Captain Marvel through the male gaze.
Fellas, we need to talk about Captain Marvel.
And I do mean ā€œwe.ā€ I am one of you. Says so right on my birth certificate and Iā€™ve never had reason to question it no matter how much feminist and trans-positive media I marinate in. I enjoy stuff even if I donā€™t completely relate to it in every way. I enjoy insights into the lives and priorities of people who are very different from me.
Author's note: This is quickly going to take on the sort of lecturing tone that I don't really intend to be the default tone of this blog, but even having sat on this for a few days, my primary emotion is frustration and try as I might, I feel it would be dishonest to try to scrape that frustration off the page.
Thereā€™s no point in denying it. This is Girl Power the Movie. It is very much about a woman refusing to be told to calm down, quit being so emotional, or that she should respect her limits. Spoiler alert: she doesnā€™t take it well.
This movie is full of tropes we love when it's a man!
When scrawny pre-supersoldier serum Steve Rogers picks himself back up to face the bullies and declares ā€œI can do this all dayā€ who actually wants him to stay on the ground in a fetal position, whimpering?
So why do so many men cast themselves as the villains in this movie? Why do we assume we are the ones who are jeering Carol? Telling her to slow down, stay down, calm down, stop being emotional? Why do we identify with the people who are using her as a weapon? Why do we identify with the guy who gets snippy when Carol doesnā€™t find his flirting amusing or the fanatics destroying entire civilizations?
Why not identify with Talos or Fury? The men who trust Carol, try to unchain her, believe in her capacity for goodness?
Good Straight Male Representation can Still be Badass.
In the intervening years since this movie was in theaters, I forgot how great of a character Talos is. He makes me proud to be a man! Heā€™s such a great character, Fury too! As a man, there are some great audience surrogates in this movie. Some people are constantly complaining that all masculinity is ā€œtoxicā€ now or that there are no positive representations of men who arenā€™t ā€œqueer coded.ā€ Lets just set aside for the moment how much the fandom fanatically loves Steve Rogers and Bucky and focus on this film.
Talos is a loving husband and father who took extreme risks to protect his family. He also interrupts a cycle of violence by choosing to try to appeal to Carolā€™s conscience. Talos uses reason but he also uses emotion too. These are both tools in his kit, neither is a liability. If you need a macho flex, he handily beats Fury in hand to hand combat and is generally an effective fighter throughout the movie. Yet when push comes to shove, Talosā€™ most powerful weapon is his ability to find a window into Carolā€™s humanity and reawaken it.
Fury saw someone disoriented and helped rather than shot first! He followed his instincts into saving the world! He also, rather critically, was open to changing his mind. The aliens he fought valiantly not all that long ago, he was able to allow himself to recognize that they werenā€™t monsters, they were people driven by very similar instincts and desires as human beings. If you donā€™t think Fury is a hard man, he had just instigated a car wreck he barely walked away from to win a fight merely a day or two before helping save the planet.
Yes, Carol is aloof and cold throughout much of the film. Sheā€™s an alien soldier constantly being told to suppress her emotions and follow orders uncritically. That last part is key! The theme isnā€™t that logic is bad! The theme is that rationality without morality is wrong. Suppressing empathy actually strips you of your rationality, and opens you to being gaslit into thinking that victims are enemies. Talos and Fury both use empathy to unlock Carolā€™s true persona and as well as their fighting skills to save the day.
Conceal, Donā€™t Feel
Carol was a soldier, the mantra to follow orders makes sense in that context. However there was always an ulterior motive. She is an amnesiac serving an authoritarian state as a member of a death squad! Thatā€™s why they want her to be an automaton! They donā€™t want her or any Kree pondering the wider implications of what theyā€™re doing. Sound familiar?
Put the Phone Down.
Consequently, this is a single screen experience. If you are not scrutinizing Larsonā€™s face, her body language, and small details in her tone of voice, youā€™re missing most of her performance! You have to pay attention to Clint Eastwood or Mads Mikkelson, they play very minutiae focused characters. Same with Captain Marvel. It's less austere than Jenna Ortegaā€™s Wednesday, but itā€™s not far off!
Strangers in a Strange Land
The Skrull story is also just fantastic. They can stand in for so many displaced and diasporic people. Kurds, Uighurs, Afghans - anyone greeted with suspicion and violence. Anti-Semitism is also back on the rise. Whatever spicy takes you have about the Balfour Declaration or the occupation of the West Bank, youā€™d do well to remember that if you think most Americans arenā€™t personally responsible when a wedding gets strafed, the same applies to people of Jewish descent.
