This weekend I had an #artstudio visitor who wanted to explore a #seascape... And the #paintings of #JMWTurner! Quite an ambitious beginning hahaha... I mean, he's considered a (#British and #ArtHistory) #masterofpainting (still the most loved), his paintings a precursor and reference to the #impressionist freedom from rigidity, especially in his use of light. So we googled Turner and found a seascape we both liked. I think it's a lesser known one as I couldn't find it again easily, but I admire the #composition, the use of the orangey browns for the ships, and the mix of blues and earth colours too. So we looked at the painting, and imagined how he would have painted it. Which colours would be most prominent. And here are the beginnings of what we painted. I wouldn't call this a traditional exercise in painting at all... If you want to learn to paint, this is breaking the traditional rules. it's more #expressive, quick; going with the flow. I'm trying to find out how long Turner took on each painting (looking at his art I'd guess many hours or days, rather than weeks or months beginning to end - unless you count the drying time between his oil paint layers). We painted for about half an hour; for this sort of thing sometimes it is more important to me to enjoy the #processofpainting, the outcome is a by-product of the discovery. Try to ignore Turner's title, if you can, which I discovered today or else I may have chosen a different Turner to paint😅🤣😅...It's like it's foretelling these (#political) times we live in...
