Rebecca Crosby, Judd Legum, and Tesnim Zekeria at Popular Information:
On Monday, the shooter drove to Covenant School, a private elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, retrieved three guns from the vehicle — two AR-style semi-automatic weapons and one pistol — and shot out a window to gain entry to the school. Once inside, he murdered six people, including three children. The attack ended after the 28-year-old shooter, a former student at the school, was killed in a confrontation with the police.
In the aftermath of the mass shooting, a disturbingly common occurrence in the United States, the focus online turned to his gender identity. According to authorities, the shooter identified as trans and used he/him pronouns on social media.
Investigators say the shooter was being treated for an "emotional disorder" but are still working to establish a motive for the attack. But numerous right-wing pundits, including some with millions of followers, already claimed to have it figured out.
Benny Johnson, a right-wing provocateur and admitted plagiarist with 1.4 million followers on Twitter, said the Nashville shooting was proof that "the modern trans movement is radicalizing activists into terrorists." His commentary received a boost from Elon Musk, who owns Twitter and has 132 million followers.
Johnson's tweet, as of Wednesday evening, was viewed more than 10 million times. And it's total bunk.
Johnson identifies four mass shooters since 2018 who identified as non-binary or trans. The alleged shooter in the 2022 Colorado Springs attack is Anderson Lee Aldrich. During the legal proceedings, Aldrich claimed to be non-binary. But experts in online extremism suspect this was a troll. Aldrich allegedly targeted and murdered five people at an LGBTQ club. According to the lead investigator in the case, Aldrich used anti-gay and racist slurs while playing video games online and ran a neo-Nazi website. Aldrich's next-door neighbor for more than a year also said Aldrich used anti-gay slurs and "never used they/them pronouns with him or mentioned being nonbinary."
That leaves two incidents: a 2018 mass shooting in Aberdeen, Maryland that killed four by an individual in the process of transitioning to become male, and a 2019 mass shooting in Denver that left one dead. The Denver shooting had two perpetrators, one of whom is trans.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, since 2018, there have been 2,827 mass shootings in the United States. Even if you include Aldrich, Johnson has listed four shooters that identified as non-binary or trans — 0.14% of the total incidents over that time period. A 2022 study estimates that 0.5% of all U.S. adults identify as trans.
So Johnson's tweet does not prove "the modern trans movement is radicalizing activists into terrorists." The truth is that nearly all mass shootings are perpetrated by cis men, and very few mass shootings are perpetrated by trans people or cis women.
Although Johnson's tweet was baseless, its sentiments were echoed by many influential voices on the right. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted about the "incredible rise of trans/non-binary mass shooters in the last few years," claiming they are by "far the largest group committing as a percentage of population." Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) responded to the shooting by claiming that accepting the existence of trans people is dangerous. "[I]f early reports are accurate that a trans shooter targeted a Christian school, there needs to be a lot of soul searching on the extreme left. Giving in to these ideas isn't compassion, it's dangerous," Vance tweeted. On Fox News, Tucker Carlson stated flatly that "the trans movement is targeting Christians, including with violence."
Right-wing pundits reacted to the Covenant School shooting by focusing on the shooter’s gender identity to score anti-trans points instead of focusing on gun violence, including Benny Johnson’s lie-filled tweet that falsely painted the trans rights movement as “radicalizing activists into terrorists”.

Matthew Aldrich (“Coco,” “Lightyear”) is writing the film, which will be produced by Matt Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho — but the story will be separate from Reeves’ ongoing Gotham-verse with “The Batman” and “The Penguin.” Instead, it will depict how the friendship between Grayson and Todd as youths becomes tested by their diverging ideas for what their future should be. (Reports that the characters will begin as a pair of thieves in the film were false.) In the DC comics, after their respective stints as Batman’s sidekick, Robin, Dick becomes the superhero Nightwing, while Jason transforms into the violent vigilante Red Hood.

