Oh For a Muse of Fire! Epilogue
I want to thank everyone for the lovely support. I saw a couple questions about the other characters in the comment section of the last one and wanted to clear up a couple of things. Crystal=Argyle (he picked the name because he thought it sounded cool), Onyx=Dimitri (like @n0-1-important guessed in part 11). Diamond and his family were all OCs more on them here. Michelle (the whiny chick in the art class) is the only other OC. I tried as much as possible to include characters from the show when I could.
And to answer @ goodolefashionedloverboi‘s question: Jonathan and Nancy are in couple’s therapy and are doing better.
And then one final thing to explain (the curses of doing a WIP and posting it one at a time not every thread I put down got picked up again, oops!) is the garnet rings. I love gem stones and geology. It fascinates me so much so that I took it as an elective in high school. When I was researching a fic (don’t remember which one now) I was looking at Eddie’s rings. And a lot of people were making replicas with hard stones like hematite, onyx, or something that didn’t have cuts or facets. But Eddie’s ring sparkles. It’s clearly a gemstone. So I went looking up grey or black gemstones. I found a couple it could be but they weren’t discovered until the 90s (and while the ACTUAL stone the prop maker used could be that, I COULDN’T call it that). And then I found a grey garnet. It was a perfect match. It sparkles the way his does, the different shades it gets from the show, spot on. Hence the garnet.

Two years later:
Variety Interview with Corroded Coffin
Max Mayfield: Hello, can you guys introduce yourselves for the people that have been hiding under a rock for the last two years?
They all laugh.
Jeff: I’m Jeff Lawrence, I’m rhythm guitar.
Gareth: I’m Gareth Hughes, I’m on drums.
Brian: I’m Brian Martin, I’m the bass guitarist.
Eddie: And I’m Eddie Munson, frontman, lead guitar, lead vocalist, and songwriter.
MM: That’s a lot of titles for one person.
JL: That’s because he’s the most dramatic out of all of us. He has to have allll the titles. Can’t share with the rest of us.
EM: Hey!
They all laugh again.
BM: Hey, you know it’s true.
EM: Yeah...but you’re giving away all my secrets right off the bat. Can’t you save some for later in the interview.
The other three look at each other.
JL, BM, GH: No.
Eddie throws his arms in the air.
EM: I’m telling Steve!
The other three look mock frightened for all of three seconds before they start laughing at him.
JL: You know Steve would agree with us.
Eddie pouts
MM: Can you tell us who Steve is?
Eddie fiddles with the singular ring on his right hand, looking down, bashfully. It one that I haven’t seen. Everyone is familiar with the the three chunky rings on his left hand. But this one is on his ring finger. The grey stone flashes as he plays with it.
EM: He’s the love of my life and my muse.
JL: He’s an art teacher back home.
BM: He’s our Eddie wrangler.
GH: He’s our band mascot.
I laugh.
MM: He sounds pretty special. How did you guys meet?
JL: We all went to high school together, actually.
MM: Oh, so were you high school sweethearts, then?
Eddie laughs.
GH: Yeah, no. He laughs.
BM: Let’s just say they started off on the wrong foot.
JL: The wrong everything, let’s be honest.
EM: Not my proudest moment. I was doing a favor for a family friend being a live model for an art class about five years later and assumed the worst about him.
MM: You mean there are actual art of you naked out there?
Eddie blushes.
EM: Several pieces in fact. But my favorite is Stevie’s. It’s still hanging up in our house in my studio.
GH: I’ve seen it. It’s not gross or anything.
JL: It won best in show at the art gala it was featured in.
BM: I think he’s totally wasted as an art teacher. He could be making more than we do selling his art work. But he loves working with kids.
MM: Sounds like the perfect guy.
EM: scoffs I love Steve, but he can be the most basic bitch. And he tends to be overprotective too.
GH: But we are here to talk about the new album.
MM: Fair enough. So tell me about working on Silent Killer. This is your second album, is that correct?
JL: Yeah, our self titled debut album just went double platinum. We knew going in it was going to be a tough act to follow.
GH: When we went platinum the first time, our manager Murray Bauman sent black flowers to all the record labels that passed on us.
EM: It was very suitably bitchy. It’s why he’s our manager.
MM: Certainly sounds like it. Do you guys deviate from your first album’s style in this one?
They look at each other and Eddie shrugs
EM: I mean, not really. It’s a more somber album to be sure. There was a song that we wanted to include on Corroded Coffin but decided it didn’t fit with the overall theme of the album that made its way on this one.
MM: Which song is that?
BM: Thorns and Thistles. It’s the song that got us our agent in the first place.
JL: Yeah. Murray was mad when the record label didn’t want to use it this time round. He fought tooth and nail to get on the album.
EM: Have you heard it yet?
I nod.
MM: Yeah. It’s beautifully heartbreaking. You say your label didn’t want to use it?
BM: They thought it was too sad.
JL: So to prove them wrong we sent it out as our first single, before we even started really working on the album.
MM: It had already gone gold before you announced the new record. That must have really got stuck in their craw.
EM: We’ve been laughing all the way to the bank.
MM: You guys won a Grammy for Song of the Year for The Jester and the King and Best New Artist. How was that for you?
BM: God I don’t know which of us bawled more on that stage. But it was everything we hoped for.
JL: Winning Song of the Year was a life changer. But no one thought we were going to win Best New Artist.
MM: No?
Eddie shakes his head.
EM: It rarely goes to a rock artist, especially a metal one. Everyone thought it would go to the kid...what’s his name...? He snaps his fingers.
JL: JJ Jenner.
EM: That’s the one. Fifteen year old kid with the pipes of an angel. Everyone, including us thought it would be him.
MM: Oh, I remember now, they put the kid’s reaction to losing on the jumbotron or whatever they call their big screen.
GH: I almost felt sorry for him.
