I made a post a while ago where I briefly mentioned that I think the craftmasters would all be good friends, and so would Halt and they would hang out together a lot and now because nobody asked and I'm bored, I'm gonna say what I think Halt's relationships with the different craftmasters would be.
Pauline: Their relationship is kind of fucking obvious. I don't need to say anything
Rodney: I think they'd get a long quite well. It was mentioned in the second book that Rodney considered Halt to be a friend. They'd probably sometimes fight a little bit, but generally I think they'd be good friends.
Arald: They are definitely great friends even if it doesn't always seem like it. They definitely annoy each other a lot, and they definitely have had many arguments, but I don't think there's a single person of authority that Halt hasn't had an argument with so that's to be expected. @iwanttobepersephone said once that she thinks Arald are Halt are great friends and Arald is really supportive and kind of like a father but also isn't to Halt and I love this idea so much so that is now true and no one can change my mind. Well done Kore, you have written new canon
Chubb: I feel like Halt and Chubb probably have the most fights and disagreements. You can't tell me Halt isn't a fucking little shit to Chubb in the kitchen or any other time. So most of the time they're arguing about something stupid, but they do actually care about each other, and they can sometimes have calm, casual conversations where they actually get along. They seem very brothers-who-fight-a lot-but-actually-love-each-other coded.
Nigel: Nigel is one hundred percent a yapper and won't shut up about things so he sometimes pisses Halt off, but other than that they get along. They have a few things and common and they'll have conversations about those things. I know realistically Halt most likely wouldn't like to read because it would fit with his character to just find it completely boring and pointless, but because these are my headcanons I can do what I want and I'm gonna self project and I'm gonna say he does like to, so Halt and Nigel will just yap to each other about what they're reading.
Ulf: No one fucking remembers this horse man so he doesn't matter. He had like one line of dialogue in the first book and was never bought up again. I wouldn't be surprised if no one remembers him.
Anyways those are my little thoughts. This is all canon in my mind so nothing can change my mind about how these fuckers interact, not even the king Flanny himself.

Master Chubb: It has become so hard lately to purchase ingredients and spices from any of the traders or merchants, they’re always out of stock by the time they reach Redmont
Jennie: Sometimes I loudly talk around Gillian about how difficult it is to get foreign ingredients without traveling and how much I wish I could cook with them regularly so that he’ll go purchase them locally for me. I just don’t like filling order forms.

Life a bit to the left
Chapter Seven:
TW: mentions of vomit and urine
Will was sent from Castle Redmont with a loaf of bread, several links of dried sausage, and the largest grin he’s ever worn. For all of Master Chubb’s grumbling, cooking is clearly the man’s calling. And like any cook, he delighted in seeing Will inhale his food with vigor. The man provided more and more food until Will’s belly was aching and he had to turn down a fourth helping, something he never imagined having to do. But Chubb had apparently taken something of a shine to Will and his appetite, and wrapped up some for Will to bring back home. Will was grateful for the parcel of food, because with each bite he took, there had been a bitter aftertaste of guilt. His father wasn’t living any better than he was. He was no doubt just as hungry, he just didn’t moan about it like Will did. On his walk back, Will vowed to himself that the food he was carrying would be reserved for his father. He wouldn’t touch it, no matter how much his stomach begged for it. He would prove that he wasn’t completely selfish. He’d prove he could be a good son.
As he approached the little cabin, he saw a figure slumped over on the porch. He sighed in relief and picked up his pace. He hadn’t forgotten that his father had been missing this morning when he left, and was glad to see that his father had managed to find his way back home.
“Dad!” He called out. The man didn’t stir. When Will made it up the two crooked steps, he finally got a clear look at his father. His normally disheveled appearance was even worse. Vomit and urine soaked his clothes. His shoes had disappeared and his feet were caked in dried mud. Will looked down at the man and he felt as though he was looking at a stranger. This mess of a man wasn’t his father. It couldn’t be. His father wasn’t this disgusting person drenched in their own filth. Will couldn’t be part of this man, share half of his blood with him.
But he did. He could still see the evidence if he squinted. He saw it in the cut of his jaw. In the chocolate mass of hair that hadn’t been cut in ages. And if those eyes didn’t droop so heavily from liquor, he’d see his own dark eyes staring back at him. Physically, there was no denying this man was in fact his father. And as his son, he was Will’s responsibility.
