Medium of the Master (Medium Archetype)
(art by ChekydotStudio on DeviantArt; featured in the Legend of 5 Rings TCG)
In a way, the lessons of our teachers means that a small part of them will always survive long after they are gone, passing from master to student who becomes a master, and teaches their own students in kind, creating a form of generational immortality.
However, for some, this is not enough. They need to have a literal piece of their teachers inside their soul, guiding them as need be.
Such is the case with the so-called “mediums of the master”, who utilize their ability to channel spirits to call upon one or more spirits of some of the greatest martial artists of all time, drawing upon their skill to become true masters of unarmed combat… at least while the spirit is bound within.
Now, while Pathfinder is a little vague sometimes on whether the spirits channeled by mediums are their actual souls or merely psychic imprints of a person left behind (general consensus seems to be “it depends”), I figure there are two major ways that one could play up this archetype and their relationship with the spirit.
The first are those that seek to call upon a departed sensei or legendary martial artists throughout history in order to learn from them, literally building their muscle memory by having the spirit go through the motions themselves as well as act as a tutor rather than just letting the spirit do all the work. Theirs in the path of honoring the dead and seeking to preserve the lessons of old.
The other way is more ignoble, with the mediums using the spirit bond as a shortcut to power and mastery. Such relationships feel more like the medium has bound the sifu’s spirit into a cage to tap into when need arises, and they seek to milk as much out of their skill and power as possible without letting the spirit gain control in all but the most desperate situations, knowing full well that the spirit probably dislikes them greatly and may work against their goals.
Either way, we’ll soon see exactly how this power manifests in this take on a “medium but also monk” archetype!
Naturally, as would-be martial artists, these mystics know how to throw a punch. More importantly, their strikes become just as deadly as a monk’s when they channel their spirit.
However, the spirit or spirits they bond with are always of the champion legend, providing various gifts related to martial actions. However, in addition to the traditional locations that these mediums can channel said spirits from, they can also do so from areas that are suitable for meditation or quiet contemplation.
This dedication to only combative spirits does mean that their spiritual surges of guidance are more potent and more numerous before requiring taboos or risking ceding influence.
However, despite their singular focus on a certain type of spirit, sometimes such a location is simply not available. Thankfully, these mediums have a solution for that. Using the strong bond they have with their spirits, they can briefly call them into their body, gaining the benefits of the séance for a few minutes, at the cost of opening their minds to their influence throughout the day, including if they channel them properly later.
Just as they learn to strike like a monk, they also learn to defend like one as well while bonded.
As they grow in mastery, their spirit can grant them various different maneuvers to use as part of their attacks upon bonding, drawn from the list of style strikes available to unchained monks, and they can unleash them especially well when accelerating their attacks with the help of their spirit.
By giving the spirit more influence, they can draw upon their vast stores of ki and one of the applications of it the spirit knew in life, adding one of a variety of special abilities to their arsenal. They can even do so repeatedly to gain even more ki powers, though of course they cede more influence in doing so.
Close to the zenith of their ability, these occult monks can tap into their spirit’s mastery of a single style, gaining not just the basics but every technique associated with it.
This is a pretty fun take on a pseudo-hybrid archetype like this, especially since it even incorporates elements of the unchained version of the monk class, granting a variety of style strikes, ki powers, and even a full on suite of style combat feats at high level. Additionally, the fact that this archetype is focused on one spirit only does mean it’s a rare case where one can build specifically for that spirit and nothing else, allowing for a much more specialized monk than normally is possible. The fact that you can still briefly access those powers if no available séance location is available is a nice touch, if a costly one.
I know I say this for most every entry related to mediums and shamans, but getting an idea for who or what the entity these mediums call upon can be very important. For mediums of the master, just who this master or masters were can be a useful roleplaying tool. Were they someone the character knew in life, or only by reputation. What sort of disposition and styles did they know that would make them an attractive option for such a medium? There’s a big difference between the aged kindly old master and the cruel practitioner of a forbidden technique, for example, and that may come up if the medium dares to go over the limit and be taken over by the spirit.
Twenty years ago, Master Injani left the monastery, never to return. In that time, his last student discovered how to call upon the fallen master with her latent psychic ability, lending her some of his skill and strength. Now, she embarks on a journey to strengthen herself and find allies so that she can fulfill her master’s final mission and avenge his death against the mythical rakshasa who slew him.
Due to political and esoteric maneuvering in the land of Siang, air is no longer considered a proper element, and with that declaration, it has become unfashionable to teach any mystic techniques associated with it. But the element remains, and so a lightning soul sylph named Shea Qin seeks out the name of an old master of djinn style, hoping to channel them and learn this part of her culture and heritage.
Though he is long dead, the wicked monk Tai Yung still continues his plans to rule the nation by proxy if nothing else. After his death, his loyal followers began seeding rumors of those who learned the art of spirit channeling being able to call upon his great power, offering many shortcuts to power that the ghostly martial artist offers, goading fools into taking more and more until he can take over their bodies, enacting as much of his plans as possible in those brief hours where he can walk the earth once more.

2K followers on tumblr and 30K subscribers on YouTube! In celebration, here’s my story. Not a rewrite. This is all a work in progress and subject to change.
Being a HEMA fencer, I’ve wanted a story semi-based on actual swordsmanship and actual fencing techniques.. but fantasy.
It’s a story like… Spiderverse meets Steven Universe meets Owl House meets She-Ra.
It’s called
The Knight’s Handbook
——————
It’s modern Earth but there are supernatural people who protect it like guardian angels called Knights: Humans who’ve died via sacrificing themselves for someone else, and have been revived (not by choice). They protect humans from things as small as tripping over to protecting them from demons, dragons and other dangerous entities.
A Knight can pull their weapon from a magical, glowing scar called their Mortal Wound, the injury they acquired and a sign of the end of their mortality, like how SU Gems can pull their weapons from their gems. A Knight’s weapon can be anything including guns and crossbows, but these shoot magic/energy bullets or arrows.
Knights have their own realm to go to just for each other, (Gallantia) but can live on Earth hiding as normal humans if they wish (so long as they hide the magic scar!)
They function a bit like bees in that there is a Queen, chosen instantly when someone dies by sacrifice according to ‘qualifications of their soul’ (So not completely random like other Knights). Of course, this only happens when the former Queen is killed. Never have there been two Queen Knights at once, so written history goes. Like bees, that would create a huge issue!