Eddie grins.
EM: Almost.
MM: When you do red carpet events, Eddie, you bring your two lesbian friends with you, while the rest of the band brings their partners. Is there a reason you don’t bring yours? Especially since I learned your partner’s name is Steve.
All the members of the band shift uncomfortably in their seats, stealing glances at each as they silently decide who is going to answer the question.
MM: Oh. I feel like I stepped on a sensitive topic. I didn’t mean to.
Gareth clears his throat.
GH: Steve’s privacy is very important to us. There are times he would like to go to these things with Eddie...
JL: But he still gets attacks and can’t. He looks down at his hands. So he goes with the girls dress shopping and helps pick out their outfits for the night.
Eddie looks like he’s going to tear up.
EM: We’re working on it. He knew going to our relationship that this might become an issue but I always do what I can to make it up to him the moment I get home.
They all look somber, so I decide to change the direction of the interview.
MM: What’s next for the Corroded Coffin boys?
They brighten up almost immediately.
BM: Touring. We’ve got an American tour this spring and then a European tour this summer.
MM: Is there a reason you decided to wait on the European tour until summer?
Eddie blushes and the rest of the band nudge him playfully.
EM: It’s so Steve can come with us. He can’t leave during the school year, but he likes touring with us when it’s out for summer break.
MM: Ah ha.
The conversation turns to non-band related things again and I watch how close they are. It’s great to see a band that are still friends after years of playing together. Even though they’ve only been big for two years, they have been playing for twelve.
Let’s hope that they stay that way for the next twenty.

Two Track Analysis
In my previous blog, we discussed the basic concepts of music theory, melody, rhythm, and harmony. Let’s put our newfound knowledge into practice, shall we? In this blog, I will be breaking down and analysing two tracks that I personally love and what I appreciate about them, discussing each of their rhythms such as meter, and their melody and harmony, including their instrumentation and what makes them fall into their respective genres.
Beetlebum
This song is by the English alternative rock band ‘Blur’. Written by Damon Albarn, the lead vocalist and released in January 1997 as the lead single for their 5th album ‘Blur’. The track is 5 minutes and 5 seconds long. Alternative rock emerged in the mid 80s, it includes the elements typically associated with classic rock such as similar instrumentation and distorted melodies, although the energy of alternative rock tends to be more laid back than pop or rock, with lyrical content less broad and more subversive often associated with the rejection of mainstream commercialism and purposefully appealing to a smaller audience.
Instrumentation
Lead vocalist – Damon Albarn
Lead guitar and backing vocals - Graham Coxon
Bass guitar- Alex James
Drums- Dave Rowntree
Intro
Time signature is 4/4 and 90BPM
In the key of C
Guitar plays first four bars of A5
Verse
Damon begins singing the main melody halfway through the 5th bar.
Verse lasts for 38 bars.
Drums and bass join in later than vocal and guitar at 0:34 seconds into the song, this gives the impression of a ‘buildup’ to the chorus.
Guitar plays A C F G Bb A twice through to the chorus
Bass plays riff.
Graham Coxon adds harmony, ‘answering’ to the lead vocal with adlibs.
Guitar crescendos and quickly overpowers the rest of the instrumental to get ready for the chorus.
Chorus
The first vocal line of the chorus ‘And when she lets me slip away’ is isolated to make a more impactful chorus for when the rest of the band joins back in.
The chorus lasts for approximately 40 seconds.
Chords are C, Bm, Am, F Am, F, Fm, C, Bm, Am, F, Am, F, Fm
The tempo of the chorus appears to be slow and laid-back, Beatles-influenced music and a mood that Albarn described as "sleepy" and "sexy."
Vocal is a higher pitch, in the vocalist’s ‘falsetto’ voice.
There are harmonies sang accompanying Albarn's vocal, “Oo” sounds, giving a dreamy, psychedelic feel to the chorus, in my opinion.
Verse 2
Guitar plays A5 alone once again as an introduction into the second verse.
Verse 2 is essentially the same melody and format although with different lyrics.
Chorus 2
Chorus is repeated with identical lyrics.
Bridge
The lyrics “he’s on, he’s on, he’s on it” repeated continuously through the bridge.
Alongside a guitar riff A C F G Bb A is played with the vocal line, with bass and drums accompaniment and a steady rhythm.
Outro
As Damon Albarn’s vocal gently drops out, Coxon's guitar gently repeats the riff.
Unusual sounds of voices and screeching are audible and progressively gets louder as the song fades out. This makes the listener feel uneased juxtaposed to the rest of the song
Eleanor Rigby
Written primarily by McCartney, Eleanor Rigby was released in 1966 as part of a double A-side single which also featured Yellow Submarine. Often described as a lament for the lonely, or a commentary on life in post-war Britain, it tells the story of a lonely woman who "died in the church and was buried along with her name". Baroque pop is a fusion genre that combines rock music with particular elements of classical music and the Beatles are known for experimenting with different styles and instrumentation despite being a rock and roll band. In this particular song there is an octet of studio musicians, comprising of four violins, two violas and two cellos, all performing a score composed by George Martin which is mainly what incorporates the classical sound of this song.
Instrumentation
Lead vocalist – Paul McCartney
Lennon and Harrison contributed to harmony vocals
four violins, two violas and two cellos played by studio musicians
Intro
Time signature is 4/4 and 136BPM
They key is in Em Dorian
The intro is essentially the chorus, an 8-bar phrase
The song begins right away, with the Beatles singing the lyrics in harmony with one another
opens with a C-major vocal harmony "Aah, look at all ...", and then shifts to E-minor (on "lonely people").
