The Ace Edit - August 2018
By: @acevallee
We are officially halfway through Summer and the real heat has yet to hIt New York City. I’ve recently had to make some beauty/lifestyle changes to adjust to these dog days of summer.
MAKE PLAY
We all know I’ve been barefaced most of the summer, slathering nothing but SPF on my face. Just because I’ve been minimal doesn’t mean I’m boring. I do like to play. What I live for is a good base. Lately Fenty Pro Filt’r Foundation has been supreme. just a few dots here and there and blended well. I even use foundations as a tinted moisturizer. The shade 240 just matches my skin perfectly and that is rare. I just want to enhance my natural glow honey. Once you find the perfect base everything else falls into place. For eyes , the Natasha Denona “Camel” palette is an everyday dream, no one’s shadow formula can compete with hers. For fun colors and shimmers I do live for Colourpop, I’m like an OG fan since the days of “Bae” and “Rex”. I’m not really wild with bold color yet I still like to play around with it. With Colourpop I’m not spending major coin but the quality of products is great.
Curls Curls Curls Curls… Curls I Do Adore
I unexpectedly went natural. I didn’t plan on it, it just happened during a dark time last year. Stress and Depression made my hair falling out in little clumps. I went into hiding for 7 months, just coming out here and there. Since I wasn’t going anywhere except work, I didn’t feel the need to do my hair anymore. I had stopped putting high heat and/or chemicals on my hair and just washing, rinsing and using hair oils and a hair gel that is free of shitty chemicals to slick my hair back and lay down my baby hurrs.  I also started cutting it more often which has been aiding in my hair growth. You know how they say you have to fall in order to rise up. Taking those months and having time to myself allowed my hair to be repaired and for the texture to improve and for my strands to become thicker and my curls... well,  actually becoming curls again. For The first time ever, I can say that I unapologetically love my hair.
SILKY AF
The struggling battle with my Keratosis Pilaris is ongoing and I’m looking for new products everyday to get it under control. Currently it has been super uncomfortable in this heat. Frank Body came all the way through with their Coconut Body Balm. My Skin Soaks it all up while leaving me with a silky gleam.
The skin on my face has been silky smooth thanks to Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial. Smoothing out my texture and leaving me with a pretty radiance. I would use Glossier’s Solution on the daily while using this treatment once a week or every 2 weeks. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU ALWAYS FOLLOW UP ANY PRODUCT CONTAINING AHA/BHA WITH SUNSCREEN!
  Vital Beauty
A good night’s sleep can actually set you up for a much more positive day. It all begins with preparations like investing in the right sheets (Find out if you’re a hot or cold sleeper… it has helped me out in finding the perfect material for me to snooze in). I’m a hot sleeper so cotton percale sheets from Parachute and Brooklinen have been amazing. Plus, the less that I sweat at night, the less breakouts I wake up to. I prefer my sheets in calming a calming shade and/or clean and uncomplicated prints.
Setting up the perfect nighttime routine, from using a soothing lavender body wash, a dreamy bath bomb, a drop of Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil to a relaxing cup of té de manzanilla.
Clean, sleek PJs make me so excited for bed. I love bralettes  and sleep shorts from Aerie, They are affordable and make me so excited to get ready for bed. Preparing for bed makes me look forward to getting some rest and waking up more positive, motivated and ready to take on the day.
  GOALS
I Love Starting fresh. It makes me feel like I can achieve anything. I’m entering a new chapter with a new job and with it I want to just start fresh from the inside out. TRACKING MY WATER INTAKE BECAUSE DEHYDRATION IS REAL EATING CLEAN AND HEALTHY. COMPLETELY CLEANSING MY BODY AND FILLING IT WITH NUTRIENTS. Taking my daily vitamins, being active, even if its the bare minimum. Let me clarify, This isn’t about size. Slender, Pudgy, Plus… You can actually be healthy at any size. You don’t have to be skinny to be considered healthy (Have you seen Ashley Graham, Iskra Lawrence, Jessamyn Stanley?) Just being pro active in your life regardless of the number on the scale or on your jeans. Taking action and making healthier choices that are perfect for YOU, so that YOU can be the best and healthiest that you can be and most importantly… HAPPY.

So I made this blog as a safe place to dump my current hyper fixations, and well, the past couple of weeks its Marvis toothpaste. This is an Italian brand of toothpaste that comes in a variety of flavors. I’m not trying to be an ad, know that this stuff is also really pricey and can be difficult to get a hold of.
