One of the fiercest legislative fights of 2019 was over a bill limiting the amount that many California landlords can hike rent.

Six years later, legislators were back at it again as the Assembly’s housing committee took up a bill Thursday, authored by Democratic Assemblymember Ash Kalra of San Jose, which would:

Reduce the cap from 10% to 5% (or 2% plus the current inflation rate, whichever is lower);

Extend the law to single-family homes (currently exempt);

Make the law permanent (current law sunsets in 2030).

If crowd size at a mid-morning weekday committee hearing is any indication, Assembly Bill 1157 is among the most contentious bills of the year. Advocates on both sides crowded into the hearing room and blocked the hallway outside in color-coded droves. Tenant advocates with the nonprofit Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment sported yellow; landlords allied with the California Apartment Association made up a sea of red.

Supporters of the bill argue that the current statutory cap is far too high for low-income renters, especially given the punishing inflation of the last few years, and that the carve-out for single-family homes is unfair.

Tammy Alvarado, a San Diego County renter and bill proponent: “Most people’s American dream is to buy a house and ours is just to remain in our house. Unless something changes, becoming homeless is a reality for my family.”

The bill passed the committee, but narrowly, 7 to 5.

Many Democrats, particularly in the Assembly, have trained their legislative focus this year on making it easier, cheaper and more enticing to build new housing. Even some of the lawmakers who voted for the bill Thursday did so half-heartedly, lamenting the cooling effect the policy might have on the construction of new homes at a time when the state is desperate for more overall supply.

As with current law, the bill would not apply to homes that are 15 years old or newer. Most economists agree that rent control measures do tend to discourage the construction of new homes and the upkeep of old ones, while providing financial stability to long-time renters. And as with any policy, the details matter.

The tension between supply boosters and skeptics is likely to become a dominant theme in this year’s legislative session. On Monday, a major housing production bill stalled and another only barely skated by in the Senate Housing Committee, when the chairperson called the bills’ lack of hardcoded affordability requirements a “non-starter.”

Two days later, over in the Assembly, Speaker Robert Rivas, a Salinas Democrat, issued his list of priority housing legislation. Notably, AB 1157 did not make the cut.

Cities, law enforcement force concession on homelessness bill

State Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez’s effort to stop cities from arresting homeless people for camping in public places fell flat this week in the face of opposition from cities and law enforcement agencies.

With visible tears, the Democrat from Pasadena opted to cut the most controversial part of her bill.

Pérez: “I understand that cities still want the ability to be able to provide clean communities for residents. But at the same time, we need to recognize that these are people with humanity, too.”

Pérez agreed to amend Senate Bill 634 to instead prohibit cities from punishing outreach workers for providing aid to unhoused people (Fremont recently criminalized “aiding” and “abetting” homeless camps, but later walked back that language). The bill also would prevent cities from passing ordinances that ban shelters and supportive housing (as Norwalk did last year).

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie was among those who opposed Pérez’s effort to limit how cities crack down on homeless camps. VERSÍCULO DE LA MAÑANA....Proverbios 13:11

En este versículo, Salomón habla sobre la diferencia que hay entre la riqueza que se adquiere repentinamente y la riqueza que uno se gana lenta pero honestamente. En ese versículo se está hablando tanto del dinero que se gana debido a la avaricia o a través de la mentira, como del que se gana de una manera rápida. Las personas que buscan enriquecerse sin ser honestos, aprovechándose de los demás o haciendo planes para hacerles daño, al final se quedan sin dinero tan rápido como ganaron ese mismo dinero.

En la actualidad, existe lo que se llama la "maldición de la lotería". Hay muchas personas que juegan a la lotería y ponen todas sus esperanzas en ella. Lamentablemente, muchas de las personas que ganan el "gran premio" de la lotería acaban estando peor de lo que lo estaban antes de ganarse ese dinero. Debido a que no hicieron nada para ganarse ese dinero, no saben cómo usarlo, protegerlo o administrarlo con sabiduría.

