NEGATIVE TRAITS

-Claire's past and experiences have led her to be inconsiderate of herself, and those closest to her tend to see it for how expressive she is, without needing her to be alone to show how she really feels. she is a woman with a thousand complexes, her self-esteem has been destroyed and under her feet. She can't be really sure about anything she does especially if it affects those around her too. SUMMARY OF HER STORY (STILL NOT SO DONE)

It is not known for certain where Claire and her twin brother Dmitry were born, it is only known that they came to light somewhere hidden in the United States of America.

Raised in the hostile environment of the foundation but with the loving care of their mother Mandy Ross, a former nurse in the US Navy. Their father? Locked in the same site where they were born, metal walls separating this potentially dangerous man due to the toxic, potentially lethal nature of his body.

In the early years of their lives, the twins immediately reveal themselves as curious troublemakers, always looking for other children like them to socialize with and will end up bonding closely with one of them in particular: Ira Watts, whom they will consider for life as a brother.

Mandy, for reasons still unknown to them, decides to leave them and the foundation to join the GOC. it was this event that unleashed in her an immense fear of abandonment. Left to their own devices, Claire was the one she had to mature early to take care of her two brothers.

At just 14, the three were separated by the foundation to be introduced to their respective careers.

While Dmitry continued his medical and psychiatric studies, Claire had to stay on that site with Ira to begin her training to join one of the mobile task forces.

''Mobile Task Forces (MTFs) are elite units comprised of personnel drawn from across the Foundation and are mobilized to deal with specific threats or situations that sometimes exceed the operational capacity or expertise of regular field personnel and — as their name suggests — may be relocated between facilities or locations as they are needed. Mobile Task Force personnel represent the "best of the best" of the Foundation.''

And with this clarification, let's say that the training Claire had to undergo was hard and exhausting. She pushed to her limits so many times by her serious and rigid mentor that she was assigned to reach high, real high expectations.

To be ''the best of the best'' she had to shed all of her blood and her will. She failed many times but thanks to this she also managed to learn from her mistakes and correct herself, perhaps becoming probably one of the best students on the site...if not for her rebelious behavior.

Training wasn't Claire's only focus in those years: she was studying biology and virology because of the task force she decided to join, the beta-7. Her knowledge will prove to be fundamental in the future.

Her training and studies ended as soon as they began. At just 22, claire was already serving as a member of mobile task force beta-7 at a different site.

During her years at the site, now with her brother Dmitry, the two were approached by a man from the Internal Security Department (ISD) who was determined to recruit them as they were loyal members of the foundation. The two naively accepted and it was that meeting and that assignment that led them to site 5c where they still reside nowdays.

Andrew was a young African-American man with short, curly black hair, a matching beard, and black eyes. At the time of his death, he wore a crimson-and-black suit over a white long-sleeved shirt with a blue patterned necktie, black dress pants, and polished black shoes. He also had a golden monocle on his left eye, and a golden pocket watch was tucked into his vest pocket.

When working for the Grimsborough PD, he wore a standard police uniform.

As per his suspect appearance in Worst of Wives and Worst of Women, it is known that Andrew exercised.

Synopsis

Andrew was the victim in Murder From The Past.

Before appearing as a victim, he was a suspect in the murder of Renée Murphy. He was a rookie officer in the GBPD with dreams of one day moving to Concordia to become a detective like his ancestor Issac Bontemps. He first met Renée when he responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at Adalet’s house. He found the Lieutenant and Will trying to get Renée to leave, but the woman was drunk and wouldn't listen. Andrew eventually managed to get her into his squad car with Adalet’s help and brought Renée back to her hotel room after Adalet chose not to press charges.

The second time Andrew dealt with Renée was after he responded to reports of her trespassing on private property in Maple Heights. The owners of the properties denied knowing the woman and wanted her arrested. But Renée tried to buy her way out of the charges, writing Andrew a $10,000 cheque to look the other way.

But Andrew refused to accept the bribe and began the process of charging Renée for her crimes. But the woman would never serve any time for trespassing as she would be killed before Andrew could lock her up. Andrew was happy to see justice being served but was sad that Adalet lost two of her loved ones because of it, even if her “mother” was an absolute bitch.

During the additional investigation for that case, Chief King ordered Jones and John to make sure Andrew hadn’t accepted any other bribes. Andrew admitted that Renée had sent him another cheque for $10,000 but claimed he left it on Adalet’s desk for her to deal with. After finding the cheque and having Alex analyze it, they discovered that Andrew had cashed it into the GBPD’s account as a donation from Renée. Andrew thought if the woman was willing to pay the police to try and escape prison, his station might as well benefit from the money. It was later transferred into the GBPD’s funding for the local children’s charity drive.