After, the violins play a descending melody
Verse
The verse melody is written in Dorian mode, using Em and C as the chords
McCartney sings vocal line solo, mostly ascending and descending in step movements
Syncopation is used in this song played by the strings and enforces discomfort, the notes happen before the beat which is unexpected
There is no percussionist within the song, Ringo Starr not being featured
Throughout the song the strings are playing staccato quarter beat chords, with occasional countermelodies. The staccato notes gives a frantic or uneasy feel to the listener, which is intended by the Beatles.
The cellos play broken chords through each vocal rest of the verse
Chorus
The vocal phrase from the intro is repeated twice, signifying the start of the chorus
Strings once again play a descending melody
in the chorus the cello has sustained notes moving down chromatically which evokes an uneasy feeling, due to this song being in Dorian mode which is a minor mode, we get a gloomy feeling, especially with the repeated vocal phrase
To me personally, the frantic playing of staccato notes on the strings over the sustained notes from the cellos after the vocal line mimics the sensation of rain, quickly falling 8th notes, adding to the grim sound of the song
Verse
The same ideas are repeated throughout the second verse
In this verse, there are fewer instruments on the drilling staccato chords and more playing sustained notes in thirds with the melody
‘Father McKenzie’ the staccato notes reappear
The final vocal line descends in melody, the strings repeat the melody almost mimicking to finally end the song.

Thomas Niederkrotenthaler is associate professor at the Suicide Research Unit at the Institute of Social Medicine, Center for Public Health, Medical University of Vienna. He is the co-chair of the International Association for Suicide Prevention's Media and Suicide Special Interest Group.
Reacting to suicidal revelations - is Piers Morgan right?
Research on suicide reporting suggests a surprising effect of Meghan's interview
by Dr Raj Persaud
Piers Morgan, a controversial TV host, has now left his national broadcasting position after expressing strong disbelief over Meghan’s confessions of suicidal thinking in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
BBC News reports that Piers Morgan continues to stand by his criticism of the Duchess of Sussex. Ofcom, a regulator of broadcasting in the UK, is investigating his comments after receiving 41,000 complaints from the British public.
The duchess apparently formally complained to ITV about Morgan's remarks. It is reported that she raised concerns about how Piers Morgan's sentiments affect the issue of mental health, and what it might do to others contemplating suicide.
Is Meghan correct in her reported analysis? Or is Piers Morgan right to stand by his comments?
Or, in discussing suicide during an Oprah Winfrey interview, did she in fact make it more likely that others will self-harm?
Media reporting of suicidal behaviour has been found to contribute to an increase in suicidal thinking and actual suicides in the population. At this point Piers Morgan may argue the duchess is wrong to criticise him, and has only herself to blame, if there is a spike in suicides following the interview.
Recent research found that Google searches for “How to kill yourself” significantly increased after the release of ‘13 Reasons Why’, a popular Netflix American teen drama on the aftermath of high school student's suicide. The study calculated there were 900 000 to 1.5 million more searches than expected, for that time of year, in just over two weeks following the release of the series.
Another study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in February 2020, estimated there were 195 additional suicide deaths among 10- to 17-year-old youths between April 1 and December 31, 2017, following the series’ release.
One of the first studies to investigate this effect, analysed 34 newspaper stories that reported on suicides, and found a 2.51% increase in suicide during the month of the publicity.
More worrying still, about the possible repercussions of the extensive reporting of Meghan’s suicidal thinking worldwide, is that, research by Professor Steven Stack, an expert on the sociology of suicide, based at Wayne State University, USA, found that studies measuring the presence of an entertainment celebrity in a suicide press report, are over 5 times more likely to find a copycat effect, while studies focusing on female suicide, were almost 5 times more likely to report a copycat effect, than other research investigating the impact of suicide reporting in the press.
Another example reported by Steven Stack is that in the year of the publication of a book which focused on self-harm via a particular method, suicide by that specific recommended method, increased 313% in New York City. In almost one third of cases a copy of the book was found at the scene of the suicide.
On average, following the media reporting of a suicide, approximately one third of persons involved in subsequent suicidal behavior appear to have seen the reporting of that suicide and may be copycat suicides.
The suicide of actress Marilyn Monroe was associated with a 12% increase in suicide.
One theory as to why reporting of a celebrity killing themselves or feeling suicidal, according to Professor Steven Stack, is that the vulnerable suicidal person may reason, ‘If a Marilyn Monroe with all her fame and fortune cannot endure life, why should I?’
Copycat suicides following media reporting of self-harm has been termed the ‘Werther Effect’, following a notorious historical incident after the publication in 1774 of a popular novel in which the hero kills himself. Entitled, The Sorrows of Young Werther the book by Goethe was rumoured to be responsible for a subsequent epidemic of suicide in young people. European authorities were so worried about its impact, that the book was banned in Copenhagen, Italy and Leipzig.
Goethe is reported to have commented on the phenomenon; “My friends … thought that they must transform poetry into reality, imitate a novel like this in real life and, in any case, shoot themselves; and what occurred at first among a few took place later among the general public …”
However, now new research suggests that, in fact, Meghan Markle in talking about suicide, may have indeed performed a positive service in terms of suicide prevention.
The study entitled, ‘Role of media reports in completed and prevented suicide: Werther v. Papageno effects’, refers to a ‘Papageno Effect’, which the authors claim may be the opposite of the ‘Werther Effect’, and happens when suicide rates go down following a particular kind of self-harm publicity.
The ‘Papageno Effect’, the authors explain, is based on Papageno's overcoming of a suicidal crisis in Mozart's opera ‘The Magic Flute’. If media reporting has a suicide-protective impact this should now be referred to as the ‘Papageno Effect’ the authors argue. In Mozart's opera, Papageno becomes suicidal upon fearing the loss of his beloved Papagena; however, he refrains from suicide because of three boys who draw his attention to alternative coping strategies.
Thomas Niederkrotenthaler and Gernot Sonneck from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, led a team who analysed all 497 suicide-related print media reports from the 11 largest Austrian nationwide newspapers, including the term suicide, between 1 January and 30 June 2005.