“Ok dad. Let’s get you cleaned up.” Will squatted down and heaved his father over his shoulders. He nearly toppled over from the weight, but he managed to stay relatively upright as he hobbled around to the back of the house to the rain barrel and washtub. With each step Will could feel his father’s sweat, vomit, and urine bleeding into his own clothes. The smell was enough to roll his stomach and Will fought to keep his lunch down. The rich meal had been a once in a lifetime experience for Will and he refused to lose it before it could be digested.
He let his father fall into the tub and rolled his aching shoulders back, before working on removing his father’s soiled clothes. With the state they were in, they should just be tossed, or better yet, burned, but Will was out of a job and didn’t know when or how he'd find a new one, so once he was finished cleaning his father up, he’d have to find a way to clean his shirt and trousers as well. As for the missing shoes, Will hadn’t a clue how he’d find the funds to replace them.
He talked his way through washing his dad, letting him know beforehand everything he was doing to avoid spooking him. The entire time, his father remained silent, his eyes dark, empty wells. Will wrapped him in a ragged bath sheet and guided him into the house. Thankfully the bath had sobered him up enough that he was able to carry at least some of his own weight. Will laid him on his bed and pulled the quilt up to his chest. Remembering the food Master Chubb had packed for him, Will tore off a small chunk of bread and gave it to his father, who immediately began nibbling at it.
“Try to keep it down dad, it’s too good to waste.” Will whispered. He sat beside him until the sky outside the window was a flaming orange. His father had nodded off every now and then throughout the afternoon, but for the most part remained in his usual semi conscious state.
Once Will was convinced his father was probably past the point of being at risk of choking on his own vomit, he said, “I’m going to go try to wash out your clothes. Please stay put.” Will could hear the weariness in his own voice, heavy and empty. He thought of how different it sounded in comparison to the baron’s wards, who had sounded so young and confident. Will just sounded defeated.
He stood, his knees popping after spending so long kneeling on the rough wooden floorboards. As he turned away, he felt a hand wrapped around his wrist. But rather than the usual bruising grip that he had come to associate with his father’s touch, it was gentle, almost hesitant. Will looked down at his father, and was shocked to find tears running slowly down his scruffy cheeks.
“Dad?”
“Tan-k oo.” The words came out slurred and stuttered, but the message was still clear.
A lump formed in Will’s throat as he thickly said, “Of course. I love you dad. I will always take care of you.”
“Ovu oo too.”
The hand retreated back under the blankets as fast as it had appeared, and the blank look returned to his father’s eyes. If the moment hadn’t already etched itself into Will’s mind and heart, he would have thought he had imagined it. But he didn’t. Will swallowed and wiped at his watery eyes before leaving the room.
As he scrubbed at the filthy clothes outside, Will promised himself that he’d remember today. He’d remember that his father is still there. That somewhere, buried beneath the hard layers of grief and fear and paranoia, his father was still alive. It had been ages since Will had gotten a glimpse of him, so long in fact, that Will had found himself doubting his existence. But today he got proof. And he just had to hold on to that moment when times got tough. His father was still with him and he loved Will. He appreciated him. Bread and sausages were great, but those few, nearly unintelligible words from his father would sustain him long after he had forgotten the taste of Chubb’s meal.

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 8 Ep. 151: Big Kids and Tiny Cats
The family had lost one beloved pet but was gaining three toddlers as the infant cousins prepared to age up.
Tori and Toni came over to the house early for one final baby playdate before they all headed off to the indoor fun park to celebrate the birthdays.
While Peachy was busy in the kitchen crafting a special cake with love, Jack entertained the ladies, chatting with Tori about how she and Miguel were adjusting to life on the farm without Steven and Gabby and comparing notes with Toni about the joys of stay-at-home parenthood.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Once the master chef was finished creating his latest delicious treat the group headed out.
The birthday parents had waited until the very last possible moment to age up their little ones and so now that task was first on the agenda. No one wanted to see their precious babies sad because their birthday had been “forgotten” while literally at their own birthday party!
One by one they did the honors, Jack and Luigi going last. He knew that his baby growing up was inevitable, but that didn’t mean he was ready!
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Peachy stood by apprehensively as little Luigi spun around in the air, both men relieved when he landed safely back in his Papa’s arms. Jack was sure the watcher would be pleased to keep the boy’s current hairdo when he saw the neon green streaks in his thick black locks.
Ignoring the three doses of infant spittle that had extinguished Peachy’s delicious confection everyone dug in happily. Jack and Peachy joined Fabian and his girlfriend at a table, congratulating the couple who were on the road to joining their friends in the land of parenthood in the very near future.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
After playing happily with Hunter, Olive and Fern in the enclosed play area for quite awhile Luigi snuck out when one of the adults opened the gate and toddled over to his big cousin Denton who he thought looked lonely standing all by himself in the corner.