Jumping forward a couple of years, Andrew had moved to Concordia and was on his way to becoming a detective. Before moving, he met Reese Rochester through an online dating site. The two hit it off, and sparks flew as they bonded over shared interests and different ones. When Andrew arrived at Concordia, Reese was there to greet him at the airport with a welcome sign and hug.

After settling into his new life, Andrew decided to join Concordia’s Flying Squad Preservation Society. He had always been fascinated by his family history with the Squad and wanted to do his part to keep their memory alive. That is why he volunteered for the Flying Squad Museum Committee and worked alongside other descendants and historical experts to create a museum aboard the Flying Squad’s airship.

Of course, nothing could ever go smoothly, and countless problems arose during the months the committee worked on the museum. But they worked together to overcome the challenges and see their vision come to life. Sadly, Andrew wouldn’t live to see that vision become complete; he was murdered aboard the very airship they were working to convert into a museum.

In the weeks leading to his death, Andrew accidentally annoyed a few of his fellow committee members. First, he lost the order form for Alessia Dupont’s supplies for her inventions, delaying her work. But he made it up to her by getting the shipment expedited, so she got it ahead of schedule.

Then, he knocked over Orlando’s glass of wine when delivering some rolls of fabric to the designer. The wine stained the newly finished trench coat and caused Orlando to have to remake that section of the jacket. With so much pressure on the man to complete the replicas in time, Andrew decided to keep his distance to avoid further damage.

Lastly, when Andrew was babysitting Sara for Flora, he turned away for a second, giving the little girl enough time to dunk one of her mother’s figurines in a jar of red paint. Andrew tried to clean up the doll before Flora got home, but it was impossible to get the paint off. Flora was already very stressed, so after yelling at Andrew, she ordered him to leave before anything else got ruined.

His friends would later apologize for getting angry at him, and Andrew would forgive them, knowing that all the stress they were under was what caused them to snap.

Outside of the committee, Andrew faced a couple more issues. The first was when he discovered that his partner, Reese, wanted to propose to him. He was pleasantly surprised when he found the ring they had gotten for him, but he told them he wasn’t sure if he was ready for marriage. Reese respected his choice and promised to wait until he was ready to formally ask him to marry them.

The other problem he ran into was when Justine Dawson submitted a request to have one of her ancestors featured in the Flying Squad’s museum. He denied the request because that ancestor had done horrible things when he was alive, and he wasn’t even a member of the Flying Squad! While some non-members were featured in aspects of the museum, none of them had exhibits dedicated to them; those were reserved for official members only.

It would be this last altercation that would lead to Andrew’s death. Justine was furious at him denying her request, believing her family deserved to be honoured for their work on Concordia. Her rage was heightened by the fact that Issac Bontemps had killed her ancestor, and she hated how the Flying Squad, their families, and their descendants got to live happily ever after while hers had to suffer shame and ridicule. She vowed to avenge her family’s honour and get revenge for her ancestor’s untimely death.

So, Justine stalked Andrew for weeks to learn his habits and schedule to find the perfect time and place to kill him. And that place would be aboard the airship. She snuck in after him and drew her weapon. Andrew pleaded for her not to kill him, but Justine refused to listen. She pulled the trigger, killing him with the same gun that Issac had used to kill her ancestor.

Andrew couldn't believe Justine would kill him over an old family feud and a one-sided rivalry at that! But he was happy to see justice being served for his murder and Justine imprisoned for life. Maybe it was selfish of him to be happy to see her get sent to rot in prison, but she did the crime, so now she needed to do the time.

And while Justine spent the rest of her life in prison, Andrew would spend his time in the afterlife, finally able to meet the ancestor and Flying Squad he had heard so much about.

Dating a 70s Telecaster

I happened to see the above guitar, a late 70s Telecaster, listed on craigslist for what seemed to be an excellent price. I jumped at the chance to pick it up but given the nature of Fender guitars and the used guitar market, I wanted to make sure it was completely legit. There are a few things to look for and I figured it would be useful to document them here.

The Serial Number

The most obvious way to check the age of a guitar is by inspecting the serial number. Unfortunately, this is also one of the least reliable as Fender used numbers that span years and can at best give you a general idea of the date. Also, depending on the guitar style the serial number may be stamped on the metal neck plate, which can be easily counterfeited.

For a mid to late 70s Telecaster, the serial is going to be stamped on the headstock. You can use this to narrow down the date range using any number of serial number lookup sites online. Oddly the official Fender lookup site is usually the least useful, especially when dealing with older guitars. For this guitar one of the main sites returned the following:

This narrows it down to three possibilities. Based on the decal design and the Made in USA marking, it's likely that this guitar was produced in 1978 at the Fullerton plant. But we can get more specific - and rule out a reproduction decal or fake serial number.