Here is the main character and the main antagonist. For the first time apparently ever, there are Two Queen Knights. A mistake of nature, perhaps?
Sidra Saiffudeen
Our main enby is Sidra, she/they. A normal teen turned Queen Knight chosen right after her death, impaled through the chest (where you can see her Mortal Wound symbol) by saving her father. Her design is based on a bee! Not all Knights’ designs are, but I thought I’d lean into Queen Bee stuff.
She’s the ‘Acknowledged’ Queen. Most Knights, ones in support of the past Queen who just died (it’s a mournful period), back Sidra, but think she’s a bit immature. Sidra adores her new people though and vows to be a good Queen. Knight Queens don’t just sit back like Earth Royalty, they’re the most powerful and therefore in battle a lot. The past Queens tended to be adults (The Captain of the Royal Guard was in love with the past Queen (sapphics >:) ) and so having Sidra around is painful but they do their best to teach her.
Then there’s Juliana Fontana, always called Jules. She… is also a Queen Knight. You can tell this because a Queen’s mortal wound symbol is always the same as the Knight Symbol, a sword. Some Knights went traitor to back Jules rather than Sidra. Jules is a very very tired and sneaky girl, but more academically intelligent than Sidra. She’d be a very different Queen, and that’s why the Knights that took her side did so! She hasn’t figured out how to access her weapon or knight form.
The twist? They haven’t seen each other for a long long time… but Sidra and Jules know each other.
Info on Weapons, Mortal Wounds and Knight Forms.
Lastly, The Title’s “The Knight’s Handbook”… what are Knight Handbooks?
Well, for Knights, along with a weapon you can pull from your Mortal Wound, you also have your Handbook! Every Knight has a Handbook with their symbol on it. Like I said, Queen Knights don’t get their own unique personalised symbol, rather they get the default symbol representing all Knights as a species (unfortunate!).
Every Handbook is personalised except for the first couple pages and chapters. The first few pages *always* contain The Rules of Knighthood. One of which is that there Cannot Be Two Queens. But… have these Handbooks with their strict rules on who your friends and enemies are and what you can or cannot do always been a part of the Knights? Or did someone *write* these books for their own purposes? Control?
Handbooks also contain info on how to fight/fence, how to defeat certain entities, anatomy, etc (I’ll figure out more). But, Handbooks also serve as phones! You write something in your handbook for someone else and your writings will appear in *their* handbook! Not sure, but I imagine handbooks can also be used as little sketch hologram projectors (you sketch a map for example or a plan and project it into the air using your book.)
Sidra and Jules may have this giant plot going on around them because they happen to be Queens, but that doesn’t mean they’re not teenagers who want to have fun. A lot of Knights are kids and teenagers and still have their senses of fun, much to the dismay of the serious adult Knights. But they’re all immortal so they’ve got plenty of time to grow up before they hit an age to stop. Being a Knight is tough and scary cause you *could* die at any time in a fight, so adult Knights tend to protect the teens from going out before they’ve trained properly. Queens are not afforded such a luxury and besides, a lot of teen Knights are totally reckless regardless of what the adults say!
So yeah!
That’s an intro to The Knight’s Handbook. I’d love for people to join in like they did with GunnTech and make their own Knights for this, if you feel inspired. It’s kinda like a DTIYS but instead of Draw This In Your Style, it’s… Draw Your Sona for this concept? Working title… /j If you wanna do something, I suppose tag it with “The Knight’s Handbook” with the apostrophe and whatnot, but I do not expect anything, you guys already do so so much 🧡.
Any art or ocs of The Knight’s Handbook will definitely be featured on my next YT vid and I’ll be reblogging (Plus I would love to draw you guys’ ocs, and basically consider them canon since there’s an infinite number of Knights in TKH!)
Thank you for all your support, guys!

Further Excerpts From The Fire Nation Royal Palace Servants' (Unofficial) Handbook
Or: More Revisions To Normal Protocol After The Ascension Of Agni's Exalted Flame, The Dragon Of The Sun, et cetera, Fire Lord Zuko
Part 1:
7. If His Majesty offers you advice regarding martial arts, camouflage, theatre, or any other subject which he is commonly known to be well-versed in, accept it gratefully. If His Majesty offers you advice on emotional matters, listen politely and then disregard it.
7.1. If His Majesty uses the phrase "silver sandwich", you are entitled to a longer lunch break. So you can take a longer bite out of your silver sandwich.
7.1.1. Please do not vandalize the handbook, even if you think it's funny.
7.1.2. Especially if you think it's funny, Chikao.
7.2. If you share something tragic with His Majesty, and he replies "that's rough, buddy", it means he empathizes with your situation.
7.2.1 Alright, maybe he did need to learn that it's not a great way to respond to tragedy. But "rough like the boulders that crushed my father?" was a bit much.
8. Prince Iroh has advised the servants not to reveal to His Majesty what the meat in turtleduck dumplings is. Apparently, he thinks the name comes from their shape. The dumplings are not shaped like turtleducks.
8.1. Now that His Majesty knows, be ready to recite the names of all the turtleducks in the palace at a moment's notice, and also to reassure His Majesty that they are all safe, accounted for, and uneaten.
9. His Majesty should be kept apprised of any "sightings" of the Blue Spirit. The Blue Spirit is an entirely fictional creature. However, his belief in it is entirely benign (and as far as eccentricities go, we've all seen worse) and likely something he will outgrow with age.
9.1. Do not lie about any "sightings". If His Majesty is told that the Blue Spirit was sighted near his window, he will be extremely distraught for the entire day. The Fire Lord has too many real assassins to worry about already. There is no need to add imaginary ones to the mix.
9.1.1. And whenever he is distraught, his footsteps are even quieter than they normally are. It is hard enough to keep track of his movements as it is.
10. While His Majesty has approved the "Kick Ozai Retreat" for servants who were mistreated by Ozai of the Fire Nation (titles rmvd, dishon.), it will never be organized. Please suggest other activities for the Servant Wellness Day.
10.1. Yes, that is because Avatar Aang found out.
10.1.1. Specifically because of the very heartfelt and very long speech he gave on the matter. And the fear that he might give one again.