Peachy’s sense of humor seemed to have rubbed off on his son. Upon aging up he discovered a strong interest in being silly himself and tried to make his cousin laugh by babbling out one of Dada’s funniest jokes. Denton apparently wasn’t a fan of his comedy, so much so that he hauled off and hit him!
The adults hadn’t seen what happened, but Jack heard his boy wailing and hurried over to scoop him up in a big hug. It was getting late anyway, and the men took that as their que to leave, wishing everyone goodbye before heading back home.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
As soon as they got back and got comfy Peachy told Jack there was one final gift he’d like to give Luigi. The house had no pet with Luna’s passing, Taz having gone with Paul and Nikita to the ranch when they moved. Peachy had arranged for a litter of kittens to come over so Luigi could pick one out.
Jack hadn’t quite been able to bring himself to “replace” his best girl. Peachy framing the adoption as giving their boy a furry playmate to grow up with helped the cat lover sidestep his reservations and dive eagerly into helping introduce the adorable tiny creatures to his own adorable tiny man.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Knowing his husband Peachy had been fully prepared to end up with 3 new household members after their adoption evaluation, but one of the furballs surprised them all by taking an instant dislike to the cat lover!
The other 2 kittens seemed to get along well with everyone and so in the end the trio welcomed marmalade and Chubbs into their happy little home.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------
Jack gave Peachy a thank you kiss for once again filling their house up with life and love before helping Luigi say goodnight to the kittens and get in bed.
Jack spun his son a fantastic tale about a very special little sim who was his Papa’s, and his Watcher’s, pride and joy. He might not be able to convince his husband of his special status, but he was determined to make sure their son, the next legacy heir, knew exactly who he was.
Luigi would know as much about the secrets of their world as his papa could tell him, and while Jack knew he might not believe everything he hoped that the facts he did accept would help him find his way and better navigate through the interesting life he was bound to lead.

I love getting to ask you about books because you've always got something interesting to talk about!
For the end-of-year book ask: 2, 3, 6, 15 & 18.

2. Did you reread anything? What?
i did reread volume 4 of mdzs twice before volume 5 came out because i didn't know what to do with myself while i waited. i meant to reread the letter by walter somerset maugham but never got around to it
3. What were your top five books of the year?
hmmm i usually make a list the last days of december but for now i'd say the layover by lacie waldon, the master and margarita by mikhail bulgakov, the makioka sisters by tanizaki junichiro, the mercies by kiran millwood hargrave and of course dial a for aunties by jesse q sutanto. but i also loved here lived nefertiti by mary chubb and love for lydia by h e bates.
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
yes! tons! to live by yu hua has been sitting in my shelf for a year or so 🫣 last winter i wanted to read doctor zhivago but then i never did. and i bought it last month so i thought somewhere this month i'd fit it in but then i put a hold on war and peace in the library and it's coming next week so i guessed it'd be just too much russian lit all together so i'm waiting a bit on dr zhivago 😅
15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?
i have no idea let me check. i did read half of a yellow sun by chimamanda ngozi adichie, that won the women's prize in 2007, and absolutely loved it (though i had a hard time reading it!)
18. How many books did you buy?
omg too many! counting only physical copies because i've definitely bought lots of ebooks too: 28 i think, though a couple i might have bought in 2022? cant' remember 🙃

Eurt si em tuoba yas yeht gnihtyrevE
Euphoria
Them superpowers getting neutralized, I can only watch in silence
The famous actor we once knew is lookin' paranoid and now spiralin'
You're movin' just like a degenerate, every antic is feelin' distasteful
I calculate you're not as calculated, I can even predict your angle
Fabricating stories on the family front 'cause you heard Mr. Morale
A pathetic master manipulator, I can smell the tales on you now
You're not a rap artist, you a scam artist with the hopes of being accepted
Tommy Hilfiger stood out, but FUBU never had been your collection
I make music that electrify 'em, you make music that pacify 'em
I can double down on that line, but spare you this time, that's random acts of kindness
Know you a master manipulator and habitual liar too
But don't tell no lie about me and I won't tell truths 'bout you
Shoo, shoo, shoo
Shoo, shoo, shoo
Bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee
Yeah, I'm out the way, yeah, I'm low, okay
Yeah, the island right here's remote, okay
I ain't thinkin' about no reaper
Nigga, I'm reapin' what I sow, okay
Got a Benjamin and a Jackson all in my house like I'm Joe, okay
Hellcat, made his homeboys and them type sell they soul, okay
Everybody wanna be demon 'til they get chipped by your throwaway
And I might do a show a day, once a lame, always a lame
Oh, you thought the money, the power or fame would make you go away?
