the hero of his town. A book that will send readers of all ages into fits of laughter.
Mr. Clutterbuck is blissfully unaware of his reputation as the busiest and loudest sleepwalker in town. Meek and mild-mannered when awake, at night Mr. Clutterbuck seeks thrills and adventures. Often the accidental instigator of chaos, Mr. Clutterbuck soon becomes the lead singer of a rock band, an entrepreneur, a disco king, and, eventually, the hero of his town. Goodnight, Mr. Clutterbuck is sure to captivate readers of all ages as we wonder what kind of situation Mr. Clutterbuck will find himself in next. With a lively tapestry of characters, including a motorcycle gang of cats and crocodiles, a hippo in charge of a sausage factory, and an ill-tempered bull at a theme park, Mauri Kunnas playfully shows what can happen when you step outside your comfort zone.