10.1.2. And no, we can not "simply tell the Avatar to shut up." He is the Avatar. And he is also a 13-year-old boy. His dragonling eyes are very effective.
11. Princess Azula is at the stage of her treatment where she will take regular trips to the palace, dividing her time between her island and here. We're all terrified, but there's nothing we can do.
11.1. Lady Beifong has offered to act as protection, should the need arise. On an unrelated note, the kitchens will now be serving a number of delicacies from the State of Gaoling.
11.2. At the specific and undeniable request of Master Toph, The Blind Bandit, her titles and styles have been updated and they will be enforced effective immediately.
12. If Avatar Aang is seen on a rooftop with no apparent purpose, that means that Fire Lord Zuko is also on that rooftop. Get him down.
12.1. If Master Katara appears to be discreetly looking for someone, that usually means that one or all of His Majesty, Avatar Aang, Master Toph, the Honorable Tribesman Sokka, or the lemur Momo are in some kind of trouble. Assist her. Before one of those idiots gets themselves killed.
12.2. Do not vandalize the handbook, even if it's true. Also, please do not call our Fire Lord, the Avatar, Master Toph, or the Avatar's beloved pet an idiot.
13. Any senior officials who wish to challenge Fire Lord Zuko to an Agni Kai should be directed to the Fourth Scribe's office. They should also be told that there is a waitlist.
13.1. If the Honorable Tribesman Sokka wishes to challenge the Fire Lord to an Agni Kai again, he should be denied. No matter what he tells you, he has not developed Firebending abilities by means of "Spirit World shenanigans" or by Avatar Aang "just giving them to him, Energybending style, like best buddies do, you know."
13.1.1. The Matron has made it known that if the Honorable Tribesman Sokka offers to demonstrate his so-called "Firebending abilities" again, servants are allowed one free kick. The last time he did it, the stench from his blubber bombs lingered for three weeks.

PHBR1: The Complete Fighter’s Handbook (1989) is, love it or hate it, probably the defining book of second edition AD&D in a philosophical sense. The idea here is to spice up the fighter, the least mechanically interesting character class in the roster. This is partly accomplished through new combat rules — there are fighting styles, special maneuvers, a whole new martial arts system. I don’t find these particularly interesting, but they are sturdy enough if you want some extra crunch.
More than the extra rules, PHBR1 introduces character kits. These are sort of a collection of aesthetics, roleplaying cues and perhaps a single special mechanic tweak in exchange for some sort of hindrance. In sum, at this point, they’re the illusion of variety with very little mechanical impact. Thus, the generic fighter can become a swashbuckler, a pirate, a gladiator, a cavalier and so on, without knocking the game out of balance with a billion different rules and powers. For now.
Illusion or not, kits become pretty central to the 2E experience almost immediately, which is pretty neat, because, as I said, they’re primarily packages of vibes instead of weighty mechanical options. Much of their ambiance is derived from the non-weapon proficiencies — in the main rules these were optional, but their use in defining character kits really solidified their place in the core play experience, even if, as a skill system, proficiencies are inadequate.
All of this is pretty formative, I think, to 3E, as well, where the tinkering with character builds mutate kits into prestige classes with significant mechanical impact (ironically while removing any real reason to play a fighter past prestige level). This book also lays the ground work for the tactical focus and feats of the later Players Option book that in turn is a clear prediction of 3E combat.

Via Villas || 36 || Loft #606 || Ana De Armas || Closed
Personality:
Calculating and observant, Via adapts to whatever demeanor fits her situation best to her outcome. For now it's the timid amnesia patient, returned home after harrowing months out in the city.
Biography:
Via knew from childhood her life wasn't normal. Her father headed Spain's leading underworld crime group, particularly the branch in New York City. He wanted a normal life for his daughter, or close to normal: private school, her chosen life of ballet and private tutors. Unlike other students at her elite school, her parents were present in her life. She was lucky. International trips, fancy dinners and (all related to her father's job) made being a single child less than lonely. She loved seeing operas and ballet best, not knowing the cover they served for organized crime. The truth surfaced when her parents were murdered by a rival organization in their home, but Vida was spared. The leaders of Portolés Theater, a secret assassins academy for a subgroup of the organization her father previously led, took her in.
Driven by revenge, Via trained in martial arts, marksmanship, melee combat, tactical and defensive driving, stealth, infiltration, and escapology. She continued dance to keep her sanity, but also a cover identity. Under the guise of an international ballerina she could easily slip from place to place, hunting down her family's killers.
The neutral territories and safe zones for hired killers or criminals couldn't always be trusted. Sometimes infiltrated, other times a trap, she preferred longer stays in a place of her choosing. She wanted to be central, but not flashy, and the run down Wexley was as good a fit as any. Vida bopped around different abodes in the city over the years, but this place fulfilled its purposes. Lowkey, passed over, but with accommodations newer buildings no longer had (without buttoned security and quick to squeal). Well sized apartments, a bar and diner, pool, and pleasing architecture? Modern tenant spaces were minimalist were cheaply structured, barren in design, and had far too many cameras for her lifestyle. If her safe house was one online search away how could it be safe? The Wexley was on the map just enough to be central, but off the track from curious tourists. If she's buckling down from time to time outside of the neutral territories in the city, why not have it be someplace bearable?
Renting full time for five years, but stopping in only every few months, Via didn't make cozy connections. She needed to be faceless and forgettable in case the wrong sort of people came around. Opting out of staying at one of the organization's nests upon returning home from a Russian operation, Via was only home for a week before the virus broke out. Although this scenario wasn't in the handbook, she knew when she needed to team up. With her to go bag and a plethora of weapons, Via was out the window and in good company at Portoles within an hour.
With the stocked bunker, locked down building and well trained associates, they held their own through February. Her companions' downfall was business, which didn't slow regardless of a zombie-like disease and closure of the city. There were still crime units spread out to connect with and people to kill, if they hadn't died or evacuated already. Slowly, her team was picked off one by one by infected, rebels, rivals or simply missing the landing while jumping rooftops. The usual casualty rate fast forwarded and soon it was only a few others and her leaders left alive at the theater. Agreeing to lay low and keep them informed, Via returned to The Wexley while a nearby yacht provided distraction for nearby humans, infected or otherwise. It would have been easy to slip into apartment via the fire escape as she had so many times, but her absence had undoubtedly been noted. Instead she banged on a first floor window (the front doors were demolished) to grab someone's attention to let her in. Via fibbed she'd been injured on the day of the breakout and suffered amnesia until recently. She'd been taken care of by a small community down at Yankees stadium, but returned when she remembered The Wexley and her former "life".