James Gunn Has Announced A New DC Studios Film, Dynamic Duo
James Gunn took to twitter to announce a new film, Dynamic Duo, which features the Dick Grayson and Jason Todd Robin's.
Article Summary
James Gunn reveals new film, Dynamic Duo, featuring Robins Dick Grayson and Jason Todd on social media.
Dynamic Duo is the first feature from Swaybox, blending animation, puppetry, and CGI with Matt Aldrich's script.
DC fans can expect innovative animation and a unique take on two iconic characters.
Several Batman projects in the works, including Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman Part II, due October 2026.
James Gunn is bypassing all of the usual avenues and announcing new projects on social media for all of us to see. Right now, we know of quite a few DC Studios projects that are in development, and it sounds like we're getting another. Gunn took to his social media to share a very interesting-sounding new project with Dynamic Duo. Gunn shared a statement on his official X/Twitter account and an explanation of the film,
"Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a mix of animation, puppetry, and CGI, a script from the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho. This is something special."
If you're a Robin fan, then it sounds like all of your dreams are about to come true because you're not just getting Dick Grayson in this feature but certified mess of a human being, Jason Todd as well. The way that Gunn describes this project is very interesting as well. We always love to see new advances in animation, and it sounds like Dynamic Duo will do that.
In terms of Batman, there are quite a few different projects in the works and being released at DC Studios. Joker: Folie à Deux comes out this weekend, and The Penguin is doing very well for HBO. The Batman Part II currently has a release date of October 2, 2026, and another Batman film, called The Brave and the Bold, is also in the works. Those are just the projects we know about since, with this announcement, it's pretty clear that there are plenty of other things bouncing around at DC Studios that are being kept under wraps.

Add another title to the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation Goddamn That's A Mouthful slate, unsurprisingly a DC-inspired property.
I guess Ron Clements and John Musker's METAL MEN was part of that $115m write-off a while back, alongside TOTO and COYOTE VS. ACME... Because this new WBPA-DC movie we're getting is DYNAMIC DUO, a Robin story with both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
A hybrid film, DC Studios head James Gunn curiously described it as a mix of "animation, puppetry, and CGI"...
I was a bit puzzled by that at first, given that CGI *is* animation... Did this mean that 2D was being employed? Or was this a mesh of DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS cartoony CG and realistic live-action blockbuster CG? The studio that's doing the animation for this film is Swaybox, and having seen some of their work... Including this Super Bowl ad:
youtube
We're in for a visual dynamic, game-changing picture, I reckon.
No director has been named, but THE BATMAN director Matt Reeves is involved as producer, and the script is being written by COCO and LIGHTYEAR scribe Matt Aldrich.
I felt like Warner Bros. had been dragging their feet on a theatrical animated DC adaptation after SPIDER-VERSE, though they did do the pretty fun aforementioned SUPER-PETS, and one year prior to SPIDER-VERSE you had THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE. But I mean something seismic, like SPIDER-VERSE was, like MUTANT MAYHEM was. Something like that unmade BATMAN BEYOND movie that was being kicked around a few years ago... A superhero animated feature that bothers to flip the script on what a theatrical animated movie could look and feel like? Maybe this will be that kind of movie?
Anyways, so far, the Warner animation slate...
12/13/2024: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM
3/6/2026: THE CAT IN THE HAT
7/23/2027: BAD FAIRIES
11/5/2027: MARGIE CLAUS
TBD: OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO
TBD: MEET THE FLINTSTONES
TBD: THE LUNAR CHRONICLES
TBD: MEERKAT MANOR
TBD: DYNAMIC DUO
I'd imagine the earliest this gets out is in 2028, given that 2027 is booked, and 2026 presumably has another picture w/o a release date (FLINTSTONES?)... But I could be wrong. It still sounds like it could be a fun time.

'Thousands of movie fans are planning to explore both the neon pink world of “Barbie” and the complicated mind of J. Robert Oppenheimer on the same day.
Thousands of AMC Stubs members have bought tickets for both films on the same day ahead of their premieres on July 21.