El otro tipo de riqueza de la que se habla aquí es el tipo de riqueza que se gana de pronto, el tipo de riqueza que uno se podría ganar deshonestamente, a través de un robo, una estafa, engaños o de alguna otra manera deshonesta. Acán se hizo rico a través de medios que fueron muy deshonestos. El Señor le dijo al pueblo de Israel que no se llevara nada del pueblo de Jericó porque todos los materiales fueron consagrados para el Señor (Josué 6:17–19), pero Acán se llevó un hermoso manto, 200 siclos de plata y un lingote de oro de 50 siclos, y los escondió en la tierra dentro de su tienda (Josué 7:21). Sin embargo, al final lo perdió todo tan rápido como lo había ganado. Cuando descubrieron el pecado que habían cometido, el pueblo de Israel lo mató apedreándolo (Josué 7:24–25). Por lo tanto, es mucho mejor enriquecerse poco a poco y de una manera honrada, tal y como lo señala Salomón aquí.

La eternidad también nos ayuda a entender la importancia que tiene y que no tiene la riqueza que podemos adquirir en esta vida. Toda riqueza del mundo al final se queda atrás cuando morimos (Proverbios 11:7; Lucas 12:16–21; 1 Corintios 3:15). Las recompensas espirituales que se ganan con el paso del tiempo mientras servimos a Dios son las únicas recompensas que durarán para siempre (Mateo 6:19–20; 10:42).

A veces nos dejamos llevar por la idea de que tener más cosas nos hará más felices, pero Proverbios 13:11 nos recuerda que el verdadero valor está en lo que cultivamos en nuestro interior. Las posesiones pueden venir y van, pero el amor, la amistad y nuestra paz interior son lo que realmente nos enriquece y permanece. Así que, la próxima vez que busques 'riqueza', piensa en lo que realmente cuenta...

Scott double-checked the date then closed the app and leaned on the balcony, watching the gulls land on Mateo to roost. His forehead creased with worry.

“EOS, could you look up the term dates for Estera’s school for me?”

“The current term ends in 4 weeks. Would you like the dates of the holidays and teacher training days for the next 6 years?”

“No, that’ll do. Thanks EOS.”

“I have also established that Estera Hermaszewska is marked as on sick leave and a substitute teacher has been engaged for 3 weeks starting two days ago.”

“EOS! No! You can’t just… I shouldn’t know that!”

“I thought you would want to know because you are displaying concern for her well-being. The school does not have particularly robust security on its staff records. There is a wealth of information here.”

“Stop. EOS. Please stop looking.”

“I have closed the connection. I am sorry, Scott Tracy, I did not intend to cause you distress. John will be displeased.”

Scott paused. There was a lot to unpack there, but he’d return to it later.

“I should have been more clear, it’s my fault. In future, when I ask you to find something out please would you limit your search to publicly available information unless I specifically ask otherwise?”

“Certainly. May I ask why you wish to restrict your knowledge about your friend’s welfare?”

Scott twitched slightly. “I don’t want to, exactly, but… has John discussed the concept of privacy with you?”

“He has explained we need to protect certain types of data. But I was only telling you and you are her friend.”

“Not really EOS, we barely know each other.” Another pause as he pondered how to explain. “But even if we were very good friends… part of human relationships is finding out about each other FROM each other. I should only know what she wants to tell me. To do otherwise is an invasion of privacy and would just make things… strange.”

“John knows a great deal of information about Estera Hermaszewska and they are not friends.”

Scott sighed. “John is a special case.”

“He has also informed Virgil Tracy, Tanusha Kyrano and Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward.”

“He has, has he?”

“Yes. Perhaps this is a fact he did not intend me to share with you at this time.”

“I suspect so EOS. But thank you for telling me.”

Scott headed indoors, suddenly deeply weary. Sleep was unlikely until he’d figured this one out though, so he turned his back on his own bedroom and made his way to his brother’s studio.

His big brother had several distinct ways of knocking on his door. All were the same rhythm - Tap-te-TAP-tap - but the volume and speed would give Virgil advanced notice of what kind of mood he was in and a split second to prepare. Right now Scott was… unsure, worried about something. He made sure to add as much warmth and encouragement to his “come in Scotty” as he could.

“You always know it’s me.”