Gathering intel on the world's events and the city itself, Via doesn't plan on staying long. If there's an opportunity to escape the city for better conditions, she and her comrades will disappear. She hasn't returned for emotional connections and the shallow dramas of other residents. It shouldn't be long before a cure or exodus frees Via.
Pre Outbreak Occupation: Assassin Previous Zombie Experience: Killed a countless amount. Aware how the virus travels, but unknown status on immunity. Marital Status: Single Children: N/A Residence: Studio #606 Years residing at The Wexley: Pre Outbreak Five Years Connections: TBD

Tyr Deity Guide
Who is Tyr?
Tyr, or Týr, is a Norse god and member of the Aesir associated with justice, the law, and the formalities of war. He is also the guardian of oaths, treaties, and contracts. In interpretatio romana he is equated to the Roman god of war, Mars. His most well-known role is in the story Gylfaginning where he loses his arm. To some, it is this story that has earned Tyr the title of the bravest Norse god.
Parents and Siblings
Hymir (according to the poetic edda)
Hrod
Odin (according to Sturluson)
If he’s the son of Odin then his siblings (half-siblings) include:
Thor
Baldur
Váli
Vidarr
Heimdall
Hermod
Bragi
Hodr
Lovers or Partners
There is reference of a wife in Lokesenna but no name given.
Children
There is reference of a son in Lokesenna but no name given.
Epithets
The one-handed/armed god
Thingsus (*Þingsaz 'thing-god')
Feeder of the wolf/Fosterer of the Wolf
Notes
Tyr’s most popular story, Gylfaginning, tells of the deal he makes with Fenrir. Only Tyr was brave enough to approach Fenrir in order to feed him. This created a kinship between the two.
The gods tricked Fenrir by telling him that the various chains presented were testaments to his strength, and they congratulated him with cheers when he broke through them. Eventually, they presented the impossible chains made by the dwarves. Suspecting trickery, Fenrir demanded that, as a sign of good faith, one of the gods place their hand in his mouth as the chains were placed on him. Tyr stepped up to this task. As soon as Fenrir’s suspicions were verified and he realized he couldn’t break free, he bit off Tyr’s arm.
It was said that the gods laughed at the trapped wolf, except for Tyr.
Tuesday comes from Týsdagr, or “Týr’s Day”.
The name “Tyr” comes from Old Norse Týr which means “a god” or “the god”. Old Norse Týr, Old English Tiw, Old High German *Ziu, Gothic Tyz, Proto-Germanic *Tiwaz, “god” (Orel, Vladimir. 2003. A Handbook of Germanic Etymology. p. 408.)
Tyr is not the only god involved in war, Thor and Odin are also known as gods of war, though they reigned over three different aspects of war. Tyr is the law and justice, Odin is wisdom, and Thor is more brute force.
Tyr’s name is the namesake for the Tiwaz rune, ᛏ, representing “t”.
During Ragnarök, Tyr’s death was supposed to be caused by the wolf Garmr whom he would kill at the same time.
Tyr may be linked to the Proto-Indo-European deity *Dyeus the god of the daytime sky as well as a deity of justice, though nothing links Tyr to the sky in mythology.
Tyr is said to have a grandmother with nine hundred heads.

Your Aegon seems to have quite hidden potential . We have seen how westerosi education system is quite lacking. Could u shed light on how Aegon can actually be unconventionally successful. He has this unconventional masculinity which doesn't fit with the traditional westerosi . He is a pretty boy , focuses more on art , is eldest son but not the heir or head of family and is a trophy husband.
Hello! I will combine this with your other Ask because they’re a bit similar thematically:
“Can u draw up a list describing the talents of the targbros and velargirls. They are quite a talented generation.”
I answered a similar Ask a few weeks ago about the kids’ hobbies. Most of my thoughts are still pretty similar, but I have a few details to add.
Starting from youngest to oldest so I can ramble about Aegon at the end:
Joff: Witchy stuff aside, she is a bit of a mad scientist. She likes experimenting (e.g. poisonous gas in Chapter 3 of the Handbook), and she has an in-world equivalent of a microscope which she loves using to study all sorts of natural matter. If she were allowed, she might enjoy forging some links at the Citadel (specifically bronze for astronomy, copper for history, silver for medicine, and especially Valyrian steel for higher mysteries).
Daeron: Social butterfly. Knows all his courtesies and is happy to use them. During his childhood he’s more of a follower (to his older siblings and Joff), but as he gets older, I can see him developing more individual interests; I haven’t yet figured out what they are exactly, but probably in the vein of jousting, hunting, falconry, poetry, and other courtly/knightly arts.
Luce: Playing lyre and dancing are her more “typical” courtly arts. We know she likes knitting, but she also enjoys other sorts of crafting, which is a nice bonding activity with Helaena. In the next chapter of Compromised, there’s a mention of Luce making a scrap quilt for Arrax to use in his dragon den. Also, she is very good at math and bookkeeping, which I hope to explore more in Compromised.
Aemond: We have his canon skills, i.e. studying and sword fighting. I’ve joked before that he’s the medieval equivalent of someone who goes to work, goes to the gym, goes to sleep, and that’s it. As for actual hobbies… Serious answer, strategy games like chess. Unserious answer, calligraphy 😂.
Jace: Like canon!Jace, she’s known for her diplomacy and tact. This is useful for anything from hosting parties to negotiating peace agreements. She laments in The Golds that she isn’t good at anything, just studying, but this is a soft skill that she underestimates in herself. She can also come up with very creative non-violent punishments, like forcing Daemon to attend girly tea parties for two weeks.
Aegon: We’ve seen him sing, play lute, draw, and go sleuthing in the city. He’s naturally talented at learning a variety of new skills, but he lacks patience to hone that talent—unless he can use Jace as inspiration ☺️. He can put on a convincing act when he needs to, so he would probably be a theater kid in another life. He is also able to come up with very creative punishments, but unlike Jace, he is more willing to use violence (see: Edwyn Pyle in Chapter 6 of The Golds).