“That more than 20,000 moviegoers have already made plans and purchased tickets to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day is a great sign that the growing online conversation around seeing both of these incredible films is turning into ticket sales,” Elizabeth Frank, executive VP of worldwide programming and chief content officer at AMC Theatres told Variety this week.
Though, according to Variety, how the number compares to average purchase rates is unclear.
Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" — starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Emily Blunt — is a three-hour epic thriller about the American physicist and his role in developing the atomic bomb during World War II. "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, is a comedy about the life of Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) in Barbie Land and their journey to the real world.
The double feature of the contrasting blockbusters has become an internet phenomenon known as, “Barbieheimer,” with fans creating their own black-and-pink memes, apparel and movie posters of the two films.
The Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford is screening the two films starting on July 20 and pre-sale tickets are selling faster than normal, Louisa Greene, director of marketing and development for the theater, said.
"There's a lot of buzz [and] a lot of excitement from Avon patrons about both films," she said.
The Avon is hosting its own Barbie and Ken costume contest for theatergoers at its 5:20 and 7:45 p.m. "Barbie" screenings on July 20, during which attendees will enter on a mini-red carpet and present their costumes the judges. The winners from each screening will win the theater's bronze membership package: free movies for a year for two people. The theater will also have a 3 p.m. screening that day.
The venue is also partnering with the Greenwich International Film Festival for a screening of "Oppenheimer" at 7 p.m. that evening, she said.
Greene believes the two divergently different films share qualities that appeal a wide range of movie fans. Both have big-name directors and casts, she said. "Oppenheimer" is a historical drama about events that are still relevant today, while "Barbie" is a comedy that could spark nostalgia among viewers, she said.
Warner Brothers predicts that "Barbie" will see a $70 to $80 million opening at the box office, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Universal Studios is tracking around $40 million for the "Oppenheimer" debut.
Prospector Theater in Ridgefield is also hosting screenings of the two films on July 20 and it has sold most of the tickets for both events, Ren Burkardt, the theater manager, said.
"The weekend is already looking like it's picking up as well. People are very excited," she said.
The theater employees plan to decorate the lobby pink that weekend and dress up in Barbie-themed outfits, Burkardt said. KC 101 radio station will also stop by from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday to give away items, she said.
In partnership with The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the theater will host a live virtual conversation right before the "Oppenheimer" screening with artist and director Bryan McGovern Wilson and artist and curator Richard Klein. The two will discuss Wilson's "Oppenheimer Ghost" exhibit, a replica of Oppenheimer's hat that is positioned in uranium glass, the event description says. The exhibit will be on display in the museum until Aug. 27, according to the museum.
"I just want to encourage everyone to come to the movies. The experience is completely different in person with friends and family and all the excitement of a busy lobby than anything else," Burkardt said.
National movie theater chains with venues in Connecticut also have special deals for the two movies. AMC Theatres is offering Stubs members the chance to win a Barbie-themed vacation and bonus points for those going to see "Oppenheimer." AMC has locations in Norwalk, Stamford, Trumbull, Danbury, Plainville, Southington and Lisbon, according to its website.
Cinemark is currently selling "Barbie" movie merchandise in theaters. These items can include beach ball cups, a popcorn tin and blanket, according to the theater chain's Instagram. Cinemark theaters are located in Enfield, Manchester, Milford and North Haven.'

Woman threatened businesses with violence in the wake of the Club Q shooting. She got arrested.