The Skrulls can be anyone literally and literarily. Theyā€™re such a great representation of any group seen as an interloper. But in the end it's about family, safety, and finding a home. Not taking anything from anyone. They donā€™t even want vengeance.
If itā€™s not about you, Donā€™t Make it About You!
If you are a man, a fan of superhero movies, think women are or should be equal to men - not each equal in separate spheres but equal, and you think this is a man hating movie, explain to me because I just donā€™t get it. Why do you think the cast, crew, writers, etc. think you are Jude Lawā€™s Yon-Rogg instead of Ben Mendelsohnā€™s Talos? How can this movie hate men when the men who are the good guys are so awesome? Who doesnā€™t want to be a badass spy like Fury?
Did you think they were talking about you when they included a biker who gets snippy when Carol doesnā€™t respond to his flirting? Who do you think Marvel thinks you are in this movie and why arenā€™t you seeing yourself in the heroes?

In honor of 6 years of Infinity War and 5 years of Endgame, it's time....
It's FINALLY time for my back-to-back rewatch. I did some digging and I haven't watched Infinity War since May 2021, and I haven't watched Endgame since DECEMBER 2019. WHAT THE HELL???
So, yeah watch this space!!
--
Infinity War Rewatch
Gawd, I don't know if the beginning it going to hurt more or less knowing what happens to Loki....
They did Heimdall so dirty idc
MY BABYGIRL šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ (OG Loki)
Loki saying "We have a hulk" means so much to meeee šŸ˜
"IF I MIGHT INTERJECT" BITCH YOU MIGHT HAVE LIVED!!!
The fact that Thor's last words to Loki were "You really are the worst, Brother" probably haunted Thor for so long, and that HURTS.
I will say one of the best things to come out of the Loki series is that all the theories we had about Loki faking his death and actually being alive were actually validated! Yes, Sacred Timeline Loki died, but there was a version that tricked Thanos and lived.
Tony said "no more surprises" to Pepper and then he was in space for weeks/months (can't remember exactly) and came back nearly dead - You get why he fucked off for 5 years.
THE STANNER HUG, PEOPLE DIED.
Tony and Cap "we're not on speaking terms" but he apparently carried the flip phone everywhere for two years? šŸ„²
STAN LEE šŸ˜šŸ˜ We miss you sir.
I wonder if Chris Pratt's downfall actually started with Peter Quill screwing up everything in this movie šŸ˜šŸ¤£
I will say, I really enjoy that at least the beginning of IW has a lot of comic relief. I feel like Endgame was more serious overall.
Man I can't remember, how did any of the Asgardians survive Thanos' attack?
BEARDED CAP - THE SEXIEST A MAN HAS EVER LOOKED!!
NATASHA ROMANOFF I LOVE YOU!
"There's an Ant-Man and a Spider-Man?" I love you Bruce.
The couple parallels? Stange+Stark and Thor+Quill with battling egos, Quill+Gamora and Wanda+Vision both trying to self-sacrifice with the other not wanting to give them up.
Chris H truly gave such a great performance as heartbroken Thor šŸ„ŗ
"Does it have a name?" "Stormbreaker." "It's a bit much."
"Kick names, take ass."
The gasp when Red Skull came back!!
Cap says we're going "home" but Sam implies that they haven't been to Wakanda. For Cap, "home" meant Bucky šŸ„ŗ
"SEMI-STABLE 100 YEAR OLD MAN" Buckkyyy
There's definitely something sweet about Bruce being in the Hulk Buster!
"It'll kill you." "Only if I die!" "Yes, that's what... killing you means...." NEVER NOT FUNNY
I mean, Strombreaker being made out of fucking Groot is pretty badass.
THOR'S ENTRANCE!!! BITCH HE LIVED!!!!
"She's not alone." I don't care if it's cringe, I love a girl power moment!! It shows how far we've come!! There no longer just has to be one girl superhero!!
Thor my golden boy, you were so close šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜
HERE IT COMES...... I'll never forget the gasps in the theater when everyone started dusting....
And now after watching GOTG3 it's so much worse that Groot goes in front of Rocket šŸ˜
Tony and Nebula being the last survivors was inspired.
Me: What was the post credit scene again? Ohhhh yeahhhh, the Captain Marvel teaser! Of course.