Have you ever played have-you-ever? Okay, nigga, let's play
Have you ever walked your enemy down like with a poker face?
Have you ever paid five hundred thou' like to an open case?
Well, I have, and I failed at both, but I came out straight
I hate when a rapper talk about guns, then somebody die
They turn into nuns, then hop online, like "Pray for my city"
He fakin' for likes and digital hugs
His daddy a killer, he wanna be junior, they must've forgot the shit that they done
Dementia must run in his family, but let it get shaky
I'll park your son
The very first time I shot me a Drac', the homie had told me to aim it this way
I didn't point down enough, today, I'll show you I learned from those mistakes
Somebody had told me that you got a ring, on God, I'm ready to double the wage
I'd rather do that than let a Canadian nigga make Pac turn in his grave
Cutthroat business, you got shit twisted
What is it? The braids?
I hurt your feelings? You don't wanna work with me no more? Okay
It's three G.O.A.T.s left, and I seen two of them kissin' and huggin' on stage
I love 'em to death, and in eight bars, I'll explain that phrase, huh
It's nothin' nobody can tell me, huh
I don't wanna talk on no celly, huh
You know I got language barriers, huh
It's no accent you can sell me, huh
Yeah, Cole and Aubrey know I'm a selfish nigga, the crown is heavy, huh
I pray they my real friends, if not, I'm YNW Melly
I don't like you poppin' shit at Pharrell, for him, I inherit the beef
Yeah, fuck all that pushin' P, let me see you push a T
You better off spinnin' again on him, you think about pushin' me
He's Terrence Thornton, I'm Terence Crawford, yeah, I'm whoopin' feet
We ain't gotta get personal, this a friendly fade, you should keep it that way
I know some shit about niggas that make Gunna Wunna look like a saint
This ain't been about critics, not about gimmicks, not about who the greatest
It's always been about love and hate, now let me say I'm the biggest hater
I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress
I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it's gon' be direct
We hate the bitches you fuck, 'cause they confuse themself with real women
And notice, I said "we, " it's not just me, I'm what the culture feelin'
How many more fairytale stories 'bout your life 'til we had enough?
How many more Black features 'til you finally feel that you're Black enough?
I like Drake with the melodies, I don't like Drake when he act tough
You gon' make a nigga bring back Puff, let me see if Chubbs really crash somethin'
Yeah, my first one like my last one, it's a classic, you don't have one
Let your core audience stomach that, then tell 'em where you get your abs from
V12, it's a fast one, baow-baow-baow, last one
Headshot for the year, you better walk around like Daft Punk
Remember?
Ayy, Top Dawg, who the fuck they think they playin' with?
Extortion my middle name as soon as you jump off of that plane, bitch
I'm allergic to the lame shit, only you like bein' famous
Yachty can't give you no swag neither, I don't give a fuck 'bout who you hang with
I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress
Surprised you wanted that feature request
You know that we got some shit to address
I even hate when you say the word "nigga, " but that's just me, I guess
Some shit just cringeworthy, it ain't even gotta be deep, I guess
Still love when you see success, everything with me is blessed
Keep makin' me dance, wavin' my hand, and it won't be no threat
I'm knowin' they call you The Boy, but where is a man? 'Cause I ain't seen him yet
Matter fact, I ain't even bleed him yet, can I bleed him? Bet
When I see you stand by Sexyy Red, I believe you see two bad bitches
I believe you don't like women, it's real competition, you might pop ass with 'em
Let's speak on percentage, show me your splits, I'll make sure I double back with you
You were signed to a nigga that's signed to a nigga that said he was signed to that nigga
Try cease and desist on the "Like That" record?
Hoe, what? You ain't like that record?
"Back To Back, " I like that record
I'ma get back to that, for the record
Why would I call around tryna get dirt on niggas? Y'all think all my life is rap?