“Yep, it’s all the spy cameras I have set up… I’m kidding, Scott.” The brotherly eyebrows relaxed back into merely confused mode. “What’s up?”

“Can’t I just want to hang out?”

Virgil raised an eyebrow. Scott sighed.

“I have a bit of a…. Quandary.”

He watched his brother’s face as he explained. When he wasn’t deliberately shutting himself down, or focusing on his board meeting poker face, Scott was an open book. To Virgil at least. His expression and the intonation of his voice could provide more detail than the words did.

“It sounds like you made it clear to EOS, it shouldn’t happen again?”

“But that’s not the point. I know now. She’s sick, Virg, and I’m sure it’s something to do with… well… the same as I was. Because of meeting me. What if I made her dig all that stuff up but she doesn’t have a… a you to keep her sane while she figures it out?”

Scott paced, gesticulating wildly, and Virgil caught his arm as he passed, pulling him in for a hug. His brother was trembling with pent up energy.

“Well first off, well done for not leaping in a plane and rushing to try to fix her.”

His brother let out an explosive laugh. “You know me so well.” A pause, then more quietly “I really want to. But I know that would be weird and counter-productive. I just feel so…” he sagged “Responsible. I can’t just ignore this. I can’t just abandon her!”

“I don’t think you have to.” He pulled back a little to look up into his brother’s face. “Scott, when you were struggling but not ready to talk to us, what helped?”

“Hugs.”

Virgil squeezed him a little tighter. “What else?”

Scott broke away to recommence the pacing, palming the miniature rubix cube Virgil kept handy for him on a shelf and rattling through the algorithm to solve it. Reaching the far end of the room he spun on his heel and met Virgil’s eye.

“Two things I think. Distraction. Things to help me stay grounded. And then… knowing you were there if and when I did want to talk… but you weren’t going to force me.”

Virgil nodded.

“Can you do the same for her?”

The way that board meeting had gone it was a miracle he’d not wrecked this latest one with blood stains. Again.

His comm pinged with a picture message. Unusual… he swiped it open.

The names prop will be the same as their vas XD I am sorry if i am not consistent with names, i kinda want to avoid repeating a lot X's actor/actress and stuff

headcannons time

1# Amber and Sofia's actess loved to try each others accessories. Sometimes thet dragged James' actor into it too

2#Most of the older actors in both Shows are parents themselves or have some good experience working with younger cast, so they often looked after the kids and helped them

3# When the Enchantia royal kids' actors meet Cedric's actor, they askee if he had sleep or if he was ok. He laugh and reassured them he was fine

4# Esteban and Victor's Actors were the pranksters of the cast. They often played pranks on elena and shuriki"s actress through season 2 and the specials. They did got payback when they hid their costumes.

5# they had to use rubber wands for the magic users (specially Cedric) because they kept accidentally breaking them.

6# whenever the villain actors had to be super mean to the kids or teens on a scene, they would Imediately hug them and appologize and make sure they were ok. shuriki's actress hugged and comforted Elena's actress after the dead parent taunt scene. Aimee (Elena's actress) in intreviews mentions it took several tries, but nonetheless she made sure to reassure Jane she was ok, and hug her too knowing it was a taxing scene. As it for this day, shuriki's actress (Jane) has said she hated doing that scene, and specially when Aimee teared up.

7# Sofia mispronouncing Cedric was not planned. The actress messed a few times and they just found it adorable

8# Sometimes Cedric and Greylock's actors get bored and play that they have magic duels

9# Princess Ivy's actress let Amber's actress try her wig. She often acted like a big sister outside cameras and had a hard time at the "curse of princess Ivy" episode since the girls found her costume to look awesome

10# its very awkward to do a scene with the animal figures as they will animate them later. So, Cedric's actor often took Wormwood figurine and just playfully crawed at Sofia's actress or any of the kids. They giggled

11# shuriki's actress is a mom herself (Lucinda's actress is her daughter. I am aeare her cannon mom is another one but this au Jane, shuriki's actress takes multiple roles. So please bear with me XD) so she's actually really good with kids in irl. She calls them Luv and kiddos

12# Francisco and Luisa's actors are married in real life. He often flirts with his wife :D

13# The kids have a fun game with Bailywick's actor where they try to get him to break character.