Reporting of individuals thinking about suicide (not accompanied by attempted or completed suicide) was associated with a decrease in national suicide rates. This study suggests that media items on suicidal thinking, perhaps as described by Meghan in her recent interview, formed a distinctive class of articles, which have a low probability of being potentially harmful.
The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that in marked contrast, media stories attempting to dispel popular public myths about suicide, in other words articles that you would have thought would be helpful, and were intended to be helpful as regards suicide, were associated with increases in suicide rates.
Other articles associated with increases in suicide rates include stories where the main focus was on suicide research, items containing contact information for a public support service and also the reporting of expert opinions.
In other words, all the previous so-called expert opinion of how the media ought to report suicide was not actually linked to drops in suicide rates, but instead increases.
The authors conclude that the actual reporting of suicidal thinking may contribute to preventing suicide. Therefore, it follows that whatever Piers Morgan may think or believe about the Meghan interview, the latest scientific research suggests she may have performed a public service in drawing attention to suicidal thinking.
One theory as to why this might be the case include the suggestion that reporting someone thinking about suicide enhances identification with the reported individual, and thus highlights the reported outcome as ‘going on living’.
This research suggests a new public health strategy as regards suicide prevention. This may be most effective when articles are published on individuals who refrained from adopting suicidal plans, and instead adopted positive coping mechanisms, despite suffering adverse circumstances.
The authors refer to this kind of press story as ‘Mastery of Crisis’. One example they quote: ‘Before [Tom Jones] had his first hit, he thought about suicide… and wanted to jump in front of an Underground train in London… In 1965, before he made the charts with “It's not unusual”, he thought for a second: “If I just take a step to the right, then it'll all be over”.’
Whatever else you may think of her, or the interview, the key question becomes, did Meghan exhibit ‘Mastery Of Crisis’?

Iditapod: Rainy Pass, Race Rookies, and Rohn Axe-Throwing
[sound of an axe hitting wood]
[men cheering]
Discordant voices: Ayyy! That was it! That was it hitting the bullseye
[theme music plays]
Casey Groves: Welcome to the Iditapod! It’s a podcast about dog mushing and the Iditarod, and… axe throwing? We’ll get to that in a few minutes. But first, here’s a word from our sponsor
[ad plays]
CG: Well, my friends, since the last time we talked, the more than four dozen sled dogs teams competing in the 2019 Iditarod have mushed, or are mushing, into the mountainous Alaska range. When mushers say these are the most technical sections of the trail, they mean it is an area where mistakes can be especially dangerous, and expert sled driving is of the utmost importance.
So, the Rainy Pass checkpoint on the frozen alpine Puntilla Lake, is a spot many mushers stop to prepare for the often tough trail ahead. But, not last years second place finisher Nic Petit, who stayed only a few minutes, long enough for race officials and veterinarians to check out his team and gear. In fact, looking at Petit’s checkpoint times on Iditarod.com, he hasn’t stayed more than a few minutes at any checkpoint in the face, except for Rohn, where he stayed a whopping 20 minutes. Instead, Petit has opted, as mushers will do sometimes, to avoid the hubbub of the checkpoints and camp his team out along the trail. They pick up straw, they pick up supplies from their drops bags, and they take that along with them down the trail and just do their own thing. That’s why, after having the lead earlier in the race, severals teams passed Petit on the way from Rohn down to Nikolai. That is a village on the upper Kuskokwim River, roughly 250 miles into the 1000 mile race.
While Petit rested from Rohn to Nikolai, the race GPS tracker shows the defending champ, the Norwegian by way of Willow, Joar Leifseth Ulsom, passed Petit’s team, as did several others, including Bethel’s Pete Kaiser, Montanan Jessie Royer, and Two River’s musher Aliy Zirkle. Ulsom was the first to arrive in Nikolai a little after 6:30 Tuesday morning. And, remember, the race just started Sunday in Willow with the race clock ticking, at the restart, so they’re covering a lot of ground here very quickly, as they do. And we’re looking forward to hearing more about how it went for the team’s runs from Rainy Pass to Rohn and Nikolai. While the race reached Nikolai Tuesday morning, we’re going to go back to Rainy Pass, where as Iditarod mushers make their way over the Alaska range, they find the last checkpoint for supplies and a rest at the Rainy Pass Lodge on Puntilla Lake. As Alaska Public Media’s Zachariah Hughes reports, it’s a good place to pause, maybe reflect, and definitely to prepare before heading towards the most technical sections of the trail.
[sounds of dogs and supplies moving]
Zachariah Hughes: Sarah Stokey pulls onto Puntilla Lake with a team of dogs that has been gradually climbing the Alaska Range.
Sarah Stokey: Hi
Unknown Voices: Bib number?
SS: 52
Voice 1: Perfect. We’re going to give you your bags here
Voice 2: Are you going to stay or are you going to rest? SS: I’m going to stay
V1: She’s gonna stay, ok
ZH: Stokey grabs three heavy drop bags full of supplies, and parks her dogs for a rest. She’s in good company, except for Nic Petit and Pete Kaiser, who flew through mid-morning, almost all of the teams at the front of the pack are taking a break. Checkpoint at the Rainy Point Lodge has a festive atmosphere. Frozen lake is covered with planes and helicopters that bring tourists for day trips, the rustic wooden building is ringed with picturesque mountain peaks. It’s not where Matt Hall would have chosen to stop, but he wanted a veterinarian to check out a dog’s toenail problem.
Matt Hall: Little noisy, but they rest good.
ZH: Hall came off the Yukon Quest a few weeks ago, and likes camping out with his team beyond the hubbub of checkpoints, but he knows that enough teams are likely to stop here that he can keep toward the front of the pack.
