Dev_Blog Cat Collect

Cat Collect is a hyper casual endless fishing type side scroller game designed for mobile devices that is mechanically easy to operate.

Development Process_

I first began on a prototype of the games mechanics using place holder objects to build the core mechanics of the game. 

After this I went onto implementing all of the confirmed assets replacing the place holder assets.

The end result of this game has a few issues with the audio and I have ideas on how to make a lighter functioning gameplay, but due to time I did not apply these things.

Background_

  The first step I began on was creating an endless scene that randomly spawned terrain and obstacles in your path, but also had the ability to reverse the scene all the way back to the beginning each time. 

 I made the player stationary in the scene and the background is the thing moving to give the effect of the player descending and ascending. 

 I did this by making an empty game object that had environment and obstacle spawn scripts that randomly spawn objects in its components. The empty object also was moving continuously in the set direction and changed to the opposite direction when ascending. 

Obstacles_ 

The obstacles in this game were the bats and cats. The bats were an obstruction to the player trying to descend further and would knock cats off on the way up.

 The cats are a goal when ascending but an obstruction when descending. When the player touches a cat, the cat will attach itself to the player, then if an attached cat touches a spike or a bat on ascension it will be knocked back off of the player.

Game Master_ 

This script holds all of the values for what cats you have unlocked, the levels of your equipment, top scores and your currency count. 

 The cat collection book works by, when you finish a play the game manager collects data from the parented cats to the player registering if any of the cats are a new find, then setting them to found thus unlocking them in the cat dairy. 

 The level of equipment functions through an integer, the value of the integer increases every time you can level up. 

When in game the integer level of the equipment will activate the corresponding object to that level. All of the data on the game manager script is auto saved using player prefabs. 

I used player prefabs to store and save data as it is a built in function that all unity games have.

Player_

 The player on touch moves towards the mouse cursor position locked in the y transform, so the player only can move sideways to avoid and grab objects.

Upgrades_

  The Light upgrade uses a post processor, depending on the level of you light will determine how much of the screen is visible to you.

 also the helmet on Rescue Ryan changes as an indicator to what level light you are using. 

 The Cat Magnet pulls cats towards the player when ascending up the cave, making it easier to collect more cats.

 The magnet works by a collider radius, when a cat is in that radius it will begin to move towards the player. Different levels of the cat magnet have a larger pull radius and also the magnet object changes in indication of what level of equipment you are using.

I decided to watch Lego Batman Movie (again) and I’ve realized something.

This movie is said to break many things about Batman to their barest essentials, and Joker’s obssession with Batman is the best example of it.

However, look at this scene:

This picture is supposed to indicate that Alfred Pennyworth kind of thinks of Bruce as a child (a rather petulant one, for that measure), and I think it is indictive of how post-Crisis Alfred perceives his charge.

Now, someone once pointed out that “Master_” form is reserved for children (sorry for this version of the link; the orignal was gone on the OP’s blog), and I think Alfred calls Batman that, because he was taking care of Bruce even before Waynes’ murder and for Alfred Bruce will always be that little boy who’s diapers he was changing.

To some extend the butler’s deadpanning also resembles a parent, who’s tired of their teen’s “edgy” phase but goes along with it, always reminding them to eat and sleep.

But Alfred - just like any other parent - is worried about Bruce. Worried about his social life, about his sleep schedule, about his eating habits, and about his lifestyle in general.

And we get to see all of this in Lego Batman Movie.