14# Cedric's actor mentioned he did put a lot of his past struggles into Cedric's character, and that he loved to played him.

15. Roland's actor loves dad jokes

16. James' actor is the most energetic of the trio. He adored whenever he got to have action scenes or move around

17. The friendships that sofia made did remained in irl. The girls are such good friends, and often hated doing scenes where they fought.

18. Everyone wasn't fully a fan of the jaquin flying scenes. They took the longest to shoot, but there were times when they were fun

19. Shuriki and Elena's actresses love their battles. although Jane wasn't fully a fan of being on the air, she often said that Aimee made it fun as it was like playing with her kids

20. The best part of the kids was always dressing up in their numerous gowns. Amber and Sofia"s actresses often asked if they could shoot longer on them.

21. Mateo's actor clumsiness and awkwardness fit in as the guy is kinda awkward and shy too. However, he built amazing friendships and Stuff.

22. Isabel"s actress (Jena) is actually on the Spectrum, she adored playing Isa as she could relate a lot

23. During the Outside scenes in the sun, the teens got bored and decided to play soccer and Ola Ball

24. Sometimes when they were bored after shooting, both Elena and shuriki"s team (actors and actresses) decided to play the hockey pockey or never have i ever. Why? Well mostly they recorded outiside and it was hot, so off costumes they wanted to kill time

25. Ash's actress (Grey) and Victor’s actor (Lou) refused to shoot their argument scenes with any of the kids present. They didn't want to let them experience it although it was acting.

26. Fiero"s actor is a chill and cool guy. He had the time of his life when he was shooting his battle scenes. He was kinda like a cool uncle

27. No one. NO ONE told Jane or Aimee about the Shuriki"s mask in "song of the sirenas) they thought they were Carnival masks. This was a fun and elaborated prank from the team to ease up the stress and have a fun farewell as Jane had to leave due to busy schedules. She yelled and Imediately broke character. Aimee legit was weirded out. Both were fabergasted to learn the masks were staying up. Aimee said "It was interesting to shoot it" and Jane said "I had to pull a straight face ignoring my co worker was wearing that thing on. It was cursed)

28. Esteban"s actor nearly dropped out as Esreban did enfuriate him in the early episodes. After he was told more the secret and his character he decided to stay and add his spin

La Buena Semilla

Hola, quisiera compartir con usted el texto del 9 marzo 2024 del calendario “La Buena Semilla”.

Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia. (Mateo 5:7)

Misericordioso y clemente es el Señor; lento para la ira, y grande en misericordia. (Salmo 103:8)

Ser misericordioso es mirar al otro, al prójimo, al que sufre o al que me hace sufrir, con la misma mirada de Dios, es decir, con Su bondad. Pero la misericordia no es solo una actitud interior, sino que se traduce en hechos concretos. Dar de comer al hambriento, dar de beber al sediento, acoger al extranjero, visitar a los presos y a los enfermos… esta es la misericordia en acción. Tampoco olvidemos las obras de misericordia menos visibles: aconsejar a los que dudan, enseñar, exhortar a los que se dejan dominar por el mal, consolar a los que lloran, interceder por todos los hombres…

Lo sorprendente de esta bienaventuranza es la correlación que presenta entre nuestra experiencia y la acción de Dios. Es como si Dios nos tratara de la misma manera que nosotros tratamos a los demás. De hecho, encontramos esta correlación en muchas de las palabras de Jesús. Por ejemplo: “Perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros perdonamos a nuestros deudores” (Mateo 6:12). Dios quiere que reproduzcamos su carácter, y por eso nos capacita para que actuemos con los demás como él lo hizo con nosotros. Pero cuidado, ser misericordiosos no nos hace merecedores de la misericordia de Dios. ¡Nuestra misericordia es el resultado de la gracia de Dios! El apóstol Pablo solía repetir: “Fui recibido a misericordia” (1 Timoteo 1:13, 16).

“Sed… misericordiosos, perdonándoos unos a otros, como Dios también os perdonó a vosotros en Cristo. Sed, pues, imitadores de Dios como hijos amados” (Efesios 4:32-5:1).