A 40-year-old woman named Sharon Robinson has been arrested and charged in connection to threats made against Colorado LGBTQ+ businesses in the city of Denver and the county of Glendale. Robinson allegedly made threatening calls in the weeks following the Club Q massacre which killed five people and injured at least 22 others. --- Related Stories Lauren Boebert says LGBTQ+ people are “degenerates” in calling for North Face boycott She is upset about a drag queen’s wholesome Instagram video announcing a Pride event for The North Face. --- In her calls, she used anti-LGBTQ+ slurs, threatened to “shoot your bar up,” and said, “You’re gonna be shot up like Club Q,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) reported. Get the Daily Brief The news you care about, reported on by the people who care about you. A grand jury indicted Robinson, finding that she “intentionally selected her victims because of their actual and perceived sexual orientation,” the DOJ added. Such targeting could cause her to face hate crime charges which also carry higher sentences. Robinson appeared in court on Wednesday and was released on a $50,000 bond, Chicago Public Radio News reported, and will be prosecuted in Colorado. She is barred from traveling outside of New York City and Long Island except to Colorado for court. The Club Q shooting occurred in the early morning hours of November 20, 2022 in the city of Colorado Springs, home to Focus on the Family, one of the nation’s oldest anti-LGBTQ hate groups. Anti-LGBTQ+ right-wing media figures like Tucker Carlson, Matt Walsh, Steven Crowder, and others alternately denied responsibility for fomenting hatred against queer people and said that LGBTQ+ people caused the shooting by allegedly supporting non-existent “child genital mutilation.” The suspected shooter, Anderson Lee Aldrich, faces more than 300 charges. Aldrich’s lawyers say that they identify as nonbinary and use they/them pronouns. They planned the attack in advance, prosecutors said, making a map of Club Q and visiting the club at least six times prior to the attack. The suspected shooter was taken down by a military veteran less than a minute after the shooting began. One patron stomped on the suspect with her high heel shoes while the veteran held him down. Detective Rebecca Joines testified that Aldrich ran a neo-Nazi website featuring a white supremacist training video glorifying mass shootings, and posting an image of a Pride parade with a rifle scope on it. They also used anti-LGBTQ+ and racist slurs while gaming. After the shooting, President Joe Biden (D) sent a letter to the bar’s owners expressing his “deepest condolences” and stating the need for “a ban on assault weapons” and “other common-sense gun safety measures.” Six months later, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed four new gun control bills into law. Club Q announced that it would reopen in fall 2023 with enhanced security measures. Survivors of the shooting say they feel hope for the community as it continues to heal from the violence. http://dlvr.it/SphDW9

so we know Darcy speaks in plural pronouns when functioning as a unit as the Core (we/our/us/etc). they don't stray from that speaking pattern UNLESS someone specific in the Core is fronting (we'll use system talk because that is essentially what Darcy is), and that straying is in the form of SINGULAR pronouns (I/me/my/etc). we know this canonically because of All In and the way that Darcy talks to itself when Aldrich specifically fronts:
notice the use of "my" in Darcy's moment of panic; we have very strong reason to believe that that's Aldrich, since he was JUST trying to control Andrias before Sasha stopped Darcy.
NOW: in The Beginning of the End, the way Darcy speaks to Anne in particular has ALWAYS stuck out to me because of how deeply personal their insults against her are. yes, we know the Core is using Marcy's memories to their advantage to hurt Sasha and Anne, but... well, there's a sting to it that's always made me think - what if Marcy has more direct influence over those comments than we think? Darcy calls Anne stupid, and we know Marcy sees themself as smarter - and better - than Anne. not convinced on that? here ("they" in this instance refers to Sasha and Marcy):
(source: Matt Braly, creator of Amphibia, said in interview beginning at timestamp 35:35)
SO LIKE. with that in mind. I was rewatching bits of TBotE (with my wonderful partners) and we ofc got to Darcy's bits of insulting Anne, and I noticed something that made me do a full double take:
look. look. do I think Marcy would have intentionally, straight up just said something like that to Anne with no remorse and while they're in their right mind? no, of course not. but they're not in their right mind - they're trapped in a system that wants to take over the universe. and yeah, you can argue the point that Marcy has little control over what Darcy does.
but I just don't think those comments were coming from nowhere. and I definitely don't think they were coming from Aldrich.
can I make a note about Darcy that the Marcy fans are gonna crucify me for
#my followers already know the sasharcy interview well but I'm stressing it here because this one is going in the TAGS#marcy wu#darcy wu#amphibia
