"You don't want to take a gap year, Alec? There's nothing wrong with it. A lot of people do it."

With his back to Theo, Alec rolls his eyes (he doesn't do it to Theo's face because there's a 90 percent chance that Theo will smack the back of his head) at the question that the chimera has asked him almost a dozen times in the past year. It's Alec's senior year of high school, and applications have been sent and processed for a few months now. The month of April brings anxiety amongst most of the senior class due to acceptance letters from colleges and universities being sent out and received any day now.

Alec has gotten a few letters (two universities saying he's been accepted and one denying him entrance into their school) and each one has gotten Theo more and more agitated.

"I don't want to take a gap year, Theo. I know it's perfectly normal, but I'd rather just go straight into the college experience."

Even though Theo has stayed in Beacon Hills and going to the local community college, Liam has gone to university a few hours away, along with Mason and Corey who are at a separate university scattered amongst California.

It confused Alec as to why Theo is so anxious about him leaving when he didn't react this exact way with Liam. When it came to Liam leaving, Theo was more repressed and hunched in on himself. It took a lot of reassurance from Liam that they would travel back and forth to visit each other before Theo was able to stomach the idea of his boyfriend leaving him behind (Liam wasn't any better, but he tried not to show it).

"I know but—"

"Baby, he's made up his mind," Liam interrupts gently. It was one of the weekends that Liam had to come down to Beacon Hills to visit his boyfriend. "He wants to go. Let him."

At least one of them was on his side. Alec finishes putting away his laundry (that Theo helped him fold) and plops down on his bed, crossing his legs. He has the perfect view of Liam and Theo who are just past the doorway. They are turned towards each other where Theo has his hands on his hips and Liam's arms are crossed over his chest.

"I get that," Theo grits through clenched teeth, "but I just want him to make an informed decision. He has to know how dangerous college could be."

Alec cuts in, "You're barely two years older than, and Liam is only one year older, and you're both are already in college! Why is it different if I go? I won't even be far away from Beacon Hills. Just a couple of hours away."

By the time Alec finishes his rant, he's almost yelling at the other two boys.

"Because," Theo snaps back, "who knows what could happen to you on your own."

Alec throws his hands up in exasperation, "Anything can happen to anyone. It's not that big of a deal."

This response causes Theo to shut down quickly and instantly. He narrows his eyes at Alec, hands still on his hips, before moving past Liam to go downstairs where he'll probably stress-binge the new season of Law and Order: SVU (which isn't good because then he'll tell Alec and Liam all the different ways they can get hurt, using the show as specific examples).

Liam sucks in a quick breath, "You've really done it now. He's not going to talk to you for hours now."

Alec knows this too. He knows that when Theo shuts down he will ignore almost everyone, excluding Liam (but they're boyfriends so it's not fair at all, Alec concludes, and they're each other anchors so whatever).

"I just don't understand why he's so adamant about me not going to college right away," the younger boy whines, flopping on his back, disturbing the pillows on his bed.

"You know," Liam starts slowly, inching closer to Alec, "my parents acted pretty similarly. They were both hesitant to let me go to a university hours away, especially when they found out about hunters and all of that Monroe bullshit."

"So you're saying that Theo is acting like he's my parent? And that's why he's acting so weird? Because I'm like his child?"

"Yeah, pretty much," Liam says, shrugging. "At least, that's my current working theory."

Well, now Alec feels a little bad about his outburst at Theo just those few minutes ago. It must be hard for Theo to be one of the only ones to stay at Beacon Hills while the rest of the puppy pack is a few hours away. While Theo does have Nolan and the adults, it must be hard to be away from his anchor/boyfriend and Mason and Corey (who have elevated into being some of Theo's closest friends). And now Alec is leaving? After Alec and Theo have gotten even closer this past year with the other members of the puppy pack gone for this first year of college.

The two have shared late night meals, last minute studying (on Alec's part only because Theo is the type of person to be studying weeks before the exam), and just enjoying each other's company even when they don't do anything but be in the same room.

Sometimes even Alec will leave the McCall house and make his way to the Dunbar-Geyer household to be close to Theo after particularly bad nightmares. It calms the both of them to be near each other on nights like those (where he has been given explicit instructions to leave a note or a text message for Melissa after not doing so once and Melissa promptly freaking out and alerting the whole pack — that was not a pretty day).