And thats Infinity War! I'll be back tomorrow for Endgame! šŸ–¤šŸ–¤
Endgame Rewatch
CLINT I MISSED YOU!!!
Lila could have been the next Hawkeye if she hadn't been dusted šŸ„²
Tony and Nebula šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜
Tony working with Nebula to save them mirroring Tony building Iron Man in the cave to save himself šŸ˜
Steve Rodgers: From "language" to "son of a bitch" MY BOY HAS GROWN
GAY JOE RUSSO!!
Don't get me started on bringing back Peggy DON'T GET ME STARTED šŸ˜¤
And DON'T get me started on the symbolism of Nat's hair!! In each movie, she has perfectly intentional hair. Except now that they've lost their mission, he lets her hair grow out. She can't let go of the blonde. The blonde that reminds her what they're fighting for. Of her failure, but also for the last time she saw everyone. The last time things were normal.
The rat being the savior of the universe!
Dad Tony šŸ˜ I'm kinda surprised Morgan hasn't made another appearance yet. Maybe when she's a bit older...
Time Heist!!!
Remember when I was afraid that them traveling in time would mess up the timeline and make it so Morgan wasn't born? God that would've been rough.
I love that now the kids love Hulk though šŸ„¹ "Dab!" He deserves this!!
Man, Pepper and Tony really love each other so much šŸ„ŗ Peper knew Tony might not make it back. But she also knew Tony wouldn't be able to live with himself if he didn't try.
Oh no, how did I forget about Bruce and Rocket going to get Thor? šŸ˜
The Russos were so sick for making Thor's trauma a joke. However I kinda understand why they did it because otherwise it would have been WAY too dark.
The amount of regret Clint must have felt after Nat died and he realized he could have spent the last five years with her and chose not to.
Scott being the only one invested in Thor's story šŸ˜
The elevator scene!!! "Hail Hydra" everyone was GAGGED!!!
There goes my baby girl to meet the love of his life šŸ„¹ (Loki stealing the cube)
Thor's smile when he gets Mjnolnir šŸ„¹ "I'm still worthy." Yes you are ā¤ļø
"Make love, not war!" āœŒļø
Ugh, the double Nebula thing is really annoying. I guess they had to do it to get Thanos in the mix but ehhh.
THE OG BIG THREE!!! And Thor's transformation with Mjnolnir and Stormbreaker! So badass!
When Strange signals ā˜ļø to Tony, is he saying Carol was their one chance to win, or was he just telling Tony, this is it?
The fact that Peter basically became an Avenger and then lost Tony in one day šŸ˜
The fact that Chadwick was sick when they were filming these movies kills me šŸ˜„
Happy taking care of Morgan šŸ˜šŸ˜
I still love that they brought Harley back šŸ„¹
Bucky knew Steve wasn't gonna come back. He knew he was gonna choose Peggy over him šŸ’”
"No, I don't think I will" - I wonder if they knew this line would become a meme hahaha
So, did past Steve and Peggy have kids? This feels like it could be a potential plot point.
MY FAVORITE END CREDITS!! I still tear up every time šŸ„ŗ The Original 6 just mean so much to me šŸ˜
Also I noticed for Tom Hiddleston's clip they chose Prince Loki in his golden horns, not villain Loki. That's a nice touch. šŸ’š
And there ends an era. Are there things that annoyed me? Yes, but overall I still feel like it was a solid ending for Tony and Cap (and Natasha but we got the Black Widow movie after).

Rewatching Iron Man
I hadnā€™t read or seen much comic book stuff when I was invited to watch Iron Man with my friends at the movie theater back in 2008. Iā€™d seen and enjoyed the DC cartoons as a kid and of course I knew of Iron Man, but I didnā€™t know anything about him except that he looked like a rubber chicken version of Dr. Doom.
Tumblr media
All this to say, Iron Man launched me into the world of comic books and superheroes. I was hooked from then on and I still love comics today. This movie quite literally changed my life, even if the change wasnā€™t as profound as most life changes.
Obviously, Iā€™m biased.
Tumblr media
But then something genuinely surprising happened.
Somewhere along the line Iā€™ve forgotten how to put down my critical analysis of media and not only was I pleasantly surprised at the great writing still hitting the mark, but I was able to notice the superb cinematography, something Iā€™d missed through no less than 3 rewatches. I mean, of course thereā€™s the surface-level awesomeness like the entire opening sequence with its fluid transitions or the perfectly tense scene where Pepper is collecting data from Obadiahā€™s files, but even beyond this facade lies near perfection.
