Masachika Ichimura as the Phantom:
Tumblr media
Right... so, um, i just discovered that Ichimura Masachika, the man who played Erik in the Japanese production of "The Phantom of the Opera" (in the 90's), was chosen by Kunihiko Yuyama (director of the first Pokémon movie) to voice Mewtwo in the first "Pokémon" movie. And Yuyama was actually inspired by Erik's (The Phantom) character to write Mewtwo as a tragic, sympathetic villain that struggled with his own existence as he learned how to be a better person in the end... Masachika himself said he was surprised because Mewtwo is pratically The Phantom, but Pokémon version. Except that he wasn't abused because of his physical appearance as Erik was, sure, but the point still stands!
I'M DYING, MY BOTH FAVORITE THINGS EVER, CANONICALLY CONNECTED 🥺❤️

OMG THIS IS SO PERFECT
According to sources Masachika Ichimura was hired because of his performance in the phantom of the opera musical, does that mean that maybe they saw some similar vibe in both the phantom and mewtwo’s characters?
Hi Anon! Thanks for writing in! Sorry for the delay, I had to do some research on this one.
Yes, absolutely! Theater actor Masachika Ichimura was asked to be Mewtwo’s seiyuu in part due to his role in the first Japanese production of The Phantom of the Opera. He'd reprise his role as Mewtwo in Mewtwo Returns and the remake Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, as well as the role as the Phantom in the sequel Love Never Dies. The characters are very similar and the Mewtwo Strikes Back crew comments on it quite a bit!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So quick history. (Skip this paragraph if uninterested!) You have to understand that when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical version of Phantom debuted in 1986, it became a worldwide sensation. As of this writing, it remains the longest running show in Broadway history. It was awarded the Tony for best musical in 1988. That same year, Phantom played to sold out houses at the Nissei Theater in Tokyo. It was playing up to 10 shows a week. It was a lavish affair; Webber and his crew made sure the Japanese production was as accurate to its London and New York counterparts as possible. Phantom was a cultural event for many in the late 80’s.
As you noted, Mewtwo and Erik, the Phantom, are very similar characters. Both are reclusive misanthropes, mysterious and intelligent. Both are rejected from society due to biological reasons outside their control. Both are excellent inventors and architects, exiling themselves to elaborate lairs of their own making. Both feel deeply. Both think blowing shit up is a valid way to solve their problems. 🤷
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MSB’s screenwriter Takeshi Shudo notes the similarities in his blog. “[The Phantom’s] talented yet dark and distorted character may indeed be of the same quality as Mewtwo in 'Mewtwo Strikes Back.'”
MSB director Yuyama Kunihiko notes the similarities as well. “Mr. Ichimura, who [voices] Mewtwo, he’s a well-known musical star in Japan. He’s famous for playing characters like the Phantom from The Phantom of the Opera. Dark and complicated characters.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Ichimura’s casting that ultimately propelled Shudo to write the prologue for Mewtwo Strikes Back, including Mewtwo’s dark history and his preponderance for asking “Who am I? What am I?”
On reading the finished script, Masachika Ichimura himself remarked, “It’s just like the Opera House.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yes! There's absolutely Phantom vibes in Mewtwo’s character. The character was similar enough to influence the director’s choice of Ichimura as his voice actor, and Ichimura’s hiring inspired the screenwriter to add more Phantom-ness to Mewtwo’s character as he wrote. It all influenced each other. Pretty neat!

It’s probably harder to find Phantoms who have different takes on the character the longer the show ran, so who were some of the earliest phantoms who deviated noticeably from MC’s performances?
I think Colm Wilkinson comes first to mind; he very much feels like a Phantom who looked at Michael Crawford's interpretation and decided that, if Crawford veers right, then he's going to veer hard left; if Crawford goes up, he's going down. Wilkinson's Phantom feels very rough in his voice and body language whereas Crawford was more elegant and smooth; very raw and primal where Crawford was refined and vulnerable; and very sexual where Crawford was more sensual.
That being said, I think many of the early Phantoms did a fine job of distinguishing themselves from Crawford while still sticking to the template that he created. I think of Dave Willetts, who added a more unhinged veneer to his acting; Davis Gaines, Kevin Gray, Franc D'Ambrosio, Thomas James O'Leary, and Alexander Goebel, who kept Crawford's smooth elegance while adding more anger and twistedness; and Steve Barton, with his exquisite expression of deep longing and grief.
And then you have Masachika Ichimura, who looked at Michael Crawford and went, "I'm going to copy this man's every movement and vocal inflection, only in Japanese." You go, Ichimura.