MH: It’s definitely an advantage, being toward the front early on, just because of that, you know, you get 20,000 dog feet over it, and 50 sleds, and it starts getting softer and softer, then as the heat of the day comes on to.
ZH: Hard packed, smooth trail that gets punchy and pulverized after heavy traffic is slower and more effort for the dogs. In the cool, early hours before many mushers had gone over, Linwood Fiedler says the trail heading up toward the Rainy Pass checkpoint was something to behold.
LF: I don’t think I’ve ever seen it better. It’s certainly one of the best trails ever. Yeah, I mean, it’s the Iditarod trail, but boy it’s pretty good shape.
ZH: Fiedler also wants to take advantage of the midday warmth, rest his dogs while the bright sun and relative warmth soften the trail.
LF: It’s just gonna get warmer and warmer and warmer, when it’s like this, 5 degrees, going up makes a huge difference. I mean, it’s just, you can just see that team kind of wilt [laughs] I mean, they’re like a car with no antifreeze in the radiator
ZH: After the lodge, the route keeps going up, until it hits Rainy Pass itself, it weaves back and forth, over a river, enveloped by steep mountain peaks on both sides. This year, trail crews had to build 20 bridge crossings over sections of open water. From Puntilla Lake, it’s 35 miles up and through the pass to the Rohn checkpoint. It’s a kind of dog driving that requires some finesse.
Jessie Royer: I’d have to say, my team is pretty controlled anyways.
ZH: Jessie Royer is in a good mood as she straws her dogs. It’s not just the pass that’s challenging, she says, what follows is the drops and turns of the gorge, and the bumps of the tunnels. Royer’s approach is to rest and charge her dogs, before embarking on the hours over the pass, but keep them moving, winding down their power, until all the technical stretches are behind them.
JR: I don’t stop until we get out of it all, so I do it all in one run. Cause otherwise, if you don’t if you stop in Rohn, you’re leaving with a fresh team right away on the buffalo tunnels, which is even worse. Buffalo tunnels is always worse than the gorge.
ZH: It’s a stage in the race when there’s strategy not just in reading the trail, but in using a dog teams relative restedness or fatigue to help navigate perilous terrain. From the Rainy Pass Lodge on the Iditarod Trail, I’m Zachariah Hughes.
Casey Groves: So between Rainy Pass and Nikolai, is the checkpoint of Rohn. To get there, the teams navigate some pretty treacherous sections, reaching the races highest elevation of 3,160 feet. I mean, it’s a mountain pass. You’re going on some pretty narrow trail, and there’s mountains and ravines, there are twists and turns, ups and downs, there’s some mushing on the edge of the ravine - it’s intense. If you want to get a look at it, I encourage you to google “Jeff King Dalzell Gorge”. The first video that should come up is from a very low snow year in 2014. Those sections of trail destroyed some sleds and destroyed some mushers dreams of reaching Nome that year. I first saw those sections of trail that same year, in 2014, from the safety of a helicopter. That was my rookie year on the Iditarod. But as a rookie, in the race, it must be daunting to hear the stories and then finally get up into the pass and see what you got yourself into. And, Jeff King’s a four time champion. He’s very experienced musher. He’s run the Iditarod as much as anybody competing in the race these days. But, in addition to the really competitive slate of mushers in this year’s Iditarod, which includes five past champions (King, one of them), nearly one in five Iditarod mushers this year is brand new to the race. As Ben Matheson reports, the ten rookies each set out on the trail with a deep range of skills and experiences.
Ben Matheson: 21 year old Martin Apayauq Reitan is coming off of Yukon Quest, in which he took home Rookie of the Year honors. But, he had a tough time managing his sleep during the race, something he wants to improve upon in his second 1000 mile race.
Martin Apayauq Reitan: We need to have a good time, and we’ll see if I’ll be able to race or if I’ll oversleep again, and then, you know, I’ll have to adjust my expectations, but I’ll try my best and have fun.
BM: Reitan lives on the north slope of Kaktovik, where, among other things, he guides polar bear viewing expeditions. After the race, he’ll skip the jet and instead mush his team north, to Kotzebue, where his dad will run the Kobuk 440. After that, it’s hundreds of miles north to and to the east, to Kaktovik, the same epic trip he made two years ago with his dad. Mushing is also a family affair for Jessica Klejka, who grew up the oldest of 7 kids running dogs in Bethel. Her passion for mushing also overlaps with her professional life - she’s a veterinarian. But Klejka says her professional knowledge can cause her to overthink things with her dogs.
Jessica Klejka: And so I see something happen and, you know, like if I toss a dog a piece of fish and he doesn’t eat it right away, I start going okay wait, what’s going on, why doesn’t he want to eat the fish. And I start smelling the fish, like is it okay, and - but for the most part I think it’s very advantageous because I get a lot of calls from mushers the last few weeks before Iditarod, asking a lot of questions, and it’s kind of fun.
BM: For more than two decades, Ed Hopkins from Tagish Yukon Territory, has been running the Yukon Quest, notching several top five finishes. But, after watching his wife, Michelle Phillips, running the Iditarod in recent years, he says the Iditarod temptation became hard to ignore.
Ed Hopkins: Actually, you get the itch, and I got the itch
BM: His team has already completed a 1000 mile race this year. Phillips ran the team to a 4th place finish in the Quest last months. Hopkins says the race-hardened dogs know more about the trail than he does.
EH: I’m a rookie in a lot of senses, like I don’t know some of the little hidden things that are out there that give advantage to a lot of other people, so, I’m just gonna go and do my own thing pretty much.
BM: Norwegian Niklas Wikstrand has worked with Pete Kaiser in Bethel for a few years, and gotten his race experience in brutal, Kuskokwim river conditions, and he’s been on a specific schedule to get the dogs the right racing experience.