Tumblr media
That moment when the missile lands next to Tony in the desert, the camera does a short, quick zoom with a zshooom sound and itā€™s just so reminiscent of comics and the idea of being hyper-aware in a high-stress moment.
Tumblr media
When Obadiah has Tony paralyzed and is giving his evil monologue, everything is perfect. The angled shot, the lighting, RDJā€™s violet veins, Bridgeā€™s cartoon-villain dress and demeanor. It all comes together in this scene and despite the minimal camera work, the room seems to be spinning as the monologue goes on.
Tumblr media
These are still pretty surface level things, but throughout the film thereā€™s just a masterful execution of every element ā€” lighting, costume & makeup, camera angles ā€” just everything is absolutely seamless for 99% of the movie. Itā€™s kind of insane to think about a blockbuster superhero movie being so technically well-executed!
One thing in particular that caught my attention and stayed pretty true throughout the movie is the fact that this movie doesnā€™t follow Tony Stark. In almost every scene with Tony, the camera is following another character. This does two things: it lets the audience know things that Tony doesnā€™t, which helps build tension, yadda, yadda; and it makes a distinction between Tony Stark and Iron Man. Because when Tony Stark is in his suit, then the camera begins to follow him. Even the final shot of the movie plays to this, finally ā€” finally ā€” focusing on Tony Stark and Tony Stark alone, as he declares he is Iron Man.
Tumblr media
Fucking chefā€™s kiss. Are you kidding me?! This movie was so fucking good; thatā€™s why itā€™s one of my favorite MCU movies of all time, despite being the first. (We donā€™t talk about Hulk in this household.)
Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark. I found it a bit funny that at times the makeup crew tries to harken Downey back to his teen acting days with the extremely glossy eyelashes, but other than that it holds up overall and I would even go as far as to say that we probably havenā€™t had a stand alone superhero movie that was as good as Iron Man since Iron Man.Ā
Itā€™s just so damn unique; I can see exactly how it gripped the world with its melding of humor and action and reality and just everything we were all feeling at that moment, without shoving it down our throats that this is what we needed. Like, god, canā€™t one of these rich guys turn good instead of evil for once? Canā€™t someone get fed up and save us already? Are we finally getting a superhero movie as good as whatā€™s on WB Kids??
And then Iron Man swoops in, dripping in sarcasm and long-lost teen lust, acting as though itā€™s the most natural thing in the world for him to be a rich guy in a mech suit, and ultimately delivering us unto a new age of entertainment.
.
.
.
The elephant in the room
Okay, yes, letā€™s talk about Rhodey. I remember when he was replaced; I was so upset. I felt that Terrence Howard was the absolute best choice for Rhodey and that he did an impeccable job opposite RDJ. Rewatching the filmā€¦god damn it, itā€™s still very true! Whyā€™d you have to do it, Terrence? Why?! You were beautiful as you soared so highā€¦
Tumblr media
Listen, I like Don Cheadle as much as the next person, and did back in 2009 too. But he is not a good Rhodey. I feel like there are many other black actors who would have done the role better and I half-remember people throwing around Denzel Washingtonā€™s name as a ā€œbetterā€ suggestion. Personally, Iā€™d have gone with someone closer to Howardā€™s look, like maybe Jamie Foxx or someone.
Tumblr media
The fact of the matter is that while the character is a military guy, one of the main reasons heā€™s friends with Stark is because heā€™s a progressive, more laid-back and approachable kind of military guy; heā€™d almost have to be for his work as a liaison with civilian organizations. Both Cheadle and Washington have such stern looksā€¦it just doesnā€™t fit. (To be clear, I think Cheadle has done a good job with the role; I just think Howard wouldā€™ve done it perfectly. God it hurt to hear him say, ā€œNext time, baby.ā€)
I mean, this is just my opinion and I know that Cheadle has millions of fans for his role, but I just donā€™t see it and never have. Terrence Howard is part of what makes the first Iron Man so great. But, cā€™est la vie.
.
.
.
So, Iron Man ā€” Great Success!Ā
Tumblr media
I guess I should rate these but Iā€™m afraid thereā€™s going to be a trendā€¦
10/10 for Iron Man!!!
Tumblr media
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Next week, Iā€™ll see The Incredible Hulk, which I am only watching out of respect for the timeline.
But actually, I liked this movie well enough and thought Edward Norton was a great casting choice. Weā€™ll see if it holds up because itā€™s been probably a decade since I last saw it.

