Edmund de Waal (British, b. 1964)

Edmund de Waal is a British artist and story teller who creates multitudes of ceramic vessels and displays them in shallow shelves or encased in modern, sleek cabinets. These delicate displays seem almost spiritual, each piece portraying the human hand in its form, slightly irregular, perfectly imperfect.

Each piece is unique, and when combined, create a sense of unity amongst their differences. There is a beauty in all things being flawed, and no two the same. The grouping and spacing of the ceramic vestiges reads like a sheet of music, notes gathered together and breaks in the melody to allow pause.

De Waal's work 'Breathturn I-IV' (2013) is made up of four aluminium cabinets with shallow shelves and house hundreds of hand cast ceramic 'sagemono', small, traditional vessels that were fastened to the Japanese mans kimono with a 'netsuke', a carved, button like fastener. 'Netsuke' were handcrafted and could be highly individual to the wearer. This style of dress originates from 17th Century Japan and were a way of carrying personal items such as pipes, tobacco and money, before pockets were later sewn into clothing.

De Waal was gifted his great uncle Iggy's collection of 'netsuke' when he passed away, and upon further research, De Waal uncovered his remarkable family history that inspired his book The Hare with Amber Eyes: a hidden inheritance (2010).