Tumblr media
I like tracking down bargains. I like collecting things, especially things that are discontinued. I love flavors and taste combinations and the ways they can sometimes stir the imagination. And while I love the taste of mint, especially peppermint, I think normal toothpaste is really sharp and unpleasant tasting and I’m not  always motivated to brush my teeth like I should be. I’m also not going to pretend I’m not extremely pretentious at times.
Many of these flavors are pretty mild, even the sweet ones are closer to a fruit tea than a fruit punch. Most of them have a mint flavor that makes them feel clean, but the mint goes away as soon as you finish and you’re left with pleasant aftertastes.  The toothpaste is also very THICK, its concentrated and you only need a little bit of it on the toothbrush. It also doesn’t have foaming chemicals.
So this is my review of the Marvis Toothpaste flavors:
Classic Strong Mint : Really good tasting mint. Doesn’t have any of the sharp or taste-bud numbing flavors of regular toothpaste. 6/10 Smokers Whitening Mint: Just a really nice mint toothpaste. 6/10
Cinnamon Mint Toothpaste: Tastes like cinnamon candies, except without the red hot burning flavor. Feels like I could take a shot of fireball whiskey after this. 6/10
Amarelli Licorice Toothpaste: This one seemed off-putting to me because I hate black licorice candies. This sort of has the fennel flavor of licorice but without the bitterness. 7/10
Jasmin Mint Toothpaste: I was expecting perfume, but its a little closer to a tea flavor. Some people said it was way too floral. 8/10
Ginger Mint Toothpaste: Its good, but I don’t taste the ginger at all. Mild and sweet. Not bad but boring compared to the others. 5/10
Aquatic Mint Toothpaste: The title of this conjured up some refreshing imagery in my mind, but I was not expecting it to literally taste like the ocean. Has a strong seaweed flavor, or something? I can imagine some palettes loving this flavor but wasn’t for me. Maybe I’ll like it more the second time. 4/10 Orange Blossom Bloom: Just a really delightful orange flavor. 7/10 Anise Mint: This one works really well, although similar to the amarelli liccorice toothpaste. The anise balances really well with the mint. 7/10
Black Forest Toothpaste: this one is discontinued but still available in some places. Mint, with strong cherry, and a mild background chocolate flavor. I thought it would be a terrible choice for toothpaste but it still gives you a “clean” feeling. Some people said it tastes like cherry cough syrup. 8/10
Sweet & Sour Rhubarb: Another discontinued one. Its interesting and I don’t know how to describe it, although the flavor is more sweet than sour. 6/10
Royal Toothpaste : Part of the Wonders of the World series. Lemon oil, tangerines, nutmeg, and rose water aftertaste. This feels like toothpaste they’d sell at the Palace of Versailles gift shop. I think you’d either like this or hate it, but it made me feel like a prince.  9/10
Karakum:  Also a Wonders of the World limited edition flavor, meant to invoke middle east spice trade flavors. Peppermint, orange, and cardamom. I can really visualize an alternate universe where all toothpaste has a cardamom flavor. 9/10
Rambas: the final Wonders of the World flavor, and my favorite of the three, meant to feel like its in the tropics. Peach, pineapple and mango. This one is really fruity and pleasant.  10/10
Tea Collection Earl Grey: another discontinued one. Tastes exactly like earl grey tea with a little milk. I had to buy a couple tubes to stockpile because I can’t imagine not having this toothpaste. 10/10
Tea Collection Blossom Tea: Really authentic black tea flavor with a pleasant orange flavor. 8/10
Tea Collection Creamy Matcha: Really flavorful and true to its name. Not really a bitter matcha. 7/10
Conclusion: My favorites were definitely Earl Grey, Royal, Karakum, Rambas, and Black Forest. Runner ups were Armarelli Licorice, Anise Mint, Jasmine Mint and Cinnamon.
If you hate mint I’d recommend the Rambas toothpaste, any of the tea collection flavors, sweet and sour, or orange blossom bloom.

Marvis, a contemporary Italian toothpaste and toothbrush brand, has launched a line of colored toothpaste holders. This range of colored toothpaste holders was designed by Giulio Iacchetti, an Italian industrial designer, to expand the brand’s collection of novelty products with an overcap.
Marvis toothpaste holder is a colourful and playful object that can widen the tube’s support base while also allowing it to stand on its own. This overcap is designed to be attached to the Marvis cap.