Later, Thor saves Jane from a speeding car and admits to being intrigued by her bravery. Iron Man delivers the A.I.M. members to Jimmy Woo at the Vault. Jimmy reports an accident last week and explains the need for better containment. Iron Man leaves without further discussion. In the vault, Iron Man defeats Crimson Dynamo and Blizzard, then activates the self-destruct sequence and flies away. The vault explodes, and Iron Man is caught in the blast and thrown into the mountains. JARVIS reports a breakout in the cube and the helicarrier needs a new Iron suit. part 2
10 Years ago, Nick Fury and Franklin Hall discussed the Super Soldier project in SHIELD. Hall caused an explosion during an experiment with graviton particles and woke up cuffed to a hospital bed. He activated his gravity powers, and demanded to see Fury, but fell unconscious due to sleeping gas in the room. In the present day, he is released from his imprisonment and asks what is happening, Baron Zemo tells him that he's been there for six years and Franklin has been there longer than him. Graviton and Fury face each other, and the Fury pulls out a gun but is thrown away by Graviton. Graviton wants revenge on Fury for imprisoning him. He crushes his bones but is interrupted by Thor. Fury falls with the Raft, but he is caught by Wasp. Thor arrives and challenges Graviton to a fight.
Iron Man Mark VI crashes on a farm, orders JARVIS to access Mark VII's armor, and flies to fight Graviton. Fury leads the mission, and Ant-Man asks about the villain. Fury says it's Franklin Hall, rest classified. Thor attacks Graviton but fails. Hulk arrives at a dinner and leaves Samson with the staff. Sees news of Thor fighting Graviton. Hulk talks to Bruce and agrees to save lives if he's a force for good, not just a monster.
At the harbor, the fight continues which makes Wasp annoyed and helps Graviton forces Thor under the ocean and overpowers Wasp. Iron Man attacks Graviton, scanning him before being pulled into space. Giant Man grabs Graviton, warning Wasp to stay out of the fight. Graviton frees himself and Thor escapes Graviton's force. Graviton reaches Fury grabs him and crushes him, revealing him to be a LMD. Fury is hiding behind containers. Thor ambushes Graviton, causing him to fall and release his grip on the city. Iron Man joins the fight and blasts Graviton with his unibeam. Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, and Iron Man surround Graviton, who pushes them away. The Hulk arrives and pushes Graviton into the harbor. The rest arrive at the scene, while Hulk attacks Graviton withstanding his Gravitational powers. Graviton prevails and forcing everyone to the ground, Hulk tries to stand. Ant-Man uses a red ant to distract Graviton while Iron Man, Giant-Man, Wasp, Hulk, and Thor unleash powerful attacks. Wasp finishes off Graviton with a sting, leaving him exhausted and defeated.
Thor suggests celebrating their victory against Graviton. S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives to capture the Hulk, but Iron Man defends him. Fury informs them that 74 supervillains have escaped and invites them to S.H.I.E.L.D. to discuss the next steps. Iron Man believes they can defeat the villains if they work together as a team and suggests the name "Avengers." Quartermain reports to Fury that Graviton was not the only one responsible for the breakout.
Okay, a lot happen in this episode, but sadly it another one of those episodes where I don't necessarily have a lot to say about because of how heavily action focus and because it's mostly set up. The Avengers officially form. Fury prove himself to be more of an antagonistic force. It is good set up, you see several villains in the background escape and even a little bit of what they can do. The Leader for example gets a good set up showing his cunning and his discussion to bid his time and not directly engage in the battle will pay off latter, but for now that's it just set up.
I do find it sad that this cartoon for children, is doing far planning and being able to demonstrate that in just it's visual storytelling then the MCU is doing right now. Clearing coming with a plan and respect for the source material.
Character wise Thor and Hulk probably get the most. Thor expresses is ennui about Asgard's unending battles and feeling much more comfort on earth because he is feeling like he's actually accomplishing when protecting people there rather than just the unending cycle that's on Aagard. Hulk get something in the it feels good to be a hero but also in his agreement with the Banner persona where Hulk want to be the dominant personality.