That's hoe shit, I got a son to raise, but I can see you don't know nothin' 'bout that
Wakin' him up, know nothin' 'bout that
And tell him to pray, know nothin' 'bout that
And givin' him tools to walk through life like day-by-day, know nothin' 'bout that
Teachin' him morals, integrity, discipline, listen, man, you don't know nothin' 'bout that
Speakin' the truth and consider what God's considerin', you don't know nothin' 'bout that
Ain't 20-v-1, it's 1-v-20 if I gotta smack niggas that write with you
Yeah, bring 'em out too, I'll clean 'em out too
Tell BEAM that he better stay right with you
Am I battlin' ghost or AI? Nigga feelin' like Joel Hale Osteen
Funny, he was in a film called "AI"
And my sixth sense tellin' me to off him
I'ma blick niggas all in they coffin
Yeah, OV-hoe niggas is dick riders
Tell 'em run to America, they imitate heritage, they can't imitate this violence
What I learned is niggas don't like the West Coast
And I'm fine with it, I'll push the line with it
Pick a nigga off one at a time with it
We can be on a three-hour time difference
Don't speak on the family, crodie
It can get deep in the family, crodie
Talk about me and my family, crodie?
Someone gon' bleed in your family, crodie
I be at New Ho King eatin' fried rice with a dip sauce and blammy, crodie
Tell me you're cheesin', fam
We can do this right now on the camera, crodie
Ayy, fuck y'all niggas, I don't trust y'all niggas
I wave one finger and thump y'all niggas like mmm
Field goal, punt y'all niggas, they punk y'all niggas, nobody never took my food
Whoever that's fuckin' with him, fuck you niggas, and fuck the industry too
If you take it there, I'm takin' it further
Psst, that's somethin' you don't wanna do
Ooh
We don't wanna hear you say "nigga" no more
We don't wanna hear you say "nigga" no more
Stop

Yet more RA headcanons, part 4 I think?
Horace has a favorite training dummy. He named it Alda
Pauline likes to sketch, but rarely does

Life a bit to the left
Chapter Seventeen
The uproarious laughter that poured out of the open door to the infirmary slowed Halt’s pace and calmed his hammering heart. He stood in the doorway and watched as Master Chubb’s apprentice Jenny told a story about Horace and one of the nannies, complete with wild gestures and exaggerated facial expressions. Horace buried his face in his hands, trying to hide his flaming cheeks. Will was propped up on the cot, grinning and laughing along with the rest of the wards. Halt knew that Will wasn’t used to having friends, knew that his first real friend was Tug. And while Halt would be the first to argue the benefits of having a close relationship with one’s horse, he could also concede that a fifteen year old boy should have fifteen year old friends, ideally human ones.
Halt stayed hidden and out of the way until Will’s eyes began to droop and his smile waiver slightly.
“Alright, I think it’s time you lot got back to where you’re expected. It’ll do you no good to slack off during your first year as apprentices.” His low voice caught the group of teenagers off guard. In unison, they startled and jumped, all except Will. He only smirked at his newfound friend’s reactions. He already knew I was there, Halt thought with pride. Despite all the challenges Will has had to face, he was still excelling in his training.
The group of apprentices said their goodbyes with well wishes and promises to visit again in the morning. Once they had cleared out, Halt took the seat Horace had been occupying, the one nearest to Will’s cot.
“I’m glad to see you’re awake.”
Will smiled, “Will you be upset if I fall back asleep soon?”
“I’ll allow it, I suppose.”
Will hummed and let his gaze drift towards the door. “It was nice that they came to see me. But I’m not really sure why they did. Horace makes sense, I guess. He brought me here so…” A yawn cut his sentence off and gave Halt the perfect opportunity to interrupt.
“They came to visit because they were worried about you. Because they want to be friends.”
Will blinked owlishly. “Oh.”
Halt’s hand twitched as he resisted the urge to brush Will’s hair back from where it had flopped over the white bandage the physician had wrapped around his head. “Rest Will. We can talk more about it in the morning.
“Ok.” Will burrowed back into the pillows, but then shot up suddenly hissing as the movement pulled at the burning on his side. “Where’s my dad?”
“He’s safe.”
”Where is he?” Will asked again. His knee began to bend slightly, readying himself to leap out of bed and go chasing after his father, head injury be damned.
“He’s… downstairs.”
“Downstairs?” Will frowned and looked out the window. “I thought we were on the ground floor. Downstairs would be-” Will’s eyes jumped to Halt. “He’s in the dungeon!”
“He’s safe there Will. No one’s going to hurt him, and he’s not able to hurt anyone else.”
“He’s not a criminal, he’s sick.” Will pushed back the sheet that had been dropped over him and stood. He instantly swayed back and forth, like a sapling in a storm. Halt took hold of him and lowered him back to the cot.
“You need to calm down, Will. Please just rest.”
