This is a brief photoshoot of band black midi following the release of their 2021 album Cavalcade. The cover is for a magazine called ele-king and black midi was interviewed with the likes of Black Country, New Road and Squid, being honored as the bands of the future. Stepping away from the sound of their debut album Schlagenheim, Cavalcade embraces more of an electrifying prog-jazz approach, just as mathy as one would want a black midi album to be though. It’s comprised of fun songs of riddling lyricism such as John L & Hogwash and Balderdash. Gorgeous ballads such as Marlene Dietrich and Dethroned. My favorite song, Chondromalacia Patella is a perfect mix of both. I’d advise all to listen if you’re looking to expand your taste in rock music.

The Beginning: The Virgin Maruja
Dear whoever this may find,
This is my first blog entry. I honestly don't know how blogs work, so I'm treating this like a diary.
Let's get a few things out of the way. I have bad opinions a lot of the time; so, this is a safe space for take-backs and apologies. This is a disclaimer for my sister if she finds this; hey girl, I will be cussing in this, so don't snitch. Also, I'm really horny (not to be freaky). So, trust, I will be on this app thirsting over everyone I meet. Me when I don't pass the Bechdel test.
If you want to know your wonderful hostess, I'm Maruja. I'm a 17 year old girl in her junior year of high school. I'm also brown (Mexican), so if I say I hate white people, don't take it to heart.
I would sit up here and lie to you and say I have hobbies and interests. But I don't. That's why I'm here, duh. Don't be stupid. The closest I got to a hobby was reading, but I can't read. And also crocheting, but I don't got the passion for it. Actually, I don't have passion for anything.
Anyways, quick facts. I don't watch shows or movies. I love listening to music. I have a FAB. I can't cuss at home. I love hot men. I love to troll online. I failed my drivers test and drive illegally. And I have catholic guilt and an impending sense of doom.
So this my blog. Enjoy it y'all.
Song of the post:
Sincerely, Bruja Maruja

Connla’s Well, Maruja (2024)
Perhaps it is my fault that I cannot see past the clichés, that I can’t enjoy Maruja for what they are: an absolutely fine – competent, even – but completely derivative post-rock band. It doesn’t help that the vocals here, which reek of obnoxious, self-satisfied south London slam poetry (aye, I know they’re from Manchester), push me further away.
Pick: ‘The Invisible Man’

While there are still a bunch of 2023 releases I haven't checked out yet, here are my top 30 or so of the year thus far. Not sure why the Smoulder art isn't downloading.

Maruja made quite the buzz this year in both the UK’s underground circuit, as well as among sweaty music nerds online (it helps that it’s extremely Fantano-core). That said, the group does pull off this dark, noisy, ambient vibe quite well - exceptionally well, even. It’s not always clear what Joe’s ranting about in his drawled declamations, but that’s not entirely the point either. More than anything, the addition of some fairly heavy-handed saxophone instrumentation to the noise-punk formula is a welcome one; Zeitgeist is a blast from start to finish.