Niklas Wikstrand: Going a little slower, rest enough, and that’s our teams main goal, to rest and run quite conservative, and make sure that as many dogs get to Nome, and just keeping the dogs happy and healthy.
BM: As the rookies navigate the races most technical and steep sections in the first couple days in the race, they’ll be one step closer to joining the elite club of Iditarod finishers. I’m Ben Matheson, in Anchorage.
Casey Groves: These rookie standings are definitely subject to change as teams leapfrog each other here in the race. At least check, Ed Hopkins was leading the rookies in 32nd place; then Richie Beattie in 34th; Sebastien Dos Santos Borges in 37th. There’s Jessica Klejka, who we just heard from, in 38th place; Niklas Wikstrand in 41st, Blair Braverman in 42nd, Ryan Santiago in 46th, Alison Lifka in 47th, Martin Apayauq Reitan in 48th, and bringing up the rear, in 52nd place, Victoria Hardwick.
At least check, all the rookies in this years race still yet to reach the checkpoint of Rohn, and I want to mention Rohn real quick. It’s not really a community or anything, they’ve listed it at population zero, it’s basically just a cabin or a roadhouse they call it, and definitely the population swells when it’s an Iditarod checkpoint. They’ve got veterinarians there to checked the dogs, they’ve got race officials - and of course, they’ve got mushers coming in. And, different Iditarod checkpoints have totally different flavors. Some are hectic, full of visitors and volunteers; others are literal ghost towns, nestled quite deliberately in the middle of the wilderness.
The Rohn checkpoint is the latter, with hardly any amenities or distractions. The volunteer staffers have to find ways to amuse themselves, in the lulls, when there are no mushers - it might be a little boring, they’re trying to entertain themselves. This year, as Alaska Public Media’s Zachariah Hughes found out, they are throwing axes.
[sound of an axe hitting wood, men cheering]
Men’s voices: Aha! That was it? That was the bullseye, dead center, that’s perfect!
Zachariah Hughes: Like, what’s the right technique for doing it? Like, when you’re giving someone an introductory lesson, how do you explain it?
Man’s Voice [Unknown]: Uh, normally I ask, you know, right or left handed. If you’re right handed, you want your left hand on the bottom, right hand on top, you know I try to keep everything in a straight line and use your whole body.
ZH: What are you guys doing right now? MV: Axe throwing? Yeah, we’re axe throwing
[sound of an axe, throwing]
MV: [loudly] Yeah! That was it, that was perfect
ZH: The Rohn checkpoint is mostly just a cabin, it’s in a clearing in a pretty wooded area, just after the Dalzell gorge, near a river, they’ve got some arctic ovens set up, some snow machines, there’s an outhouse, but - mostly it’s a one room cabin from 1910 that the Parks Service maintains. Nowadays, it’s a shelter cabin.
Woman’s Voice: We find something to do, we tell our stories
ZH: Throw weapons
WV: Well, we don’t allow guns out when the mushers are here, but pre and post race we do a little target shooting. But, I asked Mark to bring an axe, because I’ve always wanted to do this. I’ve never done this before.
ZH: Oh, and you guys knew each other before this?
WV: I met him last summer at the lumberjack show.
ZH: Mm.
[sound of axe thudding]
ZH: The volunteers here have to be a little bit more hardy than at other places, because they’re left out here mostly unsupported, it’s basically camping.
WV: Well, there’s nobody lives here year round, so we all come out for Iditarod, because we like dogs, we like going to remote places in Alaska, meeting people from all over, and it’s a satisfaction of helping people get down the trail, whether it’s snow machining, or walking, or mushing dogs, so it’s a good camaraderie feeling of Alaska.
ZH: Do you like throwing the axe? WV: Yeah, it feels good. You should give it a try.
[sound of axe thudding, woman yells “nice!”]
Man’s Voice: And when you release, you want kind of to release high so the axe carries down into the target, because it’s heavy
ZH: Do you guys always do this every year, out here? MV: This is my first year, so no, I don’t think so? But maybe from now on [laughs] I got started in college as a collegiate sport, so it’s called the woodsmen’s team in college, and so I competed collegiately. Me personally, I ended up doing well enough at the end of my four years, I was able to go pro, and then I competed professionally and also did lumberjack shows.
ZH: Is that what brought you up to Alaska?
MV: Yeah, I did a show for Great Alaska Lumberjack Show in Ketchikan Alaska, I did that for four years, one of my good friends, Tina Sheer, owns a show in May, and she’s the one that did a show at the Alaska State Fair, and she’s actually worked the Rohn checkpoint too, in the past.
[axe thuds]
Casey Groves: I still have a lot of questions about Zach throwing axes. And, that’s a contrived segue to today’s listener question! It’s actually two related questions in Aaron Knight’s language arts classes out in Unalaska
Alyssa; My name’s Alyssa, I’m also from Unalaska, and my groupmates are Michelle, Natalie, and Alyssa-Marie, and our question is have any of the mushers got hurt, and did they have to stop participating in the race?
Aaron: Hi, my name is Aaron, my groups are Matius and Zach, what happens if the dogs got hurt?
CG: Thanks for listening, and thanks for the great questions everybody. So, what happens when there are injuries on the trail? Here’s our trail reporter, Zachariah Hughes, with the answer.
Zachariah Hughes: If the dog’s hurt, his or her musher will leave it at a checkpoint. The veterinarians take care of it and the Iditarod takes over, they’ll take groups of dogs who are hurt, or dropped, or sick, and move them back to Anchorage, or somewhere where a handler or somebody who knows the musher picks up the dog and takes care of it for a while. Mushers, unless they’re really really hurt, will keep going. One time, Aaron Burmeister broke his knee coming down the Dalzell Gorge, and he finished the Iditarod hundreds of miles later, limping over the finish line, but he made it. So, other times mushers will fall of their sleds and crack ribs and maybe withdraw or maybe keep going, they are pretty tough and it’s really up to them, if they’re hurt, if they want to keep trying to finish the race.