"So, what do I do? What did you do to calm your parents down?" Alec is desperate for some kind of helpful answer.

The beta is close enough to sit on the bed next to Alec's lying lump. "Well, there's not much you can do. I would take the talks my parents gave me with no hassle. And I tried to assure them that I'd be fine. That all they taught me was going to help keep me safe," Liam pauses, looking thoughtful, "When I got to college, I'd give them daily updates, too. I still do, actually. I text them at least once a day how I'm doing, and I call maybe once a week."

Alec takes in all the wise words of Liam. None of his advice is bad, it's actually pretty helpful. He can see himself texting Theo everyday, especially because he knows himself, and he knows he's going to be asking Theo for help on his homework. It doesn't totally help how to make Theo less anxious about his future departure now but it sounds like nothing will.

The two werewolves get up from the bed and make their way downstairs to the living room where (Alec knew it!) Theo was watching SVU and not bothering to look up at them.

Liam, the traitor, merely sits down next to Theo who immediately shifts to nestle into the beta's side. (If it's any consolation, Theo still ignores Liam and is only using him for his warmth.)

The youngest werewolf inches closer to the couple and decides to sit on the coffee table that's in front of them. It's already pretty close to the couch, so Alec is very close to Theo and Liam. "So..." Alec starts. "Can you please not ignore me anymore?"

His request only causes Theo to take a quick glance at him before moving his gaze back to the TV as much as he can with Alec right in front of his view, blocking most of it.

"Theo," Alec whines loudly. It's childish and he's pretty sure he's pouting at the couple, but he can't help it. He doesn't want Theo to be upset anymore.

"What," the chimera grunts in annoyance.

Okay, that's an opening. Alec will take it!

"Stop ignoring me. I want to talk to you." Alec tries to use his serious voice but it might not be working when Theo merely lifts an eyebrow.

"Hear the kid out, babe," Liam gently nudges Theo with his elbow. (Alec knew Liam was good for something!)

Theo is silent and unmoving for a few more seconds before be sighs in acceptance and gestures for Alec to start talking.

"Look, I know I'm leaving in a few months for college, and I know you're scared something is going to happen to me, but I also think it's because you're going to miss me," Alec rambles and can't stop. "But Theo, I'm going to miss you, too. And I'm going to worry about you and if you're okay over here, too. And I'm going to get sad and cry when you're not a few minutes away from me."

The more he talks, the more Alec is scaring himself. He'll be alone. Without his pack by his immediate side. That's never happened to him before. It's been going really well being in Beacon Hills with the puppy pack and the other, older pack members when they visit. There's always someone willing to help you and be there for you. Now, though? Now, Alec is not going to have that support system. Most importantly, he's not going to have Theo by his side.

"I'm going to be totally alone," Alec trails off. It's random (or maybe not that random) but Alec feels tears prick his eyes, threatening to fall in front of Theo and Liam who have been silent while he's been rambling and second-guessing his life.

The silence from Theo doesn't last long after, though.

"Alec, it's okay. Take a deep breathe with me." Theo is relaxing his own posture and taking exaggerated breaths in-and-out to get Alec to try to copy him. "Shut your eyes, sweetie."

Alec shuts his eyes. Tries to breathe in sync with Theo.

He can also smell guilt seeping out of Theo (the chimera must be feeling really guilty for letting his true chemosignals come through). "I'm really sorry for stressing you out, sweetie. It's just— it's just hard knowing I won't be there to protect you anymore. I feel like it's been my job for so long and soon I won't be able to anymore. Because you're leaving."

Theo goes to rest a hand on Alec's shoulder and urges him to open his eyes now that the werewolf is calmer. "But I'm just one phone call or text away. And you beat your ass I'll drop everything if you need me."

"Even Liam?" Alec teases.

"Even Liam," Theo says, grinning at the werewolf in fondness.

Liam squawks, "Hey! I'm right here, you know? Your boyfriend who very much is a little upset at your comment."

The chimera rolls his eyes and both Alec and Theo know Liam is only messing around with them. "Oh, shut up, little wolf."

"It really be from the people that you love," Liam murmurs quietly.

They all giggle and smile widely at the teasing and the once tense atmosphere quickly dissolve into warmth and family. Alec feels back at ease again after the feelings-and-talking fiasco that none of them will ever bring up again, even at gun point.