Aegon has enough “traditionally masculine” traits that he isn’t ridiculed as being un-masculine. Also, in the medieval era, activities like music and poetry were considered suitable for noblemen, so those aren’t necessarily points against his masculinity. Henry VIII (who lived after the medieval era but close enough) was known to compose music, and he was regarded as manly.
Admittedly this is Westeros, not the real world, and Westeros tends to be a lot bloodier and more martial than real medieval Europe. People like Otto would prefer Aegon to channel his efforts into history, governance, sword-fighting, etc. instead of the arts—in other words, to be more like Aemond. Those would be the ideal qualities in an heir…but Aegon isn’t interested in being heir.
In the real world, queen consorts had lots of influence over court culture, charity work, and political appointments. They created jobs at court, sponsored orphanages and religious establishments, and could even intervene in the monarch’s decisions (e.g. request mercy for someone the king condemned to death).
Given the interests and talents he’s exhibited thus far, King Consort Aegon would encourage a proliferation of artists and musicians at court, and he’s definitely helping Jace host whatever diplomatic summits she needs to run. He runs around with smallfolk a lot, so he probably brings up social welfare issues at court. If Jace is hesitant to act viciously because she wants to cultivate her image of gentleness and mercy, Aegon can act as the iron fist on her behalf. He’s a Targaryen, so people expect fire and blood from him anyway 🤷🏻♀️.
I also joked in this Ask that because Aegon is so worried about Jace enduring childbirth again, he might inadvertently host the world’s first obstetrics conference just to make sure she gets the best care possible. So there’s that too.

Finally, an elegant solution to dual wielding in 5e?
Dual wielding in D&D 5e sucks. Even if you pick up the necessary fighting style your offhand attack always uses a bonus action. I have been theorycrafting potential solutions on and off for months, but may have found my best solution yet.
This post is entirely with respect to the 2014 Player's Handbook rules.
In 5e, two-weapon fighting runs as thus: When you make the attack action with a light melee weapon in your main hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with another light melee weapon in your offhand. You do not apply your ability modifier to the damage of the offhand attack, unless it is negative (p. 195). Fighters (p. 72) and rangers (p. 91) can acquire the Two-Weapon Fighting fighting style at levels 1 and 2 respectively, allowing them to apply their ability modifier to the damage of the offhand attack.
In my experience, it is rare to see anyone pursue a dual wielding style. In theory, dual wielding should have a good niche as a way to do more potential damage than someone using a shield and one-handed weapon, and more likely to do some damage than someone with an all-or-nothing heavy weapon. However, there are two big problems.
The first is obvious - you must use your bonus action. Any dual wielder is thus locked out of doing anything interesting with their bonus action in combat, or risk becoming a sword-and-shield without the shield. The second is scaling. By level 5, most martials gain Extra Attack, but this doesn't affect dual wielding, so instead of making 4 attacks as you'd expect, you're still only making 3, and using your bonus action to do so. A quick house rule is to allow a level 5 character to make 2 offhand attacks with their bonus action, but this still doesn't really solve the action economy problem and doesn't make dual wielders any more attractive at lower levels.
For a while, the fix I placed in my homebrew rule document (though never playtested because none of my players play dual wielders) was to lift the bonus action requirement. This allows dual wielders to attack twice at level 1, and four times at level 5, with a damage output essentially equivalent to a greatsword assuming all attacks hit. With the fighting style applied, you may well outdamage the greatsword, but not by much, and heavy weapon users have other ways to do even more damage.
This worked fine until just the other day, I looked back at my homebrew monk rework, where I was trying to get monks on-par with other martial classes, and give them the opportunity for more diversity in playstyles, like armoured monks, strength-based monks, and dual wielding weapon monks. I then realised a problem.
The original draft of this post ended up on a monstrous multi-paragraph tangent about how my rule change interacts weirdly with monks with makes them kinda broken in combination with my monk buffs. To make this post readable, I'll spare you the details. But trust me when I say that allowing monks to dual wield without bonus actions, giving them a d8 martial arts die at level 5, and combining these with Extra Attack and Flurry of Blows, led to explosive amounts of damage. In the context of level 5, it's maybe not so bad when wizards can cast Fireball, and paladins exist, but monks only need to short rest to get their KP back. And rolling all those attacks massively increases the chance of getting crits.
But more importantly, I realised this was by far the best way to play monk, and there was no reason to play them any other way. Monks don't get fighting styles or any major choices beyond subclass that reward alternative playstyles, and most subclasses don't seem to mind having more attacks at all. Under this regime, dependent on a relatively obscure rule interaction, monk players in my games would be split between those who understand and use dual wielding, and those who don't.
"Wait... that's it!" I thought. "Fighting styles!"
Only two classes were really meant to interact with dual wielding - fighters and rangers! Why not bring back the bonus action restriction, and lift it only for characters on the relevant fighting style? This prevents a dual wielding rework from breaking classes that weren't designed with dual wielding in mind, while freeing up our Drizzt Do'Urdens to hack and slash with impunity!
The only problem with this new rule is that a monk could still take a level dip in fighter to get the fighting style, but this will also delay their Extra Attack and d8 martial arts die by an extra level, and I don't play with powergamers like that anyway.
Thanks for reading. I hope readers might consider doing something like this for their own games. And if there's a rule I've misinterpreted or you want more detail on how lifting the bonus action requirement on offhand attacks interacts with monks, let me know.
#dungeons and dragons#dnd homebrew#I'm seriously glad I cut out the monk tangent#It would have derailed the post entirely#I am still determined to make armoured monks with two swords a balanced reality

i love to think about when the wild force team was just shayla, taylor and alyssa (before max and danny joined) and all the #justgirlythings they got up to like:
alyssa teaching shayla basic martial arts forms for self defense
taylor and alyssa taking trips to the library together so alyssa can do her homework while taylor meticulously typed up her ranger regulation handbook
shayla playing pranks on taylor by sneaking flowers into her workout braid when she wasn't looking
alyssa and taylor sparring while shayla keeps score (but actually just cheering for both of them)
taylor drawing detailed hypothetical battle plans into a notebook while alyssa makes suggestions of various degrees of helpfulness depending on how impish she's feeling
in conclusion, wild force ladies prequel when???

Bard (College of Valor)
Bonus Proficiencies: When you join the college of valor at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with medium armor shields and martial weapons.
