I wanted to honor #BlackHistoryMonth by highlighting some of the African American/Black Pro Wrestling pioneers and legends. For today's post I wanted to spotlight the third of famed Black Women's wrestling sisters The "African Black Cat" Marva Scott (November 21, 1937 - August 15th, 2003.)
Scott was the youngest sister of Babs Wingo and Ethyl Johnson. And as it was with her sisters, she was trained by legendary Women's Champion Mildred Burke.
Aside from her working with and against her sisters and other Black women talent, there isn't much else about her that I could find. I'll update if I find anything else out.

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH ! “GORDON PARKS: THE NEW TIDE, EARLY WORK 1940-1950″ OPENS TODAY AT THE ADDISON GALLERY OF AMERICAN ART IN ANDOVER, MA Miss Rosen for AnOther
Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was a singular figure in every sense of the word, transcending every boundary foisted upon him as a black man coming of age in Jim Crow America. Now, Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940–1950, a new exhibition in Washington, looks back at the groundbreaking first decade of his career, during which he rose to become the first African-American photographer at LIFE magazine.
Hailing from Fort Scott, Kansas, Parks decided to become a photographer while working as a waiter in a railroad dining car and looking through discarded copies of magazines like Vogue and Look. At the age of 25, Parks purchased a Voigtländer Brilliant, which he later called his “choice of weapon”, and taught himself to become a professional portrait photographer and photojournalist.

“He encontrado una caza.”
“No te atrevas a insultar mi ciudad, Dean.
No había conversaciones privadas.

While I love wrestling, I have to admit it’s just recently that I’ve begun researching in order to know more about the female pioneers of the sport, past the Fabulous Moolah and more recently Mildred Burke. Sisterhood of the Squared Circle: The History and Rise of Women’s Wrestling is a good resource, by the way. In the Mildred Burke chapter, (Ethel Johnson, Marva Scott, Babs Wingo, Louise Greene, Kathleen Wimberly and Ramona Isbell are mentioned) You can cut your eyes at me when I say women had more obstacles having and maintaining careers as professional wrestlers in the Western World but on some level you, too, know it’s true.
Some of my favorite entertainers in the ring from my childhood included women of color like the biracial badass, ultimate heel (and queen of my heart forever) Aja Kong. I remember the pride I had seeing Jacqueline win the WWE Women’s Championship when it was reintroduced in 1998 (the first!) and then the cruiser-weight title belt later. (do you remember the dab she did before accepting her place in the WWE hall of fame?! ICON.) There was also Midnight with her gorgeous bodybuilder physique, who often came around with Booker T and Stevie Ray when they were better known together as Harlem Heat.
Sapphire and (Queen!) Sharmell who worked the scene as managers in different eras of wrestling for Dusty Rhodes and Booker, who also saw some ring action. I think about later on Awesome Kong dominating everywhere she went, Alicia Fox being the first and only African American woman to hold the WWE Diva’s championship, with Naomi being the first African American woman to win a WWE title at Wrestlemaina, Sasha Banks is one of the best heels in the business and Ember Moon killing it at everything she does.
Tumblr media
On the indie scene Marti Belle, Nicole Savoy are women you should enjoy watching, alongside the “Blasian Assassin”, Mya Yim. Oh and Brandi Rhodes?! YASSSS. I’m a newer fangirl of Kiera Hogan and would channel her super kick any day all day if I could. Faye Jackson is fun to watch too and she memes herself! I LIVE! There is a legacy of Black women doing the damn thing in wrestling and there is finally a documented effort via film that explores the pioneers that set the foundation. I’m excited. You should be excited. We all should be excited. When I saw a trailer for this film I knew I had to write about it.

Cicely Tyson, atriz vencedora do Emmy e Tony, morre aos 96 anos
Tumblr media

I wanted to honor #BlackHistoryMonth by highlighting some of the African American/Black Pro Wrestling pioneers and legends. For today's post I wanted to shed light on the woman who is known as the First Lady of African American Wrestling: Ethyl Johnson (May 14, 1935 - September 14, 2018.)
Trained by legendary Women's champion Mildred Burke, Johnson (with her two sisters Babs Wingo and Marva Scott) is considered the first true African American women's wrestling superstar. Billed as “The biggest attraction to hit girl wrestling since girl wrestling began!” Johnson would face off against not only her fellow African American women's wrestlers but also matched up against white women including her trainer Mildred Burke for the Women's Championship.
Johnson's repertoire included a standing dropkick and a flying head scissors, moves not seen from many wrestlers during this era both male and female. Not only was she an amazing athlete, she was seen as a sex symbol as a pinup.
She would continue to working for such companies as Big Time Wrestling, Capitol Wrestling Corporation (WWWF) and finally the American Wrestling Association. Her last match came in 1976 against her younger sister Marva Scott. She would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.

LAST WEEK ON VIEW AT THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART GORDON PARKS: THE NEW TIDE - EARLY WORK 1940-1950 Miss Rosen for AnOther Online