CG: Thanks for getting that answer to us Zach, and as always I want to remind the listeners that you can send your questions to [email protected]. The best way to do that and maybe get on the podcast is to open up your smartphone, find that voice memo app, record your question in your own voice, and send that to [email protected] and that’s the best way to get your answer. Well, everybody that’s all the time we have for today, our theme music is by the band Sassafrassh, I’m your host Casey Groves, and until next time - happy tails.
Linwood Fiedler: You just gotta be ready to be game on and not be sleepy [laughs] so.
ZH: How are you gonna do that?
LF: How am I gonna do that? I’m gonna try and take an hour nap here. [laughs]
ZH: Out here, like in the sled bag?
LF: You know, I may lay down with them, or I guess there’s a little cabin we can get in if we want.
ZH: But you don’t have like an exoskeleton for the gorge?
LF: [laughs] No. My head hits a tree, is what’s gonna happen.
ZH: Well I hope you make it out in one piece, thanks a lot man, take care

Bm: I’ve been waiting to tell someone about this!
K.v.K: I’ll start, Victor Ludwig von Koopa….I had gotten the nickname kooky because of my laugh when I was younger (and now)…but my real name was the product of me being called a child prodigy by my…..parents and teachers.
Bully: feh………..Benjamin Royce “bully” Koopa, I thinks the name Benjamin is way to nerdy, and I would go by Roy or Royce but I want to sound tough so when big mouth called me a bully I liked it and I made sure it stuck.

A welcoming speech by Olena Semenyaka at Pact of Steel III conference
I welcome everyone at the 3rd edition of the annual Pact of Steel conference on behalf of the paneuropean Reconquista movement, Militant Zone and Plomin Club. This conference cycle is timed to Winter Solstice and *a special kind of* Black Metal Asgardsrei festival, already 7th.
It is no surprise that we gather here today before the musical part, because it has never been a purely musical event, just like the very genre of BM, in its original form, is above "only music."
Initially, this Pact of Steel between Eastern and Western Europe was "signed" in Russia. However, the increasing oppression of Russian nationalism by Putin's regime soon closed this opportunity. The rebirth of Asgardsrei festival happened in the post-revolutionary Ukraine, for the first time in 2015. Since then, it outgrew its initial format: this year, it will be a 2-day festival, in fact 3-day, and we needed a much bigger venue than last year.
Yet, united against the common enemy, quasi-Soviet Putin's Russia, Ukrainian, Russian and Belorussian nationalists gave birth to something bigger: the program of the Great European Reconquista. In 2016, it transformed into the geopolitical program of Intermarium, the union of Central and Eastern European countries, as a platform for the alternative European integration the endgoal of which is the Paneuropean confederation of sovereign nations, or simply Paneuropa. The first Paneuropa conference took place in Kyiv in 2017.
This event would never be possible without the feat of Ukrainian nationalists, their comrades from Russia, Belarus and other Eastern and Western European countries who laid down their lives not only for the independence of Ukraine, but, above all, for the rebirth of the West. This is our duty now to make sure that their sacrifice was not in vain.
Last year, Pact of Steel conference bore the title "After the Darkest European Hour." For we believe that after the darkest and longest European night, Kali-Yuga, Iron Age, there will inevitably be a new dawn. And the natural cycles, the day of Winter Solstice in particular, to which the current conference cycle is timed, promise us this eternal reccurrence.
But not only this. The Heathen worldview itself shows the way to our spiritual homeland out of the emptiness of European nihilism brought by secularized desert religions. European genetic code and Heathenism is represented in its purest archetypal form precisely in the Nordic countries, and today we are lucky to welcome here Frodi Midjord from The Faroe Islands, the founder of Scandza Forum, which lays a special emphasis on the nordic identity, and the host of "Guide to Kulchur" podcast. He will talk about the metaphysical foundations of European Heathenism, referring to Martin Heidegger's fundamental ontology in particular.
Afterwards, we will listen to Hendrik Möbus who'll have a rehearsal right after his speech along with legendary Absurd band that will headline Asgardsrei VII festival. We are extremely proud that Asgardrei festival was one of the reasons that inspired him to "return" to the public space and appear today here with the lecture about the White God of War, Roman von Ungern-Sternberg. The sun of Europe rises in the East, and this symbolical for the Reconquista Movement figure may be considered as the Wild Hunt incarnate.

'Shout to the Top' by the The Style Council was composed by lead singer Paul Weller, and was released in 1984 on the 'Vision Quest' soundtrack. In a quest for new sounds, the group travelled to realms previously unchartered for a pop group incorporating musical influences as wide ranging as Blue Note jazz and Chicago soul, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, Chicago House and Jacques Brel.Īt the same time, as battle lines were drawn in a decade under Margaret Thatcher culminating in the miner’s strike of 1984-85, Weller’s lyrics spoke with the language of the activist and his state of the nation addresses were both fierce and eloquent. As their leader he had become a deity-like figure and for his fans, The Jam’s split was unimaginable.īut creatively restless and of inquisitive mind, Weller jettisoned them at their height to form a collective with an eventual core line-up of Weller with Mick Talbot, Dee C Lee and Steve White.

M270 MLRS or M142 HIMARS? Which of the two will Ukraine receive?
And how will this change the war? A missile artillery thread
M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS 🇷🇺 BM-27 Uragan and BM-30 Smerch and looked at what missiles are available for the M270 and M142. I suggest you read it before continuing with this thread. · May 29 Angry thread about M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS 🧵 and a bit about BM-27 Uragan and BM-30 Smerch too. Angry, because every M270 and M142 thread I have seen on twitter so far is FULL OF MIND BOGGLING ERRORS... because all of them (!) use as source of their "knowledge" the 1/n https://pic.twitter.com/V2iayikMJYhttps://pic.twitter.com/V2iayikMJY · May 30 The US has two multiple launch rocket systems: M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS Both have a crew of three, both fire the same missiles, both do not need a Fire Direction Center to compute their missions.