Combat Inspiration: Also at 3rd level you learn to inspire others in battle. A creature that has a Bardic Inspiration die from you can roll that die and add the number rolled to a weapon damage roll it just made. Alternatively when an attack roll is made against the creature it can use its reaction to roll the Bardic Inspiration die and add the number rolled to its AC against that attack after seeing the roll but before knowing whether it hits or misses.
Extra Attack: Starting at 6th level you can attack twice instead of once whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Battle Magic: At 14th level you have mastered the art of weaving spellcasting and weapon use into a single harmonious act. When you use your action to cast a bard spell you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.

VAMPIRIC LOVE Pt. 1
TMNT (2016) Raph x Fem Reader
Requested by: @ashleighclark98
You arrived at the State address of your new employer a couple hours earlier than expected. In doing so, gave you a chance to familiarize yourself of the general surroundings since you're going to be miles away from the nearby City. The job you've applied for was for a Personal Assistant / Estate Manager position. Basically you're going to be in charge of anything and everything that has to do with the business of your employer as well as taking care of his home. Your Parts the front door, your heart beating a million miles per minute, scared that if you didn't calm yourself down now you will pass out before you even got started. Taking a few slow deep breaths and feeling your nerves slowly but surely start to relax you reached out a hand to knock on the door.
However before you could the door suddenly opened and there you were met with A well-dressed sophisticated woman well into her early to mid-40s but otherwise still pretty young. She greeted you with a smile and welcome you in to the mansion.
"You must be y / n, it's so wonderful to meet you. You're early than expected but that just shows us we made the right decision in choosing you for this job. My name is Evelyn but you can call me Eve. You'll be taking over my position as Lord Raphael's personal assistant/ estate manager. Lord Raphael is the owner of this estate and you'll be meeting him momentarily. Follow me and I'll show you to your room."
Before you can say anything more, Evelyn started walking away and without wasting a minute longer you quickly followed her so you wouldn't lose her. While following Evelyn you couldn't help but admire the lovely Decor in Japanese art that embrace the estate walls. You really start to wonder what this Raphael guy is like, but by the looks of the art and decor so far you can tell he loves Japanese art. Or basically anything and everything that has to do with Japan.
'Wonder if this guy is from japan? Maybe I can ask him to teach me how to speak japanese. Or better yet, teach me Japanese martial arts that will be amazing.' You thought to yourself until Eve interrupted your train of thought.
"We're here... this will serve as your room as well as your office space." Evelyn said while opening the door.
You walked into the room to see not all but most of your belongings were there. Closets and drawers were filled with most of your clothes and shoes, a personal bathroom plus a desk with a laptop on the right side of the room in front of the window. To which you presumed was your office area.
"So to give you a rundown on your duties. You'll be taking on the role of Lord Raphael's assistant, cook, housekeeper and gardener. You'll be expected to be on call working from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday and every third Saturday. Groceries arrive once a week, you'll be in charge of ordering them as well as putting them away when they arrive. Laundry is set up to be picked up and delivered once a week and there is a maid that comes in twice a week. Your job is to make sure she doesn't Snoop around where she doesn't belong and she does her job thoroughly. Lord Raphael likes to eat his dinner at precisely 8:00 p.m. and throughout you are in charge of handling the bills making sure there are no late payments. Finally Lord Raphael tends to have guests coming in and out of the house make sure you keep track and keep a record of who those guests are. Passwords for everything you need are in that handbook on your desk as well as an overview of Lord Raphael schedule. Do you have any questions?" Evelyn asked after explaining everything to you.
As you listen to Evelyn give you a list of all your duties you were basically in charge of handling you can almost feel your head spinning. You knew being a personal assistant was going to be a tough job. But never realized it will be this tough not to mention how there are a lot of responsibilities for one person to take care of.
"Well I do have one question what does this Raphael person do for business?" You asked while placing your luggage on the bed.
"It's 'Lord' Raphael and... it's best not to know what he does the less you know the better, and plus I don't even know what he does."
"But doesn't that defeat the whole purpose? I mean if I'm going to be working for this guy I have to at least know who I'm working for and what I'm possibly getting myself into." You firmly objected.
Before Evelyn could even reply back a deep growling voice spoke up from behind her startling the both of you, then turn to see a tall 6 feet humanoid turtle standing at the entrance of your bedroom door.
"Like what Evelyn just said it's best to not know my business what I do is none of your concern your only concern is to do your job."
"Oh, Lord Raphael, I apologize for the disturbance. This is y / n and she's going to be your new personal assistant and estate manager."
"I see... have you briefed her on her everyday duties and what is to be expected?" Raphael asked while taking a few more steps into the room.
"Y-yes sir, I've already explained everything she needs to know and will be in charge of doing." Evelyn replied bowing her head at him
"Very good you can go ahead and take your leave Evelyn. Thank you for your service and I wish you good luck on your future endeavors."
You continue to stare at Raph as he conversates with Eve. You did remember hearing rumors about a giant turtle living in a mansion in the mountains, but you had no idea that it was this mansion in particular and more importantly that you will be working for said turtle. While you were still trying to come to terms that you will be working for a 6 ft terrapin, his voice suddenly interrupted you.
"Now Ms. Y/n since Evelyn has gone over your duties, I expect nothing but perfection... anything less I won't tolerate. Now I have a guest coming at 4:30 p.m. you are to greet them and show them to my office. After which you are to prepare us refreshments."
"Wait wait, you want me to agree guests? How do you expect me to do that?" you asked folding your arms.
.........
"What do you mean how? You are to greet them. Bow your head like you saw Evelyn do when I came in the room, keep your eyes glued to the floor as a sign of respect and will not speak unless spoken to. Is that enough other explanation for ya?"
"Yeah yeah whatever... You sure you don't want me to kiss their boots or anything?" You joked with a smirk and chuckling.
Raph just rolled his eyes and sighed heavily at the ridiculous suggestion. "No I don't want you to kiss their boots, just a simple bow will do."
"Oh come on I was just joking, you really need to lighten up and loosen up a little."
"Well unfortunately for you that will not be happening anytime soon so don't hold yer breath."
"We'll see about that, one way or another you and I are going to be friends and you're going to like it."
Raphael just sighed again before walking out of the room but not before reminding you to be ready for his guest arrival. Once the door was closed and you were finally alone you smile before falling back onto the bed.