Further Inspection

At this point you need to start taking the guitar apart. Fender guitars usually have date markings and sometimes assembly notation in the body cavities and the end of the neck. The guitar was set up pretty well to begin with, so I didn't want to pull the neck unless I needed to. Ultimately I didn't, but you can still see the markings on the neck that give you a pretty good idea of the date on the neck by looking at the route above the neck pickup.

You can also see pretty typical wear in the finish that would be indicative of how a guitar like this would age. Most of the instrument is in great shape but when the pickguard comes off you can see a few spots where finish chipped and you can see the difference in the fading of the finish where it was not covered by the guard below.

The next thing to check are the date codes on the potentiometers in the control panel. Fender guitars generally used CTS pots and they all carry date codes that tell you the month that the pot was manufactured. As the guitar was built, the neck, body, bridge, pickups and electronics were all pulled from stock at the factory. You can use the dates on individual parts to get a better idea of when the guitar would have come off the line or at least an idea of a date before which it couldn't have.

You can see the code on the side of the pot here. A 137-7842. This decodes as follows:

A = Analog Taper

137 = The company code for CTS

7842 = Manufactured in 1978, during the 42nd week of the year

A quick check of a calendar means that this pot was part of a batch produced between October 16 and 22. This means the guitar can be no older than late October/early November of 1978. Because we're already up against the serial number date range, we can say with high confidence that this guitar came from the factory just in time for the holidays in 1978.

Additional things to note are the correct wiring style and switch for the period along with a correct capacitor in the tone circuit.

Also of note, was that the pickguard is likely to be original as it still has a matching serial number sticker on it. These stickers weren't something Fender used all the time and it's rare that you'd see someone try to counterfeit one, especially on a relatively unassuming model and year.

With the evidence mounting that this was a legit Fender and the providence fairly clear I opted to not pull the neck, or bridge. The corrosion on the bridge pickup was correct for the era and overall condition of the guitar and even the screws on the pickups look like they had never been touched since it left the factory outside of minor height adjustments. Also, I bought this guitar to play and keep so it was a case of "good enough for me."

#7 - Marshmallow's Last Stand

Date: January 2000

And so, we finally come to our first real toon, Marshmallow's Last Stand. A toon that, while having aged like a warm glass of suudsu, also did a lot to shape the series into what it is today.

In the toon, Homestar and Pom Pom are eating a nice fluffity and puffity meal at a diner, when the 2/3rds of the brothers strong, Strong Bad and Strong Mad show up to challenge them to a tag-team wrestling match.

After they politely decline, Strong Bad steals the star from Homestar's shirt, forcing him to fight in the ring to get it back. Fortunately, Homestar wins the fight, blowing up Strong Bad's head in the process.

A pretty basic storyline, which works in the toon's favor.

We also get to hear the voices of both Homestar and Strong Bad for the first time, with Homestar speaking in a slower, albeit still impediment'd style, and Strong Bad with a heavy Hispanic accent, which he'd keep all the way until the advent of the Strong Bad Emails.

Not to mention a few more notable first appearances, with our first looks at Marzipan, the only girl character (for now), The King of Town, the possible self-proclaimed leader of Free Country, USA, and his Poopsmith, known as... the Poopsmith. You can guess what he does. They don't speak in this one, but it's definitely neat to see them.

Now, onto the bad.

First up, the toon isn't very funny, which TBC would admit in a warning added to the toon later on. There aren't really any jokes that'd make you laugh, besides possibly the exaggerated voices.

Next up, the animation.

Now, it's mostly fine, especially for their first animation. It can get a bit janky at times, but for two random brothers who were only a few years out of college, it's definitely passable. However, during the early years of the site, TBC were known to have a computer that was... less than ideal. This would lead to colors being off, characters that were supposed to be obscured by shadow being visible, and worst of all, desync.

Due to the computer they were using at the time, by the end of the toon, the audio is around a full second off from the video.

Due to these factors, and the fact the toon isn't even available on the site anymore, Marshmallow's Last Stand isn't something that I revisit too particularly often.

Oh, did I not mention that?

Yeah, at some point around 2001 or so, the toon, as well as a later one we'll be looking at soon, was taken off the site for reasons that have never really been publicly disclosed.

One interview with Mike & Matt says that the reason the toon was removed was due to Homestar and Strong Bad being out of character, but a later interview said that it was due to "personal reasons".

Welp, whatever the real reason was, Marshmallow's Last Stand is, while a very influential toon to the series, also something where you won't miss out on too much if you skip.
