Marrubium vulgare, White horehound, White archangel. Widow’s herb, Devil’s eye.
Horehound is a magical, edible herb used to flavor candies and beverages. Its wrinkly leaves are quite fragrant though not exactly pleasant. Small white flowers appear in the spring and last through the summer.
The scientific name comes from the Hebrew word “marrob,” meaning “bitter juice.” Like Tansy, it is commonly considered one of the original bitter herbs used in Passover seders.
It was also commonly found in the medicinal chests of Ancient Egyptian priests and is considered one of the earliest natural remedies for coughs.  It is still used as one of the ingredients in Ricolla cough drops. The Egyptians called the herb “the seed of Horus,” after the name of the Egyptian Pharaoh and sky god Horus, pictured below, frequently pictured with a head of a  falcon.
For some, Horehound serves as the best means of combatting curses and strokes of bad luck. The method is very precise: Place the image of Horus or a falcon on a flat surface, lay horehound leaves around the image in a circle, add your favorite rhondonite stone on top of the image, light a black candle, and then visualize all the evil disappearing in the smoke. Works every time.
Not quite sure why I include it in the herb garden since I have little need to ward off bad karma. It neither tastes nor smells vey good. But I do like the name.

#2097 - Marrubium vulgare - Horehound
Tumblr media
Far from the best photo I've taken. I was paying more attention to the Horehound Bug on the plant. Here's a much better picture from Wikipedia.
Tumblr media
Marrubii was the Latin name for the plant. The common name in English is derived from the Old English hoar (furry, as in "hoarfrost") and hune (a word of unknown origin designating a class of herbs or plants). "White" distinguishes it from Black Horehound, Ballota nigra, a similar-looking herb formerly in the same genus.
A grey-leaved perrenial herb from the mint family, growing up to 45cm tall, and native to Europe, Northern Africa, and southwestern and central Asia. Widely naturalized in many places, including most of North and South America, deliberately introduced to Australia for supposed medical use, and highly invasive in New Zealand where two species of moth are being trialed as biological controls.
Most herbal texts suggest it as a treatment for coughs and lung ailments, athough one Roman writer also promoted it as as a dewormer for livestock.

DAY 3: Marrubium vulgare
Date: 9/11/2019
Time: 11:45 AM
Location: Lower Arroyo Park, heading towards the Arroyo Seco Trail
Route:  Heading towads the Arroyo Seco Trail from the parking lot, take the walkway to the east of the parking lot.  On that walk way, there will be a field with a Western sycamore on the north side, about 50 ft into that field, you’ll find about 3 marrubium vulgare, all within 5 ft of each other.
Tumblr media
Weather: About 80F, warm and sunny.  I found the white horehound under the shade of a sycamore tree, so it was a little bit cooler.
Habitat:  sycamore forest.  There were a lot of sappy/sweet berry trees around, which meant a lot of ants surrounding the area.  The soil was covered by fallen Western sycamore leaves.About 10 ant piles visible within the 8 ft radius of the horehound.
MARRUBIAM VULGARE - WHITE HOREHOUND
Tumblr media
Even though its an invasive, marrubium vulgare is one of the coolest plants I’ve seen.  I really quickly fell in love with its fuzzy textured leaves.  When I first saw them, I tried to sketch their pattern, but my drawing skills were limited.  I saw three white horehounds within 5 ft of each other.  Out of all 3, this one was the tallest, coming in at maybe 10 inches tall.  The leaves on this plant were round, with white hairs, and super textured. They curled inwards, but not tightly.
The stems of this plant were also fuzzy.  I noticed that at the point where the stem branches off to a leaf, there was some flowering - cream/beige tiny flowers grew in that little crevice.  Most of them had either dried up or fallen off.  The leaves on this tree grew in a pattern that was spiraling upwards.
Other than its horehound buddies, this plant looked very alone.  Not only was it the smallest plant in this community, it was pretty far away from any other plants.  I imagine it was getting a lot of nutrients from the sycamore leaves that dropped.  The marrubium was surrounded by 6-7 active ant piles.

4 through 8 February 2019
It’s been a busy week in the garden. We are getting back to normal after the Heralding Spring event. I finally had an opportunity to try our new caterers and their food is delicious.
Medicinal plants will be done every fortnight going forward...so next week there should be a new one.
We have a new intern for three weeks, Harriet. She’s been a great help and a nice boost to the team.
I am still working through all the interpretation in the garden, though an end is nigh, thankfully. I started replacing a few raised beds in the pharmaceuticals area. That should be finished next week. I commenced work on the Galanthus collection in the garden. I drew up some quick planting plans, in the rain, so we know where we think they are now. I will look at dividing, moving and expanding the collection.

Marantaceae Maranta leuconeura var. kerchoveana
Piperaceae Piper ornatum
Primulaceae Cyclamen hederifolium
Rutaceae Citrus x limon ‘Variegata’

I enjoyed a busy social week: Raphael was visiting from Munich, Pasquale was in town from Florence, Denis invited me to see Káťa Kabanová (an opera in three acts, with music by Leoš Janáčekat) the Royal Opera House Wednesday, and Thursday I caught up with my colleague Robert after work.
Thursday there was a one-day-only art exhibition in the garden, done by art students. This was my favourite, three different views through three differently shaped viewfinders. This was my favourite view, at that moment. I would love to see how that would change through the year with the plants.

Let's talk about Horehound!
Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is a member of the mint family that has been used in herbal medicine for centuries! Here are a few of the most well known uses for it:
Relieve symptoms of bronchitis, asthma, coughs, allergies, sore throats and any respiratory inflammation/irritation. It can also be used to help with indigestion and gastrointestinal distress.
Horehound can be used in many different ways! If its being used for a sore throat, strep, or to reduce inflammation in the throat, it can be made into a tea or even better, into homemade cough drops! (Ricola's original cough drop recipe of their 13 herbs contains Horehound as their first ingredient, actually!)
But if it's a respiratory issue you're having, it's best to smoke it. You also use it like an incense and breathe the smoke in. Both will help reduce inflammation in the lungs and sinuses. If you're using Horehound for indigestion or a gastrointestinal problem, it's best to drink it as a tea!