Bronev
CV: Masachika Ichimura
Targent’s Azran-obsessed boss. Willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, with the great organizational power of Targent behind him, he continues to work in secret. His full name is Leon Bronev.
At the cave in Froenborg, he used his armed men to threaten and abduct Aurora. The power Targent holds can be seen at their base “The Nest” (lit. God Street)
Underneath his Sunglasses…
Bronev always wears sunglasses, and never relaxes his intense facial expression. Nobody has seen his true face. All of Targent’s members wear sunglasses
Actually an Archaeologist
His obsession with finding Azran ruins stems from him being an Archaeologist. The reason for his actions seems to come from his one-track inquisitive mind.
After abducting Aurora, he reveals himself to be an archaeologist. His room in The Nest is lined with objects that an archaeologist would take interest in (lit. objects that make one feel like an archaeologist).
Actions in the Prequel Trilogy
Bronev first appeared in “Miracle Mask”. Targent siezed the Nautilus Chamber found by Layton with their overwhelming numbers. At that time, Targent’s goals were unknown. However, there is some sort of connection between him and Descole, and he also seemed to know Layton, too.
The size and extent of Targent’s power was can be seen. He was searching for the Azran legacy

I’ve been a fan of this series for a couple years now… Started with season 5, so I should check out the earlier ones sometime.
Some things to note: S6 has Masachika Ichimura (known to POTO fans as Japan’s original Phantom, and Pokemon fans as the Japanese voice of Mewtwo) in a major role. And S7, which I’m rewatching as KIKU TV in Hawaii is showing it again, has a pretty good look at how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted healthcare in Japan. Though with generally more positive endings than we saw in real life. 🙂
There was also a miniseries called “Doctor Y,” focusing on the male surgeon Kaji Hideaki as he bumbles his way to a solution with some advice from Doctors Daimon and Jonouchi.
Stay with the series if you can continue to find the episodes!
So I’ve been quiet for the past few days and that’s due to a mixture of being back in Shanghai and thus stuffing my mouth and
watching the jdrama Doctor X: Gekai Daimon Michiko
which BTW YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH BECAUSE IT’S SO GOOD
Basically it’s about a kickass freelance female surgeon, Daimon Michiko, also known as Doctor X. Having a mysterious past that few know about and a history of doing surgeries all over the world, Michiko doesn’t give a damn about the hospital politics that run Japan’s Medical industry. All she cares about is doing surgeries. So of course when she’s hired by a Japanese University Hospital, she immediately shakes things up- strutting around in her high heels, Michiko bluntly criticizes the antiquated methods used and the hospital’s focus on their good image and name, rather than on their patients’ health. With her skill as a surgeon and a strong conviction that she must never fail, Michiko shows what’s important to have as a doctor is the desire to help sick people heal (which should be obvious already but well).
Tumblr media
What makes Michiko such a great character and such a pleasure to watch is… well… where to start?
The fact that she’s the only female surgeon in her division and the other doctors’ sexist attitudes are so apparent from the start? And it’s just so satisfying to see them eventually blown away by her as they slowly realize that yes she’s just that awesome
But at the same time what’s nice is that Michiko herself just does not really give a fuck about their opinions and what they think of her, because seriously she just wants to do surgeries and save people’s lives. That’s it really.
Except she also likes spending her money playing mahjong, dancing at clubs, going off on cruises, and well, why not you know?
Also she has this guardian/manager, Akira-san, who is an adorable grandpa-like character and acts as Michiko’s partner-in-crime. He is my 3rd favorite character in this series.
My 2nd favorite (and the 2nd reason for why you should watch this show) is Jonouchi Hiromi, 33 years old, an anesthesiologist, a divorcee, and a single mother.
Tumblr media
Tell me that that is not a beautiful woman right there I dare you.
Hiromi stands out from the other doctors in that she’s the first to recognize Michiko’s brilliance as a surgeon, she’s one of the only female doctors in the whole hospital, and she also sees through the other doctors’ posturing bullshit. Naturally her and Michiko establish a connection and I SHIP THEM SO HARD (and clearly I’m not the only one because there are like 100+ fanfics about them on pixiv and a Chinese fanpage).
But seriously their relationship is beautiful. It transforms from awkward, grudging respect as they make a great surgery team:
Tumblr media
to a strong “friendship” with the two having each other’s backs
Tumblr media
(Literally almost all of their conversations pass the Bechdel Test because Michiko isn’t interested in romance and Hiromi’s done with men after her divorce, also they’re two badass doctors what is not to like about this???)
Like I’ll be honest all the medical stuff is kind of iffy (as all medical dramas are) and sometimes it gets repetitive and I’m still only at the beginning of Season 2 but pleaseee try an episode pleaseee
WATCH IT FOR THE ADORABLE MICHIKO AND BEAUTIFUL HIROMI