3/n The M142 HIMARS exists in only one version. No updates so far - this version is called M142A0. The M270 MLRS exists in three versions: • M270A0 • M270A1 • M270A2 You can distinguish the A1/A2 from the earlier A0 by the GPS antenna on the launcher (red arrow).
4/n The M270A0 can only fire the M26 series, M28 series training rockets, and M39 rocket (photo: a M28 launch). As of 2022 no country fields the M270A0. The M270A1 can fire all current missiles, but its processing power is too slow to fire the future PrSM missile.
5/n
Therefore Lockheed Martin is currently overhauling and upgrading 160 stored M270A0 with new engines, transmissions, launcher-loader modules, and the new Common Fire Control System (CFCS) - this version will be known as M270A2. These 160 new M270A2 will equip the currently active ten US Army and US Army National Guard artillery battalions, which all use the M270A1.
When these 160 M270A2 have been delivered Lockheed will begin to overhaul and upgrade the existing fleet of 225 M270A1 launchers to the new M270A2 standard.

Once the overhauled M270A1 leave the Lockheed facilities as M270A2 the Army will raise new artillery battalions and increase the number of launchers per battalion.
All this means that Ukraine can only get either M142 or M270A1 launchers, because the M270A0 can't fire the 8/n
30GPS guided GMLRS missiles in the US inventory, while the M270A2 is the pinnacle of US military tech and its CFCS is top secret.
This leaves the M270A1 as only possible M270 variant, and luckily Lockheed is right now delivering the first M270A2 to US Army artillery units, which are concurrently retiring their M270A1.
As for the M142: more than 540 have been produced so far and the US Army and Marine inventory is around 450 systems, with approximately 335 in active units. In short: the US could donate a lot of either system to Ukraine, limits a artillery commander's options... unless he has two M142 loaded with different missiles. The M270A1 carries two pods and so can fire unitary warheads (M31/M31A1) and alternative warhead (M30A1) rockets in the same fire mission.

Both systems can fire a LOT more missions per hour than Russian systems.
As mentioned in my earlier tweet it takes 20+ minutes to reload the Uragan (photo) and 40+ minutes to reload the Smerch.
M142 and M270A1 reload time: 5 minutes.
13/n
Then the Russians have to measure and set up their firing positions, plot a fire mission with their outdated maps, sight their launchers optically (photo) - this and their slow reloading time mean that the Russians can fire one volley per hour at best...
14/n
The M142 and M270A1 need 1 minute to stop, set up and fire their missiles: drone spots a russian target - sends GPS coordinates to the M142 - gunner enters GPS coordinates into the UFCS - launches missiles - moves on.
A M142 or M270A1 can fire 5-6 volleys per hour (!).
Just how much further their real range is I cannot disclose, but the Russians are about to make painful discoveries soon.
We now know which launchers and missiles Ukraine will receive... now let's look at how these missiles will deliver a lot of hurt to the Russians.
17/n
Let's look first at the Kherson front. I used @Nrg8000's brilliant maps for these: •
in the 1st image I added two blue circles with the range of M777 howitzers with M795 projectiles •
in the 2nd image I added a yellow circle with the "official" range of a M31A1 rocket
18/n
May 30
Just one M142 or M270A1 can not only fire at almost every Russian position in Kherson Oblast, it can also hit the choke points of Russia's two supply lines:
• the Antonovskiy Bridge near Kherson and
• the Kakhovka Dam near Nova Kakhovka
May 30
Send up a drone:
• find Russian supply point - hit it with a M30A1
• find a Russian command post - hit it with a M31A1
• find a Russian battery - give it a taste of both
• find Russian infantry - one M30A1 will hit them with 160,000 scorching hot, 3 Mach fast shrapnels
May 30
Now let's look at Kharkiv.
In blue the range of a M777 with M795 projectile,
and
in green the range of a self-propelled CAESAR howitzer.
In yellow the "official" range of where a M270A1 or M142 can make the the Russian's life hell.
21/n
The entire russian supply line using the railway from Vovchansk to Kupiansk is in range.
The Russian supply point at Kupiansk, which supplies the Russian salient at Izyum is in range.
And there is no need to worry about counter battery fire: M142 and M270A1 fire their missiles so quickly that whatever Russia fires in return will hit long after both vehicles are gone.
The M142 crew doesn't even have to get out of their vehicle to reload.
The only risk to them are drones.
So both vehicles need air defense close by.
23/n
And now we look at the Donbas front.
Two M777 in blue
and one CAESAR in green...
and compare this to what one M270A1 or M142 can cover.
A handful of M142 moving constantly around in the Donbas area, stopping only to fire or reload can hit attacking troops anywhere. 24/n
May 30 If a Russian battery or air defense system is spotted deep behind russian lines - drive closer to the frontline, fire the missiles, move back out of Russian artillery range. Then reload and repeat.
25/n May 30 M270A1 and/or M142 are definitely going to change the dynamics of this war. Every Russian attack will get smited, every Russian supply point will get destroyed. And we already know that Russia can't move further than 80-90 km supply points.
26/n
May 30 But Ukraine needs a lot of M270A1 or M142. 48x launchers is the minimum. Plus lots and lots of missiles, and drones to spot every Russian position.
Send this to Ukraine NOW and we can wrap this war up before Ukraine's independence day.
27/n
Jun 1 As an amateur I presume that your M777 circles are based on their being located out of Russian howitzer range. or Inside that range, I see two train lines.2
Sounds like the German Gepard AA batteries (when they finally arrive mid July) could be perfect to do the drone defense for these.
