Golden Bears Beat Demon Deacons
Cal Moves Closer to Bowl with 46-36 Win
Fernando Mendoza passes for 385 yards, 2 TDs
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The California football team forced four turnovers and quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw for a career-high 385 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, and the Golden Bears registered their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory in program history with a 46-36 triumph over host Wake Forest on Friday night at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Placekicker Ryan Coe booted a pair of 54-yard field goals and wide receiver Mikey Matthews notched career-highs of eight catches and 83 yards, as Cal led wire-to-wire and inched closer to bowl eligibility for the second year in a row. The Bears (5-4) need to win one of their final three games of the regular season to become eligible for the post season.
Cal picked off three passes, including a game-clinching interception by linebacker Liam Johnson with 1:54 to play.
"It's really impressive," Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said. "It's hard to win in this conference. We have a ton of respect for Wake Forest. I'm proud of our players."
Mendoza threw touchdown passes to Matthews and fellow wide receiver Tobias Merriweather, a highly touted transfer from Notre Dame who made his Cal debut Friday after missing the first eight games of the season with an injury. Fellow transfer wide receiver Kyion Grayes, a widely heralded athlete from Ohio State, also played his first game for Cal after recovering from injury.
Merriweather had six catches for 52 yards while Grayes added a pair of receptions for 22 yards. Eleven different players caught at least one pass for the Bears. It's clear the Bears will have a lot more offensive weapons late in the season.
"It was great to have (Merriweather) and Kyion Grayes back in the rotation, throwing passes to them and getting back our chemistry," Mendoza said. "Those are two guys I'm going to get the ball to."
Mendoza added a 5-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter.
Cornerback Nohl Williams recorded another interception to extend his national lead to seven this season while safety Craig Woodson also had a pick during the game's waning seconds to polish off the win. The Bears scored their first touchdown of the game on a 16-yard fumble return by Miles Williams on a kickoff.
Coe, who made just 7 of 14 field goal attempts through the first six games and was eventually replaced by Derek Morris as Cal's primary placekicker, maintained his role as the Bears' choice for longer field goals and responded by twice falling 1 yard shy of tying the program record for longest field goal.
"I'm just proud of that guy for continuing to stick with it through some tough times," Wilcox said. "For Ryan to come in and hit two 54-yarders, that's big time. We knew he could do it. We've seen it. It's not surprising. It's really a testament to him."
The Bears got off to a strong start, taking the opening kickoff and registering five first downs on a 64-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard field goal by Morris. Williams pushed Cal's lead to 10-0 on the ensuing kickoff after Hunter Barth forced a fumble during the return. The Bears led 29-14 at the half and never looked back.
The teams traded scores throughout the second half, and the Demon Deacons started a possession from their own 17 trailing 39-36 with 2:17 to play. Johnson registered his interception on the second play of the drive, and running back Jaivian Thomas provided a cushion with an 11-yard touchdown run with 1:10 remaining.
Johnson and Barth split time at inside linebacker after Cade Uluave left the game with an injury in the second quarter. Barth finished with a career-high seven tackles, including a pair of sacks. Xavier Carlton and David Reese also had a pair of sacks for the Bears, who recorded seven overall.
"I just had to be ready when my number was called," Barth said. "That takes watching all the film, taking all the practice reps and paying attention to detail. It felt good to go out there and execute and leave it all out on the field."
Cal returns home next week to host Syracuse on Nov. 16 at Noon. The game will air on the CW.

Otis Williams (Otis Miles Jr.; October 30, 1941) is a baritone singer. Nicknamed “Big Daddy”, he is a songwriter and a record producer.
He is the founder and last surviving original member of the Motown vocal group The Temptations, a group in which he continues to perform; he owns the rights to the Temptations name.
He was born in Texarkana, Texas, to Otis Miles and Hazel Louise Williams. He moved to Detroit at age 10. He married Josephine Rogers (1961-64), and they had one son; he married Ann Cain (1967-73); Arleata “Goldie” Williams (1983).
These groups included He and the Siberians, the El Domingoes, and the Distants. In 1959, The Distants scored a local hit, co-written by him and their manager/producer Johnnie Mae Matthews, called “Come On”, with lead vocals by Richard Street. Future Distants recordings were not as successful, and after an offer from Berry Gordy of Motown Records, he and his friends/bandmates Elbridge “Al” Bryant and Melvin Franklin quit the Distants. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams from The Primes joined him, Bryant, and Franklin to create the Elgins, who signed to Motown in March 1961 as “The Temptations”.