SmileDirectClub’s former CEO is back with a new dental startup called Tend
A growing number of newer dental brands has been attracting money from venture investors who are still kicking themselves for missing runaway hits. Most notable among these breakout companies is newly public SmileDirectClub, which sells teeth-straightening products directly to consumers and is beloved by analysts even though its shares have slipped since its September IPO.
Among the many teeth-related startups to more recently attract private funding is Swift Health Systems, a five-year-old company that makes invisible braces under the brand INBRACE and just raised $45 million from VCs; Henry the Dentist, a two-year-old, mobile dental clinic that raised $10 million earlier this year; and Quip, a five-year-old maker of electric toothbrushes and oral care products that has garnered roughly $62 million from investors.
Still, a new company called Tend is especially notable, and not because it just raised $36 million in seed and Series A funding — which it did, led by Redpoint Ventures.
First and foremost, Tend sees an opportunity to reinvent the dentist’s office. How? Through tech-heavy dental “studios” that “prioritize” your comfort by featuring sleek waiting areas that it promises you’ll almost never need to use and by offering “Netflix in your chair” that you will enjoy while wearing the latest and greatest Bose headphones. (Tend says it will get your favorite show queued up before you arrive for your appointment, which you will breezily book online, and whose prices you can learn in advance, so you don’t suffer sticker shock later. )
A Fast Company reporter who visited the startup’s newly opened flagship space in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood was even offered a selection of only the finest toothpastes, including that of Marvis, an Italian brand that comes in such distinct flavors as Amarelli licorice, cinnamon, ginger and jasmine — not to mention “classic strong,” “whitening,” and “aquatic.”
It all sounds faintly ridiculous, but also fairly nice, especially contrasted with traditional dentist offices, which tend to be both highly antiseptic and astonishingly vague about pricing.
There’s also a kind of precedent for what it’s doing. Specifically, improving on the patient experience has worked out well for One Medical, a venture-backed, tech-driven chain of 70 clinics that has become one of the largest independent groups in the U.S. (It’s also reportedly prepping an IPO.)
Little wonder that one individual participant in Tend’s new funding is Tom Lee, the physician who created One Medical in 2007 and led it as CEO until 2017. Others individual investors include Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa of Warby Parker; Zach Weinberg of Flatiron Health; and Bradley Tusk of Tusk Ventures.
Meanwhile, Tend’s cofounder and CEO is also no slouch, seemingly. Doug Hudson was the CEO of SmileDirectClub for three-and-a-half years, beginning in 2013. Before that, he founded two medical care companies that were acquired: Hearing Planet and Simplex Healthcare.
Whether that pedigree is enough to get the company going will take some time to know but certainly, it’s chasing after a huge market that can very plainly be made better.  In the U.S. alone, the dental market is now a $137 billion market, according to the research group IBIS World, and as Hudson notes in a new Medium post about his latest startup, dentistry has a Net Promoter Score of 1, which is just two points higher than dreaded cable companies.
Consumers “don’t accept this level of service in any other aspect of our lives. Not when shopping for glasses. Not when exercising at home with a stationary bike,” he writes, and it’s true. If Tend can improve the experience even a little bit and its prices are competitive, we’d guess it has a shot.

Jasmine Mint
Tumblr media
Tonight I tried the Jasmine Mint Marvis toothpaste!
This morning I used the Ginger Mint and I stand by my post - it was too minty. Such a shame, I love ginger
So - This had a strong smell in the tube, very floral and a little overpowering - enough that I was worried it was going to be like a perfume in my mouth. However, pleasantly surprised - it was really nice!
It’s a weird flavour - in the way that Rose and Parma Violets are weird flavours - it’s floral and not something I would associate with brushing teeth.
The mint is softer here - probably because of the strong floral taste - it’s not as good as the Liquorice but an improvement on the Ginger for sure.
I was eating crisps before brushing and they were a strong flavour and I certainly feel like this was ‘fresh’ enough to get rid of any lingering smells - I’m not about to chomp on a raw onion but I feel like this would def mask the smell!
I didn’t spend as long brushing as normal because my stupid toothbrush was out of battery so its on the charge now - but I did try to make sure that I spent enough time to get that clean feeling.
(side note: I knew the ginger was too minty - I already have a ulcer on the side of my tongue. I’m not lying when I say mint is so bad in my mouth! Also, as people have asked - I’m using a sonic toothbrush (Philips Sonicare DiamondClean)  on the sensitive, timed settings. It was a gift that I’ve hardly ever used and feel bad about because of how expensive it was)