It soothes something inside of Alec. Probably the lingering feeling of being absolutely terrified of going to college on his own. That feeling may never completely go away yet, but Theo and Liam have already made him feel better, which he's grateful for. The love that they give to Alec is what keeps him going on days where he remembers Monroe and the hunters and his whole family being dead because of them. Where he doesn't want to get out of bed because the nightmares have plagued him and he didn't get enough sleep. They help him more than they will ever understand.

Suddenly, Theo gets a gleam in his eyes that sickens Alec immediately (theo is scary! Alec fears him!).

"This summer will be all about how to be safe. And I'm going to teach you so you're prepared for anything and everything."

Oh, maybe that won't be so bad. How many lessons does Theo even have to teach him? It can't be that many.

I like thinking about my muses in natural, mundane, normal settings. I think it's funny. Take my HC's.

Strade, clothes stained with blood, stressing over the countertop looking at his 1040 with a calculator present. He plays a lot of dangerous games, but never with the IRS.

Ren general shopping. Man's gotta pick up his flour. Get some more TP. Standing in front of the aisle for all of 30 seconds debating soft, or ultra soft. Maybe get some new socks while he's out. Stop at the Burger King drive thru cause it was on the way. Then he's gotta get home and put them all away. What an exciting day.

Lawrence needing to stop on a walk because his pocket ripped on a twig, and all his coins fell. Awesome. If carrying coins isn't good enough, now they're dirt-coins. Super paranoid about leaving one behind for some reason. Lord forbid he abandon his dime. It's all under his nails now, too. Great. Super humiliating.

Mason figuring out the internet. He has no idea what LOL means. Why are there so many images with text on them? Does use text faces. Thinks they're super funny, very creative little things. " :) ". 100% needed assistance through Fox's application process. Just didn't know what half those words meant. The fuck's a PDF? How does he get his ID, which is in real life, onto this machine, which is not real?

What?

Freemasonry is a group of good men who come together to make good men into better men. As well as collecting conspiracy theories like a white shirt attracts red sauce. They also donate enormous amounts of money to charity, and have an impeccable sense of style. I'm an FtM man in my mid-thirties who is probably finished with the medical parts of my transition, I work in the community (meaning, my full-time job, my colleagues, all of our customers and most of the contractors are all queer), and I dabble in writing and painting and fibrecraft.

For convenience, I and everyone else will be pseudonymous, so get ready to meet Brother Dude, Brother Fellow, Senior Warden Tish and Junior Warden Tosh, Worshipful Brother Ignotus, Master of this Lodge, etc, as I set my left foot forward on the way to joining the Lodge Of Anonymity.

For now, I'm Chap, hopefully soon to be Brother Chap, Entered Apprentice, and eventually many years down the line Brother Chap, Master Mason.

Why?

A little bit of a lot of things. I want to have ritual in my life, which has meaning to other people and isn't just something that I do alone. I like the idea of knowledge being paced out over months and years and decades, rather than binged when the whim takes me, and of being knowledge which is attached to people, where someone teaches me and imparts their own ideas and nuances rather than just reading from a cold book. And related to that, I would love to have some formal moral instruction, to not constantly be poking at my ethical gag reflex alone to work out where the line lies between something that is morally wrong and something that just irks me. I want community, especially with people who aren't immediately similar to me, and paradoxically with people who share more literal landmarks with me - Having more friends who go to the local pubs, walk on the local lanes, shop at the local shops, rather than all my friends being a train ride away. I am hugely enthused by the idea of a place where I CAN NOT talk about politics, and anyone bringing up politics to me will be censured for it. I want to take on a responsibility that isn't life-or-death for my community, but that still feels more grounded in other people than my gym routine. Also, the Masons make better men, and I would love to be a better man.

So where are you now?

I'm not a Mason yet. I had my first meet and chats in November and will have my interview in February, and between November and now me and another few prospective new brothers have been coming down to the Lodge every other week to start to get to know the Brothers. I've been told to expect to be Entered around St George's Day if I pass the interview. But first... The interview, and I must admit I am nervous.

But Why Blog About It?

Because there's a lot of talk online about trans people. A lot of Masons in the States insisting both that no trans man would be able to have the character to become a Mason, and would always be blackballed even if their Grand Lodge technically admits them, and that no trans woman should ever be allowed to stay a Mason, because the simple fact of transitioning is unmasonic conduct.