Middleverse written by Adam Beechen
During lunch, Kurt, Scott, Jean, Evan, and Kitty discuss going to a party. Scott thinks it's too dangerous, but everyone else wants to go. Kurt's tail pops out, proving Scott's point. Kurt tells Scott to loosen up, but Scott tells Kurt to stop goofing around. Kurt teleports away and breaks his hologram disguise. Kurt hides in a lab and triggers an alarm. The lab explodes, and Rogue finds a device that survived the blast. During a struggle, she accidentally zaps Kurt with it, and he disappears. Kurt is now trapped in another dimension with phantom images of other students. Meanwhile, Jean and Scott hear reports of a blue demon ghost. Scott tries to contact Kurt but can't find him. They encounter the Blob and Avalanche, and Scott attacks Avalanche when they won't tell him what happened to Kurt. Principal Darkhƶlme breaks up the fight and takes Jean and Scott to her office.
Kurt is panicking trying to find a way out. Toad, meanwhile has found the devise and zaps every bit of furniture away with it. He jumps out of the window when he hears Darkhƶlme, Jean and Scott coming. Jean and Scott witness Toad zap Raven's car. Kurt teleports and briefly appears in the office. The X-Men go after Toad. Kurt meets Forge, who created the "Middleverse" pocket dimension and has been trapped there since the 1970s. Forge creates a device to help Kurt return and gives instructions on how to save them.
The X-Men capture Toad who tells them that Kurt is missing. Rogue admits to doing something to Kurt and takes them to the lab. Kitty and Evan discover that Kurt is trapped in a pocket dimension. Cyclops wants to destroy the device. Kitty suggests shorting out the device instead of destroying it. Kurt uses the gadget that Forge made for him and ports in to say "Reset. Don'tā€¦" before he disappears again. Scott figures they are meant to reset it. Forge and Kurt need more power to be able to port back through the portal to get home. Kurt teleports them to the car.
Kurt and Forge use the car's battery to drive through the portal, smashing the gizmo and running straight into the Blob. As the gizmo is destroyed, the Brotherhood flees the scene. Rogue watches as the X-Men and Forge leave the lab. Scott invites Forge to stay at Xavier's, but he declines and decides to go home instead. The X-Men pack into Scott's convertible and Kurt and Scott apologize to each other. Scott admits he was wrong and they all agree to attend the party.
This was another episode that was just fine. It was mostly highlight in animation. Again, I will say this show excels in storyboards. It knows how to frame it's "camera" so even just scenes where characters are just talking things look interesting.
Character focus there's more on Rogue this episode foreshadowing her eventual turn to the X-Men.
Also this episode really made me question is how much and made me laugh is like, how much Principal stuff Mystique has to do. There's just something about the implications of that.
Something I found off about this episode was the lighthearted way it treated it's ending with forge. He's so nonchalant about the whole thing. He's just gonna walk home and he just makes a joke about missing curfew. Then everyone else just shrugs and leaves too. I know this is a kids show but it feels like such an under reaction.
So far Evolution set up seems to have character focus with one off stories and it's so far worked.

listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.
like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

Watching Nick Fury Agent of Shield (1998) and on par with the others. Generation X is probably the best so far of the older Marvel films.
Graphics are, as with the others, on par with 1990s bad cg lol
And terrible acting from Hasselhoff like usual šŸ˜†

Reevaluating Captain Marvel in 2023
This is quickie.
Did a rewatch of Captain Marvel for an essay on where to go with the character in The Marvels, and you know what? I didn't dislike the movie when I first saw it, I thought it was closer to the center of the pack of the MCU at the time rather than peak, but its aged like fine wine. With all the discussion about gaslighting, "cults" and diasporic peoples that I've absorbed since it first came out, not only is it a fun romp, I'd say its comparable to Civil War in how it plays with identity, loyalty, and the dehumanizing messiness of war. Killer soundtrack too.
I never read Larson's portrayal as "stilted" or "cold" but it definitely reaffirmed that this is very much if not even more of a "single screen" experience for a superhero movie. If you're not watching her face or body language or listening to subtle shifts in her voice, you're missing a lot of what's going on. Its very Clint Eastwood in its austerity and subtlety. It also makes me think we're doing a massive disservice to other superhero actors if we're not paying closer attention to their technique. Who are we not appreciating because we're too focused on the spectacle and have fallen out of the habit of paying attention to the finer details of acting craft?
Also, speaking as someone who has long been a found family "uncle" to a precocious little girl, I could not help but see my "niece" in the scene of young Carol getting back up on her feet, bloodied but unbroken, and swaggering towards the camera covered in grime and smirking.

I've entered my Marvel phase. Don't know how long it will last but I'm currently doing a re-watch of all Marvel movies. Missing the old times and old Avengers.
