World of Warcraft Chronicle Volume IV "continues in the wake of the Cataclysm, as Horde and Alliance join forces to defeat both Warchief Garrosh Hellscream and the demonic Burning Legion. These victories are short lived, however, as the world’s factions are soon baited into war with each other, unknowingly empowering a cosmic threat waiting in the realms of Death. A brief review of the Marvel Multiverse ttrpg core book.
Tumblr media
The mechanics: pretty good, really, if crunchy. It uses what they call a d616, that being two regular d6 plus a differently colored d6. Roll all three, the 1 on the different die counts as a 6 or a crit or other special, add the ability modifier, compare to a set DC or the target's defense, 10 plus modifier. It fits and it works. If attacking, the special die also counts as the base damage. You can benefit from one or more edges, favorable factors, that allow you to reroll individual dice, or can be hindered by troubles that have an opposite effect. The Karma system makes a return, allowing a heroic character to invoke multiple edges per session and earn them back through noble actions, good RP, and playing up their idiom. I dig the system overall. Again, kinda crunchy.
The capabilities/powers: come up short. Not everything is represented here. I tried out this system by trying to port my favorite OC, Nick Chapel, Psychic Detective and Nick doesn't have to do much: investigate, know the occult, strong telepathy, ESP, a psychic touch attack equivalent to Magik's soul sword or Psylocke's psychic blades, psychometry, and premonitions. Fairly unilateral and not asking for too much. Psychometry and premonitions were not represented at all (though to be fair those are not common powers in Marvel) and I had to find a lackluster backdoor to the psychic punch. The bulk of the powers are grouped into categories so you can build by theme and get a little more out of your buck but it doesn't always make sense. There's a whole block of Spider powers that could have been categorized more broadly. There are some things you can only unlock mechanically if armed or if unarmed and those didn't always need to be mutually exclusive. So in the end, fairly well covered but they didn't get everything and some bits fit poorly.
Advancement/Experience: almost totally lacking. There are only a handful of rank levels representing different tiers of play (local vs national vs planetary, etc.) The GM gets to declare when you as a party go up a rank. That's it, that's the whole system. There are so many powers to choose from but you only actually get to command a handful of them. There needs to additionally be an experience system that lets you at least gradually increase your abilities and climb your power trees. I hold that gradual increases work better than receiving new powers in a bundle; getting increases one at a time allows for a learning curve. I would have to homebrew and fix this lack.
Art: excellent! All taken from actual published comics. Looks fine.
Profiles: about 40% of the core book is character profiles and as a big Marvel nerd of course I'm going to disagree with the bulk of them. They made T'challa weak on brains and made Blade a higher rank than Black Widow. I'm going to abstain because I would pick these to pieces and I can tell from the other writing that this Mister Matt Forbeck is also a high level Marvel nerd and would disagree with my takes with an equal zeal.
Final Rating: would play, but definitely need to patch it up, most especially the lack of an advancement system. I see on the whole what the creator was aiming for and he didn't miss the mark by too much.

Note
Based on this, I'd say starting with the earliest ones is probably a good idea for you! If you're really interested in going through everything, it's a huge undertaking to hit everything but going in the order it came out feels pretty natural.
That said I can give some specific sources:
If you're interested in Thel: The Cole Protocol by Tobias S. Buckell heavily features him as he was when he was younger, which is a huge contrast to who he becomes later.
If you're looking for a good source on Spartan-IVs: New Blood by Matt Forbeck is a short book (I think it might even count as a novella) where Buck from ODST describes the process of becoming a Spartan-IV. (There's also a comic, Initiation, that follows Palmer through the process too.)
My Switch just stopped working and I have a 4hr flight tomorrow, got any recommendations for read order of the halo books? and/or just one I should read randomly for the hell of it?
It depends on what you like!
If you like Chief, you really can just go ahead and start with The Fall of Reach and First Strike imo. Fall of Reach is an origin story, First Strike is what happens between the first two games to explain how Chief and Cortana got back to Earth at all.
Are there particular characters or subjects you are curious about?

Reading and Rolling
Do you consider yourself a nerd? Are you a Dungeons & Dragons player or dungeon master? Or are you perhaps a fan of the lore or fantasy stories? Maybe you're just a fan of Stranger Things and you're generally curious about the game.
Well, if you've answered 'Yes' to any of those, then this selection of books just might catch your fancy.
Tumblr media
Some you might be familiar with; others might be something completely unexpected. Read them to inspire your DnD campaign, or maybe just entertain yourself!
Not sure what to pick? Well, why not decide with the roll of an 8-sided die? Happy reading!
(All of these are of course available at your library, assuming your library is LCPL. Yes, even the official manuals!)
1. Endless Quest: Into the Jungle by @mattforbeck
Get ready! As a Dwarf-cleric, you've been given a task to rescue an adventurer who holds a very important artifact. Can you survive the jungles of Chult? Trust me: in this land, everything's a danger to you, and even victory might not feel so sweet, either. I love choosing my path in these stories, but these ones feel heavy. Good luck! *Only available in audiobook format.
2. ORCS! (Vol. 1) by Christine Larsen
A fun, somewhat juvenile, little trade paperback (without the paper if you get the Hoopla version) featuring a family of orcs banished because of a squirrel-related incident following a frustrating adventure. They'll cross paths with monsters and humanoid races common in fantasy adventures, while winding up on new adventure tying in with another ongoing story.
3. Goblin Quest by @jimhines
Now this is a fun alternative to the classic D&D-esque tropes we're all familiar with. Here we've got a klutzy, near-sighted goblin named Jig who's essentially the runt of his community... a community of cannon-fodder for adventurers! Naturally, you'd think he'd be dead when living with these bullies (especially after crossing paths with a team of adventurers). Instead, he's now their “guide” on a mission that's all too likely to get him killed.
4. The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins by Clint McElroy & @careydraws
If you want some laughs, good art, a surprisingly well-thought-out story, and a even a little bit of seriousness, this might be the book for you. You've got a human warrior, a dwarf cleric, and an elf wizard being guided by the dungeon master on an adventure based on a particularly popular podcast. Too bad this trio is so incompetent! Think they can manage some basic “gerblins” before things get really challenging? See for yourself.
(Editor's note: More titles under the cut to save your dash, you're welcome)
5. Volo's Guide To Monsters
Want to learn about monster lore in the latest edition of D&D? Maybe create a community or dungeon? Perhaps you want to play as a monster? That's right! You can! This book is the perfect supplement for players and dungeon masters or a fun read fans of the fantasy genre.
6. The Monsters Know What They're Doing by Keith Ammann
Are you a new dungeon master setting up your first campaign or maybe a veteran DM looking for ideas to spice up your latest campaign? Do you want to make your enemy encounters more than just a hack 'n slash? Then this book just might be for you. You don't have to figure out how to get inside the monsters' heads; Keith Ammann does it for you!
7. Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons by Patrick Rothfuss
Were you expecting this? I know I wasn't! You're gonna get a lot of laughs and maybe learn a bit about the history of D&D and its past versions in this graphic novel. It might even give you some campaign ideas, or perhaps just an appreciation for how different players play the game.
8. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Do you have a character that doesn't quite fit standard D&D mechanics? Are you player or dungeon master who perhaps favors more homebrew-styles in your campaigns? Then this might be for you. It's a more recent entry in the franchise that offers optional, reasonable variations of rules for playing, including stat bonuses, class features, and a campaign.
See more of Garrick's recs