"Looks like being this guys a state manager won't be my only job." You said to yourself.

Iron-Ring Striker (Magus Archetype)
(art by LukasVasut on DeviantArt)
The magus class, the blending of martial prowess and magic into one smooth, disciplined machine. It only makes sense that there would be many different styles and specializations of that basic concept. We’ve seen mystic archers, shieldbearers, two-weapon fighters, and the like, and now it’s time to look at an unarmed fighter.
Originally, the tradition of the iron-ring strikers hails from Vudra in the Lost Omens setting, gaining its name from the iron rings worn by it’s practitioners. However, like many things, it has spread outward since then.
Dedicated to strengthening not just their body but minds, these warriors are masters of full-contact martial arts combined with magic, two flavors that normally don’t really go together, but their specialized training makes it work.
As a flavor detail, you could claim that these magi use their iron rings as the focus for their magic when they enhance their unarmed prowess… or you could just say that they just infuse the magic directly into themselves if the iron rings themselves aren’t part of the lore in your setting.
In any case, the result is a magus that can punish foes with their strikes and magic even when on the defensive, as we’ll soon see.
With their focus on unarmed combat, these magi put a little less effort into their arcane training, reducing the reserves of arcane power they have for spells.
However, they learn how to add enhancements to the unarmed strikes to compensate, and can learn several defensive, offensive, and tactical enchantments to temporarily bolster their abilities with.
This specialization does mean they can only deliver spellstrikes with their unarmed strikes though at first.
They do, however, train to master the art of dealing harm with their fists and feet, advancing as a monk or brawler would.
Additionally, they train to perfect various combat maneuvers.
In order to bolster said maneuvers, they can sacrifice spells in order to lend mass to their forms, allowing them to grapple with foes many times their size with no issues.
Additionally, they also can learn to conduct their spells as part of these maneuvers, making their grapples, trips, or shoves even more debilitating.
Finally, some of the most powerful can reflexively channel these spells when their foes touch them to try and turn the tables with their on maneuvers, punishing them for trying.
With their focus on combat maneuvers, these mystics almost don’t even need to specialize in unarmed, but the combination of level-progressing damage and the ability to both sacrifice spells to bolster combat maneuvers and conduct them through said maneuvers means that they can not just hit hard but also lay on the debuffs and battlefield control hard on foes. I recommend taking lots of touch spells that lay on debuffs that complement your favorite combat maneuvers well, as well as control spells to keep yourself from being overwhelmed, not to mention buffing yourself as well. And don’t be afraid to diversify your spells. Even if you can’t use a particular spell you prepared, it can be converted into a buff for our maneuvers on the fly!
It's easy to imagine how this specialization blends magic with ascetic practices, even if they do not get a ki pool on their own. Consider how the pursuit of the arcane is similar to the search for enlightenment. Of course, others might just be martial artists with no interest in ascetic ideals, instead choosing to perfect themselves for their own reasons.
The eagle has long been the symbol of the Raptor’s Grasp, an elite military unit of mages and martial artists that blend the two together seamlessly with their signature “Raptor Style”. However, recently there have been allegations that the style is a stolen one, a copy of the Dragonfly Style of Eastern Joukahn.
Last of his noble house, Baron Perrinor wishes desperately to achieve the same heights as his family’s founder, a mighty warrior mage that struck down foes with magic-coated fists, but no matter how hard he tries, he cannot seem to make progress. The obsession has grown so much that he has neglected many aspects of his rule, such as caring for his fiefdom and producing an heir.
The champion of the Vokstead Arena takes the idea of “iron ring striker” to an excessive new height, being covered in piercings. The shackleborn tiefling literally crackles with arcane energy as she tears into foes with spell and fist alike.

Hi!! I saw the whole 'draw your sona in this universe' thing at your post about The Knights Handbook and took that as a personal challenge(/j/lh) but I was wondering if we could potentially use clothing from other cultures (Chinese, Egyptian, Brazilian, etc) or basically just anything other than the more euro-centric references given for our characters knight forms! (Keep in mind I'm not using euro-centric as a negative I just don't know how else to put it lol)
Oh my gosh ABSOLUTELY! As an Arab, I was wondering if I should give Sidra more Arabian inspired gear but I do HEMA (Historical European Martial Art Fencing) and so based her off that as a Main Impression for others! I would love to see Knights of other cultures!!! Long as they keep the same sort of idea (Weapon and Mortal Wound!)

All my D&D player characters*
*that I’ve made and played (or will play soon, in one case). I also played a pre-gen bard for a one-shot once but I don’t remember anything about them.
The characters are presented in chronological order from left to right in the line-up according to when I made them. Characters’ names, pronouns, descriptions under the cut:
Hhaamm, he/him, half-orc barbarian (in 3.5e, all others are 5e), my very first dnd character for a one-shot-turned-two-shot. All four PCs were half siblings with the same human mother. He is easily distracted by good food as well as by small creatures calling for help, even if they are evil little halfling scammers. My first game made me want to DM because I could tell it was fun, fit my interests, and… I figured I could do a better job at it (sorry Theo, if you ever read this, but also thank you for getting me into this game).
Zarrakas Kyvir, he/him, tiefling bard for a dream sequence one-shot my cousin ran. All the characters were in some way different in the dream, but since Zarrakas was brand new, I decided he was a wizard in the waking world. He was very confused to see his spellbook replaced by a pan flute. He got paralyzed when a death knight showed up, and we were level 7 or something, so that was terrifying until it turned out the death knight only had 1 hit point. Whew.
Merlix, he/him, gnome druid for a one-shot where I got to use Intelligence for druid spellcasting and reflavored a land druid (Underdark, I think) as an artificer, using the rock gnome tinkering thingamajig as a spellcasting focus. This was before the artificer class was added to 5e.