The Temptations became one of the most successful acts in soul music over nearly five decades, during which singers such as David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, former Distant Richard Street, Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Theo Peoples, Ray Davis, and former Spinners singer G.C. Cameron have all been members. The group’s lineup changes were so frequent, stressful, and troublesome that he and Melvin Franklin promised each other they would never quit the group.
He was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations. He received an honorary doctorate from Stillman College. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2024/12/16/setting-terms/
Setting terms
The Packers are a different team when they take an early lead. There’s something about the offense asserting itself that gives the defense and the whole team a swagger.
This “momentum grabbing,” cuts both ways. Against Seattle and Miami, the games seemed well in-hand by early in the 2nd quarter. While three drives and no points early against Detroit felt like too much to overcome, and it was. Yes, the Packers had second half leads against Detroit, but with so few possessions the empty drives early were decisive.
Big Edge
Josh Jacobs and the offensive line were impressive early against Seattle. Jordan Love had a, “ho-hum” 123 passer rating, with two TD’s and no interceptions. Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson looked like quality veteran receivers and the offensive game plan used Jayden Reed effectively. Yet, these performances didn’t tip the balance, Edgerrin Cooper did.
The rookie linebacker was ridiculous. A sack, several pressures and tackles for loss, an interception, and another near interception. The kid was a terror. Earlier in the year Cooper showed promise. Sunday night he made his second round selection look like a steal.
This defense badly needs a game-changer. Is it possible that Coopers’ elite speed is the key that unlocks our defensive front? Against Seattle his explosiveness jumped off the screen. Looking back, only Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews in their prime and Zadarius Smith, for about a season and a half, have had that kind of impact in the last 15-years. Cooper is still a rookie and needs to show it game after game. But he could be “the guy” opposing offenses have to account for.
A big December win on the road. Beating a quality opponent. Quieting a loud environment on route to a comfortable win and a virtual lock on a playoff spot. These are all signs of a good win.
Nice to nitpick
Of late, the Packers have played so well it seems like nitpicking to point out problems. The thing is, it’s not. Some of these could be the difference in a close playoff game.
Matt La Fleur led his team in blunders Sunday night. It’s hard to see what he, or his booth advisors, saw to challenge on a Kenny Clark batted pass the Packers recovered. It was obviously an incomplete pass, but La Fleur challenged and lost. His challenge record in 2024 stands at 0-6.
Worse than the ill-conceived challenge was the end of first half clock management. To his credit, La Fleur owned his clock management failure when he seemed to be channeling his inner Matt Eberflus by frittering away 20+ seconds while he had timeouts in-hand. It’s easy to overlook in a 17-point win, but it cost the Packers 4-points and left the door open for Seattle.
Let’s hope ranting and complaining after 17-point road wins becomes a trend.

It's about the people camping out on my life following me around hating on me it is like they are born to get in my way in life no good get a life and get off of me and stop talking to me and leave me alone .
youtube
Talented Tenth and got my own Ferraris on Park Avenue 55th Street in New York City , The Joel Osteen store on 40th street in New York City and the hottest politics and plans for the future of New York City and other places like it , incubator man Free World is the Name and politics and deal making is my game . I did it by studying the book miseducation of the negro and learning that each chapter is a better role model and image for a brother like me to follow and so should you shape yourself after Martin Luther King Jr MLK and each chapter in the book miseducation of the negro pick a chapter and live that existence out .
Oh yeah while we on that subject taking a break from drawing up plans for a new project and plans I got going on for my future and the future of my city and cities like it . So is your future it is looking very bright for you . Go see the world and join the navy enjoy boot camp looking for something to do besides being a vagrabond feeling hopeless your being lied to you are more valuable than that and places like the navy can give you that experience .
Responsible and ethical action
The police force in every state is about to allow people to join the force without their high school diploma or GED which is good back in the days people I knew joined the police force did it right out of high school for the money or the job market wasn't paying enough it is easy employment and you get to serve , uplift and protect the very neighborhoods and community you grew up in so take pride in that , let that be your motivation it is just a job bro so go ahead tag your it so go ahead make something of yourself make your mom and dad proud of you . So stop and give your neighborhood kids their lectures play basketball with them , soccer and football with the kids and take pride in protecting and serving your community and helping out .
I can get with that good plan as long it create more job opportunities and create more role models for our community . Getting a good future without your diploma or certificate I wish it was like that back in my days growing up , thank goodness I got my second stage theater and you have a chance to make a better future for yourself which road will you take now .
Ethical people use their power to serve people , respect the rights of individuals and groups , and strive to be fair in their dealings with others .
Good luck .