Will made an attempt to push Halt’s hands off of him, but his resistance lacked any real strength. The adrenaline from worry about his father was draining just as fast as it had arrived. “Let me go,” He whined, “I need to see him.”
“No you don’t. I was just down there, he’s fine.”
“I have to-”
“Don’t you trust me Will? After everything, don’t you trust me to tell you the truth?” Halt knew it wasn’t exactly fair, guilting Will like this, but he needed Will to stop fighting him and rest.
“Of course I trust you, Halt. I just,” Will deflated into the bed. “He’s my dad, he’s my responsibility.”
“And you’re mine. So why don’t you let me take care of him for you while you focus on recovering. I promise I won’t let anything happen to him.”
“You promise?” Will’s eyes were falling again and he sounded impossibly young.
“I promise.” Halt squeezed his shoulder.
“Ok, ok, I trust you.” Will’s words were a whisper as he drifted off to sleep.
And as much as Halt would like to be the one to bring harm to Daniel, he knew that there was nothing in this world that would cause Halt to break his promise to Will.

Lady Pauline knew Alyss well. She had mentored the girl for years prior to her Choosing Day. They had spent countless hours working side by side. So when she looked over at the girl, who had been staring at the same document for the better part of half an hour, she knew there was something weighing on her apprentice’s mind.
“Alyss.”
The girl’s head shot up, causing several strands of silver blonde hair to drop from the pin that had been holding them in place.
“Yes?”
“Put that down and come tell me what’s bothering you.” She gestured for Alyss to sit beside her. Alyss dropped the parchment onto her tidy desk and joined Pauline on the settee.
“So?” Pauline asked with a raised brow.
Alyss slumped back. “I can’t stop thinking about Will.” She said softly.
“Oh. I see.” Pauline cleared her throat. “I suppose I can understand, I was young once, and he’s cute in a boyish way-”
Alyss’ face flushes, “No! Not like that!”
Pauline is relieved to hear that. She was never the type of woman who was comfortable gossiping about crushes and which boy liked which girl and why it mattered. Though, Pauline was observant enough to recognize that while Alyss may not mean it that way at the moment, her speedy protest might be indicative of underlying feelings.
“Alright dear, then how do you mean?”
“I just, I feel bad for him. He’s lost everything he owns. The ward never felt particularly homey, but my things were mine. I can’t imagine losing it all in one moment.” Alyss thumbed at the cuff of her sleeve. “And I don’t even understand how it happened! I asked Will and he just shut down. He wouldn’t look at any of us or say anything until Jenny changed the subject.” Alyss turned her attention from her dress to Pauline. “Do you know how the fire started? Have you heard anything from Ranger Halt or Rodney?”
Pauline had in fact learned what happened, and it wasn’t exactly something she wished to share, especially with her young and still somewhat naive apprentice. But, if Alyss was to be a diplomat, she’d have to learn about the many unsavory aspects of life.
“As you know, Will’s father isn’t the most… stable person. One of his issues, or perhaps, one of the ways he copes with his issues, is overindulging in alcohol. The local tavern has stopped serving him after he built up too much debt he had no means of paying for. But unfortunately, that didn’t change the fact that he was still reliant on alcohol. So he found other means to obtain it. And with still no way to pay for it, it would seem that those he’s indebted to burned his cabin down as a way to send a message. It is not uncommon for underground debt collectors to cause harm to those who owe them as a way to motivate them to pay what they owe.”
“But, that’s not fair! That was Will’s home too. And he didn’t owe anyone anything. He barely wants to accept help when it’s offered in fear of being indebted to people.”
“I know. But these types of people aren’t all that concerned with the wellbeing of others.”
Alyss sniffed. “What’s Will going to do now? Where will he go?”
Pauline drew the girl closer. “I am certain Ranger Halt will take care of him. After all, typically a ranger’s apprentice would already be residing in their mentor's cabin.”
“And Will’s dad? Will he live with Ranger Halt too?”
Pauline pursed her lips. She knew the answer without ever having to speak to Halt on the matter. But she doubted Will and Halt have had this conversation and she didn’t want Alyss to be the one to accidentally break the news to Will. “I’m sure whatever happens will be in Will’s best interest. Now, go back to work and actually review that document rather than just stare at it. I won’t have my apprentice falling behind on her work because she’s busy daydreaming about some boy.”
Alyss’ cheeks grew pink once more at Pauline’s teasing. “I told you it’s-”
Pauline waved her off. “Not like that, yes, I heard your protest the first time. Now get to work.”