Dine, she/her, human paladin, partially randomly generated for a one-shot (yes, I was kind of a forever DM, playing rarely and for a long time only in one-shots). We all rolled for character gender, and we all happened to roll up women. I never went back to he/him pronouns for my PCs nor for myself 🏳️⚧️
Pyra or Random, she/her, tiefling wild magic sorcerer, again partially randomly generated, including her virtue name from Xanathar’s Guide, and some traits from the 2e Planewalker’s Handbook. Her demon mother left her on the doorstep to an abandoned house. The neighbours took her in and raised her as a wild child. She was later kidnapped by a hag and forced to work for her, cleaning, cooking, and receiving guests in her hut while the hag was out during the day. These guests included anything from fiends to innocent villagers doomed to suffer some cruel irony after seeking the hag’s help. She eventually escaped in a lucky fit of wild magic and later joined the merchant ship and adventuring crew The Advantage. Random is my most played PC, and she has changed a lot over the years, though mostly from wild magic surges haha.
Mohilda Duskbraid, she/her, dwarf grave cleric created for Tomb of Annihilation and based on a prompt on whothefuckismydndcharacter.com. We allegedly have one session left of that campaign, and it’s been a lot of fun so far. ToA is very different from out regular playstyle, but still fun. She loves mystery and local spirits, so she was eager to be possessed by I’Jin.
Tomph, she/her, half-orc battle master fighter created for a one-shot set in Exandria we never got very far into. I think we broke into the tomb of Sovereign Uriel Tal’Dorei but I don’t remember why the party was hired to go there in the first place. I still really like her name. tomph. Tomph. ᴛᴏᴍᴘʜ. It’s fun to say.
Nissa, she/her, gnome way of the drunken master monk made for a one-shot inspired by Guards! Guards! which I regrettably still have yet to read. She’s a tambourine-playing martial arts dancer, and I think the tambourine might have been her monk weapon?
Mahogany Leafsworth, she/they, gnome bard for Wild Beyond the Witchlight. Mahogany has lost her sense of time (but not her rhythm) and is frequently late or far too early for her gigs, so her music career isn’t doing super well. I only played her once, so not much more to say other than she hid inside the hollow warforged character’s leg and helped cheat in the cupcake eating contest at the festival.
Niks Rotscute, they/it, kobold warlock and the Wizard Gizzard Lizard of Strixhaven. They have a pseudodragon familiar called Leviathan, and they love all things dragon. Their patron is a voice that speaks to them in draconic, and their aesthetic is oops I fell in the swamp on purpose again. They actually use goblin stats, because I liked those better than the published kobolds, so I guess Niks is a… gobold?
Halcyon, they/them, aasimar divine soul sorcerer created for a two-shot (but I was sick for the finale) set in a heavily cut-down, modified version of BG: Descent Into Avernus. Their adoptive parents had a prophecy that their child should become a powerful evil, so they decided to adopt a baby aasimar instead of conceiving a child of their own. This prophecy was ~100% irrelevant to the game and Halcyon will ~0% show up in any game again. They did use an infernal war machine to gun down a horde of fiends though, which was 100% cool. And yes, that is a robe of stars and a staff of power.
Fenra, she/they, half-orc barbarian/cleric made a brief appearance at the end of a campaign with the same group as the Avernus game. To keep things short: She killed the Xanathar and my partner made some cute drawings of the battle.
Artemisia or Malurt, she/they, air genasi ranger, starting early next year, I will be playing this new character in a modified (and translated) Ghosts of Saltmarsh Spøgelser af Søndermarsk(?) campaign. She has a rival from her backstory, which is a fun little knife—or gun—to hand to your DM. She also has no idea that she’s a genasi and not just a human like her family. I should probably send over my backstory doc to the DM for review…

I: Our new cdrama is about an orphaned doofus who steals the identity of a banished god after accidentally killing him and uses it to get into a prestigious martial arts sect and there are dragons and bird planes and magic paper crane letters and an evil fox demon chained up in a cave that they really should block the entrance to
M: Hey Goddess, I'm Suddenly Enrolled at Martial Arts High after Killing a God and now there are Dragons and Bird Planes and an Evil Fox Demon!! How am I supposed to roll a rock??
M: one of the classic hero journeys
I: Oh no you see there is a rock which is the other banished god who was a rock but then the banished god spent so much time doing meditation by the rock that her rock spirit cultivated into human shape
M: hey babes, want to be a rock… in front of a cave?
I: Well the female lead as a small child went into the cave which again has not been sealed in any way and the imprisoned fox spirit was like hey little girl want this pretty flower PSYCH now you're demon poisoned with the seed of a demon fox and then when she's grown up and she's worried the rock is going to steal the fake god from her because the rock and the god are destined lovers so she goes to the fox spirit and is like hey teach me the forbidden demon arts so I can be more powerful than the rock
M: this is probably covered in the martial arts highschool teacher handbook
I: Everyone thinks he's the banished god because when they were banished the rock gave the god a little pendant made of some of her and the fake god stole that before dumping the god's body so the rock is like you're my dude you have that pendant made from my flesh
M: uj/ this is a lot more highschool than i intended!
I: the actual banished god who was killed got found by guys from the evil martial arts school and they did some magic shit to preserve his soul and transplant it into an unsuspecting student so he is around with patchy and imperfect memories and powers
M: theres usually one in most highschools, not even restricting to martial arts high school
I: So we're nine episodes in
M: wait does that mean to-now is a warmup, or half the runtime
I: Warmup
I: There's like forty episodes
M: well then i anticipate second semester
I: Right now they're on a field trip to defeat or stop the birth of the great dark bamboo serpent from the waters of a city and the girl poisoned with fox spirit wants to fight the rock who's now engaged to the fake god who's like oh god I really regret pretending to be this god and want to do take-backsies but he's already had a conversation with the principal who was like IT WOULD REALLY BE BAD FOR EVERYONE IF IT TURNED OUT YOU WEREN'T THE BANISHED GOD WE WOULD ALL BE EMBARRASSED AND THE REPUTATION OF THE SCHOOL WOULD SUFFER AND ALSO PROBABLY A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO KILL YOU
M: i'd like to step back and ask if the actual cdrama has a martial arts highschool or if you're just translating all this on the fly (both are good)
M: and if you need to step back and ask yourself the same question, that's even better
I: They're cultivation sects but the protagonist is like 16ish when the series starts so it's basically like a high school where you learn how to do punches and flying swords
M: that counts, i'll take it!
I: Three years have passed since he accidentally killed a god by making a light fixture fall on him
M: Thank you for confirming that chinese progresion fantasy is basically muppets
I: And then the protagonist and his adoptive parents who are criminals who run a robbery inn load the god into a wagon and take him into the desert and dump him off a cliff