But, the United Grand Lodge Of England says;

A candidate for admission to Freemasonry under UGLE must be a man. Should a person who has undergone gender reassignment and has become a man apply to become a Freemason then his application must be processed in the same way as for any other male candidate.

A Freemason who after initiation ceases to be a man does not cease to be a Freemason. We expect that Freemasons will act with compassion and sensitivity towards their fellow Freemasons.

We hope that no Freemason would engage in unwanted conduct relating to another Freemason’s actual or perceived gender reassignment or gender transition.

No candidate should be subjected to questions about their gender which could make them feel uncomfortable.

The risk re: incidental lye exposure in soap making is shockingly overexaggerated. That scene in fight club has had disastrous consequences for soap making etc.

Splashing a little lye solution on yourself is not dangerous. Holding the raw crystals in your hands is not dangerous, it'll start to tingle and get weird long before it actually burns you. I have done both--i started soap making at 13 with no adult guidance or supervision. The one time I have gotten at all injured was when I spilled unsaponified soap batter down my sleeve and didn't bother to clean it or change my shirt for several hours until I got a itchy hot rash. I flushed it with cold water and it was ultimately fine.

Rinse accidental lye exposures well with cold water, it'll hurt like a motherfucker if you get it into open wounds, if you're doing it with children maybe put them in safety goggles and gloves or sumn bc kid skin is a lot more sensitive and kids are a lot worse at not getting gunk on themselves. But unless it's like fun for you you rlly don't need ppe for soap making.

Lye IS a problem in: hair relaxers. I don't think it's in many/any anymore but, in the last several decades, hair straightening chemical products marketed at Black women have been lye-based and, putting lye on ones scalp for an extended processing time bc white supremacist beauty/professionalism standards enforce it WILL cause gnarly burns, especially if done regularly.

Under-fatted lye soaps have also been used historically on hair for extended applications as a lice/parasite treatment which will also give ya burns, proooobably led to the invention of lye-based hair relaxers.

Mostly tho I think the modern popular assessment of the dangers of lye come from 1) that scene in fight club where in common storytelling form a bit of science was highly overexaggerated for dramatic effect and 2) the bougeification of soapmaking as a hobby, selling ppl all kinds of expensive junk and saying it's Really For Real Super Neccesary

All u need to have ready to use soap in a few hours is

A glass jar with a lid -- you can do about 1 lbs of soap per quart of capacity so make a 1 lb batch for a quart, 2 for a half gallon, 4 for a gallon. Mason jars and big pickle jars work gr8.

Some assorted glass vessels for measuring stuff into

A digital food scale

A dish towel you don't love

A big pot ur jar fits into

A silicone spatula

A recipe-- use http://soapcalc.net/ to play around with proportions of oils you have cheap easy access to until you get something reasonable. I rlly like 1/2&1/2 olive and coconut oil.

Some shit to pour the soap into as a mold like a silicone baking pan or a plastic tub-- if your container is rigid line it with wax paper so u can actually get the shit out

Measure your oils, put them in the jar, throw it in a pot of water on the stove as a double boiler on low/medium heat

Measure your water and lye, mix them in a glass container by swirling until it's clear. IT WILL GET VERY HOT so be careful

Chill until the oils and the lye solution are about the same temperature as felt thru the side of the vessel (people use thermometers, I do not.)

Add the lye solution to the oil, put the lid on the jar, WRAP THE LID WITH A DISH TOWEL, and shake the whole situation very hard until it reaches trace (look up what trace is from regular soap making stuff you'll figure it out). The lid WILL spurt and leak lil bits of caustic lye batter which will be hot and, as described, not overly dangerous but less than ideal to touch for long periods, hence the towel you don't love.

Return the jar to the pot of hot water on low heat. Take the lid off and just leave it sorta covering the top of the jar. Let that baby cook for a few hours until it "gels"--it looks kinda like Vaseline, again look up "hot process method soap" from regular guides to get the idea

Pour the hot soap gel into your mold, using the spatula to get it out. At this point it's hot and sticky and so can still burn you, but IS finished soap that won't *chemically* burn you. Work quickly bc it will cool fast into chunks

Let the soap cool overnight. Rinse your jar and spatula out in the sink-- since the soap is now finished, it's very easy to clean. Yay!
